Jake found his song.
You're gonna like this, Jake, if you just let it. Not now, but when. Like you're going home. Listen to it. I loved this since I was a kid. Now it seems years. I'm back in the city where nothing is clear. This was Anthony last week. Weekend in New England. Lobster ice cream. Oh, everything's lobster. Rub some lobster on it is what they say. Yeah, I think you see Jacob's loving this. The Dirks, Bentley, Broken Branches, shores coming to PNC Bank Arts center on August 15th and Madison Square Garden on August 28th. ESPN New York has your chance to score tickets to the venue of your choice on ESPN New York's app. Just scroll down to contest and submit your entry. Brought to you by Live Nation. Tickets are on sale now@ticketmaster.com so they're playing basically home Dell, New Jersey on the 15th and then the Garden the 28th. What are they walking, like from. What are they doing for two weeks in New York? Some sort of a vacation or whatever.
Like hanging out in the city, doing some promos. Probably a couple of shows.
Yeah, maybe. That could be fun.
Right?
So we had a lot today. Mets are about to get two hit.
All right, where are we at in the game?
They're in the top of the ninth inning, down five, nothing. They have two hits.
No Soto. Anybody else sit out or is it just Soto? So they're going to get swept in this. And that's the west coast trips going to end.
Three and three even. Nimmo oh for three, Vientos one for three. Lindoro for three, Alonzo for three, McNeil zero for three. Alvarez over two with two strikeouts. Terence came in and then struck out. So the catchers collectively over three with three strikeouts. Mauricio one for three. Beatty over three. So two hits, one for Vientos and one for Mauricio. One out, top of the ninth inning. The Mets only two hits, losing five to nothing. Going to be swept in San Diego. So they already lost a game yesterday in the standings because Philadelphia beat Chicago and the. They're in the top of the fourth inning in Chicago. The White Sox are up one nothing on the Phillies. So we'll see if the Mets can catch a break there. As far as the standings are concerned, the Phillies hope that's with a half game lead on Philadelphia even in the lost column.
And Ken Rosenthal reporting, that was it. Johan Duran from the Twins, he's heading to Philadelphia. At least it's close to being done. That was one of the relievers that everybody's, they're all kind of like, it's four of five contenders in Major League Baseball. Everybody's looking for bullpen help because that's, everybody looks for bullpen help. And there's like about a pool of, I don't know, four, four names of significant relievers that you can get a get, you know, get your hands on. And, you know, that's one of them. Now, the Mets did get a reliever that should be significant, Tyler Rogers. And that's, you know, so they made one move at least. But look, the next 24 hours are going to be about like what teams make the moves that when we get to October, you say, boy, that was. Those were big pickups that had made a difference in a run to a World Series.
Well, that's the thing, is that I don't know if there's going to be a move that's going to be made between now and the deadline that's going to be what we like to call a needle mover. Like, all right, that team just won the championship, but we'll see because it might be a move that you don't think much about. And then it turns out to be the difference. Like maybe Tyler Rogers turns out to be the big difference in the Mets making a run in the postseason, you know, and certainly not something that people are freaking out about. As a matter of fact, most of the pundits say think the Mets gave up a lot to get Rogers. So we'll end up seeing at the end of the day. But the Mets are clearly in. They've got an owner who doesn't seem to care about the luxury threshold. He just wants to win, right? So he'll add payroll. What are the Yankees going to do between now? We're less than 24 hours away from the deadline. Should make the show very interesting tomorrow. Oh, yeah, Chauncey And Westwood, you're on ESPN New York. What's up, Chauncey?
Caller
So, guys, good show today.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you.
Caller
Yeah, no problem. So you guys are talking about Kyler and Taylor Rogers having different dominant hands. I actually got another set of twins. Keegan Murray of the Sacramento Kings and his brother Chris plays in Portland. Yeah. Chris Murray shoots lefty and Keegan Murray shoots righty. I always thought that was kind of like mirror twins.
Peter Rosenberg
Right? That's.
Caller
Yeah, they're identical.
Peter Rosenberg
That sounds. They could be, but I guess they could be mirroring each other as far as like some of those things because if you're identical, you would think they both have the same dominant hand. But maybe there is something to it, I guess.
Caller
Yeah, I thought it was funky. When I saw Chris get drafted a year later and then I saw him shooting lefty, I thought it didn't look right. But as for Volpe, I think, Alan, like you said, you don't want to bench him for one game. I say give him a, you know, give him a weekend. Because I don't think you should do it in the middle of a series either since it's, it's going to make him think it's a direct result of his errors from last night. But I think it's pretty clear it's, it's got to be mental because it started out as Volpe is struggling at the plate and that now he's letting that affect his defense. But now his hitting's picked up and the defense, that seems like a whole nother mental battle where it's. Anytime a ball is hit to him now he's like, oh God, I can't mess this up. He's totally in his head. So whether, you know, sending him out there every day, that approach isn't working. So whether he takes getting sat down as a punishment or as a break, take it however he wants, but I think that's the right move.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, we'll see.
Yeah. To me it's going to be about the results of tonight because last night after that game, the glassy eyed look that he had talking to the media, facing the music, understanding that he was going to be asked those questions, and the fact that it was in the first inning and then the ninth inning and almost given the game away, putting your team behind the eight ball, putting your starting pitcher behind the eight ball in the first inning, but then in the ninth inning, almost putting your team in jeopardy, that's, that's the kind of stuff that you, he knows is unacceptable. Right. But if, if they say no, we Got to stay with them. Just how to talk with them. Okay, great. If tonight goes clean and you just keep it moving. But if it's another little double clutch throw and another misstep and another bad throw. Like if it happens again, then what? Like I. That's why I just felt like off of last night. Felt like his game. He's not but the game is screaming for him to just take a breath, just take a break and we'll see you down in Miami. But they want to keep him in the lineup.
Mets go final lose five nothing. They were three hits in the game. And listen, not gonna get crazy. They won seven straight games but they just gave three of them back.
And Clay Holmes also not gonna good start. You're gonna find him in the bullpen.
Holmes went 3⅔, 8 hits, 4 runs. Only two were earned.
2 walks, 3 strikeouts, 8 hits though.
Don, you know so the Mets had to go four deep in their bullpen because homes only gave you three and two thirds. Mets do get the day off tomorrow as they fly back to take on San Francisco this weekend in San Francisco. Just traded Rogers away and last I checked they were. They were losing in the 10th inning. The Giants. The Giants are pretty much done now. They lost to the Pirates in 102 to 1. So they're out of it. So maybe the Mets can get back on track here at Citi Field. I'm not going to freak out. Go 33 on a West coast trip usually take it. But when you win the first three, you know it had a seven game winning streak to have it just get washed away. Last night was almost non competitive. We'll see if Soto is going to be in the lineup on Friday. That's going to be the big talking point moving forward. Didn't seem like Mendoza was overly concerned about it. Seems like there is a fighting chance he'll be in the lineup on Friday, but we'll see. You know this is a team that if anything inconsistent offensively and they certainly were today as they were completely shut down in that game against the Padres. As again it was not nobody Darvish shut them down. Darvish ended up going seven innings, two hits, seven strikeouts, no walks. But that was a guy that. His earn run average was like near seven at the start of the game. But he's Hugh Darvish. I guess you live with it.
But like think about the series like the first game was a classic. Was a battle right. Like you consider like this that was.
A. Yeah, Mauricio hit him run away in the ninth.
It's not like they got embarrassed in the series. I mean, again, this game today, not great. You were shut down offensively and your starting pitcher wasn't good enough.
You know, one run in the last two games. Yeah, that's not good either. You know, but the Padres are a good team. They're battling for playoff position. So the Mets and right, right now the Mets and the Phillies are tied for first place. And the Phillies are right now finishing up their series. And the Phillies have just scored two times in the top of the fourth and have taken a two to one lead on the White Sox. A little too early to scoreboard watch, I guess, but you know, once you hit the deadline and now you're in August.

You know what a name I saw that was interesting to me in some of the reports is Charlie Morton.
We've been around forever, long time now.
Again, his numbers aren't great, but you have seen him when in certain times he can dial it up. And Mets and Yankees both have inquired on him according to reports like because of the, the experience, the veteran, all that stuff. You know, he's, he has not had a ton of playoff. Like would that intrigue you if you wanted to add a starter? Would you rather add somebody like that? Or is he like kind of cooked and you don't want to be bothered?
I mean, he's on a bad team, right? He's on the Orioles.
Yeah, but he was supposed to be a difference maker for them and he is not.
He's 7 and 8 with a 5.42 earning average. But it was, it was 4.19 last year when he was on the Braves, also under.500, but he gave you 165 at the third. He's on his way to doing that this year again, his playoffs, because he's been around forever. He has appeared. He's 7 and 5 in the postseason.
He hasn't played a lot of playoff games. For a guy that's been in the.
League a lot, you know, his total innings in the postseason are 80.
Yeah.
So he was on that, the Tampa team. Right? He was on that, the 21 brave team that won the World Series. He was, he was on the Rays that went to the World Series in 2020.
Right.
So he's pitching a couple of World Series. In the World Series, he's 1 and 1, 17 innings pitched. So again, not a lot, but a little postseason Experience.
How old is he now?
He is 41. Would you. I mean, if I don't have to give up much. Yeah. Why? Why not? Right? I mean, as far as his contract is concerned, he's a free agent at the end of the year.
Yeah, he's going year to year, you.
Know, he's only $15 million and you're going to be getting him in the last, you know, couple of months of the season. So it's negligible as far as the money's concerned.
I always like looking for.
For.
In any sport. I like looking for guys that have that. Have that at one time were like one of the best. And you want to just see, can they just dial it up one more time? And would a move like this reinvigorate, refocus, re. Whatever it is, because you get him late in the year. He's been on a. They haven't been very good. Can you put him into a situation where his competitive juices flow and maybe he'd like, you know, he just finds it, even if it's just for a short period.
Well, think about this.
For the Mets, they need a starter.
His last five starts, he's three and one. In his last five starts, he has given you six plus in three, five plus in all of them. So he's, he's probably, you know, in the month of July, he's, he's been good, right?
I mean, Yankees could use him.
His last start against Toronto, which was last night, you know, six innings, eight hits, three runs. Time before that went six and two thirds against Cleveland, five hits, three runs. His last loss was against the Rays. He went five and a third, not good. Eight hits, seven runs. But against the Mets the other day, pitched into the sixth inning, picked up, pitched through six and he allowed four hits in one run. So you wouldn't take that down the stretch, right? I would, you know, if I can get a guy that could pitch me into the 70s starting right.
If you went, if you went Freed, Rodon and Morton would. Could you do worse? You could do like, if he. If you don't know what he'll give you because you have no idea. You're hoping he's going to come back in August. You give him a couple of weeks where he can, you know, you can build him up for a chance to, you know, to give you some innings. But you, but you don't know. You have no idea.
Not even the Mets just give you.
Another variety and you just like, I don't know, like I'm. What do you think?
No, I think both the Mets of the Yankees would kick the tires right? Montas hasn't been great. No I hasn't given you any length. Just give you another option. Again, it's negligible money wise. A free agent at the end of the year if I don't have to give up much. Why not?

Exactly like Santello. Exactly like rj. Everything all right? RJ on vacation. I didn't hear him today. I heard the great Ray Santiago on the Stuff youf miss.
Yes, he is on vacation. Good for him.
Another trip to Rochester.
I think this one's a stay home. Oh, good. Those are the best.
Believe me, the stress that I'm under. We're leaving to go down the shore. So the stress of packing. Of packing and prepping the house because somebody has to come and feed the cats and Nancy wants the house to look spectacular for them. And so we're cleaning a house that we're not going to be in for the next week.
They're not coming to entertain. They don't care what your house looks like. They're going to feed the cats and leave.
Who cares what people think, right?
But mind your business. Just feed the cats and go.
Well, Nancy's. It's. It's a lot. So there's a lot of stress. So it'll be nice once I finally do get down the shore. Always good to talk to Jonathan in la. You're on ESPN New York. How are you, Jonathan?
Hi, guys.
Caller
Hi, guys.
Peter Rosenberg
Who was that, your son?

That's my son.
Peter Rosenberg
I love it.
Caller
Yeah. My son. We are here.
Peter Rosenberg
It was so good to meet him.
Caller
We're about to go to baseball practice, but he's. First things first. You gotta call in the show.
Peter Rosenberg
There you go.
Caller
Hey, fellas. Hey, fellas. I really asked you a favor. Can you guys please get down to the net to the nail clipping thing? I'm really interested. I know I'm being nosy, but I'm like, I wonder who did that.
Peter Rosenberg
People are so interested in the nail clipping.
Well, I'm sure you've heard the three suspects are Bart Scott, Jake Aspen and Jordan Ron on I believe I heard.
Caller
It'S minus 500 in Vegas.
Peter Rosenberg
You're not making it. You're not making any money betting on him.
Caller
No, no, I'm just kidding. Fellas, really quick on Devin Williams. I'm not a big fan of him. I like another Clay Holmes in the ninth inning.
Peter Rosenberg
He.
Caller
He gets the deal done. But through a good little, you know, heart attack that we go through, I want to ask you guys, what do you guys think about trading? Devin Williams gets a best package deal out there. Get that package, add a few pieces more and go for Mason Miller. What do you guys think about that?
Great show.
As always, fellas.
Peter Rosenberg
Thanks a lot. Jonathan.
It's a lot to do in 24 hours, right?
I gotta. I gotta look at the stats.
He has leveled off, but there was.
A lot of talk about him early in the season.
Oh yeah, he didn't look comfortable.
He's a kid. He's young.
But remember, he's walking too.
Oh yeah. Well, so is Williams.
Well, everybody is. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
It's Williams again. I don't understand these teams like Oakland AAS.
Right.
You've got a kid who is 24 years old, not even 25 yet you have him under control until his arbitration, which will not be until the end of next year. And what do you. That's a guy you want to try to keep me trying to cultivate something. Eventually you're going to move somewhere. Say it's Vegas. You want to be able to put together a team that could be successful once you get to wherever you're going. Aren't aren't those the players that you want to cultivate instead of, you know, first of all they would use. Would Devin Williams be to them he's walking at the end of the year as well.
No use whatsoever.
You know, I guess you'd have to give up some prospects that maybe they can sink their teeth into.
But I don't see it.
Isn't that somebody.
No. Yeah, of course.
Unless you're saying arbitration is going to kill us and we can't afford to pay him what he's going to do.
Or unless you're saying that teams are desperate for bullpen help and we could get a couple of prospects for us that you know, that can help build.
Up what we're trying to do here. But I would think Mason Miller is a prospect, right? Where?
Well, I mean like, you know, in the field.
Yeah, but, but I get it. But I just think that some point you want to cultivate these guys and keep them. But listen, if he's available and clearly that are all the rumors that he is.
Yeah, they're just naming names at this point.
Listen, Devin Williams is getting the job done here. It's a high wire act, but so is everybody outside of Mariano Rivera. Right.
So is tomorrow. Is tomorrow for us a sort of like must? Listen. Because every single trade that might go like this, the trade deadline, like when we did the NBA one, it's like anytime something happens, we do the alert, we tell you what it is and we kind of give you a little. Yeah, a little like synopsis and especially Mets and Yankees if they do any. I mean, you expect the Yankees are going to do.
It's not just what the Mets and Yankees do. What do the Phillies do?
Yeah.
Blue Jays. Yankees should be paying attention to the Red Sox and the Rangers and you know, I think it's going to be a fun day. The deadline is at 6, but there's always a little spillage outside of 6. So tomorrow's show is going to be a lot of fun. So it's be very fluid tomorrow. We've got the, the Thursday rewrite.
Yes.
So but we'll be all over the deadline which again is coming up in just 23 hours. So enjoy the Yankees tonight. We will talk to you again coming up at 3 o'. Clock. Should be a lot of fun as we get closer and closer to the trade deadline. This was Don Hahn and Rosenberg. Enjoy the rest of your night here on ESPN New York.

Podcast Summary: Don, Hahn & Rosenberg – Hour 4: Mets Shutout
Release Date: July 30, 2025
In the fourth hour of the "Don, Hahn & Rosenberg" podcast, hosts Don La Greca, Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg delve deep into the New York Mets' recent performance, player evaluations, and the looming trade deadline. This episode offers a comprehensive analysis for both avid fans and casual listeners interested in the intricate dynamics of the Mets' season.
The episode kicks off with Peter Rosenberg summarizing the Mets' disheartening performance in their latest game:
Peter Rosenberg [02:08]: "So the Mets are clearly in. They've got an owner who doesn't seem to care about the luxury threshold. He just wants to win, right? So he'll add payroll."
He provides a detailed breakdown of the game's statistics, highlighting the Mets' struggles:
Top of the Ninth Inning: The Mets were trailing five to nothing with only two hits, one by Vientos and another by Mauricio.
Pitching Performance: Clay Holmes' outing was subpar, resulting in an 8-hit, 4-run performance over 3⅔ innings.
Team Standings: The Mets are facing a potential sweep in San Diego, impacting their position in the standings as the Phillies close the gap.
The discussion transitions to individual player performances and potential trades as the trade deadline approaches:
Peter Rosenberg [13:00]: "He's on the Orioles. Yeah, but he was supposed to be a difference maker for them and he is not."
Devin Williams vs. Clay Holmes: Rosenberg expresses a preference for Holmes in the bullpen over Williams, citing reliability despite Williams' high walk rates.
Charlie Morton’s Potential Move: The hosts debate the viability of trading Charlie Morton, a seasoned pitcher with postseason experience but inconsistent recent performances.
Peter Rosenberg [14:23]: "So he's pitching a couple of World Series. In the World Series, he's 1 and 1, 17 innings pitched."
They weigh Morton's veteran presence against his recent statistics, considering whether his experience could be a "needle mover" for a playoff push.
Listeners call in with thoughts on team strategies and player dynamics:
Caller [05:46]: "But I think it's pretty clear it's got to be mental because it started out as Volpe is struggling at the plate and that now he's letting that affect his defense."
Peter Rosenberg [22:20]: "Devin Williams is getting the job done here. It's a high wire act, but so is everybody outside of Mariano Rivera."
As the trade deadline approaches, the hosts speculate on possible moves by key teams:
Peter Rosenberg [23:16]: "The deadline is at 6, but there's always a little spillage outside of 6. So tomorrow's show is going to be a lot of fun."
They anticipate actions from not only the Mets and Yankees but also the Phillies, Blue Jays, Red Sox, and Rangers, emphasizing the fluid nature of trade discussions in the final hours.
Mets' Struggles: The team faces defensive and offensive inconsistencies, highlighted by recent poor pitching performances and low hit counts.
Bullpen Concerns: Questions loom over the effectiveness of key relievers like Devin Williams and Clay Holmes, with potential trades on the horizon.
Trade Deadline Dynamics: The impending deadline is set to stir significant moves, with teams evaluating veteran experience against the cultivation of young talent.
Mental Health Impact: Player performance is not just physical but also mental, with discussions pointing to the need for rest and support for struggling players.
Peter Rosenberg [02:08]: "The Mets are clearly in. They've got an owner who doesn't seem to care about the luxury threshold. He just wants to win, right? So he'll add payroll."
Caller [05:46]: "I think it's pretty clear it's got to be mental because it started out as Volpe is struggling at the plate and that now he's letting that affect his defense."
Peter Rosenberg [23:16]: "The deadline is at 6, but there's always a little spillage outside of 6. So tomorrow's show is going to be a lot of fun."
Conclusion
In this episode, Don, Hahn & Rosenberg provide an in-depth look at the New York Mets' current season challenges, player performances, and the strategic maneuvers likely as the trade deadline nears. Their analysis offers valuable insights into the team's prospects and the broader MLB landscape, making it a must-listen for fans keen on understanding the intricacies of the game and team management.
