Everybody, we got a guest that we've had on before but for as as a guest episode, Mr. Ryan Johnson. And he's back with us to do previews for his two sales that are coming up on sc. But the first one that we're going to cover is the one coming up here shortly which is March 3rd. It'd be his fall and summer born heifer sale. But he's also got two impressive bull prospects to start off the sale. First, I'd like for Ryan to introduce yourself. Obviously you've been on here before and you're well known in the industry but just kind of a brief summary of what the sale is all about. The primary goal is and then after that we can dive into all the lots.
B
You bet. Thanks Weston. Ryan Johnson, owner of RJ Cattle Co. And just kind of getting ready for a couple summer and fallborn calf sales here in the next week or so. Just like years past the last several years we brought our fall and summerborns down to Zach Wells place in Oskaloosa, Kansas. Trying to very large percent of them every a percentage of them every year go down south. So kind of gets them a little closer and a farther away from our cold winter climate. So yep, just be happy to kind of go through the lots with you Austin for sure.
A
Well you start off with lot one. It's your first bull prospect we're offering. He's a three quarter Simmental. He's out of county O on a female you call Joe who's a pandemic relentless Tammy. He's a summer of 2025. Obviously you're selling half half semen interest and full possession. In my mind he reads extremely burly and dense featured extreme got extreme pieces of premium and outlier for the Simmental breed in terms of length and neck, his proportions and just how big footed and and soft he is at the surface.
B
Yep. So this is actually a natural calf out of a donor of Zach's that Zach actually bought from us a few years ago. And she's doing some really cool things for him. She was a solid red female. It goes back to the high selling relentless Tammy cow we sold Sullivan several years ago. Kind of one of the most popular he out of that relentless taming mating was Darbyshire's Heer who won Kansas City, Louisville and Oklahoma City. Think kind of a really cool mating on Tammy is a couple of her better daughters maybe. And then this pandemic daughter kind of continues the tradition obviously Zach was maybe probably hoping for a heifer calf here but sure does not Disappoint in terms of quality. Kind of hits the things you talked about for a 3/4 Simmental. Absolutely incredible on his feet and legs. Very, very flexible off of both ends. Kind of unique color, real dark red. Even gets a little black around his nose and tail. Zach actually had a maternal brother to this calf last year. He was a Memphis mafia maintainer bull that won his division both at Denver and Kansas City. Very, very high quality individual that went on to do good things for his new owner. And I'd look for this bull if somebody's looking for a bull to show. Would be very, very competitive. And also, you know, a three quarter blood simmental that can mate up on purebreds and make the next generation of purebreds really, really unique and really nice.
A
Well, then lot two's next. He's a hits different over a female. You call 207, which is the wood on Sandy. He's a fall of 20, 25 and he's a main Angus in my mind. He's a little bit different in his type and kind little more unique through his front one third in my mind or maybe reads a little more youthful but still progresses back deep to his flank. Extremely good footed, very agile off both ends. Talk to me about him and what you think makes him so special and what he'd have to offer for the main Angus.
B
Yep. So obviously another mating. We were shooting for show heifers. Got a bull calf just by the 10% of accident, but dang sure, one that we are not disappointed. Kind of starts at the ground, big feet, open toes. Got a tremendous amount of bone under him, but very flexible and clean in his joints. Still, like you said, very, very unique through his front one third but still plenty of rib and still some power. We would have had like three or four full sisters to him that we kind of scattered around the country that different guys sold for us last fall. They were very, very popular. One of them sold to a family in Indiana that Matt McKeel works with. She was just in the top five at a jackpot show here not very long ago in Indiana. Another one, Kendall Bremer would have bought out of Jess Rector sale very competitive. Meaning as heifer in Iowa. Yeah, they were just for sevens rookie calf crop. We were very, very impressed with them and absolutely love this hits, different mating. I think this bull would be another one that'd be fun if somebody's looking to show one. But more importantly, if somebody's got some main influence females. He's a straight up 50 percenter that could make Highs on purebreds or breed him to other main Angus heifers and make some very, very high quality F2 type of deal. I think he's a really, really unique creature with absolutely incredibly big feet and legs.
A
That lot three is next and this is the first heifer prospect that you got to offer and she's out of the A1 sire over a 532 cow. That is a first and goal. Obviously she's a fall of 2025. She is an Angus in my mind. I don't think it gets any better in terms of refinement and femininity. I mean her, the shape to her head and the top side of her neck is so unique. But I love how soft she is about her center body and just how loose she is off either ends. It just hits me as such a square and level made female. Obviously you're selling half embryo interest and full possession on her. Talk to me about what you think her future looks like and what she could do for the breed.
B
Yeah, I think all them things you said as being so unique up there through a front one third head, neck and shoulders. Awesome. Real high your sets. Hits you with some presence and commands your attention right away but definitely does not disappoint you from their back. Once again, really, really good feet and legs. Pretty soft haired for an Angus. She is young but I think she's got all the potential in the world to show on a young fall class. These are actually some embryos Steve Hicks purchased and probably kind of got lucky. The new heights. So this heifer is a 532 daughter which makes her a maternal sister to new heights. I think that deal's popular, is going to continue to be more and more popular and pretty unique opportunity here at not only a high, high quality show heifer but big time donor prospect out of the 532 cow. We are keeping half interest in her with Steve. I think not only will be a fun show heifer but down the road be a big time donor for everyone involved.
A
Lot four is next and she's a perfection out of your female. Lady Crystal434P3. Obviously this would be a purebred shorthorn female. She is a summer 2025 in my in my mind. I hate using this word on females but she just hits me as wolfie. Extremely dense, extremely big pieces. But I absolutely love how she puts it all together. So SC muscle.
B
Yep. It just kind of seems like the lady Crystal deal is kind of timeless. I mean kicks them out year after year and I Don't know if I've ever seen a female that can combine the ratio of no neck, no chest into big bodied, big hip, stout legged ones like she does time after time. I think this heifer calf almost does it to another degree. She's probably one of my favorite favorites ever we've had out of this mating. I had a couple of them very popular last year. The Tabor family from Iowa show did a lot of winning. Also the Long family from Iowa had a roan heifer that was very, very popular in Iowa. Yeah, I think really a cool mating. Very versatile in terms of having like you said, some burly punch to her. Can raise them both ways probably. But ultra neat in terms of her feet and legs and look and beautiful hair coat. Be a very competitive show heifer.
A
Well, you talk about beautiful hair coat and I think that's a real good Description for Lot 5 your for your pulled Hereford female. She's an on demand pixie which is sustainable. I think it's really refreshing to see a Hereford female have that kind of hair coat. She hits me as extremely dense featured big rib, big hipped and still utilizes her hind legs just so well. Talk to me about her and what you think she has to offer.
B
Yep. So our real good friends is a bird family, particularly their youngest boy Ty loves Herfords. He ended up purchasing Pixie when Hoffman was selling his partnership donors gone on to do some big, big things with her. She would have most recently, probably one of her most recent really really popular champ females was shown by Maddie Jenkins out of Texas. Won her division Junior nationals, ended up being champion Kansas City and Denver. She was a very, very popular Pixie daughter. There's been some Pixie granddaughters actually been grand in reserve at junior nationals just recently. This past fall a work family from Kansas had a full sister to this heifer. Won her division in both the junior and open shows. Mating does a good job of combining some EPDs with absolutely incredible phenotype. And I think this heifer is one of my very favorites out of Pixie I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of them just kind of got the extra power that Pixie possesses with some beautiful rib and a nice look there from the side like you kind of hit on beautiful hair coat. Be a very, very fun show heifer. And not only that, I think she'll kind of fall on the whole Pixie cow family steps of being a big time generator down the road.
A
Yes sir. Well, lot six is next and she's a coping with destiny out of Vicki, which is a relentless. She's a fall of 2025 and it is a purebred simmental compared to her contemporaries that we've already talked about. She might be a little more green, but I don't think that's a takeaway from her quality at all. Her build is immaculate in my mind. The way she it's so level and so square and the way that she's so soft at the surface. Talk to me about her and what you think her future looks like. Obviously I think she's a great show heifer for somebody.
B
Yep, absolutely. This is another young fallborn female I got from Hicks. Like you said, for a purebred simmental, they don't make them that pretty and that sound every day. Absolutely neat. The way she ties her neck high and smooth into her shoulder, yet handles her spine very, very well. Really, really flexible off of both ends. I think a heifer that's got a ton of future. And then when somebody's done showing her, obviously got some big pieces. A really cool, really cool breeding piece for someone. You know, the Vicky cow's been pretty popular. Another one that kicks them out year after year. Some really nice cattle and the Jared Warning program here in South Dakota. Willie Weiss has a Vicky daughter that I think he owns with Lashmitz that does some big things. Yeah, I think very popular cow family that does a really, really good job. I think that coping with destiny matings maybe one of her best work yet.
A
A lot. Seven's next. This is going to be a three quarter shorthorn female that's a fall of 2025. She's a written in red out of a female that you call shortcake. She's a man amongst boys, a lady crystal. What I think so unique about this one is just how high tying she is and still how strong top she is in motion and the way she utilizes her hind leg and really dense haired. Talk to me about what you think of her. Obviously it's a new mating on shortcake.
B
Yeah, exactly. You know, we've had a lot of perfections the last few years out of shortcake. They've been very, very popular. Just recently we had division two champion market heifer with a perfection shortcake at Iowa Beef Expo. Even the year before, I think or two years before that had another one that did the same thing. Thought written in red would just kind of be something different and cool to try. Actually seen a steer we thought was really, really good out of written in red and thought we'd try it on shortcake. And we only did end up with one of these. I wish we'd have more because I love the heifer. Like you said, she hits you with some presence, but very powerful from their back. And another one. I think if somebody's looking for a short arm plus to show in the summer division or the fall division. Excuse me. But still more importantly, these shortcake daughters are kind of getting into production now and I think very, very fun to make shorthorn mark steers that will be very, very fun to show at like Fort Worth and other shows down south would be a lot of, a lot of neat things you can do with them. And I think this one brings structure and power and look to another level.
A
Lot 8's next. And this is going to be your steer mama deluxe. As you say in the comments, she's an in God we Trust out of a female that you call 400. Obviously she's a summer of 2025 in my mind. It doesn't get as burly as this one. I mean, but to still be that big ribbed and still have that kind of length and neck and still be refined about her throat and chest and have that massive of a back leg and utilize it so well, I think it's just real impressive.
B
Yeah, little 400 cow that we own with Justin Muck has done a good job for both of us for several years. Kind of having one of our best couple years here. Had a slick shear steer in Texas. Was champion at Austin a couple years ago for the Wahl family just this past summer. A full sister to this heifer as well. This champion at Nebraska State Fair. For the Prinz family, we have a how great daughter out of 400 showing in Illinois by the Gensini family. Just won a ring at the Illinois Beef Expo. So I mean, year after year, 400 seems to kick out some cool stuff. Kind of a cool story. The McDonough boys, McDonough boys from Iowa have got a full sister, this heifer that had one of their high selling steers. So I think these 400 daughters, we, me or Muck, probably neither of us have made enough females out of her over the years. But just a few that are out there doing big things and I'd project this one to do the same. Love her feet and legs, love her extra shape and punch and dimension, but still really neat up front. Grabs your attention.
A
Yeah, sure.
B
Yeah, I wish she was a steer. Be a high dollar show calf. But somebody can take advantage and utilize her in production.
A
Yes, sir. Well, lot nine's next. This would be A three quarter Simmental. She's a Coping with Destiny out of Lady Killer. So talk to me about her.
B
She's a full sister to actually our high seller a couple years ago on our September sale that frackings would have bought from us. She actually just calved here the other day and is one of the most incredible 2 year olds I've ever seen. Can't wait. Frecking is actually a virgin ivf that heifer and are very, very excited with some of her babies they got on the ground. I think that's a really cool mating with loy Killer. Breeding up to a three quarter blood with Coping with Destiny. And you know you kind of get the best of both animals who I think both do a really good job. You get the signature big flexible feet and legs with Lady Killer. Incredible rib cage from Coping with Destiny. I think a very cool three quarter blood that will bring making purebreds with her will make him a little extra style, a little extra length of neck and tons of rib and hair.
A
Yes sir. Lot tens next. This is going to be an Angus female that's out of style on a cow that you call 138J. She's a dignity over 419. This is a summer of 2025. Obviously she's real long necked, real long proportioned and still very sound at the surface. Talk to me about her and what she goes back to and what do you think her future looks like?
B
Y so we've had several full and maternal sisters to her the last couple years. This one actually comes from our friends. Cowan's partner on 138J. I think just a beautiful summer born female that's so hard to put a hole in.138 JS had full and maternal sisters shown by the Thorson family in Iowa. Did a lot of winning last year. Top five finishes at beef expo, Iowa State Fair, Oakland plant showed a casino. 138J did a lot of winning throughout several jackpot shows. Culminated her show career being reserve at Louisville. There's some 138J daughters that are starting to get shown this year. Very, very competitive. I think this heifer has a bright future in the show ring and be a very fun breeding piece. Like I said, kind of no holes but it's got some extra hair and look and balance to her.
A
Yes Sir, a lot. 11's next and this is going to be kind of a crossbred female but she's a man amongst bo boys over full throttle female. She's a summer of 2025. Honestly the density to her rib cage and the size of her hips impressive to me. But I think definitely paired to some club calf Hereford bulls. The next generation of show steers will be in very good hands.
B
Yep, absolutely. So she's actually out of a purebred Hereford female. We would have had a full brother to her a couple years ago, maybe three, four years ago now. Even Brock, Welsh and Spot ended up winning the Herefords at oie mating kind of every year. One high sellers last year would have been a full brother to this female. Like I. I mean you kind of nailed the nail that just awesome mark. Female extra density and width and power. A very good mark to think breeder up and take advantage of the extra extra pop and bone and hair and muscle that may be brings to the table. I think a very fun one to breed onto down the future.
A
Yes sir. Well, lot 12 next. This can be another crossbred female. She's out of the ginger sire on a female you call 7 19. She's a summer 2025. Honestly in my mind I don't think it gets much better in terms of proportionality from the side and symmetry. But huge footed it looks like it's real soft and agile at the surface.
B
Yeah, absolutely. We actually purchased this cow's mother with Troy and Taylor Scott and from Missouri kind of both of us looking for a red donor. I happened to pull into Harley Cable's yard a couple springs ago. Seen a little red and white short arm marked calf. Found what I thought was an absolute incredible beast of a cow and kind of asked him what what the story was. Said she was a fool. Back to an old semi bull that him and Nick Ryman had called Cable guy. Just like her mother is one of the coolest looking moderate, big bodied, hairy, incredibly flexible feet and legs. Wanted to keep him red. So did her to ginger and got a couple heifer calves in this sale that I think will be a lot of fun. 719 did awesome for us this year. We had a perfection 719 short perfect shorth year. Kirby Eves bought. We had a BDR peach is actually bought. He was a really really nice butterscotch. Yeah I think that cow did really good on her first year getting some ET calves out of her. And I think these ginger daughters would be a lot of fun to breed on just like her.
A
Lot 13 is next. You got a half blood simmental. She's a Sam over 49G and obviously in my mind that's a big rib cage and a big hip and she utilizes it just so well at the surface, but extremely proportional from the side. And I love that her silhouette. So talking about her mating, obviously 49g is something that's probably had a lot of success.
B
Yeah. So this heifer actually came from Collins as well as that Angus Summerborn we talked about. This would be some eggs he bought from Tim Schaefer. 49G is probably a little more popular in the Lim Flex ring, but recently, you know, they've had a broker that the Clark family show did a lot of winning. I think just kind of speaks for the quality of 49G that she can ra braids different breeds. Yeah. Like you talked about the Sephora's unique. She got in the picture pen and I was like, holy smokes. She's kind of hard to fault. Being pretty neat up front. Awesome in the angles of her skeleton. Big body, really long and level hipped. Think a very, very competitive half blood simmy. If somebody's looking to get in that summer division for sure.
A
Well, lot four comes next. And you got a seven, eight shorthorn here. That's something you don't see every day. But she's a lethal out of Lady Crystal. Very dense haired. Again, just barely made female. I mean, big rib cage, very good in the used or hind leg. I love the way her shoulder lays into her. So smooth. But very refined and feminine through her front one third. Talk to me about her and what you think that her future looks like.
B
Yeah. So this was actually kind of lining up Lady Crystal a little bit, but I'm glad we did. Very, very unique. Higher percentage shorthorn female. I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure the next generation you can make purebreds with. That was kind of one of the ideas with lethal for a breeders. Add some extra bone and hair and muscle back into these shorthorn cattle. I think this heifer does this to a very high degree and can be bred to, you know, a little more mainstream shorthorn bull and get something very, very unique. Being white in color like her mother gonna throw a lot of roans, stuff like that. Bred to a red bull. Yeah, you kind of hit it. Very unique female. Being higher percentage shorthorn brings some extras to the table.
A
Yes, sir. Well, then lot 15 is next. And this would be a full sib to Lot 11, correct?
B
Yep, yep.
A
Awesome.
B
Another crossbreed, I think just a lot like her sister. Maybe a little more conservative in her markings. Being rednecked and got red a little closer to the ground, but still kind of the big picture of things. Dense and big Hipped and got some extra stoutness to her. Another one I think would be a very, very fun breeding piece. Just like your sister.
A
Yeah, Lot 16 is a full SIB to Lot 12, but in my mind she's a little denser than that one or I guess burlier about a rib cage. Maybe the size of her pin set, I could be wrong, but what do you think?
B
Nope, that's exactly right of the sisters. Maybe not quite as clean through a front one third but it kind of fits her right like you talked about. Really, really dense in terms of her midsection. Probably just a little bit bigger legged and bigger hipped. But I think people would go back and forth on the pair. Both of them a lot of fun to breed on. Beautiful color, awesome feet and legs.
A
Yes, sir. Well then you got a little bit of a mixture. We've talked about both ginger and lady crystal so far, but you put them both together for lot 17 for a half blood shorthorn. Obviously she's a real long necked, very feminine about the top side of it. Long proportioned and very agile on the move. Talk to me about her and what you think.
B
Yeah, I think you kind of nailed it. I was probably looking for a little something different to do lady crystal too. See, it could get for kind of a club calf shorthorn mark type donor and for sure incredibly big bone, big back, big hip, long, long thin neck, no chested. Yeah, just kind of a different cool mating for guys that are looking for shorthorn marks. Deer mamas.
A
Yes sir. Well, a lot 18's gonna round out the sale and obviously this can be a maintainer or low key. She's a hits different over 422 female which is a broker. Angus, Harrietta. In my mind it doesn't get as maternal as this. I mean just the way she's shaped about her head and neck and how she progr his back. So soft and deep to her center rib and flank. But that is a burly hind leg that's extremely soft at the surface.
B
Yeah, no, you kind of just nailed her. So powerful and flexible and just drives off of both ends. Incredible big, big round rib cage in her. Stout hipped but still for as stout as she is, he's got a long smooth muscle pattern. She's not one of them. Real thin necked, hard doing ones. But I think her necktie is high and it's plenty long. I just foresee this heifer to be very, very competitive in. And as you can see, I think a lot of her want to keep half embryo interest I think this one generates both ways. Big time. Very, very high quality female, beautiful hair. I just can't say enough about this one. I had a very nice set of Fallborn heifers and this was the one that I always liked the best in terms of being the legged, biggest, footed, burliest one and still ties everything together. Really, really nice.
A
Yes, sir. Well, that kind of rounds out the sale. Is there any, any extra comments that you'd like to tack on before we end the preview on the heifer sale?
B
No, not really. You know, I talked about the lot. One bowl as one. Zach raised Zach's numbers on the sales site there. If you guys got any questions, feel free to reach out to him on that, that guy there. And then also if you're gonna swing by his place, don't be afraid to call him and he'd be happy to show you the calves there. He's got a beautiful place to look at them. And yeah, don't hesitate to call. We are always friendly about lining up trucking and stuff like that, getting registration papers. My wife does a really good job with getting everybody papers right away.
A
So, yes, sir.
B
Don't hesitate to call us if you've got any questions and sure, be happy to help you out.
A
Absolutely. Well, the head for sale is found on SC on March 3rd. Obviously the Cavs are there in Kansas and as Ryan stated, Zach's number is on there for anybody that wants to get out there and see them all. So with all this said, thank you all for tuning in. End. So it's all about, we'll see you all next time.
