Dick's Electric Dreams Author: Philip K. Dick Narrator: Peter Berkrot, Luke Daniels, Jeff Cummings, Patrick Lawlor, Tanya Eby Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 56 mins Language: English Release date: 01-02-18 Publisher: Brilliance Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 33 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: The Stories Behind the Series Though perhaps most famous as a novelist, Philip K. Dick wrote more than 100 short stories over the course of his career, each as mind-bending and genre-defining as his longer works. Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams collects 10 of the best. In "Autofac," Dick shows us one of the earliest examples (and warnings) in science fiction of self-replicating machines. "Exhibit Piece" and "The Commuter" feature Dick exploring one of his favorite themes: the shifting nature of reality and whether it is even possible to perceive the world as it truly exists. And "The Hanging Stranger" provides a thrilling, dark political allegory as relevant today as it was when Dick wrote it at the height of the Cold War. Strange, funny, and powerful, the stories in this collection highlight a master at work, encapsulating his boundless imagination and deep understanding of the human condition. Members Reviews: I Enjoy P K But this presentation, eck. The 1st 3 stories met and exceeded my expectations. After that downhill as the stories were/seemed bastardized renditions. Maybe better read than listened to. Nice collection if you like PKD. If you're a PKD fan, you'll like this. themes are repetative but always interesting. Not his best but entertaining. Narration left something to be desired. overall worth the purchase.

This book contains 26 of the greatest science fiction stories ever written. They represent the considered verdict of the Science Fiction Writers of America, those who have shaped the genre and who know, more intimately than anyone else, what the criteria for excellence in the field should be. The authors chosen for the Science Fiction Hall Fame are the men and women who have shaped the body and heart of modern science fiction; their brilliantly imaginative creations continue to inspire and astound new generations of writers and fans. In "The Roads Must Roll", Robert Heinlein describes an industrial civilization of the future caught up in the deadly flaws of its own complexity. "Country of the Kind", by Damon Knight, is a frightening portrayal of biological mutation. "Nightfall", by Isaac Asimov, one of the greatest stories in the science fiction field, is the story of a planet where the sun sets only once every millennium and is a chilling study in mass psychology. Originally published in 1970 to honor those writers and their stories that had come before the institution of the Nebula Awards, The Science Fiction Hall Of Fame, Vol. One, was the book that introduced tens of thousands of young listeners to the wonders of science fiction. Members Reviews: The heart and soul of science fiction Ive always felt the short stories appearing in the pulp magazines were the heart and soul of science fiction. These twenty-six tales are the one the Science Fiction Writers of America voted as the best published before 1964. This anthology comes as close to that goal as its possible to achieve with a poll of experts. The narrators has showcased these stories in the best way possible. A great primer for SF history A great foundation for modern sci-fi. Some stories were truly awesome in scope of imagination while others were a tad weaker. but all in all, a very good mix of styles and topics. I think both those beginning to read sci-fi and literary veterans will equally enjoy it. At times the readings suffered from antiquated ideas and speech patterns but that's trifling over small things.

Title: A Midsummer's Party Subtitle: A Tale of The School of Spells & War Author: Morgon Newquist Narrator: Meghan Crawford Format: Unabridged Length: 38 mins Language: English Release date: 10-25-17 Publisher: Silver Empire Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: The Formless are roving the land, unleashing untold havoc. But today, Alis must deal with a bigger problem. It's Cahan's birthday, and she's figured out the perfect gift for him. But it means breaking the rules. The things she does for her friends.... The School of Spells and War is an ongoing collection of old fashioned sword-and-sorcery adventure stories following a wizard and warrior duo as they galavant across the continent of Thillon. Good-humored, powerful warrior Cahan and intelligent, skilled wizard Alis work together to serve their university, the school of spells and war, by battling dragons, investigating plots against the king, hunting witches, and dealing with the ongoing threat of the ancient and mysterious Formless. Members Reviews: A quick, fun entry into the School of Spells & War series. Mrs. Newquist's second book in her School of Spells & War series is a fun little interlude, a short "heist" story like if an 80s college flick was played out in a swords and sorcery setting. Wizard Alis needs a gift for her adventuring companion Cahan the warrior, STAT, and with the help of her wizard friend Brien and a rather fetching kitchen maid, proceed to prank the dean, so to speak, and swipe something from the school's records that Cahan would be most interested in . . .all the while learning that it's fun to break the rules sometimes. This is a set-up, an interstitial tale in Mrs. Newquist's broader saga, but it works. I appreciate the quick, episodic structure, as each story is self-contained but completes a broader piece of the broader narrative. After all, the Formless, those creatures of darkness encountered in book one, Down the Dragon Hole, are still at large . . . Enchanting If your looking for a lighthearted, fun and whimsical read, this is perfect. A wonderful follow up to Down the Dragon Hole. This is a wonderful addition to the Alis & Cahan stories This is a wonderful addition to the Alis & Cahan stories. I loved the additional details we get about the school, and it's touching how much Alis is willing to do to get the perfect gift for someone she cares about. Finding just the right birthday gift is not trivial, especially if you haven't known someone for very long. An enjoyable story that illuminates the characters of Alis and Cahan a bit further. Heartwarmingly fantastic When his birthday is coming up, what do you get the warrior who has everything? And how do you get it when you've worked out what to give? That's the dilemma facing Alis the librarian wizard, an introvert by nature whose previous adventures (detailed in Down the Dragon Hole) have led to her forging a connection with Cahan, the bold and intrepid warrior. The Midsummer celebrations, normally of little interest to her, take on a new significance for Alis when she learns that it's also Cahan's birthday, and so the scene is set for a sweet tale of a socially-awkward girl just trying to do right by her friend. We meet memorable new characters, and Alis herself grows through her experience. I found the book heartwarming, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

Title: The Shed Subtitle: Tales From the World of Adrian's Undead Diary, Volume Four Author: Chris Philbrook Narrator: James Anderson Foster Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 21 mins Language: English Release date: 09-27-17 Publisher: Chris Philbrook Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 34 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: It's the start of summer vacation, and poor Tony has just lost his grandfather. His father is deployed overseas, and his mother is raising him and his little brother all alone. But that's not what's bothering Tony. It's that his nana will be all alone in her small, rural home during the heat of summer, doing the yard work, the laundry, and all the things around the house, while mourning her husband. That won't sit for Tony. With his mother's permission he moves in with Nana for the summer. He rides his bike along the country roads, up and down the hills near Auburn Lake Preparatory Academy, trying to meet a nice girl, and making sure his nana is taken care of. And when the dead rise, and the flesh is consumed, and the living go a little bit mad. Poor little Tony will have to take care of Nana in a wholly different way. Members Reviews: Didn't know I wanted to know Chris Phillbrook has this amazing ability to write stories about things from his other books that I didn't even know I was curious about. These tales books are such a great way to help keep you in the worlds he has created. Great addition to the AUD world My only complaint... it was too short. The character development was great. Okay, I have another complaint... now I want to go back and re-listen to the portion where Adrian found the shed and I wish that there was some note somewhere about where that arc in his story was. Definitely enjoyed this little side jaunt into the AUD world. It's hard to go wrong with Philbrook and Foster Be warned this one does not have a lot of action and is darker than his norm. Dr. A The Shed was a disaster story for the characters. I am a fan of Adrians Undead Diary. I am also an animal lover. This was kind of a hard story for me. Grandma should have been put out of her misery. I dont know if she would have approved of her animals endings. I did not even think about the teeth which I should have. Antonio should have been smarter. However. the story is believable tbat these events could happen during an apocalypse. There is also a bonus vampire short story not related to AUD. Poor hungry Nana.... THE SHED Chris Philbrook is at his copious best with this short story, from describing the drops of puss plopping on the kitchen floor to Nana's dentures flinging from her mouth. Having a warped sense of humor, I found this story kinda funny in a gory, zombie apoc sort of way. It's a great addition to the other 3 trips into the AUD world. If you are a fan of the AUD series, get this book. If you haven't you probably want to wait until you've passed the vignette in the series. It was cool to visit the ALPA neighborhood. As usual JAF does an excellent job narratoing, to me he IS Adrian. I think I'm going to go listen to the series again THE VAMP OF MENLOW PARK This short is on another collection of short stories, AT LEAST HIS HEAD ISN'T ON FIRE, and was a standout story. I think it could become a whole book if Chris ever wanted to get into writting vampire books.

Members Reviews: Superb storytellers and skilled writers! Inspiring, really. After spending recent weeks plodding through anthologies which were compiled by editors who didnât edit, and perhaps didnât proofread, I was elated with this collection. Stories were detailed, believable, logically plotted, and humane, but were also written by writers with a mastery of syntax, grammar, punctuation, and diction. And no story appeared to be a patent (blatant) promo for a novel sold by the author as a three-book series. Thank you, editors and authors, for reviving my enjoyment of a genre that has been my favorite for over half a century. Three Stars More fantasy than sci fi but all good of their kind. like flowers in springtime It's the beginning of awards season in the science fiction and fantasy field, and there are a ton of them: Hugo, Nebula, Locus, World Fantasy, Crawford, Clarke, Campbell. The list goes on and on. Science fiction, fantasy, and all their related sub-genres probably have more awards than any other endeavor. And right on cue, the "Best of the Year" anthologies are starting to pop up all over the place, like flowers in springtime. There is a great number of those anthologies that come out every year, and this year is no exception. The longest running best of the year is put together by Gardner Dozois, which this year will find itself with its 34th edition. One of the finest best of the year anthologies, however, is edited by Jonathan Strahan. Strahan is one of the most well respected, talented, and prolific anthology editors in the field today (Never mind that he is the reviews editor for Locus Magazine and is an editor for tor.com, all while holding down a day job. I get tired just thinking about it). Other than this year's best of collection, he is also the editor of the Infinity project, an annual anthology of hard sf stories that will see its seventh volume published later this year. This years best of collection does not disappoint. This year's volume contains four of this year's Hugo nominees - three novelettes and a short story - but the rest of the stories are outstanding as well.

Title: The Strange Bird Subtitle: A Borne Story Author: Jeff VanderMeer Narrator: Emily Woo Zeller Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 5 mins Language: English Release date: 08-15-17 Publisher: Blackstone Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 18 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: The Strange Bird - from New York Times best-selling novelist Jeff VanderMeer - expands and weaves deeply into the world of his critically acclaimed novel Borne. The Strange Bird is a new kind of creature, built in a laboratory - she is part bird, part human, part many other things. But now the lab in which she was created is under siege, and the scientists have turned on their animal creations. Flying through tunnels, dodging bullets, and changing her colors and patterning to avoid capture, the Strange Bird manages to escape. But she cannot just soar in peace above the earth. The sky itself is full of wildlife that rejects her as one of their own, and also full of technology - satellites and drones and other detritus of the human civilization below that has all but destroyed itself. And the farther she flies, the deeper she finds herself in the orbit of the Company, a collapsed biotech firm that has populated the world with experiments both failed and successful that have outlived the corporation itself: a pack of networked foxes, a giant predatory bear. But of the many creatures she encounters with whom she bears some kind of kinship, it is the humans - all of them now simply scrambling to survive - who are the most insidious, who still see her as simply something to possess, to capture, to trade, to exploit. Never to understand, never to welcome home. With The Strange Bird, Jeff VanderMeer has done more than add another layer to his celebrated novel Borne. He has created a whole new perspective on the world inhabited by Rachel and Wick, the Magician, Mord, and Borne - a view from above, of course, but also a view from deep inside the mind of a creature who will fight and suffer and live for the tenuous future of this world. Members Reviews: Great story and narration but... This is exactly what was needed to round out Borne and while the narrator was excellent, her voice and tone made me want to take a nap. I don't mean that I was bored but it felt like I was getting read a bedtime story as a child.

Title: Oblivion Subtitle: A Short Story Prequel Author: Justin Dockins Narrator: Chiquito Joaquim Crasto Format: Unabridged Length: 39 mins Language: English Release date: 08-07-17 Publisher: Justin Dockins Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: A gift of power was once handed down to one of the earliest inhabitants of the planet Kaliya, and through countless lifetimes the gift has altered the patterns of fate for all beings who live there. Though the power of the violet fire is inherently good, it was indeed an inconceivably dark force that first brought it there. The Star Gazer, a primitive and wooly beast who was not wholly unlike the Khurran of Wild Mountain, must bear the frightening responsibility of keeping the power safe, lest it forever be cast into oblivion! Members Reviews: A foe of extraordinary magnitude A primitive look at the world of Kaliya. Excellent quick read with a foe of extraordinary magnitude at the end.

Title: Richard's Story Subtitle: A Numbers Game Short Author: Rebecca Rode Narrator: Stacey Glemboski Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 9 mins Language: English Release date: 07-13-17 Publisher: Rebecca Rode Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 16 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: Richard just wanted a girlfriend - not the apocalypse. Richard Peak's senior year is looking painfully ordinary - fighting for position on the soccer team, his parents' constant arguing, a glaring lack of a girlfriend. He can't wait to graduate and join a soccer team overseas, preferably as far from home as possible. Then the president is assassinated and his life changes forever. As an alarming chain of nationwide terrorist attacks trigger a civil war, Richard finds himself on a dangerous journey for survival. As those around him fall prey to hunger, illness, and hatred, Richard must decide between a full stomach and humanity - and somehow create a new society out of the ashes of a fallen world. Richard's Story is the secret journal of the boy eventually founded the New Order Republic of America (NORA). This is an exclusive prequel to the best-selling Numbers Game Saga. Members Reviews: Interesting, but a bit disturbing Of all the books in the series I liked this one the least. While the content was excellent a lot of it was already covered word for word in the third book. There is new material and it is interesting to get Richard Peak's story in this own words but I was a little disappointed that so much of it was a repeat. Is it worth listening to? Yes, this book effectively gives the story of the birth of NORA and the numbers system. The narration is once again excellent. The POV for this story is Richards' but Stacey did such a great job I forgot I was listening to a female narrator! I received this book free from the narrator/publisher/author in exchange for an honest review. If you found this review helpful would you please take a moment to click yes below, thanks. HEARTBREAKING AND REAL....THE BEGINNING OF IT ALL! Any additional comments? ** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ** This was a prequel to this series, the start of it all...Richard and others had to suffer in order for things to come to order as they did....Richard was very brave, and endured lots of negative treatment, but vowed to make things better....he lost his entire family, all his friends and was shunned..but he never gave up! Good story and narration....I recommend it if you are a fan of the series!!! Richard's story I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. This book started out really slow for me, I've stuck it out though I would like to read/listen to the next one...I thought the narrator was awesome and I look forward to listening to more to see if its a genre I would like to pursue more. Great Prequel Any additional comments? Very entertaining and enjoyable. Great addition to the series. This was an interesting insight to how the number system started. Even if you have already read the rest of the series this prequel fills in the backstory of how and why the country is the way it is. Told by Treena's grandfather Richard. The story details the events that preceded the collapse of society. The changes it had on not only Richard's life but the whole country. Leading him to implement the number system. Stacey Glemboski did a fantastic job with the narration as usual. She has one of those voices that just pulls you into the story and makes it and the characters come to life. Great character voices. Both male and female.

Title: Besieged Author: Kevin Hearne Narrator: Luke Daniels Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 46 mins Language: English Release date: 07-11-17 Publisher: Random House Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3074 votes Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Short Stories & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: The ancient gods are alive and well in the modern world in this hilarious, action-packed collection of original short stories featuring Atticus O'Sullivan, the handsome, tattooed, 2,000-year-old Irishman with extraordinary magic powers from Kevin Hearne's New York Times best-selling Iron Druid Chronicles. Members Reviews: Better than a novella Any additional comments? This is one of my top all time favorite series. There are different stories told from different perspectives and a redo of The Demon Barker of Wheat Street by Luke Daniels (Thank the Gods!). Luke Daniels is spectacular with all the voices, it seems to me as if he truly enjoys this series and characters, especially Oberon. The stories are all interesting and add to the stories past and the current storyline. Listening to these stories makes me truly anxious to hear the final book. I pray that Hearne reconsiders and keeps writing IDC novels. Hearing Atticus and Owen swear put a smile on my face all day! This is a collection of short stories Any additional comments? I thought I had pre-purchased the next installment of the series, not a collection of short stories. I DID enjoy the short stories, just not what I expected. Disappointed I really enjoy this series and enjoy listening to Luke Daniels performances. I really didn't enjoy the short stories that jumped around. I was looking forward to the continuation of the story where it left off from Staked. This book feels, rushed, thrown together and is not up to the authors usual story telling. Parts of it are fun but I feel like this is the Phantom Menace of the series. A book I'll listen to/read once or twice but not one I'll come back to over and over again. What the heck happened? When I first read the Iron Druid Chronicles, I was so delighted that I preached to all my reading friends about it. I read the two first ones and listened to all the rest, including the novellas, on Audible. Hearne's storytelling and Daniels' thoughtful yet fun delivery were a match made in heaven. This book though... My god. Hearne is only rehashing his old jokes (poodles and sausages, over and over) and to say that Daniels is hamming it up would be the understatement of the century. Think Shatner on steroids reading to toddlers. What was a great series for both youths and adults now sounds like a nickelodeon production.r Are they bored? Just going through the motions? Whatever it is, the should seriously reassess their work. Both of them turned Oberon into Jar Jar Binks and the franchise into a throwaway trifle. Yawn... Getting really tired of these short story collections from the Iron Druid. Not likely to buy any others. Hugely disappointed that this was not a full novel.
