Title: Antarctic Tears Subtitle: Determination, Adversity, and the Pursuit of a Dream at the Bottom of the World Author: Aaron Linsdau Narrator: Aaron Linsdau Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 40 mins Language: English Release date: 12-12-17 Publisher: Sastrugi Press Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Emotions run high in this true polar adventure. It's a story of triumph, harrowing danger, and outright adventure. In 2012, Aaron Linsdau left his entire life behind. Gone was the engineering career. He told his family and girlfriend that he wanted to pursue a dream to do something no other American had ever accomplished. He wanted to be the first to ski from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back without aid or support. Alone. The journey to the South Pole covers over 700 miles through the most forbidding frozen terrain on the planet. The temperature is always below zero and gale force winds routinely roar across the ice. The polar plateau is devoid of life. There are no plants, animals, or insects. Antarctica provides no shelter, no protection, and is unforgiving of any mistake. Before the expedition was to start, there was much to do. Linsdau trekked 100 miles across the Greenland tundra. He skied across Yellowstone in the winter, camping in -45 degree temperatures. Towing tires up mountains and eating 4000 calories a day was preparation for Antarctica. Previous expeditions have lost tents, helplessly watching them blow over the horizon. Many explorers have quit or been rescued. What began as a brave adventure into the unknown turned into a battle for survival. Linsdau takes the listener to Antarctica. They experience incredible storms, skiing blind through whiteouts, crossing invisible crevasses, and skirting disaster. The audiobook tells what happened every day of the expedition. The air is cold enough to freeze water in seconds and cause frostbite in minutes. Only outer space is less hospitable. Driven by passion, he sacrifices nearly everything to make his dream come true. This is a story about personal discovery, testing the limits of human endurance, total dedication to achieving a goal, and never giving up even when both body and equipment fail. There were many surprises during Aaron Linsdau's expedition to the South Pole.... Linsdau speaks about this extraordinary experience to audiences worldwide. Members Reviews: Just reading this book will make you shiver - not just from reading about cold, but also with amazement A very good travelogue about one man's solo trek to the bottom of the Earth. With an outstanding introduction, this book details the preparation, the family and job hardships, but mostly the astounding challenges encountered and conquered by one man, using gritty determination, a never-say-quit attitude, and intelligently using the guidance of others and his own common sense as he tackles an adventure almost no one else would have the courage to tackle. Very well-written and engaging, this book is well worth the read. Great adventure/travel adventure journal I really admire this man's perseverance. While I don't have that drive to attempt the extreme I appreciate those who do. I found out a lot of things about Antarctica that I had never known or even imagined. The author had a good way of putting you out there with him. There were some nights that I was happy for my extra blanket while reading before I went to sleep. I hope he achieves his goals on his next journey. And I hope that he journals that one as well as he did this one and then shares it with all of his readers. I would recommend this to anyone. Title: Indiana After Dark: A Memoir Author: David B. Boyer Narrator: Michael Goldsmith Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 17 mins Language: English Release date: 12-07-17 Publisher: David Byron Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Endings are easy. New beginnings are hard. It all seems like a life time ago now. Then again, when youve spent half of your life chasing ghosts, you tend to lose track of time in the sense that most of us experience it. That, along with having been a career alcoholic, tends to cloud a persons mind just a tad bit after so many lost years go by like a blur. So says the author of this riveting memoir, who spent 25 years of his life as an alcoholic. Now sober since 2007, he provides the reader with a nightmarish vision into the mind of a man who, once a normal, average teenager, quickly turned into a chronic alcoholic to escape the loneliness of his sad home life - and looking for love in all the wrong places. Sad, grim, but often times poignant and sweet, Indiana After Dark provides a glimpse into a life of a man teetering on the edge of darkness - and finding his way back to the light through a nightmarish haze of diversity. Title: Hurry Up Nurse 2: London Calling Author: Dawn Brookes Narrator: Emma Jordan Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 1 min Language: English Release date: 11-16-17 Publisher: Dawn Brookes Publishing Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: This sequel to Hurry Up Nurse: Memoirs of Nurse Training in the 1970s follows the author to London in 1980. Here, she takes up further nurse training at a hospital in the heart of the capitals east end. The author moves into a nurses home, so expect some antics as she and her newfound friends settle in. Hurry Up Nurse 2: London Calling is another charming medical biography that includes humor and compassion as you would expect from this author. There is a lot of nursing and medical history to pack in, as the experiences are set in a hospital specializing in heart and chest surgery. Cancer chemotherapy is in its infancy, open heart surgery is fast becoming routine, and tuberculosis is ever-present in the east end, so theres a lot to learn. Added to all of this is the inquiring mind of a young nurse who, having been told to avoid the hospital God-squad, does the exact opposite. There are some lovable characters in this audiobook, from the charming Mr. Robinson, who sees potential in this lively young woman now aged 21, to the energetic Mrs. Chang, the girls in the nurses home, the night porter, and, of course, the patients who touch all of their lives. Members Reviews: Satisfy your curiosity ! I listened to Dawns' first book and was hooked ! Translated by Agnete Dorph Stjernfelt (P)2017 Gyldendal Members Reviews: Real life in Afghanistan. I found this book to be quite enlightening about real life in Afghanistan. It's about a man who owns a bookstore where he makes a good living for his family. It covers some of the history of the country and the various rulers. For example, life before the Taliban was more free than after the Taliban won power and enforced an extreme form of Sharia law. It is amazing how little power people had over their own lives under that Law. I grew up here in the good old USA, and find it difficult to grasp living under Islamic rule where there is no freedom, especially for women. What a provocative book! A friend of mine lent me her copy of this book and the first question I asked her was, was it good? She said, yes, and it is definitely thought-provoking. As soon as I finished reading another book for a book club, I picked this one up and finished it in two days. I literally could not put the book down. It is very well-written and tells a story of a man and his family in Afghanistan just after 9/11, during the Taliban times and after the fall of the Taliban. She claims she wrote it in a novel form based on true stories of what she heard told to her while visiting Afghanistan. It definitely read as a novel, but I knew that it wasn't fiction. I also knew that it's a very small representation of what goes on in Afghanistan as it is just one man and his family's story. It is also not a very flattering picture of that man's life and as for accuracy, I am assuming that it is accurate for that family, but not necessarily accurate for the entire society as a whole. This book literally gave me the goosebumps. Here is an educated man who loves his books more than anything in the world and he has high dreams of printing books and selling them to everyone. He is also the head of his family, one of thirteen children. His mother, three younger sisters, two wives, children all live with him in a tiny flat that used to be in middle class district of Kabul before it was destroyed by the Taliban. He puts his two sons to work instead of allowing them to go to school. Before 9/11 happened, all the women and kids were in school. After 9/11, they went into hiding. Before 9/11, the women didn't have to wear the stifling burkas. After 9/11, they did.

Title: An Odyssey: A Father, A Son and an Epic Author: Daniel Mendelsohn Narrator: Bronson Pinchot Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 36 mins Language: English Release date: 09-11-17 Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: From the award-winning, best-selling writer: a deeply moving tale of a father and son's transformative journey in reading - and reliving - Homer's epic masterpiece. When 81-year-old Jay Mendelsohn decides to enrol in the undergraduate seminar on The Odyssey that his son Daniel teaches at Bard College, the two find themselves on an adventure as profoundly emotional as it is intellectual. For Jay, a retired research scientist who sees the world through a mathematician's unforgiving eyes, this return to the classroom is his 'one last chance' to learn about the great literature he'd neglected in his youth - and, even more, a final opportunity to understand his son. But through the sometimes uncomfortable months that follow, as the two men explore Homer's great work together - first in the classroom, where Jay persistently challenges his son's interpretations, and then during a surprise-filled Mediterranean journey retracing Odysseus' legendary voyages - it becomes clear that Daniel has much to learn, too, for Jay's responses to both the text and the travels gradually uncover long-buried secrets that allow the son to understand his difficult father at last. As this intricately woven memoir builds to its wrenching climax, Mendelsohn's narrative comes to echo The Odyssey itself, with its timeless themes of deception and recognition, marriage and children, the pleasures of travel and the meaning of home. Rich with literary and emotional insight, An Odyssey is a renowned author-scholar's most revelatory entwining yet of personal narrative and literary exploration. Critic Reviews: "My favourite classicist once again combines meticulous literary investigation with warm and wrenching human emotion - books like these are why I love reading." (Lee Child) "There are a handful of books that have captured the pleasure and romance of this subject. Donna Tartt's was one...this is another. Homer has a phrase for those who can speak bewitchingly: they have 'winged words'. Mendelsohn has winged words." (The Times) "Sharply intelligent.... A frequent contributor to the New Yorker and the New York Times Book Review, Mendelsohn is also a classics scholar. His father, a retired mathematician, had been interested in the classics during his school days and decided to continue his education by studying with his son.... Ultimately, this book [is] about what they learn about each other - and what they can never know about each other. The author uses a close reading of the epic to illuminate the mysteries of the human condition; he skillfully, subtly interweaves textual analysis [with] the lessons of life outside it.... A well-told story that underscores the power of storytelling." (Kirkus) Members Reviews: Ingeniously Weaves Memoir and Literary Commentary into A Modern Odyssey As other reviewers have noted, Daniel Mendelssohn skillfully interweaves a compelling father and son narrative along with erudite commentary on the text of the Odyssey in this book. The prose is superb, the characters engaging and the narrative makes the reader interested enough to continue reading. What other reviewers seem to have missed is that the book itself literally is An Odyssey.

Title: Tilting Subtitle: A Memoir Author: Nicole Harkin Narrator: Maureen Boutilier Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 20 mins Language: English Release date: 08-24-17 Publisher: Beacon Audiobooks Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: We only learned about our father's girlfriend after he became deathly ill and lay in a coma 120 miles from our home. Overhearing the nurse tell Linda - since I was nine I had called my mom by her first name - about the girlfriend who came in almost every day to visit him when we weren't there confirmed that the last moment of normal had passed us by without our realizing it. Up to then, our family had unhappily coexisted with Dad flying jumbo jets to Asia while we lived in Montana. We finally came together to see Dad through his illness, but he was once again absent from a major family event - unable to join us from his comatose state. This is the moment when our normal existence tilted. Dad recovered, but the marriage ailed, as did Linda, with cancer. Our family began to move down an entirely different path with silver linings we wouldn't see for many years. In this candid and compassionate memoir, Nicole Harkin describes with an impressionist's fine eye the evolution of a family that is quirky, independent, uniquely supportive, peculiarly loving, and, most of all, marvelously human. Members Reviews: Touching, insightful memoir. Well-written and well read memoir about a dysfunctional but lovable family told with wit, humor, and insight. The author tells a tale of resiliency at its best in a very engaging way. I enjoyed all six hours I spent getting to know Nicole and her family. I highly recommend this book/recording. Not worth your time I dont usually write negative reviews, but this book needs people warned about. The narrator is perhaps the worst Ive experienced. Every voice except hers is either a wicked witch or a snaggle-toothed hillbilly. I had to listen to it at a faster speed to be able to stand it. At one point she used the word interrupt when she obviously meant interpret. And it was very disconcerting to hear her repeatedly pronounce reconcile as ree-concile. As for the writer, she comes across as a shallow human being, although that might be the fault of her simplistic world view and unsophisticated writing style. For example, she admitted that she got hysterical when her husband gently suggested that they wash their clothes separately. Earlier she pried a secret out of her younger sister, promising she wouldnt tell, and when the sister finally admitted it was she whod cut the cats hair, the writer immediately told. I only finished the book, thinking it would get better. It didnt.

Title: I'll Give You Something to Cry About Subtitle: A Memoir of a Daughter's Struggle to Survive a Mother with Paranoia, Schizophrenia, and Manic Depression Author: Elizabeth Acker Narrator: Elizabeth Acker Format: Unabridged Length: 14 hrs and 49 mins Language: English Release date: 08-24-17 Publisher: Author's Republic Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 8 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: In I'll Give You Something to Cry About, Elizabeth Acker gives a stunning account of growing up under the abusive control of an emotionally and mentally ill mother. Elizabeth is forced to become estranged from her father, and struggles alone to create hope and meaning for her life, while serving her mother like a slave. This audiobook is a true account of a daughter's struggle to survive a mother with paranoia, schizophrenia, and manic depression. Members Reviews: Narrator makes me feel as though I'm being abused I have listened to many similar books but can't go any further with this one. Her voice sounds angry... She is abusing the Listener. I can't even finish it. If you never got past 6th grade, this should be right on your reading level. The narrators voice switching from character to character is so amateurish that at times I had to just turn it off. The story is typical of someone who has a very difficult childhood, but it takes a long time to get anywhere. Perhaps if I were reading it, it would be tolerable. I could skip ahead. I am giving up. Not sending it back, since I sent back the last , similar book , "Estranged", by Jessica Gross. Move on.

Title: Leap In Subtitle: A Woman, Some Waves, and the Will to Swim Author: Alexandra Heminsley Narrator: Alexandra Heminsley Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 33 mins Language: English Release date: 07-04-17 Publisher: HighBridge, a Division of Recorded Books Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 7 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: "It's a meditative act," they said. But it's far from meditative for Alexandra Heminsley when yet another wave slams into her face. It's survival. When she laced up her shoes in Running Like a Girl, all she had to do to become a runner was to get out there and run. But swimming is something else entirely. The water is all-consuming, confusing her every move, sabotaging every breath. Determined, Alexandra will learn to adapt, find new strengths, and learn to work with the water. She does not want to stand on the beach looking at the sea any longer. She wants to leap in. In doing so she will learn not just how to accept herself but how to accept what lies beyond. Soon she will be able to see water anywhere in the world and sense not fear but adventure. She will dive into water as she hopes to dive into life. And it has nothing to do with being "sporty" or being the correct shape for a swimsuit. Members Reviews: Really Enjoyable, but no Running Like a Girl I have read "Running Like a Girl" multiple times and I was hoping this book would be similarly inspiring as I learned how to swim as an adult. While "Leap In" was inspiring, it didn't quite match Hemmo's previous book. It was a great read, and I loved the section at the end where the author recommended swimming drills and equipment. Plus, as a woman who started swimming at age 40, it was very helpful to hear the author's real life explanation of things like getting on a wetsuit, why she wears flip flops at the pool, and how she felt wearing a swimsuit to the pool the first few times. I would recommend this book to any adult who is new to swimming.

Title: Pardon My French Subtitle: How a Grumpy American Fell in Love with France Author: Allen Johnson Narrator: David de Vries Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 48 mins Language: English Release date: 06-02-17 Publisher: Brilliance Audio Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: To make a friend is a joy. To make a friend in another country is a wonderment - a small miracle. Pardon My French follows an American author who has embraced a daunting mission: not to be a spectator in France but an enthusiastic participant - fully engaged, fully alive. In France, Johnson is like an alien from another planet. Everything is strange to him. His goal is to speak French without going to prison, drive without being squashed like a bug, dance the tango without losing his marriage, and belt out a tune with a world-class jazz combo without being booed off the stage. Repeatedly, the author fearlessly steps into harm's way. He joins a summer acting troop and witnesses the French version of sexual liberation. He pits his rather staid and conventional driving skills against the French speed demons of Languedoc. He tries to be cool in a painting class while sputtering nervously in front of the nude model with the long legs and silky voice. And then, after it all - after the splendor of Christmas on the Mediterranean, the bicycle tours along the French canals, the mountain treks amply supplied with French bread, cheese, and wine - the miracle happens. The often self-deprecating and bungling American meets and falls in love with a beautiful mistress: La belle France. And when he does, an entire village adopts him into a new family - one with a gracious heart and a beautiful French accent. Members Reviews: Maybe somewhat egotistical? Yes, the 4 stars say "I like it". It gives a pretty good, if generalized idea, of French mores and customs as well as explaining the pitfalls of the language -- and there's great insight into the French psyche. Allen writes well, and the anecdotes are enjoyable. However, this should have been 3 1/2 stars, as I found an underlying sense of egotism in his tales which rankled a little bit. His wife Nita definitely plays a minor role in the book and we never get to know her properly. There's a lot of "aren't I cute and talented" in this memoir, which bothered me. Allen Johnson no doubt has many talents, but a little more modesty wouldn't have hurt! He presents himself -- and I have no doubt that its true -- as this very popular American in southern France. Still, I think anyone contemplating an extended stay in La France Profonde should definitely read this book. Anecdotal Read on the French Culture. Don't pass it up! Before departing for France, I read many books on French culture. My goal: to understand, to respect the French people as I travel in France for a month. I read books on the Rick Steves' recommend list, listened to his podcast interviews with people who live in France, read others I found, and Allen Johnson's, Pardon My French. Pardon My French gave me a deeper picture of the culture of the people of France. Told in anecdotal form,. Allen's experiences jived with what the French authors and interviewees shared on "understanding the French." Definitely, definitely valuable if you will be traveling to France. And, if not, what a fun read! Enjoy. Just don't pass it up! A wonderful, moving read! This account of one man's (and his wife's) first-hand experience living in France will make a Francophile of even the most hesitant.
