Concerned Mother (Caller)
this is what I want by the way, to send me an email. It's drlauractorlora.com and I thought this was an interesting letter to present to you because I think I believe in fact, I know this is an issue everywhere on the planet. Dr. Laura.com Sincerely, Concerned Mother I'm a longtime listener, 55 years old, mother of young male adults 28 and 24. With the exponential rise in social media and the public or social group sharing of all aspects of life, as well as the pressure to show you are successful and happy. I am curious about your guidance to young adults and couples on defining real success and real friends and moving away from social groups enough to have space for privacy for the couple. Also, how to balance social obligations with the need to rest and recharge. My older son is by all practical means successful, but is struggling with the feeling of letting everybody down, you know, sort of measuring up or letting everybody down, anxiety and depression. He and his wife are working through this and he recently sought help, I think a deep dive into or a whole book on this topic would be helpful for many young people. I have to bow secondary position to the parents. This is one of the reasons I tell you do not give your minor kids smartphones. You need them to have a phone so they can call and say I hurt my knee, come get me. There are phones that do just that. Making sure that kids are not spending their time with social media. Making sure the kids pay attention to their hobbies, pay attention to their obligations to their family. So if they're not spending all their time in some virtual place thinking that's how you measure life and your value. Supporting parents to make religion an important part of the family dynamic, which does have you extending yourself for the well being of others as opposed to using

others
Concerned Mother (Caller)
to maintain your well being. So between family dynamics, hobbies and sports, music, charitable work, religious connection, you're sort of asking me after the fact. So he's in counseling now to undo the last 20 something years of his life where that wasn't reinforced. The dynamics that I just spoke about were not reinforced. So asking me it's after the fact.
