Don Hahn
This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
Peter Rosenberg
That sounds like heaven to me.
Don Hahn
Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app, and your smart speakers.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, so the group chat's back. It's got a photo, new photo and everything. It's freshened up.
Unknown Speaker D
Let's see, uh, let's see what we got.
Peter Rosenberg
And, and we'll test it tonight during the Yankee game.
Unknown Speaker D
This will expire at some point, by the way.
Peter Rosenberg
February's not that long ago when you consider, like, that's like the. It was. It was right before trade deadline. And as you know, from February forward, from February to late June, early July, for me, I'm not really a human being. I'm just. I'm a. I'm a machine that just wakes up, goes to work, does 8 million jobs, and goes to bed for an hour and then starts and does it again. I am not human. So now that we're summer, we're back, White Flags back.
Unknown Speaker D
We're the off season, like, little side chick.
Peter Rosenberg
So I. No, I. Should we call it White Flag or Sessa? Because it definitely was Cessa. I don't.
Unknown Speaker D
I don't think Sessa was, like, the first version.
Peter Rosenberg
It wasn't Shreve. It was Shreve. I used to say, should just throw it. To say he should just throw it to the outfield, throw it up in the fence. Just throw it. Throw it into the right field. Bleaches. Because that's where it's going. I get so mad. It's so stupid, but it's funny.
Unknown Speaker D
So we'll have it for the Yankee.
Peter Rosenberg
Game tonight and for the rest of the season.
Unknown Speaker D
For the rest of.
Peter Rosenberg
But should we rename it? I mean, the flag's staying, but shouldn't we. We should definitely name it. All right.
Unknown Speaker D
I just. It just gave me such great entertainment.
Peter Rosenberg
That's funny.
Unknown Speaker D
And then it expired. It didn't expire once the Luka Doncic trade happened.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, once. Once. My season really got crazy after the trade deadline.
Unknown Speaker D
Which your season gets crazy. September, right? No, schedule comes.
Peter Rosenberg
It doesn't get really crazy until. Until February. Then it's just insane.
Unknown Speaker D
Oh, post.
Peter Rosenberg
Because February is when the get up stuff begins, the first take stuff, and it's just nonstop SportsCenter like that. Because they, they go from football, which we know it's going to be all football now, until the super bowl and then basketball sneaks its way back in.
Unknown Speaker D
Wait, why didn't I bring you on to talk any Jets? They don't value your JET opinion.
Peter Rosenberg
But I'm not a JET insider. Yeah, but you're a fan if I'm there. Greeny always has me sit in on Jet conversations. Always.
Unknown Speaker D
I'm fighting for your real estate.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm good. Trust me.
Unknown Speaker D
Oh, you're good.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, I'm. I'm very, very happy. I'm very happy. I have, I don't have no more. He's good now. No, no, I wish I could say that exactly.
Unknown Speaker D
I'm good.
Peter Rosenberg
When I said I'm good, I mean, I don't need anybody to fight for me. I am happy right where I am and I'm not going to complain about anything or make any demands. That's what I mean by I'm good. Like, I'm all set. Meanwhile, how about the Yankees tonight? Second game against the Rays. Can they show us some life? We know Aaron Judge again won't be in the lineup. So as we know, it's a 10 day stint on the IL. So Boone was asked before the game if the plan is to still activate judge off the IL after those 10 days.
Aaron Boone
I think that's the expectation. But we'll listen to the body and, and the trainers and him and see where we're at. But that's the hope.
Peter Rosenberg
That's the hope. And they'll have to see how he feels. And as I said, you know, you and I always used to joke about this. You know, those back spasms, whatever happened to those? You know, like in a season an injury doesn't ever really go away. All he has to do is take one swing of the bat. Like if they're saying he can't throw a ball right now, they're going to have him at dh. Probably so. But it still affects gripping the bat. Ty, if he takes one swing, one live swing in a game and suddenly feels tightness in his forearm, don't they shut him down?
Unknown Speaker D
And isn't he compromised?
Peter Rosenberg
He's too valuable to have him play through anything like this. It's a dangerous. It's a dangerous place.
Unknown Speaker F

Unknown Speaker D
Which by the way, I gave him a lot of credit for his toughness. I think Boone might have said this on the John Boyd, the interview he does that Judge wanted to go back out and play right field. So give him tremendous credit.
Peter Rosenberg
He's a leader.
Unknown Speaker D
What's the best case scenario? He's compromised.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh. Remember the Dodgers had to deal with this with Ohtani, but remember all he could do is dh. And that's sometimes that's what you got to live with.
Unknown Speaker D
Judge for a couple of weeks was not hitting.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Unknown Speaker D
And now you add the injury on top of it.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker D
And then he's a dh. But I'll tell you what, dominantly. So now Stanton goes to the bench.
Peter Rosenberg
Cal Raleigh just won the MVP by the way. He's got 41 home runs.
Unknown Speaker D
Well, he's the odds on favorite now.
Peter Rosenberg
And now that Judge because Judge felt like was going to be too hard, tough to beat. But at this point now he's going to win it. But there's the Judge part of this. But there's more because Giancarlo Stanton yesterday before the game was practicing in right field, you know, dragging flies and all that stuff. Right. That'll go well then he played yesterday dh. So he's not in the lineup tonight. And so he was asked what was Stanton okay?
Aaron Boone
Yeah, he's good. Just kind of looking at the next stretch of games, you know, four in a row now and night game, day game, the next two that I'll probably have them in both of those. So this was kind of the day for it.
Unknown Speaker D
Wait, hang on, hang on. Am I losing my mind?
Peter Rosenberg
What happened?
Unknown Speaker D
Didn't Stanton miss the start of the season because he was dealing with tennis elbows?
Peter Rosenberg
Elbows, yeah, plural.
Unknown Speaker D
So now we're going to put him in right field and have him throw.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. And run. Which never works out well. He's a great hitter and a great guy. But we know physically he looks like Adonis, but his body reacts like the Adonis statue. And that's a shame. It's sad, but it's true.
Unknown Speaker D
So the guy with tennis elbows is going to right field. The guy who's got a flexor strain is going to dh. But oh, by the way, we'll sometimes have issues gripping a bat.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, great. That's. That's what they have to do. So anyways, that's that situation on the Mets side of things. Last night was a tough loss. It was a walk off. It was a good game. It was not a good Start for Frankie Montas. But Carlos Mendoza got thrown out in the third inning arguing balls and strikes. Well, what he was doing was protecting Juan Soto, who looked at a ball that was way off the plate for both for strike two. And then watch strike three. That was a lot closer, but still sort of off the plate. Mendoza had had enough, and so he got tossed. I can't afford to whether he's Soto or any of our players, you know, like. And I knew from the very beginning after a couple of calls early in the game that I needed to be on top of it. And, you know, whether Soto or anybody on our roster, you know, I got to go out there and protect them. Now, that's what you do as a manager, protect your player. Now, next year, this will be all for naught because you could challenge that. I think it was the called strike two that rattled Soto. And, you know, he rarely wants to swing at strike three. And Don has a problem with this. And so he watched that next pitch that was also wide, but not nearly as. And he shouldn't have. Right? He shouldn't have. And that's on him. But anyways, Emil Jimenez was not good. Both sides were mad at him throughout this game.
Unknown Speaker D
It was. It was awful.
Peter Rosenberg
It was bad. Don't you feel like, though, that. That. That the. At least the ability to now challenge balls and strikes? I can't imagine you're ever going to get thrown out again for arguing balls and strikes, because how can you. You can challenge it.
Unknown Speaker D
So what's the rule? Like, do you get a certain amount of challenges.
Peter Rosenberg
Or is it as long as you get it right? Like, until you get it wrong, you can't possibly do it on every pitch.
Unknown Speaker D
Obviously, the maximum. Like, if, let's say you run out of challenges, then I would assume that there will be a point in the.
Peter Rosenberg
Game where it's on you. Then you challenge. Yeah, I think you should be able to have one. There should be a number per inning.
Unknown Speaker D
But now you're running the risk of, like, elongating the game.
Peter Rosenberg
They don't take that long. They're immediate. They're immediate. Like, how many are there in tennis? 2. 2 per game. 2 per game in major league, 2 per game feels like not enough.
Unknown Speaker D
Yeah. So you're still going to have managers getting you, Jack.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, that's a good point.
Unknown Speaker D
By the way, I got a Met stat for you.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay. I like it.
Unknown Speaker D
One of just two teams. I looked this up before the show. They're one of just two teams in the National League with winning records against teams above.500.
Peter Rosenberg
That's impressive.
Unknown Speaker D
And who's the other team? The Brewers.
Peter Rosenberg
Okay, that makes sense.
Unknown Speaker D
So obviously, being good against teams, great. But the reason why this matters more to me is because I keep saying. I kept saying this for weeks and I'm gonna pound this drum until the season ends. They have to win that division. They got to get a top two seed.
Peter Rosenberg
Agree.
Unknown Speaker D
Yeah. And you need to buy agree that bullpen. I know Stearns is going to make some moves.
Peter Rosenberg
He's got to improve it.
Unknown Speaker D
But with that rotation, I don't trust them given length. So you gotta. You gotta get a top two seat.
Peter Rosenberg

Peter Rosenberg
You didn't want to do it.
Unknown Speaker D
No, I was nervous.
Peter Rosenberg
Everybody else jumped in instead. Well, anyways, what we have coming up here is the Mets continue their series with the Padres in San Diego. The coverage immediately follows Pat O' Keefe on 880. And that starts at 9. So you get Pat O' Keefe from 7 to 9. The Yankees, they take on the Rays at 7:05 at the ballpark in the Boogie down. That's Tullamore. Do the original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Because when it's game time, it's. Come on, come on. Needed you there.
Unknown Speaker D
I can't do it.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, be sure to grab a Tullamore do or try the new Tullamore Dew. Honey, during today's action, I need practice. Maybe you need a Tullamore Dew. That'll get you going.
Unknown Speaker D
I need some practice.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, Glasses up. To enjoying a telemardu responsibly. Let's take. You know, the guy that agreed with you hung up. Yeah, but Jose in Brooklyn agreed with me. He stayed with us. Jose.
Unknown Speaker J
Hey, Ty Allen. Shout out to the company and I'll make this quick. I agreed with that. I do agree with Alan. I think that this is more of a rebuild. But I also do see where Ty is coming from because there is a. There's still a lot of that young talent. But kind of like what Alan said there was, you know, there was definitely a transition where a lot of the older veterans that were expected to kind of make the playoff run or that super bowl run are no longer a part of the picture. And when they're still. When you're instituting a new offense and a new defense, new and a new scheme and everything and looks like Aaron Glenn is doing everything to kind of prepare for that or. All I can hope for as a Jet fan is to kind of be competitive. It is. And still be in a favorable position. Be in a more favorable position for next year and see how everything else develops. Because we still got to see how these guys kind of perform now that they got their money. Because we all know that it's a different game. Game after you get paid. Thank you for your time, guys.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks, Jose. It's a. And Ty, I got to tell you, it is a different team. You want to go through it just so I can prove that I'm right.
Unknown Speaker D
A lot of the guys are the same. No, a lot of the guys we were excited about last year, let me tell you something, Are still on the.
Peter Rosenberg
Team, on the offense alone. Who's not there Anymore. Mike Williams? Not there. Tyron Smith? Not there. All right. Morgan Moses? Not there. Tyler. But they. This was the team. You just told me they didn't change.
Unknown Speaker D
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
These are all the guys. They're all veterans.
Unknown Speaker D
Yeah, but Tyron Smith and Mike Williams weren't there two years ago.
Peter Rosenberg
But they're.
Unknown Speaker D
The jets were also a Super bowl contender.
Peter Rosenberg
Two years ago was a different story. Two years ago, his team with the offensive line was not good enough. But the rest of that team did feel like a team that could have done something special until Aaron Rodgers blew out his Achilles. I'm talking about last year. This is why it's a rebuild, because you've literally rebuilt the starting groups. Ty Conklin was your tight end. He's not there. And obviously Rogers on the defense. Let's see. Javon Kinlaw. What a mistake that was.
Unknown Speaker D
Javon Kinlaw.
Peter Rosenberg
C.J. mosley. Not there.
Unknown Speaker D
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
D.J. reed. Not there. Chuck Clark. Not there. Tony Adams? Not there. Different team. Greg Zurline. Not there.
Unknown Speaker D
Yeah. We're gonna miss Greg. Greg the leg.
Peter Rosenberg
It's not a.
Unknown Speaker D
But I'm saying a lot.
Peter Rosenberg
You're so good. This is why you're so good. Because even when you're wrong, you find a way to belittle the right. Because you're like, yo, who wants him anyway? That's not the point. You're really good at changing the point. You know my point? It is that they rebuilt the team.
Unknown Speaker D
The foundation of the team that we were excited about is still there. It is on both sides of the ball. Yes. The Quinn and Williams and Will McDonald and Jermaine Johnson and Sherwood and Sauce Gardner.
Peter Rosenberg
You didn't know what he was going to do.
Unknown Speaker D
Will McDonald wasn't a rookie two years ago.
Peter Rosenberg
Two years ago.
Unknown Speaker D
Two years ago. I'm talking about last year.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, yeah, last year.
Unknown Speaker D
Yeah. Last year, what? Six weeks of the season, he was leading the league in sacks.
Peter Rosenberg
But Jermaine Johnson getting hurt right away. That was. That was. Nobody wanted to talk about how those guys are coming.
Unknown Speaker D
He's coming back.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker D
Okay, so I'm saying that there are a lot of pieces on this team that last year we were excited about. It's not a com. It's not a full rebuild. We're not, like, completely tearing it off.
Peter Rosenberg
All right, who do you. 30 seconds. Buying into who More this coming season, jets or Giants?
Unknown Speaker D
Oh, the Jets.
Peter Rosenberg
You're buying into the Jets.
Unknown Speaker D
Yeah. The Giants schedule is brutal.
Peter Rosenberg
The jets are in the afc, but.
Unknown Speaker D
The Giants are playing the Giant.
Peter Rosenberg
Schedule is. It's the hardest schedule in the league.
Unknown Speaker D
I mean they're playing the AFC West.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, it is difficult, but I feel like the Giant defense, like I'm not sleeping on them. It's early in training camp. I know we'll see the beginnings of it this weekend. We get a little bit of football, but still it's fun to talk about and we'll see by the end of the year which team ended up being better. But what really a standard is it until you can try to play for a Super Bowl. Let's see how the Yankees look tonight. Ty, this was fun.
Unknown Speaker D
I had a blast.
Peter Rosenberg
Later, brother.
Don Hahn
Thanks for listening to the Don Hahn and Rosenberg podcast.
