This is the Don Hahn and Rosenberg Podcast that sounds like heaven to me. Listen live weekday afternoon starting at 3 on 8 80, ESPN, the ESPN New York app and your smart speakers Don.
Peter Rosenberg
Hahn and Rosenberg take Level 7 and Pat O' Keefe lot to talk about. Mets Yankees 1-800-919-3776. Always a pleasure to talk to our buddy Danny on Long Island. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Danny?
Danny
Danny, Danny, who heard that song perform live at Madison Square Garden in 1984. We took, we took a limo in, me and eight guys. 1984, the album. Yeah, that was the last one with, with yes, David Lee Roth.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, that was quite a nice, quite.
Danny
A night for what I can remember of it. But yeah, those are the days. Just back from seven days of coordinating with my grandchildren in South Carolina and a similar moment in my life. God, I passed. I, I had a passing. I went from young grandfather. I was blessed to become a grandfather. 55, 54. So now it's 68 hours of water park, amusement park rides, roller coasters, lines, crying kids. I said to my son, you got it for the rest of the day. And I laid down in the lounge chair and I took a nap. I said, I tapped out. I tapped out.
Peter Rosenberg
I tapped out.
Alan Hahn
I said, isn't that the best thing about being a grandfather, is that you can do that?
Danny
I got to say, listen, they want to go on a couple more roller coasters. I'll be right here when you are done. But that water pool takes the hell out of you because you're just getting knocked around and it's, you know, it's just, it's just drained you after a day of being out in the sun and the roller coasters, which I don't really like, but I had to go on because the kid couldn't go on. Anyways, I'm down there. I'm enjoying the, you know, the Mets, obviously both our baseball teams are in a little state of stress at this point. But you know, you got to feel good about the Mets because at this point, the Mets win games when they're secondary Players the nemos of the world, the McNeil's. And McNeil's a solid, you know, player when they contribute. And that's I think what the Yankees aren't getting at this point. They got it to an extent, but it's always these solo runs like Wells and these guys. I'm just happy that's 1, 2 out of 3. I don't care if it was against the Yankees. Means nothing to me. There were two really good wins, especially Saturdays. Was a great game. Let's just, let's just finish up strong now. Enjoy the days off. Let's just reload, rearm. And I always think of like, you have to ignore how we got here and look where we are, look at the record, look where we're sitting. You have to be thrilled if you're a Met fan. I know you finished. You know, what do you think they were going to be 20 over 500 and then finish 30 over 500. There's always going to be a little low in the action, you know, the Yankees. You know what guys, you may just have to fight this one out. You know, not everybody gets to be Napoleon and defeats every army in front of them. You know, Napoleon had won a little. Maybe if the Yankees struggle all year and put a little magic together in October, it might actually mean something more that it was a struggle all the way through and you had some doubts and that makes it, you know, you know, what's Rudy for? Remember the year the Yankees, their ratings were down on television because they were winning 107 games and they're winning by 10 runs every game. So there was no drama involved. Baseball needs drama to be, to be, needs tight games. It needs pennant races. Otherwise, you know, it's not that it's a slow moving sport. I went to two minor league games while I was down there. It's, it's a, it's not football, it's baseball.
Alan Hahn
It's. Yeah, you gotta, it's gotta almost be in the background a lot of times during the regular season. Danny. I mean that's, that's, that's how you. Especially over a weekend.
Peter Rosenberg
But did. But that's not how New York operates. And we talked about it earlier in the season. If you're going to tell me that it's a long season, then what are we even talking about it for?
Alan Hahn
Now we go talk about NBA free agency.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's talk about the upcoming training camps for the football team.
Alan Hahn
Well, you got to watch every game.
Peter Rosenberg
We got to watch. You got to get a feel for your Team, you got to see it.
Alan Hahn
And that's why after 20 something.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hahn
Like when you start to see it go wrong, you know what you're looking at because you've been watching it.
Peter Rosenberg
You want to analyze it.
Alan Hahn
Here it comes again.
Peter Rosenberg
But no, but the. The panic. Strong. But to be concerned. Absolutely.
Alan Hahn
Every reason to be concerned.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's go to Rob Staten Island. You're on ESPN New York. What's.
Danny
Rob.
Peter Rosenberg
What's up, Rob?
Danny
Donnie. What's going on, man? I really just called to congratulate you. I met you at the holiday party this past year, the last episode of the Kay show, and I ran into you in the bathroom and you were super nice to me. You were nice enough to take a picture with me. And I had one minute to say something to you, and what I said to you was, I pray to God you get the job play by play for the Rangers because this is before they announced Kenny Albert and I'm a die hard Rangers fan and I know you were a die hard Devils fan growing up, but this, It's a dream come true for you and I'm super, super happy for you. But like, I really, really wanted you on play by play for TV for the Rangers. This had to be how Han felt when Soto signed with the Mets. What do you think?
Peter Rosenberg
Wow, that's. I don't know if he wants to go there. No, but I listen, I love doing the Rangers. And again, I did not know that I was going to be able to get this gig. And I was hoping, hey, more Ranger games. And Alex was brought in. Alex, Fausta does a tremendous job because he was going to fill in for Kenny because he had more TV experience because he had come over from the Los Angeles Kings. But this opened up and it was not something I was expecting, that's for sure.
Alan Hahn
Look at you leading the page on Barrett Media.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, see, that's a nice picture.
Alan Hahn
That's a better picture of you. Don Legrecke named lead play by play voice for the New Jersey Devils on MSG Networks.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm just. It's. It's. It's.
Alan Hahn
Does it feel real yet?
Peter Rosenberg
No. And, you know, but one good thing is that got plenty of time to prepare. It'll be a long time before we actually do a game, but no, no, it's. It's. It's a dream. This has been a fun show. Thank you for all the kind words from everybody.

Jimmy's in Montclair. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Jimmy?
Danny
Hey, guys, how's it going?
Peter Rosenberg
It's going.
Danny
I love it, man. I was jumping up and down when I heard the news. I'm a double season ticket holder. Section 16. Nice for 11. So I'll see you around over there. Welcome home. That's all I can say.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, thanks. That's what it feels like. You know, I guess that my first game was in 1987. Nancy had tickets, so we went to all the playoff games in 88. So all those Islander games and Capital games and Bruins games and all that, and, and just kind of fell in love with the team from there. So you're just so looking forward to it and just again, the legacy of all the people that have done it. Gary Thorne and Doc Emmerich, who is the best to ever do it. My opinion. And Steve Canelosi and Bill Spaulding, all great, great people. So, you know, a door opens, one door closes, the other door opens, the Rangers door closes. But this one opened up pretty cool. Looking forward to it. What else we got? How about. How about the Griftster? What happened to my. There it is. You're in Connecticut. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Griff?
Danny
Hey, how are you guys?
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you.
Danny
Congratulations, Doc. You're. You're Your mom and your wife, they must be so proud because they know how much you love the Devils and they know much it meant so to have the opportunity to call the Devils and to say that you're going to be the voice of the New York New Jersey Devils. How does that sound on it? Has it sunk in yet?
Alan Hahn
Right?
Peter Rosenberg
You know, it's, it's, it's something I dreamed of, like always to be a lead voice of a team. You know, as a kid, I mean, I'm calling baseball games off the tv. I used to always do that. I don't know if you ever did it, Alan, like, if nobody was home, you know, just like do the play by play. Like, I always was fascinated by that and watching like guys like, you know, Gary Thorne and Doc Emmerich to just follow that. And just when I would call the game, I would just kind of do it sometimes in my own head. Sometimes I would do it out loud if nobody was home. Like, no, it just, it's crazy. And as much as I love doing the Rangers, it wasn't my gig. You know, I'm just filling in. I'm filling in for Kenny. So And I. And I. There were times I did more games than Kenny because Kenny's a very busy person. I don't know if you ever noticed that. But for somebody to have faith in me like that, to do it, it's pretty cool. Very cool. Anthony in North Carolina. You're on ESPN New York. What's up, Anthony?
Danny
Hey, what's going on? Hey, Don. Congratulations, man. Someone that's in this field that's still young, it's an inspiration to see somebody that's as great as you are in your job finally get to the pinnacle, man. And I'm just. I'm heartbroken that I didn't get to meet you. When we went up this past year to see my first Ranger game, I reached out to you on social media, but I think I just reached out on the wrong platform or whatever because, you know, I didn't get a response. But really cool to see you get, you know, this. This opportunity. And I wanted to ask you one last Ranger question.
Peter Rosenberg
Go ahead.
Danny
So when it comes to the rebuild, how long do you think it's honestly going to take? You know, Mike Sullivan's a great coach, and I think that he came here to win and win pretty soon, but it feels like with where this roster's at, it's definitely going to take some time.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, we had Dave Maloney on last. I guess it was Thursday was before the holiday. And he talked about, you got Miller, you got Panarin, you've got Adam Fox, a former Norris Trophy winner. You've got Igor Shusturkin. There's no reason why this team can't compete for a playoff spot now. Are they going to win a cup? Are they going to win the division? Probably not. But can they be an 8 seed? Can they be a wild card team? Absolutely. So as far as the rebuild and Alan likes when I use the reimagination. Perfect, because that's kind of what it is. It's a little bit of a reset. They're not bringing it down to the core. They're thinking about the future, but I think they don't want it to come at the expense of the present. They're going to have a chance to win every game. And Jonathan Quick is no slouch as a backup either. He's going to, entering his third year with the Rangers, believe it or not. So there's enough there, of course, that they are going to, I think, be a competitive team, a fun team, just not a championship team. But you're right. You didn't hire Mike Sullivan to babysit for the next coach, he's eventually going to be around. They believe when this team turns the corner as far as how long, maybe it's a year, maybe it's two. But a playoff team, I think they could be a playoff team this year.
Alan Hahn
And you've seen in the NHL, look, a rebuild means you're going to be bad. And that doesn't seem like that's the case here, because they have too much talent to be bad. If you get the goaltending and if your defense is better than it was last year, which had better be, then you will find yourself competing for a playoff spot. And once you get in, as you know, matchups are everything, and so is goaltending. And those are two things. At least the goaltending part of it, you know, when you have Shusturkin, you always have a chance.
Peter Rosenberg
That's it. If you've got great goaltending, you got a chance. But again, is that going to be enough to beat out Carolina, the defending champions in the division? Probably not.
Alan Hahn
Is it enough that you could maybe win a series? Could you. Could you make a little noise? Could you be competitive enough that you're building towards something and you continue to tweak the roster until you get yourself back to a place where you feel good about what you have? Look, the Rangers had a little run. The window was there. It was good. But I still go back to the fact that when they had the number two and number one overall pick in consecutive drafts, they did not come away with a generational player.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Alan Hahn
And that, you got to admit, like, that really hurt them.
Peter Rosenberg
No, it did hurt them. Now, is there. Was there a general generational player in that draft?
Alan Hahn
No.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, listen, Jack Hughes went and then Coca went to. Yeah, you know, that's not the Rangers. That's not your fault right now. Could. Could Byfield end up being a better player than lafinier? Could Stutzlo end up being a better player? Yes, but are they Connor McDavid? Are they Steven Stamco?
Alan Hahn
And that's my point. Usually, Crosby, when you have. In any sport, when you have those, that level of draft, you generally find yourself, this is our next generation. This is the guy that takes us so we can move on from the older guys and we build around this next guy. And that just never happened for them.

Peter Rosenberg
Okay.
Alan Hahn
I, I will be interviewing the new coach. You. Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Love it. So what?
Alan Hahn
Yeah, I know, right? You think Mayhood they let this guy talk to him? Yeah. So yeah, no, no. So that it'll be live on MSG tomorrow 2:30. Our show starts at 3. So that's good. And then we'll have. And, and I am efforting seeing if we can get him on the show tomorrow if it's possible. That'd be great.
Peter Rosenberg
Make Michael jealous.
Alan Hahn
Why not? So, yeah. So it is officially official. Mike Brown was named the head coach. They put out the press Release. And tomorrow 2:30 on MSG is the introduction.

Alan Hahn
I thoroughly enjoy interviewing as you know. It's like a favorite thing of mine to do and I love doing it as a sideline reporter on MSG and, and the opportunity to do this with the new head coach. I have a million questions to ask him, of course. And it will be, you know, it'll be the first, first time you really hear from him. First time he's interviewed before he meets with the media. I think he'll also talk to all the beat writers, I believe so it'll be. We'll finally get to hear him say this is what I want to do with this team. This is what I think this team can be. Because everybody up until this point has wondered, all right, so now what they've moved on from Tibbs. What's the next coach going to do with this group?
Peter Rosenberg
And I'm looking forward to hearing that. And maybe we'll be able to get them on the show. And we'll have a Met Yankee games to preview. The mets have a635 start tomorrow in Baltimore, really weather permitting. And the Yankees start a series at home against the Mariners. So we'll be able to see Raleigh vs Judge.
Alan Hahn
As I said, now we can talk about him for the caller who said we should be talking about him now and he's in town. We'll talk about him now. Is he as good as Aaron Judge? Should he be an MVP candidate?
Peter Rosenberg
He should be Somebody had sent more.
Alan Hahn
Home runs already than he did in a whole season.
Peter Rosenberg
I know it's crazy, but, you know, they were putting the stats head to head. He does have a couple more RBI than. Than Judge. He's got what, two or three more home runs.
Alan Hahn
Does he get pitched around like Judge does, though?
Peter Rosenberg
He might. I don't know, but. And he's got like. He's batting like 100 points less than Judge. I think he's only batting like 268, something like. Like that. But he's a catcher. That's why I think he's going to get a lot of votes. If Seattle stays in the race and he ends up winning the home run title and maybe he finishes with more rbi.
Alan Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Even if his WAR is less and his batting average is less, you can make the case. Is it possible because he's a catcher, Alan, will he get some more votes? I think Judge is going to win it, but I think Raleigh will stay in contention even though some of the stats aren't the same because he's a catcher. And that's something that I think you're.
Alan Hahn
I do think you're right. I do think there might be some people that would just decide because of what he does as a catcher, the responsibilities, that maybe he's more worthy, especially if the numbers are. If his offensive numbers are comparable. They don't have to be better. They're comparable. Plus, you add him as a plus defender and a catcher that I could see a lot of people wanting to give the vote there. You know why, too? Judge is a repeat winner. There is some hesitation. They call it voter fatigue. There is a hesitation from some people that might want to say, okay, Judge is still great, but this guy's having a great season. It should be acknowledged. So we'll see. Yeah, he's got to keep it up.
Peter Rosenberg
Seattle's a good team. You know, they're. But they're only six games above.500. There's seven back of Houston, so the Yankees have a much better chance of winning their division than Seattle does. So I think the Yankees better team in that situation got to do some damn winning. They have to. Chauncey and Westwood, you're on espn New York. What's up, man?
Danny
Don, my man, just want to say congratulations. You know, not many people get to live out their dream and no one deserves it more than you. So congrats.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, thank you. I appreciate that. It's interesting calling. You're calling from Westwood. I mean, that's where it kind of started for me, following Hockey was at Fritz Dietzel's in Westwood, New Jersey. My dad drove the Zamboni.
Danny
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And I, and I. And I'd hang out there after and all the kids that would come to practice would come after the general skate and I'd get to see. That was like my first glimpse of hockey when I was like 10 years old and asking my dad, why are these kids showing up at like 11 o' clock at night? Escape. Because that was the only place that they can get any ice back in the, back in the mid-70s.
Alan Hahn
Still like that.
Peter Rosenberg
But so it's kind of, it's kind of interesting you're calling from Westwood because that's kind of where it all started for me with hockey.
Danny
Yeah. Every time you mention Prince Beetle, I always just appreciate how you pretty much grew up in the same area as me. I'm also a Jersey guy, so. But anyway, what I wanted to get both of you, both you guys opinion on this because Michael K. Mentioned on the Yankee broadcast and he mentioned it again about an hour ago when he was on this show. It was a game in Cincinnati, the ec. He said something like it's a complete joke how they're counting like the errors as hits for the, for the Cincinnati Reds.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Danny
And. But you know, every other sport, football, basketball, the defense blows the coverage, the points still count. So I never really wondered, I always wondered why errors just usually don't count as a hit. What do you guys think about that?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, because it's not a hit. I mean a touchdown is a touchdown no matter whether, whether the cornerback fell down. A basket's a basket, even if it's wide open. But is that if I hit it right to you, Allen, and you put it, you don't deserve it.
Alan Hahn
You should not deserve a hit. Quickly though, I, if we failed to mention this earlier, I wanted to mention it with Michael. Did you see this new rule in the NBA? Speaking of things that aren't. So I'm calling it the Mike Breen rule that when you take a heave that is beyond half.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh yeah, yeah. I saw this.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, yeah. If it goes in, it's a bucket. If you miss, it's not against you as a player. It's just a team field goal miss.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Alan Hahn
So it almost encourages more of those. You know, Mike Breen would always go crazy about players who, who would wait till after the buzzer and pretend the fake hustle shot because they don't want it to hurt their, their field goal percentage. Well, now it won't and you'll get to see more of these attempts. Is it a big part of the game? No, but what you like is that at the end of quarters you're still going to get somebody that makes a try and maybe we'll see more buzzer beaters. So it's just a cool rule, but it's one of those. Yeah, if you miss, it doesn't count either. So it's sort of the same thing.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, I want to thank everybody today for the congratulations and all that. I didn't want to take up as much time on the show as we did.
Alan Hahn
You deserve it.
Peter Rosenberg
I appreciate Al, I appreciate Michael and the powers that be to give me that opportunity because it is a dream come true. So we'll get back to the normal show tomorrow, but it was kind of cool. We had the press release today. Going to do some media tomorrow, so it'll still be, I guess a topic. But, but really just thanks to everybody for the outpouring of support and I'm looking forward to this play by play gig. So, Alan, thank you so much.
Alan Hahn
You, well deserve it. It is something that's exciting and now it makes us look forward to the hockey season even, even more.
