32 and 132 wins to one loss. That music sounds gorgeous. I am Matt Norlander. We are going solo here right after the Miami University Redhawks. After all of the discussion, the attention, the anticipation, the cynicism badly misplaced, look where we are now. 8979 over SMU. And folks, to anyone watching live, thank you for dialing in. A reminder we're going live at the end of every single tournament night from here until we cut down the nets in Indianapolis on April 8th. This is the Goldilocks zone. Let's see that bracket real quick. Josh, throw it up on the screen. You're getting to this. Wednesday night, early Thursday morning. This is the Goldilocks zone. Just right. 64 teams as the tournament should be. Miami is the fourth one in joining Howard, Prairie View A and M. Congrats to the HBCUs for only the second time ever. Both HBCU teams, one in Dayton in the same season. They don't always go to Dayton. Both in the same season. They happen to do that this year and both get it done in Texas. Beat NC State. Not a good, not a good Tuesday, Wednesday for the acc. They've already got two teams out of this thing before we even get to fewer than 64 in the field. I love this. The tournament as it should be, as it should always be. 64 teams and for about 14 and a half or so hours, we get it in its most pristine, flawless form of 64. Four regions, four corners of a bracket. It's a gorgeous thing. Thank you everyone for joining live. That was an awesome two plus hours. Where do we start? I guess I'll go big picture before diving into the game just a little bit. I'm of two minds on the fact that Miami played this game in Dayton. One, I think the nature of the win, and we're talking a double digit win over a team from a power conference in SMU that even with the BJ Edwards unavailability aside, and that's even caused some reaction and understandably so. SMU put out going into selection Sunday that he was expected to be available for the NCAA tournament. And if you want to parse that statement down to he could have been available if they made the Elite Eight and that would have been the NCAA Tournament, that's fine. I think the general expectation is that SMU would play this game with at worst its third best player and arguably its second best player. That didn't happen. I don't know if he was on the floor if that would have really prevented Miami from winning the game. But this team won by double digits. Miami led for the majority of the game. We had a few, we had a few lead changes and that was really, really fun. But I think the nature of the win shows that the committee shouldn't have sent this team to Dayton. It deserved to have its chance and not have to risk it by playing on a Tuesday or Wednesday. But having said That I didn't have a huge issue with them sending him there because of the nature of the non conference strength of schedule, the overall strength of schedule, the lack of quad one wins. Like I get why it happened. We talked about that on Sunday night. But what a trade off. I mean one of a couple of our own at CBS were on hand there. John Breacher has long done a great job for us covering NFL for CBS Sports. And then Eric K, who got screen time tonight is the, is the guy who hired me at CBS. Coming up on, almost 16 years ago, a Miami alumnus went up there with his son. That is so awesome. I love that they, that they got the camera pan to them, that they got to experience that. And as I saw that, that is an all time memory. You know, they didn't want to have to go to Dayton and have to win an extra game just to get to experience the tournament in its earnest form. The true form. Like you playing on that Thursday and that Friday, you get to experience it. You get to go even deeper into the week. You know, I talked to Phil Martelli earlier on Wednesday just to check in, see if he was enjoying it. His son's obviously going to go up against North Carolina and he told me, you know, when you get in the tournament, you always want to play on Friday because it gives you one more day to experience the buildup, the anticipation. That first game is all about the joy, the celebration from selection Sunday until you tip off. And then if you win that first round game, then the tournament really starts. Once you get to 32 teams, then you start looking around like, can we actually make a run in this? So I wanted Miami to get the chance to experience that. It was no guarantee by playing in Dayton, but that Building 85, Redhawk fans, maybe more. The cutaway shots were incredible. That fan base will always have this night. I don't know what awaits against Tennessee. Miami has a real shot with the way that it played and I want to get into the actual gameplay and I'll bring in Josh here before we get out of here as well. So it's not just me. GP is in studio right now for CBS Sports Network. That that's why we couldn't both do this. But we were not going to not talk about this game no matter how it ended. I mean, this is, this is 32 and 1. It's the one final result that if you were a cynic, a misguided cynic, and I know that they'll still be out there, you have, if anyone out there wants to downplay what Miami's done. Yell at a wall. Have fun being the loser in the room. Okay, this show is for winners only. 31 and 1 qualifies you for a national championship with the 68 team field inarguably. Then Miami goes out and puts on a show. Plays without abandon, launches. Hello, 41 threes. Shoot. Makes 16 of them. That's a 39% clip. Only turns the ball over four times. Four times in 40 minutes does that. Despite getting foul trouble with Peter Suterland, Mac player of the year, and its best player, Ian Elmer, the second best player on the roster. Didn't matter. They got it done. They were able to bait SMU into some stuff. SMU kept itself within arm's length for sure, but when you watch the way that they went on that tear in the first half and they were draining threes 1.110 run. Then they pulled off a 151 run in the second half. It was awesome to see. And that fan base always gets this night. That's really, really cool. I think this is a. This is a wonderful night for college basketball. I think it's a. It's. It's an instantly memorable night for the tournament in general. Appreciate Josh throwing up some stuff here for our live audience as well.
Josh
And
Matt Norlander
this. This was the most anticipated first four game ever. I think it's the most exciting first four game ever. It's not the one that ended on a buzzer beater. There have been games that have been tighter over the course of 40 minutes. There have been games gone to multiple overtimes. Famously, BYU came back in epic fashion against Iona more than a decade ago. But. But everything that surrounded this game, you got these psychopaths from Miami in the stands going nuts after the threes. There were a couple spots in this game where it was pulsing through the television. It felt. And there have been some really good first four games over the years, and I have enjoyed that. But I wonder if anyone watching or listening agrees with this. That took in this game over the course of two hours. When Brant Byers was going off at the end of the first half, you saw Scaljack, the point guard with the wrap on his wrist on his offhand. He made some beautiful plays. Ian Elmer, of course, unafraid. Even Omar Atlatson, the big guy coming off the bench. He even. He even hit a big shot at one point in this game. This felt like it had the energy, anxiety, the buzz of a Thursday or Friday tournament game. And we don't typically get that by nature of when the first four happens, it's just before we've got all the games on tv. It's the feed in, it's the play in. It's just the nature of the event. There have been great events. This game actually felt like it was a first round game to me, even though it wasn't. So to Miami fans watching and listening, congratulations. I mean, 32 win season is an incredible accomplishment. You more than belonged. The argument is there that you shouldn't have had to play this game to begin with, but I love the fact that you got it and that you got it and you got this memory and everyone piled into cars, got on buses, made the drive, you know, not even an hour away, and the build up in anticipation and that building was rocking. And Dayton's going to forever host this round. These, you know, these two days, going into the first round proper, as it always should, that was phenomenal. I, I, I didn't know what to expect from this game. I did think Miami was going to win. I thought it was going to have to maybe play on some thin ice here for the majority of the second half, so really not the case. How about ending at 1.34 points per possession on SMU? And that's a new team. Yes, admittedly, down the stretch. Yeah, vomit all over the shoes. No doubt about it. Lost six of its final seven to end the season. The only win was over Syracuse. Team coach isn't even there anymore, so I get that. But we're not making excuses for the victory, folks. Not happening. Not talking about, oh, okay, you beat, you beat an SMU team that had 14 losses and couldn't even finish, you know, top eight in the, in the, in the ACC. Whatever, man. Stop making excuses. It's 32 and one. They know how to win ball games. What we saw this team do on Wednesday night was what they have done 31 other times this season, regardless of the opponents. It was awesome ball, yolo ball and I. And a lot of this is the way they play, but they launched an inordinate amount of three pointers here. How about this? We got some stats for you. Miami has made the most threes in a first four game ever by virtue of this win tonight. And congratulations in doing it and sinking 16 from beyond the arc and, and playing the way they wanted to. They had 10 in the first half. Oh, by the way, just, just awesome stuff. They have the second most points as a program in a game in their history. This is the first win for Miami in the NCAA tournament since. Here comes Wally of course, it's since 1999. Wally Zuri, Bayak and the Redhawks who are also an at large bid into the field. This is the largest margin of victory for Miami in its history in the NCAA tournament, besting a nine point win in 95 in the first round over Arizona when Miami was a 12, besting an eight point win over Utah back in 99 in the second round, second seed Utah. Tremendous stuff, really, really great stuff. And by the way, SMU not winning means SMU among all teams sitting in power conferences right now, second longest drought, if you will, of an NCAA tournament win. Nebraska, by virtue of never having done it, has the longest one. SMU is still sitting since 1988 since it last won an NCAA tournament game. One particular impressive thing about this game to me was I felt like Miami was playing with a little bit of pressure. I think you could see that early on. But it's coming off that loss to UMass in the quarters of the Mac tournament and you could tell they were ready to go. They weren't, they weren't smooth, but they knew what they wanted to do and they got the shots up early and often and it was really impressive. And once they really got into the groove and you could hear that the crowd was behind him, that's when the, that's when the viewing experience from afar really, really increased. You knew SMU was going to try and come out, slow it down. They threw that zone at him, they threw the press at him and they actually had some success there. Big man got in foul trouble. That was, that was definitely a major issue for the Ponies. Without a doubt. I got tolu. He fought, he wound up falling out of the game. He was, he was a problem for him early, but they couldn't take advantage. Bupy Miller did not shoot well. That was a major issue for them, unquestionably. And Miami just tapped into it, tapped into a rhythm, it tapped into a vibration that it has been all season. If anything, it didn't because it didn't find itself in a close game. Maybe that gives them a little bit of an extra boost going into Friday when they've got to now take the trip to philly and play 60 to Tennessee. And you just can't help but wonder how many people in that building tonight at UD arena are going to make the trip and get that done there and how many of them can actually get into the building and try and get, you know, 50 of the vibe that they had there tonight. Because it's going to be, obviously it's it's four teams, it's two sessions, it's the night session. But come on, this is, this is once in a lifetime stuff. I know this chat is humming right now. I really appreciate everything that, that we got going on here. You can look at the stats there in real time. Josh, you can hop in here. The poll right now, we're not going to go too, too long here, but we're already 13 minutes in. I can't believe this pod's already 13 minutes old. Tell the people what the poll question is and then let's hear that. Let's hear the results here because I want to know what people think right now in real time, what their prediction is on how that game's going to go Friday night against Tennessee.
Josh
Yeah, poll what's happening Friday. Right. Very simple, but four options. Tennessee by seven or more, Miami by seven or more, and then either team to win by one to six points. And you'll be shocked to hear that moments after Miami victory, we have 41% leading the votes that Miami wins by by one to six. We're drinking the Kool Aid tonight.
Matt Norlander
I love it. Love that. And we're seeing in the live chat Here, bars open 5:30 tomorrow in Oxford. Green beer day tomorrow, apparently. Okay, they are going to, they are going to party. Just the characters that were, we were seeing in the stands really made this such a fun. What a, what a way. You know, the tournament officially starts on Tuesday. I get that. But for the country, for your bracket pools and all that, it starts in earnest tomorrow. We know that this beautiful, beautiful, beautiful bracket that is now a perfect, pristine 64 teams as God intended it to be. To get this as a lead in is such a jolt, man. It really, really is. And congratulations to Miami on getting this done. I, I will note that in the post game with our Jenny Dell, Travis Steele, like, he had the look on his face and the tone in his voice and he believes it and he damn well should. This isn't like we win it. We're celebrating. They're going to, they're going to enjoy this. It is. Yeah. We got more to do. And we believe we can go deep in this tournament. And I completely believe him when he says that. Why wouldn't you think that? 32 and 1. Come on, man. They made the most threes of any team, any Mac team in the NCAA tournament game, all time. That Buffalo team coached by NATO against Arizona, that was in 2018. Remember NATO? Just like dragging Arizona at the half. That team made 15 at the seed and had the Previous record there. So congrats to Miami. I cannot wait for that game. That is, that's in Philly. That'll be a, that'll be a TBS game. Oh, I'm actually looking at this in real time here. Is this right? You're telling me this is gonna be about a 4:30 tip in the after. I thought this was a night tip. Hold on. This is what I had on the printed bracket. Let me double check this real quick here in real time. Is that indeed gonna be our situation? They're not even going to give them 48 hours to rest up and play this game. I'm just checking real quick on another source, Josh, here in real time Friday. Yeah, look at that. It is. So if you're keeping track at home, this is going to be Catalon Lapis and Evan Washburn on the call. Philly, TBS. You're looking at probably a 4:30 eastern tip on TBS on, on Friday. I thought they'd give them the night. That's right. That's right. It's now coming back to me. UCLA has the 7:25 and Yukon's got the 10:00 clock at night. Interesting. All right. Well, it's a little bit, it's a lesser of a turnaround. I would think they're gonna fly late tonight. They won't get up and fly. They'll be on a plane. I don't know. Hopefully they can take. We're about to go into Thursday officially here. We're three minutes from it. I would think they're gonna hop on a plane by 1:30am hopefully get there, rest up, get acclimated and get ready for that, that game on Friday, which is, it is a challenge for these first four teams. Now we have seen some, in fact we've seen almost all. But I think two years at least one first four team gets at least a win in the round of 64. If not makes a deep run. But it is a quick and tough turnaround. Awesome stuff. Josh, you want to hop in here, give me your thoughts on, on the Redhawks real quick.
Josh
Yeah, you know, I, I was, I was really hope. I, I and I didn't, I wasn't sure if they were going to win. I, I really wasn't sure what to expect in general. But, and you mentioned it a little bit. I was, I was so thrilled that the loss to UMass didn't, didn't seem to affect kind of the swagger that they've been playing with the last few months. Like you said, they, they just came in and where it was clear we're just gonna throw haymakers, we're gonna shoot early and often and we're just gonna see what happens and we're not gonna stop. And that was, that was a blast. It really, I mean, watching so many Miami fans in the building was everything that I was hoping would, would be a, like I thought this game could be a celebration of Miami season even if they lost. And not only did they win, but they did it in ways that they have just been doing it all season with really fun, you know, high tempo basketball, throwing a bunch of threes up there and making a ton of them. I thought it was a blast.
Matt Norlander
It was a blast and I hope everyone that took it in just took it in for the, for what it was, you know, a story we might not see again on a number of fronts. Like the one thing that's kind of just hovering right here the whole time. And if you're listening, I've got my hand behind my head like, please don't tell me this is the last 68 team tournament. Like we don't know if they could make a decision in a month's time and go to 76 for 27 beyond. I, I just, I just cherish this tournament for the size that it is at. And yes, by nature of a team like Miami, ranked on the back end of the 80s or early 90s. In Ken Palm winning a game like this, does it suggest on its face that you could have more teams make the tournament and get wins? Of course. But to me it's about the competitive nature and always has been the competitive nature of getting into the tournament to begin with and having the urgency and relevancy not just of the entire regular season, but particularly in that March push when there is a, a genuine clear line and drop off of teams that have the quality to get in and deserve to get in. Of course we could have one offs for teams when that would happen, but I just wonder as we sit here, did we just experience the last first four and are we going to go to 76? We'll have a different name and yes, the game if we do that, you know, is what it is. I'm not totally resigned to it yet. I still, I still want to believe we've got a chance here and I hope that this is not the last one. If it is, that's one hell of a game and one hell of a memory. And I do hope that everyone was able to just bask in this. Man, this tournament is the best event in sports and we have so much that's going to happen over the next four days that I can't wait to take in. If. If you need a little bit more bracket prep reminder and Josh, we could toss this in the description for everyone. I've got my stats, facts, goodies to know story that did go up. Feel free to dive into that. I'll be back tomorrow night. It's actually tonight. Welcome to Thursday. Welcome to one of the very best days of the year. The thing that's great about the tournament, selection Sunday is one of the best days of the year. Thursday, the first round is one of the best days of the year. Then Friday is one of the best days of the year. Then Saturday and Sunday, amazing days of the year. So it is here. I will, I will read you off here real quick. If anyone's listening, you're caught anywhere. By the way, I'll give you the TV Guide audio so you can get prepped for Thursday. Got a lot of both. Texts, notes, posts, tweets. A lot of you lunatics out there were going fins up in public places, including I had an NBA scout text me. I'm gonna. I won't say who it is. I'm gonna read you the exact text. Parrish, you son of a bitch. Look what you've done. Hold on. Where is this text? When did he send it? He sent it to me today. I gotta find it. Here it is. I was actually on the Stairmaster listening to the podcast. Ha ha ha. I'm embarrassed to say I did do the fins up. Hope all is well. You know who you are. That's just. I had another person say they went into aisle three in a grocery store and did fins up. Sure, why not? Liu, I hope you can keep it within 25 as you get ready for Thursday. Here is the schedule and people are asking me this in the chat. I will, I will address it real quick to Jason Benetti, who is a friend, who is e leet as is every single play by play person that we have on our roster. If you listen to the Tuesday first four with with Brian Anderson, he's obviously battling a throat thing and Benetti is going to get to call the first round of the tournament. I am beyond thrilled for him. He is deserving of this opportunity and the best pinch hitter imaginable. So real ones know just how great Benetti is and he has got decades ahead of him of utter stardom as a play by play guy across multiple sports. So yeah, I, I just. Brian Anderson will be better soon. Be back on the call. He's also an ultimate pro and incredible at his job. But I just love the fact that Benetti on he's done tournament stuff over radio. It's gonna get shot on tv. That's incredible. I love to see that. And that stuff came down earlier today. So he will be. He'll be. Yeah. He'll be with the crew and in the mix there. Which means as we get ready for Thursday, here's your reminder of what the what the schedule looks like as you prepare. Settle in for the day. I think the Thursday first window, I think it's the best one of the eight you've got TCU, Ohio State. That's going to be your first tip. CBS 1215 Eastern. That's Iron Eagle Raftery, Grant Hill, Tracy Wolfton coming to you from Greenville 1240. We go to Oklahoma City. True TV Brandon Godden, Chris Weber, my guy Andy Katz, 130 Benetti in Buffalo with Jim Jackson, Ali Laforce, South Florida, Louisville. Louisville does not have Mikel Brown Jr. For this weekend. We wait and see if that actually winds up being the absence that leads to an upset there with the Bulls, a very, very trendy pick. And then at 150 out of Portland on TBS High Point Wisconsin, Brad Nestler, Wally Zerbriak, Jared Greenberg. Wally, I don't know when you're listening to this but I know you are. I hope you are going to or did get some sleep. He is on cloud nine. Second half of the afternoon slate here out of Greenville. It'll be Sienna versus Duke probably somewhere around 250, 255 true TV out of Oklahoma City, McNeese, Vanderbilt, that'll be God and Weber and Katz. Then you've got around 410 or so. You'll have Michigan State, North Dakota State out of Buffalo with Benetti, Jackson, LaForce and then around 4:30, Arkansas versus Hawaii and Portland with Wally, Brad and Jared getting it done. And then you've got the the night stuff as well. I will be on. We'll have a special guest. I'm not. You can tune in live and you can find out who it is. We'll have a variety, a cast of characters rotating in with all of this and Josh, I appreciate round of applause for Josh. We still got so much to go. He's killing it. He's doing a great job. Appreciate all the hours you're putting in. This is a humming live chat, everyone. I appreciate all the chats here right now. Everyone's staying up. We want to get this done and give you some immediate reactions as much as possible. Before I wrap up, Josh, any, any, any thoughts on your end or just any PSA stuff for our listeners and viewers to know about the pod and anything connected?
Josh
No, I mean, it was. We didn't have a podcast on the schedule today. It felt weird, so I just figured we fired it up again. I mean, by the time we get to Monday, it'll be like seven days in a row of, of podcasts and then we'll do it all again next week. But, but no, I can't wait.
Matt Norlander
We've.
Josh
We've been grinding through the season and this is what this is. This is what we, what it's all about. So I'm pumped. Bracket game in the Description of the YouTube if you're in here right now, and it will also be in the audio description as well. It's also been tweeted to the pod Twitter a couple times today and we'll be there again in the morning. So there's basically no excuse if you're not involved and have a bracket by the time we tip off around noon tomorrow.
Matt Norlander
The chat has asked me to do a Red Hawk noise.
Josh
I was getting tweets about this today. I need.
Matt Norlander
This could be a disaster. Thank you for the reminder. Bracket games. You have until noon on Thursday. Come on and join in. For legal reasons, I'm told we can't promise you the full Blu Ray box set of CSI Miami or anything of the like, or, you know, a cameo appearance on season three of Landman on Paramount. Plus I will deduce some sort of, some prizes. I've got. I've actually got stuff around here that folks might want maybe, I guess, I don't know. I've got random, random college basketball adjacent stuff. But I do want to, I want to give some, some prizes here to our top three or four winners. So please do join the bracket games group. If you're listening and you've done it before it auto added you back in, you just got to make the fix. You're already in there. Anyone new, go and check the description of this episode. No matter how you're taking this episode in audio video wise, there will be a description, a link. You get that done, you have until. You have until third. You have less than 12 hours as we do this now. Do I dare do a. Do I dare try and do a Red Hawk sound on a podcast? I mean, I guess, I mean, it's
Josh
either that or you cold call GP and demand.
Matt Norlander
He's on. He's on set right now. You're talking to a guy who's been talking so much. I I this is gonna be a disaster. But for this podcast, I will do it. Okay. It's, it's similar, I guess to a, I don't know, peacocks. I don't know. It's, it's so high pitched I can't get it there.
Josh
I Godspeed.
Matt Norlander
Hold on. I'm gonna mute my mic first and see how this sounds. Hold on. I'm muting my. I cannot do this. I do not have the vocal capacity
Josh
that that looks like it hurt. That looks like it hurt through without the, the sound. It looks like it hurts.
Matt Norlander
If you go and find the hawk noise. Cuz I did. Dude, I got no chance at this. I got I it would be better if I tried and whistled. Yeah, that's, that's, I just can't do that. I'm, I'm sorry. That, that, that can't be done. I, I appreciate. There you go.
Josh
There you go.
Matt Norlander
For the.
Josh
I think that's admirable, an admirable effort.
Matt Norlander
