Gary Parish (0:58)
Gary Parish here with Dusty May, head coach at Michigan. It's year two now in, in year one, you win the Big Ten tournament, you go to the Sweet 16. What, if anything, did you learn about the Big Ten in year one?
Dusty May (1:10)
Well, it's as difficult as we anticipated. The coaching, the environments, and obviously the talent in the league was exceptional. And so it feels like we've been here much longer than one year because of all that.
Gary Parish (1:25)
As it pertains to conference tournaments specifically. I've talked to some coaches over the years and some like, say, hey, it's just a thing in between the end of the regular season and the NCAA tournament. I don't prioritize it that much. Others have said, if we got a trophy and we're playing for it, I want to win it. What's your approach? What did it mean to you to hold that trophy, to go into a.
Dusty May (1:45)
Tournament like the Big Ten tournament with 14 teams, all of them NCAA caliber, and even a few that weren't in the Big Ten tournament were on the bubble until the very end. And to play three Swiss, three Sweet 16 teams to win a championship, we'll take it.
Gary Parish (1:58)
Yeah. So you have a successful first season. Obviously, in this era of college basketball, you have to rebuild immediately. Almost regardless of who you are or where you're at, you get into the transfer portal and are able to put together pretty quickly one of the best transfer classes in the country. And it's headlined by a guy 247 Sports has has labeled as the best transfer in the country. That's Yaxel Lindenberg, who comes to you from uab. Why did you prioritize him in the way that you did?
Dusty May (2:28)
Well, the first Reason is because we played against him. And so we knew his impact in the game went beyond his numbers, his ability to get loose basketballs to be a matchup problem one through five. We just felt like he fit us. And then obviously I want to give our guys on last year's team a lot of credit, the way they played the game, the way they interacted with each other. And as we know, when these players go into the portal, they talk to your current players. And so if you're able to help them get better and maximize their abilities, then typically that helps out. But we knew how good he was because we competed against him.
