One's situational, one's philosophical. Let's do the philosophical one. By the way, to send me an email, it's drlauractorlora.com straightforward okay, okay. Hi Dr. Laura, I was wondering what religion you practice. I know you converted to Orthodox Judaism, but I believe you no longer practice that religion. That's correct. I struggle with finding a religion, which is the reason for my question. I have conservative values, but each religion seems to have a non negotiable element. I'm interested in learning more about your experiences, observations, conclusions and I'm hoping you will address the subject on your show. Thank you for reading the email. I hope to hear more about your religious journey. If by chance you choose to read this email on the air, don't use my name. Okay? My religious journey. I'm not too interested in talking about it, but I love this statement. I have conservative values, but each religion seems to have a non negotiable element to it. That's absolutely correct. And there's no other way there could be different religions if there were not some non negotiable element that distinguished it from everything else. And I guess just like in relationships, you have to decide which non negotiable element you can tolerate for whatever else you find to be be of value. Minimally, you participating in religion every weekend or days in between brings you a community, A constant community. And even if the non negotiable thing is seriously annoying, the community of support and connection, picnics, prayers, social good deeds. Just about just about not all. But just about every religion has those elements. Not all.

So minimally it keeps you socially connected and involved. There are churches that do collecting food for the poor, delivering food to the elderly, doing things with kids who have serious problems. These are the beautiful things that most religions and engage in, Most specifically Christian religions, very focused on deeds to help people. So I agree, I concur and it is a fact whether I agree or not that all religions have a non negotiable element. Does it really impact your life? Does it make a difference in you, communing with the people in the particular church or synagogue or what have you? Does it keep you from joining with them and doing good deeds and helping each other at times of need? Probably not. So don't get too caught up because after all, think about how many subdivisions there are of Christianity. How many subdivisions are there? I don't even know. It's a huge number. And they all have something a little different in what's non negotiable. So you have to decide if that non negotiable really negatively impacts on your psyche, soul and life. And if not, just like in any other kind of relationship, certain things we just have to, yeah, accept. Unless of course they're dangerous or destructive. My number 1-800-375-2872. Podcast Summary: The Dr. Laura Podcast
Episode: Finding Your Religious Journey
Date: March 4, 2026
Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
In this episode, Dr. Laura Schlessinger addresses a listener’s question about her personal religious journey, the complexity of choosing a religion, and the inherent challenges involved in aligning one's values with organized faiths. With her characteristic candidness and empathy, Dr. Laura shares insights not only about her own experiences but also about broader themes—the purpose of religious communities, the inevitability of “non-negotiable” beliefs, and the importance of community connection over perfect doctrinal alignment.
“That’s absolutely correct. And there's no other way there could be different religions if there were not some non negotiable element that distinguished it from everything else.”
“…you have to decide which non negotiable element you can tolerate for whatever else you find to be of value.”
“…the community of support and connection, picnics, prayers, social good deeds. Just about—just about, not all—but just about every religion has those elements.”
“These are the beautiful things that most religions engage in, most specifically Christian religions, very focused on deeds to help people. So I agree, I concur and it is a fact whether I agree or not, that all religions have a non-negotiable element.”
“Think about how many subdivisions there are of Christianity... They all have something a little different in what's non-negotiable.”

“Each religion seems to have a non negotiable element to it. That's absolutely correct. And there's no other way there could be different religions if there were not some non negotiable element that distinguished it from everything else.” – Dr. Laura
On Practical Value [02:40]:
“Minimally, you participating in religion every weekend or days in between brings you a community, a constant community.”
On Community Efforts [06:51]:
“There are churches that do collecting food for the poor, delivering food to the elderly, doing things with kids who have serious problems. These are the beautiful things that most religions engage in, most specifically Christian religions, very focused on deeds to help people.”
On Religious Diversity [07:30]:
“Think about how many subdivisions there are of Christianity. How many subdivisions are there? I don't even know. It's a huge number. And they all have something a little different in what's non negotiable.”
On Acceptance [08:20]:
“So you have to decide if that non negotiable really negatively impacts on your psyche, soul, and life. And if not, just like in any other kind of relationship, certain things we just have to, yeah, accept. Unless of course they're dangerous or destructive.”
Dr. Laura’s central message in this episode is both realistic and compassionate: no religion’s tenets will ever fully align with each individual, but the benefits of community, support, and purpose often outweigh the frustrations of encountering “non-negotiable” beliefs. She encourages listeners to focus on the positive aspects—service, connection, support—while remaining mindful of personal boundaries and comfort. The choice, she reminds us, is as much about community and belonging as it is about theology.
