In today's bonus podcast, we sit down with Kathryn Wynkoop, a remarkable client of Bello Machre, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Kathryn has been a resident for about 20 years and, as we learned, nothing stands in her way! Despite any disability, Kathryn holds down two jobs, loves her Bello Machre family, is active in her church, and is preparing for a long-awaited vacation! Did someone say disability? When you walk through the front door of Bello Machre, you will likely be greeted by Kathryn, who is a resident as well as an employee. When you walk in the front door of the Piup Moyer Rec Center in Annapolis on a Wednesday afternoon, Kathryn's smiling face will be there to offer a hearty hello! Because of the Bello Machre family, Kathryn's life is more rewarding and more fulfilling; and they have been doing it for our neighbors for more than 50 years! We also chat with Dr. Robert Ireland, the President and CEO of Bello Machre, about the changes he has seen in his time at the helm, and it is encouraging, despite more work to be done. We discuss the various programs available to residents and people with disabilities living at home throughout the State. And on June 13th, there is a great way to get to know the folks at Bello Machre with Every Step Counts, a fun walk/bike/skate-a-thon and party at AACC. Truly an incredible organization, and truly some inspiring people--I'm looking at you, Kathryn! Have a listen! Dennis Diken, drummer and founding member of The Smithereens, joins us for a bonus podcast ahead of the band's one-night-only show with Marshall Crenshaw at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis on Friday, June 5. From "Blood and Roses" and "Behind the Wall of Sleep" to "Only a Memory" and "A Girl Like You," The Smithereens built a sound that still hits hard—power pop, rock, British Invasion hooks, and Jersey grit all wrapped into songs that have aged a whole lot better than most of us. In this conversation, Dennis talks about what fans can expect when The Smithereens return to Annapolis, how guest vocalists step into songs that are so closely tied to Pat DiNizio, and why the band's music has never felt stuck in one era. We also dig into some deeper cuts, what still grabs his ear in new music, the vinyl he would hate to lose, and the dream collaborator he'd love to have onstage or in the studio. Very limited tickets remain for The Smithereens with Marshall Crenshaw at Rams Head On Stage on June 5. Details are available at RamsHeadOnStage.com, and you can keep up with the band at officialsmithereens.com. Normally, I'd say "have a listen now, and then grab your best friend and get a pair of tickets!" But not today. Put this on pause, get the tickets first (they are selling out) and THEN come back and... Have a listen!
