Well, everybody, we're back here on another preview and I'm extremely excited. I get to represent Premium Beef Genetics again. They have a customer here, the Smoky Y Ranch. I'm here with Kelly and Cody. They have a sale coming up here on March 9th. They are from Monument, Kansas and they have an awesome Red Angus bull and heifer sale coming up. And I'm extremely excited to talk about some of the highlighted lots here with both Cody and Kelly, as well as Mr. Mike Barlow. He's on here with us too. So Mike, introduce yourself real quick and what Premium Beef Genetics is all why he decided to represent people like Kelly and Cody there at Smokey Y. And then also Kelly and Cody, if y' all want to introduce yourselves as well and give me the entire background of what Smokey Wye's objective is and what the primary goal is after that, we'll dive into all the lots.
B
Yes, sir. Hey, thanks. Thanks for having us again, Weston. Appreciate Kelly and Cody here with us this evening with Smokey Y Ranch. We're here to talk about Smoky Y Ranch this evening and what them guys have been doing out there. And it's pretty exciting to me working with these guys. This is my second year to actually work with the Youngkin family and I've enjoyed it tremendously. These guys are hard working. They go out and do this. They got a passion, like I said, for this business and making it better and building a better product and a better animal every year. And it's, it's really shown for me just, just since last year the type and kind and the quality that these guys are bringing to the public in their bull power and just the overall phenotype and just the absolute, the way these cattle are ran out there at Smokey Y, they're just, they're in big pastures, it's a dry climate. They just, they got a really hard working set of cows that, that I appreciate and it's been a real, but real treat for me to help these guys market these bulls. And like I said, this is my second year to help them. And it's just a family ran operation and it's just a really unique business that they've built out there and they've got a lot of good quality cattle to work around, good building blocks and bringing a good product to the table. Kelly, if you want to get started and Cody and visit a little bit about how you guys got a start in this business.
C
Yeah. I'm Kelly Youngkin, I'm the youngest brother and I'm give it to Cody here
D
Yeah, I'm Cody Younkin. Our other brother, Levi, he also helps on the ranch when he can, but. Yeah, I want to thank Mike with premium beef Genetics for really helping us last few years supporting the story and the cattle that we've been running and appreciate the. The passion he has for the cattle we're raising. But, yeah, the history of the ranch. So my grandpa Jack and my dad Randall, they've been running cows since the 60s. The actual ranch we're on right now was purchased in 1978. It was the old Tuck Smith Ranch. That first initial purchase was about a thousand acres, and we've built it from there. So we've been. We still run commercial Cat. We've been running commercial cattle for the last 50 years. The. The last. We growing up in high school, we ran cattle beside our dad and grandpa and just grew up around cattle our whole life. And in the last 15 years, me and Kelly have gotten into the registered Red Angus cattle and purchased our first 70 at that point. And now we're over 750 headed register cows now and. And from there and really built the cow herd off of the foundation of just what it takes to kind of run cattle anywhere and feet and udders and just good, functional cattle that will work in this tough environment. These pastures range from, you know, half section to 3,000 acres. Some of these pastures, and they got to walk to water and the cattle got to work. Work for us and. And I think they'll really work anywhere. And that's kind of. Kind of how we've based the program and. And just good feed utters just good, functional cattle. And. Yeah, that's kind of how the.
B
The history. Not a lot of shade out there either is.
D
No, no, not a lot of shade. Uh, yeah, it can get hot and it gets really cold too, so.
B
Oh, yeah.
A
Absolutely unique.
B
It's very. It's a super unique place to go visit Weston on behalf of those cows. I mean, you're pulling out some huge pastures, and I mean, it can be dry and desolate, and I mean, those cows just. I mean, they've built a. Built an animal out there and they've weeded them out, you know, I mean, they have built an animal out there that thrive on that in that condition. And that's what's so unique about sending these bulls to different areas of the country. Like, they know how to thrive in. In a desert area and somewhat, you know, at times, and they know how to thrive in a really cold area. So they kind of tend to just work in a lot of different environments is what I like about it when we send them out. And it's pretty, pretty awesome the collection of cow power that they've built these bulls around for this sale for sure.
A
Well, like Marlo had told me prior to this, y' all are pretty out there in the middle of nowhere. And the fact that y' all can have a sale like this through DV auctions with that amount of quality for one, but that much at the same time I think is extremely impressive. So kudos to y'. All. But to kind of start off the sale and dive into everything. Lots 1 through 18 are all going to be 2 year old bulls. So why don't y' all run through me the highlighted bulls of that. Of the two year old selection and what yalls primary goal is to offering those two year olds to the public.
C
Well, I guess to get it started with lot one. I mean we're just super happy with him. He's long, he's, he's got a lot of body to him. Kind of a cool cow family. The E731, that grand dam, she, she kind of came from that first 75 group that we, that Cody said we bought, you know, years ago. She'd have been a daughter out of that deal. We're always excited to get female come from that bloodline. They just seem to work. It just kind of, you know the females are just real feminine, more moderate. And then the, the custom made we actually we went up to Canada and we bought a 100 bred cows up there. And so they, the grandma of the custom made is the, the 1250Z and she, she's out of the MRLA 61X and some of the best females we bought out of Canada always came out of that bloodline. So it's kind of a cool. A cool. They just tend to work here. They do good for us. They keeping. They were just pretty happy with them.
B
Yeah, I agree with you Kelly on that. I think those cattle have, they've really thrived out there. The custom made bulls have really done a miraculous job. I think just as far as putting pounds on the ground and in a lower berth, but still yet giddy up and go. You know, I mean they don't steal, they, they grow and they do it efficiently and they're really easy flashing and I just think that cow family or that cow family that you were talking about and of the going back to the six mile deal on the bottom side, I mean it's unique. I mean it brought it a little different Twist out cross pedigree for what you was needing at the time. And it's worked really well.
C
Yep.
B
Yeah, for sure. The Grant one too. I mean, say a little something about him. That bull's done a nice job. Kelly.
C
The Grantland. Yeah, he's been pretty cool. I mean, just freaky front ends lower, lower birth weight. They, they come out small and they get going and they really grow into themselves. Nice good foot on them. They generally don't get too big, just kind of thick and more of a Cavanese deal really. But a lot of performance for most of them come out of Sephora bulls really. But probably should have been a show bull, but he's just kind of that style and, and they just got the look.
B
Yeah. Got some eye appeal to them. I mean that's happening to you guys. Last, last time I was there too, we were planning on maybe getting some more off for next year, even of the two year old bulls, right?
C
Yep. Yeah. As we go we got, we got two different herds of fall herd and spring herd. Almost this year both herds are going to be about half and half. So we'll, we'll start getting into more, more two year olds as we go. I, I think in the future, hopefully half the bulls in the cell are two year olds and maybe, maybe, you know, we can get up to maybe 120, 150 at some point in time and, and that'd be pretty neat to see half of those bullies to be two year olds.
B
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
A
Well, that lot, that lot 12 bull is also out of the declare. Lot 11 and 12 are both out of declare. And that bull pictured there in Lot 12, I mean he reads extremely cool from the side. He's a robust body, big hit bull that reads extremely functional and obviously Lot 11 is pictured there. He's out of him and he reads the exact same way. Just rugged beef bulls that have all the right fundamentals.
C
Yeah, the declarable we, we purchased a few years back. He had a really cool profile and typically we don't really dive into the EPD game that much. You know, they got to look good to really stay and. But these ones, they're deep bodied, they got a lot, they got a lot to them. The, the bottom one there on Lot 12. It was kind of a cool deal. The, the PI. Optimism. We probably bought that 10 years ago or whatever year that would have been and all those daughters are really good. We kept a lot of them over the years and they just, those bulls have a lot a big crest on them and I think that's kind of important to have a good female or something to that. They just, I don't know, they're typically lower birth weight and they just are flashy. The declared deals worked really good. They get, they got a lot to them and we're pretty excited about those two bulls.
B
Yeah, for sure.
A
Well, after the two year old you start off with lot 19 and several of his, several of those are going to be out of the Cashmere bull. It seems like y' all are pretty high on. Talk to me about what that bull's done for Yalls program. Obviously his progeny or nonetheless best in the sale in terms of just their body shape, how much that power and dimension they have and also with that an advantage in length of spine, levelness of hip and functionality as well.
D
Yeah, I'll let Kelly join in too. That lot 19 is, is a favorite and people that have come down, look at the bulls. He, he definitely stands out right away. That 166 or 163k cow, she has another bullcap on her this year. That is going to be something next year. That calf all summer you just knew he was going to turn out to be something. And he has and he's got, you know, low birth weight heifer bull but just enough to him that he's going to work on a lot of different type of cattle. It's going to be safe on heifers. The Cashmere, the sire of that bull, we bought that bull three or four years ago and we found that bull at a sale and we really liked him. Just good foot, a lot of body. That bull thick and he's he good. The females out of the Cashmere, there's. There's quite a few of those in the replacement pen and they're going to be exciting in the future.
C
Yeah, we were just excited right off the get go. I mean you get a calf that's you know, two, three months old when you already know you, you need to stop and take a video of his mom. I mean you, you just, you, you, you know, you're in for it. So we're pretty excited. Yeah, he was, he was one of the heaviest calves we weaned and he's just got a huge hip in him long and. Yeah, I don't really know if we'd.
B
Yeah, he's big time. He's got a herd bull features all over him. Weston. I mean he big, stout, cool fronted, long spine, big hipped and just, he's, he just, he just stand out. He's herdboard he could go to any registered breeder and make an impact.
A
Absolutely. Well, another sire group that stands out to me is 30, 32 through 35, all being out of the Dominion bull. And obviously that 32 is listed in the picture there in the catalog. In my mind, they have an advantage in terms of height to shoulder extension out run in while still offering a lot of rib shape and a huge hip with an awesome hind leg. Talk to me about what that bull's done for Yalls program. Why you're, what y' all are excited for his bulls.
C
Yeah, I mean that, that bull's really neat. We're using him out on the cows right now. He's. Or the, the, the Dominion sire, I guess I should say. Yeah, he's out on the cows right now holding his condition really good. These calves out of him here, they look really cool. They're really, they're really flashy. They kind of hold their heads just right and it's kind of fun to really grow cattle like that. And the, on the, on the cow side, the E752, she's, she's been a favorite for a long time. She's just never really misses. Even the grand dam, the 1537, she just constantly does it every year. Doesn't miss. And she's a 12 year old cow. Yeah, she's a 12 year old cow still here. It's just nice to see those cows that do that stick around a long time. And yeah, we, we think it's, we think it's awesome set of calves and they're low birth.
B
I mean them calves are all, them bulls are all low birth heifer bulls too. Out of that Dominion.
A
Yes, sir. Well, 36 through 42 are all going to be out of the custom made bull of Yalls that Marlo and y' all have both been pretty high on and utilized. Heavy. Talk to you about some of your more highlighted lots out of that bull through those specific lots and maybe what the bull has done for y' all there on 36.
C
He's, he's, he's, he's just a big square. I mean he gets out and moves good. He's carrying a lot of weight. He, he just, he carries it really well and I think he's going to be good for the next guy. I mean if somebody's wanting to put a lot of pounds on, he's going to be the easy keeping type of genetics that are going to do that. And then one, one of my favorites is 37. He's, he's pretty moderate but man, he's good. He's just a lot of body. A lot of body deep. He's a heifer bull. An awesome heifer bull. He doesn't look like a heifer bull when you actually look like. Look at him. But just a real cool front end on him. Awesome feet. Can't say enough about him.
B
He's burley. I mean, he's a cowboys bull deluxe. Kelly is me. I mean, he really.
C
Yeah.
B
When you.
C
When I think when you came down, you're like, dang, that's a good. That's a good herd bull there. And then I got to look in the EPDs up on him and realize that he's a heifer bull. Then I got really excited and yeah,
B
he's got an 18 for CED.
C
Yeah. Yeah.
B
And he's a beast. I mean, it's pretty rare.
C
Pretty rare for a CD to. To be that high at Denford to look that good.
B
Oh, yeah. These kind of heifer bull that you can keep some females back off of, you know, not just a typical. You know, some of them guys use them heifer bulls and just plan on selling them all, you know. But bulls like him, you can actually keep daughters back out, back off of and put them back in your herd and not sacrifice growth and performance.
A
Yeah, for sure. Well, lots 45 through 48 are all out of the coming in hot bull. Talk to me about what he's done for Yalls program and essentially what his bulls look like phenotypically and what they have to offer to the public.
D
Yeah, so there's that six mile coming in hot bull. That's a bull we purchased from six Mile, I think six years ago. He was our pick in that deal. And he's really turned out good. That bull. Just a lot of body, stout, thick, just moves out really well. We're still using him now. The females out of that really good. Just. Just a neat bull.
B
One of those bulls.
D
When you know you're driving through the pasture with somebody at the ranch, they. Who's that bull? You know, that's the question.
B
Yeah, he's incredible.
C
Yeah.
D
Yeah, he is. He's just. He's made right. And so those. Those kids out of him. Same way thick, a lot of body move good. That bull has just really worked well for us.
B
So,
D
yeah, the 45 through the 48 are out of that sire and the kids we've sold in the past, the guys that have bought those bulls but have nothing good to say. They've just worked really well.
C
Yeah, nothing but good things. To say, yeah, yeah, he's done a nice job.
B
That bull's done a nice job. They're just super balanced and they'll just go to work and keep their flesh and add performance and just do a lot of things right.
C
And there. There was probably, I don't know, two or three cells there in the past. Those calves are the high sellers. There's. They're just made different. They don't look like normal red Angus bulls. They're just pretty neat.
A
Absolutely.
B
For sure.
A
Well, 59 through 64 are all going to be out of the rail yard bull that y' all talked about, so. Or let me. Let's go into those bulls, what they look like phenotypically and what Railyard has done for y'.
C
All. Yeah.
B
So we.
C
We would have bought the. The original flashback. I can't remember what year that was. Maybe eight, nine years ago and quite a bit of money and started using them. Got a lot of bull kills out of them. And we actually ended up keeping a bunch of suns out of that. Out of the original flashback. And this bull would have been one of them. And like, even. Even on 58 there, the code red, the kind of. Kind of similar bloodlines, but they.
A
They just.
C
They're just different. They got a nice big foot on them and they're good footed flashback. We used him a long time and he never did have a bad foot. It just kind of stuck in there and.
B
And worked.
C
Worked his tail off both seasons. I mean, we get to use them twice a year. So it's a little different situation that we really put him through the ringer and he just kept in there and did a good job and they just got a good bottom or, you know, a good leg on. So.
B
Yeah, yeah, he did. He has done a nice job. And the daughters you guys kept back are pretty phenomenal too, aren't they, Kelly?
C
Yeah, they do good. They milk good.
A
Yeah, good.
C
Utter good uttered on them. And then even right below there on Lot 60, he's a really cool calf. And it goes back to the 1537 we talked about earlier. Earlier in the book. The cows doing a awesome job. And that was the. The. The. The dam of the rail yard. So we knew. We knew we had to keep him. But no, it's been a. They are a little bit yellow maybe, but they don't really bother us here. But they've. They've done great. We've had a lot of people earlier when we're talking about the coming in hots, driving through the pastures and they're like, whoa, stop the pickup. I mean, he was kind of the same sire. Everybody wanted to look at him. Done a good job.
A
Well, I know that there's two bulls in particular that y' all wanted to highlight, and that'd be lot 67 and 76. Talk to me about why those bulls are so influential to y' all and. And why you're. Why you're wanting to highlight them. And also, you know, what they've done Phoenix typically. And what they've gone back to in terms of their. In terms of their pedigree and maybe elaborate on their genetic script too, a lot.
C
67, I really like him. He reminds me of Grantland quite a bit. Just kind of the way he's made. And the same. The same head, the same front end. And the. That 2080 cow there, she is just really nice temperament. Just calm. You can almost scratch her. She's. She's just really cool. Made cow. Yeah. I mean, once you. I mean, when you see him, you're like, holy smokes. You know, you gotta take a second look at that calf. Just long, thick, you know, it's. It'd be hard to make one as good as him. And he. His temperament is really good. He just kind of stands there and watches you. You might be two feet away. And he's just pretty neat.
B
Yeah, he's super hard, full of red meat.
D
Do.
B
I mean, that sucker is long spined. I mean, he's one that'll catch your attention fast.
A
Yes, sir.
D
Yeah. A lot 76 a calf I really like. He goes back to that 1744 cow. Back to the optimism that we talked about earlier. Team 40 cow, real moderate, just stout. Co this bull carries that. He's just thick from behind. Stout, stout, dark red moves out good. This would be one of my favorite bulls in the cell. And I think it's a. He's also a heifer bull. I think he could go out to really any program and work well for him. Yeah, just. He's a moderate bull, just dark red, stout, thick and. And can really make some good females as well as some bull calves.
C
And he goes back to the. The pie optimism that we were a huge fan of those fema.
B
Sure.
C
He's going to make some awesome, awesome females.
B
Yeah, he's got a killer look to him too. He's. He looks like a herd bull. Big time. Real stout and big backed.
C
Yep.
A
Yes, sir, for sure. Well, one that caught my attention while running through the catalog earlier was lots 92 through 94 being out of the prosperous bull. And he's his picture is there in the catalog under 93 lots or the lot? 93. In my mind, he's extremely unique for Red Angus bull in terms of his color, but also his added feature and his density. And that's a real rugged, rugged bull that has a lot of. Lot of quality to him, and I bet his calves look very, very similar as well.
C
Yeah, 92. He's long.
A
He.
C
He carries a little bit of birth, but I think, you know, the way he's shaped, I wouldn't worry about anything with the birth weight at all. But he is so massive. Heavy, heavy bull. Gets out and moves like a cat. Yeah, he's. He's. He's a stud.
D
Yeah, that. That prosperous 10K. He was our pick out of that sale. I believe he was the highest seller that year. And he's working right now on the cows. Held his. Held his weight easy keeping bull just gets around good. And one of those bulls that you got to stop and look at again, he's just picked from behind. Just a good phenotype bull that has just really done well for us.
C
I think we would have got him maybe like 13, 14 months of age, and we threw him in a big pasture. And, you know, a lot of times some of them bulls fall apart that you buy or whatever, but he never did. He just stepped, kept with it, rebounded really good, and we got him in to get ready for. Get ready for a sire picture. And it didn't take much food. He always just kept his weight really well. So it's exciting to see that happen. Yeah, we're excited about him. He's a young bull for us, and I think he's going to have a long.
B
Those daughters look phenomenal out of him, too. I noticed. Cool looking.
A
Dark.
B
Dark cherry red and cool looking.
C
Yeah, exactly. And he is dark red. So everybody's kind of excited about the. The dark cherry stuff.
A
Yeah, absolutely. Well, next we run into the catalog where you highlight this year's sale highlights. Y' all are selling a select group of high quality springboard open heifers. Talk to me about the ones that maybe mean the most to y' all or what y' all are the most excited for maybe some of the sire groups that those heifers are out of. And then after that, we'll proceed with some other things.
C
Yeah, the. There. There's nine spring heifers. We're selling lot 102. She's really cool. She. She looks like a show heifer. She. She struts her stuff. She's out of The Dominion
A
Grantland.
C
Back to Grantland, which is exciting. Yeah, she, she gets out move, moves really good, shows off. It'll be exciting to see what comes out of her in the Future.
D
At this 102 heifer is one of those heifers that's, you know, these, these top nine are the top pick out of those spring calves. And this is one heifer that's tough to let go. It's, you want to keep, you want to keep her but you, you know, you can't keep them all. And we're trying to offer the best that we can offer and, and, and she's one that's gonna go out there and have a bright future.
C
We picked these nine from like 150. So we, they're good. I mean the whole group was good but we wanted to bring something good to the table and make people, you know, catch people's eyes. So we gotta, we decided to sell them.
B
So yeah, there's what couple cashmere heifers in here. Some Grant lands, the pic, you know that we're selling the Roadblock and a couple elevates. I mean they're all just super typey, cool looking females. And then, and then the other deal this year is we're selling that pick of the three. Pick a three in the entire fall. I mean these things haven't been touched. This is their keeper heifers, Weston. I mean these are 100% all of their keeper heifers in the entire fall program. So I mean it'll, it'll make your eyes pop out walking through these females. I mean there's, there's donor caliber females in there that people have the option to pick three of the very best. If you want to build a program around them. I mean you could, you could definitely go in there and just make some big, make a big splash in that Angus breed. I mean these guys have been building this herd for years and just to be able to come in and pick three of your, your favorites, the entire pick of the whole fall crop would be a really unique opportunity here for this year.
C
Hey, we're super excited about this group of heifers. There's 140. So it's a awesome big group of heifers. And you know, I think, I think what's exciting is you know, we go through there and we call these things strictly off of phenotype and then we'll feed them for a couple more months and, and we'll make another cut and then we always do the DNA late and it's kind of like Christmas when you get the DNA and find out who they really are. But we're not picking off EPDs. We' picking off of really sire groups. It's just they have to look good to stay here. They have to have a good feet, good feet on them. It's all just eye appeal. And then we'll DNA them later, get the information and then we'll roll with that. But it's, it's an incredible set of females.
A
Absolutely.
B
I was going to say before we get too close to the end there, I mean this year's set of bulls that we're selling, I mean there's give or take 35 heifer bulls selling sale this year. So if you got heifers to breed, there's a good chance you'll find what you're wanting to find what you're needing here at Smokey Y this year at the bull sale. I mean there's, there's, there's at least 35 bulls selling in this sale that are long yearlings or two year olds that are ready to work and go on a set on your heifer projects. And I, I just think that's unique for one place to have that many to offer.
A
Absolutely, completely agree. And you talk about this huge variety of heifers and that that are incredible and I think that goes to speak volumes when you offer lot 111, especially offering pick of the heifers. Talking about what that's all about, obviously I'll have a huge variety of heifers to select from which is extremely unique in that regard. So talk to me about what that lot is like and what entails with
B
it picking the heifers. I mean some of the, some of the sire groups. What are they Kelly?
C
The sire groups. It would be everything here be the custom made, the Dominion, the cashmere, the fundament. We would have got fundamental up at Cockburn and Canada. The McAllister, MRLA, McAllister, Commissioner K71, he's, he's a good stud. And then we actually have a Larson Huckleberry, he's a black red carrier. A kind of a unique deal. He, he was using a bull that, a high dollar bull that he bought and he flushed it to one of our cows and we bet we bought the best son son off of that deal. And then there's the, the Powder river that we purchased at the Namkin Elevate which is really cool. We're really excited about that. Bulls, females and then go. And then of course the Grant Land and the coming in hot and the Weber declare.
B
Yeah, there's 145 of them to pick from guys. I mean this is a pretty unique opportunity. It's going to be, it's going to be, it's going to be awesome because I mean it's hard. I mean you walk through them things. The consistency of that set of females is just freaking amazing.
A
I think absolutely 100% very, very excited that I wish I time to go up there and look at them all. To be honest with you. It sounds like that they're all phenotypically phenomenal. They're backed by great bulls that y' all been able to utilize heavily out there. So is there anything that y' all would like to tack on before we end the preview?
C
I don't think so.
B
Yeah, well, I mean you guys put on a pretty good feed that night before people come out and it's, it's
C
a lot of fun.
B
If you had never been there, we sure invite you to come out because these guys don't hold back. I mean they've, they put on a good me and it's just good camaraderie. There's a lot of like minded people that's there and good cowboys to visit with and it's, it's just a really fun sale at the end.
A
Yeah, for sure.
D
We, we just want to invite everybody out and we have a, the night before the, we have all the bulls ready, viewing and then yeah, like Mike was saying, really good feed the night before where everybody can eat. They have a band show up and just, just a good environment. People can talk about cattle and, and just get out and enjoy themselves. And Then Monday the 9th is the actual bull sale. We'll serve lunch that day and, and get the sale started at 1:00'. Clock. And one thing I want to say about the bulls, you know, just kind of what Mike was going off with the heifers, the consistency. I think this set of bulls is the most consistent set of bulls we've raised from top to bottom.
