All right, everybody. So we have another preview and I'm extremely, extremely excited for this. Not only because of the fact that I get to represent someone new, but I get to represent some extremely high quality and elite cattle. Mr. Clay Morrison decided to entrust us to represent him here on Empower your. He has a sale coming up that you can find on Steer Bidder. It happens all on March 8th. We're extremely excited to talk about and go through all the lots with him. Mr. Clay, if you'd like to introduce yourself and let the listeners know who exactly you are, what the primary goal is there at Morrison Livestock, then after that we can run through all the lots.
B
Yeah, for sure. Clay Morrison, along with my wife Taylor and our three daughters, we run Morrison Livestock here on the south side of Lubbock. We've been having this March sale for, oh, probably seven or eight years at this point. Our main focus is probably Charlay Slick shearing cattle, if you wanted to get real specific. But we tend to have a little bit of everything and think the sale is pretty diverse in what we're offering and highlights what we're best at, but shows a little diversity too.
A
One will be the one to kick it off and he's an in guy we trust out of the Calucall 7108. He's an out there over headliner. This one runs at a Charolais or aoc. I think this one's really dense haired. I think this one's muscle shape is incredible to be a slick. But like I said before, I think his hair is awesome as well. I think he's a real nice dual purpose calf that's extremely proportional and balanced from the side and his feet and legs are just incredible in my mind, especially watching him video talking about what the 12 o' clock end point looks like for this calf and how you think he ends up and what he needs to do to get to that point.
B
Yeah, yeah, I appreciate you saying that about him. I think that cow is really the driving factor in this deal. She's been really good for us. Last year she raised our high selling steer and our high selling heifer. He's got a flush mate that we're going to leave a bull this time. It's just a mating that we think a lot of and this calf represents it really well. I think end point wise, he's pretty versatile. If you want him to be a haired calf, he's got the hair to do it. He'd probably land somewhere in the middles, you know, depending on what part of the world. You're taking him probably a 6 through 8 at Fort Worth. He had a flushmate brother that made the sale this year at Fort Worth. He's definitely got the capability to do that and I like him probably best if I was going to keep him and show him to take him to Houston. But a calf that's got a lot of versatile end points to him and could do a lot of good for any family.
A
Yes, sir. Well, lot two is an actual full sib to him and I actually think that this is the slick's year brother as well. I think that his foot quality and the wear it the big square feet to be highlighted on the turf, I think is would be extremely awesome. I think that as a long necked, tall shouldered steer that's bold ribbed and level hipped, I think that all needs to be extremely highlighted there. As a slick calf, I could be wrong, but I'd like to know your thoughts and what you think as well.
B
Yeah, I would agree with that. I mean that thing walks around on dinner plates for feet and size wise, I mean, I think he could make it to turf. You know, unfortunately, San Antonio is starting to turn into a little bit of just a. A holdover show. But as far as Fallborns go, I think he's one that you could get to the size and weight to be competitive and maturity San Antonio or you just kind of slow play him into Houston. I think he could do either well. But yeah, I think he's definitely destined to be slicked off and be competitive at either way.
A
Lot three is next and you switch it up a little bit, you got to burst your bubble out of it, get you some 51 female. This is a shorthorn steer. I'm confident in this thing classifying there at Fort Worth. I think he's got the hair quality to give him a huge run at it. I think that that's an extremely proportional, burly made calf that has all the right pieces to get the pull from. What Frank Ward has told us there off the post game when we did it. What do you think?
B
Yeah, yeah. I'm a listener too, so I've. I heard the post game and I think this one fits in really well as far as just looking clubby and having a back leg that you can fit up and look real cool for him. He's a calf that I think his color pattern is really interesting and neat looking. I think it'll get you noticed real quick and then he's got the quality to keep him interested. A calf that I think is probably more of a middleweight size and maturity wise. And then if you needed to slick him, he's plenty, plenty stout enough to do that. He's got plenty of square back shape and, and deep twist and stuff. If you wanted to slick him off, I think he could be either way. But I think if you took him to Fort Worth in the middles, there's a good chance you're not bringing him home.
A
Well, lot four will be next. This will be an In God We Trust out of an 82, 46 female. It's a banshee over Steiner. And in my mind, if this thing had just a little more sheath, I think that'd be an incredible abc, but unfortunately it's a little small. But I think you class it like you say Lemmy or aoc. I think his feet and legs are incredible. I think he's a little bit on the green side, but I don't think that differs from his quality at all. I think that he's extremely proportional level in his lines and his shoulder angle is incredible.
B
Yeah, I think he's one that a lot of guys have been interested in if that, that character is quite enough to push him over the edge. And if you're a gambler, it might be. You know, I think that calf either way is high quality. He's really, really good in his lines. He's really good on his feet and legs. And he's one that is probably. Even though we only pictured a week ago, I think he's already putting on a bunch of weight. He's a calf that is just going to get every better every day for you. And his color is really good. There's been. That cow has actually had sister that sold some of our high sellers last year. And those things all slicked off with, you know, really good dark color. And I think they are the kind that really attract a lot of attention when they're slicked off just based on their color and their quality. And I think he'll be about the same.
A
Well, a full sib is going to be next. Lot five, and this is a silver calf that reads to be an awesome slicking calf. I think he's got incredible hair to play with over the summer and fall. But the read that I get just in terms of his back shape, the width of his pin set and the, the shape that he has to his lower leg and stifle, I think it should extremely be fun to look at there at San Antonio Houston.
B
Yeah, I think the, the end point for him is to slick, but like you said, he's got really good hair quality, so he'll be fun to jackpot if you've got a really competitive county show. I think he'd be one that could get big and burly and hairy for one of those before you slick him off and maybe try to go get you a little paycheck. A calf that we think a lot of and should have a good bit of success in his lifetime, I would think.
A
Well, lot six would be next. This will be a perfection over a 1003 female, which is a Shazam. Starburst in my mind. That's a real good haired calf that's extremely burly about his body shape. That's a big hip steer that utilizes his hind leg incredibly. I think he's a very nice dual purpose calf. What do you think?
B
Yeah, I think his. His frame score is probably a career lightweight, but we've had really good luck in the lightweight shorthorns in the past. We had the class winner a few years back and then a third the year before that. This thing's mom was actually a flushmate to the one that was third. I think he's one that can look really mature and ready to roll as a lightweight shorthorn. And that's a class that seems to be a little bit of a soft spot some years. I think he's one that could go grab a brand in there or if you wanted to slow play him and stretch him out. He's definitely got a slick, sheer muscle shape to him. So I think you could get him, you know, a lightweight by San Antonio or even potentially a middleweight by Houston. And one that is ready to rock and roll at that point.
A
Yes, Sir. Well, Lot 7 will be next and this will actually be a full Sid to 4 and 5 that we just previously talked about. Lemmy or AOC. His color pattern and color type is incredible. I love his hair coat. I think that this thing is a little on the greener side, but I think if you can get him to the right maturity pattern, I think this thing slicked off on the green chips will be extremely hammer.
B
Yeah, we went about six months this winter without any rain. So, you know, a lot of our stuff's a little skinnier than it normally we'd like to have at this time of year. And this one's for sure. One that's eaten a lot of that. But a calf that I think will get better for you every day. I think he'll have a good endpoint at a, at a mature weight size wise, and he'll really body down for you in the near future. I think he's just one that's a little bit behind at the moment. But like you said, his, his hair quality and his hair color and his feet and legs are all just right and you just got to push him and get him there. And all of a sudden I think a guy's got a better calf than he thought he did at the beginning.
A
Well, lot eight will be next. This will be a monopoly red bird. This is a September born calf. In my mind. This black cross is extremely proportional. He utilizes his hind leg really well. I love his hair coat and how dense his hair is. I think this thing is extremely dual purpose as well. I think that he can make a run in the middleweights there at Fort Worth. But I also, this calf could slick off really well at either slick show.
B
Yeah, I think, you know, there's been guys who's asked maybe if he's got enough head character and stuff to go Angus and I think if you're a gambler it's worth a shot. But even if, if that's not going to make, I think he's a really good 3, 4, 5, 6 somewhere in there depending on, you know, how they grow in your part of the world. And then a calf that's got plenty underneath to go slick him off if you wanted to and you know, go try to find a sailhole in those lighter weight black cross or, or try the Angus deal again, you know, with very little risk at a slick show with the black crosses to land in. So a cafe I think got a lot of avenues to try to get a brand down the road.
A
So the cafe is polled?
B
Yes. He's smooth polled and short headed and kind of got the old original Monopoly look to him. So I think there's, there's potential there for that. You know, I'm not saying.
A
I definitely say that things are rolling where they weren't for this year. You better take that gamble for sure.
B
Yeah, it didn't seem to have too much downside if they, unless they change their mind and try to go a lot more aggressive next year.
A
But. Right, right. Well, lot nine will be next. This will be another full sib again to 7, 4 and 5. This steer is extremely nice in my mind. Just as proportional, just as good in terms of his feet and legs, the way he utilizes his lower joints again just needs time and feet. In my mind, I think his hair quality is right on. I think he could be an awesome Fort Worth calf again with the right time. Different also depending where he ends up in the state of Texas if he does. But just have to see. I think he could slick off real well too.
B
Yeah, this is the first time we flushed that cow. Her AI in God we trust calf last year was fourth place in Class 5 at Fort Worth. And you know, reminds me a lot of this one had, this one had the best hair quality of any of the flush this time. And he's one that, you know, had enough hair where he was pretty, pretty hot all winter. You know, I think we had maybe the hottest recorded winter in history or something along those lines. It sure felt like it. So he's one that, you know, bore the brunt of that this winter and you know, with us not having very good wheat this time, I think that's a calf that's going to get real good for someone and one that I think you'll really be proud of further down the road.
A
Yes, sir, for sure. Well, lot 10 will be next and in my mind this is a one for all over a Garth you ask Angus question mark. He's got a little bit of white on his flank, but I'm assuming that he's smooth pulled.
B
He is. He's got a good, good smooth head, short fat head and you know, his hair is not super th looking. You know, he's one that we're shooting for a main heifer with and instead we got maybe a Angus classifying steer. But I think that thing's feet and leg quality is so good and you can mash on him so hard. I think he'll be good either way. But I, I do like his odds to make an Angus calf down the road.
A
Lot 11 will be next. This will be a king of kings over a 9162 female which is a gitchesome over 28. Talk to me about his pedigree, kind of what that female has done for you. And this is an extremely burly steer in my mind. I think he's got a lot of mass and dimension. I think he utilizes his feet and legs the right way for sure.
B
Yeah, I think this is a, the first flush out of that cow and I mean if you come and see him, she's one of the most impressive females you'll see. We've actually sold a full sib dur in the past that we're partners on with Barry Ryman up in South Dakota and the sister raised his second high seller in his fall sale this time. That was a yellow in God that I think landed in Texas somewhere. But this, this calf's really good. He's kind of the wrong color and and hair coat to get everyone the most excited this weekend. But I think if a guy pays attention down the road and watches these majors, it seems like, you know, as long as you're not in that 1400 pound range, as far as like the AOCs or the Charolais go, those are kind of classes that you can go in and get a sail hole. Even though people are a little, a little spooked to be a middleweight charolay or a Class 3 AOC, I think those are spots where, you know, there is some room to maneuver in there. And I think this calf, once you peel them off, will be able to run with the best of them in those classes.
A
Yes, sir. Well, I always know that there's somewhat of a sleeper in a sale, and I think that's a perfect representation. A lot 12. This will be a full sieve to lot 6 in my mind. It doesn't get any better build built. I think this calf has the feet and legs that can withhold any type of pushing to get him to the right maturity pattern to slick off. Well, I think this calf's build is incredible. I don't know what you think.
B
I know I'd agree with that. So this calf is actually. If you got me on Snapchat, you probably would have seen him. He's the biggest calf I've ever had. We weighed him when he was three or four hours old and he's 160 pounder, and so he kind of took a while to get the ball rolling, but he's ready to go now. And he's one that, like you said, is just built so good that I think you can just mash on him. I think you can get him to a good fighting weight pretty early. You know, maybe a San Antonio size shorthorn, or if not, if maybe you're a little further south or something, you want to slow play him. I think he'd make a real, real good slicking one for Houston. But a calf that, like you said, is built so good that you can just really mash on him and get him there.
A
I think it's a different color. Same story in Lot 13 for sure. I think his build so good, I think you can just mash on him and get him to the right point. It's 12 o', clock, but I think either they're being at Fort Worth as a lightweight in a Division 1, or just waiting on him and letting him cook all the way to Houston or Austin. I think either way, I think his structure can withhold that and I think that he could definitely be a contention somewhere.
B
Yeah, no, I agree that that calf is out of a really good cow. She's one that I would have bought right when I got out of college. I'm getting a few years on me now, so that makes her about a 14 year old cow. And you know, she kind of milked like one this round. So that calf didn't have the best, best start this fall, but one that is built really cool I think is really nice in every aspect. There's no holes in him. He's puppy dog gentle. I think, you know, if he can find a little boy or girl that needs a first or second year calf to be their best friend, I think he's, he's right down that lane and he's not giving up any quality too. I think he's one that, you know, you get him going and I think. Think you're going to brand him either haired or slicked in one of them lighter weight classes.
A
Yes, sir. Well, 14's next and this will actually be a full sib to 11. And this calf, in my mind he's not the craziest haired thing in the world, but I, he actually reads as an awesome slick calf to me. The length of neck that he has, the back shape that he offers, his body shape, the length of hip and the levelness of it, and the way that he's square footed and utilizes his lower joints, I think the calf is going to be an extremely nice slick calf there at Houston or Austin.
B
Yeah, for a calf that's somewhere on the, the rat tail spectrum, he's got pretty darn good hair. But a calf that's got a, got a really bendy back leg, you know, really good flexibility to his skeleton and a calf that holds himself together really well in the move. When you get your hands on him, he's got a good groove down his back, he's got a good pin set to him. Just one that I think, you know, probably look a little bit more put together without the hair, but you know, a calf that I think is really good down the road.
A
Well, that concludes our sale preview. Is there anything else that you'd like to tack on for the listeners to know before we get off?
B
Yeah, yeah, I'll just say that, you know, I think we're pretty easy to work with. I think we're pretty talented at what we do, you know, as far as feeding advice, trimming feet, clipping calves, getting them ready at shows. I'd put us up there with most anyone else. As far as getting them across, we're probably not as good at self promotion and marketing as others. So, you know, maybe not everyone knows our name, but I think we're damn good at what we do and we'd love to get some of these families in and help them reach their goals. As far as post sale, we've had pretty good luck with getting these things shipped all over the country in a pretty timely manner. We know that everyone's headed to Houston. We've. We've kept these things on feed a lot until guys get back from Houston. That's no big deal. Just let us know what your plan is if you get one bought. Yeah, we're looking forward to working with some new and old customers and getting a new set of calves rolling.
A
Absolutely. Yes, sir. Well, you can find the sale on steer bidder. It happens on March 8th. We're all real excited. Clay's info is on there. So if we didn't answer any of your questions in the preview, I'm sure he'd be grateful to pick up the phone and talk to you about the cattle. So with that said, I'm awfully grateful for the opportunity. Can't wait for the future and our relationship moving forward. Very excited to be a part of Morrison livestock in some way, shape and form. So with all this said, can't wait to see how the sale goes. This is what it's all about. Empowerment's here. We'll see you all next time.
