From Tokyo, Japan, and Abu Dhabi, uae, this is down to Business English Business news to improve your business English with your hosts, Skip Montreux and Des Morgan. Hello, Des. Good to be back with you again. How are you?
B
I'm very sorry, Skip, but I'm afraid I'm not talking to you at the moment.
A
What are you talking about? Have I done something wrong?
B
Not you specifically, but I'm boycotting all things Canadian, including talking to Canadian people.
A
Oh, is that right? And what exactly has Canada done to offend you, Daz?
B
Well, not me, Skip, but I'm supporting my Chinese brothers.
A
Your Chinese brothers? What are you talking about?
B
Actually, sister is better.
A
Oh, I see. You're talking about the arrest in Vancouver of Meng Wanzhou, the heir to the Huawei telecom empire.
B
Well, I'm not talking about anything. I'm not talking to you, remember?
A
Well, at least explain everything to our listeners. You are talking about Ms. Wanzhou's arrest?
B
Yes, that's why I'm supporting my Chinese brothers and sisters against Canadian oppression.
A
Oh, that's a little bit strong, Des. The case against her is that she was breaking US Sanctions against Iran by. By doing business with them through a company called Skycom. And she claims Skycom was not a subsidiary of Huawei.
B
And is it a subsidiary?
A
Well, I guess that is what the court case next February in Vancouver will be trying to establish. If she is found guilty, she could be extradited to the US to face fraud charges.
B
You mean that Canada would send her to the US to face charges?
A
Yes. And as you can imagine, the Chinese government is pretty angry about this case. And all of this is happening right in the middle of a possible trade war between China and the U.S. i
B
read that President Trump may even step in and pardon Ms. Wanzhou to protect national security interests or to help achieve a trade deal with China. Is she in jail?
A
Actually, she has been released on bail. So we Canadians are not all that bad.
B
Hmm, maybe not.
A
We will have to see what happens with this case anyway. Although our topic today is not about Huawei or President Trump. It is about China. So, Des, would you put your protest on hold just for a little bit and speak to me? Today's story is supporting your Chinese brothers and sisters after all.
B
Maybe just this once.
