As people age, it's normal to ask what more they could be doing to take care of their health. It's important to be proactive, especially when it comes to your brain health. Don't wait for something to feel off before taking action. Make your next checkup count. Ask your doctor about your risk factors for dementia and a cognitive assessment. Well, I found this cute blog. It's cute. It says 10 warning signs that you might be a helicopter parent. So I'm just going to zap through the 10. You only let your child play on playgrounds with shredded rubber mulch too. The first thing you did when your fourth grader came home crying from school because her best friend called is to call the kid's mom to sort things out yourself. 3. You have found yourself up at 11pm rewriting your child's English essay because you know they could have done a better job if they hadn't been so tired. 4. Your 8 year old still has the training wheels on his bike. Not that you let him ride it that often anyway. The sidewalks are dangerous and they go too fast for you to keep up. 5. You have a bad back from stooping down and following your toddlers every step. 6. You get heart palpitations at the thought of letting your child on a field trip with their class. No, no. 7. Help out by preparing dinner or cleaning the house has never crossed your mind because knives are sharp and the cleaning fluids are dangerous. 8. As a Christmas gift, you gave your daycare a webcam so you could watch the daily happenings while you were at work and think you're actually a mother. 9. You and your son are having a meeting with the teacher and when she asks him a question, you answer for him. 10. Your child didn't get accepted to his preferred major at a college, so you call the chair of the department to negotiate for an exception. All of this makes you a lousy parent. Can I be blunt? She doesn't say that in her blog. By the way, the blog is written by Melinda Carson. She doesn't say that. I say it all. That makes you a lousy parent because ultimately it's not about the well being of your child, it's about you. Now, I think you should be a shoulder to cry on, an actively listening coach through some situations. But they're the one that have to take the risks, the consequences, and face the scary things.
