So welcome to 1050 and of course the ESPN app, which you should download immediately, if not sooner. Hopefully everybody is having a great start to their Memorial Day weekend. Just so you know, we'll be back with you again on Tuesday at 3. At that point, we're going to be previewing game four of the Eastern Conference Final. Where will the series be? 21 Knicks, 21 Pacers. Should be a lot of fun to find out. Let's close it out with your calls. Take you up until seven and then Pat O' Keefe will take you through right till tip off. 1-800-919-3776. Let's go to Griffin in Connecticut. Haven't talked to you in a while. How are you, buddy?
Griffin
Hey, guys. How are you?
Peter Rosenberg
Good.
Allen Hahn
Hey, buddy.
Griffin
Hey, Peter. I have a, I have a baseball question. My nick point. So this is Tyler Murray's first year that he's done the Knicks. So all what the Knicks really needed was Tyler Murray. He's a good luck charm.
Peter Rosenberg
It feels.
Griffin
Because it feels like he's a good luck charm for them because they're, they're four wins away from an Eastern cup, from an NBA Finals, and they haven't been there in how long. So it seems like Kyler Murray's a good luck charm.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, definitely go with it, right? They've never gotten this far. God, that's a long time ago. 2000. Yeah, why not? Makes sense to me.
Allen Hahn
Tyler Murray was probably four years old.
Peter Rosenberg
No, he's 32.
Allen Hahn
So, okay, he was eight.
Peter Rosenberg
He was seven or eight years old. That's pretty crazy. What's your baseball point, Griff? Let's hear it.
Griffin
My baseball point is with the Yankee rotation, the way it's going Right now this is why you just don't panic early on in the year because early on in the year everybody was clinging. You got to make a move now. You have to make a move now. You have to make one now. You have to make one now. If you don't make one now, it's not going to work out well. It looks like it's working out fine right now. I still think they're going to have to make a move. But this is why you just got to be patient any long season and see what happens because now it's doing just fine.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, you should have done that last year, remember, because when last year it was all well what are we going to do? And then who comes along but he'll to end up winning rookie of the Year for you now. You went, you went got Max Freed and he's a, he's a tremendous pitcher and he's probably going to win a Cy Young this year the way he started out. And, and Rodin is everything that you thought you were getting from when you.
Griffin
Starting to come into a groove now.
Peter Rosenberg
But Griffin, and thank you for the phone call, we're going to get into a lot of baseball, hopefully later than sooner because when the Knicks are done, whether it's this round, next round or a championship, eventually we're going to turn to the baseball and the Yankees are going to be in really good shape. They are in a very weak league and a weaker division. The Blue Jays are starting to come up a little bit, but the Yankees are getting a good spot. But you know, they might try to retool, do something with the rotation when, when they go for, go for it down the stretch run. But right now the Yankees are in really, really good shape. And the Mets, they're not hitting, but I think they eventually will. But they've fallen out of first place and Philadelphia just came off a series with the Rockies. So, you know, they're doing well.
Allen Hahn
And it's a, and it's, and it is a big weekend here for, for the Mets. I, you got to at least get one here with the Dodgers. Don, you don't feel good getting swept by the Dodgers?
Peter Rosenberg
No, because they're just, you know, you just lost a series to the Red Sox. You lost a series to the Yankees. You won, you won a series against Pittsburgh because it's Pittsburgh. But you didn't hit. You got shut out the last game there. So no, it has not been good for the Mets at all. Now you coming into a team that, you know if you were to lose to the Dodgers. They are the defending champions. They're one of the best teams in baseball. There's no shame in that. But, you know, it's starting all of a sudden accumulate here for them. So we'll see where we're at. Come. Come after this weekend. Let's go to Jay in Newark. You're on espn, New York. What's up, Jay?
Allen Hahn
Hey, Jay.
Caller
Hey, guys. How you doing today? Thanks for taking a call.
Peter Rosenberg
No problem.
Caller
So an earlier conversation with. Blew my mind. I think. I think it was you, Don. I was talking about fans who prefer to lose their conference finals than go and possibly get destroyed in a finals matchup. I can't even understand that. Yeah, I can't understand that. Just for example. I mean, I've been a New York fan forever. One of the more gratifying seasons and magical seasons was that 99 this season where Pat went down and Marcus Camby and Latrell and LJ got themselves together and ran and had that run, and we got destroyed by San Antonio. I mean, they had an amazing team, but that was like. I still think about that team and love that team. So just a quick example that sometimes a team is a surprise team and it makes a run. You know, even if you lose in the finals, man, it's still gratifying as a fan. So anyone who thinks that way, this isn't a very good fan at all. That was it. It just blew my mind that someone said that.
Peter Rosenberg
No, listen, it's a long time ago. I can't give you names, all right? But I did hear that a lot when the Giants were destroyed by the Ravens. God, I wouldn't even have wanted to go. Now, maybe that's a Yankee fan that is used to winning a bunch of championships so they can kind of spit on losing. Maybe some Yankee fans feel about that, you know, losing to the Dodgers, like it doesn't mean anything. We didn't win the championship. But you're winning your league. You're still hanging a banner, you know.
Allen Hahn
Well, and you still get to have the fun. That and you still get a couple more weeks of being a part of it and, you know, living through it.
Peter Rosenberg
And listen, we haven't even gotten there yet. But the Joey who was the phone call, and he can deny it all he wants. His tone was, why bother? You're going to get beat by okc. And what I would say is, all right, first of all, we don't know that 100%. Also, you know what? They suffer an injury, right? SGA gets hurt all of a Sudden that changes everything. And I'm totally with you, Peter. They haven't played in Minnesota yet. All right, so do I think the Thunder are going to win? Yes. But would I be surprised if all of a sudden they're playing into game six? Denver took them to game seven. Now, they took care of business in game seven and wiped the floor with the Nuggets, but they still faced elimination. You know, so you want to at least get your chance. And also you learn sometimes from losing. Now the Knicks didn't. They lost to the spurs and lost in the conference final the next year to the Pacers. And the Giants didn't get back to the super bowl for another seven years after losing to the, to the Ravens. And it was a completely different team with a different coach and a different quarterback. But sometimes, Peter, especially when you're in the infancy of this window with bringing in cat, bringing in bridges, that you don't think the experience of playing the Thunder, even if you get beat badly, that, that there can't be some value and learn something from that that you can take in the next year?
Allen Hahn
Oh, no, it's, it's a crazy take. And by the way, it's like we're sitting here being like, oh, do series change and not go the way you thought? Do I have to remind you of the Celtics series?
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Allen Hahn
You steal a couple games, all of a sudden you win one. Oh, and then their best player gets hurt. And like, these things happen. And guess what? The championships all count. Go back in history, Don. Point out the great team who won a Super bowl or an NBA championship against a team who missed a player. See how many of their fans go, yeah, but we didn't beat so and so. It doesn't work that way.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, it doesn't work that way.
Allen Hahn

You know, it's not like OKC is, you know, trying for the third straight ring. I mean, this is new to them, too.
Allen Hahn
All right, well, that's why I know Allen's like, super hyped off of them. But you can't just start guaranteeing titles with a group that's never done it. You can't say they look like it.
Peter Rosenberg
So we'll see if they were the Warriors.
Allen Hahn
Okay, I get it. They're not, right?
Peter Rosenberg
That would be a little different story if you had a team that had been there done that they haven't done. Now, listen, I think, I think there's something to what Alan's saying, that they are going to be the clear cut favorite. And I would probably, I think the bet, the easy bet to make is that they're going to win the NBA title. But nothing's, nothing's definite. And even if you told me it was definite, I still want to go out there and give it the try. Let's go to Dan in upstate New York. You're on espn New York. What's up, Dan. Hello, friends.
Allen Hahn
How are you doing?
Peter Rosenberg
Good. How are you?
Allen Hahn
I'm doing good. I called in just to piggyback off of the story from earlier where the Yankees fan ran into the Dodgers fan and then he was cheering on the Dodgers against their rival. So I had a similar experience last year right after song Mets fan that grew up in a family of Yankees fans. So I was largely ignored. So I was shopping last year right after we got beat in playoffs, and there was a Dodgers fan completely decked out in the parking lot, and I went up to him and just in the spirit of camaraderie, shook his hand and I said, grimace died so that you may live.
Griffin
Go take care of business. And I think that plays into your.
Allen Hahn
Point about, you know, just everyone get along.
Griffin
Yeah, sure.
Allen Hahn
Against your rivals, even if the previous team beat your team.
Peter Rosenberg
As a Met fan, I was rooting for the Dodgers because that's. I mean, listen, the Dodgers are arrival. They beat us fair and square. They're the better team. And, And I think there's something to the geography of not having the other team in town win, but, you know.
Allen Hahn
Teach their own something to losing to the team that won the whole thing.
Peter Rosenberg
I've always felt that way, Peter, that, hey, at least I lost to the championship, that somebody else needs a better job. We couldn't.
Allen Hahn
But yeah, like, you wouldn't have rather have lost to the Redskins than the Broncos? I mean, they lost 42, 10. Wouldn't you rather have lost to the team that did the blowout?
Peter Rosenberg
I just. Yeah, of course. And then because at least there's that feeling of, I lost to the champ. There are some teams. And I also just don't feel a hatred for the team. I can't be like, if you beat me fair and square, why do I hate you? I don't love you. I don't like getting beat. But if you beat me like the Astros cheating, that's a different story. You know, if you beat me in a fair and square, that's a different story. But if you. If you're just better than me, I don't know enough for me to hate you.
Allen Hahn
I hated losing badly and repeatedly in different years to the Patriots. I really did. And it was mostly fair. But I mean, we can argue about that. But.
Peter Rosenberg
But that's the thing. And also, I got to say this too, especially getting older and what I do for a living and having the absolute privilege of getting sometimes to interview and get to know these athletes, that it's usually the fan bases that I hate. More than the team. Like I got. I don't really have any reason to hate the Dallas Cowboys. They seem like they're not. I don't really. There's nothing really to hate about them. Right. But I just always hate the Cowboys. But even America's team, like I hated the Cowboys because of their fans and they all jumped on the bandwagon or. But you know, Roger Stallback wasn't hateable. Tony Dorsett wasn't hateable. You know, now then. But you know Michael Irvin, yeah, he was a little hateable like that the 90s version of the Cowboys there. They rubbed me the wrong way. But like my hatred for the Cowboys.
Allen Hahn
Although Emmett, Emmett and Troy. Emmett, Emmett and Troy weren't too bad.
Peter Rosenberg
No, they weren't too bad. But there were some hateable. And listen, their owner, I just. Jerry Jones, I just can't stand his face and the White House and all that stuff. That was a very hateable team in the 90s, but in the 70s and early 80s, like Danny White, he was a. You seem like a nice guy, but it's the fan bases you hate. I mean, I don't know, is there anything hateable player wise about the Philadelphia Eagles? Hertz seems like a decent. I don't know, Jason Kelsey's a little irritating, but when he played he wasn't.
Allen Hahn
Well, well, well.
Peter Rosenberg
Notice it was a. Laughter retired.
Allen Hahn
Yeah, I didn't care about Jason Kelsey till now. Now he's annoying.
Peter Rosenberg
I'll say.
Allen Hahn
You know, the tush push makes them all somewhat annoying. And I gotta tell you, I never thought I'd feel this way. But as much as I loved him when he was here and he was such a nice guy, when you're playing them, especially in an important game and Saquon scores and does the little kid running around thing, I gotta tell you, for whatever reason, it is an incredibly obnoxious celebration. I want to punch him right in his throat.
Peter Rosenberg
I know, he did become dead in the throat. A little hateable for sure. But he's a good kid. We know that's a privilege of knowing something happened there. But here's the thing. That 18 year old Don Lagreca would despise him because all I would know was that. But you know, having met him and talked to him and knowing how good a kid he is, it's hard for me to ever hate Saquon Barkley, you know, so we do have that privilege of getting to know some of these guys. But before we had that, I mean I almost missed that in a way like ignorance was bliss, right Peter? Like as Michael always used to say, not knowing how the sausage was made kind of made it a little bit more fun. In both positive and negative.
Allen Hahn
Yes, but you get to know some things getting to be a little bit closer to it for sure.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. In both positive and negative ways. It kind of changes that.

Rosenberg, pick up at 7 o' clock and then it's pat o' keep getting ready for the now our pregame show before Knicks and Pacers at the Garden. Let's close it out with your calls at 1-800-919-3776. Tim is in Edison, you're on ESPN New York. Hi, Tim.
Griffin
Hey guys.
Peter Rosenberg
I got a Knicks point, but I want to ask it in baseball terms. Okay, sure. So you're in the World Series. Your, your fifth starter is pitching an absolute gem. Ninth, ninth innings coming up. Are you bringing in Mariano Rivera? Yeah, probably. That's what you do. Probably. Okay, yeah.
Griffin
Because I was just thinking, you know.
Peter Rosenberg
Along the same lines because you can. Everyone is going back and forth today whether to bring Brunson out at the five minute mark. Right. So I guess, yeah, you can make the case that you could bring in my Ren Rivera or you can make.
Caller
The case to leave in that guy in.
Peter Rosenberg
But you know what's interesting, Tim, I love your analogy because that's always a topic of conversation during baseball season. You know, Cole is money. Through eight innings, it's one nothing. He's only thrown 85 pitches. He struck out 12. But we've got to go to our closer because that's what we do. And here's the difference though, and see if you follow me. The five foul thing, I think changes it because the five foul thing is almost the same as do I bring in Rivera on a third consecutive game where the last time he got hit kind of hard like. And Tim, thanks for the phone call. Like Peter, I don't. I think the five fouls changes that narrative. Yeah, he's your star player. It's what we do. But with five fouls and how compromised he is defensively to begin with. And clearly he played not too foul out as a coach. You got to know that. So now he's tissue paper as far as being able to defend anybody. You know, I don't think it's a fait accompli. You had to put him back in the game. Tim Legler disagrees, Allen disagrees. But I think the five fouls changes that narrative dramatically, 100%.
Allen Hahn
I will say it's kind of interesting. Brunson's been so brilliant, but man, some of those fouls that got him to five were suspect. Like what was he thinking a couple of times? He just has to be aware in every spot. Listen, your defense isn't good enough to give us fouls. Like Mitchell Robinson picking up fouls you don't want. It's super frustrating, but you get it because he plays great defense. Jalen, you're not stopping anyone. Don't foul people for no reason.
Peter Rosenberg
And the other thing that frustrates me a little bit, and maybe this is wrong to bring up because Nick fans want to blindly defend Brunson, but. And I think it's an admirable quality, the way he takes charges and stuff. Sometimes I think he goes out of his way to draw fouls. Like, sometimes it just seems a little much, you know, and sometimes it works and you love it, but it's like.
Allen Hahn
No, that criticism is real.
Peter Rosenberg
I think it has to be. Like, I'm not gonna go as far as flopping, but you do see, like, he'll throw up a shot, and he just, like, throw his hip out to draw contact. Like, if it works, great. But it does sometimes get a little. It becomes a little much. And I just wonder if that works against him sometimes when it's so blatant that when he does get fouled that they'll look the other way.
Allen Hahn
Yeah, I think that is completely fair. And I think you have to be. You're wearing blue and orange glasses. If you're not seeing that sometimes. Sometimes he's foul hunting. I mean, that is part of his game. And by the way, I don't care for the most part, but you're right, there can be negative aspects. If you're overdoing it, it could cost you in a spot when you really should get a foul call. Although I don't know if there was a more glaring missed foul than the lack of a call on Obi Toppin on that dunk, which would have put them up for. And essentially ended the game. Knicks caught a break there and then, of course, couldn't do anything. Anything.
Peter Rosenberg
Brunson's look wasn't great, but Cat's look was pretty good. And Brunson threw an airball, and that was a brick by Cat. Like, when they kicked it back out, like, I'm. I'm expecting him to drain that three. We're. We're. We're. We're going on. We're going to double overtime. Didn't feel like that. Like, he got a pretty decent look there, I thought. And he barely touched the front of the rim and was so short. And.
Allen Hahn
And I just. I maintain, like, I just don't understand why Brunson, at the end of that game, after playing less than 40 minutes, looked so sort of sloppy and winded. It was very odd.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, it's. And we'll see. It's something to keep an eye on because certainly the Pacers think it's something that they have an advantage on. We'll see. Javier and Queen. Johnny spn, New York.
Griffin
Hey, what's going on, guys? Thanks for taking my call as always. Listen, Tyler. Tyler Murray is great. No disrespect to him, but till the day that I die, I will ride with Donnica McNutt every day of the week and twice on Sunday. All right.
Peter Rosenberg
I appreciate your fandom, but I think they're better off with what they got now for sure. But I do appreciate all that may all the.
Griffin
Jalen Blunson's light the way to victory tonight.
Allen Hahn
That's right.
Griffin
Similar to what's been talked about all week. Soto and the Knicks, I think expectations caused us to. To veer from reality. Right. You watch the Knicks all season, you knew that they had them in them to blow a game like that. But it's not going to devastate the series. With Soto, I think people had expectations of him hustling being a better defender, being a better leader, but money and all that doesn't do it. But like, like the Knicks and like Soto, I think they're both going to be okay. I think the Knicks take it tonight. Let's go, New York, baby. Let's go.
Peter Rosenberg
I listen, I don't know if this, all the dots connect here, but when you're trying to slay a dragon, the dragon does not go down easy. You know, when the Rangers had their, you know, 54 years, they had to go through the overtime in Game 7 against the Devils. And you know, the Giants, when they wanted to win their first super bowl, they trailed at the half against Denver, although they did win going away. But still, Peter, it doesn't, it just doesn't all of a sudden turn to gold. You're gonna, this. There's gonna be pain, there's gonna be, there's. It's not gonna be easy. I'm sorry. You don't go 52 years without a championship and then just a trophy's handed to you. There's going to be adversity, there's going to be things you're going to have to fight through. And the Pacers are going to be a pretty decent thing to have to.
Allen Hahn
Fight through before we get up out of here. Don, what do you think about the watch party moving to Central park tonight?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, it's a, it's a good place. I mean, the Rangers did it in their Stanley Cup Final. I think it's, I think it's cool.
Allen Hahn
I think it's awesome. And I mean, I guess also what.
Peter Rosenberg
It does, the weather was better.
Allen Hahn
Even if people lose their mind, at least they're in the middle of Central Park.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, hang in there, guys. There's a lot to be happy and have fun. It's Memorial Day weekend. Your Knicks are just four wins away to go into the championship. You got a lot of cool baseball, but please, please be safe, be responsible out there. If you're gonna drink, have fun. But don't drive and just be safe and have fun. And we will meet again. 3 o' clock on Tuesday. Hope talking about the Knicks already up in the series and putting Game one in their rearview mirror. So, buddy, I'll see you on Tuesday. Have a great Memorial Day weekend. You, too.

Don, Hahn & Rosenberg Podcast Summary
Episode: Hour 4: Last Call Crew
Release Date: May 23, 2025
In Episode Hour 4: Last Call Crew of the "Don, Hahn & Rosenberg" podcast, hosts Don LaGreca, Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg delve into a dynamic mix of New York sports discussions, spanning the NBA playoffs, Major League Baseball, and passionate fan interactions. Set against the backdrop of Memorial Day weekend, the trio engages with listeners, providing insightful commentary, heated debates, and entertaining anecdotes that capture the essence of New York’s vibrant sports culture.
As the episode kicks off, Peter Rosenberg sets the stage with an update on the ongoing NBA playoff series between the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers. With the Knicks holding a one-game lead in a best-of-seven series (00:42), the hosts anticipate a thrilling continuation as they approach game two at the Garden. Rosenberg highlights the significance of the upcoming game, emphasizing the momentum building for the Knicks:
“Knicks looking even the best of seven series up at one. … We got a lot of cool baseball, but please, please be safe, be responsible out there.” (02:25 – 02:30)
Griffin from Connecticut calls in to discuss his intriguing perspective on Knicks’ star player Tyler Murray, whom he views as a "good luck charm” for the team (01:34). Müller attributes this belief to Murray's influence during the Knicks' significant playoff run, suggesting that his presence could be pivotal in their pursuit of an Eastern Conference title:
“It feels like he's a good luck charm for them because they're four wins away from an Eastern cup, from an NBA Finals.” (01:48)
Transitioning to baseball, the hosts engage in a lively discussion about the New York Yankees’ rotation dynamics and the Mets’ ongoing challenges (02:25). Rosenberg praises the Yankees' current form while expressing skepticism about the Mets’ hitting performance:
“The Yankees are in really, really good shape. And the Mets, they're not hitting, but I think they eventually will.” (04:01)
Allen Hahn adds depth to the conversation by addressing the Mets' recent series losses, particularly to powerhouse teams like the Red Sox and Yankees, highlighting the team's defensive efforts despite offensive shortfalls:
“No, it has not been good for the Mets at all.” (04:10)
Jay from Newark shares his thoughts on fan sentiments regarding losing in conference finals, arguing that losing to a superior team still offers a sense of satisfaction:
“Sometimes a team is a surprise team and it makes a run. Even if you lose in the finals, man, it's still gratifying as a fan.” (04:47 – 05:46)
Rosenberg and Hahn counter Jay's points by discussing the broader implications of fan attitudes, drawing parallels with historical sports events and emphasizing the importance of valuing the journey over the outcome.
The conversation shifts to the nature of fan hate, with hosts Rosenberg and Hahn dissecting their disdain for specific teams' fanbases rather than the teams themselves. Rosenberg reflects on his personal aversion to the Dallas Cowboys' fans, despite having no issue with the team’s players:
“It’s usually the fan bases that I hate. More than the team.” (14:17)
Hahn echoes similar sentiments, particularly criticizing celebratory behaviors of opposing team players, such as Saquon Barkley’s touchdown celebrations, which he finds obnoxious and frustrating during critical game moments:
“I gotta tell you, for whatever reason, it is an incredibly obnoxious celebration. I want to punch him right in his throat.” (15:18)
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to analyzing Jalen Brunson’s performance for the Knicks, particularly his defensive contributions and foul management. Listener Tim from Edison poses a thought-provoking analogy comparing basketball to baseball closers, questioning whether Brunson should be rested or kept in the game amidst foul trouble:
“Your fifth starter is pitching an absolute gem. Ninth, ninth innings coming up. Are you bringing in Mariano Rivera? Yeah, probably.” (19:15)
Hahn and Rosenberg debate Brunson’s tactics, with Hahn suggesting that Brunson might be overusing fouls to gain strategic advantages, potentially costing the team in crucial moments:
“I think it's a little much. And I just wonder if that works against him sometimes when it's so blatant that when he does get fouled that they'll look the other way.” (21:57)
As the episode nears its conclusion, the hosts promote their upcoming pregame show before the Knicks and Pacers face off at the Garden. They also highlight the transition of their watch party to Central Park, commending it as a prime location inspired by the Rangers’ Stanley Cup Final festivities:
“It's a good place. I think it's cool.” (25:29)
They encourage listeners to continue engaging with the show, sharing final thoughts on the importance of perseverance and commitment as the Knicks vie for the championship:
“There’s a lot to be happy and have fun. … We will meet again. 3 o'clock on Tuesday.” (25:37 – 25:45)
