We got a really, really neat opportunity here. We've had Mr. Garth Simpson on before. We did their awesome embryo meltdown sale, but now we got them back with their sale that they got there on March 8th. Found on steer Bidder. Their ladies and gentlemen sale. There's a lot of quality in this sale. It's really deep. I'm very happy that I get to represent them once again. So garth and we, Mr. David Bridges with us as well. So he's going to be talking about the cattle with us. So both y' all want to introduce yourselves again and we'll just dive into the lots after that.
B
Yeah, sounds good. Thanks for having us again west and said earlier. I'm Garth Simpson here with Ridgeland Farms. We have our ladies and gentlemen sale coming up on March 8th on steer bidder. And we've got David here with us today.
C
Hey, everybody. I'm David Bridges, originally from Georgia. Been working with Garth now for about a little over a year. Our second sale season together. And I've always kind of had a vision for this sale. I came off a rock song I always like to listen to, ladies and gentlemen and just always thought of having an elite steer cell with a couple donor prospects in it. So we got a group together and.
B
Awesome.
C
When they were selling steer bidder March 8th.
A
Perfect. Well, you started off with a silver calf in Lot 1. He's a golden ticket here. I am Monopoly. Obviously y' all got current weights up there, which is awesome. I think that's always a good perspective to have for anybody that's interested on the cattle. But this thing reads to me like an extremely good dual purpose calf. I mean, in terms of his back shape, the size of his hip, and the way he utilizes his iron leg, but still offering an awesome silhouette. I think he's a great dual purpose calf. But honestly, with as dense haired as he looks to be, could be a real awesome contender there at Fort Worth. What do y' all think one is?
B
I mean, just fun to look at. Good livestock. Awesome. Bill. David actually found this one from one of our friends up in Michigan. And man, this calf is wherever you want to take him. You know, anywhere haired show all across the country. Slick show. I mean, he's going to be a competitive calf, whatever guy decides he wants to do with him. But I know David likes that calf quite a bit, so I'll let him talk on him.
C
I don't really know if I've ever seen a calf that like most of these things, they're bred to be show steers, but this One, he was born to be a show steer. I've never seen one with such big feet and legs and so loose constructed. I haven't seen one just moves around, gets out and goes like he does in a while. I mean, if you want to win, I'd probably tie in pretty hard. Denver, Fort Worth. He's going to be a player there for sure.
A
Well then lot two's next. He's a perfection shortcake, obviously. Garth, we've talked about that shortcake cow before. This one obviously shorthorn being a full sid to the 2025 Reserve Grand Reserve grand champion shorthorn steer there at Houston. But this one's got the Fort Worth hair. He's got the big shag. It reads to be dense haired. I love the way he utilizes his iron leg. He's soft jointed, big footed. I love his silhouette from the side. Where do y' all think he probably needs to end up? Obviously he's easy classifying in yalls minds. So could probably get into the shorthorns for fair ease there at Fort Worth.
B
Yeah, I think this one's a Fort Worth shorthorn all the way. I love this calf's build. Sat and watched the whole shorthorn breed this year there and I think this one's very competitive at Fort Worth next year. Probably, you know, middle to heavies. I don't know where he's going to end up quite yet, but I mean just the flexibility and build and everything that this calf brings to the table for a shorthorn. I like this one quite a bit for Fort Worth next year.
C
Kind of on the same page with G on that one. And I mean cap, they don't really do anything wrong at all. And if you got a little kid that you want to get excited about showing. Here you go. Calm, gentle, just ready to go.
A
Well then lock three is next. He's a here I am maternal maid. A mating that has done a lot of good for a lot of different firms. Exotic black cross. He's got a little chrome there on his flank and obviously on his legs there and tail. So I think that stands out just a little bit. This one reads to be awesome haired, long necked, real proportional, still squishy, big footed. Where do y' all think he needs to end up? What do you think 12 o' clock looks like for him?
B
I think heavyweights. Fort Worth, Georgia, Denver, wherever. Guy want to take this one, you know, just big bone, huge legged, awesome hair, good built calf. Has a lot of presence to him. Flashy. I mean, nobody's going to miss him when he walks in the ring, definitely. I see him being a heavyweight though, wherever guy wants to take him from there. Slicks if a guy wants him to. Just going to be a big bone, big framed heavyweight kind of calf. When it's all said and done, he's
C
just kind of a cafe. You kind of want to put him in that category is that lot one is just Chopin. He's arrogant as presence. You can walk all over this place and you're going to see them two out there in a pen. And we haven't touched on the subject yet of fat legged being the term used for Fort Worth this year. He definitely got that. He's good attitude, dense red meat, just good showcase.
A
Awesome. Well then lot four is next. We got an Angus prospect. From what y' all got the description on, he's a 1Oak monopoly Angus. Smooth polled, small ears that sit, the right waist. Obviously we think that he's got a shot to classify with way things went there at Fort Worth this year, I think for sure. Absolutely. The big hair with the big soft hind leg. Love his proportions, love his presence from the side and he moves like a cat in the video. What do y' all think?
B
I love this calf and you know, I guess if you're not worried about classifying, you're probably not good enough. I'm not a classifier. You know what a guy wants to do with him. I sure think he'd be competitive wherever a guy wants to take him. And yeah, I agree. Try him in the Angus because that's a real nice Angus. If he gets in.
C
Yeah, for sure. If he gets an Angus, he's going to do something there. If you don't, you're class five, six in that area. I think this calf, he was here and I just always kind of turned my head at him. He just looked like a big hairy blob. And then we started clipping on him and I was like, I think we got something here with this one. He's got a lot of presence to him and just sound pretty smooth everywhere. You don't really pick on the calf much. I think he's real fun.
A
If he gets an Angus, well, lot five's next. He's a champ, which is a one oak fat Tina on a cow. That's whiskey over heat wave. This one is a little chromed up as well. Reads to be like a moderate, easy feeding steer. That's just good calf, no holes, still functional on the mo. On the move. Long necked, big hips. Reads to have a big back in him. I think this thing as a slick steer probably there at San Antonio is probably his best in point. What do y' all think?
B
Yeah, I think like middleweight Fort Worth, he's got the hair to go there for. Guy slicks him, you know, definitely middleweights at San Antonio, black cross. You know, I think that's a good, just like you said, easy feeding kind of calf, no holes. Just pour it to him and, and roll with him.
C
Kind of on the same page of Gartier. If you're like a first time feeder or anything. One you don't really have to be technical with your feed with just kind of give him a little bit, give him a lot when he needs it and roll with him and have fun.
A
Well then the next two lots are going to be full sibs. I get real, real excited when I get to talk about or look at elite Americans 6 and 7 are very, very, very nice American prospects. I got both big hair that can make it to Fort Worth. But just looking at videos from y' all Snapchats, they looks like they got awesome shape up high, especially from behind. So they'd be real good slicking calves. But for Americans to have this kind of hair quality, I think someone would definitely need to get them there at Fort Worth. Six obviously got the big fat feet and legs that move right. Probably not as long proportioned or neat looking as seven, but I think that he's the boxy, square, dense made one. Lot seven is the cooler looking one from the side. I could be wrong, but that's just looking at videos and pictures. What do y' all think of the
B
two Tank six man like that one goes to Fort Worth, needs to be a heavyweight. That thing, big haired, awesome look, just presence on an American and classifies easy. That's a Fort Worth heavyweight every day of the week. The lot seven, he's a little shorter backed actually that one, you know, also has Fort Worth hair but could be the slicking one. Up to two brothers, but I like both of them quite a bit. You know, they're just a little different type and kind, but two really good cattle that I'm. I'm pretty happy doing. Bred and raised and pretty proud of them things.
C
Yep. Kind of on the same page as you drop there that lot six. Something in the category is that lot one and lot three just so big footed, big legged and so much presence and arrogant. He's very sweet as well.
B
Yes.
C
I don't, I don't like American cattle per se, but when that one got off the trailer here, I said what in the heck is that thing? And I'm begging Garth not to sell him, but they all got so got to keep the place running. Lot 7, definitely good hair coat as well. It'll be more of your dual purpose. Don't get the good luck at Fort Worth. You got somewhere to go with him.
B
And they're cool colored underneath. They're both brindle colored underneath the hair. So just two neat catalog. You know that lot seven can maybe even class Simba off for for San Antonio, Houston with his coloring underneath.
A
Well, then lot eight is next. He's actually out of the same cow as the two Americans we just talked about. But on the sire side, he's out of searches over. This would be a black cross. Extremely, extremely good footed moves like a cat in the video. I love how he's so symmetrical from the side and still looks like he's big hit, has great hair. Looks like he's a great dual purpose calf. What do y' all think?
B
Very dual purpose. And I mean just another one that cow stamps him. Good haired with a lot of presence and a lot of look to him. Sound good feeding type of calf. You know, I could see that one being a Georgia to Oye kind of calf. A good her show. Probably in middleweight at Fort Worth for that show. Good calf though, that cow. You know, we're just starting to really get a good sampling of different sire groups on her. And we got another one that'll be for sale here in our later sales. I'd have told you so, but that cow's doing a very good job for us. And I like all three of these calves for different reasons. But that one specifically
C
good black cross,
B
dual purpose middleweight or, you know, take them to a year later her show and that calf's gonna get along pretty nice.
C
I think the cat, he really gets me excited. I mean, I've been excited about a few of them so far, but I'm always the type person that likes one like, oh, he's a little green. That thing you pour the feed to him. He's not gonna do anything to get better. Got a little bit of swollen jaw there in the picture. I wouldn't worry about that calf's real gentle. We had to get them things broke in a hurry. We had an earlier picture day than we thought. But once that one gets the feed going on him, big square hip, big feet, legs, big hair, long neck. Just kind of all your little show calf things you want in one. But yeah, I think definitely middleweight. Fort Worth. Oie. He's a real nice Calf. He kind of reminds me of the calf Jeffries won the middleweight with a couple years ago they got from Tracy.
A
Yeah, for sure. Well, then lot nine is next. This is a golden ticket. Hi O Silver. Obviously a Division 1 prospect. He's probably a little younger, probably a little smaller compared to his contemporaries, but I don't think he's nothing short of quality. Big ribbed, big backed, big back leg. I think this thing's extremely dual purpose. I think he's got great hair to go to Fort Worth, but I'd love to see this one slicked off. Going to a slick show probably around Houston Austin time. What do y' all think?
B
I love this calf. Yeah, I mean he's, he's a lightweight probably his whole life, but you know, someone's gotta, gotta win that division too. And I think this calf, you know, he fits the Fort Worth mold of what they took this year to brand there. But a very high quality dual purpose calf if a guy wants to suck him. And you know, he's probably still going to be in the lightweight AOCs at San Antonio or Houston, but I think a very competitive class, Class one, Division one. Whether you want to take him to Fort Worth or slick him and go from there on him. But I really like this calf a lot.
C
Yeah, I'm on the same page as Garth. Cool colored. I love a good gray speckled up one. I mean just big hip, big footed, big legs. I mean good haired. I'm taking him to Fort Worth all day long, not short. They're going lightweight, but yeah, he's going to get a brand there, I believe. And for some reason he don't. He slicks off just.
A
Well then Lot 10 is next and I believe every sales got a sleeper or that green one. And that's one that y' all say that he's probably the greenest of the offering, but built for the long haul. Actually. This one being poured to feed. I think his structure can hold it and be pushed pretty hard, but I obviously he's a maternal sib to the 2018 Houston Grand Champion steer. This one's built incredible and I think he's the slick Sheeran type for sure and his build can hold all the pushing that he needs to be had.
B
This one needs to go to a little kid. He is like just dog gentle, super tame, easy going, easy feeding, just doesn't care about anything. Gonna be an awesome show calf and he's gonna be fun too because he's gonna, you know, he's good haired, good structured, you know, family can get out and jackpot with that one all summer. Get a lot of experience for a younger showman and have a good time and have fun doing it and you know, just a good calf that's going to be fun to show all year, I think.
C
Yep. This, this calf's name's Nemo by the way. He likes to just wander around and do things on his own. Picture day. He didn't want to be there, so he just left the picture pen, went out in the pasture. We got him back up, walking back out the picture pen decides to jump in the water trough, maybe that get him out of it. But no, finally got him in there, did not want to be there. So kind of come look at this calf in person. We're going to get cell phone videos, everything next couple days. Yeah, some little blonde headed girl needs this calf as her first calf and just have a good time with him.
B
He has got a personality, that's for sure.
C
No thought is running through his head.
A
Well then lot 11's next. These next two will be your more heavyweight show steers. Lot 11 is a how great thou art over monopoly. Lot 12 is a how great thou art over Fu Manchu. Both black crosses, both big haired obviously both extremely good from the profile. Long necked, good looking, but still can move. Both got big hair, but I think both of them obviously will have the option to slick and have the part to look. What do you all think? Where do you think they need to end up?
B
I think, you know, both these cabs just grouping them together a little bit, just too easy. Feeding good heavyweights when it comes to the end of it. And you know, whether you want to show them haired or slick them, you know, I think they just have so much variety on end points, on where a guy can take them, you know, from the Southeast to Mississippi, Alabama, Texas. And they're just, they have so many, so many end points. I think on these two cabs, both built good. You know, I like lot 11 probably over lot 12 for, you know, slick sheer in one. But that Lot 12, that thing has incredible hair. Would, would be my preference that one would go to a hair show because I think he fits that well. Just a lot of different endpoints with that one on both of them and lots of different options a guy can take on them. What do you think, David, about 11 freaking.
C
He just needs to go on a good finisher feed. Big hip, big legged, and I don't know if he'd push a calf for Dallas even. I don't know if he gets quite big Enough for there.
B
But yeah, either get that thing ready
C
for Phoenix, go to Fort Worth. Yeah, he's made, doesn't make it anywhere there. He's going to be a slick steer, plenty of presence, huge feet, huge legs, big rib, long necked and then you got your hairball there. Lot 12. That thing needs to be a heavyweight at Fort Worth, I believe. Or you can go to Phoenix with him. He needs to get his feet trimmed. Right now I really want to pick on about anything but big hip, stout, just good calf, good hair. You're going to be able to create that thing. Anything you want to be.
B
Yes, very good.
A
Well then lot 13 and 14 are next. These are going to be the two last live lots of the sale and they are heifer prospects. Both different. One's a low key, one is a shorthorn plus. But y' all label her as more of a donor prospect. So I guess 13 would be your more show. Half her 14 would be same thing she could be shown. Obviously she's shorthorn plus, but I think her build, 14's build and obviously genetic script is very, very unique. So I think that she's an awesome breeding piece that doesn't take away anything from 13 because she's a here I am Iris Whiskey Skelly. So her genetic script is perfect for making awesome show steers. 13 is real sporty as y' all list, obviously. Long necked, cool looking, has a lot of presence to her. 14 hits me as a real dense, burly heifer that's got the right pieces to make some awesome show steers the road, especially for shorthorns and stuff like that. What do y' all think?
B
Yeah, I love 13. You know, I think that one shall be competitive. If you want to show, there's a key here, showing the AOBs here in Texas. Definitely a cow prospect as well. I think both of these things are, you know, have that potential to go on and be very productive females for a guy, you know, both have the potential to probably be donors at some point in their life. The short horn colored one, she's a perfection out of our red 208 cow which is a monopoly out of Mike Houston's original 208. So this one we're offering 50% embryo interest and show rots if a family wants to show her shorthorn. Junior Nationals is an abilene this year. So close to home for us showing the AOB division and then go on after she's done showing. If someone wants to do that with her, we'll go ahead and start Getting her in production and flush on her. And I think that one makes some very unique shorthorn colored steers down the road in her lifetime. And there's a full Sid there out there too. Or that sold 30,000 for half interest that's working up in Illinois right now. That's doing a good job as well. So kind of a proven pedigree on that one. A lot of different options on her. We're waiting on her defect status to come back on our DNA so we'll have that back before the sale so we'll know what she is and what our options are going forward on her. You got anything to add on those two, David?
C
Yeah, lot 13 I see as being a year and a half from now. Some big, stout, well bellied bred heifer in somebody. So that's going to make them a lot of money in the future. And whoever buys her, that's going to be their donor cow. She is freaky. I like her. I don't really like heifers at all, but I like that one pretty good bit. And then of course your red and white one, she's good. I mean, don't really change much about that one. Yeah, it's going to make somebody a lot of money in the future as well.
B
That one's been fun since the day she was born. We saw her up there in Indiana this summer and I put her on Snapchat and I mean she's just been fun and unique and just has a lot of look to her. And then the. The lot 15 is actually that heifer.
A
Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Talk to me about why you decided to take her to take me to church and what she's done for Yalls program.
B
So we have some take me to church heifers that are on the ground this year that we kept back in our replacement pen. Them things have worked real good for us. I like that pedigree. So going to offer three embryos on her to that mating. I saw them take me to church deer last year out of that meeting to the Barnett family and they're going to have him as a semi in Houston. He looks real good right now too. So another proven mating on that 208 cow. We have some other calves here out of her this year that'll be in our later sales or in our private treaty pens. So we like that cow. We like what she's doing. We're going to be utilizing her pretty heavy going forward here. So one that you'll see in our sales and in our program going forward quite a Bit.
A
Well, then, lot 16 is next. These will be full sibs to the two Americans that are going to be up for grabs. Obviously, this cow's done a lot for y', all, but I think that this specific offering is of high, high value. What do y' all.
B
Cabs? And this is an awesome mating, awesome cow. And another one that, you know, we got several of these coming again next year.
C
And we're going to be flushing on
B
this cow hard and utilizing these heavily down here going forward as well. So trying to offer, you know, everything that we're utilizing and offering our best at matings and embryos and letting everybody be able to get on in on that as well.
C
Me personally, I would buy any Chewbacca mating that is ever offered. Those calves are consistent, just good.
A
Well, then, lot 17 is next. You got three embryos have dropped the hammer over y' all short kick cow. We've talked about short kick before, but talk to me about why I'll decide to go with her on drop the hammer and maybe a little bit more. I mean, obviously we hadn't done one here in a minute. If she's had any success so far with any calves.
B
Yeah. So actually these will be maternal sibs to the lot 2 steer. The perfection that we talked earlier there. I had one of these born this summer. And I hate to say that was probably the best calf we had born on the place. And he died on us and was August, September or something like that. So another proven mating calf that was really nice that we unfortunately lost. But these things are very, very nice. Obviously we. I've had a lot of success with this cow. With the reserve champion shorthorn last year at Houston. Just had champion market heifer at Iowa Beef Expo. Out of this cow, pretty much everything we've sold. She's average. Her. Well, like this mating quite a bit would buy those. Dig into those, get in on those.
A
Then lot 18 is next. These are going to be king of Kings over 10:19. Obviously you've had this mating offered before. It's done real, real well. Obviously they. This cow has done a lot for y' all and Yalls program. Anything you want to touch on with her?
B
Yep. So this is the mother, the 2018 grand steer at Houston. So these will be maternal sibs to those and maternal sibs to our champion lightweight Maine at San Antonio there a couple years ago. This cow works really good to those softer made type bulls. And we've had some king kings out of this mating that look real good. And we're excited for this mating and another one that you know, we think will make good slick shearing cattle down here for the Texas majors. Anything you got on that cow, David?
C
No.
A
Nemo's mom.
C
Oh yeah. They're calm.
B
All good. All good nature too.
C
Little white ones. We got some nice ones that are real nice and just good cow. Be something to make your money back on pretty easily.
A
Well then lot 19 is next. These can be here. I ams over the Jesse James monopoly cow of yalls. Obviously. These are three quarter sibs to the 20, 25 Fort Worth Reserve Middleweight exotic steer that the Barnett family showed. Really, really, really nice calf. Think a really easy way to get your money back.
B
Yes. So these are three quarter sibs to the Barnett families. Middleweight calf there from last year. I've had several of these sold several to different traders across the country on good cattle. They work good. Good mating here on this one too.
A
Lot 20s next. These can be perfection over yalls. Ms. Gold Digger. These will be full sibs to some of yalls. Very best replacement females from last year. Talk to me about why you're offering these and what, what they're looking like so far.
B
So cow that we're flushing on pretty hard to make short horns for us down here. We're gonna have more of this cow in the, in the coming years on her. This is kind of getting in on the ground floor of a cow that I think is going to do a lot in that breed and one we're excited to get flushing on. She's moderate, short back, awesome feet and legs, awesome presence. I'm looking forward to making this cow a couple different ways. But these perfections, we've had them, they're nice, you know, they work for herd shows or slick shows. Good cattle and they'll show shorthorn plus too. So you know, this is a mating that can kind of work in different parts of the country. I think a lot ones next.
A
These are going to be gingers over American woman's. Obviously these would be keys if the heifers came out right. Am I right about that?
B
Years we've had. We've had what, three or four of them this year. And I mean all them things are built good, you know, good feet and legs on them and easy going. That's one thing I've noticed about all the gingers we've had is just very easy going cattle. Good feeding cattle. So a mating here I think you're going to be happy with. Whether you get bulls or heifers, show steers, just a lot of different variety that you can do with these things.
A
Lot 22 is next. These are going to be fire in the holes over Misty. And you'll actually use sexed male semen there for the flood, for the embryos. But I think these would be really cool colored calves. That will definitely stand out. Yeah.
B
So this is a cow I bought last year out of forest sale up there in Indiana. So I haven't had just a ton out of her yet. She had a natural calf this year. Heifer calf. That looks really n right now. Probably put back in my replacement pen. So I got some of these put in. Coming next year in our summer calf crop. Another cow that kind of getting in on the ground floor of her. But very unique female being triple clean, awesome colored. You know those firing the holes, you might get some yellow paints out of them. You might get some shorthorn colored stuff out of them. It'd be a little bit like, what are you getting out of the. Out of the candy box with that one. But a unique mating, I think would be good cattle. Whether they're haired or slick. And a lot of different options on them as well.
A
Well, lot 23 is next. These are going to be cock a doodle dues over Rose. Honestly, I've seen a couple of those calves out of the bull. And I've liked all of them so far. Obviously, she's a full sister to War Paint and Battle Cry. Which have all had a lot, A lot. A lot of breed winners here in the Texas majors. What do y' all think of that mating? And have y' all actually had any so far?
B
I haven't had any personally. Out of. There are some on the ground out there at different operations. And we got some coming for our summer group next year. But we've had several out of this cow on different bulls, too. They're actually our. Our highest average in calves we sold last year. And then this year, the only one I actually have out of her is a heifer. That is a right on time that we got back in the replacement pen right now. So a cow, I mean, she's getting some age to her. But she's. She's done a very good job for us. And I love this mating on her. These are good cattle. And going to be very competitive in the Hereford divisions. She does make them pulled sometimes, too. So you'll probably get some pulls out of this mating. And some horns out of this mating.
A
Well, lot 24 is next. These are going to be sexed male in God We Trust over Voodoo. Obviously, Voodoo's done a lot for y'. All in the past, but these are going to be probably some silvers, maybe get some blacks. I don't know how heavy that transfers, but you might be able to tell better. Garth. I'm not too good about that stuff, but I know that they'll probably be big, big haired and built really good.
B
Yeah. So we've had, I mean, we've had smokes, yellows and like dark cinnamon colored ones out of this mating. Extremely hairy cattle. Awesome built cattle. Every voodoo we have is just, I mean, they got a unique look to them. Awesome presence to them. We showed two voodoo calves this year. We got another one going to Hawaii here in March and got some in our sail pins this year. A very good mating that's been consistent for us. Voodoo Flush is awesome. I mean, even at her age, she's 1112 years old now. Just an incredible cow that's done a lot for us. You get a lot of different color variety patterns out of this mating, but a very consistent mating that has done very well for us.
A
Well, then the last lot of the sale, which is gonna be lot 25. These gonna be how great thou arts over a cow y' all call corona. This probably the first time offering out of this female, isn't it?
B
Slot 25 is out of our corona donor. And this is a mating we've offered one other time. We sold half of her in our bred cow sale there in August. And one that we're utilizing very heavily going forward. All these donors we're offering on the end of this sale here are cows that we're utilizing here in our program and going to be pushing pretty heavy the next couple years to fill our sail pens here. And we believe in these cows and these matings and we're very confident that they're the right kind that need to be out there and in the show ring. And we're excited to work with whoever gets these bought. And you know, that's one thing that we also try to do here is if you buy embryos from us and you have, you know, cabs that you want help marketing with, we would love to help everybody do that and be able to utilize our marketing and our team here to get those calves and get homes and get them taken care of, you know, the right way and.
