Last Call Crew 1-800-919-3776 who do you want to go to? There's a myriad of interesting are they.
Alan Hahn
Topics I like Andrew in Long Beach. Andrew, one thing we didn't talk about from this weekend. Go ahead Andrew. All right guys, I would like to.
Peter Rosenberg
Give UConn credit for all they've accomplished and they're still a talented team, the UConn people. They like to talk about MSG as stores south and it's time to put that narrative to bed. Sure is you had a sold out sea of red at the world's most famous yesterday. Zubi Edge of course with a great all around game. And don't look now but over the past two two games the Johnny is shooting 44% from downtown. Rick Pitino is the top coach in the nation.
Alan Hahn
Bab, I'll tell you what, hard to.
Don Hahn
Disagree with a lot you said there, buddy.
Alan Hahn
Everything there Sunday felt like a coronation, didn't it? Like it was. It was as if you weren't sure Sunday told you because that what Andrew's saying I agree with. It's like take back the garden kind of thing because even before UConn would take it over, Villanova took it over when they were great and St. John's really hasn't owned that building in a long time. And Pitino took it back. He made sure no we need more games in this place. I remember two years ago when he was talking about that now we gotta play more games in this building. But you gotta be good to get the crowd on your side. Otherwise when you play Syracuse it's gonna be all Syracuse people, Villanova gonna be all Villanova people and UConn is gonna be all UConn people. Well that wasn't the case on Sunday afternoon. That place was unbelievable. The atmosphere there, they hit eight threes. The way they get after it defensively, they're seventh in the country now, guys. I mean, they have them in that high 30 something years.
Don Hahn
So that's crazy. 91. The general feeling seems to be they will not get a three, a top three seed in a bracket for the tournament. And I just need to know why. If they win the Big east now, I can understand them maybe falling out of the top 10 if they get an early exit, but if they win the Big east, they're not going to drop below 7. So just do the math. Alan, if you're going to tell me or they're not a top two seed, okay, there are four brackets. That's the top eight teams getting covered. So then when you start getting to a three seed, you're starting to dip into outside the top 10 to give somebody else a three seed. Now if you tell me they don't respect the Big east, they don't respect Patino, fine. Why are they seven? They're seven right now.
Alan Hahn
No, they got to respect it.
Don Hahn
They've got to listen. If they go out early, different story. But if they are in the top seven and they win the Big east and even move up, I mean, why would they not get.
Alan Hahn
No, they should think about. How about this. So what we were talking about, St. John's at the Garden. They're now 80 at the Garden. The last time St. John's finished a season undefeated in their games at MSG during the regular season. 82, 83. How old were you?
Don Hahn
I was four.
Alan Hahn
82, 83. Don.
Don Hahn
82, 83.
Alan Hahn
Last time, St. John's really owned the Garden.
Don Hahn
So in February of 83, three Islanders.
Alan Hahn
Were on their way to their fourth straight Stanley Cup.
Don Hahn
That is an IOW was what, 15?
Alan Hahn
That's all you need to hear is that the Islanders were on their way to their fourth straight Stanley Cup. That's how long ago it was. Incredible.
Don Hahn
And it's deserved, too.
Alan Hahn
Patino's done a great job.
Don Hahn
He has done a terrific job and I think they deserve their due because we talked about it last week. If they're a five or a six, that could be a brutal first round matchup of the dance.
Alan Hahn
Yeah. No, it can't be that. But you're right. What happens in the Big east tournament still could resonate. And you don't want to slip at that point. I don't expect them to, but you don't. You. You can't have a slip there because they'll use it again.
Don Hahn
I see. I think they're itching to disrespect St. John's I don't think Patino is, is necessarily loved by the ncaa. I don't think there's, there's always a New York bias when it comes to things like that. I think the Big east gets disrespected now, so they're just looking for a slip up. So an early exit in the Big east might drop them down. But if they win, and I certainly expect that they've got an excellent, they'll be the one seed that they should be able to win this tournament and, and be possibly, dare I say, a top five, top six team in the nation. How can you stick them as a five in a bracket? How?
Alan Hahn
Next game at Butler. So that'll be Wednesday night. Will is in the car. Hey, Will.
Peter Rosenberg
Hey, guys, what's up?
Alan Hahn
I enjoy the lineup with the new show. Peter, welcome to the club. About being a parent, I gotta tell you, you're. You're gonna be on a great journey. I called because you're welcome, my friend. I call because I am. I am really concerned about the Knicks defense. It is terrible. I watch games and they give up routinely. They give up backdoor layups and they.
Don Hahn
Give up the baseline and people drive on them routinely. I mean, a couple of guys play.
Alan Hahn
Defense, but the whole group needs to have a better mindset, a toughness or something.
Caller
This is disgraceful.
Don Hahn
I don't know.
Alan Hahn
You're at the games, you see this nonsense.
Don Hahn
What do you think?
Alan Hahn
Yeah, it starts with obviously with Cat at center and he. They teams pick on him and pick and roll and it's a struggle for him, especially with a knee compromise. He's not moving as well as he. His aggressiveness defensively is starting to fall off. I don't know how much of that has to do with the knee or whatever it is, but that's why they're hoping that Mitchell Robinson, whenever he comes back, can make a difference. But it does, I believe. Start there. They've got to help out a lot in the paint and that leads to a lot of kick out open threes that are hard to close out on. It really does start with one breakdown.

Dan in Sayville.
Peter Rosenberg
Dan, gentlemen, good evening. Thanks for taking the call. Love all you guys. Peter, congrats man. Fellow girl dad. All the best, brother.
Don Hahn
Thank you dude.
Peter Rosenberg
Points pick and roll is brutal. I agree with the last caller. A quick gripe that I had was McBride after coming off a season high recently goes 1 for 7 and 0 for 4 from 3. Now these are big shots. You got to make some of these shots don't even have a hand in your face. You know Payne and Shannon are winning six man of the year, dragging you to the second round. And so inversely, Josh Hart doesn't even take one. You see him at the top of the key, has space sometimes and you know, doesn't make the shot. I would Love Allen's take on that. And lastly, I'm as optimistic as the next guy, but, you know, hard to hang my hat on Mitch being the answer. You know, hope isn't a strategy, and it can't be. You know, I really. I think his presence will be significant and it'll have an impact, but, you know, it's frustrating talking about him for so long. Like, let's go, man. Lace up. Let's go.
Alan Hahn
Everybody's waiting. They don't want to rush him back because he's been riddled with injuries. But you know what? I've also noticed, and we saw this even last year. In the playoffs, teams will target Josh Hart defensively. Like, they put Porzingis 74 on Hart. See, like, you got Towns because you're like, all right, well, Porzingis has to guard Towns, and Towns pulls Porzingis away from the paint. But that's not what they do, is they guard Towns with someone else and they put Porzingis on Hart. So Porzingis can help because, like they did last year in the playoffs, they're going to let Josh Hart beat them. They're going to say, go ahead, you hit three. See if you can beat us. And that is something that has worked against them. Let's continue. Javier in Queens.
Don Hahn
Hear that, Javier?
Alan Hahn
I worked on it.
Don Hahn
I nailed it.
Alan Hahn
You don't want it. You want to sound fancy? I'm not going to make you sound fancy anymore. That's it.
Peter Rosenberg
You know, I prefer my. The original pronunciation of my name, but. But, wow, Alan, thank you. I should play the numbers tonight.
Alan Hahn
This was a moment. This was a moment. You're right. I remembered.
Peter Rosenberg
I appreciate it. So listen, I got something for each of you. One Peter. Nerd alert. The Joker was filmed in the Bronx, but it is set in Gotham City.
Don Hahn
Okay, true. Yeah, you're right.
Alan Hahn
Nerd.
Don Hahn
Nerd.
Peter Rosenberg
Nerd alert for my man. Don't. I'm super impressed that you're such a big Roberta Flack fan. Rest in peace to Roberta Flack. And of course, rest in peace to Al Trotwig, a New York City like, God, like, staple. Like, Alan, you know, I'm a huge fan of yours, but, like, I grew up on Troutwig, Clyde and Marv. Like, they're like the soundtrack of my youth. So, you know, for the Knicks with you. So, Alan, this weekend was bad. They're having a good season, right? Don't put the bad weekend in front of the good season. They're playing well. And just two very quick points. And I like what you said about Mitch coming back and helping the defense get better on the perimeter. What I've been talking about all year is I think that this defense can go up another level and if they can, they'll be fine, especially on the perimeter. If they can't, they're in big trouble. And the other thing is I hate the callers that call in and say the Knicks couldn't, didn't keep Isaiah Hartenstein. And this is not that call. But to me, the main difference between this team and last year's is Hartenstein. Two years ago, no one knew who Hartenstein was.
Alan Hahn
Right.
Peter Rosenberg
He was a diamond in the rough. Right. The Knicks don't have a diamond in the rough this season. The closest thing is Miles McBride, but he's six, three, like he's not a seven footer. They're missing Hartenstein and they, I don't think they'll be able to really potentially replace that until next season. There's no, there's no answer for that. So because of that, that's the difference. But the Knicks have the potential to do even better than last year's team. Like if they had kept it all the same, like if Randle was here and DiVincenzo was here, there's no guarantee, I think that they would not be as good as this team right now, to be honest.
Alan Hahn
No, of course not. Again, they have the best record that they've had in 25 years. So yeah, 28 years. So you're right about that. The Hartenstein thing, I think we all knew when he ended up taking the more money that he should take. Remember, the Knicks by rule couldn't give him more. It wasn't that they didn't want to. They couldn't. A lot of fans don't understand. They wouldn't pay him. No, they paid him the most they could. Now the mistake was made when they first signed him. They probably should have given him a three year deal which would have allowed them to have a little more control. But at the time nobody knew who this guy was or what he could do.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, they were. So they were smart to get him two years ago, but had they done a three year deal, they would have been genius.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, but they didn't.
Peter Rosenberg
Like that's hindsight and Hardenstein has the potential to towards like the end of his contract. Oklahoma City might regret giving him as much money as they did. Like he completely outplayed his contract. So to me that he's the difference between the two teams. He is that good. But it's not the Knicks fault like that's the only thing. I hate calling him blame.
Alan Hahn
No, no, no. It just sucks that.
Peter Rosenberg
Good for him, though.
Alan Hahn
Good for him the minute he left. And thanks for the call. You just knew they were going to miss him and I don't know. Did we know they were going to miss him this much?
Don Hahn
No.
Alan Hahn
Pretty dramatic.

Don Hahn
Nets might make the play. The playing.
Alan Hahn
Playing. Yeah, right there. And the Sixers are going to like find a way to not make it right. Like. Like if you think about who they're dealing with, the problem is most Nets fans probably will tell you they don't want to make the plan. They want to have the lottery pick. So yeah, I mean, you're not going on a run, but Jordy Fernet is like hell with this. I'm. Well, I'm not losing.
Don Hahn
I get it. No, the Bulls have lost six in a row.
Alan Hahn
Yeah.
Don Hahn
And the Nets have won seven of their last 10. So they're very. Well, they're tied in the loss column. If Philadelphia is going to put Embiid to bed for the rest of the year and the Raptors are way out of it. It's possible, right?
Alan Hahn
Very. They should win tonight against the Wizards. Clearly.
Don Hahn
Wizards have nine wins.
Alan Hahn
Right. So at this stage.
Don Hahn
Listen, if you're. I understood what the logic was of the Tank early but if you're that close, you got to play in. It's not nothing if you're the Nets to be in a. In a play in.
Alan Hahn
Completely agree. Yeah. But for a lot of fans who love the whole idea of Tank blow it up, all that stuff, like I'm. I imagine there's some fans that don't want to see this happen, but. But it's happening, sweetheart. It's happening.

Alan Hahn
Richard in Manhattan. Hey, Richard, I.
Caller
Don. Peter Allen, Yankees. Better hope Clay Holmes doesn't turn into Isaiah Hartenstein Allen. The only basketball game I remember during the NCAA tournament. I know UConn won. I don't know who they beat. Every game was a blowout. The only game I remembered was game one Friday afternoon. Yale went and beat Auburn. I loved it. We better pray that Yale doesn't play St. John's in the first round game. They are good, so be careful, all right? The Knicks. They remind me of the 7172 Jack Ramsey led Buffalo Braves. McAdoo was a transformative player. First NBA center to dribble the ball outside. Outside shooting. He is Cat Go Herd is Anunabe and Ernie DiGregorio is Jalen Brunson. A great team to watch. That was transformative. They scored a hell of a lot of points but didn't make any noise. Never made any noise in the playoffs. Don, I got one for you.
Alan Hahn
Yes.
Caller
The worst decision hockey coach ever made Saturday. The worst. Carolina is down four nothing to Toronto third period. There's five minutes to go in the game. They scored three goals in two and a half minutes from seven and a half minutes to five minutes left in the game. Four to three, Carolinas down. All even strength. Goals, even strength. Three goals, two and a half minutes. What does the coach do two minutes later, right, Pulls the goalie and Toronto scores two goals. Makes no sense. You score three, go in two and a half minutes at full strength. Why pull your goalie for goal scoring? Fella's always impression. Thank you.
Don Hahn
We've done over this so many times and he doesn't want to hear it. So I don't even want anybody else out there that might be curious. All right. Two minutes left. You just scored three goals. All even, straight. If there's a face off in the offensive zone, you've got an opportunity to jump on it right away. If you wait for the perfect opportunity to pull the goaltender. What if. If you wait until the next stoppage or you're pinned in your own zone, all of a sudden there's 30 seconds left and go, why didn't I. It's all about the offensive draw. If you pull the goaltender with three minutes to go while you're coming out of your own zone, I get. Maybe that's too early. But if there's a. And again, I'd have to look back at the play by play. I didn't see that game was going up against the Rangers. If there's a face off Allen in the offensive zone, that's when you do it.
Alan Hahn
Yes, of course you do. Right. And the whole idea is to win the face off.
Don Hahn
He won't.
Alan Hahn
Problem is, if you lose the face off, the whole thing blows up. Because now you don't have possession. Possession's everything. So you take that chance. You hope you win the face off. And once you do, it's essentially a power play. Right? That's the whole idea. And then you get into your set and you try to get a good shot off. That's a risk. And you'd rather do that than just, you know, the other team can literally just play keep away, just dump it, chase it, dump it, chase it. And you never have to score. So it certainly does make sense.
Don Hahn
Can you imagine, like, Richard's a single guy. And you know why? Because if Richard had a relationship, Don, he would bring up the same argument every day. And you'd be like, but, honey, we've been over this. He just doesn't hear it. He has to repeat the same. It's incredible.
Alan Hahn
Well, if he doesn't get an answer he likes, he'll continue to ask the questions over, right? Over and over. Yeah, we know.
Don Hahn
Oh, dear God.
Caller
We certainly do the more physical stuff you do in your mouth. They're all good.
Peter Rosenberg
It is.
Alan Hahn
Oh, wow. So, guys, we have the combine is this week. How excited are we? We get to start talking about, like, you know, players in the draft and Cam Wardigan and Shador Sanders and the Giants and the Jets.
Don Hahn
And I did want to bring up Stafford today. We didn't get to Stafford today.
Alan Hahn
Stafford.
Don Hahn
There's some. There's people thinking he could be here.
Alan Hahn
They let him talk. We're going to see what kind of money he can get or he'll just stay in la. So that leaves a lot of meat on the bone for us to discuss this stuff and more tomorrow.
