Life. Somebody's trying to write a book. I got three kids in summer. It's fun times.

Yeah. What are your kids up to this summer? Anything exciting?

[Randy]

We did pretty much everything. We had the All Star Baseball circuit for the two games that we were involved in that got humbled pretty good on that deal with a team full of 7 year olds and an 8 year old all star tournament. We did a little trip to Red river or, excuse me, Angel Fire in New Mexico for my daughter's birthday. Did all the New Mexico mountain things in the summer, which was a very, very enjoyable trip.

[Paul]

But yeah, Mexico's beautiful.

[Randy]

Trying to. Trying to cram as much summer. Went to the Astros game last weekend. So sweet. Trying to do all the things before routine sets back in and we go back to school.

[Paul]

Did you go to Taos?

[Randy]

I drove there to get a battery for the clicker for the rental car that we took because it was dead.

[Paul]

Your. Your rental car has a clicker? What does that mean?

[Randy]

Yeah, the little, the. The key fob thing.

[Paul]

Oh, like literally.

[Randy]

Okay, yeah, literally. The key fob. Yeah.

[Paul]

It's like, why do you have a remote control in your rental car?

[Randy]

No, I was just paranoid that we were gonna lock the car. I mean, I know it's got the little like manual key unlock thing on it, but it was. It was a little paranoid that something was gonna go horribly wrong. So I did that. The. The rest of the family went and did a. A rafting trip down the Rio Grande over there, but I had to stay home with a little guy because he was a little. The. I think the altitude got him. That was one thing I was not prepared for. Paul. I did not realize that angel fire was at 8, 500ft. Yeah, I thought it was gonna be like Colorado, where you're like at 5,000, you do the mountain thing, you come back down and whatnot. So it took everybody a couple days to sort of get. Get used to that.

[Paul]

Yeah, you can feel it. So wait, the clicker didn't even go out and you just went and got a battery for. As a precaution.

[Randy]

No, you literally, like, you. You could not start the vehicle with it unless you push the actual clicker into the button, because apparently there's a fail safe thing on there to where if the battery does go dead, you can start it that way, but you couldn't unlock or lock the car. So outside of having to like literally take it apart, pull the key out, use the key to actually unlock the door. Because I didn't want a bear to be in my car in the morning from not having a door locked, which after we left, I saw multiple pictures of bears in people's cars because they did that. So I'm glad I. Glad I did that. But I did. I called over to the. I figured I was just going to pick one up on the way up there at a travel center. Right. Because surely they have batteries for these things. No, nobody had one, so. Oh, I called over to the. The TA Walmart and was like, ma', am, do you have a 2047? Or. I can't remember which one it was. Circular battery for key fob. She's like, yes, here on the computer, it shows we have 17. I'm like, no, I'm aware that on the computer it shows that you have 17. I'm looking at the same website that you are. I want you to physically go look and tell me that you have 17 of them before I drive. Because it says it's 16 miles, but it says it's an hour. Yeah. Before I drive over there, I'm going to need some verification that y' all actually have one of these.

[Paul]

That. That's a good.

[Randy]

And they did.

[Paul]

But gorgeous drive. Beautiful place.

Yep. Absolutely. Yeah. Bear country. You definitely have to change your. Alter your habits. I remember when I take my son up to Tahoe, I'd be like, hey, you can't leave stuff in the car. You can't leave snacks. You know, bears will get in the car and all that. My son is like, yeah, absolutely. I. I hear you, dad. Yeah, we don't want that. Every single time I would go out in the car, there would be, like, some type of candy, some sort of thing, like, stuffed into the seats, you know, like, I'm like, dude, dude, what is this? What? Did we not just talk about this? He's like, yeah, but this is. Well, these are Doritos.

[Randy]

Yeah, right?

[Paul]

I was like, okay, so bears only eat bear claws. Is that right? Is that how that works?

[Randy]

Or, you know, it's not steak.

[Paul]

Yeah, it's not, honey. Dad.

[Randy]

So, yeah, that was great. But, yeah, it is amusing. Not for those people, but the bears will swipe out your windows and just climb in.

[Randy]

Oh, that's hilarious. The little Angel Fire wildlife Facebook page that my wife joined is. Has been quite entertaining over the last couple of weeks. Just popping on that randomly at night and, I mean, you got herds of elk rolling through and everything. It's. It's really cool stuff. But then, you know, randomly, you'll have a. You know, a bear eating out of a hummingbird feeder on somebody's front porch or something.

[Paul]

Man, elk are so freaking intimidating and huge and awesome. Like in. If you don't. If you're not close to them, you don't realize how Massive. They are. It's. They're unbelievable animals.

[Randy]

So I played. I played two rounds of golf there. In both rounds on hole two, there was a couple walking down the fairway in the morning, and it's actually in their. In their little rule book that elk hoof prints are ground and repair. So it's a. It's a free pickup. So I was like, oh, nice. Makes sense because, I mean, obviously they, you know, one of those big, big things walks across the green then. Yeah, you're can't really putt across that. So. But yeah, beautiful animals. But the. The, like, individually, they're cool to look at. But the herds moving, like across the valley and everything was. It's. It's pretty cool.

[Paul]

Yeah, I've seen a bunch, especially in Rocky Mountain national park. And when you see them up close, like, literally just walking by you, you're just like, okay, you look like something out of the Pleistocene. Like, I'm waiting for a saber tooth tiger to come out of the underbrush and attack you. So, yeah, they're amazing creatures, especially in mating season when they're doing their calls and stuff.

[Randy]

Run. Yeah, you could hear them and I don't know exactly where. Where we were, but you could hear them calling a couple times at night. It's wild when we're out, you know, grilling or whatever. It was. It was cool. It's really cool.

No, no, the elks. What? I guess these. They're the. There's the Fraternal Order of the Elks. Does Yokum have that?

They come to the parade every year. They just drive little cars in circles.

Talk to me about what you're thinking right now. It's talking season. We got SEC media days. We've had a bunch of interesting off season stuff from Sark. Texas Tech has had their saga with Mr. Sorsby. How are you feeling about Texas football right now?

[Randy]

I'll hit on the Sourcebe thing first. Everybody that I see wearing anything red and black with the Tech logo on it, I've walked up to and just like, hey, man, what are your thoughts on this now? Not really, but I want to like literally every single one of them just want to be like, hey, what are your. What are your actual thoughts on this? Because I just. I think that thing was so mismanaged it's not even funny. But.

[Paul]

Well, yeah, it's interesting to get the IRL Raider fan because the administration is idiotic, apparently, and doesn't care about like destroying the fabric of all sports and their Twitter community is.

[Randy]

Well, that's. I mean, that's pretty much all of the Twitter communities. I can't really hold that against them, but the administration thing is very much. Yeah, it was like a. Their little. I don't know, their. What would you call that? Press release of the Round Table.

[Paul]

They had the fake from scripts.

[Randy]

Yeah. It looked like my kids like made a movie and there's like noticeable missing pieces of. Of like, as it like jumps from. Yeah, people aren't even. Like. I don't like, the only thing that would have been worse if like people weren't sitting in the same. Same chairs when it came.

No. Yeah. It's like the camera is now three feet higher than what it was before. I don't know. It was just bad.

I. I would love to say that any other person would handle that better than the way did they did. I hope we never have to find out. But that was about. I mean, I know there's no playbook on it, but boy, that was bad. That was bad.

I. I can tell you definitively this would not have been a thing at Texas.

Well, I mean, you'd like to think that we'd have done the homework on the front end, but like.

Yeah, well, no, even if we got caught, we would have been like hey, you can't bet on sports. Sayonora.

Yeah, and I. And that's the correct answer, but it just made it worse. In quote, unquote, supporting him. They made it worse for him, and now they've basically just, like, kicked him to the curb. And you hadn't heard anything about it.

This guy has a serious problem. It's like an alcoholic, and they're, like, handing him shots.

What did Joey Maguire say? He didn't kill anybody. Was that, like, his, like, official stance on. It was like, dude, like, come on, man. Like, read, like, have some feel, like, just a little bit of awareness.

I think they're just so used to being in Lubbock and getting back to the Angel Fire thing. Having driven through there, I can understand how you would have an insular.

I don't know, man. It just. They just kept digging. They just kept on digging. But. And I hate to. I hate to go here, because, I mean, there should be a principle to it all, whatever. They couldn't do that with Baron Morton. And I think they saw their guy with Sourcebee, like, hey, this dude weighs 230 and he runs a 4 6. Our dreams have been answered. You know, these are the guys that, like, they ran Tyler Shook in a bowl game, like, 28 times. Like, you know, so. Yeah, I mean, that's OK there, huh?

BYU is going to have unprecedented just fan pull. You know, fans across all spectrums pulling for them. And like, you know, they created a

whole new market of Big 12 fan. And all of them hate tech. Like, that's the, that's the. The single unifying feature is that. Yeah. Yeah.

Well, yeah. The best part about them coming to the Big 12 day, Joey McGuire's other thing was like, how dare you question our integrity? They did that thing too. Like, how dare you. It's just like, what?

Yeah, we're not doing. It's still with the playbook of the politics playbook. We're not doing that. Well, I mean, yeah, we're doing it. We're doing it, but it's, it's, it's a good thing. No, this is good.

Your wife catches you with the stripper and you're like, how dare you accuse me with being. Of being with the stripper. How dare you? After all we've been through. Yeah, it's like she's right there. How dare you?

Yeah, I think he's been a little pissed off. Agreed. Last year, when, you know, he had some distractions. He felt like some staff didn't take care of business without his guidance and direction. He was pissed off at some of the developmental gaps in the program. I think he was pissed at himself. You know, I don't think it was all no 100. I agree.

And I think since then, the minute Arch dropped the hammer on Michigan and we went to the off season, I think he's been just all about like, I'm going to nail this portal class, we're going to clean up all the dead wood and we're going to like get to work and I'm going to get something accomplished with arches last year or what we think is arches last year, Randy? Depends what NFL franchise takes a fancy to him. Right.

That would shock me, but I don't know.

It would shock me as well. But the, the Mannings have, have tried to select their, their pro team before. I don't blame them.

I mean he's playing professional football, making a lot of money right now. He's just not getting the notoriety for it. So it's kind of the same thing. That's true. If you have to wait a year to set yourself up for a better situation, then so be it. But it was, it would still very much surprise me, but.

Well, he's also one of the few college athletes with real nil. Actual nil.

We had to fill out so many paper. It was so stupid. Like I had a job in the Cape my freshman year. I worked on it, work for the guy that built decks up there in the mornings three days a week. And we had to fill out like a financial report of, you know, all the money he paid his cash. So we had to pay, you know, we had to fill that out. And like it was like, I don't know, 250, whatever a week or whatever.

right now, I don't know. That's pretty close to the threshold of whatever. Just like, this is so stupid.

I want to talk to him. All right, Texas, I have an interesting side tangent I want to go down about Texas State if you're interested. But you let me know when you want to do that or if you want to stay on Texas and talk about some other stuff about the program.

I'm very interested in why you would like to talk about Texas State, so let's go ahead and do it.

[Paul]

All right. So I'm doing my research for my book. I've written up the Texas State and UTSA team profiles. Did all my research. So UTSA, Jeff Traylor, he built a really nice program there. 2021, 2022, they're winning their American conference. They're going like 11 and two, you know, potentially becoming eventually going to be a playoff qualifier. Right. If they keep on that trajectory, then nil. And the Portal really hit and really sink in. And UTSA has been 7 and 6 back to back seasons. So I'm doing my research on utsa and they have eight returning starters total. If they had not been hit by the Portal in the off season, they would have 16 returning starters. They lost every one of their quality defensive linemen and defensive backs, and they didn't lose them to like, you know, Tulane. They lost them to Oklahoma, A and M, Virginia, Cincinnati, like Big 12 ACC and SEC schools. Just went in there and said, you're a farm league now. You're our double A program and we like these prospects and they're now ours and we're not going to pay you for them. Right. How long is Jeff Traylor gonna be a grocery store for P4 programs that can't be fulfilling.

[Randy]

Did he miss his window?

[Paul]

Yeah, yeah, he did.

[Randy]

But I think he's gonna be there as long as he has to be.

[Paul]

Well, but I don't think people are looking at like, his records and being like, oh, he's gone down as a coach. I think.

[Randy]

No, I agree with that. Yeah. I just. I just think it's going to be very. I don't. I don't know that he'll be able to generate the buzz anymore to make a jump to a Arkansas. That's a great point whatever type thing. I think his leap now is going to have probably one, maybe two steps to get to where he could have gone a few years ago, because I just don't know that he can. I'm not saying he can't coach it or do it. I just don't know that he can generate enough fan interest and momentum anymore to make that jump.

[Paul]

To your point. James Madison, upstart program. They land. Kurt Signetti obviously lands Indiana off that. Bob Chesney replaces them, takes him to the playoff. He gets ucla. James Madison was utsa, just. UTSA was a little early on it. Right. To your point. When you're 14 and one and you go to the College Football Playoff and even if you get blown out in the first round, right. Arkansas, Kentucky, you know, these schools are. Mississippi State is like, dude, that's our guy.

[Randy]

Right?

[Paul]

Especially in this big thing is recruiting. So that. That is 100 our guy. Let's go. I think to your point, now, there's no. There's not as much fire for that. You know, there's not. There's just not that feeling of like, oh, we got the next big thing.

[Randy]

Agreed. Yeah.

[Paul]

So. And I guess the thought is, if this is affecting the rest of the G6, other than maybe one or two one offs, maybe, maybe then what's the transitional team you go to? Like, does Trailer need to go to Wake Forest before he can go to an SEC team?

[Randy]

Like, I don't know why, but Virginia popped in my Head when I was trying. So. Yeah, wait, Forest, Virginia. I think you go to a school like that that is in an advantageous recruiting region.

[Paul]

Yeah.

[Randy]

To where you can, you know, the, the dmv, something along those lines where you can kind of, you know, show your skills again, so to speak. Taking those second tier guys and maybe, you know, put together one run at that neck quote, unquote, next level.

[Paul]

What about smu?

[Randy]

Yeah, I mean, I can see that being a logical. I think he still has enough shine there to where if he put together a year, that, that could be a, you know, a landing spot.

[Paul]

Well, so another example, Oklahoma State. Eric Morris built up North Texas into basically UTSA from four years ago. He gets the, he has that one amazing year. They're entertaining. Everyone's like, oh, get Eric Morris. Now he's Oklahoma State head coach. So, yeah, I think you're right in the trailer. Did miss his window. But I think if he decides he does, he's had enough. I think he will have the opportunity.

[Randy]

I just, I don't think, I don't think he won't have the opportunity. I just don't think it's going to be the, you know, he could jump. I mean, you know, before it was, you know, hell, he's in, you know, he's in the LSU discussion, etc. So forth. And I, I just don't think his. Even if you put together, you know, 11 in one year or whatever, I don't think that that's, that's in the cards. It's probably more smu, tcu. Hey, Oklahoma State would be in the cards, I guess, if, if something went wrong there. Yeah, I did listen to a podcast with the Morris guy the other day. He was, I liked him. He was pretty impressive with his outlook on everything. So it'll be interesting to see how that plays out.

[Paul]

So this takes me to the Texas State tie in. So Traylor coached GJ Kinney in high school and of course it's kind of been his mentor. And now Kenny, Kenny gets the job at Texas State, takes over the program. They'd been horrific since the three years before he took over. They were combined 10 and 26. And so Traylor takes over, takes him to a bowl the first year, beats Baylor in Waco. I think people have forgotten that. Like that first year, which was a huge deal.

[Randy]

You're talking Kenny.

[Paul]

Kenny. What did I say?

[Randy]

Yeah, you said trailer Kenny.

[Paul]

Oh, I'm sorry, gj.

[Randy]

[Paul]

No apologies. So he's now had three consecutive winning seasons at Texas State. They've gone to three bowls, they've won all three. Entertaining sells tickets. Texas State, on the strength of that revival, gets invited to the new PAC12, which of all the minor leagues is now my favorite by far, like coolest travel, destination league possible and fun, like mix of teams.

[Randy]

Yep.

[Paul]

So here's what's interesting. His first team for Texas State, which completely makes sense, had 53 portal transfers. Okay. He like, he just completely turned over the roster. It was just like, everyone get a piece of tape with your name on it. I need to learn your names during practice, you know, that, that thing. And they do well with that team. And then of course, there's a little bit of a setback as those, some of those guys leave, blah, blah, blah. The last two years, GJ Kenny has taken two high school recruiting classes of 22 people each. And his last one, you know, big stuff here, was ranked 73rd in the country, which is not bad. And all 22 guys were three stars. So there's no two stars. There's no, like, we don't know who this guy is, you know, parts unknown. And they ranked ahead of Tulane and Nebraska, by the way. Nebraska, LOL. They were like 77th or something. So let me ask you, is G.J. kenny, is he on to something, like, I'm going to build it up the right way now, or is he just basically going to raise up all these recruits, develop them, and then we're going to come in and just pluck them away like the P4 schools, Texas included, and say, hey, drive up the road 35 minutes and come to Texas? You know, it turns out you're a good defensive end, right? Or is he got something in the works there that like he can pay these guys and retain them? Like, what, what's the move here of someone trying to build out, like with real recruiting classes in high school, like the old fashioned way at a G6 program, is it going to work?

[Randy]

I think if it can work, it can work there. I think he's in a unique situation. It's, it's a cool spot, it's a cool town. You're, you know, you're uniquely situated there between San Antonio and Austin. You got the river, you got a cool campus, you got a growing campus, you got, you got money flowing into the area. You know, it's not your typical, you know, that level job, but yeah, I mean, you're in the state of Texas. There's plenty of players to go around. You know that. I mean, and for every, you know, guy that is a four or five Star or whatever. There's some three star that's, you know, just that much has a, you know, a little flaw to his game that that can be.

[Paul]

It's literally the dude didn't go to camps, right?

[Randy]

Yeah, something like that.

[Paul]

And he played in Yocum's offense.

[Randy]

Yeah, or some. Yeah, it's some two. A kid from East Texas. That's a quarter. It's Cam Ward. Right, well.

[Paul]

And their team runs the wing tee.

[Randy]

Yeah, we ran, we ran the wing tee. But I'm, you know, I'm killing it. And seven and seven or seven on seven in the summers. But I also play baseball, so I don't get to go to all these seven on seven camps or what. Anyway, you know, those kids are all over the place in the state. So I think there's enough of them for that to work. I think he's probably got enough money to make that to work. Make that work. And then yeah, if he loses some, then great. That's just more nor more notoriety for him to go sell to the next batch of three stars. Like, hey man, come here for a couple years. If it works out, great. If it doesn't, then you get to hang out in San Marcos and you're going to be part of a cool program that's going to win a lot of games. And you know, you're a four year, four year player here. If it does work out, then two years and you're on to bigger and better things. But I, I don't think that works, you know, I don't know at whatever the equivalent of Texas State is in Alabama. Uab, yeah, whatever. Yeah. I've never been to, I've never spent a lot of time in Birmingham, but I can't imagine that it really compares to the Texas State campus.

[Paul]

Probably not. Yeah, I almost wonder too if you can do contractual stuff now that you have five for five.

[Randy]

There you go. There's another thing.

[Paul]

What if you say to these guys, hey, we got a little nil. Like literally like we can pay you ten grand. I don't know, whatever.

[Randy]

Right.

Sign this contract, you're with us till you're the end of your third year.

[Randy]

Right.

And then we can renegotiate. And at that point, if you're good, you're already starting for us. Right?

[Randy]

Right.

And if you're really good, then, you know, you can, you can go play for, you know, freaking Texas A and M. I'm wondering if you can do stuff like that and like sort of create some security because their attitude should be, hey, we're going to develop you and we need to get something back. You know, we need your time. But we're not asking you to sign away five years. Like, we know that's unrealistic. I don't know, I just wonder if you can.

[Randy]

Yeah, interesting.

[Paul]

I wonder if someone's going to do that and kind of be the, the innovator.

[Randy]

I mean, if, if you can do that, which I don't know why you couldn't. People should be, you know what, that level, I mean, it's like, hey, you're here for two years, like nobody. Nobody yet, nothing else. You're here for two years, here's what we can give you. And then after that, hey, you ball out, go wherever you want. We'll, we'll pay you, somebody else will pay you, whatever. But at least that gives them some sort of roster. I don't know, certainty, I guess, to where you can build a team, you know, knowing. Okay, at least we got, you know, these guys for, you know, X amount of time. We can, we can, we can count on that. But like I said, I just think he's uniquely set up in a really good situation, university wise, location wise in the state of Texas to where he can make that work.

[Paul]

Yeah, it's interesting. I mean, I, I kind of was thinking about it as like if I was a marginal three star prospect. Yeah, that seems like the most fun place you could go play.

[Randy]

Where else are you gonna go? Like, you give me the options in Texas. Like, you can go to Houston.

Utsa.

Yeah.

Utah, Sam Houston.

[Randy]

Yeah, I'm taking San Marcus. Like, I know there's other things that play here, but. Yeah, no, I mean, if you give me opportunities, then, yeah, Huntsville summer job.

You could do a little prison work.

The other, the other thing about it too is, I mean, you know, I would assume that they have a decent amount of Nil, relatively Speaking to the size of the program, where, where is it better to use it on a bunch of three stars at a high school or are you gonna go try and like fight people for, you know, proven commodities? Like, no, that would be a gross mismanagement of funds if they did that. So it makes sense. But like I said, I just think he's uniquely positioned to leverage it.

Yeah, after we play them, I kind of want to get. I want to like interview the guy and be like, hey, is this what you're trying to do? I like, I want to figure out

what do you got going here?

[Paul]

Yeah, yeah. What's the angle here? Yeah, but yeah, it's pretty much what is crazy. I tell you what, their offense is awesome.

[Randy]

No, he's. Yeah, he's a good coach. I mean, like I said, it's a, it's a well ran football team.

[Paul]

I've been scouting them and dude, their offense is a blast. It's just cool and different than what you think because you're like, oh, yeah, they just throw it around and, you know, they're going five wide. No, actually, they run the ball really well. They do a lot of like quarterback run game and they have cool blocking schemes. Like, they block stuff up in like, interesting creative ways and they, they run a lot of RPOs that are super intricate. There's like a lot going on and like, there's, there's sort of check with me's on the RPO right, Where you can tell if the defense lines up in a certain way, it just becomes a, a vertical shot, you know, instead of the, the, you know, little RPO curl route or something. Yeah, and it's, it's, it's, it's a cool offense and it's, it's fun to watch. And it's, it's a weird combination of super creative, but also pretty simple. Like if you break it down in its little component parts, it would be a lot of fun to play in.

[Randy]

So it's the best kind.

I don't think he's got any reason to need attorneys at this point, but full line wise, I don't. I don't know that my concern is necessarily on talent level or whether or not we have pieces to make it work. It's whether or not they can form a unit that works.

No, we really didn't know. I'm. I'm with you. Yeah. But anyway, regardless, I think we have pieces up there to make it work, just whether or not they get them figured out in time and on time and the right combo or whatever. But that would be my. My biggest concern. I mean, that's no revelation. I think everybody's kind of on the same page there. But I think we proved towards the end of the season last year that just a serviceable unit can be a benefit to the team. So if we could get to know something resembling average or maybe even slightly above, then I think it goes to a whole nother level. I think. I don't know if people are, like, worried about it, but I'm really excited to see what this running back room does. I think you got some guys that are really going to maximize, whether it be, you know, screen game, short pass game, just flat out, hey, let's just get them the ball in space on actual routes. But I think. I think that's going to be a. A. A strength that is reliant upon the offensive line being functional. But I think if you get anything more than functional, then that really unlocks that. That room to be a. To be a weapon.

Is there any guy in particular that you're kind of eager to see?

[Randy]

I. I'm. I'm kind of all in on the Brown guy from Arizona State.

Yeah, Ra. I think is somebody. I don't know. Everybody's got weird pronunciations now. Like, we've gone the entire off season saying names one way, and then it's coming out that everybody's got different pronunciations. But, yeah, I think. I mean, I. I Smothers. I mean, I definitely excited to see Cooper, but, you know, I've been. I don't think we've had this discussion before. Like, I've seen the next big thing come through and in football and baseball and everything too many times before to where I get too. Too excited about somebody that I haven't seen do anything yet. I have seen Mr. Brown with his hands on the football, and he's pretty electric. I think him and Smothers or Smothers will complement each other. So Mosley's probably the. The guy that I'm most interested to see if he's healthy just because he flashed a couple times last year. And I think there's a little bit of buzz coming about him now that, you know, he's gonna be pretty reliable. So.

Did you hear the stuff about his GPS timings this summer?

[Randy]

Yeah. They're saying he's running like 21s, stuff like that.

[Paul]

Yeah. This is like one of the faster guys, right?

[Randy]

Yeah. I just think he sort of got swept under the radar last year because it was like, oh, hey, he had a good game. And then, you know, he wasn't really healthy then. He was kind of coming on. They got hurt again. And then, you know, now you got all the Coleman and Wingo talk or whatever, and then you got the young guys, but I don't know, I just. I really liked him last year. It just never really kind of came. Came full circle. So hopefully we see him in a little different role and. And he can be healthy this year, but I think he's just going to be very reliable.

It's funny because people automatically are like, yeah, man, that guy's your number three. And. And then it's like, you know, that's really good. You know, that's. That's a great third receiver, blah, blah, blah. And you're like, you know what? There's a world where Emmett Mosley's are number two or maybe even co. Equal to.

I was gonna say, what if. What if he's number one? Yeah. I mean, it just depends. I mean, if. I mean, if everybody doubles Coleman all the time, I mean, I mean, yeah, he's gonna have his opportunities, but he's probably not going to be the, you know, the leading target guy. I mean, Sark's gonna scheme people open. I mean, he's proven he can do that. But, yeah, he may be your volume guy.

There's the number one guy by targets, and there's number one guy by gravity, right?

If you're getting doubled all the time, you're the number one receiver. Right. Even if you get, you know, three receptions. Right.

Yeah. You get. You're gonna catch two balls for 65 yards.

That's right. So my thought is I. I think there's a world where Emmett Mosley could be the number two. And Wingo is kind of, you know, if he doesn't fully develop beyond last year, which, I don't know, maybe. Yeah. He could just be your gadget guy, like, great athlete, which is kind of what a lot of number threes are on good teams. Right, Right.

He just happens to be bigger.

Like, he just doesn't look like everybody else's, right?

Like, that's right. Yeah. But sometimes your number three guy is like, oh, he's the good route runner with good hands. But sometimes your number three guy is like, oh, he's just a phenomenal athlete, but not like a great receiver.

So we do gadget stuff with him, you know, and we could throw. We could throw deep to him, and we throw swing passes and screens.

I was like, well, yeah, also Narduzzi at Pitt, he kind of the. The linebackers are the superstars of the defense, and all the stats kind of go to them. Dude, I've been watching games. Like, I. This is part of the reason the book takes forever, because I get that I go down holes and to try to, like, you know, be correct.

Yeah, but you're worried about the. The one random guy that sits in his basement all year.

That's like, one random guy.

He is nuts. So here's a crazy stat. He has three career interceptions. Do you know what all three of them have in common?

I'm gonna say he scored on all three.

I remember watching one of his returns where I was like, this dude could play running back.

Well, and so he's that guy, Randy. So there's that guy. Like on any team you hope you have that guy. But we all recognize this guy. So he gets to pit. He's a three star recruit because he's. No one's sure if he's a running back or a linebacker or a safety. He's a tweener, you know, the story. Gets to pit Narduzzi, who in many ways is an idiot, but in other ways a complete genius in his ability to like develop defensive players. It's like this guy's a linebacker. Like this. There's no debate. So true. Freshman year, Biles, Pitt already has pretty good established linebackers, so he's not going to be able to play much as a freshman. They put him on special teams. He blocks three punts as a true. Okay, he's that guy.

Sophomore year, his first year. Starting pick six, touchdown. Second on the team and tackles. Second on the team in sacks, second in the team and tackles for loss. He has more pass breakups than any of the defensive backs on their team as a sophomore. And then junior year, two pick sixes. Like five sacks, 15 tackles, no 17 tackles for Law. Like, he's just the guy that fills up the box score every game. And he's always into something. Like in every game, you, you go through the box scores. Rasheed Biles did something crazy in every game. Like, something.

He's the guy where it's like, hey, our tight end just got, you know, a shin burger. He's out for a play. Other tight ends over there is like, hey, go, go play tight end this play. And he's going to catch like a, he's going to catch a 20. Yeah, he's going to catch a 25 yard dig over the middle.

Because he knows, he knows where the weak spot is because he's like, hey, I can never get to this spot, so I'm going to go run there. It's like it wasn't even part of the play. Like, just like. No, I know. I know where the soft spot in this coverage is because that's where I

I was like, of course he blocked block three punts. Yeah, okay, I get it. Like, he's that guy. And he's also the guy who blocks the punt and then runs and picks it up as it's bouncing perfectly and then takes it the rest of the way. Like, you know, he can't just block the punt. He's going to be the guy.

Perfectly on the bounce. So, yeah, that's Rasheem Biles. I think Texas fans, everyone's really excited about a lot of the guys we added for good reason. But Biles, you should be fired up about. And then Bo Masco, Rutgers, just about.

I was just about to say, I think everybody's going to be equally as excited about our, our new corner.

[Paul]

He's going to be really good, man. Rutgers was terrible on defense, which is not typical Rutgers. Understand they usually have a crap offense and a pretty scrappy V. They were opposite. They had a good O, believe it or not. The, the Greek rifle, 8th. And calic manus had a good final season for Rutgers. And then on defense, they were terrible, but Bo Misko was the bright spot and they were, you know, they were moving him around and he would, you know, follow the other team's best receiver. And, you know, sometimes they play zone, but Bo would play, man inside the zone. And he's sticky, man. He is a really good player. So I think he's going to be great for us. And then some guys on our roster that I've been impressed with kind of digging a little deeper. There's a reason Kobe Black got moved to safety. I think Cade Phillips is going to be really good.

Agreed. So we, yeah, things like that don't tend to just happen for no reason.

Well, I mean, because Kobe's a good corner.

you're looking at your roster. Because part of that is not just Cade Phillips, like, winning the battle. Right. It's like we've got five really good corners that we like. That's too many. Like, we can't play them all because Samari Matthews, everyone loves him. True freshman Wardell Mack was really good in his limited view. You know, like when we did see him play, he played great against Michigan, especially Roberson.

Yeah, he's the third corner. So you've got all these corners. Why would you have a 205 pound, 6 foot 2 guy, like fighting for snaps at right, number 4 corner, when he might be your starting safety next year? Right? Not, not necessarily this year, but we'll see.

No, but I mean of the two groups, I mean your safety room definitely has more corners questions. I, I not saying that he walks right in there and plays, but you know, those, those guys have a little more questions health wise or, or whatever than in the corner room. So if you had a.

Makes perfect sense if you had a choice. I would prefer to be loaded at corner and have questions at safety than vice versa.

So you're, you're the older D.C. you've seen it all. You've been a head coach. The last thing you want to freaking do is talk to 17 year olds. Right. Muschamp is a recruiting maniac. Since he set foot on campus.

Yeah, I think he's just a relationship guy. I just, I just think he values relationship. That's what I'm saying. I don't, I don't think he has that bone in his body to show up and, and mail it in. Like, I just don't think he could do it.

I'll tell you what, what's interesting is Chiswick was on some, one of the things the other day and they're asking about any, you know, he names the, the typical things that, you know, temple offense, you know, the, the potential where areas where he could struggle. Temple offense, quarterback, run game, you know, all defensive coordinators struggle with. But at the end he mentioned, he goes, I think one of the, one of the challenges when you have a defense, defense that talented is to not try to do too much. Yeah, that's a really good point. Like, because I think that you think back to, you know, that, that team, when Chisik was there, I mean, I think he probably, that was probably his biggest challenge is like, hey man, I got this really cool call that I want to run. Damn. I never got to call it because I just turned my guys loose and whatever. So anyway, I thought that was a good point. Yeah, that, that may be like his biggest quote unquote coaching move this year is just teaching guys how to play football and then getting out of the way.

Instead of, you know, hey, I got all these super cool intricate things which, I mean, he's going to run some, don't get me wrong. But, but yeah, I'd rather have a well trained unit in playing football than a guy that, I mean, we've, I think we've beat that horse to death in the past on the battleship calls and joysticks and things of that nature. So yeah, I'm fascinated to see how it goes. I'm, I'm ready for what are we, two months away?

Well, here's the other thing that I'm trying to square that doesn't make any sense with this team. Obviously we've made a financial commitment to these guys and built relationships, but the whole point of nil, the portal, the flattening of talent, guys going and seeking opportunity elsewhere is you shouldn't be able to stockpile talent at premium pay up positions. Texas has stockpiled talent at every position on the D line and it doesn't make sense. Several of those guys should have transferred out and gone and started at Arizona State and A and M and a bunch of other places. They're all here. And we've got dudes on our three deep at defensive end who should be starting for every team in the Big 12. I'm trying to figure out why are they here? How. How did we do that?

I think it lends itself to the point I made about Kenny, Texas State, you're in Austin, you've been sold division to where you have true nil power outside of, you know, whatever other things you're getting. You believe in the program and you honestly think that it's the best spot for you.

Yeah. So Jet Bush told a really interesting story. So when, you know, Patterson was, what, quality control guy here for a while or whatever, you know, like, right. The coach, rehab or whatever we had. He said Patterson was great, but they're standing on the sideline, and Patterson walked over to Bush and a couple of guys. He goes, double reverse pass, coming right here. And they were like, huh? And then ball snaps, double reverse pass. Patterson just walked off, like, with his eyebrow up, like.

Told you. Yeah.

Jet was like, that's cool. Also, maybe tell someone on the staff next time.

Right? Yeah, tell somebody on the field.

We could have stopped that maybe if you.

I've told this story before, but it's like, you know, you got deadpool lefty up, and Augie moves the shortstop oppo into the six hole. Like. Like, coaches a pull hitter. He's like, yeah. And then one hop, ground ball, just double play, and you're like, what? There's nothing in the world that told you that you should have moved him there. Like, what? Like, just. And then he just gives you that look. Like, I don't know. Is that a feeling?

Did he just blow it off, or do you, like, give y' all a little stare down?

[Randy]

Well, yeah, it was a little. Little kind of wink there, but, like, whatever, man. That's why you're the best.

That's pretty cool. That is cool. Yeah. That is one thing that is pretty phenomenal is. I mean, I could do it some, but really good coaches, just when they see the formation and they're like, oh, twins. Wide. Oh, yeah, it's gonna.

Seen this one before. Yeah, yeah, I know this guy.

And it's like, speed out, and you're

like, this is the part of the game where he would do this. This is the formation. Yep, Here it is. Yep.

Yeah, that is pretty impressive. But if you around ball that much, it's not that impressive.
