That sounds like heaven to me.
Podcast Host (Don Hahn or Rosenberg)
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers.
Don Hahn
All right, listen, I only know one American. I only know one American goalie and that's of course Rick D. Pietro. All the other ones, they pale in comparison. That's my problem. That's my story. I'm sticking to it.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
It's a good one.
Don Hahn
But Belfor was obviously not who I was thinking of. It was. And you know why?
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
But he played Barasso in the Stanley Cup.
Don Hahn
It's, it's the fact that it's. Barrasso and Belfor have something in common other than their last name. Start with B.
Caller Felicia
Is.
Don Hahn
They both weren't really. They were both prickly kind of personalities.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Got it.
Don Hahn
You know what I mean? And so I was thinking of, who's the guy? Everybody said he was a bad guy and, and then now. And it's so. Just sent me down into this terrible vortex of just forgetting about who was American and who was Canadian.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
So I understand.
Don Hahn
It happens. Not my best.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
I'm gonna let you get up, but
Don Hahn
I'm gonna thank John Mack and Chris on Twitter who both said Tom Barrasso, question mark and I made it. That's the name. Why did I screw that up? So that was that. Lots of calls. 809. 3776. Hey, speaking of hockey, Felicia in Mississippi joining us. Hey, Felicia.
Caller Felicia
Hey, guys. Like, I haven't talked to you in forever. So of course I just wanted to kind of vent and you'll feel my pain since you're an Islander. Span too. Alan. I'm so disappointed I missed the. I missed the first part of the show. I know Anthony said you guys talked a little bit about it, but I didn't hear it. So I apologize if I'm reiterating what you already said, but I'm just so frustrated. Like, like a little over two weeks ago. We had every opportunity while every team around us was Losing to just rack up, you know, more points in the standings, and we just completely fell apart. I trust Darsh and I think that Deborah is going to be a good hire, but we have got to get the power play figured out. Like, that has been an issue for us for like 10 plus years. It's ridiculous. And my other point, you know, I feel bad. I'm not blaming Sorokin by any means, but, you know, he was by his himself basically, you know, the last couple months because Riddick just couldn't play. And I, you know, Barlomov had all those surgeries in the past two years. I don't think he's ever coming back to the NHL. So we have to figure out a backup.
Don Hahn
They have to find a backup for sure. You're absolutely right, because Barlamov, I mean, they gave him a lot of time to try to recover, but it doesn't sound good. And Sorokin, it looked like almost ran out of gas. Right. He had played so well, and then they relied so much on these last couple of games. A little shake back to back. Yes. And so it's. That's tough. But there's something, and you're right about the power play. They do miss Palmieri big time. They really missed him. But they do have to figure out this off season whether or not Darsh can do a big swing for something. Right. Like, when you get a talent like Schaefer, you've got to feel like, okay, we've got a type of piece that can help win a Stanley Cup. Then you have Soroka. All right, we have a goalie that can help us win a Stanley Cup. Those are two of the hardest pieces to find. Now you got us. The last thing is to bring in that guy that just. Suddenly the culture changes. And I don't know, can Darsh do it? That's a huge question to ask, but I. To me, that's what I'm waiting for. Are you. Are you the guy that can make that big move for a player that sort of changes everything and brings you up to that level now where you can feel like you're one of the elites? A lot of the same guys, Felicia, on this team for a long time now, and the results keep kind of being the same towards the end. So good to hear from you. Keep the faith as always. Of course. So the Yankees tonight, take on the Angels, gave you the lineup earlier. No Grisham in the lineup. No Rice in the lineup. No Rice in the lineup is one that has everybody.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
I hate when there's no Rice in my line.
Don Hahn
Freaking out because he's the one guy that's actually, you know, giving you something offensively. But, you know, it's. It's just his turn to take a day off, I guess. But Aaron Judge said something after the game yesterday that caught some people's attention. The Yankee offensive struggles.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
All right.
Don Hahn
The judges asked the captain, are the guys just trying too much?
Aaron Judge
It's tough, but it's our job. You know, we gotta go out there and take care of business. I think it's just the products of guys just trying to go out there and do their job. You know, it's a tough game and, you know, we're expected to go out there and win. We're expecting to go out there and put our team in the best position. And, you know, when things are kind of going your way, you know, guys try to do a little extra. But now we're going to be in a good spot. It's been up and down year so far, but it's still early. Guys are having great at bats. You see a lot of bright things going on this season, and we're going to, we're going to change it.
Don Hahn
Okay, so he always spins it positive at the end, but there was a moment in the middle there where he did kind of seem to agree. Guys are doing too much, you know, trying to do extra, trying to help any, you know, again, all for good reason. You're trying to win. But it does sound like that. Aaron Boone, before the game tonight, was asked about what Judge said.
Aaron Boone
Yeah, I think that definitely happens offensively early in the season. And that's why, you know, I always talk about wanting guys to get their firsts out of the way and kind of get into the normal flow of the season. But anytime you get out of the gates a little bit slow, you know, it's all you have to go on at that point. You want to get it going. So what, what Aaron says really good is, you know, really keeping it simple there, thinking small, think about the at bat and just taking a tough at bat. And as you do that and with the talent that the group has, that'll start to snowball. But, you know, so it's one little good at bat. Pass the baton, keep it moving and. But we got to get some guys
Don Hahn
to that place or it's the opposing manager seeing Ryan McMahon in the on deck circle and saying, let me walk somebody might as well, because I know this guy is just an easy out.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Yep.
Don Hahn
And that's exactly what happened. And that's got to get into your head if you're a player and you know that's the opposing teams just can't wait to get you up at the plate because they know you're an automatic out. The last three positions in the lineup, automatic outs.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
I mean they're, they're, I think each one bats 100.
Don Hahn
So Hunter's not good, right?
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
No, hundred is 100%.
Don Hahn
Oh, oh, 100% is very good.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
That's what I thought it meant.
Don Hahn
I don't think it's that.

Don Hahn
Here's more of Boone pregame. Are they being too selective at the plate?
Aaron Boone
I don't see that as a, as something yet. Look, every day is different. We face, you say Kikuchi tonight, that approach is a little bit different than against Drew Rasmussen. So we're going to always lean on the side of. I want us to control the zone. That's our identity and one of our biggest strengths. And, and just because you're not getting some results doesn't mean you start hit chasing. And, and that's when you start expanding and get yourself in trouble. So simplifying things. Have a good at bat, thinking small, I think are really good things when you're kind of trying to get that traction and find your way a little bit. But again, like I consider controlling the zone doesn't mean you don't go up there aggressive to the first pitch. Like we're looking for a certain pitch. I want our guys to have a spot specific plan as a group, but also individually each at bat. And if you get your pitch, like, let's get busy with it. So again, especially when you're going through a time where you're not hitting a lot of home runs, you got to make hay. When we have opportunities, we've had, for the most part, enough baserunners out there, we got to cash them in.
Don Hahn
Yeah, the runners and scoring position thing has always been a problem early in the season for both teams. Jay in the Bronx on the Yankees. Jay, you're up next.
Caller Jay
Hey, thanks for taking a call. Just two quick comments. I guess my biggest problem right now as a lifelong Yankee fan is, and you just, you just heard it in the commercial break earlier, you still sell us on the legacy and the championships and the penance and the big horns and the, you know, the cliffs of the old Yankees doing their thing. And then once we buy the tickets, you tell us it's a crapshoot. You know, you have to settle for a pretty good team who might, who should make the playoff every year. But you know, the World Series, that, that's a crapshoot. I, I think it's a little bit of a mixed message. And two, yeah. And I think Don asked the question what I prefer a perennially good team, tier two team or bottom out and hopefully, you know, chase a championship. I prefer the latter because it at least tells me that we're trying our best to win the Whole thing. I don't think the Yank that's, you know, making the playoffs for me, is a Tampa Bay thing. The Yankees are and will always be defined by championships, but better or worse. And that, again, is the way they sell it to us. So if you know where Martin is, second or third or fourth best team in the league, and this goes for the Knicks as well, if we don't make it to the finals, I'd have no problems if you just start from scratch. That's just how I feel. And, you know, especially with the Yankees, because Yankee fans have been kind of, you know, molded into expecting a certain thing. And I think it's a bit disingenuous for the organization to say, well, you know, at least you guys get to the playoffs every year. That's just my personal opinion as a fan.
Don Hahn
Yeah. I think again, when you spend this long and it's the same, like, it just feels. Every year feels the same. It starts from Groundhog Day. It's almost like, how do you get to the next step? I always use the phrase advance the cause. Like, how do you take it to the next level? Because I don't think there should be a complacency with, hey, every year, though, we're in it. Well, but when are you ever in it and feel like you can win the whole thing?
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Even though. Which is crazy because you get to the World Series, you get to a. You played five games in the World Series, you think that means you're close.
Don Hahn
You were there.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
It didn't feel like that.
Don Hahn
Oh, my God, no.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
And by the way. And the second it started to feel like it might feel like something, it. It burned spectacularly. One of the worst moments in history. That doesn't help. You can't forget that part.
Don Hahn
Right.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Like, I wonder if we feel different if they lose in 11 innings in game seven to the Dodgers.
Don Hahn
Well, again, versus the way they. So the way the Blue Jays went out last year, if the Yankees went out like that, are you still. You would feel like, boy, that was just a knockdown dragon. Now you're always going to have the fans that are probably, you know, would. Would be chasing Boone with torches and pitchforks about decisions made in the series, that they would find reasons why it cost you the Series. That's what people do. But overall, you'd have, like, what did we do when that series was over? You saluted the Blue Jays for putting up the fight that they put up.
Aaron Judge
You're right.
Don Hahn
That's all you're looking for. But when you go out the way. They went out in that World Series with bad decisions of bringing in pitchers and obviously, you know, the miscues in the field and then the Dodgers afterwards saying, oh yeah, yeah, we knew what to do with them. We knew they were a mess. They weren't good fundamentally. Like when they told you that was their game plan. Yeah, that's the part that has to really bother you as a fan.

Okay. Don would be like, I've never heard this in my life. What is this? Is this popular?
Don Hahn
Couldn't understand it. I don't know it and I don't care to know.
Podcast Host (Don Hahn or Rosenberg)
Wow.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Don't need to know. It was. You know, I thought. I thought last week the Don Metal list was an interesting day. It was an interesting day.
Don Hahn
It was a choice.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
It was a choice. Like it could have been a day. Just for the record, I just want you to imagine reverse.
Don Hahn
Okay.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
I. Because. Because Don is in charge of the list segment.
Rich Eisen
Would we agree?
Don Hahn
It's his list.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
It's his thing. Yeah. Now I'm happy to be helpful and so are you. Right. We could bring a list.
Don Hahn
Always like to jump in and do what we can.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
So if. If Dom were to text me at 11am noon and go, can you come up with a list today? Sure.
Aaron Judge
I got you.
Don Hahn
I'm a little busy.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
I got a few hours, but give me a few hours. I got it. Instead, Don pulled the one out of his back pocket that, you know, he just has sitting there.
Don Hahn
That's a July list. We said that. Right? That's a July sports talk radio.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Well, it's. I know it. It's July 1987 list. It's. Here's the thing.
Bucked Up Announcer
One of his most accepted and well,
Don Hahn
well, I don't know complimented lists he's
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
ever done though, because the people who actually knew about it.
Don Hahn
Right.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Because Don knows what he's talking about.
Don Hahn
Probably shared by those who love metal.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Because if you love. But here's the thing. The one part is the reason I'm bringing this up now and Don's not here because I don't want to get into a big fight with him. Now, first of all, by the way, of course I'm fine with it. But you know me, I'm good with any of us doing it. I'm good with any of us doing the things that we're passionate about.
Don Hahn
Yep.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
And that's no problem. And if nothing else, even if I didn't enjoy it in terms of knowing what was going on, it furthers to establish who Don is. And I'm always about character development on a show that was Don. It's all good.
Don Hahn
But we know it's his passion. So you support it. But it's just it was random though, at the time.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
If you were to make a comping, the contents are very like. Dom would go, well, it's like you making a hip hop list. But it's not. You can't make a comp between metal and other pop music. It's not pop music. It is niche music of like 35, 40 years ago.
Don Hahn
Well, the. I guess that's the thing is that it's an error. It's a bygone era. It's like if I made a. A vocal jazz list.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
That's right.
Don Hahn
Even though vocal jazz is still a thing today.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
But it's even more niche in its heyday.
Don Hahn
There was a time it had a heyday where you just, you know.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
But like metal now, Bobby Darren isn't a truly active genre. That's like influential in a real way. It's just not.
Don Hahn
Yeah.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Now, I don't care about that. God bless you. But I'm just talking about. In terms of the sheer people knowing what you might be talking.
Don Hahn
All I'm saying is in the middle of like a month where all this everything, sports is going on, it's. It was. I just felt like, interesting choice for now. And that's a list. We could do it.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
What's the guy's name? Strategy. Interesting strategy.
Don Hahn
A bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see how it works.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
But the metal people enjoyed it. And I just want everyone to remember this when I randomly, in June, give you like a top five MCs from LA. All of which, by the way, would be more famous than everyone on the list. I just want everyone to remember, okay,
Don Hahn
we all do what we want, follow our own rules.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
We check our. We make our list. We check them twice.
Don Hahn
That's all. And I. I was sure I would
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
know someone that was.
Don Hahn
I was waiting about traffic. I didn't know again, I had bad. I had bands in mind, but I don't know the names of the singers. That's the problem that I had.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
I was sure.
Don Hahn
It's like me naming American goalies. I'm terrible at it.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
I thought he'd at least have like Ozzy. And I'm like, oh, cool.
Don Hahn
Yeah. No, no, that's amazing.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
No, Ozzy.
Don Hahn
Queens rec, though.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Queens, right? At least I know Queens, right? I know who they are. Yeah, but that's it.
Don Hahn
Well, you know what else?
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
What's that?
Don Hahn
We have a game time. It's brought to you by Telemardu Irish Whiskey. Because when it's game time,
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
It's Tolly time.
Don Hahn
So the Mets are in la. They're taking on the Dodgers. Because when you need a slump buster, who better than the Dodgers? Right? Coverage immediately follows Dan Grasse on 880 at 9:30 sharp. The Rangers, they visit the Panthers. The coverage on 1050 starts at 6:30. It is also right tonight is the Jonathan Quick final. That's right game of his career. Great. He's from the Tri State Area, UMass. And of course he's American.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
El.
Don Hahn
He is an American goalie that I'm learning, which is nice. That was a bad moment for me. Top five, worst moment for me.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
I'll do that on Wednesday. That's my list. On Wednesday.
Don Hahn
Yeah, that's easy. Top five Yankees. By the way, they're back home in the Bronx facing their fans, which might be a lot tougher than facing the Angels, I might say because they have struggled of late as well. First pitch,705. So coming up shortly, will Warren on the mound. Oh boy. For the Yankees, no Ben Rice in the lineup tonight. No Trent Grisham either. Note that Telemardu, the original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cash matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Telemardu or try the new Telemardu honey during today's action. Glasses up to enjoying. Tell them are due responsibly. Finishing up with some calls. How about Chauncey and Westwood? Chauncey.
Caller Chauncey
Hey, what's up guys? So definitely wasn't happy to hear that MSG wouldn't have the first round. And you know, I'm sure the playoff adrenaline, I won't be too broken up about it once game time starts. But Peter, you know, you, you were talking about, you don't really get it because, you know, the commanders don't have a, like a hometown broadcast. I mean, I'm, I'm lucky enough to be, you know, young enough to where I don't know Knicks basketball without this current MSC crew.
Don Hahn
Wow.
Caller Chauncey
So it's like even games that they, even the games that they're like also on the simulcast on National. I'll check in over there. And it feels like I'm in foreign territory. I go back to MSG and I'm back at home. And one thing they've, they've done such a great job over the years. MSG is, they've kept the crew consistent. The guys in the studio, you, Alan, Mike and Clyde. It's, it's. I, aside from being a huge Knicks fan, I just genuinely love the MSG broadcast. Let's go, Knicks.
Don Hahn
Thank you, Chauncey.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
And I was downplaying it earlier but just to be clear, for the, for the, for the Knicks fans and the local baseball fans who love their local broadcasts, I totally understand why your preference would be that, for sure.
Don Hahn
All right, quickly here. Bobby and Belmore. Bobby.
Caller Chauncey
Yeah, hi, how are you? Listen, I don't understand why they will. They said, well, they're starters. If they Denver, they would have won the game. They would. At home court over Denver in the NBA Finals. I know it's. Everyone does this today. I've seen all these guys.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Thoughts, Alan?
Don Hahn
We only have 27. Yeah. Can't worry about the Finals. You got to worry about keeping your guys healthy and not have any crazy injuries that could happen. You never know about home court advantage in the finals if you get to the finals, if, if it's Denver, so. Well, that's how we're going to end that.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Rosenberg)
Let's run it back.
Don Hahn
Don't be back with us tomorrow. We're going to run it back tomorrow. Enjoy the games tonight, everybody.
