The place I want to start today is in Midtown Manhattan for St. John's the reigning Big east champions and preseason number one team in the top 25 and one. They return to Madison Square Garden this weekend to play a real game for the first time since the Red Storm won the Big east tournament last March. Their opponent on this Saturday, it was Alabama, and the result was an upset in NYC. LeBaron Feyline took 17 shots for the Crimson Tide. He made 10 of them, finished with 25 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and what was a 10396 victory for Alabama. He was great. Alabama's guards, broadly speaking, were great. Kyle Boone, wonderful to see you here on a Sunday. I love and respect you enough. You can be completely honest with me. You can be honest with me. How concerned should I be about my Red Storm? After making them the preseason number one team in the top 25 and one back in April, I never budged. Even if there were reasons, perhaps that I should have. How concerned should I be right now?
Matt Norlander
Yeah, first of all, great to see you on the Sunday. I don't. I don't get to see you very often on Sundays. It's usually a weekday. So I'm glad Norlander is getting some time away this afternoon. I get to see you on a Sunday? Great question. I come into this podcast, I was ready to say you're totally wrong GP Like I'm ready to to put you in a corner bad boy. Having St. John's number one. I think you kind of cornered yourself there and I respect the fact that you let it ride. Right. Like you, you had St. John's at number one against probably the consensus, obviously they were not the number one team in the preseason AP top 25 poll or the coaches poll. I think the true answer GP is the jury's probably still out.
Gary Parrish
Right.
Matt Norlander
Right now that seems like number one may have been a little bit too ambitious. But you have to keep in mind with this St. John's team, there are nine newcomers on this team. As Rick Patino mentioned post game after that loss to Alabama, there are a lot of areas this team needs to improve. Patino made a full list number, number one was their one on one defense. It's really hard to defend one on one for this St. John's team and especially against this Alabama offense. He felt like St. John's tried to match Alabama's pace with the quick shooting. The St. John's team, not totally built to do that and I think just kind of adding to that GP like this St John's team, because they are so new and because they're facing an Alabama team that knows their identity. They love to play the run and fun, the quick shooting, the high volume threes. St. John's still trying to find its identity. So all that to say, J.P. i don't think you're wrong, but time will tell on this St. John's team whether or not they can eventually reach the expectations that you had for them. I, I think Patino after the game said, we still have the potential to be an outstanding basketball team, but right now that is, that's not the case for St. John's they are, they're, they're, I think, just a little ways away from reaching their potential as a team.
Gary Parrish
Overall, they are very much a work in progress. That, that much is, is undeniable. The talent is still in a good place. You have a Hall of Fame coach in charge of it. That's typically a nice combination. I still like the roster. I just, and this isn't unique to me. I think many people have these concerns, like do the pieces fit well together and who is your actual point guard? Yeah, because I did move to St. John's in April and as I've explained many times since then, it was based on the roster in place and the idea that Ian Jackson would be what Rick Pitino had called him, which was the next great St. John's point guard. Yeah, as we know, he's not even playing point guard at St. John's in fact, on Saturday against Alabama, he wasn't even in the starting lineup. So there's been a lot of reasons to have small concerns about, okay, where's this thing actually headed. And then of course, you get to second game of the season, high profile opponent, got great guards. And then maybe the only natural point guard or true point guard on your entire roster, Dylan Darling. He's the transfer from Idaho State. He wasn't even able to go weird deal suffered a calf injury. Thinks it happened in the opening game as he fell into the photographers and made contact with like a cheerleader or an official. Like, he fell in and make contact with the people who are around the court and feels like it may have been bothered, then missed some practices, had said before tip he was going to try to go, but ultimately did not play.
Matt Norlander
Yep.
Gary Parrish
So St. John's had to play with with zero natural point guards on the roster. And in many ways it looked like that. There's some disturbing numbers in the box score. I mean, they shot 49% for the field and that's not good. Giving up 100 at home, not good. They shot 18 more free throws than Alabama shot and still could not, you know, close the gaps in other areas to win what was on paper, they were projected to win. So the truth is, I think it's still very early November 9th. Like, let's relax. But, you know, if you were counting on Isaiah Sellers to be your point guard, you know, hey, three assists, four turnovers. Yes, yes. You know, yeah. Nothing any quality college basketball team has ever asked him to do. And if we're being honest at this point to do that. You're not even asking him something to do, something you believe he can still do because you've moved off of that completely. So it might come down to you've got this incredible roster, like immensely talented people at four different positions, and then can Dylan Darling get the ball where it needs to be? Run offense in a more traditional way? Is that the best version of St. John's perhaps. But if that's the best version of St. John's and this is my ultimate problem, to circle back to preseason number one, if the best version of St. John's involves them using Dylan Darling at point guard from the opening tip, then how good is St. John's right to talk about while also acknowledging, I can't emphasize this enough, it's still very, very early. And it's not like they lost to a bad team. They lost to a team that looks great, that has consistently been really good under current code and, you know, LeBaron, fine line. This is something I talk about all the time. We've spent so much time talking about who you get out of the transfer portal, what five star recruit you sign. Often the difference makers for Final Four teams are legitimate NBA prospects. You get back to school for one reason or another, and I'll let you speak on this. LeBaron Pylon, he entered the draft with Drew. If he'd have stayed in, most people think he's where between 20 and 40, 20 and 50, but he picked somewhere. Is that you covered the draft for us? Is that a fair assessment? If Laverne Fineline stayed in the draft, he on an NBA roster right now. Alabama got him back to school and now it looks like instead of an NBA rookie, perhaps a college all American.
Matt Norlander
That's, that's absolutely right. And I think a lot of college teams, GP are winning on the margins and winning by convincing those types of prospects. Guys who would be maybe late first round, early second round. Phylon is a perfect example of this and saying, hey, look, you can go be an NBA first round pick next year. You could do it this year if you want, but we're going to give you X amount of money to come back and your stock is either going to be improved or roughly the same. Like your situation is not going to change drastically. And we're seeing the result here early from Alabama. I mean Phylon looks amazing and probably the snap judgment I think from this first week of the college basketball season is like he's probably improved his stock from where he would have been as, you know, a late first round pick, an early second round pick to now. Like, you know, maybe we're talking about Phylon here in a couple weeks as someone who's a late lottery pick, like someone who goes mid to late first round instead of, you know, late first round, early second round. So that's absolutely the case. I, I think GP for, for this Alabama team, like the, the ceiling for this Alabama team is so high. We've seen NATO take a team to a Final Four already playing this run and fun style. They, they like to go up tempo and, and Phylon I think is going to kind of be the spearhead of this offense, which predictably again is so far. I mean this was a St. John team last year that kind of hung its hat on relying on defense. They're not quite there yet, but when you can hang nearly 100 points on Rick Pitino and St. John's like you're doing something right on offense. There's a lot of pieces on this Alabama team that I think if You're a Crimson Tide fan. Should be really, really exciting for the season.
Gary Parrish
Yeah. And you know, I know Alabama fans have maybe not forever worried, but like there's always this lingering, like when is the, the Duke job or the North Carolina job or a similar job gonna come for NATO's? And I know he's been approached but like the thing they also need to be aware of is like the, at some point if you are playing this modern of a style of basketball, like the NBA becomes interested in you as well. Yeah, I'm not, I'm not suggesting that's where his career goes next, but I just know that NBA franchises are aware that the way Alabama is playing basketball is, is, is appealing to, to them at the next level. And I wouldn't be surprised to someday hear his name get NBA stuff connected to it. Right now he is undeniably one of the best college basketball coaches working and I think you. He has gotten his program to a point where Tom Izzo's program is where Matt Painter's program is where. I don't mean to keep just naming Big Ten coaches, but Bo Ryan's program is. I like wrote a column one time where I. My point was I don't care who's on the roster as long as Beau Ryan is still the coach. I will have Wisconsin in the preseason top 25 because they always finish there. There was like this wild stretch where they never finished outside of the top four. The Big Ten like forever. They were just always there. It did not matter. And Nate's kind of like got to that place where you know, this is college basketball roster turnover is heavy almost everywhere. I don't really need to know too much if he's, if it's his team. They're going to be good and they're going to be fun and it looks like they're good and fun again. And oh, buddy, they better be good because have you seen their schedule coming up? Okay, they're in the middle of a four game stretch. They were at St. John's on Saturday, so good start. Yep. Next up at home against Purdue. That's number one Purdue. Then you get Illinois and Chicago, then Gonzaga in Las Vegas. So this is a four game stretch against the teams for Alabama against the team Frank. 19th, 7th, 3rd and 8th at Ken Palm 10 so far. And if they are undefeated still coming out of that, they'll probably rank number one in the country because they'll have. Yeah, at that point they would have wins over St. John's on the road, Purdue at home, Illinois In Illinois, Gonzaga in Nevada. Yeah, you come out of that, it's, it's, it becomes difficult to deny you the, the number one ranking next to your name. But honestly, like if you can just get through this board and this four game stretch, two and two, you kind of feel okay about it. Three and one. I think you tech right now.
Matt Norlander
Yeah. I mean, and this is a, this is a loaded non conference schedule for NATO. I mean, I don't know exactly what he was doing. I, I respect it. I respect it because I think a lot of coaches probably like to do kind of cupcake schedules to make sure that they feel good, they feel confident going into conference play. But Purdue, Illinois, Gonzaga, as you mentioned, they got Clemson early December, their first game of that month. Arizona just before Christmas. This is a, this is a really tough schedule for Alabama. They are intentionally challenging themselves in non conference play. And yeah, we'll learn a lot about this Alabama team here over the next week and really over the next couple weeks before SEC play starts in, in early January. But so far, I mean, the early returns on this Alabama team very well put together. They have a star in Phylon, some really interesting pieces and I think the front court is a lot better than maybe people realize expected from this Alabama team. When you can match up with Zubie Edgafore and you know, the, the front Court of St. John's the way that they did. I mean there's not a lot of St. John's teams that are going to lose the offensive rebounding battle and you know, Alabama kind of took it to him on both ends of the floor.
Gary Parrish
So big win for the Crimson Tide. Tough loss for the Red Storm. Let's move on. Caleb Wilson. Whoo. Biggest high profile game of the weekend. That was Friday night in Chapel hill. And the five star freshman, he gave Kansas the business. 247 in the victory, then just started wilding out in the media availability. Took a shot at Kansas star Darren Peterson. Fun stuff all around. We'll talk North Carolina, Kansas next. First though, let's get a word from our partners.

Final score North Carolina 87, Kansas 74 Caleb Wilson got 24 points and seven rebounds. Five star freshman was great on the court then. He was also great with the media. In short, Caleb Wilson after the game more or less said he's tired of the haters acting like he's not one of the very best freshmen in this super stacked freshman class. He said he wanted to show the world, the whole world, everybody from Chapel Hill to Cambodia and all points in between that he belongs in the same class AS Cameron Boozer, AJ DeBonsa Darren Peterson unless they'll co opied in there as well. And then he explained that he is constantly changing his wallpaper on his phone to things he believes will motivate him. Naturally somebody was like what's your wallpaper looking like today? And he said in advance of the Kansas game he changed his wallpaper to a picture that represented his feeling after the McDonald's All American game when I quote didn't touch the ball and Darren Peterson was on my team so that was my wallpaper. Lol. Excellent work. Strong job. What'd you make of Caleb Wilson's performance both on the court and off because he's obviously fabulous on the court, but my God, I can't get a microphone in front of him fast enough. I ready to hear him talk again.
Matt Norlander
We love a petty king. I don't know. I don't know if you're of that belief, gp, but I just love a petty king. And this was just an Alzheimer. I mean, like the, the coolness which. With which he was kind of exuding confidence after that win. I mean, you got to be feeling yourself a little bit, right? Like, you. You really came out on a big stage for North Carolina against a really good, high expectations Kansas team that, you know, by all accounts, people believe that Darren Peterson could be and will be in the national player of the year conversation for Kansas. And he outdoed Peterson just straight up, like, he was the best player, I think, on. On both teams. And you're talking about the best trash talkers or just the best talkers in this freshman class. Like, he's got to be top two. And I don't think he's number two, gp. Like, I really enjoyed listening to him talk after that game and just going through his process of, you know, how he almost like Michael Jordan's himself. He. He, you know, like, he just finds ways to find disrespect and, you know, like, he's probably over the McDonald's All American game by now, but it sure didn't seem like he was. Yeah, I mean, and so, like, I. I loved it. I thought it was awesome. Gp, if you're starting a team right now from scratch, you take in Caleb Wilson or Darren Peterson straight up, you gotta pick between one of the two.
Gary Parrish
If I'm being completely honest, I would take Darren Peterson.
Matt Norlander
You're so. You're disrespecting Caleb Wilson. You're disrespecting him. You're gonna be on a wallpaper.
Gary Parrish
What? I'm gonna end up on the wallpaper next. Hold on, let me. Let's get a good Snapchat for the wallpaper. You ready? That's for your wallpaper, Caleb. All right. One, two, three. All right. You could put us both on the wallpaper. Perhaps we deserve it. I would take Darren Peterson, but that should not be interpreted as a slight towards Caleb Wilson. And I have noticed this already because Caleb is the loudest to say it, I guess, or the boldest and perhaps the best. But, like, it's already, like, we're not even a week into the season completely, and it's already a thing of. Why am I not talked about the way they're talked about. So we have set up this weird thing. This is like, follow me here, because I think this is funny because it's. It's a. It's a construct that has been made that is creating all of this. We have decided there's a Big Three, right? We could have said Big Four. We could have said Big Ten. We could have said just. We didn't have to put a number on it. We could have just said an amazing freshman class. Oh, buddy, you won't believe this. Freshman class. But we started saying Big Three. Everybody was like, there's a Big Three. And it's. I don't mean you and I. I mean, does everybody. That's the way people talk about this freshman class. Yeah. You know, it's an incredible freshman class. It's the big three. Darren Peterson, A.J. deVonts, the Cameron Boozer. Cameron Boozer, DeBonsa, Peterson. Put them in any order. Who you would you take? Who, who, who would you take to for your college basketball team? Who would you take for your NBA team? Who's the Big Three? Who's the best of the Big Three? But it's always been a Big Three. And then co opied, like, does what he does, and he's like, yo, I don't know why I'm not in that conversation. And now you get Caleb Wilson, like, I don't know why I'm not in that conversation. And I imagine Cam Ward's going to stand up and say it at some point. There's obviously. So we've got what is possibly the greatest freshman class of all time. But the way we've been talking about it, we've just really focused on the top three, and it becomes like a rope at a club. You're either on this side of it or that side of it. Are you one of these freshmen, like the Big Three? Are you just one of the other freshmen? And the guys who have been considered the other ones, they don't like that they're the other ones. They think they belong in any group with anybody. And it is shaped already, like a week into this thing. And it's. The freshman class has delivered over and over again.
Matt Norlander
It's been. It's been fantastic. Yeah. I mean, and you know, Arkansas guard Darrius Acuff maybe didn't acquit himself well against Michigan State, but he looks really good. Caleb Wilson's been fantastic. Cam Ward, as you mentioned, from Michigan State, looked really good against Arkansas over the weekend. Like this freshman class, I think, obviously, like, you know, you can talk about Darren Peterson you talk about Cameron Boozer, you can talk about AJ DeBancer. They're going to look really good. And you know, if I were to rank them, I probably would put them in the top three. They would still be probably the big three, but the entirety. I think the depth of this freshman class is, is going to continue to surprise people because I don't think this Caleb Wilson performance was some anomaly. I, I think he is legitimately, you know, potentially going to be in the mix for an all American case if he continues to play the way that he does. You, you know, you talk about a depth of this freshman class with Coa Pete as well. Yeah, there's, there's a lot of really good young players in college basketball this season who made performances in the first week of the season and I think will continue to stand out, you know, kind of as the season goes along as well.
Gary Parrish
Yeah. So Wilson gets a lot of the attention because of the way he played and then because of the way he talked. But all around this was good stuff from North Carolina. And I gotta imagine you're a Tar Heel fan or a Tar Heel coach, like you couldn't feel better about things right now. There's this sort of anxiety attached to the season. Like, you know, it's been up and down with Hubert. Some really high highs, but some really like, what are we doing? Lows. I, everybody understands he's entering this season with real job pressure. That's not fun considering he is an alum and also widely regarded as like the nicest man in the world. And so it's just, there's, there's an uncomfortableness to it and then uncertainty connected to it. Like, all right, we could be good, but will we be? Because I thought we were going to be that one year and we weren't. But then I, you know, I didn't know about that other year, but then we were in the championship game and there's just like. And for your big first big statement to be win over fellow blue blood program and not just you scored more points than the other team, but you did it with your, your, your five star freshman. Being a freshman star like that you didn't do it with. I just think that's all early in the season your five star freshman shows up in a big game and like delivers, that starts to be something. Okay, maybe, maybe now we know we can count on this. Yep. You know, you know, who knew co op was co op before he did what he did the other night? Outside of maybe Tommy Lloyd. Not. I'm not talking about him like He's a Division 2 prospect, but like he wasn't expected to come out and dominate Florida's front line. And then he came out and did it. You're like, okay, now we might be dealing with something special. And what we saw from Caleb Wilson on Friday night in a high profile matchup against another high profile freshman, he was excellent. And if I'm a North Carolina fan, you know, it's still early, but I'm, I'm starting to go, okay, maybe we got something here, maybe we got something here and, and we can, we can turn this thing into, into a really good place. They look certainly better on Friday night than most people, our, ourselves included, thought they would look. We, we, we're talking more favorably and positively about North Carolina now than we did probably all offseason because there's a lot of questions connected to them. But now we're looking at it and what, at least what we saw on Friday looked good.
Matt Norlander
And I would add to that gp, like, it's not just that Caleb Wilson looked awesome because Obviously he looked awesome 24, 7, 4 in that game. Arizona transfer Henry Vassar looked great. 20 points, 4 assists in the win. I thought that was, you know, another kind of potential X factor of how this season will go for North Carolina. So far, so good. Seth Trimble with 17, 8 and 3 and Trimble to his credit, was like a strength for Carolina in this game. I thought, you know, in, in the offseason that Carolina may have missed an opportunity by not upgrading off of him in the off season. May have been wrong. Like this is someone who's been consistent, reliable. His developmental trajectory continues to go on the up and up and yeah, like the. I think the pieces for this Carolina team, like, you know, I don't want to overreact too much, but I think you have to be optimistic about how this team looks, how the pieces fit. We talked about St. John's earlier in this podcast, right? Like the, the talent, obviously really good questions about how the pieces fit so far for Carolina. I think the, the, the overwhelming consensus was the talent's pretty good and we'll see how the pieces fit well so far. You know, two games in the season, obviously the pieces seem to fit pretty well for this Carolina team on the whole.
Gary Parrish
On Kansas, let's real quick on them. Everybody knows Darren Peterson is going to be great. The question is how great does he need to be every night for them to be good? And the early returns on that aren't, aren't encouraging for ku because if you Watched it. It does kind of look like they need him to be superhuman for them to be what, what it is Kansas fans expect from KU under Bill Self. Like, you look at this roster and you go, okay, there's some talent on it, but who else is a Kansas level player in a, in the way that we think about Kansas basketball under Bill Self? Like Floyd Badonga is immensely talented, but like is he going, is this, is this going to be a breakthrough season for him against Carolina? He, he just got eight points and seven rebounds. You know, you, you think of Al Marco Jackson, a former five star recruit, but I think you can tell something by the fact that he's not even in the starting lineup suggests that he has not turned into what it is you hope. A five star prospect going into his third year of college, even though he missed all of last season, a former five star prospect going into a third year of college, if he's coming off your bench and that's your starting lineup, that tells me something about him as well. Melvin Council has been good, but will he be good at this level for this program to the extent they need him to be? I, this is why you saw Kansas closer to say 25 in a lot of rankings as opposed to one. There's a time where you were always going to see Kansas closer to 1 than 25. This time in a lot of rankings, you saw them closer to 25 than 1. And the reason is because outside of Darren Peterson, the roster relative to their own lofty standards at KU seems to be lacking some. And if you held that opinion going into Friday night, there ain't much that happened on Friday night that that moved you off of it, is there?
Matt Norlander
No, I, I don't think so. I don't think so. I mean you go to Ken Palm right now GP and, and Kansas is at number 30. So yeah, I mean you're right. Closer to 25 than to 1. That's not typically the case with Kansas under Bill Self. We'll see kind of how this team progresses. I, I like some of the pieces that they have, but I think to your point, like you go down the roster and just on paper, like Darren Peterson, obviously Kansas level talent that you would expect, but some of the pieces around him, like I think there are some, some real questions about the talent level on this Kansas team and, and maybe this was kind of a result that maybe opens the eyes and maybe even an inflection point for this Kansas team moving forward to kind of reconfigure to rejigger some of the expectations for this year. I'm not going to write them off just yet. But yeah, unless Darren Peterson is is someone who can continually rise everyone around him, which maybe he is like I I think on any given night he's bound to go for 30 points and 10 assists. Like he is someone who I think can genuinely elevate the talent around him.
Gary Parrish
But.
Matt Norlander
When you're questioning the talent around him, I think that is a real concern when you're evaluating this Kansas team moving forward. And yeah, we'll, we'll see kind of what that looks like for Kansas here in the near future. But I think this result 8774 loss at North Carolina certainly opens some eyes and should maybe cause you to reconsider kind of the ceiling floor case for this Kansas team overall.
Gary Parrish
Looking ahead for both teams. Next up for North Carolina they get Radford on Tuesday. Shouts to Radford legends Doug Day, Javante Green. Next up for Kansas, Tuesday's game with Texas A and M, Corpus Christie and KU's next game against a ranked opponent. That'll be November 18th against Duke. When we come back, we're going to bounce around the other notable results from the weekend. Then we'll look ahead to the next two days. But first let's let's get another word from our partner.

All right, kb before we get to some of the other games involving teams with numbers next to their names, I want to tell you about the Veterans Classic because I was there on Friday night in Annapolis, a doubleheader, I believe. This was year 14 and it's just incredible. I, I've been to not all of them, but I think at this point most of them. It certainly feels like most of them. And it's just always awesome to be, just to be in Annapolis. I try to tell people that you feel like you're in a different time, like a different. It just feels like not 2025. I don't know, there's something about the water and the, maybe the, just the trees changing colors and just the history there. I don't know, it feels like I like it. I love going there. And we had a doubleheader this year. Game one was Tulsa, Rhode Island. Tulsa wins at 8265. Golden Hurricane now two zero and have they've already jumped from 139th at Kinpom to 115th at Kinpom. Like the American is wide open. Depending on what you think of of Memphis. Memphis is the preseason pick there. Tulsa was picked, I believe eight. You know, I don't want to overreact to one game, but that looked like a team that's going to finish better than eight in the American to me. And if Memphis isn't clear cut better than everybody else in the American, then like absolutely, Tulsa is a type of team that could win the American. So impressive stuff from Aaron Conkle's team and it was an interesting little thing and we're going to get this throughout college basketball every once in a while. Just sort of state of the game type stuff. But young man named David Green gets 14 points, five rebounds, four assists for Tulsa. Last year he was Rhode Island's captain. Rhode Island's captain last season played against Rhode island this season in his second game. What's funny is he played for Conkle at La Tech.
Matt Norlander
Yeah.
Gary Parrish
Then went to Rhode island, played for Archie Miller for two years, and now he's back at with Cockle, but this time at Tulsa. So there was a lot of familiar faces around there. I was talking to Archie before the game. He was joking, of course, but he was like, I hope he misses every shot. Was like, I hope he makes every shot. So they were having fun with it, but that was a, that was a neat little thing. Then in the nightcap, Yale 97, Navy 68. It was a matchup of projected conference champs. Yell supposed to win the Navy. Yale is supposed to win the Ivy. Navy is supposed to win the Patriot. And Yale looked great. Yeah, maybe that shouldn't be surprising because they've been in the NCAA tournament three of the top three the past four years. But Nick Townsend got 23 points on 12 shots. He made four threes in the first half. Probably headed for another tournament appearance. They started the season 102nd at Kenpom. They played one game. Now, Friday night was their first game, and they jumped 22 spots. So they're now up to number 80. Yell is. And they, they look the part. They've got a game against Alabama coming up. I asked James Jones, I was like, so, like, you know, what good teams look like and what NCAA tournament teams look like and what teams that advance in the bracket look like. Do you got one? He said, let me play Alabama, then I'll tell you. But I do like, he clearly likes his team. And they, they, they looked, they looked like they'd be a nightmare 125 matchup for somebody in March, based on what I saw on Friday. And special shouts to Jack Sullivan, 611 freshman at Yale. I was at shoot around on Friday, just doing my own thing. Tall young man walks over to me. He says, gary Parrish? I said, yes, sir. He said, wanted to introduce myself. I listened to the podcast.
Matt Norlander
How about that?
Gary Parrish
Hey, we're making it. We're making an impact in the Ivy Leagues. I'm making an impression on Ivy League students who, who thought I would ever do that.
Matt Norlander
I mean, I knew, you know, because there's more of us gp, but still, I mean, still cool to see.
Gary Parrish
It was nice. I appreciated to come over and saying that. And then he, you know, came off the bench and, and played meaningful minutes for, for Yale. So it was nice to meet Jack Sullivan. Yale looked great. And now let's move it over to East Lansing, where I got home yesterday, flew home on Saturday from Annapolis and was able to settle in front of the television in time for what was another high profile nine conference game. Michigan State and Arkansas final score Spartans 69, Razorback 66. I saw you bragging in the slack. I saw you on slack. You were in there bragging about the Razorbacks. And then when I got in there a little later on, you had gotten real quiet. You got ripple, you got real mousy. You got real quiet in that slack channel after, after the second half unfolded, you know, like, what did you make of what you saw? Michigan State, Arkansas.
Matt Norlander
Yeah. Early in that game, I think my comment was something like Arkansas is sick or something like that. Like, and my point remains, like, pretty sick team. Love their talent.
Gary Parrish
Interrupt you. I think they're going to be good.
Matt Norlander
I do too. Yeah, like I was actually. Obviously they lost this game and it's pretty hard to go to the Breslin center and win on the road. But overall, like, I was pretty impressed from both teams. I thought Arkansas did a pretty good job in this game. Ended up losing by three points. I really like what John Caliperi has put together. Like Billy Richmond flashing some, some big moments in that game. The two freshmen for, for, for Arkansas, Darius Acuff and Malik Thomas, obviously, like they basically out dueled Michigan State's two freshmen. And, and that was a post game point of discussion for both Caliperi and Izzo. I noticed, I mean like Cam Ward who we Talked about earlier, 18 points, 10 rebounds for Michigan State. He was tremendous. Did not expect that. And then they also got seven rebounds, six points from freshman Jordan Scott. Did Michigan State. So really good win for Michigan State. You know, they were only 1 of 14 from 3 point range. Still get the win. Really dominated on the offensive boards. Got 19 offensive rebounds. And Caliperi coming in this game, told the local media like I'm expecting football like physicality. I think he, I think he got it. I think he got it. And they were on the receiving end of most of that physicality. Just not able to match up physically, I think with this Michigan State team. But again, I stand by my point.
Gary Parrish
Gp.
Matt Norlander
I think this is going to be a pretty good Arkansas team. I know someone in the, in the chat just earlier said, should Arkansas Razorbacks fans be panicking right now? I think the answer to that, just based off this result and what I've seen from this Arkansas team so far is absolutely not. I, I think this is a pretty talented Arkansas team. I'd be, I'd be pretty thrilled about the prospects for Arkansas this season and for Michigan State given what they did at home this weekend.
Gary Parrish
Oh yeah, like that sounds like a crazy question to me to Arkansas fans. What I would be asking them is like, how encouraged are you about what you saw? Because you've got a freshman point guard, you're relying on two freshmen playing prominent roles. And you went into the President center, historically one of the toughest places to play in America, and you had a shot to win the game. Now you didn't win it. And your freshman had a freshman moment in the final minute. You don't want to foul that. You don't want to foul jump. You don't want to get three free throws with 44 seconds left or whatever. It was so like, you know, learning curve stuff, all that. But I. I sort of thought was thinking of this last night as I was watching the game, and I could have probably just sent a text to research and got a dancer, but I didn't want to put too much on them. But, like, how many freshman point guards in November have ever gone into the Breslin center as a visitor and wanted to get what I get?
Matt Norlander
Very few. I gotta be there for you.
Gary Parrish
I mean, I bet it's. I bet the list is small. I mean, I mean, you could. I'm. I'm actually. I'm obviously shrinking the sample size by just saying November. But, like, ever. How many freshman point guards ever go into the Breslin center and win? And if I'm an Arkansas fan, I'm like, we had a shot. Yeah. And that. That team beat us on this night. But I think if I'm an Arkansas fan, maybe I'm going. But I watch the game. We have. I think we have a higher ceiling than that. Them. They're better than us on November 8th on an. At their place. What about on March 8th on a neutral court? We'll be comfortable with them. I like. I. This. Arkansas, like, I like. We. We started by talking about St. John's pieces and. And like St. John's I. Because I. I feel like I'm talking at extremes. It's like they're preseason number one. And then I'm like, I don't know if they'll ever win a game. St. John's is going to be good. Like, no. Like, there's no scenario where they're not good. The question is, can they be the best with a roster that doesn't seem to fit well together? Right. I kind of like the way Arkansas's roster fits together. And as it matures and as those, you know, as Darius a cuff gets more reps under his belt and it, you know. But all of this has an opportunity to come together in a way where we could be looking up, say middle of February and be like, man, I know John carefully. His first year in fable was up and down and weird. But this the second team he's got, it's consistently good and has a chance to compete at the tip top of the sec. I, I think both these teams are going to be in the top 25 basically all season long. And you, you, you almost couldn't name something that sounds too big of an accomplishment for me and connect it to Arkansas that that team has a high.
Matt Norlander
Ceiling and gp not to be a hater, but I'm like, just thinking in top of my head, like, what are the rosters that I've been absolutely thrilled about that caliper he's put together the last couple years. Like, it's probably not the Arkansas team that we saw last year. It's probably not, you know, the last couple of rosters that he put together at Kentucky. Although he did have some nice pieces the last couple years with, you know, Reed Shepherd. They had, you know, Rob Dillingham, like, they had some pretty good pieces. But yeah, I think just in totality, like what they've put together with Arkansas. And we talked about earlier, like, convincing guys to come back, like, you know, Billy Richmond, for example, like, this is a guy who, you know, he probably would have been selected somewhere in the NBA draft, decides to come back this year. Thought he looked pretty good in, in some sp. Some spurts in this game. D.J. wagner is, you know, an upperclassman now. He's a junior. Darius Acuff, a freshman. Like, they've got some, some really exciting pieces on this roster. Gotta be feeling pretty good. Kind of just about where Arkansas is in the direction of that program right now.
Gary Parrish
Yeah. So Arkansas, Michigan State, that was a fun one in primetime on Saturday night. And then if you stayed up late, we got another big brand on. Big brand. Gonzaga. Oklahoma. Not quite as competitive. The Zags, I mean, they led by as many as 25. They win it by 15. Final score 83.68. We don't have to spend much time on it. I don't know if you stayed up for the whole thing, but Gram Ek was terrific. 19 points, 11 rebounds. And I don't know how good Oklahoma is going to be, but some people have projected the Sooners to be an NCAA tournament team. And if so, that's nice for the Zags in the opening week of the season to get a convincing victory over if they are a projected NCAA tournament team.
Matt Norlander
I did watch this game as a, an Oklahoma. I felt compelled and Obligated to watch this for my fellow Oklahomies. Sixteen turnovers from Oklahoma. Not what you want. Especially an OU team that you know, I know, I know locally. The gripe last season was that they really struggled taking care of the basketball. And Gonzaga does a really good job of forcing you into mistakes, capitalizing on those mistakes. They did that in this game. 16 turnovers. EK, as you mentioned, was tremendous. 19 points, 11 rebounds. Gonzaga 18 offensive rebounds to OU's just eight. A really good win. I think for Gonzaga. That was my takeaway. I'm not necessarily hitting the panic button just yet on ou. I think the big takeaway here was a tremendous, dominant win from a Gonzaga team that has a lot of experience, a lot of talented pieces on both ends of the floor. Like, this is a Gonzaga team that I'm gonna be really excited to watch here over the next couple weeks. I mean, they got Creighton on Tuesday, Arizona State, they face Alabama at the end of the month and Maryland and Kentucky here over the next couple weeks. So we talked about tough non conference schedules. Alabama's among the toughest. Gonzaga's got to be up there. Mark Few just loves stacking the board in non conference to make sure that his team is properly tested and excited to see how Gonzaga stacks up here over the next couple weeks.
Gary Parrish
Three more games I want to get to, then we'll look ahead to the next couple of days. We don't normally spend much time on games with zero ranked teams participating, but there were three games featuring unranked teams that I think were compelling for, for different reasons. At least three, probably more, but at least three I wanted to focus on. And I'll start with this one. It was an overtime game. Virginia Tech 107, Providence 101 and Virginia Tech freshman Nicholas Abdallas. Abdullah is a 69 guard from Greece and he got 33 points, six rebounds, four, five assists. I, I don't know if anybody asked him if he feels like he needs to be a part of the Big three conversation after the game, but this is another incredible freshman who, you know, hasn't been talked about as the same amount as debona and Peterson and Boozer, probably because he's from Greece and didn't grow up, you know, winning state championships and playing at Peach Jam. But it's another long guard. Like think of Jaeger Demon at BYU last season, that it's somebody who this young man has been compared to, if only because he's, you know, can play lead guard and he's very tall. So maybe it Just like stops and starts right there. But he was awesome. And that's a. You know, if he's this awesome, then perhaps Virginia Tech can give the ACC another legitimate good team because obviously that league has been lacking some this season in recent seasons. But, you know, early on, Duke's supposed to be great. North Carolina, big win on Friday. People are excited about Louisville. People are excited about NC State, Miami's got some players, and here's Virginia Tech getting a win over a Providence team that you could theoretically end up in the NCAA tournament. I think some people haven't projected that way.
Matt Norlander
Yeah, and I. I think that's absolutely right. Has anyone checked Abdullah's wallpaper by chance? Is there any connection here? As. As Darren Peterson slided him in some way because, my God, he went out and just proved a point. 33 points, six assists. I mean, I'm gonna be honest, he was not on my radar at all. GP and he was tremendous. Like, there were definitely some shades of Jagor dimming just because the size, the way that he moves, and just the command of the offense already as. As a young player, as a freshman for Virginia Tech and, you know, big picture, like, I think it hopefully speaks well to the strength and the depth of the ACC. I think that has been the ACC's Achilles heel over the last couple years. Like, you've been able to rely on Duke. You've mostly been able to rely on North Carolina. I think you could probably rely on Louisville this season and probably moving forward, you know, so long as Pat Kelsey is the coach. But the depth has been a real concern in Virginia Tech, at least earlier this season. They look really good. And Abdulis looks like one of. Maybe we include him in the Big Three. He looks tremendous so far. Statistically, he's got to be right there. Small sample size, but he. He looks really good. Seriously. And, you know, again, we talked about the strength of the freshmen in this class like just another newcomer who has already put a stamp on this young college basketball season. Oh, my gosh. Matt Norlander is in the chat giving us some bear emojis. I don't know what happened, but shout out to Matt Norland. Hello.
Gary Parrish
Perhaps the Chicago Bears have pulled off another. Another miracle. I wouldn't know. I have not bothered to turn it on. Hey, two more games that I think are notable for similar reasons. The reasons being these are two big brands in the sport of college basketball that have found themselves going through hard times recently, and they both got massive victories this weekend. Georgetown 70, Maryland 60, Indiana 100, Marquette 77. Georgetown wins, gets the win over Maryland on Friday. Indiana knocks out Marquette by 23 just before we, we came on here and Tucker Devries finishes with 28 points, five rebounds. So through two games now he's averaging 23 points, five and a half rebounds. Just your thoughts on Georgetown and Indiana. Two fan bases that have really been going through it, getting big results early that suggest maybe, maybe you're on track to getting back to places you used to go.
Matt Norlander
Pretty regular gp I believe they've upgraded from dial up to to fiber in Bloomington. Things are moving at warp speed for the Indiana Hoosiers and a tremendous win honestly. Like for Indiana 23 point win. Indiana was like two and a half, three and a half point favorites depending on where you looked and this game was not particularly close. Tucker Devries fantastic. He's been really good earlier in the season and you know I, I think just overall just the upgrade they've got as, as a head coach like the direction of that program I think is obviously encouraging a really good win for that Indiana team over program Ashaka Smart and Marquette that has been consistent, reliable since he arrived. And yeah like I, I think so long as De Breeze is healthy, played eight games last season. Health has been obviously a big question mark. But they've got a lot of talent, a lot of depth on that Indiana team. I'm very high on the Hoosiers. I hope they can stay healthy. You know, going to Georgetown. Maryland 5 1/2 point favorites in the in that game. Georgetown 10 point win. And you know I think this continues the upward trajectory for Ed Cooley, right? He was 9 and 23 his first year, 18 and 16 last year. Off to a good start this year. Things are looking up right for the Hoyas.
Gary Parrish
I, I mean more often they have looked lately. And like we talked about this just a few weeks ago here on the on College Basketball podcast. Like the whole take a big job and then need four years to get it right. It's not a thing anymore.
Matt Norlander
That's right.
Gary Parrish
Like Pat Kelsey gets the Louisville job and flips it in a year. Mark Pope gets the Kentucky job. Boom immediately. You know that not every first year coach in a power conference at a big brand has been able to do it. But it is possible in ways that it they it didn't used to be possible. So we talked about it a few weeks ago like hey this is year three for Ed and on paper they weren't supposed to be that good necessarily. I know some people believed in them but it wasn't like Georgetown was a consensus preseason top 15 team. And it's like, all right, when is this going to happen? Because it was probably supposed to already happen. And I just imagine if you're Ed Cooley, not that he's sitting around listening to the Island College basketball podcast, but trust me, if we're saying it, you know, his own fans are right and other people as well. And that must be a tough thing to hear. Yo, man, we gave you all the money. We wanted you here badly. What is, are we really about to be just a whatever team in the Big east in year three? Like, it's not the way this was supposed to go. And so we're gonna try to set a record. It's still early, I'll say that again. But he got a big win over a regional and historical rival that can give your fan base something to believe in. And so that was a massive development for, for Ed and his program on Friday night and then for Indiana. I, I don't know. Like, I just. First off, when you hire Darren Derbys, this was always going to be part of it. You're going to get, in theory, another. You're going to get an all American caliber player at least for a year because that's what Tucker has been. He just hadn't been healthy in a while. But when he was healthy as a college basketball player at the mid major level, but he was an all American caliber guy and oh, buddy, he looked, he looked at against Marquette again, 28 points, five rebounds. And you see the look on his face. You see the Indiana fans in the crown. I know I've had my fun with them over the years but like genuinely, I would like for them to have the success that they so badly desire. They care deeply about the thing that we cover. They care more intensely than most about the thing that we cover. So I'll have fun with them sometimes and we might get back to that someday. But genuinely today I was just happy to see them have a, have a good moment because they haven't had too many of those in recent years. And that is too great of a program and too proud of a program to consistently being made, getting made fun of by people like me. They need to be relevant in the sport. Good. And on a Sunday afternoon in the opening week of the season, they, they looked good. And perhaps this can propel them, like I said earlier, back to the place where they used to just expect to go all the time and competing for all the things they used to just expect to compete for all the time. It hasn't been there Consistently lately. And. And maybe Darren Dervies in year one is. Is the guy who gets it back.
Matt Norlander
Yeah, it's still early.
Gary Parrish
Yeah, but it is still early. So let's look ahead to the next couple days, then we'll get out of here on Monday. The best thing on the schedule, number 16, Iowa State against Mississippi State. They're doing that in the Sanford Pentagon In Sioux Falls, S.D. iSU coach T.J. otzeberg used to coach at South Dakota State, so there's an obvious connection there. KB I. I have submitted All America ballots. It did not have Josh Hubbard on it. But when somebody asked me, you look up and could you. Who's not on your team that you could see being on one of your teams by the time we get to March? And my answer was, Josh Hubbard. If Mississippi State's good enough because he'll have numbers, it just comes down to, is that team going to be a top 25ish team? Because that's kind of what you got to be to be in the All America player of the year type conversations. This is a big opportunity to make a statement early with Iowa State on a neutral court.
Matt Norlander
That's right. And we had Josh Hubbard at number 24 in our preseason top 101 players list. I had him a little bit lower. I thought 24 was maybe even a little too aggressive. But so far, like, maybe we had him too low. He is a complete guard. He's a tremendous score. It's a tough test for what I think has a chance to be one of the best defenses in college hoops this season, facing Iowa State. You know, Tamon Lipsey's fantastic, but Lipsey versus Hubbard, I think is going to be a real treat. Iowa State versus Mississippi State. Like, we'll see exactly where Mississippi, Mississippi State lands at the end of the season. But if Hubbard is as productive throughout the season as he has been so far this season, yeah, I think we could look up. And Josh Hubbard is an All American. He's. He's performing at a really high level. And the way that he scores it just consistently just able to probe defenses, to control the pace on offense like, he is exactly who you want running your offense. And that's gonna be a fun game to watch in the Sanford Pentagon this week. This week.
Gary Parrish
Throughout my life, my favorite thing to watch in college basketball is little guards who get buckets. That's not necessarily. It's not necessarily, necessarily the favorite thing I would want running my basketball team, like, if I were in charge of it. But just as a observer, I love little guards who get buckets. And Hubbard's a little guard who gets buckets. He's tremendous. Mississippi State, Iowa State. Best game on the schedule on Monday. On Tuesday I think we've got what is the best day of the season to date. I'll run you through it. Then we'll get KB's thoughts. 6:30 Eastern on Tuesday, Michigan versus Wake Forest. They're doing that in Detroit. Then 7:00 Eastern, it's Duke at army in a cool game to honor Veterans Day. I'll actually be in studio in New York for that. You can watch Duke army on CBS Sports Network, 7 o' clock Eastern on Tuesday. FYI, we also have Delaware, BYU on our air on Tuesday night. So on Tuesday There is only one place to watch both AJ DeBonsa and Cameron Boozer. And that place, CBS Sports Network. Can't wait to be in studio for that. Back to the schedule, 7:30 Eastern. Florida State at Florida, 8:00 Eastern. This is a good one. Kentucky at Louisville, 8:30 Eastern. Texas Tech at Illinois, 10:00 Eastern. Creighton at Gonzaga. KB, that's seven games I just listed that are compelling for various reasons. Tell me what you're most looking forward to.
Matt Norlander
All of it. Yeah, Tuesday should be a real treat. And as Norlander has commented in the chat here, I will just reiterate, Tuesday should be fantastic. You guys are actually gonna plan to go live Tuesday night at some point. Norlander will be at Illinois, as you mentioned. You will be in studio. Love the late night shows. That gives me some shades of March Madness. So Tuesday you guys will be up for the challenge of, of a big day. I, I think the slate, you know, if I'm gonna rank it, probably the top three, it's, it's got to be Kentucky, Louisville. I've got them highlighted bright yellow here. Kentucky actually number one right now at Ken Palm going into Sunday's games. We'll see if that flips over on Monday or into Tuesday. First real big test for both Kentucky and for Louisville early this season. Good chance to see Otega away on the big stage for Kentucky. Excited to watch Mikel Brown Jr. His first real big game for the Cardinals. Should be a really high scoring affair. Two revamped, rejuvenated offensive units. Duke, army on Veterans Day. Pretty excited about that. CBS Sports Network does such a good job covering those big games on big days. And yes, Friday night. GP I was watching you. It was late in Tulsa. Mick Cronin doing sideline. Very excited to watch that. It was a good Game actually the Navy game. So excited to watch that one Tuesday night Duke army. Obviously Coach Gay is a West Point grad so there's that. It's Veterans Day, it's being played at West Point. Should be a great scene there. And then, you know, as far as thrill factor gp, the third one here that I'll highlight, Ken Palm's actually second highest thrill score on Tuesday behind Kentucky Louisville is Texas Tech Illinois, which I think tracks probably for me too. You know that game is being played in champagne. J.T. toppin, tremendous already has a 30 point outing in his lone game so far that he's played in playing against Big Z, that new look front court at Illinois, you know Texas Tech typically stout defense against Illinois and Brad Underwood, that offensive scheme, that system usually pretty high scoring. So kind of strength on strength to looking forward to Texas Tech versus Illinois on Tuesday night as well.
Gary Parrish
So KB previewed it, prompted me, reminded me and he's right. We're gonna go live Tuesday night. I'll be in studio in New York. Norlander will be at Texas Tech Illinois. We should be both concluding our other duties at similar times. And then I'll set up in, you know, my normal hotel room and Norlander will set up and his own little place where he's got and so no Wednesday morning pod. We're gonna go late Tuesday night on Tuesday night. So make sure to join us if you're up after all the action. If you're not subscribed, please go subscribe anywhere you subscribe to podcast and make sure you're following the CBS Sports college basketball YouTube channel. Let's call that a show. KB. I appreciate your time on this Sunday. Now we got a free Sunday night, we can go party. What are you going to party? You gonna party on Sunday night?
Matt Norlander
Probably gonna put up some Christmas stuff, watch some football, maybe turn the fire on. It's kind of cold here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, so yeah, looking forward to doing a whole lot of nothing.
Gary Parrish
It's freezing. I'm freezing. Yeah. So cold here. Yeah. Why is it so cold? I guess November probably a good. You got something to do with it. I guess the month of November probably got something to do with it. But I'm gonna warm up. I'm gonna stay warm tonight. Stay warm tonight and then we'll talk to you again on Tuesday night. Shouts to Devin Downey. Shouts to Chester, S.C. shouts to Terry Teagle. He's a legend. Huck Larnell. Thank you guys once again for watching and listening to the Ion College Basketball Podcast.
