Peter Rosenberg
That sounds like heaven to me.
Don Hahn
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers Don Han and Rosenberg.
Peter Rosenberg
Take you up until 7:00. Got a big show tomorrow.
Don LaGreca
Big show. Mark Spears locked in. Give us, give us what we need to know about more about Mike Brown and what he see. He knows Mike Brown pretty well, so he's he, he agreed to join us tomorrow. We got that.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Dave Maloney is going to join us as well at 4 o' clock for a shoulder check charity. He comes on every year and it's topical because of what the Rangers have been able to do over the last couple of days. Give Chris Drury credit. Again, none of these things are dead sexy, but he's reimagining the roster. He's getting players cheaper than a lot of people projected them. He got Gavrikov at like $2 million less than some other defenses.
Don LaGreca
A bit sexy because it's, it's a bit sexy.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, it's not dead sexy, but it's.
Don LaGreca
You're trying to, you're trying to rejuven Adam Fox as like a legit. Right. Right. Like, this is the Norris Trophy guy. So you got to put somebody next to him that allows him to be the player he can be. And not everybody going like, Adam Fox is a disaster.
Peter Rosenberg
What Lindgren was back in the day was.
Don LaGreca
But Linger's problem with Lingering is as great as he was, and they were such a good pair. Every time he got. I mean, he just kept breaking down physically. Well, the thing just reached that point, right?
Peter Rosenberg
The King with Ryan Lindgren, if I put him in a room with 500 people and threw a tomato, a soup can into the crowd, he'd be the one to get hit in the forehead. He just was a puck magnet. He was a Nordberg. He was just.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, right From.
Peter Rosenberg
But not because he didn't know what he was doing.
Don LaGreca
No, he just was.
Peter Rosenberg
He was a physical guy that always just seemed to get hit, get with pucks and sticks. And you'd see him like after the game, he just, he was a punching bag, always bruised up. And he got. Love him because he played with such a. Such an ability, but it started to catch up with him.
Don LaGreca
He gave you everything it took. Whatever it took. He would give it. He would give you. That's. I, that's what I loved about him as a player. But you need guys like him so that guys like Adam Fox can just be at their best. And so that's why I think getting a player like that could be critical. And we'll see where it goes. Because, I mean, Fox has not been the same in the last couple of years.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, mostly I think because of injury. I think the shoulder.
Don LaGreca
That was two years ago, right?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. And he re injured it this year. And then what was it? Was it the hip? Something happened in the Washington series in the first round last year that I think really affected him. There's something with the leg that happened in that Washington series, which is a shame because they were sweeping that series and he got hurt in one of the later games that really banged it up. They needed help there. So I. So again, it's not like a household name or anything, but he did something. And getting players cheaper, being able to get Cooley for less than $4 million. You know, and the other thing that people need to bring up, everybody kind of looked at Borgen. They gave him a contract getting $4 million. Look at what these defensemen are getting paid.
Don LaGreca
They gave it to him early.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, they gave it to him early. And it was smart. So listen, you got cap problems, you're going to have to make some decisions to raise an eyebrow. And. But then ultimately you start to see. And the free agent period next year. Just saying. Just saying. Connor McDavid's a free agent. And as we were saying, with LeBron James for the Knicks, you want to make sure. Not saying that it's going to happen, but you want to make sure that if it could happen, that you've got the ability to make it happen. Right. You've got to keep that in mind.
Don LaGreca
When you always believe that. Right. It doesn't mean you're going to get him, but you want to make sure that in a year that he could be available that you have the ability to do it if it's there. Because the one thing you don't want is for a player like that to get on the market and say, you know, I would have gone to New York, right? You know, they, they were all capped out.
Peter Rosenberg
You don't want the story when he writes his book about his history. That boy. I was going to sign with the yeah, I was going to sign with the Rangers, but they just didn't have any cap space. People don't want to hear that.

The other thing that we've talked about, besides LeBron James and the baseball teams kind of going south, is my Top five American Bands. People still want to talk about that. So let's bring in Jay in Newark here on espn New York. What's up, J?
Caller
Hey, what's up, guys? So I guess because of my age, grunge is a important part of my music taste. So I gotta say, Nirvana, okay, is an important part of a rock history. The Unplugged was amazing.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, it's probably one of the better unplugs.
Don LaGreca
See, if that's an album I probably would take with me to the. I thought.
Peter Rosenberg
I thought the Alice in Chains one was better. Oh, no, but the Nevada one was. Was very good. It's. But we're still talking about.
Caller
It was hypnotic. They gave us Dave Gro, who did Fool Fighters, Another great album.
Don LaGreca
Oh.
Peter Rosenberg
From an influential stammer. But it's three albums, so unfortunately, that's all we got. Right, but what else you got, Jay?
Caller
Well, no, just that. I mean, I think all the soil stuff with Kurt Cobain being a tragic icon and I don't know, the aura of Nirvana, I thought, deserves some. Some praise.
Peter Rosenberg
But it takes me back because, you know what's interesting about Nirvana and Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. Pearl Jam survived, unfortunately, lost Kurt Cobain. Chris Cornell passed away a few years ago with Soundgarden and Audio Slave I thought was really underrated.
Don LaGreca
Yep.
Peter Rosenberg
Is that hip hop is so taken over. And I think part of the reason for that is because we never really got like, grunge had that. Listen. Smells like Teen spirit came out, what.
Don LaGreca
91, 34 years ago.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, it's a long time ago, but it. Some of the bands came out of it, but a lot of it was quick, you know, and it really. I think it opened the door. Like we're. I was really interested to see where that was going to progress out to, like, what would. Now. We saw the Food Fighters.
Don LaGreca
It turned right. Well, Foo Fighters.
Caller
Right.
Don LaGreca
But. But you saw what it turned into. Right? It's sort of Smashing Pumpkins and. And. And Stone Temple Pilots and.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don LaGreca
And then it, like. All of a sudden, there's Bush. Like, the sound. It almost evolved into more of a A mainstream sound.
Peter Rosenberg
But the leader out of the. Out of the gate was Nirvana.
Don LaGreca
Oh, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And you just wonder if. If he doesn't pass away.
Don LaGreca
No.
Peter Rosenberg
At his own hands, unfortunately. What if they continued to grow? Because the thing with. None of them cared about popularity, didn't want it. But as big as Pearl Jam was, Nirvana was like. It hit this country like it's nothing we've ever seen before the sound. And it opened the doors for all those other bands. You just wonder what's the Seattle.
Don LaGreca
If it.
Peter Rosenberg
If it's sustained. If Nirvana kept it going. Because the Foo Fighters are amazing. They're not Nirvana in the sense. It's a different sound. It is. It's not the same sound a little bit, but it's. I know it's.
Don LaGreca
I would say it's a grown up version. Yeah, it's a grown up verse.
Peter Rosenberg
There was a rawness that.
Don LaGreca
Oh, my God. I mean, there's some songs. I can't even say the name of them. Like, Heart Shaped Box. Just look at the lyrics.
Peter Rosenberg
I know. She's Honeyman in Home. Dell. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, man?
Caller
Yes. So I'm gonna go way back here. You guys nagged the Dead. Nag fish. But I saw Crossing Sils and Dash open for the Dead at a comic show in Buffalo in 88. And I would add young to that equation.
Don LaGreca
Oh, yeah.
Caller
CSM Y.
Peter Rosenberg
I didn't get that last part. What did you say?
Caller
Oh, no, no.
Don LaGreca
Csn.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, okay. Okay. I loved.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And Young's done amazing things solo.
Don LaGreca
Neil Young is great. You talk about an unplugged.
Caller
Fantastic.
Don LaGreca
Yeah. Look, Crosby, Stills Nash is an American classic. But I'd still say it goes along with. Like. With the Ramones and everything else. Just not enough. Right?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, it wasn't. It was long because he had the Southern Cross. Came out a little bit later on.
Don LaGreca
Is the great song.
Peter Rosenberg
It's. It's. Yeah, that Definitely worth consideration. Anybody else? Again, completely high. He was.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
He mentioned Cream. He didn't mention it, but it was on the line.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Again, very short period of time. Cream was amazing.
Don LaGreca
Clapton. Yeah, but how are they American?
Peter Rosenberg
That is true. Not American at all. Yeah, I think people sometimes lose that. But he mentioned Cream. Yeah, I like Cream.
Don LaGreca
But.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, Cream doesn't count because it's English. Marco in Charlotte Yarn ESPN New York.
Caller
Hey, guys.
Peter Rosenberg
What's up?
Caller
Hey, guys. I thank you very much for mentioning Stone Sour. I think it's like a very underrated. Sorry, I'll just leave. I was thinking Stone Sour, too, but probably not top five. But where would you put Red Hot Chili Pepper on your list?
Peter Rosenberg
Somebody brought them up earlier. They're definitely a lot of longevity, a lot of great.
Don LaGreca
I gave you all the songs. I mean, they're.
Peter Rosenberg
Marco, they're out. No, no. They are an outstanding band. No question about it. And, you know, they. And you just read the list of songs, and they're all great. Now. They didn't have the commercial success of the bands that I have in the five because of the genre of music. It's not metal with that alternative kind of thing. But they were. The thing is they. They hit the scene. They may kind of, like, didn't have a lot going on, and then it kind of just blew up again in the early 90s for them. Do you ever see their behind the Music?
Don LaGreca
No.
Peter Rosenberg
Really interesting.
Don LaGreca
Is it?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't even want to. I don't even want to say that. I'll tell you the story. One of the stories that I took from that behind the Music. Very disturbing. I'll tell you. Off the area. I don't think it's.
Don LaGreca
It's not for air.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not fair.
Don LaGreca
But Disney.
Peter Rosenberg
Flea was an interesting character.
Don LaGreca
You see them when they were in. They were like. They were bad guys in Point. Is it Point Break? Yeah, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
It was just. Just the. Why is the lead singer escaping? My name Anthony Cadence? Anthony Cadis was. Yeah, he shot himself in the foot.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
In that. And then Flea.
Don LaGreca
Flea's a huge Laker fan.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, is he? Oh, I didn't even know that.
Don LaGreca
Laker fan. Oh, yeah. Like, almost like obnoxious Laker fan. Yeah. Over the top. He's the Spike Lee of Lakers. He's at every game. He's a psycho Laker fan. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
He's been in a bunch of movies, too.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah. So they've.
Don LaGreca
How about performing completely naked with a base and just a sock?
Peter Rosenberg
Not everybody can pull that off.
Don LaGreca
Not having that kind of confidence.
Peter Rosenberg
Alan and I can, but not everybody else can pull that off for sure. If you went on a road trip and you didn't stop for a Big Mac or drop a crispy fry between the car seats or use your McDonald's bag as a placemat, then that wasn't a road trip. It was just a really long drive at participating McDonald's.

So when we're talking about the Olympics during ENN the that that the NHL will be in the Olympics. The Winter Olympics. And we were talking about well you know, how are we going to watch these games in prime time. And we keep thinking for some reason it always feels like oh my God. So a game that would be at 8 o' clock in Italy. Well that's going to be in the middle of the night. No, it's the opposite. So we won't really miss anything. It's just most of the stuff be.
Peter Rosenberg
During the day and I should have known that because when I said about Nagano.
Don LaGreca
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Where the games were at 2, 3 o' clock in the morning for games that were prime time in Japan. That's going that the east like you go west like or east and west.
Don LaGreca
Everybody that was screaming at the radio yelling at you were right.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm a moron.
Don LaGreca
We heard you. We just keep, we keep doing the same thing. And I'm a guy like I've been in Europe like I've been like I understood I've done it and I just always forget it's the opposite. But anyways. Peter Rosenberg
What's the matter with you? Let's go to the phones. Angelo is in Mawa. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Angel?
Caller
Hey, guys. Big fan, long time listener. I just. I just noticed. I don't feel like maybe southern rock is being fairly representative. ZZ Top, Leonard Skynyrd, ccr, Tom Petty and Heartbreakers.
Don LaGreca
Yeah, we took out Tom Petty because we aren't going. Because even though it's end the Heartbreakers, if we're not. If your name is first, it's not a band, right? Like Springsteen, E Street Band. So we take those guys out.
Peter Rosenberg
Ccr.
Don LaGreca
We mentioned ccr.
Peter Rosenberg
I would put of the ones that you just mentioned ccr.
Don LaGreca
There's a lot.
Peter Rosenberg
Is the one.
Don LaGreca
There's a lot there because, like.
Peter Rosenberg
Because Skynyrd. I like Leonard Skynyrd. You know, Freebird is one of the great songs of all time. Give me three steps. Sweet home Alabama.
Don LaGreca
Oh, my God.
Peter Rosenberg
But I guess you're a die hard fan. Like, how deep does the catalog go as far as resonating with the general public outside of the songs I just mentioned?
Caller
No, I know what you're saying. And the fact that they died so young. Big part is an influence here, but. Yeah, no, I guess you got a point there.
Peter Rosenberg
You definitely got a point because I think body of work matters and that's why you can look at like people are killing me about Chicago, but like the body of work is just so extensive.
Don LaGreca
A million songs.
Peter Rosenberg
The only thing I'll say is Chicago just a little bit too yacht rocky to soft rock for people but 25.
Don LaGreca
Or 64 is great song.
Peter Rosenberg
Is a heavy song. That is. I know it's got horns in it, but that song rocks, man. Like so. Yeah, they've got some, you know, wishing you were here. Some, like, easy listening stuff. But still a really, really good band. Anthony and Keyport, you're on ESPN New York.
Caller
Hey, how's it going, guys?
Don LaGreca
What's up?
Caller
This is an awesome topic to talk about. I got three more that I haven't heard brought up yet.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Caller
Allman Brothers, Rage against the Machine and Steely Dan.
Peter Rosenberg
Steely Dan is a really good one. Steely Dan's a very good one.
Don LaGreca
Oh, my God. One of my favorite songs.
Peter Rosenberg
Rage against the Machine, I love because. But we're talking with Rage. What three albums. The first album is one of the greatest albums.
Caller
I don't know if that count that the blank on the name. But Morello is the best rock star, American rock star alive right now.
Peter Rosenberg
Listen. So she said Rage against the Machine. Who else did you say?
Caller
Allman Brothers and Steely Dan.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. So Allman brother, like, I love time, you know, tied to the whipping post. Oh, Lord, I feel like I'm dying. But how deep does the catalog go?
Don LaGreca
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know if you have. If your computer will allow. Do you want like a Best of Allman Brothers?
Don LaGreca
Well, I know the great, the electronic whip wizard. Howie Singer loves the Allman Brothers.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, they're good.
Don LaGreca
He's just like, that's.
Peter Rosenberg
Do you realize there's every band that people are mentioning are great.
Don LaGreca
Let's see. Rambler man.
Peter Rosenberg
Of course.
Don LaGreca
Yep. Midnight Rider.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, very.
Don LaGreca
Wow, Melissa. That's a good song, right? That's a good one. A lot of these. I don't whip and post.
Peter Rosenberg
I gotta be there, right?
Don LaGreca
I'm frozen now, so I can't.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, there you go.
Don LaGreca
God forbid I can scroll just to get good. Like, I mean, can we just. Can we get to it? Throw it.
Peter Rosenberg
Throw it right through that window.
Don LaGreca
Do it. Do it.
Peter Rosenberg
What's gonna happen? They're gonna let you go. They just. We just started the show. You can't break it up that quick. Right through the window. Just don't. In between Jacob and.
Don LaGreca
No.
Peter Rosenberg
And I don't want to hurt him. Yeah. But you know what? I think it's time.
Don LaGreca
How about that window, you know, right out there.
Peter Rosenberg
There's nobody here anymore. Tell you the next time it freezes at that. That's the reason to tune in tomorrow at 3 o' clock. Will Allen have a meltdown where he.
Don LaGreca
Throws the computer God forbid I can't scroll.
Peter Rosenberg
It's hurting the show, man.
Don LaGreca
Of course it's hurting.
Peter Rosenberg
Peter's not here like the rest of the month. Why don't you move over to the other computer? You think I should have to, man?
Don LaGreca
Would it look better on camera, too, by the way?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know.
Don LaGreca
Feel a little washed out over there.
Caller
Here?
Don LaGreca
Yeah, but can we get some stuff?
Peter Rosenberg
I don't want washed out. Radio, where you're trying to make a point in your computer. Freeze. See, that's what I need. But like, through a window. And you know what? Don't even explain it. Like, Jacob, we don't even clean it up.
Don LaGreca
No.
Peter Rosenberg
They come in the next morning and the windows broken, the computers there, it's.
Don LaGreca
All on the ground.
Peter Rosenberg
And then when they ask all of it, shrug your shoulders like, dude, I don't know.
Don LaGreca
It doesn't work.
Peter Rosenberg
Is it breaking? So what's the difference? It's doing as good on the floor as it was doing when it was actually upright.
Don LaGreca
It'd spike it. I can. I could.
Peter Rosenberg

Don, Hahn & Rosenberg: Episode Hour 4 - Last Call Crew
Release Date: July 2, 2025
The fourth hour of the "Don, Hahn & Rosenberg" podcast dives deep into a blend of sports analysis and musical nostalgia, interspersed with lively interactions from listeners. Hosted by Don LaGreca, Don Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg, the episode balances discussions on the NHL, the New York Rangers' roster strategies, and a passionate debate about top American bands, particularly focusing on the grunge movement.
The conversation kicks off with insights into the New York Rangers' recent performance and strategic moves.
Don LaGreca highlights the importance of solid defensive players in rejuvenating key talents:
"You're trying to rejuvenate Adam Fox as a legit right. Right. Like, this is the Norris Trophy guy. So you got to put somebody next to him that allows him to be the player he can be." [01:32]
Peter Rosenberg adds depth to the discussion by analyzing player injuries and their impacts:
"I think the shoulder...[Fox's] injury was two years ago, and he re-injured it this year." [03:03]
The hosts debate the financial strategies of acquiring players like Mike Brown and the importance of managing the team's salary cap to potentially attract high-profile free agents like Connor McDavid.
Peter Rosenberg emphasizes the necessity of financial foresight:
"You want to make sure that if it could happen, that you've got the ability to make it happen." [04:17]
Don LaGreca concurs, stressing the importance of readiness over mere hope:
"What you don't want is for a player like that to get on the market and say, you know, I would have gone to New York, right? You know, they were all capped out." [04:36]
Transitioning from sports, the trio engages in a nostalgic exploration of top American bands, with a special focus on the grunge era.
A caller from Newark, Jay, initiates the discussion by championing Nirvana:
"Nirvana is an important part of rock history. The Unplugged was amazing." [07:13]
Peter Rosenberg acknowledges the impact of Nirvana's "Unplugged" performance:
"Oh, it's probably one of the better unplugs." [07:27]
The conversation evolves to comparisons between Nirvana and other contemporary bands like Alice in Chains and Foo Fighters. Don LaGreca reminisces about the physicality of players like Ryan Lindgren, drawing parallels to the raw energy of grunge music.
Peter Rosenberg reflects on the enduring legacy of grunge bands and their influence on modern music:
"Nirvana hit this country like it's nothing we've ever seen before the sound. And it opened the doors for all those other bands." [09:26]
Another caller, Marco from Charlotte, introduces bands like Stone Sour and Red Hot Chili Peppers into the conversation. The hosts discuss the depth of these bands' catalogs and their cultural impact.
Don LaGreca appreciates the extensive body of work from bands like Chicago:
"A million songs." [18:31]
The dialogue underscores the lasting influence of these bands and their essential place in American music history.
Throughout the episode, listeners contribute their viewpoints, enriching the discussion with diverse perspectives.
Jay from Newark emphasizes the tragic legacy of Kurt Cobain and the enduring aura of Nirvana, advocating for their recognition in rock history.
Marco from Charlotte brings attention to underrated bands like Stone Sour and inquires about the inclusion of Red Hot Chili Peppers in the top five list, prompting discussions on commercial success versus artistic impact.
Angelo from Mawa expresses appreciation for the mention of Stone Sour, highlighting the band's underrated status.
Anthony from Keyport suggests adding Allman Brothers, Rage Against the Machine, and Steely Dan to the top bands list, introducing a broader spectrum of rock genres into the conversation.
Don LaGreca humorously navigates technical difficulties during the call-ins, adding a light-hearted element to the episode:
"Let’s throw it right through that window." [20:51]
Towards the end of the episode, the hosts experience technical issues, leading to a comedic exchange about frozen screens and broken equipment. This segment showcases the hosts' camaraderie and ability to maintain humor amidst challenges.
Peter Rosenberg laments the technical mishap:
"I'm a moron." [16:07]
