This week, we head to Main Street in Annapolis to meet Kristen Umana, co-owner of Local Coast, a homegrown coastal lifestyle and apparel brand that got its start in 2021 and now has stores in Annapolis and Severna Park. Kristen tells us how an idea born during COVID grew from online sales and local pop-ups into two brick-and-mortar stores. We talk about her background with Ralph Lauren and Hermès, the family effort behind Local Coast's original designs, why crabs and Orange Crushes are naturally big sellers, and how the company gives back to organizations including the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Annapolis Maritime Museum. We also get into running a business with your spouse and four kids in the mix, the differences between the Annapolis and Severna Park stores, and where Local Coast might be headed next. It's a truly local brand inspired by the Chesapeake and the people who call this area home. Have a listen. Anne Arundel County may be surrounded by water, but protecting it begins in yards, neighborhoods, and communities across the county. In this week's Local Business Spotlight, Suzanne Etgen, co-founder and founding executive director of the Anne Arundel County Watershed Stewards Academy, explains how the nonprofit trains residents to become community leaders who can identify environmental problems and help turn practical solutions into action. The conversation covers the academy's certification program, stormwater management, native plants, tree protection, mosquito control and the small everyday choices that can collectively improve local waterways. Etgen also discusses the academy's growth since 2008, the more than 400 watershed stewards it has trained, and how residents can get involved through classes, volunteer projects and simple changes at home.
