B
Hi Dr. Laura, thank you for calling my clinic.
A
Thank you. What's up?
B
Well, I'm significantly overweight and I've been letting myself go for like five or six years now. I mean, Covid was really hard on me and in addition to that, my family betrayed me, I feel and I'm having a really hard time letting it go.
A
You feel they betrayed you? That's not a fact. So you want to tell me what you're construing as betrayal?
B
Well, my sister and brother in law brought in an attorney to befriend my dad and they rewrote the will and everything without telling me.
A
And I'm sorry, was your father not of sound mind?
B
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
A
Okay, well then stop for a moment. It's illegal to try to make new contracts with somebody who's not of sound mind. So you ought to immediately have gotten an attorney and gone to court and demonstrated he was not of sound mind. To make this new contract will or what have you. So the onus was on you to act, not to sit back and say, poor me, but to act with an attorney to counter it.
B
I did consult some attorneys, and they told me that it would cost tens of thousands of dollars to fight it, and I'd probably lose because there's no.
A
You know what? I don't know who you spoke to, but if somebody is not of sound mind, all you need to do is go to court with an attorney and have your dad declared not of sound mind. That doesn't cost.
B
It doesn't cost to hire an attorney.
A
That doesn't cost that much just to go to court and say he's not of sound mind. Here's the proof. Then once you have that piece of paper, whatever your sibling does doesn't fly. Okay, so what does this have to do with being very overweight?
B
I don't have proof that he's not of sound mind. It's just.
A
Well, you can hire a psychiatrist. You can ask the court. The point I'm making is you could have been proactive to protect your father by going to the court and having the medical appropriate assessment of him to demonstrate he was not of sound mind.
B
I live 3,000 miles away. And it just.
A
You know, I knew you would come up with something. Because your personality style is to find excuses.
B
Okay.
A
And then you're frustrated, and then you're resentful, and then you eat to try to feel better. That's your pattern.
B
True.
A
Yeah. So were you hoping I could turn that around in this phone call?
B
I don't know. I was hoping you'd have something useful to say.
A
Well, in my opinion, it's useful to tell you that you have a pattern of behavior where you do not take steps, Then you turn it into you're a victim, and then you eat. So I think I was useful in pointing out the pattern. It's not an accident that you always have an excuse. It's your pattern. So it would take a lot of work on your part to break those habits, to start taking responsibility and acting proactively or reactively to situations, not considering yourself a victim, and then eating for healthy enjoyment and not for emotional despair. So you may want to go into some kind of counseling that may or may not help, depending upon your commitment, because all the work would be on you. It would be tough. Doable, but tough. So you'd have to stop being pissed off at everybody and everything and just be committed to make yourself be and do better.
B
Yes, I'm in 12 step programs overeaters Anonymous Working really hard I've been to lots of therapy.
A
As I said, you'd have to really be willing to work hard. Yours is not an easy situation because you have more half a century of habits. That's challenging. Absolutely.
B
Yeah, that's true.
A
So no, I don't have anything to say that's going to flip a switch here, but I do appreciate how incredibly difficult this path would be.
B
I appreciate that.
A
And if you're in eaters, this and all of that and it's not really resulting in you losing weight and being healthier and being less victimized in your own mind, then it's not all those opportunities. It's how rigid you are to stay where you are because you're familiar with where you are. See, therapy doesn't work. People work. Therapy presents insight and opportunities and moral support. But past that, the tough work is yours.
B
So mm, yeah.
A

B
Yeah, I've come to realize therapy doesn't often help because it just keeps me mired in my problems.
A
That's why a lot of times I tell people not to bother with the therapy, because every week for an hour, all you do is complain. Not you personally.
B
No, you're right. You're right. And so that's why I like Overeaters Anonymous, because they're at least giving me a to do list.
A
And do you do it consistently?
B
I'm working really hard.
A
Good. Now, what about physicality?
B
Well, I used to teach dance and I've started doing that again. I go to an exercise class three times a week.
A
Great.
B
I need to do more. But yeah, know what?
A
Three times a week is just fine.
B
Yeah.
A
I only work out pumping iron, lifting weights three times a week. Your body has to recover.
B
Yeah. Yeah, that's true.
A
Don't over push it. If you over push it, then you tend to give it up at some point because it just overwhelms your mind and body. You don't want to do that.
B
Yeah, and that's been my pattern, too, with all or nothing thinking.
A
No, you can't do that. No, see, that just. That's just. You might as well shoot yourself in the foot. Literally. No.
B
Yeah. And I have. And then I get down on myself when eventually I. Yeah. And it's just this cycle.
A
So let's just change to M for medium.
B
Okay.
A
There is no 100%. I don't do 100%. If I did, I'd probably be in traction. Yeah, think about it. Come on. No, medium and consistent. See, with medium, you can be consistent with outside support. I mean, I Have a trainer who trains me three times a week. He shows up, and I do it. That's why it's really important to have something like that or someone like that.
B
Mm.
A
Yeah.
B
That's why I go.
A
Walks in, and I can't say I don't feel like doing it, because actually, I have said that. He walks in, and I go, yeah, I don't feel like doing this today. He goes, did I ask? Do I care?
B
Do it right. Well, that's good.
A
Yeah.
B
Yeah. I think the food is more difficult for me. I have a tendency to just say I lie to myself. I'll procrastinate and be like, oh, I'll start tomorrow. Or it's just this one thing. And, yeah, I've been doing that for years.
A
And it's like, yeah, I suggest you take some naked pictures of yourself. You can cover up the important parts and put them all over your kitchen and look at those before you decide to wait till tomorrow. I'm serious. Dead serious. Serious.
B
I have a question, though. Is that, like, motivating myself with shame? Because that doesn't seem to.
A
I don't care what you want to call it. You look up, you look at yourself, and you go, how many years between now and dead? Is that how I want to look? I don't mind shame. I think it's a quality that has been ripped out of our culture, that it's shameful that we're ripping out shame. You should feel ashamed. You're smart, and you can make it happen, and you don't. You just told me you find excuses and eat whatever. You should feel ashamed of that you know better. You have people who care about you. You have people who are working with you on this, and then you pull this crap off. You should be ashamed. I have No. I think shame needs to be brought back in to just about everything. The fat you have is voluntary. You can unvoluntary it slowly but surely.
B
Okay?
A
So, yes, put the pictures up and feel ashamed and say, I don't want to do this for the next 10 years. And then you lose 10 pounds. Take new pictures. You lose 10 pounds. Take new pictures.
B
Okay.
A
You won't feel shame. You'll feel elated. Just have one of how you look today, and the rest follow your. Your path.
B
Mm. Okay.
A
Nothing wrong with shame, honey. We earn it.
B
Oh, wow. Okay.
A
We do something wrong, and we know it's wrong. We should be ashamed. Come on. Everybody should.
B
Last time, I motivated myself with shame, I got to my goal, and then I didn't know how to Eat. Like, I had been fasting and I
A
was, well, that's stupid. That's stupid. No, you don't fast. Go to a nutritionist and find out how you should do this. And you can eat yummy food. I have a lot of yummy food, but I eat very healthy. Do I want to just have fried everything? Damn straight, woman. I want everything fried. Everything. I want the spoon fried. Everything fried. But I avoid that. Every three weeks or so, I have something fried. The rest of the time, I eat really cool stuff that isn't fried. I mean, I know nothing beats fried chicken. Drumettes. Can you think of anything greasy fried chicken? I mean, I'm telling you, just thinking about it drives me crazy. But I don't want to hold the pictures in my kitchen. Yeah, the price is too great. And believe me, I don't believe in motivation. I have never believed in motivation. I have given lectures on the air. Forget this motivation crap, because it doesn't last. It has to be discipline. So it has to be. I get up in the morning and I just want to go back to bed. I don't want to work out, but I'm disciplined. I get up and do it not because I'm motivated, but because I'm disciplined. So you got to get to the point of discipline, because ultimately that's where it is. It's not in motivation. I am not motivated every day even to get on the air. There are some days like today, it's gorgeous out there. I just want to get a lemonade and put my feet up. Hell, put my feet in the pool and just relax. But I'm disciplined. I have an important responsibility to you. So it's not motivation, it's discipline. It's respect. Part of discipline is respect. You haven't been respecting you. You've been allowing yourself to be shamefully fat and undisciplined. That's terrible. You deserve better than that. So it starts with, I need to respect myself. That means I'm a woman of honor and responsibility. And self care.
B
Okay?
A
So forget motivation. Forget about it. I don't believe in it. I believe in shame. I do not believe in motivation,
B
okay?
A
And I don't consider having the pictures up there shaming you. You pulled that out because it's fat shaming. This shaming, all that crap has been going on. I got a guy who just would go on and look at porn on the way to work. He would stop his car and look at porn and masturbate to porn and all that. And he called me. He wanted it to stop. Okay. So I said, do you have pictures of your wife and all your kiddies? Yeah. I said, put them in the. What do you call the sun visor thing, drop it down and look at them and then decide whether or not you're going to turn on your little laptop. He called months later and it worked. That was not shaming. That was reminding him that he was better than this. He was a husband and a father and they were counting on him and respecting him, and he wanted to live up to that. Stopped doing it.
B
Yeah.
A
So I don't consider it shaming.
B
Yeah. I think I have a tendency to disassociate and just temporarily forget how bad it is because I want to.
A
You can pull that crap on the therapist you pay. You can't pull that on me. You never lose sight of what you're doing, ever. That's the stuff. When you see your therapist, they love to hear that dissociation. Oh, good. More depth, more years. You're paying for my car.
B
Yeah.
A
So, yeah, okay. Call me back, let me know how it's going. And remember, it won't be 100%. So don't wait to call me until something's 100%. No, if it's 5%, call me. I consider that a success.
