Take you up until 7 o' clock and then Ty Butler till 9. Mets Mariners coverage will kick off then. He's been good to us all year and looking forward to what he has to say about the Knicks and the Spurs. He's Tim Legler. He joins us here on Don Allen Rosenberg, how are you sir?
Tim Legler
I'm great, great. I'm great. Just arriving in San Antonio, Texas. Man, I'm really excited about, about game one on Wednesday night.
Rosenberg
You know what I want everybody to understand, Legs doing this for us means the world because it is a travel day for all of the media. Right. Because tomorrow's media day and the fact that he just, everybody is, he just got off the plane and agreed to do this. So. And I know you've got a lot going on for you guys.
Tim Legler
Yeah, of course, of course, of course. Actually in the car headed to the hotel as we speak.
Rosenberg
Perfect. So this, this matchup like I've, because I'm close enough to it since the, since when my entered the league. I don't know how much you've watched these two teams play against each other. Legs, you're in for it. This every game they play each other going back two seasons, three seasons, something crazy or epic happens from like Brunson having 61 and WEMBY going 4020 to like mamish get a villi hitting 7 for 7 from 3 or champagne going 11 of 17 or bridges going for 41 on Christmas Day. Like there's and then the NBA cup game, the knicks ending their 11 game winning streak back in March. Like it's unreal the games these two teams have played each other in the last three years.
Tim Legler
Yeah, that's very true. All of that. That's a great recap of some of the craziness that's going on between these two teams. But I think that no point has the anticipation been greater than now because of the way the Knicks are playing. Currently playing And I think go back a couple months. I think there was a narrative kind of out there that whoever won the west was the foregone conclusion, was your NBA champion. And I think at the time Denver was even kind of in the mix there too. People were even including them because no one saw a team in the east at the top as separating themselves from the other teams in the east or certainly playing on that level that was worthy of giving one of these teams that came out of the west legit run for their money. And all that changed with the Knicks. The Knicks changed the narrative because going into the playoffs, you looked at those top four teams kind of looked like and what I think all of them are capable of beating each other. That's kind of what it felt like to me. And you go back to down to one against Atlanta and the way that series flipped on its head and the way they have played since, they've completely changed the narrative over the last month. There now is a team that has made it to the NBA Finals that is more than worthy of facing whoever was going to come out of the West. And so even though they've had great matchups and they've had some guys go off on given nights in the past since Wemby came into the league, nothing compares to this because of, of the way the Knicks have transformed themselves into just as juggernaut Buzzsaw. Offensively going up against this team, the physicality on the perimeter, defensively funneling everything to this unique rim protector. It is going to be fun and I am blessed and honored. I have the best seat in the house.
Alan Hahn
And you look at the conference final and three bad games by Wemby, three losses, you know, four great games win. Is that just the formula? Is there a world where Wemby can go off and the Knicks can still win?
Tim Legler
That makes it, that makes it all really, really difficult. Not what's going to say, impossible, not impossible. Obviously it makes it a lot more difficult because if that happens, what you have to commit to him is going to make the game so much easier for a very deep offensive team. So when you go and look at him in the conference finals, I think in general this is the rule. And I. So I was curious and I went and looked at. That's what people grabbed the data for me. Just in terms of where Victor Wembanyama initiates sets, where he sets his first screen, if he's going to run ball screen, is he inside a three point line or is he out there 25 to 30ft? Big difference in his productivity, efficiency points per possession for the team, how much more pressure they put on you. If he sets those screens closer to the rim. Why doesn't he some nights because of the way he's being played, physically being pushed off his spot as he runs out there to set the pick. If he's jammed up at the time by somebody that can get into his ribs, get into his hip, push him further out, the pressure on the ball on that given possession was better. So the guard couldn't quite manipulate the ball into the scoring area better. So, you know, you say, well, why doesn't he do it all the time? Well, that's why. Because on different possessions and different nights, some teams are able to pull that off to a higher level. The pressure on the ball forcing it further on the floor, physicality with him forcing him further on the floor where he sets the screens. It's incredibly different in terms of how their offense runs, how much pressure he puts on the back line and to help defenders with his dive when he's doing that from that 20 to 23 foot range and he's one stride, he's at the rim, and how much differently you have to react as a weak side defense and how much help you have to create and how much better their offense is as a result. So I think it's a big factor in the series. I'm going to be watching for it very early in game one and as it progresses. But I think it explains some nights why he's not as impactful because they're not initiating their offense in the better scoring optimal area of the floor for their offense or for him.
Rosenberg
That's incredible insight. It's definitely something to watch as, as this series begins. And another thing to watch is, you know, the contrast between the two leading scorers, the two stars on the team. When it comes to Wembanyama, who's listed at 7 4, he seems bigger than that. And Jalen Brunson, who's listed as 6:2 and sometimes seems smaller than that. And you know, the size difference, as ESPN has shown us in the notes, is the largest size difference between two leading scores going into the NBA final. And so while you broke down about Wembanyama, the question is how do the spurs handle Jalen Brunson and how does Jalen Brunson handle the Spurs? Because I said earlier, Stefan Castle just had to go through seven maddening games defending a guy like sga and now he's got to deal with Jalen Brunson. So what do you see in that Matchup.
Tim Legler
So I think here's where I think Nick fans should feel good. Jalen Brunson is different than Shea in this regard. I think when you go to the series against the spurs and why was Shea Gilgamesh Alexander a lot less efficient than normal? He's so used to Shea coming up and getting into his actions so quickly and attacking off the first action, whether that's a quick high brush screen and he goes or he goes immediately into an ISO, he gets into his spots, elevates, gets his shot off or gets to the line or gets to the rim, whatever it may be. But it's quick in the spurs series. Those guys are doing such a great job on him not letting him get that early that he was having to give it up. And then the second time he got it was deeper into the clock and now he had to go. So he had to like initiate these actions that take a lot of energy multiple times on the same possession. He's not used to doing that. He wore down. He was. To me, there were a lot of nights in that season he was sensational in Game 7. You got to give it to him. The guy made incredible number of tough shots, but he wore down other nights in that series because of what I just described. The good thing about Brunson, if for the Knicks fans, is he's got a different type of game. He's in it. He's got a grounded game. He's not elevating all night long on these mid range jump shots that he's got to get off that are contested. That takes a lot of energy. Jalen Brunson's game's a little different. It's grounded, it's footwork, it's strength, it's balance, it's touch iq. And so he's not going to get ground down as much. And the other thing is, you know, this, this team now with the balance they've achieved in their starting lineup, it doesn't have to be Brunson as much with the usage throughout the game as it does with Oklahoma City. And Shay goes to Salvador without Jalen Williams, without A.J. mitchell, without Chad Hungren, like completely disappeared. So it was so much on his plate. Jalen Brunson has a lot of help in this series and he's going to be fresher later in the game because of his style of game.

Talking to Tim Legler here. Getting ready for the NBA Finals which begins Wednesday in San Antonio. The theme really all these playoffs, Tim. Oh, the Knicks didn't play anybody and now the spurs beat a compromise Thunder team. So really who did they play? Isn't this what parody looks like? This will be the eighth consecutive year of a non repeat champion. Is this just what parody looks like in the NBA?
Tim Legler
Yeah, it looks a lot like this. And I think one of the other things that this is almost, you know, there are two paths to this also. You kind of just look around the league and you go, man, this is what like not being deep enough can do to you. Because injuries now cripple teams more often than ever. Guys out, even if it's a night in a series or guys at multiple games or guys out for the whole series or guys playing through injuries. Like even in the Cleveland Knicks series, I think Donovan Mitchell wasn't right, so. So he's trying to play through and give him credit, he actually played decently. Other guys in that team didn't play very well, but to me it's about the depth that you have to have to sustain it and the availability for best players is everything. And the Knicks and Spurs have been able to navigate that for the most part. They've had some guys missed some games, but it's been nothing crippling. And I think that's really what you're looking at. Why these two teams are the last two standing. That's a large part of it. But also they have multiple ways to beat you on a given night. They can play fast, they can play half court execution, they're elite defensively, they can knock down threes at a high rate if they have to on a given night. So I think the diversity with which they can excel both teams is why they're still standing and why this series is fascinating and why I would be shocked if this isn't a super compelling long series with great finishes. Maybe not every night, but I think the majority of the games in this series are going to still be winnable for either team in the fourth quarter.
Rosenberg
It really like it does set up to be something like that where you know, like we were talking about the stat earlier, the game one winner goes on to win the series 70% of the time. How critical is winning that game one? And I'm like, I don't know, in a series like this, like early, early like might set a tone or something, but I don't think early matter. I think it's the team that finishes the series strong like that that to me feels like a bigger impact game. Like later on But I. I'm with you. And Don even said, like, Donnie was like every other game, this could go. This could go that way. It could vacillate from game to game. But what the. What I wanted to throw at you when we're talking about Wemby is with Jeremy Soham being a Nick, even though he doesn't play. He did an interview at the New York Post where he's like, oh, I know everything about this guy, and this is what we need to do. And while playing him, physical is one thing. He said it's less about banging and, like, hitting them and more about making them run. Because we saw, we see the on off splits when he's off the court. The spurs struggle. That's why Cornette played six minutes in that game. 7. They couldn't afford to have Wimadiano on the bench. If you, if the Knicks, who have been running a lot more, a lot of transition in the playoffs, if they can get him in transition to a point where he needs a break because he's. He's run out of gas like Sohen says he does, how big of an. How big of an advantage could that be?
Tim Legler
Yeah, that's big. I agree with that point of view, by the way. I do agree that, though, that the physicality is critical. And I just think where you hit him first, how much you make him work for leverage. What I have seen on nights with him, their guards sometimes can bail too quickly on him establishing post position if he gets a switch or if he's got a smaller guy, which everybody's smaller, actually, I'm laughing at my own line there, everybody. But you know what I mean, if he gets those, those switches where he rolls somebody into that mid post, he's never going to work you all the way down to the block, catch the ball, go into a post move, he's not strong enough to do that. So he. But he catches it at 12ft with a guy behind him. And what I've seen is when the guys can switch on him in front of him, it takes him a little time to, like, wrestle down there because he's just. It's harder for a guy that tall that's thin to be able to hold his position against strong wings and. But I see sometimes the ball gets reversed before he's established that position. So the physicality is. You have to fight him for every square inch of real estate and force those guards to make difficult entry passes to him, even if he's not fully established. But running the floor, getting me to attack critical And I think another area he's much more susceptible to picking up fouls if you force the ball to change sides of the floor. If you want to play on one side of the floor and allow Victor Wembanyama to hang out on the on the edge of the lane on the opposite side of the court, he's meeting everything at the rim. You're not scoring in the paint if you force him into actions on one side, ball comes out, hops to the other side and now there's a driver, a slash as he's rotating back to the lane. He's a little bit out of position and moving. You've got a better chance to get into his body. And and because that's another area that you would try to get him off the court if you can pick up some fouls, it's easier said than done. Because of his length, he can kind of back up and still get a piece. But when he's moving more laterally in the half court defensively, you've got a much better chance to attack him than if you get stagnant or predictable in where you're operating your offense. And he could just hang out and you could pick then who you want him to gu.
Alan Hahn
Tim, great stuff as usual. Enjoy it man. We'll talk to you soon.

Last Call Crew 1-800-919-3776. We were talking about people that were alive or remember the last time the Knicks won a championship? Got a couple of those people on hold, including Linda out on Long Island. You're on ESPN New York. What's going on?
Linda (Caller)
Hey, Don and Alan, can you hear me okay?
Rosenberg
Oh, yeah, perfectly. Linda, how are you?
Linda (Caller)
I'm great. I know you're a Long Islander, too. Alan. Alan, I love your commentating. Every time I watch a game, I switch to the channel that you're on so I can hear you, you know, comment on the game. I just really appreciate your intelligent and analytic commentating. So thank you.
Rosenberg
Thank you.
Linda (Caller)
So I was alive in 1973. I'm 70 years old. I remember my father used to take us to the Garden to see the games. I saw every game that season. So Willis, the busher, Clyde, they were like family members. That's how much New York loved those guys. So those of us who are old enough to remember, we know what we're looking at right now. That's sort of the calculus. We can see what's going on. Then came 1994. As you're watching the games, you know, it flips to O.J. simpson on the freeway in Los Angeles. It's Patrick. It's Starks. And then, what was it? The last game of the season, of the series, rather. Starks goes up and misses the shot at the buzzer. New York City was like a funeral. The next day, Pat Riley quit right and left. And that's the day I stopped watching the Knicks 30 years ago because the disappointment was so thick, you just felt like they were losers and they were never going to win. And I'm sharing this stuff because now, you know, I heard about Lin Mania. Now I'm looking at this team. It's the first time, seriously, in all that time that they're playing like a team. Alan, you've been so, you know, right on with your. Your description of how they've transformed in the. In the postseason. They've abandoned the solitary hero model, and they're playing like a team. They're all good. I think Wemby's time is coming. I think he will be the face of the NBA. But he's young. They're all, like, too young. I think, as you've said, this is a team of destiny. I think the Knicks are going to win. They Would have brought it to any of the teams that won in the West. They're that good. Someone's got to tell Ty Butler this because he keeps rooting for the West.
Rosenberg
Well, he's a Laker fan. His. His dad is a Knicks fan. He had to grow up listening to it.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, listen, and Ty's gonna be coming up. Up at 7.
Rosenberg
Yeah, but. But I mean, it's interesting, like Linda and others who did, who are old enough to have seen those 70 and I, you know, we had Clyde on, and Clyde made that comparison. They remind this current team, reminds him of those teams. And a lot of people that watch those teams back then, that was it. They. They didn't have individual superstars, but they collectively were a superstar team. And that's what this group is reminding a lot of people about.
Alan Hahn
I didn't like the fact she disappeared for 30 years. But listen, it's all right. She seemed nice.
Rosenberg
Well, I. It just does let you know, though, Don, that. That loss, that loss in 94, that hurt. That was a deep cut, man.
Alan Hahn
No, I understand. And she was out. And then ironically, comes back when they're in the finals. They have a name for that, but she was just too nice. So we'll save that for Friday.
Rosenberg
She mentioned Linsanity.
Alan Hahn
Well, she said she heard it. She heard about
Tim Legler
hurts.
Alan Hahn
That's why she's 73 and probably live to 103.
Rosenberg
Right. Because you have to live through the pain of 27 years.
Alan Hahn
A lot of pain.
Tim Legler
Which.
Alan Hahn
Yeah, she spared herself all of that. Andy in Florida, you're on. Don Hanna, Rosenberg.
Andy (Caller)
Hey, guys. How are you?
Rosenberg
Good, how are you? Sub Andy.
Andy (Caller)
I too, was there. I'm now 71 years old. I was 15 years old. I remember the smell of the circus. It smelled awful. The elephants.
Alan Hahn
But that meant.
Andy (Caller)
I remember the smoke, where sometimes when there was smoke, you could barely. People smoked in those days. You could barely see this. The court at times because I always sat up in the blues.
Rosenberg
Mm. It was hazy.
Alan Hahn
I do miss that.
Andy (Caller)
It was.
Alan Hahn
It was probably a lot healthier for us. And Andy, thank you for the phone call. I do miss the blue seats. I do miss the old garden. Even though it's fabulous what they did with the reimagining.
Rosenberg
No, no.
Alan Hahn
Chase Bridge and all that, but.
Rosenberg
And they do have a blue section. They. They kept one area and they. The. The seats are blue, as you know. And they still exist, but not like back in the day when it was all the way around. Don. My first ever Knicks game, I sat not only in the blues but my, like I was the last. Last row behind me was the. The cinder block wall. My first Nick game. So I. I have that blue experience. Blue seats.
Alan Hahn
Yep. And a lot, A lot of things especially with the Rangers and the chance and everything. That was. That was a different time for sure. Let's go to Chris on in Long Island. You're on ESPN New York. What's up man?
Andy (Caller)
Hey, what's up fellas? You know, I've been Nick fan for a long time. My strange poll for you, Alan would be obviously Marty Collins.
Rosenberg
What a score. No, he was tough. I like Marty Collins. He was tough.
Andy (Caller)
Oh God, Alan. He is the worst though. Ronaldo Balkman, Eric.
Rosenberg
But real quick, I have a whole bunch draft could not get. Oh, dude, you remember when Isaiah said that he reminds me of Dennis Rodman.
Andy (Caller)
With your eyes closed maybe.
Tim Legler
Oh, wow. That's.
Andy (Caller)
That's about it.
Tim Legler
So just.
Andy (Caller)
I'll be. I'll be super quick. Alan, does this remind you possibly like this first again, I'm not saying the Knicks could definitely win this, but could this possibly be a moment where like the spurs are almost like the jets and remember the can't wait jets is that you think that this could be something possible like that.
O'Reilly Auto Parts Advertiser
Like.
Rosenberg
Like meaning that's as far as it can't.
Alan Hahn
I think like, like, like this is
Andy (Caller)
super emotional that like all of a sudden now they don't realize they run into like.
Rosenberg
Like this. You mean like absolute train. They feel like they've already won. And then.
Tim Legler
Right. Chat.
Andy (Caller)
It was such a. Like this was so. And they're 22. You know what I mean? They're so young. Could this be like one of those. I'm not saying this is how the series ends, but I mean, man, could the Knicks. If it's not the Knicks. I'm a basketball junkie.
Tim Legler
I'm saying.
Rosenberg
I was going to say Shaq's first year in the finals with Ma, with Orlando, that was his first experience. 95. And them getting to the finals that young was like, wow. Like they already here. And then they. I mean the Rockets won back to back. So they had already won a title, had it in their pocket, but still like it was in Shaq's time yet. I'm just wondering like even, even like
Andy (Caller)
if this isn't the Knicks. I'm saying, I'm saying this is another team because again, I'm watching basketball all the time. So this is another team. I'm saying, oh, game one. I'm taking this team because. Because the spurs just came off this emotional. I know they have a little bit of time, but man, what a time to really get give them a punch. In the first game.
Alan Hahn
There was something about beating the Patriots the way the Patriots destroyed them in the regular season, that maybe the feeling was that was the Jets super bowl, that they finally beat the Patriots at a big spot and didn't have anything left for the championship game. I'm not sure that's the case here for the spurs, but I guess it could be. Alan, we'll talk to you again tomorrow at 3 o'. Clock.
