So game time brought to you by Telemore due the original triple distilled, triple blended, triple cast matured Irish whiskey. Be sure to grab a Telemore do or try the new Telemore Dew. Honey, during tonight's action, glasses up to enjoying Telemore Dew responsibly. Three points separate the Islanders and Rangers in the standings. Don, am I correct with that?
Don Hahn
That is right. The Rangers have 60 points, the Islanders have 57.
Peter Rosenberg
And so I know that both teams aren't exactly tearing up the league this year. There's not that same sense that we've had in the past with either one of these teams. But when they face each other, it's always an event and it generally seems to have a little more juice to it when they come out to the island because you'll get a 5050 crowd at UBS. You'll get a lot of Ranger fans You'll get your Islander fans. And there always does seem to be a little bit different kind of buzz. Is it safe to say though that this is a big game? I say it and I kind of cringe because I know again, the Rangers have been mostly a disappointment this year. The Islanders have underachieved, they have not really been very good, but still, they're both in shouting distance of a playoff spot. And these two points, as we get closer to the playoffs, every single one becomes critical. Not to be a cliche, but when they play each other, there's already, already something on the line, which is the pride stuff. But now you got two points that both teams desperately need.
Don Hahn
Yeah, desperately need. And what the Rangers have done. Seven. Oh, and three. That run that they had where they had a point in the standards and 10 straight games, they followed it up going 4 and 5 with a minus 9 goal differential in that span. And oh, by the way, in the four wins they had, they trailed in the third. So they really haven't put together a 60 minute effort really since that run. Islander, same thing. They had a seven game winning streak. That put them right back into the conversation. Well, since then they're one and three and they've won. They've lost three in a row. The thing with the Islanders, that baffles me as I was preparing for this game, they're 31st on the kiln, they're 32nd on the power play. Their special teams are huge. I mean you, you're not going anywhere with that, right? The only thing that keeps them in the conversation is Sorokin. But you don't have Barzell. You're so banged up offensively, you don't get anything out of your special teams at all. How am I supposed to believe that they can sustain what they're going to need to do to make up this five point gap and get back into the playoff race? I'd love, especially two games with the Capitals coming. It's not going to happen. I'd love to see the Rangers have a much better chance, Peter, just because of that fact that their special teams for the Islanders are just so.
Caller
I'd love to know the worst combined special team rankings of a team that won the whole thing. Because I'll tell you that 63, when you add that up, that number is not what you're looking for.
Don Hahn
I mean, that's expansion team numbers, really. Honestly, that's just. It's. And then listen. And there's injury, you know, Barzell was a really difficult loss for them, no question. About it. But you still have Horvat, you still have Lee. There's. There's guys that should be able to produce better than they are now.
Peter Rosenberg
The P. To be fair, I believe the penalty kill over the last stretch. I mean again, I know they took the break for four nations, but Patrick wa did have the penalty kill playing better. But you can't make up for the. How awful it was earlier in the season to really start climbing.
Don Hahn
No, it's been better.
Peter Rosenberg
But you're right about, about the power play. They can't really score. They have a hard time keeping up with any team that has a high powered offense. They do compete though. Like, I know that sounds like a real cop out. It's real. They are a team that early in the season they blow leads like crazy in the third period, which was maddening and that really, that's what sunk them. But they do like night in, night out, whoever they play. I mean they played a really good Dallas team recently. I was watching that game and they, they get after they can be in all that stuff. Like they'll give you a fight. So one way or another. I mean I, I think I know your answer. When I ask you if one of these teams is going to get a last playoff spot, if it's going to catch him. I'm guessing you're going to say the Rangers have a better chance at it, right?
Don Hahn
Well, just because again they're, they're a little closer because the Islanders have a game in hand. So the Islanders win a regulation tonight. They're, they're, they're right there, just a point back of the Rangers and these teams have two more games they've got to play this year too, so. But really the Islanders are chasing the Senators and the Red Wings. They got to get past the Rangers, but there's bigger fish to fry here. But they got to get, they got to get points and they got jobbed. I thought against Dallas on that five minute major on Suzikis that led to two goals that killed them and they ended up by one.
Peter Rosenberg
Why didn't they go to Toronto for that? Why? I didn't know they can make that decision there.
Don Hahn
Watching videos, I didn't realize that either. I. Arthur Stable did a great job explaining it. And for people who don't know, a five minute major is subject to review if the officials that called it decide they want to go to review and they. Toronto. It was out of Toronto's hands. It was totally there. They never went to review because the officials didn't want to go Check. I don't know why you wouldn't want to check. I thought he hit him in the chest. It was a bad call. It leads to two goals. You're down four, two going to the third. They also had a goal disallowed in the third that would have tied the game because the goaltender interfering. Things are not going their way. But I wish that they. Like every five minute major we saw with Rempe the other night, they went to review, they took the. They made the five and made it a two minute penalty. That changed the complexion of the game. But you're so right. They've blew so many leads. They've lost seven games in overtime of the shootout right there. If you cut that in half, they're probably in the playoffs. So I just don't think until. Until they just get healthier. They're well coached and they try and they're. They. They really do put an effort. It's just not good enough. But Sorokin is the great equalizer. If he can get on a toot here, maybe there's a chance. But we'll see what happens tonight. As far as the Rangers, Kreider is going to be a game time decision. They called up Othman, they called up Jones. We'll see how that kind of gets things going. We'll see if he gets a chance to play. Because of the injury to Kreider, neither of these goaltenders do well really head to head. It seems like Sorokin does get the little bit of a better of it. But they're good friends, they're really close. And I think this can really be a tremendous rivalry. If we can get both of these teams to be good at the same time, how amazing would that be? It just. It's been such a long time, but I think it would be a mistake for them to buy at the deadline. They really don't have much to sell, so I would probably just kind of keep it the way it is. I think Lou will probably do that. If Lou thinks he's got a chance, he'll go for it. I can't imagine he thinks this team has that much of a chance to mortgage any kind of future for just some kind of a run. And March 7th is the deadline, so we'll see how, how busy that'll be. But no, it should be fun. Whenever these guys get together, it's something special. They haven't played each other in a long time. But way back in the beginning of the season was the Garden first meeting here at the U UBS and three meetings in the final 25 games for these teams. So very, very important. Two points tonight for the loser of this game. It's going to sting.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
It'll be four in a row for the Islanders. And if the Rangers lose then now 1 and 2 coming out of the break. A loss in regulation would be really tough for whoever had suffered it.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, it would feel like the first nail. If the Islanders lose this game in regulation, it would feel like it. I know it's. It's ridiculous because we're not even March, but you know when it just starts to become insurmountable with the injuries that you're talking about. They are trying to get more guys back, but I don't think we're going to see Barzell back. So, like, you just, you know, like this. This is. These are critical two points. Now, Don, you and I both grew up with this. I know you were more on the devil side of things back in the day. I've tried to tell people how special this rivalry was at a time and how it still has sizzle, even like today, like you said, like, you'll walk in the building tonight and it'll just. It'll feel like. It'll feel like a big game. Even though it's two teams that aren't even in the playoffs, it still has that. That still exists. Even everything that they've all been through, and you said it, we're trying to get to a place where they're both good at the same time. It's been so long, like, they haven't even played each other in the playoffs.
Don Hahn
It's since 94.
Peter Rosenberg
It just doesn't make sense. And even that was a terrible series because they've had really great series and epic history, and we just can't get them to play against each other in a playoff series. Peter, I know you only know it through what you've heard, so it sounds really old and dated, but I can't tell you how when these two teams played in the playoffs against each other, and from 70, from 75, which I was a toddler, but from 75 to 84, I'm talking like these series were knockdown, drag out, and it was like. Like you would defy. You were dividing families. You were divided. It was not to this level, but close. It was Yankees, Dodgers, Brooklyn Dodgers. Well, it really was that.
Caller
I mean, enough so that it's kept some juice this much later. I mean, there's still juice there. In spite of the fact that recently there's not any real nothing for Juice.
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Don Hahn
And the Devils, I think, have taken over it just because they've played the most recent playoff series. They played in the conference final in 2012. But still, to a certain age, that rivalry. Although I will say this, Alan, I just thought about this. I didn't. Haven't thought about it in years. But just going back in my mind's eye, Susan, that I. I can't tell you the last time I heard the Pop End Sucks chant.
Peter Rosenberg
Come on.
Don Hahn
I have not heard. I don't. I cannot remember the last time I've heard of the Garden. It would be a standard. You'd be at the Garden at some point, somebody would whistle and then you'd hear it every single game. I cannot remember, you know, how often I'm in that building.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
You know, and calling it. Sometimes it's hard when I got the headsets on. But I'm doing pre and post. I'm sitting there, you know, right on the bridge level.
Peter Rosenberg
Right.
Don Hahn
Of everything. I can't. Did you hear it the night you were there?
Peter Rosenberg
No.
Don Hahn
No. You would always hear it. Now you don't hear. Because there's a generation of fans that don't remember that moment, you know, and because it's such a long time ago. And again, 1994, they met in the first round of the playoffs. Rangers swept them in four. It was a non competitive series.
Peter Rosenberg
It was actually. They swept him in three because Hextall.
Don Hahn
Was the goaltender for the Islanders. Was not great.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, my God.
Don Hahn
And that's it. That's the closest we've come. But yet there is something when they get. And you're right, because at the Garden it's different. But at ubs, the Ranger fans will get in the building. Maybe you'll hear the chant. But I'd be curious to know if I'm wet on this, but tell me if you're a Ranger fan, that goes to the Garden. The last time you heard the Pop Van Sucks chant. There was a time, no matter how bad the Rangers were, no matter how out of it they were at some point during the course of the game. And you'd hear it at NICK games. You'd hear it at the circus, like any time you'd hear it at Billy Joel. But honestly, Allen, I don't remember the last time I heard it.
Peter Rosenberg
That's crazy. I never even thought of that. I mean, the chicken dance thing that they used to do at the Coliseum was always funny, too.
Don Hahn
Yeah, because of Flurry?
Peter Rosenberg
Well, no.
Don Hahn
Well, Flurry was. That's. That's when he.
Peter Rosenberg
He yeah, well, he's the one who would do that. But they would play the song and you know how they would end the song, right?
Don Hahn
Yeah, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Like the Ranger suck. It was just, it's hysterical. But that's just part of it. Like the whole Santa, the whole Santa thing they did where it was Christmas, anybody wearing a Santa outfit could come on the ice during intermission. And so you had like this parade of Santas. They thought this would be this really cute thing. And how'd it go? Well, three guys decided they were going to wear Rangers jerseys underneath their scent outfits and on the ice opened up their Santa outfits to reveal the jerseys and, and instead of everybody just going like, boo. Other Santas on the ice started pummeling them and it turned into a brawl that actually happened.
Don Hahn
Yeah, hilarious.
Peter Rosenberg
But that's the, that's what you like. It was fun. That's how much passion was put into this thing. So, you know, I mean, there's, there is something on the line tonight, even though it's still relatively early. And I'm just curious to see what kind of atmosphere we get, what kind of effort you get from both sides and you know, do we get a good game here? Because I'm gonna be locked in.
Don Hahn
No, it's gonna be good.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm in on it.
Don Hahn
So it's gonna be a, a fun game. CB2 says he went to the Rangers Hurricanes game on January 28th and he definitely heard it.
Peter Rosenberg
All right. Still.
Don Hahn
So I, I, it was something that I, I will say this. I'm sure it does happen, but it's not nearly as noticeable as it used to be when, when I would, when I would go to games, when I first started doing it back in, in 05 and even going as a fan before that, it's not the, it's not at the same level. How could it be? I mean, that was 40 something years ago. That happened.
Peter Rosenberg
Great. Dennis Podman. Richard in Manhattan though, wants to discuss. Yes, Richard.
Richard
Hi, don. Peter. Allen. Allen. 50 years ago today, the two acquisitions for the Islanders that started their ascent for the next 10 years, JP Parisi and Jude Drew to the Islanders. And that's what they were just as important as getting Butch Goring and the two greatest series I've ever seen in hockey. Playoff series, Rangers Flyers 74.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Richard
When they're, when they embellish Flyers embellish their Broad Street Police. Following year Rangers. Well, island is two series. They came back 30 against Pittsburgh and beat Pittsburgh 4 3. Came back 3030 against Philly and lost 7 those were two great series. Fellas. Did any of you guys catch the Joe Frazier documentary on Saturday night?
Caller
No. Where was.
Richard
Fantastic. I learned so much about Frazier. The big thing I learned, first of all, Frazier was a very good looking guy. So I'm sure Ali started all of that just to generate a business. He was a very good looking. But what happened with Frazier after he won that fight, the first one at the Garden with Ali? He was never the same. He never trained the same. He started that dance review with the two women and he did all. He never trained his weight was. He never. He was heavier. When he fought Ali twice, half day, got murdered by Foreman, was never the same. And that's why I think he took it personally whenever Ali would call him all the names and this and that. I think in the back of his mind he knew he wasn't the same fighter. Don, this is for you. The three greatest threesomes I've ever heard in New York City sports broadcasting. My favorites, of course, Lindsey, Bob and Ralph Kiner. Second, I go with Scooter, Bill and Frank Messer. And third, Don McGregor, Kenny Albert and Dave Maloney. You guys are great. Don, on Saturday's game, is it now standard? They played a Canadian national anthem in Buffalo.
Don Hahn
Yeah. Because it's so close to the border. Yeah. They didn't play it in Pittsburgh. Excuse me.
Richard
They didn't play the Canadian anthem in the Pittsburgh game. They were ranging. Pittsburgh game.
Don Hahn
No, they just do it in Buffalo.
Richard
They do it in Buffalo. Answer me this.
Don Hahn
All right.
Richard
All the great states around here, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island. We only have one school in the top 35 in men and in women, AP. And that's St. John's with all the great schools, universities that play college basketball in those five states. That's almost impossible. What is the decline up here? Why don't we play basketball up here anymore?
Peter Rosenberg
Weather.
Don Hahn
Yeah. I think people. I think the great basketball players want to go west.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hanson
All right.
Richard
This is my last one. I'm going to clear this up. How great? Well, first of all, tonight. What a night. Tonight. Forget about it. And then we got Luca, and I'm.
Peter Rosenberg
Trying to get these guys fired up for Luca versus the.
Richard
But listen to this. This is what I'm praying for. This is what I'm in. Four months from today, or I should say three months. Three months from today, the Western Conference NBA finals. Luca and LeBron versus Jimmy versus Steph. That's.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, I would pay thousands for that, esp.
Richard
I want to see the old guys dominate again. I would love it.
Peter Rosenberg
Love it. That's what I'm going to tell you for that.
Richard
Always a pleasure.
Peter Rosenberg
Thank you, Richard. Do you guys think that Richard has us on mute?
Caller
It's.
Don Hahn
It's.
Peter Rosenberg
He can't really hear us.
Caller
Like, he just cannot. It's. By the way, I wanted to ask Richard, but we can't get a word in edgewise. I wanted to say Richard. I want to say, Richard, did you enjoy. I kind of would like a drop of Don attempting to respond to Richard. That was so good. But I would like to say he.
Peter Rosenberg
Touched on how great he is and.
Don Hahn
Then he won't let him respond.
Caller
But Richard, I do want to ask, did you enjoy the spring training games on Sunday? Were they everything your heart desired? I want to know. Because he was so excited for those games.
Don Hahn
He is such a gem. And the reason he's a gem is that he doesn't have us on mute. He just doesn't care what we have to say.
Peter Rosenberg
Just steamrolls right through us. I love it.
Don Hahn
He makes mute moot.
Alan Hanson
Now.
Caller
Mute.
Don Hahn
His moot.
Peter Rosenberg
Mute is moot. Mute is moot. That's. That'd be our first album, boys. Yeah, that'll be our first album. Well, let's keep going with the calls. Well, shall we? Stephen is in Melville. Stephen.
Alan Hanson
Oh, how appropriate to follow Richard.
Caller
Oh, our guy. Is this our guy?
Alan Hanson
This is Stephen from Melville.
Don Hahn
Oh, yeah.
Alan Hanson
Sane Richard.
Caller
The same Richard. It's saying Richard, guys, that is.
Alan Hanson
But that is. That's my connection to him and that his. His knowledge of sports is mind boggling.
Caller
It is crazy.
Alan Hanson
It's incredible. And I was thinking too, as I was listening to him, I was saying to myself, this guy's a gem. So it was so funny to go, John just goes, he's a gem.
Don Hahn
He is.
Alan Hanson
But I was thinking, he's awesome.
Don Hahn
His sports knowledge is only outmatched by his complete inability to communicate with the.
Caller
Other as a normal human being.
Peter Rosenberg
I wonder if he knows more about dentistry or if he knows more about sports.
Evan Roberts
No.
Caller
Come on.
Alan Hanson
Oh, that's a good one. That's a good one. Before I go out, make my main point a question I want to. I was like, does everyone realize that you were talking about Matt Rempe and Mitchell Robinson?
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Alan Hanson
I was like, oh, they're both misses. Is that common knowledge? Is mice just like behind the time?
Peter Rosenberg
You know, I didn't even. Didn't even consider that. No, didn't even consider it, by the way.
Caller
Wow. I didn't.
Peter Rosenberg
I don't know if Matt Remby's out tonight, but I know Mitchell Robinson is out tomorrow already. Already ready.
Don Hahn
That means he probably. That's gonna be four, right?
Alan Hanson
So the reason I called is I've been curious about why. Why it makes you guys so angry when. When someone curses on the radio. If there's a dump button. And before you answer, I want to say that what I'm thinking, imagining is that someone curses. And the producer, maybe it's Anthony, is like, he's just like hanging out, having a bagel or something. And all of a sudden someone curses and he's like scrambling to like, put on to like, listen to. He's like, oh my God, there's the delay. So you gotta be like, I gotta. I gotta find the exact moment that he curses.
Don Hahn
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Peter Rosenberg
That's not really how it goes.
Don Hahn
I just don't. I don't want a chunk of the show to be missing to our audience because some yo yo can't control himself. That's why I just get aggravated with it. I mean, can't we talk like human beings? We got to swear and then dump it and lose 20 seconds of the show.
Caller
And also, not every curse is equal. Like, there are some people where it slips out and you go, oh, I get it. And then there are times when they're just being completely careless.
Don Hahn
And most of the aggravation guys, comes with we. Whether we debate whether it should have been dumped or not.
Peter Rosenberg
Don, hasn't you told me the story about a host we used to have that would. If he got like a really bad caller, would curse him out and just keep hitting the dump button.
Don Hahn
It was one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen. It was magical.
Alan Hanson
It was.
Don Hahn
Bob Washoesen Baba shoes is working the overnight of the fan. I don't know if you've heard the story, Peter. All right. And a guy, you know, mother blanked them on the air.
Caller
Okay.
Don Hahn
And Bob responded by destroying him and then just casually hit the dumb button and went to the next call. It was brilliant. Like most. What made it brilliant is, is that, yeah, if you tell me that's happening, I can easily just hit a button. But usually when somebody swears at you, you know, your reaction is, I get rid of him, dump it or whatever. But for him to have the wherewithal and the presence to be able to destroy him back and then with the perfect timing, I believe on a just a six second delay, not 20.
Peter Rosenberg
Wow.
Don Hahn
To seamlessly then dump it to where. The only people that heard it were us in the newsroom. And the caller is is absolute brilliant. It might be better than anything he's ever done.
Peter Rosenberg
And wow I feel about him. That's a statement. Now the caller must have just like because now you're floored because you thought you got over on him and you never expected it. He was going to just drop one right back at you. The problem is though is we should reveal the people that the dump button doesn't work on the stream.
Don Hahn
Right. But this was like a stream just where water ran in a creek.
Caller
And also when we used to get angry on the case show, the curses got through on TV also.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes.
Don Hahn
Until they finally did. I think eventually late in the in the process we're able to dump it. So a lot of it did make it through. But really it was just so brilliant of Bob.
Peter Rosenberg
And I just thought I remember that I'm glad you told the story because I remember hearing it. I know you the one that told it so that's amazing. Again see the the the just adding to the lore of Bob Wishuzle, somebody that I know. I don't know him that well but I'm such a huge fan of his now. Even more Last caller crew coming up and more 800-919-3776 Don, you got something.

Catch the show on demand whenever you want. Just subscribe to us wherever you get your podcasts. I'm trying to get you guys into this game later on tonight after Islanders, Rangers when we have Mavericks at Lakers, which means Luca facing his former team. Maybe this, maybe this will will pique your interest. Jordan Brand, which Luca is part of, just put out a new spot. It's a guy squatting in front of a sports car and he's doing something with the license plate. The song All My Exes Live in Texas is playing.
Caller
That's pretty good.
Peter Rosenberg
It's Luca getting up now from squatting in front of the sports car, revealing a California license plate that says 77 and he walks away. And then it says full tank. No mercy. The over under for him tonight if you wanted to play it is 32 and a half points. You taking the over or under?
Don Hahn
I'll take the over. It's what is it?
Caller
It's 32 and a half.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. You think he goes full petty. You think LeBron's like, Bud, shoot 40 times? I don't care.
Caller
I think.
Don Hahn
I.
Caller
Yes, yes. I think that will be the attempt. The question is, is he in the. In the best game shape to do it?
Peter Rosenberg
But I think just had 32 against.
Caller
Denver, so why not, right? So I think he goes ham. What time's that tip?
Peter Rosenberg
Peter Rosenberg, hardwood pick of the night.
Caller
Oh, that's. That's interesting. Applying some pressure here.
Peter Rosenberg
You went hardwood now.
Caller
This vehicle is a 10 o'clock.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, TNT.
Caller
A 10 o'clock TNT vehicle minus nine and a half. The Lakers at home. I'll tell you what, I don't love the Lakers at nine and a half, but I love Luka at the over. Make it that hardwood, baby. Lay it right on the wood. I might even stay up and watch some of this.
Peter Rosenberg
I'm trying to get you guys into this game. See, a lot of things can happen. It could be a blowout early and he doesn't play a ton, which means he doesn't hit it it. But I can't see it. Jj, Leave him out there and say, go ahead. Go ahead, Bud. Make him, make him feel it. I just, I'm really curious. I think when they. Because they're going to be in Dallas. I think it's in April. That's when he, he returns. The prodigal son returns. You know, conflicted. That crowd's going to be. I mean they're, they're still holding protests outside that, that arena. It's crazy. Wow. I would love a series between the Lakers and the maps.
Caller
Well, tonight's really the tone setter of like what that could look like.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, there's no Anthony Davis. I think Kyrie still banged up. Like they're not complete. They don't have gaffer, they don't have live.
Caller
When is Davis back?
Peter Rosenberg
It says indefinitely. Yeah, they're talking about weeks, so he's still a couple of weeks away.
Caller
I love, I love massive trades. When you give up your huge franchise star and the guy you get can't even be available. That always makes the fans happy.
Peter Rosenberg
That is painful. There's no doubt. 800 now a night 3776. You know, Jonathan in LA was actually asking for exactly what you just did. Peter.
Alan Hanson
Hi, guys. Guys, it feels so good to talk back to you guys. Peter, I messaged you on what happened to my daughter and guess what, my guy, she's. She's gonna be discharged from the hospital on Thursday. I'm so happy. And just to let you know, you guys, what I hear all these callers calling in that you guys helped me while I was in chemo or whatever. Well, let me tell you something, guys. While I was waiting for the doctor for these hard, hard news, you guys always wear my ear and always put a smile on my face, even. Even though I was going through these hard times, man. And I thank you guys so much and God bless you guys. And yes, and I was calling. I was actually gonna call for some hardwood. Peter. And what you said it, I guess. Luca over and. Oh, one more thing. My son Don. My son has a favorite drop. Is it okay, which one? Go. Which one? Cut his fat ass.
Peter Rosenberg
Yes. Yes.
Alan Hanson
Thank you, guys. I love you guys.
Peter Rosenberg
All right.
Don Hahn
His fat ass.
Caller
Oh, man. Now, now Jonathan's kid one may replace replaced that.
Don Hahn
Oh, I got to hear that back.
Caller
That was fantastic.
Peter Rosenberg
We're gonna need that on the page as soon as possible.
Caller
So. By the way, man, I'm so happy for Jonathan. He had DM me over the weekend, and he was. His wife gave birth to their second child, and there were some pretty scary, scary moments there in the first several days. So the fact that all is well, thank God. So happy for him.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah, that. That's definitely good to know. Let's continue with calls. Last call crew happening right here with us. Arsenio in the car. Arsenio, how are you?
Caller
Good.
Don Hahn
How are you?
Alan Hanson
Good, good, good. So I got out of work, and I finally was able to listen to the press conference for moves and for Ellen Aaron Glenn. And honestly, once again, I hate to be this guy, but it left me, like, just frustrated. Like, I am already beyond frustrated with this resin, with this regime, and it's only been a month.
Peter Rosenberg
What are you frustrated with?
Alan Hanson
I'm frustrated. I'm already with the Rogers move, especially the way they answered the questions today. Like, how is this the first move you make? And then you're. You're so dismissive of. Of to answer any questions about it. But he was the best option at QB that you could have had this year if you wanted to win. Tyrod Taylor isn't the move the rookie. If that hits, that's like hitting gold. That's like you hit the lottery, but that's not. It doesn't happen that way. And then to hear the way they were speaking, especially Aaron Glenn, I'm. I'm excited for the player being a next jet and. But so far, I'm hearing a lot of, like, the same Robert Salah all fluff, a lot of. All gas, no break. Like it's hyping me up. But the first move you make wasn't the right move.
Don Hahn
Well, we'll see if it's right or not. I'd like to see. I'm not going to grade it until I find out what their pivot is, but I can understand you saying, boy, I'm hearing a lot of, we want winners here, and you let somebody that's got, you know, a Super bowl ring out the door.
Peter Rosenberg
Now, some people saw it Don as addition by subtraction because it just could. They wanted to get him out of here. They didn't want a guy who hovered over the franchise the way Rogers did. I, you know, whether it's right or wrong, fair or unfair, it just. That's what it was. They wanted a fresh start and to just get out of the business of Aaron Rodgers. But now you're right, because that. That's a fateful decision until you come up with who the next guy is, whether it's somebody you're going to draft and Mel Kuiper has them taken, Shador Sanders at 7, or if they go in some other direction. And like I said, I mean, if Matthew Stafford's available, we keep talking Giants. Why wouldn't the jets kick tires on that?
Don Hahn
No, I think they should do whatever they got to do, but I. I'm not going to decide whether it was right or wrong with Rodgers until I see what their pivot is so right. I can understand fans going, I. Why didn't we bring them back? And I still believe in my heart that a lot of the reason they didn't bring him back is it would put undue pressure on Aaron Glenn to succeed immediately.
Peter Rosenberg
So that means then Stafford would be the same type of signal, wouldn't it?
Don Hahn
It would be.
Peter Rosenberg
So drafting a quarterback is probably the most. Or, you know, a Justin Fields kind.
Don Hahn
Of, you know, a bridge guy. You bring somebody where the expectations are not going to be, like, through. There'll be expectations if they draft Sanders, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it'll be expectations of, you know, go out there and win 10 games.
Peter Rosenberg
But don't forget, he said we're here to win. Now, he. That's what. That's what Glenn said. We're playing. We want to win.
Don Hahn
Now, I'm not going to say it's an act, because I don't think it is, but I just think it's part of the Persona they're trying to set out there. You're you know, it's. You've been losers for a long time, so you don't want to. You're not going to pump a fan base up by saying we're going to be average, you know, or be patient with us kids, you know, we're going to get there at some point.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah.
Don Hahn
You know, but I'm a little dubious to believe that, like what is winning look like? Is it go out there and win 10 games? Well, bring back Aaron Rodgers does stir up a lot of emotions in people that maybe, just maybe we might be able to make the playoffs and make a run. And I don't know if you want to put that kind of expectations on a guy that's a head coach for the first time ever.
Peter Rosenberg
Let's take Dave in the car. What's up, Dave?
Richard
Hey.
Alan Hanson
Hey. How's it going?
Don Hahn
I don't think talking about Hollanders, Rangers.
Alan Hanson
Over here, I don't think that these.
Don Hahn
Are like, I'm a massive Islander fan.
Alan Hanson
I don't think these Islander fans realize how big of a game this is, this game. Allen, I don't know if you know, but you know the Islander fans you've been telling, we've been telling Lou, sell, sell, sell. You know, he goes out, we get, move here again, move there. We're ready to roll. If we lose this game, we're three points behind the Rangers right now. We lose this game, we now are.
Richard
Five and it's not looking good.
Don Hahn
And we got about buying the Rangers behind, you know, the Detroit. No, yeah, yeah, exactly.
Peter Rosenberg
Like I said, this is the first nail. I think it's a first nail. I know it's too early, but it's not too early. This could be a first nail. You lose this game.
Alan Hanson
Yeah, but, but Alan, with the trade deadline coming up by like next week.
Peter Rosenberg
I mean, you want to sell, we.
Alan Hanson
Have to win this game in order if we're thinking of anything. Because Lou, if we're going to try to make the playoffs, like as you said, this is the first step. We have to win tonight.
Don Hahn
I just don't know what there is to sell and I'm not trying to disrespect the roster. I'm just. I don't know.
Peter Rosenberg
Brock Nelson.
Don Hahn
Yeah, I guess, yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
Dobson, I would move, I'm telling you, I, I'd move on from Dobson, but.
Don Hahn
I don't think it's anything earth shattering that you're going to get necessarily in return. I do think though, the Islanders and Devils are in a different situation than the Rangers. Like the Rangers can Send out the letter and say we're going to rebuild. The Islanders still see value in keeping this thing going as long as they can and try to fill that building and maybe, just maybe sneak into the playoffs. Right. That where maybe another team might appearance. All right, let's get out of here. It doesn't, you know, we're not going to make it and if we do, we're going to be out right away. I still think Lou and Ledecky and Mal can see value in a best of seven series with Washington or Toronto, even if they were to get swept. Hey, it's two home gates. I don't think the Islanders want to be in the business of missing the playoffs. Now. I don't think Lou's going to buy to make it happen, but he might look like, yeah, I might be able to get something for Dobbs, I might be able to get something for Nelson, but do I see value in still sending out a perception we're still alive, still trying to make these last few home games meaningful? They probably see value in that.
Peter Rosenberg
I. That has been, I think the problem with the franchise for many years is a lot of times that's what it's only been about. Like just show face, right? Save face, you know, you know, the token appearance, you know, a couple years ago when they were making the runs to the Final Fours, they actually had something brewing and something building and then, oh yeah, that's as close as they've been in years, but that's it.
Don Hahn
I don't, I've talked about this on the podcast. I respect Washington. I don't think they're going out in the first round, but we've seen President's Trophy winners get bounced in the first round. We saw Tampa get swept by Columbus a few years ago. Right. So hockey is the one sport and with Sorokin and his ability to dominate a game or a series, they're going to take that chance and say, maybe we can force a Game 7 against Washington, get a third home gate, maybe shock the world and beat them. Yeah, we're not winning a cup, but believe me, a franchise like that, like Devils and other, other franchises that are not, not that the New York is a non traditional hockey market, but you know what I'm saying, Like Columbus, Columbus, after everything that they went through with losing Johnny Goudreau, they're gonna see, let's make the playoffs, let's make something happen. Where in other years they might say, ah, listen, let's have the slow burn. But there's some times where you Just you feel like I'm gonna try to go for it, and you never know. And I think in certain markets that that certainly is the case. I think the Islanders are in that market.
Peter Rosenberg
We're gonna. I'm curious to see again. I'm looking forward to seeing the atmosphere tonight in the building because fans always give you the temperature. They'll let you know. And how passionate is everybody into this game who is into this game versus the. The first team that starts to struggle, the groans begin instead of it, you know, like both franchise, both fan bases are definitely going through that right now. So will it be more groans or more of like, that fervor between the two? That's what I want to see in this game tonight.
Don Hahn
It's. It's hard to go there with 24 games left after tonight for the Rangers And I think 25 for the Islanders. But you can make the case if somebody loses a regulation tonight that it's. Yeah, I can't say it's over, but boy, does it. It's going to feel like it. It's going to feel like it. Of course, the way these two teams are playing right now, a fourth straight loss for the Islanders, dipping, you're gonna. You're gonna walk out of UBS with a regulation loss feeling like we're cooked. Rangers maybe a little less because they're a little closer and they did make the milk move for J.T. miller and. But it's gonna feel like, God, it doesn't feel like it's our year.
Peter Rosenberg
If you go into the game tonight, we want to hear from you.
Don Hahn

You know Peter, right?
Caller
Nope.
Don Hahn
I guess we just got him an acoustic version.
Peter Rosenberg
But yeah, apparently Sad eyes.
Don Hahn
Maybe.
Peter Rosenberg
There it is.
Don Hahn
No, Peter, No. That's one of the biggest songs of the 70s.
Peter Rosenberg
Your parents are definitely playing this song.
Don Hahn
79. It might have been a hit. Might have been in the top 40.
Caller
When I was born.
Don Hahn
Well, you were. Yeah. Because you were born in July. It was actually in October, but you know, you were. You're rolling around on the rug listening to this song and not knowing it.
Caller
I got news for you, don't know the song. Never heard of the artist.
Peter Rosenberg
Oh, wow. Born in Brooklyn.
Caller
Yeah, I'm seeing that right now.
Peter Rosenberg
Brooklyn Zone.
Caller
A year older than my dad.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, you need to know this song. It's a good song.
Don Hahn
No, it is a very good.
Peter Rosenberg
Sounded nice. If you're a one hit wonder, you still had a hit. I. I still think you should get respect. So.
Don Hahn
I mean, at least on the day you die.
Peter Rosenberg
Well, especially on the death. If any time. Especially on the day you die.
Caller
Wow.
Peter Rosenberg
Apparently he also covered the Lion Sleeps Tonight.
Don Hahn
Yes.
Peter Rosenberg
Wow. Did not remember that.
Caller
That song. I know though, at least.
Peter Rosenberg
Yeah. Okay. Revenge game tonight should be interesting. That could be a good top five, right?
Don Hahn
So what's the tip?
Peter Rosenberg
The best revenge games ever. First game back against your former team and you just absolutely kill it.
Don Hahn
Saquon would be up there, right?
Peter Rosenberg
You think he could be in the conversation? I mean, when Bronnie. Yeah, when Braun went to Cleveland like that, he was the villain and he just wore the villain mask as well as anybody could in that whole moment. And that place was.
Caller
But that can't. Is that. Can that be considered revenge, though?
Peter Rosenberg
What do you mean? He left. They were booing him mercilessly. They were burning his jersey. He walked in the building and said, I'm still the king.
Caller
I mean, it's not typical revenge because it's like revenge to revenge. But I hear what you're saying. Either way, it's the same Motivation.
Peter Rosenberg
You're right. I guess they didn't leave, they didn't give up on him.
Caller
He left, gave up on them. They were pissed. And then he wanted revenge and then he still killed. But Alan, give me a, give me a moment on Diana Tausi, all time basketball greatness.
Peter Rosenberg
You're, you're reading my mind. That was, I was going to close the show with that. Yes. You're talking about, to me, in my opinion, the best to ever do it. Right? I mean, could you, you can't. I don't know if you can argue that. I think she's the best to ever do it. The most decorated player in, in women's basketball history, won everything, gold medals.
Don Hahn
Would be national championships.
Peter Rosenberg
What's that?
Don Hahn
I said who else would be? I agree with you. I, I, Caitlin Clark hasn't gotten to that point yet.
Peter Rosenberg
No, no, no, no. Not as far as the accomplishments of what she's done. I mean, I, I think Sue Bird comes very close.
Don Hahn
Okay.
Peter Rosenberg
Because again, you talk about winning it at every level, you know, wnba, gold medals, you know, national championships and all that stuff. But I mean, Tarazi's like, like the standard when it comes to point guards, when it comes to team leaders, when it comes to winners. That's just what she is. So, you know, that is, yeah, It's. Was she 40, right? She played last year at 40, right?
Caller
Yeah.
Peter Rosenberg
And there was a lot made of that because we're seeing more and more athletes playing again. Aaron Rodgers just did it. LeBron's doing it right now at his extremely high level, but you don't hear it a lot about, you know, female athletes. And you know, she did it and was still playing a high level and you know, it's, it's just a regard that I think it was due and I was like I said I was going to close the show with it and just mention it, you know, on the way out, but yeah, it's just like I just, when I hear that name or when anybody ever asks what's the greatest women's player ever? I was just go right to that Diana Terazzi and everything that she's accomplished in her career. But the reason why I was doing the, the top five thing and the idea of, of revenge games and we'll watch tonight if there is one for real with Luca and maybe that'll spur something for us to think about tomorrow because it is Wednesday. Griffin in Connecticut had a top five idea.
Alan Hanson
Hey, guys. So we know a vector is going to break the record eventually. The top five records that will that will probably not be broken.
Peter Rosenberg
I would say consecutive games played.
Don Hahn
Yeah. That feels like especially.
Peter Rosenberg
Nobody's touching Cal Ripken. Nobody.
Alan Hanson
Oh my God.
Don Hahn
The one that never gets brought up because it's kind of, it's not, it's not fake. It's real, but nobody ever thinks about it. Is Johnny Vandermeer's record of back to back no hitters. In order to break that, you'd have to pitch three no hitters in a row. Who's ever doing that?
Peter Rosenberg
Good point.
Alan Hanson
I know that's before, before you guys let me go.
Peter Rosenberg
Don, with the trade deadline coming up.
Alan Hanson
What do the Capitals have to do to go all in? Because they have a chance to win it. And for a vaccine to get another ring, what do they have to do?
Don Hahn
I don't, I'm watching them play and I watched a lot of them this weekend. I don't really see too much of a weakness. Maybe maybe a little bit more depth on the blue line, but other than that, you seem set. You've got two legit goaltenders. You've, you can roll four lines. I, I, they look stacked to me. I don't want to jinx anything for you, man, but I've been talking about it with Anthony on the podcast. The jump that they've made from a team barely making the playoffs. And Ovechkin looked like he was cooked to this being them and Winnipeg back and forth as the two best teams in the NHL. Do you see the lead that they have in the Metropolitan division, Alan? Like a 12 point lead or. It's, it's, it's incredible. But I always err on the side of defensemen tend to get hurt. And you wouldn't mind maybe having an extra one here, but I, I don't, I don't. A need does not jump to mind to me at all.
Peter Rosenberg
Game is convict, by the way. You can get anywhere you get your podcast on the list.
Caller
Look at that.
Don Hahn
That's ice chips, which I would get from the other guy.
Peter Rosenberg
See, he called it ice chips. Can I just toss this out before we call it a day? When we took, remember we saw the unbreakable records thing, the one that came to mind that I actually now think like, maybe we'll do it like this. What we used to think were unbreakable records that might now be broken.
Don Hahn
I love that topic.
Peter Rosenberg
100 points that wilt Chamberlain scored. I do think that's in play.
Don Hahn
I've been saying that. Right.
Caller
You know that me and Don have had that fight many times.
Peter Rosenberg
Don believes it.
Caller
You don't believes it. I don't.
Don Hahn
I think there's going to be a 200 point game too. A team will score.
Peter Rosenberg
Like I said, I I do think dramatic changes to the game. It'll be fun to talk about that. What list do we have for you tomorrow? Stay tuned. Have a good night everybody. Thanks for listening to the Don Han and Rosenberg podcast. I don't want to know how this sausage is made, man. I just want to know. It's good. Hear more of Don Allen and Peter.

Summary of Don, Hahn & Rosenberg Podcast Episode: Hour 4: NYR-NYI & Luka
Released February 26, 2025
In this episode of the "Don, Hahn & Rosenberg" podcast, the hosts—Don La Greca, Alan Hahn, and Peter Rosenberg—delve deep into the upcoming New York Rangers (NYR) versus New York Islanders (NYI) game. They analyze the current standings, team performances, historical rivalries, and the broader implications for the NHL playoffs. Additionally, the hosts engage with listener calls, sharing personal stories and insights on various sports topics beyond hockey.
The Rangers and Islanders are neck-and-neck in the standings, making their upcoming clash at UBS crucial for their playoff aspirations. Don Hahn confirms the current points: "The Rangers have 60 points, the Islanders have 57." (02:00). Both teams are vying for those essential playoff points, heightening the stakes of this matchup.
Peter Rosenberg highlights the underwhelming performances of both teams this season but emphasizes the intensified rivalry when they face off: "When they face each other, it's always an event and it generally seems to have a little more juice to it." (02:05).
Don Hahn critiques the Islanders' performance, pointing out significant injuries and weak offensive capabilities: "I'd love to see the Rangers have a much better chance, Peter, just because of that fact that their special teams for the Islanders are just so." (04:26).
The Islanders struggle notably in special teams, ranking 32nd on the power play: "Their special teams are huge... But you don't have Barzell. You're so banged up offensively, you don't get anything out of your special teams at all." (03:29). Rosenberg underscores the detrimental effect of poor special teams on playoff chances: "The only thing that keeps them in the conversation is Sorokin." (03:29).
The hosts reminisce about the storied rivalry between the Rangers and Islanders, recalling intense playoff series from the '70s and '80s: "These series were knockdown, drag out, and it was like you were dividing families." (09:59). Don Hahn laments the decline in rivalry intensity in recent years: "I cannot remember the last time I've heard [the 'Pop Van Sucks' chant]." (12:22).
Both hosts agree that the upcoming game is pivotal. Don Hahn predicts dire consequences for the losing team: "A loss in regulation would be really tough for whoever had suffered it." (08:54). Peter Rosenberg echoes this sentiment, referring to it as "the first nail" in the coffin for playoff hopes: "If the Islanders lose this game in regulation, it would feel like it." (08:54).
The episode features several listener calls, bringing personal anecdotes and broader sports discussions to the forefront.
Richard's Nostalgia (15:04): Richard reflects on past sports triumphs and the impact of figures like Joe Frazier, highlighting his decline post-championship: "Frazier was never the same. He never trained the same." This segues into a broader discussion on legendary sports broadcasts.
Alan Hanson's Personal Story (31:10): Alan shares heartfelt news about his daughter's discharge from the hospital, expressing gratitude towards the hosts for their support during challenging times: "While I was waiting for the doctor for these hard, hard news, you guys always wear my ear and always put a smile on my face."

How is this the first move you make?" (32:22). The discussion centers on the implications of trading a franchise quarterback and the future direction of the team.
Peter Rosenberg discusses Luka Doncic's potential performance in a game against his former team, the Dallas Mavericks: "The over under for him tonight... 32 and a half points. You taking the over or under?" (27:31). This segues into a broader conversation about Luka's impact and future in the NBA.
The hosts celebrate the illustrious career of Diana Taurasi, deeming her the greatest in women's basketball history: "She's the most decorated player in women's basketball history... That's what she is." (44:23). They commend her achievements and longevity in the sport.
