Welcome to the Empty Netters podcast.
Dustin Bedroya
Can you believe what this has become? There was a full 48 hours where
CP
I felt like I was like literally Superman.
Dan Powers
Jumbo loves playing Fortnite. So does he gets on the sticks. Did TR show you the sauna cycle or was that already.
Dustin Bedroya
No, I invented that. Almost a year now that I haven't taken a body check. That's kind of nice.
Dan Powers
So we are back. We are horned up and we are going deep.
CP
Finished tonight with some chicken fingers and a few Guinnesses.
Dustin Bedroya
Ran into you guys.
Dan Powers
And that's where this pod came to life. Ice is ready. And we're back with another episode of the Empty Neighers podcast brought to you by BetMGM. I'm your host, Dan Powers. Sitting here with the doctor on the sticks rocking a great t shirt.
Dustin Bedroya
AC Daisy Ace Daisy rights.
Dan Powers
And then also pretty great shirt. Over here is on the other co host CP with a shirt that he's had since probably 2007.
Dustin Bedroya
As always, Dustin Bedroya. Yeah, it's a good one, Dirt dog.
Dan Powers
I pointed that shirt out to Loop the other day because he was like, how old is that shirt? And I was like, look at the color of the stitches on the shirt. That's like the color that the shirt initially was like on your shoulder.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, right there.
Dan Powers
Like that whole shirt was that blue at one point? Yeah. It now looks like a periwinkle purple.
Dustin Bedroya
And maybe they should be sold like this cause it looks awesome.
CP
Well, they do that now. They're pre distressed shirts.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, right. Pay big dollars.
CP
I don't prefer it. Dude, you gotta earn that.
Dustin Bedroya
You know what really sucks is they started selling hats like afraid here and like, you know, a pre distressed hat basically. And I have, I have too many hats now. But I love hat. A big hat guy. And I used to not have a lot of hats, but would wear hats a lot. So I would wear a hat to death. And I actually really liked it when it became beat up, you know, reached a point where it's too beat up. But in that moment where it was like peeling here and there, whatever, I was like, God, this hat is awesome. It's my favorite hat. I wear it every day and it's great. And then they started being like, get yours now at Abercrombie or whatever. And I was like, you dude. Like I have been putting in hours and days and months to get this happen.
CP
You get it to look like Quint from Jaws.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, dude, this is some fucking bullshit, dude.
Dan Powers
I used to have a Calgary Flames hat in my Jerome McGinla days. And it was like one day I was doing something and the rim scraped against something and it peeled right here. And I was like, that is so sick. So I literally took it and I went like this on the pavement.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. Yeah, dude. Like.
Dan Powers
And I remember shortly after that moment, looking at the hat and going, I am a loser piece of shit.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
This is so dumb and inauthentic and I hate it. And I ruined my hat. But, you know, it is what it is.
Dustin Bedroya
It is what it what it is. Sometimes I call it what it is.
Dan Powers
We got a lot of hockey to talk about today. We're going to get into some World cup stuff as well. We've got a beer league hotline, but we are chugging up to the first of July when free agency officially begins. We had the NHL draft. Teams are making moves left and right as we talked about last week. It is everything that we ever dreamed of. So we've got to just keep on trucking, talking about all the news. We're going to start with maybe the hottest potential. Actually, I don't even know if it's the hottest, but there's so many people who have yet to move. We're going to start with Robo Jason Robertson. We've got a lot of chatter going on about the guy. First and foremost, Robo turned down 15 million to go to Seattle. What do you think that says about the state of the Seattle Kraken? Dude,
Dustin Bedroya
here's an interesting thing. Biz, I think it was this year Biz went on TNT with Bettman. Yeah, with our goat commissioner. Bettman love Gary. And he said, does the league have a state tax. No state tax problem. And Bettman put him in a fucking locker and was like, no, dude. Like, yeah, those teams are winning right now. And that's. It's. It's recency bias, etc. Etc. And the. I think he's right in. I think they're kind of both right. I think Gary is right in that, yes, the teams that have won made us go, oh, my God, only the state tax, don't state tech teams will ever win again. Yeah. But also it is a factor. It's not a nothing. 100% right. And when I saw this first come about, I was like, oh, you know, it must be a state tax thing. And then everybody was like, washington doesn't have state tax. This is a nightmare. But then I saw this tweet and I'm like, loop where I just read tweets and then they are real to me. So I don't know if this is true, but it said something about the new millionaires tax in Seattle or Washington has passed something that they tax the fuck out of you.
CP
Yeah, they're trying to do that in California. This next ballot too.
Dan Powers
Yeah, yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
So they were like, well, it basically is a state, it is a tax thing. Is the reason he's turning us down because he's going, okay, if I go there, I get rinsed on that because I'm a.
Dan Powers
Because I'm a millionaire.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. So. So maybe it actually, in fact is. Is a tax thing. But I would. I would take this argument that he gave to Bettman and push it slightly to this. We are entering an era of the NHL, I think, where we're having a. Teams are having an issue of if you are not a desirable place to play or particularly good team, then no one will ever want to go there.
Dan Powers
Well, man, you're spot on. And Bettman's response was spot on. But I don't even know how many times we can talk about this. I feel bad for, like, loyal, dedicated listeners. They've probably heard me go on and on about this a million times. But I. I said this last week in Hockey Talk. Every team has their advantages. It's like, I can't. Someone put. Posed the question, should teams that don't have or teams that aren't in a no state tax just a fold?
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And I'm like, dude, you're being bitches.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
And I hate. I don't want that to sound harsh or negative, but, like, it's just every team, every city has their own advantages. You have to play to said advantages. You are not allowed to be
Dustin Bedroya
the
Dan Powers
Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Boston Bruins, the New York Rangers, the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks and complain about no state tax. Yeah. Because you are an original 16. You have so much history. You have so many cups. You have the allure of a major, big, awesome city. Detroit. I know some people would say, Detroit's gas. I love Detroit. I really do. You are not allowed to be those fans and say those things about yourself and then turn around and complain about no state tax. When a player would rather go. Like, when Dylan Larkin's like, I'd rather play in Tampa or Florida. You're not allowed to be like, this classic no state tax. Because if the Detroit Red Wings over these last six or seven years had had the roster construction that Carolina has had or that Anaheim has had and the good contracts like that, we would not have this issue. Dylan Larkin would not Be leaving because they would be competing for Cups. You have to play into your advantages. Like, if you are a city like a Boston, you need to whip everyone into shape and really let the. Like, if you're talking to free agents, you go, dude, Boston is the best sports town in the fucking country. Yep. You come here and you are a fucking legend because you play for a Boston team. But it's not psychotic like some of the Canadian markets with the media. The media is pretty chill to us. All of these neighborhoods, the North End, the Seaport, all these places are so sick. We get to go to Celtics games, Pat's games, you get to go to Fenway Park. The food here is insane with fucking clam chowder and lobster rolls and blah. Those are your advantages. I think we see it a lot of times, like with Carolina, like with Florida, the way that Zito came in and with the ownership, they redid all of the facilities for the players. That stuff makes you want to play for a team. That's what's going on in Anaheim. I mentioned this a little while ago, and someone was like, bro, said Anaheim. And I'm like, yeah. Do you talk to any of the players? Their practice facility, their training rooms? Like, look at Utah. We did that whole tour. We posted that video. If you haven't watched it, go watch it. Their training facility is insane. So insane that the Jazz were like, bro, yeah, redo ours.
Dustin Bedroya
What the fuck?
Dan Powers
Literally, the Jazz play here, saw what the Mammoth did, and they were like, yo, Ryan Smith, what the fuck?
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And now they're redoing theirs. Attached to the mammoth facility. That is the stuff that makes players want to play there. That's what makes guys sign team friendly deals or sign early because they're like, this is the shit, dude.
Dustin Bedroya
I love the idea of basketball dudes, like, they get to that facility and they're like, this is amazing. And then they're like, yep, here is the 25 dude steam room so we can all steam together. And the basketball guys are like, why
Dan Powers
don't you guys do that? And I'm like, yeah. They look at the size of the cold tub and they go, that's a pretty big for a single cold tub. And they're like, oh, no, no. Eight of us.
Dustin Bedroya
We get in together. You don't want us to do this together.
Dan Powers
You guys don't get butt naked after a steam and then get in a cold tub together.
Dustin Bedroya
The NBA's like, what? Hold on. The fuck is going on in here?
CP
Pop a couple dirty sodas.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
CP
Get in that steam Room boys, they
Dan Powers
look at the showers and they go. So the shower in the hockey locker room is just one big room.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, it is.
Dan Powers
And the hockey guys are. They're in there soaping themselves up like a lot. Sudsing their ass going, yeah, A lot
Dustin Bedroya
of three in one in here. Yeah.
Dan Powers
Dude, you don't do that too.
Dustin Bedroya
Fuck.
Dan Powers
So, yeah, I just think it's. I think it's. I'm so done with this conversation. Because it is not an issue. They should never change it because all of these places are these places for a reason.
CP
I have an easy fix.
Dan Powers
Yeah, tell me.
CP
This is all we do. We eliminate state tax across the United States.
Dustin Bedroya
I love it. Now we're talking in. Couldn't be more in.
Dan Powers
Yeah. Instead of going, let's figure out a way to wipe that out as an advantage. Other state taxes need to go. Wait, why are we doing that?
Dustin Bedroya
We're not taxing anybody.
CP
There we go.
Dustin Bedroya
Question for you, Dan.
Dan Powers
I do want to get back to Seattle, though.
Dustin Bedroya
Well. Cause question for you. Seattle, I think, is a really fun city. I've only been there a handful of times, and granted they were cool events, but I had a great time. Good sports town. They love those people. Love their sports teams very much. And Seattle, if you have a millionaires tax, just call that a tax issue or whatever. Your solve, in my opinion, would be to make Jason Robertson the second highest paid player in the league, which he is not. And I love Robo, but like, he should not be paid more than anyone a living other than Krill. And Krill's contract shouldn't even count. So I kind of think they did. They were like, other teams have advantages that we don't have. So here's 15 million a year.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
They kind of did what they. Like they did what they needed to do. And he still went like this.
CP
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
Receive this fucking frontal finger.
Dan Powers
Yeah. I'm not gonna lie. I think that it was a pretty. Like, if I'm a Seattle fan, I'm. That hurt a little bit.
Dustin Bedroya
Oh, yeah.
Dan Powers
I'm like, ah, damn.
CP
Why is Robo so mercurial, dude?
Dan Powers
That's what we're about to get into.
Dustin Bedroya
He's one of the greatest sagas of all time.
Dan Powers
That's what we're about to get into. Great fucking question. Evil my. I don't. I'm not the biggest fan of Seattle. Seattle people. Don't freak out at me. I really like Seattle. I'm just. I'm not gonna sit here and lie and say that it's one of my favorite cities. But Seattle's great. There's a lot of cool shit. But it is also one of those things that's like, it's not the best weather. Summer's cool. But as we know, like, these guys all leave in the summer. Yeah, they all go home to wherever they're from. So that's really not your advantage. But on the other hand, I think kudos to Robo for not taking that deal, just to take it and take the bag. I don't think, like, if you're Seattle, I'm like, that's an albatross contract, dude. Like, I already. We said so many times in Minnesota they had to pay Krill to keep him. And I stand by that. But when he then signed a $17 million deal, we were like, fuck, Come on.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Like, that hurts. Especially when you look at Carolina and you look at, you know, who is like, what is the number of the highest paper? Look, even look at Vegas. Everyone was like, vegas, they just do this. But, like, they. Mitch is making the most money on that team. It's not that much.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
So it's like, that would have just been a huge, huge deal. So I'm like, end of the day, I'm glad for you, Seattle, that that didn't happen. But you do want to see Seattle start, like, winning and, like, attracting real, real good free agents or real good trade signings. So, like, that was kind of a bummer. But it gets to the Jason Robertson thing. I think at the end of the day, he does not want to leave Dallas. I really don't think so. And I think it's clear that they made a decision when they traded for and then signed Miko Ratnan, that they were like, we're choosing Miko Ratnan over Robertson? Yeah. I think they made that decision a year ago. And now we are coming to the end of the road where Robo is going like this. I would like 14 million. And they're like, we can't because we paid Miko 12. And he's like, well, what the fuck? And, dude,
Dustin Bedroya
dude, that is what he's saying. He's going like this. What the fuck, bro? But I don't know why he wasn't saying that a year ago. I don't know why he didn't make peace with that like the rest of us in the world did. And don't you think.
Dan Powers
Well, I remember, like, you and I were talking about it. Like, I assumed they would just make a move. I was like, they'll trade someone and they'll figure this out. And it Feels like they. They are. They're trying.
Dustin Bedroya
Well, so it was interesting because Jim Neal said after this blew up, he made a comment that was like, we're going to figure this out.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
But then there was also some reports yesterday that said Montreal was. And the report was that Robo would sign there if they could make a deal there. He said he would do that. And that's a. That would be super exciting. They're awesome. And he's.
Dan Powers
And they just made a sick move. They traded Gallagher. Yeah. At 50 retention. So, like, cleared up like 3.5 or so. 3.25 or something.
Dustin Bedroya
You know, so I'm getting Dallas saying yes, and then Montreal saying, you know, no. Come here. A lot of reports, a lot of things swirling, I think. And we have said again on the show a million times, the contract timing is what matters, not just player ability.
CP
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
But it is tough, I think, if Jason Robertson is asking for that much money because you chose Mikko at less and Miko is better and Robo is nasty. But I think you take me. I think pretty much every GM in the league would go, give me Miko rant and over Jason Robertson, and you have him for less. And Robo's asking for more than. That would be. That would still be the second or that would be tied with Leon. Isn't Leon 14?
Dan Powers
Yes.
Dustin Bedroya
So I'm like, you want Leon Draisaitl money, dude? And he should. He should be asking for that. But if I'm Dallas, I'm like, no, dude, you know what?
Dan Powers
I'm glad you brought that up. I respectfully disagree.
Dustin Bedroya
That he shouldn't get it or that he should ask for it.
Dan Powers
That he should ask for. Like, I am a. I'm a big Robo guy.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And Evan asked that great question. I don't know, dude. Like, he. Every. Every time this. This player comes up, we hear all of these different stories and these different. All like, oh, he's this. He's that. Like, we've heard the. We're not breaking any news here. Like, we've heard the he's soft thing.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And we always clap back at that. And our good buddy JD had that awesome interview with him where he's like, this kid's amazing. He's played fucking 82 games. 5. 1, 2, 3, 4 straight years. 74 before that. And, like, he is a perennial dude. He had 45 goals and 96 points this year.
Dustin Bedroya
There's literally one bad fact about him.
Dan Powers
He's literally had 79 points, 109 points. 80, 80, 96 like, he's so good.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
And, you know, he didn't get picked for Team usa. That made people start asking questions.
Dustin Bedroya
That's the one bad fact. And I don't even know if it's right or not. It's just those guys were kind of like.
Dan Powers
But at the same time, it's like, Lane Hudson didn't get picked for Team usa.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
You know, Cole Caulfield didn't get picked for Team usa. It doesn't mean everything. So I'm just. I don't get it around him. You know, I'm not in that locker room. Don't know him personally. Not going to pretend like I know the ins and outs, but I'm like, I think this guy's a great fucking player, and I think he's always going to perform. I believe that he would sign for exactly what Miko makes in Dallas. I think if Dallas could move it around and they went here 7 by 12, he would go deal. Do you think that if Tyler Sagan's number was not on these books, he would be signed in Dallas already?
Dustin Bedroya
Yes.
Dan Powers
Me too.
Dustin Bedroya
And that's where I'll be living.
Dan Powers
Well, that is why I look at Nil and I'm like, you gotta do something, dude. You have to make a move. And that doesn't mean with Sagan, because, like, if you're. Sagan has one year left, and I don't think Sagan is going. Even if they want 50% retention, he's not going to waive his no move just to be like, yeah, I'll help you out. Like, he's like, no, dude, I'm going to sit here and retire in Dallas. Yeah. I don't even know if he'll play again after this. But. But it's like, oh, I don't know. Now we're hearing Thomas Harley trade talks, which is nuts. But, like, if they trade Thomas Harley, you probably sign Robertson. So what's nuts is everyone's talking about all of these different teams. Where is he going to end up? I personally think it's Dallas still. I think Dallas is the number one option.
Dustin Bedroya
It should be. And the fucked up part for them is they can easily win a Cup with the team that they have. However this shakes out, let's say they lose Robertson and keep Harley and whatever. Let's say they trade Harley, keep Robertson. There's plenty, plenty of versions of the Dallas Stars that can win a Cup next year with whatever team they have. But it just re emphasizes for me how fucking melt it was to not have won in the last three years, when you had everybody, you had everybody, and this was the time. And we said, what a roster. But I said, pretty soon you're going to lose someone, because that's how the world works. Pretty soon all the contracts run up and you lose someone and it's hard to win. But, man, dude, you are going to look back and be like, fuck me, how did we not even fucking get that done this whole time?
Dan Powers
Couldn't agree more, dude. Do you think there are other teams that stand out to you? It's like, if you had to see Robo go somewhere else, where is it? Um, because we've heard Montreal.
CP
That would be so cool.
Dustin Bedroya
That actually would be cool, I think.
Dan Powers
I love that, too. Like, Montreal does currently have the space to fit, like, if. If. Let's say he wanted 14. Like, they've got 14, but they.
Dustin Bedroya
Oh, yeah, that's a good idea.
Dan Powers
They've got, you know, a couple of things to do. Bullduke is an rfa. Doc is an rfa, I imagine. Certainly Bullduke is coming back. I would imagine Doc coming back. They still got Arbor Jac Guy as an RFA to sign.
Dustin Bedroya
Just looking at cap space, obviously anyone could make any moves. I would love him on Pittsburgh. Evan, that would be awesome.
CP
You speak in my language, baby. I mean, love him on Pittsburgh. Me too. We'll see what happens.
Dustin Bedroya
Do you wonder.
Dan Powers
So here's the thing. I was talking to a player in the league who is a UFA who is looking to resign, and this player is likely not going to go back to the team he was just on. And he was like, all I want to do is win. I just want to go somewhere that has a chance at contending and winning a cup, at least fighting for a cup. Like, I need to be in playoffs. And I was like, fuck, yeah. Robo is so young. That's another thing people forget. Like, he's 26.
CP
Oh, yeah. He's got 26.
Dan Powers
And no offense, Evan. There's part of me that's like, with what we keep talking about with Pittsburgh, I'm like, does it make sense for Pittsburgh to trade for Robo and immediately give him $14 million? Because I'm like, you guys are like, you just snuck into the playoffs and lost to the Flyers in five.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
So I'm like, are you guys in a position to be paying someone $14 million?
CP
Well, that doesn't mean that I don't want to trick him as a Penguins fan. Yeah, like, psych. We might not even get the playoffs. Although it would be Fucking cool. If, like, I mean, it just really depends. Like, they're not. Like, he could be the franchise player. Yeah. But he's never going to be the franchise franchise player as long as Sid and Gino and those guys.
Dustin Bedroya
But, I mean, imagine him with Sid, though, like, for Gensel. And I mean, Gentle's nasty anyway, but just like, putting him on a wing with Sid, I'm like, yeah, incoming 50.
Dan Powers
So, you know, you know what I find super interesting? A bunch of people keep bringing up the California teams for Robo, Anaheim and San Jose.
CP
Oh, San Jose.
Dan Powers
Not even the Kings. Not the Kings, because it's like, Anaheim, San Jose have great trade pieces that they could do.
CP
Right, right, right.
Dan Powers
And he's a California kid. Makes a ton of sense to me. I'm like, sure. What I find interesting about the Sharks, man, is they have, let me see, 39.4. They got all the money in the world. But when you look at the Sharks, you've got next. I mean, it's like, the extensions can happen now.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Mack and Will are about to extend, and you are giving Macklin Celebrini literally all of King Midas gold, Right?
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And it's funny to think about, shortly after that, you're like, next season, Misa is going to be up for extension.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
And then same with Dickinson. And now you're going to have in a couple of years after that, Stenberg. And it's like, you. They have an embarrassment of riches in all of these guys that they've signed. But, like, holy shit, they have such talent that all these guys are going to have to have to get paid. And also, people forget this. Askarov is up this year. He is an RFA next year, and he only makes 2 million. And it's like you have couture's 8 million that's going to come off after this year, which is great. But, like, the Sharks need to remember they have a lot of people to pay. And while Robo is nasty when you are like, you eventually need to make Macklin the most expensive player on this team.
Dustin Bedroya
Correct.
Dan Powers
Are you sure you want to give Robo 14 million right now? So I'm actually not entirely sure I would do it. Like, don't. Don't get too greedy with how close you were to playoffs this year and maybe just, like, settle down.
CP
Yeah. Do you think he wants to be, like, the star somewhere, or does he want to just be a part of a team that's going to win and doesn't care about that shit?
Dustin Bedroya
You know what I Mean, Yeah, it's a good question.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
CP
Does he want to play second fiddle?
Dustin Bedroya
He probably. He strikes me as a guy that doesn't need to be on the billboards.
CP
Same.
Dan Powers
I think I agree with that.
Dustin Bedroya
And he would be. I don't think he'd be like, oh, I'm not going there if I'm the best player. But I think he's like, whatever, dude. I just want to be part of it. And the big question, because this was the whole JD Thing was like, can he carry a line? And JD was like, I'm not sure if he can. And then he was like, actually, he definitely can. And I think he can, but I just think he's. So this is kind of unfair. Cause it's a winger. There's few wingers I think who have ever played who are truly like, you can play me with literally anyone. Like, put. David Posternak is one of them right now.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Like Patrick Kane.
Dustin Bedroya
Patrick Kane in his peak, you know, But Robo is. Robo can carry a line, but I just think he's so heightened by. If you put him with a Cid or somebody like that, I'm like, oh, my God. He pokemons himself into the next. What are they? Stages.
Dan Powers
He's evolution.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
CP
Well, yeah. And he's also like, to me, 26. He's still got, like, you said so much. He's gonna get better. You would think.
Dan Powers
I mean, dude, he. What an. What an amazing situation. Like, we talked about so many of these guys that are. Are signing deals. We talked about Radish, right? Like, Darren Radish is 30 and you know, he signed that deal. You give Robo a seven year deal, an eight year deal. Let's say eight.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
By the end of that deal, he's only 34. Like, he is in the perfect sweet spot for a, like, major contract.
CP
Oh, yeah.
Dan Powers
And again, this is what I don't get about the guy. He's just amazing.
Dustin Bedroya
Every year.
Dan Powers
Crazy. Like, I truly. My dick gets hard as a fan when you go like this. Since 20, 21, 22, this guy's gone 74 games, 41 goals, 79 points, 82 games, 40, 46 goals, 109 points, 82 games, 29 goals, 80 points, 82 games, 35 goals, 80 points, 82 games', 45 goals, 96 points. I'm like, that is a fucking stud.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. Yeah.
Dan Powers
That is a thoroughbred stud. And he's also fucking like six, three. And just like he does it on the power play. He does it five. I don't get. I don't get what we're talking about.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, what are we talking about?
Dan Powers
So again, I just, I continue to circle back to Dallas. I'm like, you have to do something like make a move and go sign exactly what moo signed. For the love of fucking God. Yep, we're done here. So it just like I, I, I do not get it. Boston Bruins make a trade. I, we, we are the, we are the leaders of the them picks movement. And I got a little reactionary on, on the bird. When the initial report was a couple of first round picks for J.J. pater in Boston, I was like, yikes. I literally said the word yikes. Yeah. But then people were like, dude, you always say fuck them picks. And I was like, you know what? You guys are absolutely fuck them. I think it is, I was talking to Grinnell. I think it is rich. I think it is a rich deal. I always get worried when you have a player who's only 24 years old and now is on his third team.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, crazy.
Dan Powers
Like, it makes me be like, what's going on here? And frankly, Paterka was on Buffalo in the era of Buffalo. That was like, we suck.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Like you guys are, you're struggling and you shouldn't be struggling. But in his last year, 77 games in Buffalo, sorry, 27 goals, 68 points. Like that's a, that was the era of J.J. paterka that Utah traded. What do you have?
Dustin Bedroya
68 points.
Dan Powers
68 points in 77 games. But then he goes to Utah and last year, 25 goals, 47 points in 82 games. So like two, regardless of the fact that he's on a good little contract, I think 7.4 a year, he's 24 years old, a couple of first round picks on the surface for a 47 point guy, when he just went to an insanely young and exciting Utah team with guys like Schmaltz, with guys like Cooley, with guys like Keller Gunther, you're kind of like, what's what? How is this not a fit? Yeah, that was the big. Because all the reports are like, he went to Utah. It wasn't a fit. Yeah. And I'm like, why? The first round picks though, were 23 this year. Trash. And then the 20, 28 Florida top 10 protected, that's going to be pick 30.
Dustin Bedroya
That's correct. Yeah.
Dan Powers
So trash.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
So I'm like, you know what? Absolutely. Those picks are fucking meaningless. Go get a good player. And the fact that he's under a contract is great. So I like it. I love the Sturm element.
Dustin Bedroya
Oh, yeah, true.
Dan Powers
He's got a big time German connection with the coaching staff there. Do you think this answers the David Posternak being like, yo, go get me help. Like, is he like, nice, good job.
Dustin Bedroya
So that. That's my only big question because I like the player a lot. I'm actually really excited to have him on the Bruins. But it is funny. And this is. This is nowhere near this bad, so nobody overreacts. When I come out of my mouth, my first thought that popped into my head was when McDavid was like, I will fucking walk, dude. I will leave this city to die if you don't do something. And they're like this, well, great news. We traded for Tristan Jari. And he was like, what? Yeah. So this is nowhere near that bad. But it is funny that David Posternak, for the first time, in my opinion, ever publicly, was like, yo, dude, I need elite talent on this team because I would like to win a cup. And we go, okay, Paterka's on your line.
CP
Now.
Dustin Bedroya
I just don't think he goes, I thank you so much. Asked and answered. I think he goes, okay, but what else? And then I'm kind of like, well, that was two firsts. So. What do you mean, what else? Yeah, that was the whole pantry, you know? Now we can only get something if we trade a guy, you know, so it's just. Love the player. Genuinely very excited for him to be on the Bruins. I don't think if I'm David Postnak, I rest easy, head on pillow at night, going, wow, they did it. They listened to me.
Dan Powers
Yeah, I hear you. Like, to me, everyone was freak. Every Boston fan was freaking out, being like, wake up, Don. Wake up, wake up. We finally have picks, prospects, blah, blah, blah. Now, listen, I will say the Bruins prospect pool has been better than it in a long time. The fact that they went out and got a top six guy without moving one of those is great. That is good. No doubt about it. I agree. It's not. I'm not even sure if this addition beats Buffalo.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, right.
Dan Powers
You know what I mean?
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dan Powers
So, like, when you look at it, impasta and McAvoy and sway are like, we want to win a cup. Yeah, that didn't do it.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
So, yeah, I'm with you, dude. Like, Boston, I'm like, good move. You got to do more. And, man, I keep going back to. This was another fight. Like, you look at their lines right now. Paterka, zaka, pasta. I think a lot of People would be like, pavel Zaka is not a first line center.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Regardless of how good he's been and how good he is with pasta. I think that is another thing you run into where you're like, that is not a first line center. Your second line is Middlestadt, Elias Lindholm and Morgan Geeke. I think a lot of people would say, you know, we're having the same conversation. So regardless of whether. And listen in these breakdowns, Hagens isn't in there. Who knows what's going to happen with Letourneau. Is he going back to bc?
Dustin Bedroya
I'm not sure if he said.
Dan Powers
But you've got the, you know, who's the dean off in Minton? You probably. Hagens is there. Like you would hope. Higgins plays 82 games next year in the NHL.
Dustin Bedroya
Yes, desperately.
Dan Powers
But someone brought up the question. The Zach Rensky deal is still going on to like try kind of transition to that. The other Boston move was they traded Fabian Lysel, their former first round pick for undrafted Yvonne Ivan from Colorado.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, yeah.
Dan Powers
And that is just like we talk about Sweeney's drafting and we've been giving him a lot of flowers as he's deserved. But the mismanagement of Lycil is insane.
Dustin Bedroya
Absolutely makes me want to die. Yeah.
Dan Powers
Like that is a first round pick who had multiple seasons in the HL where he was sniffing like point per game and it kept being like, when does he get getting called up? When is he getting called up? There are multiple big time trade packages, if you remember, that included Lycel. And Boston was like, we're not moving Lysol. And now you've traded him for an undrafted player. You're kind of like, dude, what happened here? It's so crazy. It is tough. But the Zachary thing keeps coming up. And something was floated the other day that was like Mason Lori, first round pick, and Hagans. And someone was like, you do not trade. You're the first time you've had a center prospect in a long time for a defenseman. And I was like, you sure as shit do.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
This guy just won the fucking Norris Trophy.
Dustin Bedroya
And a gold medal.
Dan Powers
And a gold medal. And he plays well with Charlie. If that is a deal that Columbus would say yes to and you don't say yes, you are fucking mental.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And if you are worried about trading James Higgins for Zach Warrensky, that's no, like, think about how complimentary that is to James Hagen.
Dustin Bedroya
Yes.
Dan Powers
Like if James Higgins can get you the best defenseman in the NHL, you get It.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
So that's another move. I know it's not top six help, but like, you put Zach Renski on that left side playing with Charlie McAvoy, that is immediately in the argument for, if not certainly the best defensive pairing in the NHL. So you.
Dustin Bedroya
And that's. That can. That can win you playoff series. Chara and Seidenberg won playoff series alone. It was insane. I actually really liked, by the way, Utah swinging that 23 pick to the wings for Cosa.
Dan Powers
Me too.
Dustin Bedroya
I was like, oh, that's a nice little. Nice little wheel and deal there, dude.
Dan Powers
Because I think veggie is great. Yeah. Veggie is another one where I'm like, yeah, I'm not entirely sure. Veggie is like, is Veggie gonna win you a cup?
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And I've believed in Kosa for a long time. I was shocked when Detroit was like, we're gonna trade Xhosa.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Again, internally, it always freaks you out. You're like, well, what do they know?
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
But I love that.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
It's a fucking great move. Okay, what's the next one?
Dustin Bedroya
Pavel Dorofiev. Skorofiev. Dan texted me. I was on a. I think I was on with a wedding planner. I think I was. I was literally zooming a wedding planner. And Dan texted me, dorofiev was just traded to the Rangers. And I texted back for Shesty, because that is the only possible thing that I'd be willing to trade Dorfev for, considering he is either the future of the Golden Knights forwards or he is in a package for Matthews or McDavid. And who am I to ever question Vegas's roster management? But that was it. Like, Dorothiev was the signature chip to get you one of the premier centers in the league or you keep him full stop.
CP
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
And the knights received the 26th pick in the draft. A third rounder and a conditional first in 28, which I'm sure is some bullshit that they won't get, because usually maybe it was a performance base, but like the marshy one, for example, was if the Panthers make the conference finals are better, blah, blah, blah. If it's anything like that. The Rangers aren't making shit anytime soon, so this won't be that good of a pick. Maybe. Maybe it falls to a second.
CP
I don't know.
Dustin Bedroya
This. It makes no sense to me.
Dan Powers
The deal.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, it has to be. I assumed they were like, oh, they're getting more picks to do something with, but then they traded that pick to the Habs and Like, I just. I was like, oh, I see. They're trading Dorofea for all these picks, and then they're gonna take all those picks, and then here comes Larkin or something.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
But then it kind of, like, everything moved. I do not. I cannot process this decision.
Dan Powers
Listen, I really liked the move. It shows the Rangers being aggressive.
Dustin Bedroya
Oh, I love it for New York. Sorry? I love it for New York. I'm saying Vegas must have lost their mind.
Dan Powers
Oh, you're out of your mind. This is like, you use what you just got and you go and get Dylan Larkin.
Dustin Bedroya
Right. But with what? They traded the pick already to Montreal. Like, they got the pick from the. They got the first round from the Rangers and then traded it to Montreal. And I'm like, wasn't that part of the Larkin package? And they're like, whoa, maybe it was supposed to be, Whoops, we forgot and already traded it away.
Dan Powers
I just still. I think that they. They know what they're doing.
Dustin Bedroya
Me too. That's why I said, who am I to question Vegas? But it is crazy to me that I'm like, dorothyv should have been a chip to get something huge. And currently, all the things you got back from Dorfiev, you have already traded away. Currently.
Dan Powers
Yeah. They just kept flipping it, right?
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
They went 26 for 28 and then 28 for 29.
Dustin Bedroya
And I'm like.
Dan Powers
And then they just used it like they drafted somewhere.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. And I'm like, whoops. Wasn't that supposed to be the Larkin packet? Like, what is going on? Yeah, so that's why I'm confused. Vegas or excuse me, New York. I'm like, wow, you got a stud. And what was it, 11 he signed.
Dan Powers
Yeah. Seven by 11.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. I love that number. I was with Kevin at the time, and he's like, 11's a lot. And I was like, dude, Dorothy, Ev is nasty. I know. Some people were like, he's not with that goal. Blah, blah, blah.
Dan Powers
Well, some people being me.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
That. That is the one thing I'll say. Like, I listen, it's an aggressive move by New York. I love that you went out and he's 25 years old. This guy pumps in goals. However, dude, there is no question that you were just playing with one of the best centers in the NHL and. And also Mitch Marner. And you're now on a New York team that is in a very weird flux state. And I'm actually curious to see what New York does. Like, I. Pavel Dorfiev is now your best player on the team like that is your best forward. Now that is your most expensive forward. Wow, that's crazy. And this is a situation where New York has about 15mil in cap, so like they don't have that much cap. And you've got to sign Gabe Perot next year. That's not gonna be a crazy. It's not like Gabe lit the world on fire. But we love Gabe, think he's a great player. You've got to sign him. You've got a bunch of RFAs coming up next year. Like a bunch. Will Cooley is an rfa. So it's, it's another one of these things where like these teams who miss playoffs. I always wonder the question of like, are you one player away from being back and competing or are you in a. Hey, let's settle down and let's see where we're going here. And I'm never sure if the right move is to then go. Here's a massive contract to one player. Again, when you are 25 and you are as good as Pavel Dorfev, I'm like, yeah, fucking pay him, dude. It's not like giving a 30 year old that contract. So I'm like, I think this is only good for New York. Yes. You can bring up the Eichel thing, which I did. Yep. But it's not something that would scare me away from giving this contract. So I just think it's a great move by the Rangers across the board. Yes. Vegas, you have to imagine if you traded Dorothyev, you have to imagine something else is coming. So very curious what that is. Yeah, another Russian on the move. Was Val Nishushkin sent to Columbus? Just a cap dump here. Yep, pretty simple. Valonous gets traded by the Avs. They got a second round pick in 2026, third round pick in 2027, and a fifth round pick in 2028. He is 31, had 49 points last year in 72 games. Probably the worst year of like the last three years for him. I, I kind of think that this one had to happen.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, it's weird to me because I think he's so good and I think he can be such an impact guy. And that as at times has been proven right and at times maybe is a little over aggressive, a little exaggerated. I weirdly think Columbus will be good for him. It's just that you live in Ohio now, dude, just go here in Ohio, just play video games, you know, It's a great state.
CP
They call it the heart of it all.
Dustin Bedroya
Exactly. Dude, don't Know why? Heart of it all. Chill out.
CP
That's where I was born.
Dustin Bedroya
I know. Chill out and just score goals and try to make the playoffs. Yeah. If you lose Zarensky, then your life is over and never mind. But hopefully they keep him and it'll be fun.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Rensky is gone, dude. Like, after all these, like, there's just no way that that trade doesn't happen.
Dustin Bedroya
But this. This feels to me because. Let's just roll it into the next one too. Jack Drury signs five year 22. 22.5 million contract with the Preds. I love that he's going with Ross. That'll be fun. A couple AVS guys over there, former AVS guys. And the. This what we just described in Dallas is kind of happening in Colorado too. Where you go, we had this whole thing, we had all these guys and you can still win. But damn, you maybe should have won while you had all these guys.
Dan Powers
Yeah. But that's why I like that they're moving on.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
Like that. I love the move because it's like you, Val, is a guy that's had issues.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And your issues aren't that big of a deal when you're winning Cups, but you not only have you not won a cup in, what is it, five years now since you last won, but you have, like really fallen short.
CP
We.
Dan Powers
We don't even need to get in the whole fucking A tier conversation again with ABS fans. But like, every ABS fan knows that getting swept by Vegas was not it. Yeah. Like that. You have zero ground to stand on now.
Dustin Bedroya
Not ideal.
Dan Powers
Zero.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. You.
Dan Powers
Like, if I see a single AVS fan talking shit this coming season, I'm just going to smirk at them and be like, really?
CP
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
Come on.
Dan Powers
Like, we love you guys, but really? Yeah. After all that shit, after the President's Trophy, you get swept by Vegas. No, no, no, no, no, no. We're not. We're not doing this. Yeah. So I like the move.
CP
I.
Dan Powers
Let's see what they do. But it's like you. It's time to shake things up. So this was a good shake up.
Dustin Bedroya
Okay.
Dan Powers
Staying close to home. Great little extension for the Kings. Our boy, Brent Clark, five year, 7.4 mil. Fucking fantastic. Fantastic work. I think Ken Holland was or not due for, but needed a good move. This is a great fucking move. I mean, it's just a phenomenal number. It's going to age like fucking wine. So happy for Clarkey and this was needed. As far as LA's decor, dude.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. Had to happen. Also great term for him. For him. Because then, then that can turn around at the end of that into a fat daddy.
Dan Powers
Oh, dude. Brant Clark signs another deal when he's 28. Yeah, like this. That, that. This is the dream.
Dustin Bedroya
Absolutely perfectly handled.
Dan Powers
Yeah, Perfect handled. This is a dream for him. He'll fucking sign another one for 14 mil pro. And he's laughing. Yeah. Better give me some of that.
Dustin Bedroya
Me a beer, dude. Buy me a beer. One time. Once.
Dan Powers
Once, Son of a bitch.
Dustin Bedroya
One time.
Dan Powers
I absolutely love that move. McTavish gets moved and I'm Ducks™ Tavish to the Blues for the first round pick on Friday, it was the number 15 and number 29. Not what I expected.
Dustin Bedroya
Same, same.
Dan Powers
I was like, do I have a big stance here? It's just not what I expected, especially of all the possibilities. And frankly, I think the big one that was weird for me was the Ducks. Like when you got a guy like McTavish that you just. That what a weird journey that was all off season last year. And then you finally get that deal done. If you're like, we're trading him now, I'm like, and this is for something.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And it wasn't like they also traded Olin Zellweger, RFA to Buffalo. And it was like, I imagine McTavish and Zellweger would be in a package for something, for a Dylan Larkin, for an Auston Matthews, a Connor McDavid. But instead they're just like, here you go. Here you go. And I was like, oh, interesting. And the Ducks, now they moved John Carlson's rights to Carolina. So, like, John Carlson's not coming back. We keep talking about the Ducks, how they had all these rfa right Shot Demon. Now they have fucking none of them. Like, they're all gone. And I'm like, the Ducks have now moved McTavish. They now have on their decor. Let me look at it real quick. They've got the Horse Jackson, the Combs signed up. And then all they have is fucking helison on his 1.1. And they've got Tristan Luno, great right shot defenseman, only 22 years old. He's on his rookie deal, entry level deal still. But then Gudis is RFA, Truba's RFA. Tyson Hines is still Michikov is still RFA. Like they have three defensemen signed. So like you imagine both of the RFAs get signed, but. And then it's like, are you bringing back both? Like, Gudis was your captain.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Is he getting like, it's the Ducks all of a sudden?
Dustin Bedroya
Are in a weird.
Dan Powers
Like, I'm like, I don't know what
Dustin Bedroya
you guys are doing, dude. I. The Ducks have had a bad summer for me legitimately, like they had. And the Ducks aren't dead, but they. The Ducks have had a bad summer because they were this. Are this super fun young team. But I'm so with you in that. I go, wow. You're going to be able to easily convince Carlson to stay because he had an unbelievable time in Newport. And then you are going to either dude go. Every time a guy holds out that next year sucks and then he becomes awesome and everything we believed he was. So either we're just going to hold on to McTavish and not trade him at his lowest point and then just know he's going to be nasty anyway. Or you put him in a package for fucking Auston Matthews.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
And then like you said, they just. Now, now all these pieces are just being sold at their lowest possible level for nothing. And I'm like, dude, this was such, in my opinion, an easy inflection point to make your pretty good team extremely good. And you just. And you didn't do it. And I'm sad.
Dan Powers
Well, it's. It. I think that they're, I mean pvb I will never doubt, especially after the last couple of years. But at the same time, you're right. It's like, it's. The fact that Cutter and Leo's deals aren't done yet is not obviously not an issue, but when you're looking at the cap, it's something you'd like to figure out. I said multiple times I would sign these guys.
Dustin Bedroya
I would, I would.
Dan Powers
Kane and Taves, these guys. Yep. I would give them the exact same deal. Who knows if they're going to be down for that. But let's say, as we keep saying, they've got 44 mil, 44.6. Let's say 20 of that goes with
Dustin Bedroya
the both of them.
Dan Powers
Like two seven year deals. At 10 mil a year, it's probably pretty accurate. But then again, dude, the league is so crazy. It is so crazy when you see we're hearing whispers that Bowen Byram's gonna sign twelve and a half million dollars. And I'm like, wow.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
So like, if Bowen Byram goes to Chicago, another team with a ton of cap space and gets a defenseman, Bowen Byram is now like, what? Didn't we. That's. That would be the highest paid defenseman in the NHL. Like, if that happens, it just throws everything out of whack.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Because like, then when Quinn Hughes is up for a deal and, like, Hughes
Dustin Bedroya
goes, give me 30 million, dude. No offense.
Dan Powers
And it's like, if you're. If you're these guys, like, if you're fucking Leo Carlson and that happens, you're like, I'm probably not signing for 10 now, dude. Yeah. So it's like, that's why I'm always like, get these deals done, dude. I know every team that's like, I want to wait and see what that guy makes. I'm like, don't do that.
Dustin Bedroya
Get. Every time. We're going to work literally once in the history of the world, in the history of the league, Connor McDavid. Well said. Every year of his life. But every Connor McDavid, one time was like, this. Just give me 12.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
And that was only for two years, because he's going to fuck you later.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
And so it's like, every time you wait, all that happens is someone fucks you because they overpay. And then now you have to do.
Dan Powers
I do. I don't like waiting at all. I do not like it. I think it is crazy. So the Ducks. Yeah. I want to see what goes on here with the Ducks. We're going to talk about the draft here in a second. Then we'll take a break and we'll get into some of the free agents. But I do just quickly want to touch on, to me, the big names that we've circled around are Zach Rensky, Dylan Larkin, and Jason Robertson. Though all those guys are, I would say, the three biggest names that are. Two of which I believe are 100% on the move. But, like, dude, we still have the Connor Hellebuck talks. We now got fucking Thomas Harley in the mixer. There is a chance that in these next couple of days, there's still more insane.
Dustin Bedroya
This week's gonna be sick. This week's gonna be very sick.
Dan Powers
This week could be very, very exciting. So we'll be keeping our eyes on those for sure. Quickly, let's touch on the draft. We all saw what happened. It's, you know, like, we're not gonna go pick by pick. The highlights for me, I absolutely loved Beeps. That was awesome. I did not like people shitting on it.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
People were like, dude, it was so cringe. Like, it was bad.
Dustin Bedroya
And I'm like, dude, Biebs was at the NHL draft. That's dope.
Dan Powers
Also, McKenna, I was asked, like, a couple months ago. I think someone was like, if there was a celebrity that could be at your draft day, who would it Be. And he's like, well, I mean, I love Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber picked him. Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
That is an all time, the coolest moment ever. First dude in the NHL history and then also by Bieber.
Dan Powers
Do you think that Biebs was gonna go up there and go like this?
CP
He'd be the last.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Yeah. Like, Bieber was never gonna go up there and go with the first pick of the 2026 draft. The Montreal, like, yeah, yeah. Or the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was never going to do that. He's going to do it his own way. And he went, Mr. McKenna, we would like to select you. Yeah. That was hilarious.
Dustin Bedroya
That was awesome, dude. He also, it looked to me like he leaned into Batman without the mic and he was like, McKenna. Like, I was trying to lip read him and I looked like. He went, McKenna. Right? And I'm like, I. I get the. You gotta. You gotta triple check that shit. Because this is. You know, this would suck if you did it wrong.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
Who? Remember Carrie Price that year? We were. We were in Nashville that year.
Dan Powers
Oh, dude. David Reinbacher.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. He was like, we would like to select. I was like, do you not know?
Dan Powers
So, Kerry, what happened?
Dustin Bedroya
You don't want that to happen. But it was really funny that I was like, it's been McKenna for 20 years or 18 years, you know, like, we've all known that the 2026 draft was. I have McKenna for 18 years. And Beeb was like, McKenna, right?
CP
That's where.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. And he's like, yes, dude. But yeah, I thought it was amazing. That was amazingly cool.
Dan Powers
I thought it was so cool. I'm so happy for Gavin McKenna. Like, this kid is just fucking beaten the shit out of clowns at Penn State. Being an absolute or a king. And he's just the man. Yeah. First. First round pick from the Yukon territory. First overall pick from the Yukon territory. Ever so sick. His family was so awesome. This fucking kid is just a beast. I'm. I'm very excited for him. And I am gonna say I'm very excited for Toronto. Yeah, we give Toronto shit for the craziness that has been this summer. And you know what is one thing that really pissed me off? Because I want mayhem. The video of Austin that they played of being like, so excited to have you here. I was like, oh, he's not getting traded. Yeah. And that pisses me off. But for you Leafs fans, I'm like, that's. This rocks. Like, you have Austin, Willie and McKenna for at least one more year. And that's pretty Fucking exciting. So that's awesome. But then that goes to. I don't think we have ever in our lives seen a team win a draft this emphatically than the San Jose Sharks, bro. The fucking San Jose Sharks, dude. They get Iver Stenberg. And I have something to say about that.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
They then somehow fucking Keaton Verhoff drops to fucking nine. And they get Verhoff and miss me with the like, well, why did he drop? Yeah, Verhoff is a fucking stud. Then you get fucking ryan Lynn at 21, which was insane. And then they take that fucking seven foot one guy.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, yeah. As well.
Dan Powers
Like, this was the most ridiculously dominant draft of all time by the Sharks.
Dustin Bedroya
And you were just saying all these contracts are coming up soon. But it is insane to me that the Sharks are the best team. The sharks should win 20 cups. This is the greatest team ever assembled. I don't understand what's going on, dude.
Dan Powers
I'll tell you what, man. If they do this, right, like, if they figure this out of the. Of how to pay these guys, because it can all get fucked up.
Dustin Bedroya
Yes, correct.
Dan Powers
Like, one of these guys asks for too much money and you're now. And then they don't perform, you're now dead. So that's going to be very interesting to watch. But I mean, if you look at, you've got Igor Macklin and Will, you've got Colin Graff, who we love. Misa, you now have Stenberg, you've got Dickinson on the back. You now have Verhoff, you've got Lynn. You are now like, if you guys do this right, you should literally win.
Dustin Bedroya
But you should be a dynasty.
Dan Powers
You should be a dynasty.
Dustin Bedroya
Dynasty.
Dan Powers
Like it is. It is unbelievable. The last three years, the way they've drafted who they've taken. Sure, it takes some luck with the lottery, but, like, you got some luck and you've picked well. Also. Kesselring just signed it.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep. Easy, easy.
Dan Powers
Little deal like, this team could be unbelievable.
Dustin Bedroya
Yes.
Dan Powers
And it is very exciting. I love the classic GM move that Greer pulled after they took Stenberg. And they're like, you take Ivers, Stenberg. You love the player. And he was like, well, he's our number one. If we had the number one pick,
Dustin Bedroya
we were taking Sternberg, we were going Stenberg.
Dan Powers
It is the most lock. You say that every time, no matter what. But at the same time, I think he's being honest. I actually. I know for a fact there were several teams in the NHL who were like, if we had the number one pick we would have taken Stenberg.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Now, I love Stenberg, but I'm taking McFerda all day.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, correct.
Dan Powers
But at the same time, this is a really exciting, stacked one, too. Like, both these players are fucking nasty.
Dustin Bedroya
Oh, this is going to be a sick Calder race.
Dan Powers
Oh, dude. And. But it's just like the. It's the. The inmates, dude. Like, the Sharks are the fucking inmates. Yeah. It's like the fact that you've just got Matt. Like, Mack is the best player in the fucking league.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And, like, Will is nasty. Misa is nasty. Dickinson's nasty. Igor's nasty. Now you've got Stenberg, who I imagine is going to play fucking 82 games in the national, and it's like you just have a bunch of fucking clowns running like it's a college team.
Dustin Bedroya
Yes. Which is why it's so fun and
Dan Powers
it's, like, so exciting and OG Actual real Sharks fans. Like, I'm so fucking happy for you.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. And if you. If. I don't know if there's a wait list, but if you can get your hands on Sharks season tickets now, do it immediately.
Dan Powers
Yes. Dude, it's unbelievable. They're fucking gross. And then we can't move on without giving Dr. Watkins some time. You took the twins.
Dustin Bedroya
You took both of them.
CP
It was the. You know what? It was the sweetest thing in the world for the. For Dubas to do that. And he's like, I can't break the twins up, dude.
Dan Powers
There's my brother along.
CP
We have the sadines.
Dustin Bedroya
There's precedent. I love this.
CP
Brother's got to play together.
Dan Powers
It is actually crazy because, dude, like,
CP
they play better together.
Dan Powers
We're seeing it everywhere, right? Like, you know, I don't know if you guys read Jordan Stahl's Players Tribune, but he's talking in that Players Tribune. When he signed with Carolina, he was like, it was a chance to play with Eric for a little bit, but then Eric got traded, and he was like, what the fuck? But, like, brothers playing with each other in the NHL is. No. Like, this is not a new thing.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And we just see Brady get traded to Florida. You know, we don't even need to talk about the Hugh stuff. But it is funny. These two, like, these two are fucking twins, bro. If you just look at them, you're like, yo.
CP
Yeah, they've got the call. Like, if one of them gets hit and the other one's on the bench, he's gonna feel it. Yes.
Dan Powers
They look like twins that are weird. And I mean that in a Good way. These guys are twins, and they've done a bunch of those videos where they're doing the. Like, they're standing on the opposite side of a wall and they're asked the same question, and they. People are like this. Pick up a hand and they both pick up the same hand. Yeah, yeah. And they're also. They like, ask questions about the personality. They have the same fucking answer for everything. Like, they are weirdo twins. And it is funny. Like, I bet. I don't think this was a question for Dubas. Like, I think the second Liam was available, they were like, we're taking Liam here, and then we're gonna take Marcus. What did he go? 33, I think. Or maybe I forget what it was. But me, they like, the second you take Liam, you're taking Marcus too.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
And I believe every team in the national felt that way too. When they're looking at their draft board, they're like, if Liam gets to blank pick, we need to see when our next pick is. Because we. I believe that their agent and like, them, they were like, we need to play together. Because, like, they played together in the WHL and ripped it up. They're now going to nodak together. And like, they are like, they are fully the Sadie.
CP
We need to get Sid on a line with the twins, dude.
Dustin Bedroya
I agree. Like, I am. I am actually heavily invested.
Dan Powers
I agree. And I also need them to wear, like, 67 and 77.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
CP
Super confusing.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Like, I need them to just be like his, like, little twins.
CP
Oh, my God. I. Yeah. I don't know, man. I'm. I'm hoping that twinning leads to winning.
Dustin Bedroya
Hey, I like.
CP
Ready for that in a few years.
Dan Powers
Very good. Very good.
CP
Thank you.
Dan Powers
All right, let's take a quick ad break, then we'll jump into some free agents.
Dustin Bedroya
The World cup is absolutely cooking right now. We're into the knockout rounds. If you aren't dialed in, you're missing out. And if you want to make this tournament one to remember, you use BetMGM's 2up early payout. This is actually extremely sick. This is one of my favorite promotions BETMGM has ever done. You just place a pre game match result bet on a World cup game. Okay. And then if your team. If the team you've taken to win that game, taken on the money line, if they go up by two goals at any point during the game, you get paid as if it won. So they can go up 2, nothing, 3, 1. The other team can come back, tie it up. We're in PKs, everybody's stressing. Not you, my friend. Because you have the BetMGM2 up early payout and they've already paid you like the bet one. Literally you keep the winnings no matter what happens. If your team goes up by two, cash that baby. This offer is available every single match, so get in on the action. If you haven't signed up for the BetMGM family yet, use that code netters. That's N E T T E R S. When you sign up, you get a fifteen hundred dollar new player offer on your first wager. How about that? How's your mother? BetMGM make it legendary.
Dan Powers
Thank God we get all the trades that we've got. Yep. Because NHL free agency is officially dookie.
Dustin Bedroya
That is kind of true.
Dan Powers
No, no.
Dustin Bedroya
This used to be such a fun day.
Dan Powers
No, no one, no one makes it to free agency. Yeah, yeah. Like I think that that's why all of these trades happen because we just don't. You don't get free agents anymore. Like Truly. For my money, there are only two meaningful free.
Dustin Bedroya
Because you're listening to this episode on Tuesday, which means tomorrow we are open. Like.
Dan Powers
Yeah, that's right. It is going to start. As you guys are listening to this, I'm sure by the time you're listening a ton of them. Because it will be fucking.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
The the Wolf of Wall Street Bell. Like the second the market opens, everyone.
Dustin Bedroya
And teams. Teams tamper in their dicks off. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dan Powers
But it's like Truly, dude. The forwards are like Jamie Ben, Michael Bunting, Lars Eller, Claude Giroux, Boone Jenner, Patrick Kane, Anders Lee, Anthony Mantha, Mason Marchman, Alex Bechkin, Corey Perry, Vlad Tarasenko, Matt Sucerel. Half these guys are in retirement homes and that's no disrespect to the players. They're amazing.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Like Zuk is amazing. I imagine he's going right back to Minnesota. That'd be, you know, but like Vlad Pears, Ovi. I mean pairs and Ovi are literally in their 40s. Yep. Everyone is old.
Dustin Bedroya
Mantha's the big ticket of the forward group, I would say.
Dan Powers
Yep. But like he's 31.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, but 31, 33 goals.
Dan Powers
Like. Yep. You know, he had a great year. Yep, had a great year.
CP
And again we got to the playoffs.
Dan Powers
These players are all going to be like very important depth guys for teams. But it is just wild that like there is no big ufa. And what's crazy is I believe personally that the biggest ufa available is 36 year old John Carlson. John Carlson is a bigger UFA than Rasmus Anderson. For me, rasmus Anderson is 29. But like, Carlson is. I think Carlson is still a weapon.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, that might be true. Actually.
Dan Powers
That might be true if Carolina manages to sign John Carl because I know Boston's in on John Carlson too. If Carolina manages to sign him because they just traded for his rights. So like, I'm kind of sitting here being like, dude.
Dustin Bedroya
So that was kind of getting news today or tomorrow. There was a 20 minute. And I highly doubt anyone was watching the NHL draft when it got to round six. But if you were, there was a 20 minute delay in the draft. It was one of the craziest things I've ever seen because, like, you're on a clock. 20 minute delay in the draft because Carolina traded for Carlson's rights in that moment. Like, they were like, give. We'll give us the. We'll give you this pick.
CP
Yep.
Dustin Bedroya
For the rights to Carlson, which means nothing. Like, we could easily still not sign him, but we just get to negotiate before the first. Yeah, like that's how that, that's why they did that. They were like, a sixth round pick is worth it to me. Fuck it. So that was crazy because I was hearing too, and I know Boston's in the mix, but I was hearing too that Tampa, it was like, done. He was going, he was signing with Tampa and then. But technically they can't talk to him yet. So then Carolina traded a sixth round pick to be like, like, let's see if we can pry him from Tampa over the next three days.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
So I think either he signs in Carolina today, if you're listening to this, on Tuesday, or tomorrow, he signs for Tampa.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
So it's like kind of a ballsy, Like a sick move would be like, all right, let me just see if we can convince him. We just want a cup.
Dan Powers
I agree. It's. I'm just super curious with all of these names floating around like Larkin, Warrensky, Hellebuck, Harley now too. It's like. And Robo. We always say the fact that the draft has now happened and players have been picked, they're no longer picks, they are prospects. I'm like, fuck. Like, are some of these huge trades we wanted gone now?
Dustin Bedroya
Yes, Dan, they are.
Dan Powers
Because now it's next year's draft pick that is way more valuable than whatever prospect you just.
Dustin Bedroya
Idiot. You just took at 26, whatever bust
Dan Powers
you just drafted, that next year pick is way more valuable. And you're like, our team's already willing to trade for that. So it's going to be interesting to see. But these guys are now like, yeah, like, I'm curious, like it's, you know, if you're John Carlson, I'm kind of like obviously signed with Carolina. Like, no offense, Tampa, but like, yeah, go. But I bring that up because like there's all this talk that they're maybe going to trade Nikishin and. But I'm like now, can you still trade Nikishen now that the draft is over? So it's going to be interesting. But really, man, it's like we rattled off all those names. I don't really have many predictions. I don't know if you do, but again, what's interesting is like all these guys, they're such depth pieces that I'm like, I don't know what you do for. Frankly, I hope Dallas moves on from Ben. No disrespect to Ben, but to me it's just like, I think it's time to like put the C on someone else's jersey and like move forward here.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
But it's like, yeah, man, I, I like, is there anyone that you're like, oh, this like, I, I like, I've heard maybe Clo Girou to Boston as well. Like, is, is, is he like a good, like you put him at that second line center, you maybe you mix something up, I don't know. But again, but yeah, it's all, it's like it's a 38 year old clo giroux. Like, it's to me, I'm like, send those guys to fucking Dallas and like, you know, like, try to win in your last year. Like, it's. When Giroud went to Ottawa, he was obviously amazing, but I, even then I was kind of like, is Ottawa the team you should be going to? And like now here we are, you know, they've not done much in the time he was there. And you, you're now he's 38.
Dustin Bedroya
Right.
Dan Powers
So it's like, you know, what do
Dustin Bedroya
you think OVI signs for?
Dan Powers
I don't know. Put it this way, I will guarantee the world this O is not signing anywhere else. Yeah, yeah, he is going back to the, the Washington capital for sure. There is literally no debate there. I am of the camp where I'm like, sign a one by one dude.
Dustin Bedroya
Same like, I actually can't believe he
Dan Powers
isn't doing it, but it's just, I guess not how the world works. I would hope that he does one by three. That's my prediction and I Think, dude,
Dustin Bedroya
he's going to take so much money.
Dan Powers
I think it's going to be like five or six, which is such a bummer because I'm like, God, dude, that much money.
Dustin Bedroya
I bet he takes. I bet there's a chance. He takes like one by nine.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
And they. And you go, nine.
Dan Powers
No way.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, dude. Mark my words. Somebody clip this. Yeah. Like, I bet he signs one by nine.
Dan Powers
That will be so depressing. If he signs pubic hair over six.
Dustin Bedroya
A dead. Strap in, pal. You're gonna get full bush, buddy. Full bush. Full bush over six.
CP
Yikes.
Dan Powers
If he does that, I will be like, oh, what are you doing?
Dustin Bedroya
You were to get full push over six.
Dan Powers
Because, like, this team's scrappy. Like, they could do. They could make noise here.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Like, what are you doing, dude? Like, don't do that.
Dustin Bedroya
I also saw. And I. I hope Freddie Anderson retires with his name on the fucking Lord Stanley's cup and moves on. But if he wants to keep playing, then all the power to him because he had. He had a good year.
Dan Powers
Yeah. The.
Dustin Bedroya
I saw somewhere that said the Oilers. And I was like, wow, that would actually be. And I doubt he wants to go to. But I was like, man, what a pickup that would be if the Oilers grabbed cup winning Freddie Andersen right now.
CP
I was like, jesus, Freddie, delete your phone history. You're going to the Oilers.
Dan Powers
Yeah. That's interesting. But yeah, the big goalies are Freddie Anderson, Bob, Stu Skinner, Talbs. Bob. I. I have to believe Bob is going back to Florida.
Dustin Bedroya
He is.
Dan Powers
There's. I don't think that there's any planet where Zito has done what he's done without a plan.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. What did Bob say he wanted? Like, wasn't he saying six?
Dan Powers
Looking for the problem is the term. Like, he wanted six. He wants like six by six.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. No, he takes three years.
Dan Powers
I don't. I don't think Florida has any issue giving him. Like, Florida has just under six available.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
But, like, if they, if he wanted one by six, Florida could figure that out.
Dustin Bedroya
They could figure out three by five. Here's $15 million.
CP
It's.
Dan Powers
I don't know, man. Like, it's. They've got. They have zero goalies. Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
Given three by five.
Dan Powers
Like, Tarasov's not signed either.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
So, like, they have that. They have a couple of RFAs that they need to sign and like, like, no sick. Greer Coonan.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
Noah Gregor. Like, they're all.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dan Powers
Like, Florida does not have a lot of space.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
So There is a part of me that's like, I think Bob's going back there. But, like, they only have 5.8 in cap space and they've got a decent amount to do.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
So, like, it is interesting. I think he's going back there, but I don't know. Stu is a big one for me.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Freddy is like, man, if Freddie went to Edmonton, that would be wild. They can definitely afford it. But that would be. That would be a huge win. Like a very unexpected win for them. They also have a lot of little depth pieces to sign and they don't have a ton. They have like 7.4, but that's one that they could definitely afford. Dude, where do you think Stu goes?
CP
Stu.
Dan Powers
Like, Stu. Because Stu wants to be a starter somewhere. Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
Is he. Does. Does anyone want him to be a starter somewhere? I know what he wants. I want to bang Angelina Jolie. You know, at least I have a fucking chance clipping it. Yeah. I don't know if anyone wants him to be a starter.
Dan Powers
I think Columbus does.
Dustin Bedroya
Okay. Yeah. Okay. Okay.
CP
It's only a three hour drive from Pittsburgh.
Dustin Bedroya
That's easy money, dude. And it's the heart of everything, dude.
Dan Powers
It's Ohio. I think Columbus artery again. I don't think Stu is demanding a huge number right now and I think that could be a good little scoop for Columbus. Like, I think Stu is an upgrade there and is an opportunity for him, but otherwise. Yeah. Like, I look around the league and I don't see many openings for him. If he wants to start, that's what I'm scoring.
Dustin Bedroya
Screaming, yeah, yeah.
Dan Powers
Or he signs in Winnipeg.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. And hell, he's gonna go.
Dan Powers
And then they trade.
CP
Hell.
Dan Powers
So we'll see.
Dustin Bedroya
Stu could do that. He could thrive up there.
CP
He could.
Dan Powers
He absolutely could. All right. Stocks in World Cup.
Dustin Bedroya
What a tournament.
Dan Powers
It's the best tournament in the world.
Dustin Bedroya
I do feel that is unfair that we, as in the US have to play the greatest nations, the greatest soccer nations in the world to make to win.
Dan Powers
Yeah. The other side of that was talking with Alice. Dude, Sweden's path is absolutely fucked.
Dustin Bedroya
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Dan Powers
It is just brutal. I am. I want to be careful with what I say right now because I don't want anyone to jump down my throat. But I don't like how easy Argentina's path is.
Dustin Bedroya
Me neither. This is what I'm saying. I guess, though. I guess though they're defending champs and that should, like. I know it's random, but that should be.
Dan Powers
Has nothing to do with it. But Fair. I love Messi. I love Messi. But I also love new, like, especially in the World Cup. Like, I love new winners. I love. We talked about it the other day. There's only, what is it? Like eight nations that have won a World Cup. Like, I'd love the opportunity of maybe someone new to win. And I just think it's a bummer that like, by the looks of it, Argentina is literally going to fucking waltz square dance to the final. Yep. And I'm like, man, but again, it would be so epic to just watch Messi at this age win back to back World Cups and be like, does anyone have anything else to. Dude.
Dustin Bedroya
Especially because, man, there was so much chatter about that they never won. And there was a picture of him two World Cups ago that was like, this is probably Messi's last World cup game. And then all he's done is play in two more, which is eight years. That's not just two more seasons. Two more World Cups. Won one of them and is now the favorite to win another one and win the Golden Boots. Oh my God.
Dan Powers
And it's also crazy. People forget in 2014, 14, like they lost to Germany in the final. Like, he's like, he's the, the. The boy has been there. He's been doing it since been doing it.
Dustin Bedroya
Y.
Dan Powers
So that would be mental.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, that has been sick.
Dan Powers
Do can USA win or did the Turkey game scare you?
Dustin Bedroya
That game didn't scare me at all. Actually. Everyone else tweaked about that game that didn't even scare me at all. But I now and I do think we can win. Ah, maybe we can. But it is. But this has been really fun. And this is the most fun I've had watching a us in a World cup team or in a World cup tournament in a long time. Cause usually I feel like we are the most underperforming bitches to ever live. And this year so far, and dude, maybe we're about to. And in fact, I will be. I will come back on this program and rage. If we lose to fucking Bosnia and don't score. You know, if we lose one nothing to Bosnia, I'm gonna be like, you, dude. No, dude, fuck that.
Dan Powers
No, no, no, no. I think that that is also, like, as we're recording right now, Japan is being Brazil one, which is amazing. But this is exactly what I said. I said they're going to go down one nothing and then win two one. The USA game is to me the biggest, like, perfect opponent.
Dustin Bedroya
Yes.
Dan Powers
Not a, not a completely random game. Not Like a group of physical scrappers that you got to be afraid of. And this is a. If you do not win this game, 3 nothing. You are ass clowns.
Dustin Bedroya
Correct. Dude.
Dan Powers
And I'm excited to see what they can prove.
Dustin Bedroya
So. Yeah.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
So that's been really fun. I think our path is extremely hard, and it would take. You know, you can only ask for so many miracles in a Cinderella round. Like, I'm not sure we can beat, like, France and. And Spain and Argentina.
Dan Powers
Well, Senegal. Belgium is. I mean, Senegal we just beat.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. But theoretically, we're gonna have to go Belgium.
Dan Powers
Well, hold on. You're. You're discounting Senegal?
Dustin Bedroya
Theoretically, I said, yeah.
Dan Powers
I love that Belgium game because it's the revenge game of Tim Howard's epic performance. So we absolutely clap. Belgium.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
Then probably we're looking at Portugal, Spain, and then the winner of that good news is they're going to kill each other.
Dustin Bedroya
Okay, so we'll beat whoever that is. Now we're in the semis.
Dan Powers
Yeah, now we're in the semis. And then we would have to play, I believe, France. Yeah, it's probably going to be France. France or Germany.
Dustin Bedroya
Probably. Yeah. And then Argentina.
Dan Powers
Yeah. Easy. World Cup.
Dustin Bedroya
I was like, what is that journey, dude? So maybe. But maybe World Cup, Right? Maybe. It might work for us, though.
Dan Powers
It could.
Dustin Bedroya
It could work for us.
Dan Powers
It's the best tournament in the entire world. If you're not watching, you're missing out.
Dustin Bedroya
I want to tell you this, Evan. We were trying to go. We were like, oh, it'd be fun to go to the USA Turkey game on Thursday. So we were trying to go get a couple friends going, and then we couldn't. Couldn't make it happen for various reasons.
CP
What are the tickets? Like, $20,000?
Dustin Bedroya
They were. They were like, two grand each, and it was like, a whole thing, and they dropped and they went back up, you know, so it was a problem. But then. So we missed that. But then we were like, you know what the first knockout game is here at Sofi, Right. And it's Canada, South Africa. And the tickets are way less. They're like, you know, like, 600, 700 bucks. So we were like, oh, let's go to that game instead. So we said, great. So Danny and Loop and Locks and myself, we're gonna go. So on Saturday night, we're. I was over at Loop's new place, and then I'm like, okay, what time do you guys want to leave? The game's at noon. Because I was asking some guys who had gone to games about how they got in. And Loop goes, why don't we carpool? Why don't we all. My house is. Of the four of us, my house is closest to Sofi. Why don't we all meet here? There's free parking here. And then we will go to. We'll go to the game. Because Brett was like, you can do it. It's not that bad. So I said, awesome. So we go, great. And we wake up Sunday morning and, you know, get ourselves for Saturday morning. No, no. Because the game was Sunday.
CP
Oh, the game was Sunday.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. So I grew up kind of late Saturday night, wake up Sunday morning, get guys, get a coffee, get a snack. Danny puts on his USA jersey, which Dan Powers would have hated because it's a Canada South Africa game, no team involved, USA jersey there, but it's okay. Soccer jersey. Soccer jersey. So, you know, and we all get dressed up and get to loops. And, you know, every time everyone's like, we want to leave at 10, but then a couple people are a little late. I'm like, sorry, we're coming. You know? And it's like, all right. And now I'm kind of stressing about the Uber. Whatever. It was going to be fine because I wanted to get there early just to see the vibe, you know?
Dan Powers
So we.
Dustin Bedroya
And Willie D. Is also going to the game, and Willie D. Texts us, and he's like, hey, I'm grabbing a hockey jersey from you guys. A Gretzky jersey, because it's a Canada thing. That makes sense.
Dan Powers
Yeah, I liked it.
Dustin Bedroya
It was cool. Yeah. So I just want to, you know, I'm in here rooting for Canada. And I said, sick. And he goes. I go, dude, what section are you sitting in? And he said, you know, I forget what. He was 1112 or something. I'm like, amazing. And he goes, what section are you? And I go, I don't know. So then I go, lox. Or I go, loop. What? Cause I was at Luke's house already. I go, what section are we in? He goes, I'm not sure Locks has the tickets. I go, okay.
CP
So we find out you got grifted.
Dustin Bedroya
I go, willy, I'll tell you. So then we get lox gets there, and I go, all right, let's call Ubers. What section are we sitting in? And Lox goes, oh, I don't know. I haven't bought them yet.
CP
Oh, my God.
Dustin Bedroya
And I go, are you fucking kidding me? I go, oh, get them right now. So he pops on the phone and it goes like, this sold out. No tickets. And we're all sitting there, dude, Danny's in a USA Jersey, dude. And I'm like, what do you mean? And he's like, I mean, I assumed we could just get him now. And I was like, dude, we have all. I canceled plans with Dolan on Sunday. We have all managed our whole day to go to this game, and now we are just finding out, sitting here at Loops on Sunday morning, that we don't have tickets and we can't get them. And then we all went home. All right?
CP
I would have gone to a bar and watched the game and made him pay for every fucking drinking meal you could, dude.
Dustin Bedroya
And we. I did go to a bar for brunch to meet Dan, and I said, you're coming. And he goes, no, dude, I'm going home. And I was like, well, then venmo me. $20,000.
CP
What a heartbreaking.
Dustin Bedroya
It was the emotional toll. It wasn't even that.
CP
That's rough.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. It wasn't even that I had to go to that game. It was just the emotional.
Dan Powers
I, like, went to a brunch, and Sandra was like, I think Chris is coming.
CP
Coming.
Dan Powers
And I was like, what?
Dustin Bedroya
He's at the world.
CP
He's absolutely not alone.
Dan Powers
He's at the game. Y. And then they arrived at halftime, and
CP
you were like, can I get a moment alone, dude?
Dustin Bedroya
And I.
Dan Powers
The worst part.
Dustin Bedroya
The worst part by far was the amount of people I had texted that I was going to the game that I. And not even people, I'm saying that were there, too, that wanted to meet me. I'm saying the amount of people I was bragging to, like, I'm going to a World cup game that I had to. That. Who texted me after, like, how was it? Yeah. And I was like, did not, in fact, go to that game because I am a loser. That was very tough.
CP
I had a similar experience. I tried to rent a truck from the Home Depot this weekend. Can't do that without a reservation. Not on a Saturday.
Dustin Bedroya
Oh, yeah, sure. Yeah.
CP
Gotta plan that shit ahead. So. Damn, I feel your pain on a much smaller level.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, no, you did. That's. Dude, you trying to get. You actually motivate yourself to get something done around the fucking house, and then it falls apart. That might be worse, pal. That might actually be worse.
CP
I'm gonna get this truck. I'm gonna move some shit.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. I was just doing something fun, dude. You were actually gonna improve your life.
Dan Powers
True.
Dustin Bedroya
I got another thing for you guys. I'm gonna text you a Picture right now. So I. This maybe was before your time, Ev. I have rallied against things in my life. Conglomerates. What is it? Corporations. Corporations.
CP
Oh, yeah.
Dan Powers
Big toothpaste.
Dustin Bedroya
I first went for big toothpaste. I went after big toothpaste on this show.
CP
You don't like Colgate here?
Dustin Bedroya
Well, no thing. They put on their commercials, people lathering the entire brush of toothpaste when you really just need this much toothpaste, a pea sized amount. And they are trying to get you to run out of your toothpaste faster. Where you waste toothpaste. Big toothpaste has been attacking us for generations. And I will fight back. Then I went after big laundry for the same thing. They are like, you need this much filter.
Dan Powers
Whole cap.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. And I'm like, incorrect. You do not need that much fucking detergent. You're trying to get me to run out of detergent.
CP
Fuck you. Yes.
Dustin Bedroya
And today I turned my sights onto big socks.
CP
Oh, boy.
Dustin Bedroya
Dan, I know you're gonna agree with this. I just got some new socks. I love new socks. Everybody loves new socks. Tom Brady actually once said when he was in college, they interviewed him and he said, I hope to be rich enough someday that I get to wear a new pair of socks every day for the rest of my life. And I believe he is that rich now.
CP
I think so.
Dustin Bedroya
And I'm happy for him because I hope he does that. I doubt he actually does, but I
CP
hope deeply, if not, he's at least once a week.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
CP
Refreshing the socks because it's.
Dustin Bedroya
God, those new ones feel good.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
It just feels like a waste of.
CP
It's a total waste. Oh yeah. It's terrible for the environment.
Dustin Bedroya
Nobody donates though.
CP
Can you burn socks? Can you burn them in the fireplace?
Dan Powers
Probably.
CP
Is that bad for the environment?
Dan Powers
Probably also. But I mean. Yeah, like I. It's just the headache. It would be to donate like.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, yeah. He has a guy.
CP
Wouldn't you sign up for Brady's used socks as like a dollar Shave club type?
Dustin Bedroya
That's so true. That's actually alarmingly true.
CP
You could pay a lot of money. Just like he wore these socks like in August.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
So I'm texting you guys a picture. You can put this in the pod. You don't need to put it on the stock or anything. This is a picture of a thing on top of the. My Bose headphone case. So ignore the Bose headphone case. It was just so you could see it.
CP
You got it.
Dustin Bedroya
Okay. So that has been texted some.
CP
Oh, yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
This I know thing. Yeah, I don't know what it's called.
Dan Powers
For listeners.
Dustin Bedroya
It's gonna be on screen.
Dan Powers
I know, but for listeners.
Dustin Bedroya
Oh, yeah.
Dan Powers
This is the plastic tab that has, like, the anchor on one side and then the skinny anchor on the other. That's usually in socks. That keeps them together.
CP
Yeah. Like, when you get a package of, like, six, it holds them all.
Dustin Bedroya
Literally. That thing's only job is to ruin your sock if you try to snap it.
CP
That's right.
Dustin Bedroya
And it's on me to not just cut every single one, but it is also intentional from big sock that they go. We know that the human species is lazy. 90% of them are lazy. 90% of them will pull this. 100% of the pullers will rip their socks and then buy a new sock. Fuck you, big sock. Because there is so many other methods of packaging for. And it's a business. I'm not saying, like, spend more literally. Just don't even. Don't even need it. Take that thing out. But there are other ways at the same price point to connect two socks that would not rip the sock to fucking smithereens. For the lazy people out there.
CP
Even if you cut it out, you're still. It's still a weak point in the sock.
Dustin Bedroya
Correct.
CP
It will eventually become a whole.
Dustin Bedroya
Like, why? Why? Why are we doing that at all? Literally, at all. And I will take you down because you ruined a pair of socks of mine that I purchased due to my laziness, but also due to your corruption. And I will not rest until the. No. No two pairs of socks have ever been attached.
CP
Call Aaron Brockovich.
Dustin Bedroya
Let's go by the dual anchor ever again.
CP
That thing.
Dustin Bedroya
That thing.
CP
Hey, I got a question for you. Don't you hate it when you get the no show socks and they just. They just hug around your heel? Yeah, I absolutely hate.
Dustin Bedroya
Horrible, horrible, horrible.
CP
I need a good brand of those.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
You know what? I. I'm. I'm completely on your team here. It's like, it is. It is laziness. But at the same time, it's like, why even present how frustrating that is. I'm with you.
Dustin Bedroya
Like, what? And to Evan's point, like, why? And I know it's thin. Like, why are we putting a hole in the sock at all? Like, there's no need to knife something through my new socks. Dude, fuck off. Literally, just ball them up, dude. Literally ball them up like you do in your drawer, you know, like, put
CP
it in a bag and sell the fucking bag.
Dustin Bedroya
Why are they sold like this?
CP
Also? Like, that Those little, like, plastic tabs, when you, like, collectively, that's. That's the shit that ends up in our balls. That's the microblast.
Dustin Bedroya
Yes, dude. There's the micro plastics.
CP
Good point.
Dustin Bedroya
Less. Less plastics. Also, there's 1 trillion of those swirling around the Pacific Ocean now in a fucking turtle. Like, gee, yeah, yeah, they blinded 10 fish as I said that sentence. The dual anchor, whoever invented it, I hate that thing. I don't know if it has a name. If it does, whatever name, I'll look
CP
it up and see. Maybe. Let me see if I can.
Dustin Bedroya
Like, big socks. And, dude, I beat. I beat big toothpaste and I beat big laundry. I am. I am two. And.
Dan Powers
Oh, we have been spreading the word pretty well, which is great. I mean, dude, this is just correct. Like, it's. There's no need for that thing. Yep, there's no need for that thing. And Evan, I didn't even consider, like, you're right. Like, when they put that thing through your socks, even if you don't rip it now, there's. There is a weak spot, hole in your sock.
Dustin Bedroya
Like, literally, why.
CP
Yeah, so you can have to buy.
Dan Powers
I bought a pair of socks once that. The. The little casing around them was sticker.
Dustin Bedroya
Amazing.
Dan Powers
And, like, that held them intact.
Dustin Bedroya
That sounds awesome, Dan.
Dan Powers
Yeah.
Dustin Bedroya
Wonderful.
Dan Powers
Yeah. I'm out on this.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep. I will. I will. I will not rest.
CP
I will be avenged.
Dustin Bedroya
I will. I will be avenged. Those socks will be avenged. And I. I. One day.
CP
Okay. Okay. Officially, this is called a barb. The item appears to be a plastic fastener. A barb used with a tagging gun, which is also used for attacking price tags to close. Same thing.
Dan Powers
Yep. I mean, a barb is a bad word. Like, it makes me think of barbed
Dustin Bedroya
wire, which only does damage. Which only does damage.
CP
Like a mean waitress at a diner.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, I was gonna say barb. Yeah. Stranger things.
Dan Powers
If we needed any more evidence that this thing is damaging, we just got it.
Dustin Bedroya
Barb.
Dan Powers
So fuck this thing.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
CP
Fuck barb.
Dustin Bedroya
We're done with barbs, dude.
Dan Powers
Yeah. All right, let's wrap up this EP with a beer league hotline.
Dustin Bedroya
And I gotta say, in this beer league hotline, the submitter dropped their team name and actual people's names.
Dan Powers
Oh, wow.
Dustin Bedroya
And I took those out. So the person who submitted this will recognize right away that we were using yours. But I just didn't feel that. I was like, I don't know if I want to blast this again.
Dan Powers
I don't know what it is.
Dustin Bedroya
So and also, actually, you can just read it first. I'll let Dan. I'll let Dan react.
CP
All right, here we go. Our team has been around for seven years. We grew up playing together in high school. Our main guy decides it's time to hang him up. At just 27 years old, he has plans to start a family and get his body healthy. He was a huge vocal piece in the dressing room. Not to mention he sponsored the team for all seven years. Now he's leaving. Now that he's leaving, he's no longer sponsoring a couple of the fellas. Took that to heart and left a flaming bag of dog shit in a brown paper bag, Billy Madison style, on his front porch. He came outside and put it out with his sock.
Dustin Bedroya
No.
CP
Safe to say we got him good. Is he soft for retiring at 27? Should he still toss the boys some sponsorship funds for advertising his business? Are we in the wrong for the dog poop?
Dan Powers
Okay, wow, Children, this is one of the few times in my life where with beer league hotline. I do not believe this story.
Dustin Bedroya
Oh, okay.
Dan Powers
I am like. I am immediately like, no, I don't believe you. I don't believe that this happened. I do not believe that a man with his sock stepped on a flaming bag of dog shit.
Dustin Bedroya
I have a real quick question about that. Where we are in a society. If you ever answer the doorbell to your house and there is a flaming brown paper bag on the stoop, aren't you already sure they're shitting it? That's what I'm saying.
CP
Yeah.
Dan Powers
You know they're shitting it, first of all. And second of all, just like, it's a flaming paper bag. It's not going to burn your house down. Yeah, let it burn out. Or just go, whoa, Go inside and grab a glass of water and put it in. So, number one, I need people on this team to DM us and tell us if this is true, because I officially do not believe this story.
Dustin Bedroya
I. I got the guy's name.
Dan Powers
I believe maybe that you did it. I don't believe that he put it out with his sock.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
So we'll see. You guys are the biggest pieces of shit I've ever seen in my entire life.
Dustin Bedroya
This is where I thought you were going. Almost never. There have been a few beer league hotlines where I've gone, whoa, dude, you. Because normally the submitter is a fan and someone I want to interact positively with. There's been a few where I'm like, whoa, dude. I actually am not sure I'm on Your side on these? Yeah, this is the first one ever where I'm like, are you out of your fucking mind?
Dan Powers
You guys are scumbags.
Dustin Bedroya
This guy has been paying your entire league dues for seven years, since he was 20, and now he's not playing and you want him to pay still? It's like, literally, you guys have been playing free beer league for seven years, he's retiring to have a family, and you shit his house. You Billy Madison shitbagged his house and are asking me, should he pay for our team?
Dan Powers
Still like you guys are. You're actually the biggest bunch of assholes I've ever seen.
Dustin Bedroya
That is the craziest question. I almost didn't do this one when I was going through all the submissions, but I was like, this is gonna be the most unhinged question I've ever
Dan Powers
heard in my life. This person. You need to go to therapy immediately, pal. Go to BetterHelp. Like it is.
Dustin Bedroya
You are.
Dan Powers
You are a lunatic, dude.
Dustin Bedroya
I guess, I guess because this came at the very end of it and I was like, oh, I get. Because again, he put the team name in, which I left out. I think it sounded like a restaurant. And maybe like, it's this guy because he said at the very end, like for advertising his business. I was like, oh, maybe their team is like his business. So I kind of at least semi understand where they're coming from. Or they're like, well, he paid because we were advertising.
CP
I'm so. I'm sorry, but what, what 20, whatever year old owns a restaurant?
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, good point.
CP
Like, that's like, that's a kind of thing.
Dan Powers
It was a restaurant.
Dustin Bedroya
It sounded like one of.
Dan Powers
Let's say it's a restaurant. I have to imagine it's a family restaurant.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. And. And also, dude, like, what do you think advertising you're doing for his bit? Do you think, like at beer league on Wednesday night, someone's like, whoa, we should eat there. You bring them. No business, dude.
Dan Powers
I feel bad for saying this because we, we have once again, before we. We got a shout out, Sharks Cove.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah.
Dan Powers
Sponsored us for like a year. And it was like they gave us a thousand bucks and it like helped the jerseys and like, that's really awesome and really valuable, but it's. It is. I'm sorry. For beer leagues across the world, it is the biggest waste of advertising dollars.
CP
No stakes. Yeah.
Dan Powers
No one is playing in that beer league and being like this. Never heard of. I'm going to go use that business. It's, it's. It's not a thing. But it's cool when a team is sponsored.
Dustin Bedroya
Yep.
Dan Powers
I am, I am speechless with how awful you guys are. This is, I mean like if you were upset and you were just like, oh yeah, it sucks. Like this guy's 27 and he's hanging him up, hanging up the beer league skates and now we don't have a sponsor, so now we all have to pay our full way. I would hear you. That, that is a bummer. But I would still, even, even if you were just bitching about this guy, I'd be like, I mean, come on man, like, pay your fucking beer league dues. But you're now shit, bagging his house and you're being like, is this guy soft? And I'm like, no, you are clinically insane, dude.
Dustin Bedroya
Dude, is he soft for like. And some of the messages are so long, you know? So like I'm always just trimming for time. But it was like he plays a really hard nosed game. So like he's literally just trying to get healthy and have kids.
CP
Well, yeah, it made me, it made me laugh that this, the comment I'm looking at is he has plans to start a family and get his, his body healthy. So like what were you guys doing with this dude where he's like, I gotta stop playing a sport to get healthy.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. Yeah, right.
CP
And like, and you're like, I want to start a family so I'm gonna be too busy and your answer is to like put shit on his front porch.
Dustin Bedroya
Dude, it took, it took such a sweet turn. As I was reading it, I was like, oh, this is interesting. Like I thought this was literally gonna be like, what should we get him as a, as a parting gift for paying for our beer leaf flaming bag of shit. And then they were like this. We fucking shit his house and then we're gonna to rob him.
Dan Powers
I was like, also, you know what this is now. I said I need the other guys here to DM us and let us know if this is true. I actually, if this is true, I need this 27 year old small business owner, legend, future family man to DM me so I can call the cops on these guys because you played beer league with a bunch of fucking lunatics.
Dustin Bedroya
Dude. Is it craziest fucking thing I have ever heard in my life?
Dan Powers
Absolutely insane.
CP
I think I have a new team name for them. The Shit bags.
Dan Powers
Yeah, you are now the shit.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah, that's right.
Dan Powers
You guys need to buy New Jersey.
Dustin Bedroya
We have your team. Yeah.
CP
You know it will sponsor you, but you got to wear the jerseys. You got to change your team name to the ship.
Dustin Bedroya
That's awesome.
Dan Powers
Either that or you name your team name. Madison Hotel and. Yeah, right.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. Nice. Dead. Really nice. Bonkers. So, final answer? No, he is not soft for retiring at 27.
Dan Powers
And he is.
Dustin Bedroya
Well, he's a little. But he's starting a family and getting. Getting his body healthy still.
Dan Powers
Buddy, I'll tell you what. After you start that family, you're gonna.
Dustin Bedroya
Yeah. You'll be right back in. Okay. Actually, fine. Final answer. Yes, he is soft for retiring at 27. Yes, you are completely and utterly in the wrong for dog pooping his house.
Dan Powers
Go straight to jail.
Dustin Bedroya
And no, he should not toss you sponsorship funds.
CP
No, not the way to ask for it, either.
Dan Powers

Loose, irreverent, and proudly "locker-room" — mixes sharp hockey analysis (“play to your city's advantages!”) with inside jokes, chirps, and sibling-like bickering. Unfiltered language is part of the show's draw ("full bush over six", “you guys are scumbags”, “this is some fucking bullshit, dude”).
This jam-packed episode of Empty Netters delivers a premium free agency preview, starting with the drama surrounding Jason Robertson’s contract future and why he rejected Seattle for reasons beyond money. If you want the real reasons top NHL stars are picking (or rejecting) teams, this episode offers clear-eyed insight on state taxes, roster construction, and what makes a city hockey-worthy.
Listeners also get in-depth trade breakdowns (Boston, Dallas, Vegas, New York, San Jose), bold predictions, live draft reactions (with defending of the NHL’s celebrity moves), and a comical (if disturbing) Beer League story. The hosts’ honest, experience-backed analysis of player value, roster-building, and the business of hockey is paired with their willingness to call out teams (and each other) for bad moves or bad behavior—always with a laugh and a story to match.
