3, 2, 1 mission. Get ready for an adventure of magnificent proportion.
Mindy Thomas
I don't know what you've been told. We're in a golden age. So discoveries that are jumping off the page. While in the world wild in the world. While in the world wild in the world.
Dennis
Houston.
Mindy Thomas
Okay, I need one tuna rare, two mushy tuna bowls, three tuna bites, and a side order of catnip, stat. Yes, chef.
Dennis
Cindy, table 23 is still waiting on their sloppy tuna.
Mindy Thomas
It'll be out in a second.
Dennis
And the sleigh cats are going wild out here. They keep knocking the salt and pepper shakers onto the floor with their little paws. Ah, Ms. Dixon, behave yourself.
Mindy Thomas
Give them one of those little mouse toys to distract them. The food's almost ready.
Dennis
Okay, May I offer a complimentary mouse toy for the table steak? No, I sent no refills on the umami overload.
Guy Raz
What's going on in here?
Dennis
Oh, hey, Guy Raz.
Mindy Thomas
Guy Razz here. Think quick. Get that apron on, Guy Raz. We got some hungry cats to feed.
Guy Raz
Mindy, what in the world is going on in here?
Mindy Thomas
What does it look like?
Guy Raz
It looks like you're running some sort of diner restaurant for cats.
Mindy Thomas
You got it, Guy Raz. Now, come on. You can worry about clocking in later. Right now, I need some help.
Dennis
Mindy, do we have the mushy tuna order for table 13?
Mindy Thomas
Oh, right here. Order up.
Dennis
So stinky.
Mindy Thomas
Just run the plates, Dennis.
Guy Raz
Is it really just you, Dennis, and Reggie running this whole operation?
Mindy Thomas
Ooh, I got the whole neighborhood here, Guy Raz. I got Fingerling working as the mater d Dennis running tables, and grandma G force is making this drink she invented called the umami overload.
Guy Raz
Umami overload?
Mindy Thomas
Yeah. These cats are going bonker balls for this stuff. It's the whole reason I opened up tuna time in the first place.
Guy Raz
Tuna time?
Mindy Thomas
Oh, yeah, that's the name of this diner.
Guy Raz
I see. And the whole reason you opened it up was because of a drink grandma GeForce invented called umami overload.
Mindy Thomas
Egg actoritos. Guy Raz. Now, I'll tell you about it as we cook, but right now I need your help.
Guy Raz
All right, Mindy, just let me tie up my apron at least.
Mindy Thomas
Reggie, where are we at with that sloppy tuna? Excellent.
Guy Raz
Look at all these orders you have coming through, Mindy. Tuna sal, tuna tartare, tuna macaroni.
Mindy Thomas
I'm just giving the people what they want, Guy Raz. And by people, I mean cats.
Guy Raz
Do you have anything other than tuna on the menu?
Mindy Thomas
No, why would I?
Guy Raz
Well, to add a little bit of variety maybe.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, but that's the thing, Guy Raz. These cats don't want variety, they want tuna. It's scientifically proven.
Guy Raz
Scientifically proven?
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, I read about it in a new study in the journal Chemical Senses.
Guy Raz
Oh, that's one of my favorite chemistry related scientific journals.
Mindy Thomas
Mine too. Anywho, you know, it's been known for a while that cats love the smell and taste of tuna.
Guy Raz
You don't have to remind me. Mindy, remember when I brought that tuna salad to your last cookout? Your sleigh cats went crazy for it.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, I remember.
Dennis
Mindy, I'm here.
Mindy Thomas
Hey, Rozzy. Just come around with the back. Just giving sleigh cats their annual bubble bath.
Guy Raz
Ow.
Mindy Thomas
Ooh.
Dennis
Okay.
Guy Raz
I brought tuna salad for the cookout. I hope that's okay.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, why did you say that? Get off of me. Get off of me. Get back here, sleigh cat. Oh, yeah, that was not pretty.
Guy Raz
You're telling me.
Mindy Thomas
Well, now these researchers know why my sleigh cats went so bonker balls for your tuna salad.
Guy Raz
And why is that?
Mindy Thomas
Well, it has a little something to do with something called umami.
Guy Raz
Of course. Umami, one of the five categories of taste.
Mindy Thomas
That's right. Along with sweetness, bitterness, sourness and saltiness.
Guy Raz
And umami is that sort of meaty, savory sort of taste that we get when eating something like a delicious hearty broth?
Mindy Thomas
Exactly.
Guy Raz
Oh, and I forgot, I have a fun fact, Mindy.
Mindy Thomas
I love fun facts.
Guy Raz
Did you know that umami in Japanese means essence of deliciousness?
Mindy Thomas
I did not know that, but it dolphinitely makes sense. Our cat customers can't get enough of this stuff. Look at em, huh?
Guy Raz
And so wait a minute. This tuna is packed full of umami and that's why cats love it?
Mindy Thomas
Well, that's half the reason, Guy Raz. Ooh, looks like our order of sloppy tuna is up. Thanks, Reg. And unfortunately, Dennis is nowhere to be seen. Guy Raz, it looks like we're gonna have to run this one ourselves. Come on, get your skates on my what? Your skates. Your roller skates. Here.
Guy Raz
What in the. Mindy, these are just slippers with some office chair wheels attached to the bottom.
Mindy Thomas
I know. Can you believe it? I made them myself.
Guy Raz
Oh, I can believe it, Mindy.
Mindy Thomas
Now, come on, we got some tuna to deliver to the table.
Guy Raz
Fine. Okay, ready?
Mindy Thomas
Follow me. Skate, skate, skate, skate, skate, skate, skate.
Guy Raz
Whoa, this place is packed.
Mindy Thomas
You're telling me. Oh, look, there's Dennis. Hey, Dennis.
Listener Callers
What?
Mindy Thomas
We got an order of sloppy tuna ready to go. What's going on?
Dennis
I don't know. Fingerling keeps letting cats in even though we're out of tables.
Mindy Thomas
Table for nine. Yeah, I'm sure we can squeeze you in somewhere. Just go talk to that feller over there.
Dennis
Tommy, no.
Mindy Thomas
What's that feller?
Dennis
I need backup. Where's Grandma G Force? G Force.
Mindy Thomas
Well, who wants the G Force special? The G Force special?
Dennis
No Grandma G Force. No more specials.
Mindy Thomas
It goes a little something like this. My China. Did she just rip the tablecloth with everything on it off the table?
Dennis
Huh.
Listener Callers
Well, that's not good. I thought all the plates and glasses
Mindy Thomas
would stay in place.
Listener Callers
My bad.
Guy Raz
Ugh.
Mindy Thomas
Dennis, can you clean this up?
Dennis
What? Me? Why me?
Mindy Thomas
Because I said so, Grandma G Force. Just keep making more of those umami overload drinks. People keep asking for them. Don't tell me what to do. Okay, what table are we going to, Guy Raz?
Guy Raz
What?
Mindy Thomas
It should say it right there on the ticket that you're holding.
Guy Raz
Uh, let's see here. Oh, table 14.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, table 14. Just over here. Follow me. Skate, skate.
Guy Raz
Slow down, Mindy. I'm still getting the hang of my slipper skates.
Mindy Thomas
All right. Howdy there, gang. Now, who ordered the sloppy tuna? Okay, okay, one at a time. Hey, one at a time. Okay, so we're all gonna share. Great. Yeah, because sharing is caring. I'll just. And pop it down in the middle there. Those tuna bites should be coming right out.
Guy Raz
Hi there. Who ordered the.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, already done it. Guy Raz. Let's head back to the kitchen.
Guy Raz
Okay, follow me.
Mindy Thomas
Ski, ski, ski, ski, ski, ski, ski. Uh oh, Benji, I can't stop. You okay there, buddy?
Guy Raz
Yeah, I think I'll.
Dennis
Ooh, Liv.
Mindy Thomas
Here, let me help you up. Reggie, pass me one of those frozen tuna steaks for Guy Raz's head. Got it.
Listener Callers
There you go.
Mindy Thomas
Guy Razzie, put this one on your noggin there. Uh huh. Okay, let's see here. Three more mushy tunas. Reggie, three more mushy tunas, stat.
Guy Raz
So, Mindy, why are These cats, so cuckoo for umami.
Mindy Thomas
Well, these researchers think it might be because of their taste receptors.
Guy Raz
Their taste receptors? You mean those little cells on our tongues that help us determine what different foods taste like?
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, see, just like us humans, cats get a umami boost when they eat stuff like tuna.
Dennis
Huh.
Guy Raz
Well, how?
Mindy Thomas
Well, in our human mouths, the umami taste is boosted by something called nucleotides.
Guy Raz
Uh huh.
Mindy Thomas
And cats also get this umami flavor boost when they get it from something called amino acids.
Guy Raz
Aha. But it works in the same way?
Mindy Thomas
Well, basically, see, both humans and cats get an enhanced experience when eating umami loaded foods.
Guy Raz
Huh, you don't say.
Mindy Thomas
Now here, help me plate up these mushy tunas.
Guy Raz
Oh, sure. What do you need?
Mindy Thomas
Just hold these bowls.
Guy Raz
Okay.
Mindy Thomas
Slop, slop, slop, slop. You know, Guy Raz, one of the drinks that Grandma G Force is serving tonight is taken directly from the study in that journal.
Guy Raz
Oh yeah? Which one?
Mindy Thomas
The umami overload. See, to determine just how tasty tuna is to these cats, the researchers placed the chemicals that make the umami taste into different bowls of water. Okay, the first bowl had just a little umami in it. The second bowl had more, and the third had even more until the last one was overloaded with umami.
Guy Raz
Huh. And what happened next?
Mindy Thomas
Well, then they brought in some cats to see which umami bowl was their favorite.
Guy Raz
And if cats love umami as much as I do, I'm guessing the bowl that was overloaded with umami was the favorite.
Mindy Thomas
You know it. 25 out of 25 cats preferred the umami overload. The bowl with the most umami chemicals in it. Which is basically what Grandma GeForce's drink is. Just a bowl of water with some umami chemicals in it.
Guy Raz
Hey, just giving the people what they want.
Mindy Thomas
And by people, you mean cats?
Guy Raz
Exactly.
Mindy Thomas
All right, three sloppy tunas ready to run.
Dennis
Coming, Mindy.
Guy Raz
So, Mindy, what do these researchers want to do with these findings?
Mindy Thomas
Well, Guy Raz, they're hoping that they can use this information to make more tasty cat food. Or more importantly, more tasty medicine for cats.
Guy Raz
Medicine?
Mindy Thomas
Yeah. Have you ever seen me trying to get the sleigh cats to take their delousing medication? It is not a pretty sight.
Guy Raz
Ah, but if it came with an umami overload, they might be more willing to eat it all up.
Mindy Thomas
That's the plan. Hey, where is Dennis?
Dennis
Mindy.
Mindy Thomas
Mindy, Dennis, come on, you got three mushy tunas ready to go. What are you waiting for? Mindy and Reggie's Almost done with that rare tuna, so stand by.
Dennis
Mindy, table 23 is asking for a dessert menu. I told them we don't have a dessert menu. They said, why not? And I said, because cats can't taste sweetness.
Guy Raz
Wait, is that true?
Mindy Thomas
Oh, yeah. And they're not super great about tasting bitterness either.
Dennis
And they're not happy about it. They started hissing and going, and now they want to speak to the manager.
Mindy Thomas
Manager? Who's the manager?
Guy Raz
Uh, Mindy, I think that might be you.
Mindy Thomas
Ugh, just what I need. Okay, I'll talk to them. Where are they sitting?
Dennis
Uh, table 13. No, wait, table 12. No, wait, table 13.
Mindy Thomas
Are you sure?
Dennis
Uh, yes. I remember because it's the same number of lives that a cat has.
Guy Raz
Dennis, the phrase is cats have nine lives.
Dennis
Oh, then it's table nine.
Mindy Thomas
Okay, come on, guy. Raz, follow me.
Guy Raz
Right behind you, Mindy.
Mindy Thomas
Skate, skate, skate, skate, skate, skate, skate. Okay, table nine. Let's see. Ah, there it is. Hey, wait a minute. Debbie, Donna, Pam, Ms. Dixon, Carol, Cheryl, Janice, and Steve.
Guy Raz
It's all your sleigh cats.
Dennis
Mindy. Surprise. Ooh, look, the sleigh cats have a sign.
Guy Raz
Congratulations on the grand opening of your tuna themed restaurant. Hope you are feline. Fine.
Mindy Thomas
You cats did this for me? This is the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me.
Dennis
It is?
Guy Raz
Wait, when did your sleigh cats learn how to write?
Mindy Thomas
Come here, you cats. Big hugs.
Dennis
Ow.
Mindy Thomas
Okay, okay, you're scratching me. Oh, that hurts. Okay, stop. You're hissing in my ear. Hooray.
Dennis
Let's celebrate.

Podcast: Wow in the World
Date: July 27, 2026
Hosts: Mindy Thomas & Guy Raz
Episode Length: ~21 minutes
This fun-filled episode of Wow in the World dives into a fascinating new study on why cats are obsessed with the taste of tuna—and, more specifically, savory (umami) flavors. Using their signature blend of humor, narrative hijinks, and clear scientific explanations, Mindy and Guy Raz run an imaginary cat diner, “Tuna Time”, to explore how cats’ taste buds work, how umami flavor is detected, and what these discoveries mean for felines everywhere. The episode also discusses how this research could help make more palatable cat foods and medicines.
