Collars and Co. Hey everybody, before we.
Gary Parrish
Get going, wanted to give you a quick notice. Shortly after we finished taping, the Big east put out a release. Duncan Powell was suspended an additional two games on top of the automatic one game suspension that was triggered as a result of his role in Saturday's melee in Providence. So that part of it missing from the conversation, which is why I'm recording this for the top of the show. And now let's get to Texas Tech's big time win in Tucson on Saturday.
Matt Norlander
There I am. Gary Parish. Welcome back CBS Sports. I own college basketball podcast where we sometimes discuss camel fighting, dodo birds and leaky black. Per usual, Matt Norlander is here with me. If you're watching live on YouTube, Honor Brandon Davies Smash that like button. If you haven't yet subscribed to the Island College Basketball podcast, please also do that wherever you subscribe to podcasts like Apple and Spotify. Let's get into it. I want to start in the Big 12, where the number one team in the AP poll resides. At least for now. That number one team is Arizona.
Gary Parrish
Up until Monday as we take. Yes.
Matt Norlander
Yeah, they got, they got one more, they got one more sleep to enjoy this and then it's going away. Probably because they lost to Kansas last Monday, but definitely because after losing to Kansas on Monday, they lost to Texas Tech at home on Saturday. Final score, Red Raiders 78, Wildcat 75 in overtime. J.T. toppin. He went big, big. 31 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, including a big one in OT to Donovan Atwell, 22 steals, a block. A big victory. Norlander. We'll celebrate Texas Tech in a minute, I promise. First, let's talk Arizona. The Wildcats were undefeated this time last week. Seven days later, they're a two loss team and the star freshman co opit is injured. I guess seasons, I guess seasons can flip on you pretty fast, can't they?
Gary Parrish
I guess, but I don't think, I think that much less of Arizona right now. This is kind of a life in the Big 12 situation. And in my estimation, Arizona's two losses didn't come until we flipped to February and both of them came against teams that are more than capable of making the Final Four. So my, my image of Arizona really doesn't take much of a knock. Arizona's placement at the top of the sport takes a little bit of a tumble. Arizona no longer has claim in the here and now to the number one overall seed. That's certainly, you know, newsworthy. We might not even be in this position if not for an oddly poor lack of awareness by Jaden Bradley, who lost Donovan Atwell on that three Atwell hit to help get the game to overtime. Arizona would go on Kartenkov at two foul shots. That even got us to the bonus session. And how about Atwell coming through and doing what he needed to do? We'll get to Tech in just a second. But Pete, not being on the floor, did it have an impact on the outcome? Maybe. Quite possibly. Sure. I, I just thought the Texas Tech matched Arizona's energy. So that Arizona staff, I knew they were going to take on a loss or two, maybe even three down the stretch given the strength of the league. That's not to say anything of what they don't believe in their guys. They believe in their guys, plenty. But this could wind up being just a blip. And I don't reduce Arizona's chances of winning a national championship or making a Final Four run at all by virtue of playing close and losing on the road to a really good Kansas team and then playing close and losing at home in overtime to a Texas Tech team. That, by the way, making a habit of this, I'll remind viewers and listeners, a year ago, Texas Tech was the only team to stroll into Houston. That's the Houston Cougars that lost a possession away from winning a national title. They got it done there a year ago in addition to already beating Houston this year. So yeah, that's where I stand on, on Arizona. What about you?
Matt Norlander
Trivia time?
Gary Parrish
If you're going to ask me the last time a number one team lost back to back games, I cannot even approach giving it to you. Is that the trivia time?
Matt Norlander
Because you, because you think it's too easy or because you, you are too dumb to know such a thing?
Gary Parrish
Too dumb to know such a thing. I know that. I know that the most recent team to start with a big undefeated record and lose back to back games is Nebraska, but I, I don't know the last time a team hit number one with back to back losses. Did it even happen this season? Am I that dumb?
Matt Norlander
No, you're not. I mean, I, I'm not here to speak on how dumb you you are or aren't. I don't feel like that's my, I don't feel like that's my place. I just took like a harassment course a few weeks ago, like the annual harassment course. So now I know everything you're allowed to say and do and everything you're not allowed to say and do. And I don't know that I'm allowed to comment on your intelligence or lack thereof when it comes to identifying number one teams that have lost twice in the same week.
Gary Parrish
That harassment chorus did not cover the purview of this podcast. They could not build a long enough tutorial video to cover everything that's touched on this podcast.
Matt Norlander
I completed my harassment training maybe, maybe 24 minutes before the deadline and I got my little certificate. They emailed it to me and I took a picture of it and I sent it to Stove and I said, man, I just completed my harassment course. I think we need to calm down a little bit. We've been laughing a little too hard. Turns out you're not supposed to laugh as hard with your co workers. So I don't.
Gary Parrish
I'm an idiot. What's the last number one team to lose back to back?
Matt Norlander
Baylor 2022. Okay, the Bears started 15 0. They were ranked number one in the country, lost to Texas Tech and then immediately in the same week lost to Oklahoma State. So it's kind of similar. Number one team in the country, undefeated, deep in the season, not as deep as as Arizona, but pretty deep into the season. And then boom, take your first loss, Boom, take your second loss. I though like you, I'm not that current concerned about Arizona. Although anytime people identify a possible problem and then you start losing games and then that thing is, is pretty obviously an issue, folks will start to point at it. And obviously I'm talking about the three point shooting, the lack of three point shooting. As you know, they don't even take them.
Gary Parrish
I thought it was a factor in.
Matt Norlander
The game Parish, I mean they were four of 16 from three. They were outscored at the three point line by I believe 21 points. I mean the reason Nate Oates emphasizes the three point line is because to not do so in his mind and in a lot of people's mind in the year 2026 is to just create a math problem for yourself. And Arizona's got a math problem. And when you lose a front court five star freshman and you have trouble punishing people from the three point line or more accurately even keeping up with the people from the three point line, then, then that math problem can start to present itself. They only attempt 26.4% of their field goal attempts from the three point line. Without context. I know that means nothing to most, but just Understand it ranks 363rd in the country. There's only 365. They make 35.3% of their three point attempts. That ranks 100th in the country. So they barely take them and they're totally average at making them. To be clear, still one of the 10 best offenses in the country. Still a team that's only got two losses on February 15th. They're really good. But I did think it was an issue there. And I have had other coaches in that league and other coaches familiar with that program consistently say this to me throughout the season. Eventually that will be a problem. It won't prevent them from being great. But could it be the thing that prevents them from winning at all? Yes, it could be the thing that prevents them from winning at all.
Gary Parrish
It could. And also it's obviously opponent dependent. So if you're watching the show, you see the stat, broadcast stat sheet here. And Texas Tech was able to not turn it over on the road, which is significant. Only eight giveaways now, Arizona only had seven. But Texas Tech matched Arizona's physicality on both ends of the boards. I thought that was vital and critical in the game. They came in ready to play. So Arizona, you get them on your home floor, you get any team on your home floor, you're going to expect a win. That's a top 10 venue in college basketball. I give credit to Texas Tech. Let's transition there because you see here Christian andersen, you know, 19 points, eight assists, six rebounds. He play well. J.T. toppin reaffirmed his status as a first team All American and maybe for good for the rest of the season in this kind of spot. 31 points, 13 rebounds. When you watch the game, J.T. toppin, you could, you could put, you could throw multiple defenders on him in a phone booth and he'd find a way to put the ball in the bucket. Man, he is, he is so comfortable maneuvering with force, grace, touch, escapability on the low block. He's the best, he's the best player at doing it in college basketball. And I just love that, that southpaw lefty baby hook that he's got. It's one of the most reliable shots in all of college basketball. I, it's hard to be more, I mean this GP Texas Tech is a six loss team right now and it is fairly squarely on the four line right now. Even with having the three best wins, nobody has three better wins in the sport in aggregate than Texas Tech. Win over projected one seed Duke at the Garden. Win over projected one seed Arizona on Arizona's turf. And then the, the win that you've got over Houston and Lubbock. Projected two seed, but the best two seed at that at this stage. Still, when you add up the losses and it's, it's still fair to have Texas Tech on the floor. Four line because the three line really is that good when you have teams that are sitting there with two or three losses at this stage. But Grant McCaslin's team, when you watch this game as it played out, they had outright belief. It felt like it was 24 going against 20,000 in that building and they refused to die. Extremely impressive. And even more so after getting to the game to overtime, I thought there was a very good moment with Grant McCaslin and, and Christian Anderson where Anderson's his shot to win. It was a bad one, bad possession. He wanted him to pocket, pass it to top it in the post. Why wouldn't you obviously in that. In that. In that position on that possession, that's what you want him to do. But I thought you saw a lot of communication, trust, tense moment on the road. You're trying to rip off what is your best win of the season. And this is. And this is. This is better than Duke at the Garden. This is better than Houston on your home floor. This is at Arizona. And it's building in that environment. And they rallied. They steadied themselves. And this, remember, keep in mind, in the context of that ending, they flipped a what it was 6457 Arizona lead into a 66, 64 Texas tech advantage before it then got to overtime. They get it done. Toppin and Anderson, right now, they're the only duo in college basketball averaging at least 19 points a game this season. Toppins numbers as of today, 2021.9 points, 11 flat rebounds. He's trying to become the first Big 12 player to average at least 20 and 10 since trivia time. Last Big 12 player to average at least twenty and ten.
Matt Norlander
Yeah. Last Big 1212 player to average at least 20and10 is going to be Hunter Dickinson.
Guest or Contributor
Huh?
Matt Norlander
Why wouldn't it be Hunter Dickinson?
Gary Parrish
Because it wasn't.
Matt Norlander
Well, then he. Well, did he. Well, then that was money poorly spent.
Gary Parrish
I'm gonna check real quick here. Hold on. I do not. Well, that's up. That's up for you to decide. Hold on here. I do not think it was Hunter Dickinson. In fact, I got the staff from our. From our research crew, so it was not. It was not Hunter Dickinson. Okay, so if. If it's not 20 and 10. It's 21 and 10. So Dickinson did it. Number one draft pick.
Matt Norlander
Number one draft pick. Is it. I'm going. I'm running through it. Number one draft pick out of the Big 12.
Gary Parrish
Yep.
Matt Norlander
It's not Andrew Wiggins.
Gary Parrish
One more. Come on.
Matt Norlander
I can't think of a number played.
Gary Parrish
In the past 16, 17 years.
Matt Norlander
Beasley went 2. So it's not Beasley. Durant went to. So it's not Durant.
Gary Parrish
Nope.
Matt Norlander
I don't know. Maybe I'm just as dumb as you are.
Gary Parrish
League is no longer in the Big 12. I mean, school is no longer in the Big 12.
Matt Norlander
School is no longer. I'm just blanking. This is like a RJ Barrett moment for me. Give it to me.
Gary Parrish
Blake Griffin.
Matt Norlander
Oh, of course. Blake Griffin, 2000.
Gary Parrish
Happens to the best of us. Happens to the best of us.
Matt Norlander
I remember him well.
Gary Parrish
Apparently not. Christian Anderson, averaging 1-7-19.1, 7.7 dimes and right now they are pacing 2B. How about this one? Teammates to average at least 19 a game in the Power Conference. At the Power Conference level the past 20 years, Andrew Rousey and Marcus Howard did it for 2017-18. Marquette. Bet you didn't remember Andrew Rousey, RJ Barrett and Zion and Christian Anderson. JT Toppin only power conference players the past two decades to average at least 19 a game. They've got a really good chance of doing it. You saw it on the screen earlier. If you were watching you, if you're listening, you didn't see it. This is Texas Tech's third win ever over the top ranked team in the country. They've now gotten one under Grant McCaslin, they got one a few years back under Mark Adams and they got one just a few years before that under Chris Beard. So congrats to the Red Raiders on a seed line bump of a win that will pay off on Selection Sunday. And I I am of the belief that they have a very healthy chance at making a Final Four run. Not saying I guarantee it. Not putting them among the eight most likely teams to do it. Toppin, Anderson, McCathlin. You give me that trio. You give me the right kind of draw. Absolutely. They are certainly capable of doing it. I thought it was the most notable win of the weekend. Of course, and I believe it was the only instance of the entire weekend were a a worse ranked team beat a better ranked team because there were no unranks that beat ranks over the weekend. I believe that's accurate.
Matt Norlander
I will tell you one thing I noticed after Valentine's Day was done was that there just wasn't much movement in the top 25 and one because it was not like a wild Saturday or Sunday. I did move Texas Tech up based on the quality of that win. They're now 16th in the top 25 and one. So that would, you know, measure out to a four seed if I were trying to put the bracket together this morning. So I've got them in that range. On topping, I ran you through what he had in the game now on the season. 21.9 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.6 blocks, 1.3 steals. He was the Big 12 Player of the year last season. Every number I just gave you is up from last season now. Field goal percentage down, three point percentage down. But just points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals per game. All of that is up and he's now moved into top three of the Kinpom Player of the Year standings. I think now it's Cameron Boozer, Joshua Jefferson and J.T. toppin. One, two, three, in that order. So he's, he's terrific. I think sometimes we get caught up in, you know, talking about the freshman, talking about the projected top five picks. He's neither one of those things, but awesome college basketball player. Just an awesome college basketball player who, like you said, tends to, tends to get where he wants to get on the court and make play after play after play after play. He was the best player on the court yesterday, both in regulation and overtime, and that is the biggest reason why Texas Tech was able to go win on the road. Let's move on to but let's stay in the Big 12, where Kansas and Iowa State looked like a great matchup on paper. On the court, not so much. Darren Peterson did play, but not particularly well. Iowa State, Cruz we'll spend some time on that next first, let's get our first word from our partners this time.
Gary Parrish
Of year right now, next few months, basketball season, my favorite time of the year. And as great as it is to take in the games on tv, the sport is even better in person. Score Iowa State 74, Kansas 56 at Hilton Cyclones bounced back from their loss at TCU with a dominant win over Darren Peterson and the Jayhawks. Most talented player on the court. DP Most productive player in the game. M M Milan Momcilovich. He took 13 shots, made seven of them, finished with 18 points, three rebounds, two steals and assist in 34 minutes. So Kansas, does this mean anything to you? Is now 10 and 4 when Darren Peterson plays 9 and 2 when he.
Gary Parrish
Doesn'T, you know it, that doesn't. Honestly, at this point I take even less from the Kansas loss than I do from the Arizona loss. Kansas had not dropped a game in more than a month. It went on the road against an Iowa State team that was rightfully pissed off after the way that it blew the game against tcu. It responded well in TJ Otzelberger's program. It is a straight line, never too high, never too low. It's going to get picked off here and there. Understandable. But it can bounce back and it's really reflective of that coaching staff. So real quick on the Kansas end. I put almost no stock into it. 19 and 16. Peterson didn't have a good game. Good scout for Iowa State itself. Even worn going in. You know, the flu, all that conditioning. We'll see how he plays well in this game. 10 points, didn't shoot well from the field. 23 minutes, 3 turnovers. One of his worst two games of his of his short college season so far. But that's all I got on ku. I tee it right back to you on the Jayhawks before we dive into what this meant for Iowa State.
Matt Norlander
Yeah, I don't think it means anything. That record does not make me go. You know what, maybe they're better without Darren Peterson. The ceiling is so clearly higher with Darren Peterson. He had a bad game. He's been in and out of the lineup. They're still trying to get used to playing with them. He's still trying to get comfortable playing with his teammates. Hopefully the in and out of the lineup stuff is over, as always. We'll see. But I don't, I. Here's what Saturday represented to me more than anything else. Darren Peterson is, you know, still a teenager and Hilton Coliseum is amazing. Iowa State is awesome. And every once in a while you're going to run into, you're going to run into, you know exactly what happened to them. I know Bill was frustrated afterwards. Like, we just, we've got to get a lot better if we're going to try to play in these types of games. But don't forget, just earlier in the week they had beat the undefeated number one team in America. So I, I still like you. What happened Saturday didn't really change my opinion in any meaningful way about Kansas. I think I dropped him a couple of spots in the top 25 and 1, but that's still a team. Whatever I thought and said they could do last week, I still think they can, they can do those things. Momcilovich. Yeah. Okay. Momcilovich again, just awesome. He's a 6 foot 8 junior, 3 year starter at Iowa State. He's now averaging 18.4 points, 54 shooting from the field, 51.5% shooting from 3 on 7 and a half attempts per game. Wally Zerbiak, who used to make shots back in the day, has just decided to put the label on him. He calls him the best shooter in college basketball. That's debatable, I guess, but he is leading the sport in three point field goal percentage? Jaden Booth at Sanford is making more per game, but only because he's shooting more per game. Here's a question for you. How many qualified players are shooting above 50% from 3 point range this season? Just one. Milan Momcilovic. How many qualified players are launching at least seven and a half threes per game and making at least 44 and a half percent of them? 2. Milan Momcilovic and Donovan Atwell at Texas Tech. So both from the Big 12. But Momcilovic is a significantly better percentage from beyond the arc. He's the leading scorer for a top 10 team. He could be an All American right now. We spent a lot of time on Joshua Jefferson, but if somebody threw out an All American team that had Momcilovich on it right now, I would not object at all. Leading score, awesome shooter on awesome team.
Gary Parrish
He's.
Matt Norlander
Those are the boxes you need to check to get the accolades you'd like to get.
Gary Parrish
Yeah, and he's like a six eight, stretchy big. Like not a lot of dudes have come through college basketball over the past forever at his size. And if he. It's gonna be a big. Honestly, that's a big ass to see if he can get to the end of the season. North of 50%, but whatever. Let's say it's north of 47 and a half percent at six eight, you know, 225. Really cool story emanating out of Ames there because yes, between him, Jefferson, Lipsy is still a very valuable senior point guard in a season just overrun with really good ones. He's another one on the list. And then you know, like Killian Torre as a very, very versatile defender who is a premier breakout candidate for a season from now. Blake Buchanan played well in this game, mom too much at 18. But Lipsey, Jefferson, Blake Buchanan and then actually Jamari and Bateman who came off the bench and had some really impactful minutes and buckets in the second half was also significant there as well. Iowa State went 8 of 14 from 3 at one point in this game. They led by as many as 24. Only six turnovers. It was. It was all the more impressive because I think Iowa State started the game one for one of ten from the field. So they did not come out of the gate roaring by any means. Kansas had an opportunity to pounce. Couldn't get it done. Wasn't a high scoring game. And then yeah, Bateman with three triples off the bench, I thought was. Was key there. And congrats to Iowa State. Four wins in a row at home against Kansas. That hasn't happened since the back half of the 1980s. So Cyclones fans are loving that. They're feeling good. They've yet to lose at home. They get arguably their biggest test and a day from now. But we'll talk about that at the end of the show.
Matt Norlander
Well, I mean we don't. We could touch on it here just because like, how cool is it to be an Iowa State fan right now? First off, your team's awesome. So it, like, starts there, but in a span of three days, you get Darren Peterson and Kansas coming into your building and Kingston Flemings in Houston. I mean, that's better than an NBA schedule.
Gary Parrish
Awesome stuff. Yes.
Matt Norlander
I mean, just terrific. So, yeah, can't wait to just like every Monday I'll settle into my hotel room and go, okay, Big Monday. Don't let me down. I'll turn. Hey, don't let me. I'll turn to wrestling if I. I'll turn to Monday Night Raw if I have to. But Big Monday, I'd rather spend it with you. Don't let me down. And we got a great one. Yes. We'll get to that later on in the show. Up next for Kansas, if you're interested in at Oklahoma State on Wednesday. So that's Bill Self back at his alma mater. One more result slash headline from the Big 12 before we move on. Final score, BYU 90, Colorado 86 in overtime. Rob Wright got a career high 39. Good for him. But it's one of those wins that comes with a loss because Richie Saunders, he left very early and earlier today was diagnosed with a torn acl. He is done for the season. I'm hesitant to ever say anybody's done for their career. I live.
Gary Parrish
I know I live in the same.
Matt Norlander
I live in the same state as Trinidad Chambliss.
Gary Parrish
Okay. So to Saunders, his own telling of it in his IG post, he said it's over.
Matt Norlander
Yeah.
Gary Parrish
Hey, there's still time for a lawyer to get involved. So next season.
Matt Norlander
Hey, Richie, with all due respect, Nate Oats will decide whether you're done playing college basketball or not. Okay? That's going to be. That's going to be up to Nate. Okay? Nate will just. Nate will get in touch with you and you guys can figure. He'll help you figure out if you're done with college basketball. But. But. So we'll see. As always, we'll see. But I mean, just crushing. I mean, just.
Gary Parrish
Yes.
Matt Norlander
Like, yes. I mean, I'm like, you're. You're having an incredible season. You're playing with a future. I mean, who knows, at the worst, top three pick, you've got a chance to maybe have the best season in your school's history. All this stuff is on the table and realistic, and then, boom, it's just over. You'll never get it back. There ain't like, according to him, in all seriousness, jokes aside, it's done. He'll never play college basketball again. That. That is heartbreaking. Just absolutely heartbreak.
Gary Parrish
So there's a lot going on here. Yeah. Tremendously heartbreaking and we're coincidence of weird coincidences. Byu. Okay. So Saunders gets hurt early in the game and because, and in part because he's hurt. Oh by the way, like BYU needed to survive at home in overtime to get past Colorado and DeBonts actually had a shot to win it. It was an airball as time expired. They get it done. They win by four and kind of move past the shock of losing Saunders who's such an immense presence on that team. So there's even the context of that like that's, that's eyebrow raising. They got the win but you should beat Colorado in regulation and by double digits on that home floor. So there's, there's that they honor Jimmer for debt and retire his number and his jersey at this game. Which just as like half joking aside, it is the school rule. But it is insane that you made JIMMER Fredette wait 15 years to have his number retired. It's the school rule, so do what you want to do.
Matt Norlander
Man, they got so many rules at that place.
Gary Parrish
I went on local BYU TV a week ago and, and poked fun and called out. I actually, I playfully called out former athletic director Tom Holmo and I said this is all Tom's fault. This is all Tom's doing. He's not even there anymore to take the hits. I'm blaming Tom Holmo. It's absurd to me that Jim referred that had to wait 15 years and then. But, but here's the connective tissue on this. This is this team. The hopes connected to it are the greatest since Jim or Fredette's senior year. And what happened that season. They lost one of their most important players to a different scenario.
Matt Norlander
Tell them why.
Gary Parrish
Tell them why scenario. And effectively cost BYU a chance at making a Final four run. Now we have, we have history rhyming with itself. It is spooky. I know BYU fans watching and listening to this shouts to the thems are probably plenty distraught over this because it's like, you've got to be kidding me. You know, 15 years ago it's because of premarital sex and now it's because of a torn ACL to Richie Saunders too. But, but of all the games for it to happen, he goes down early on the night they're honoring Jimmer. Just weird, weird stuff there. I feel so terrible for Richie Saunders. This significantly affects BYU's outlook moving forward. Our, our poll here is what do you think BYU will end up seed wise now that it was lost to Anders for the season most common response is a five or a six seed and then that's 47. So almost half the people watching live. We've got a healthy live audience number right now and then 7 or 8 seat is at 38. No one basically thinks that they've got a chance at a four or better. I would agree with that. And not many of you think it'll be a nine or worse which hopefully that's the case. But I remind you BYU lacks high end wins to this point in the season. Richie Saunders played was 125, 128 games. 128 games in his career. Local Kid, Riverton, Utah I thought he was pacing toward being a first round pick, just a gamer, big shot taker, big shot maker, averaging 18 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, shooting close to his career average from beyond the arc. You know he's just a tick under 39 from three this for his career this season he's at 38 and he was one part of a very important trinity for BYU with DeBonta and Wright and it was a great sign that Wright just popped off for 39. But now Saunders is out of the equation and what can be like if you tell me right now that BYU is going to play in an Elite eight game this season then I'm going to tell you that AJ DeBonsa is going to up it's going to up it another notch or two or three and put on a player of the year type rally from now until the end of March. Because if you don't watch BYU on a game by game basis you don't quite appreciate how much Saunders does to keep that offensive offense fluid. How he takes pressure off of DebonSA to allow DebonS to do that. How he opens up the lanes for for right to be a setup guy even for other guys on the team. This the Arizona loss is the biggest headline but to me it's A1A to what? This news popped an hour before we went on. We went live here. Saunders being out for the season is one B headline for me coming out of the weekend. This is borderline devastating for byu. Very interested to see how the Cougars were rally with this because this is not a deep team at all. It is not. And they've got Arizona next on the road, then home to Iowa State. They've still got to go play at West Virginia, at Cincinnati, home to Texas Tech. This could get bumpy. Keep an eye on the Cougars over the next month because the entire calculus and outlook of their season just changed dramatically.
Matt Norlander
Yeah, Stinks. Stinks at Arizona next and then Iowa State at home. So lose a key player. Congrats. Now you get to play two of the best teams, two legitimate national championship contenders in back to back games. But of course, Arizona could be shorthanded for that as well. We'll wait to hear an update on the. The co op situation. Let's move on up. Next weekend, whip around. We're going to start it with the scuffle in the Big East. There was a fracas in the Big East. Was it a scuffle or a fracas?
Gary Parrish
Fracas. What is. What is fracas?
Matt Norlander
Fracas is the. Fracas is the southern pronunciation.
Gary Parrish
Stop.
Matt Norlander
That's the way we say it down here.
Gary Parrish
You really say it. Fracas.
Matt Norlander
I think. I mean, I grew up watching Memphis Wrestling Rock as far. I think you'd. I think you'd have a lot of that. Okay, fine. Let's just. Okay, you know what?
Sponsor Voice
Then?
Matt Norlander
Let's just. Let's call it.
Gary Parrish
Let's call it over your fracas.
Matt Norlander
Is that what that. Let's just call it a scuffle. Let's just call it a scuffle.
Gary Parrish
I called it the near donnybrook. All right? Let's just. It was a near donnybrook. Okay, Donnie Brook, you needed a. A few more fisticuffs flying to be an outright donnybrook. I called it a near Donny Brook. That's all.
Matt Norlander
Okay? It's a. It's a. It bordered on a donny Brook. So let's take. Let's. Let's get a word from our partners, and then let's come back and let's. Let's watch a little scuffle. Let's watch a little scuffle.

Tansy everywhere in skincare lately, but I actually discovered it through one of my favorite clean brands. Primally pure. I didn't believe in natural deodorant until I tried their best selling Blue Tansy deodorant. This one is actually clean and it actually works. Blue Tansy is this really calming antioxidant that helps soothe irritation and inflammation, especially if your skin tends to react easily in areas like underarms. And what I love is that the same ingredient runs through their entire soothing collection. From facial mists when you need a little pigment. Me up to their soothing spirulina face mask packed with raw honey, kaolin clay and wild crafted botanicals. I've honestly never experienced anything like it. So if your skin has been feeling a little overwhelmed lately, return to calm with primally pure. Their Blue Tansy line is a beautiful place to start.
Matt Norlander
It's time for the weekend whip around. Let's start in the Big east where we got a basket brawl. Final score, St. John 79, Providence 69. I guess. I don't know. Six players were ejected after what has been described as a scuffle. Josh, I believe we have it. If so, let's watch it together before we criticize Duncan Powell for being a weirdo. Storm Hopkins running the floor. Hopkins. Oh, he is waxed. Oh, hard foul. Hopkins springs up and it is on. On the baseline. PO Just took a swing. Oh, it's not good. Only thing we were missing is Isaiah Stewart. We just needed an Isaiah Stewart to take this to the next level. Flying everywhere.
Gary Parrish
Yeah, this didn't quite have it on the. And this is Hornets unravel. We might get some ejections here.
Matt Norlander
That was Hornets Pistons, I believe.
Gary Parrish
Yeah. Yeah, this was a really, really hard.
Matt Norlander
All right, so let's, let's just start at the beginning. For people who don't know, that's Bryce Hopkins, former Providence player back at Providence. You know, the fans treated him the way you would expect the FR fans.
Gary Parrish
To treat him first game back, by the way.
Matt Norlander
Yeah, that's, that's. That what you're looking at there, that's unacceptable. Like, that's, that's. That's cheap. That's not funny. That's not cool. That's not tough. That's cheap. That's dangerous. Obviously he was removed from the game. I think it triggers an automatic suspension. If I, if I were Kim English, I'd add more onto it. I don't want that guy representing my program doing stuff like that.
Gary Parrish
Yeah. And if you didn't know who Duncan Powell was going into the weekend, it's understandable. He's a four year player who's been to four different schools. Started NCA&T, Sacramento State, Georgia Tech. Now at Providence and a weird scene just all around. I had this game up on the, on the multi view and, and basically I only had it up because I wanted to see if, if Providence could keep it close against Hopkins. Like, you've got Providence. A bad team, had a bad year. Kim English Seat is scorching hot. Can you play for some pride? And the next thing I know, yeah, I thought, I thought this was like one or two swings away from really getting extremely ugly. You know, fight every so often in college basketball is obviously going to get, it's going to create a, a little bit of a burst of response. I get all that. We're not looking for it, but we don't need to be too precious over it. But at the same time, the foul is so egregiously terrible. Like he, I understand when the play starts he's trying to make a play on the ball, but it's almost as if he changed his mind in midair and decided now this is, this is over and I'm taking out Bryce. And then he's like popping off to the crowd. Providence fans are responding to it. St. John's guys had people off the bench. Rick Patino getting in the middle of the. I was like, rick, get the hell out of there. What do you like? I saw him as yellow at first. I'm like, I get that. I'm like, what the hell is Rick Patino doing on the floor right now? Thankfully, he, he got out of there unscathed. And it was not the, the fight wasn't as bad as it could have been. I have a very random stat for you, by the way. I asked our research team for the last time that there was a high. There was a high major game, particularly because I feel like once every two or three years at the low major level, we, we sometimes get just like a brutal fight some way or the other and you get a bunch of people tossed out. And this kind of thing can be hard to, to track. But I wanted to know the last time a high major game had at least six. This game had seven, at least six player ejections. That was not the Kansas, Kansas State, Silvio de Sousa because that happened with like a second to go. So that like doesn't even really count. It was the end of the game. I wanted to know in game, big fight, mass ejections, Alabama, Minnesota in 2017.
Matt Norlander
When they played with only four dudes.
Gary Parrish
Correct. I want. Was it four? Was it maybe three on five? The point is the two most recent instances of mass ejections in the middle of a game at the high major level have both randomly involved a Patino coaching on the sideline. Just Richard Patina was coaching Minnesota the year that happened. Very, very bizarre. And that was our. Our colleague Avery Johnson was on the other side of that game, by the way, against, against Rich Patino and the Golden Gophers there. Obviously there's no place for this. There was another.
Matt Norlander
There was another one that was bad, too, right?
Gary Parrish
There was another cheap shot later in the game and another ejection. So there was seven in total. Providence's whole program is a disaster at the moment. I didn't appreciate Rick Patino afterward trying to tell the media what they could and couldn't ask his players. It's a major incident. Like, I get he wants to protect him, but like grown men, they can speak to what happened on the floor, but whatever, he knew what he was. He knew what he was, what was awaiting them when they walked in the press conference. St. John's gets the win. And at the time, I want to say Johnny's were down one at the time of the mass ejections. Then they rally, they win, they get it done on the road and they avenge their loss. By the way, St. John's has not lost since it fell at home to Providence on January 3rd. So that makes what, 10 wins in a row at this point? GP but yeah, ugly scene. Stupid. Like, more than that. Just like a stupid scene. Like there was no reason for this whatsoever. And we wait to see whether there will be further punishment coming down for Mr. Powell, either at the hand of Kim English, Steve Napolillo, the athletic director of Providence, or the league office. I would think we're going to get word on that by Monday afternoon, I believe.
Matt Norlander
Yeah, I'm not gonna let one player serve as a reflection of a program or one unfortunate chant serve as a reflection of a fan base. I don't think that's fair. But I am comfortable saying that Saturday, for a variety of reasons, was just not a good reflection of Providence basketball. Just. It just. It was a bad Saturday for Providence basketball. And, yeah, there's no place for some of the things that happened and some of the things that were allegedly said, you know, we'd be better off with. Without those things. So, yeah, we'll wait for the big. We'll wait for the Big east office and, and see how they handle it. Let's move on.
Gary Parrish
Well, hold on. Just. Yeah, we'll move on, but I just want to at least acknowledge we don't have to dive into it, just random, that UConn only beat Georgetown by four at home late on Valentine's night. 79.75. Almost vomited away the game. Didn't. As a result, Alex Caravan was involved in his 116th win for the. For the Huskies. He's now the winningest men's player in the history of the program, so congrats to him. But I thought. I thought Yukon was going to win this game by 15 plus. So pesky Georgetown. Good fight there. Huskies 24. 2 and remain, as far as I'm concerned, in GP is at agreement with me as a projected 1 seed going into the game at home against Grayton later this week.
Matt Norlander
I think that was the classic human nature game. Your Yukon. Georgetown stinks. It's Valentine's Day night. You probably want to do other things, but you got to play a basketball game. All right, let's go do that. That's.
Gary Parrish
What. What exactly are you insinuating there?
Matt Norlander
I'm insinuating that solo ball. Solo ball. Probably.
Gary Parrish
Watch it. Careful, Icarus. Careful, Icarus.
Matt Norlander
I'm just saying. I. I spent time with my wife on Saturday night as opposed to triple screen college basketball because it felt like the proper.
Gary Parrish
On Valentine's Day, I went to Keem Dermish.
Matt Norlander
Okay. Right.
Gary Parrish
My wife was asleep when I got home last night. And that's totally fine.
Matt Norlander
My. My wife was asleep 90 seconds after we got home last night. I'm talking about. I didn't even get the movie turned on.
Gary Parrish
Gosh, none of us.
Matt Norlander
I. This is my. This is my Valentine's night. We had an amazing dinner with friends. Ubered. Uber to dinner. Ubered home. Great night. Perfect night. I said, hey, you want to watch a movie? Yeah, let's watch a movie. I turn a movie on, walk in the other room, come back, she's out. Out, bro. I said, all right, I guess I'm gonna go work on the top 25.
Sponsor Voice
And one.
Gary Parrish
There we go.
Matt Norlander
So how did. How did I end my Valentine's Day night? Oh, buddy. By updating the top 25 in one.
Gary Parrish
Gosh, that's so hot.
Matt Norlander
That's. It is hot. It's the last thing I did before I went to bed on Valentine's night.
Gary Parrish
You know what it feels like to slide a team from number seven up to number five?
Matt Norlander
Oh, now you're gonna be the one who gets us in trouble. Now it's going to be you. For years, they've been saying it was going to be me. It's starting to sound like it's going to be you. Anyway, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, Yukon. That's what I chalked that up to.
Gary Parrish
Yukon too horny to want to play basketball.
Matt Norlander
Yukon was too horny to want to play basketball. Solo ball had his mind other things I'm certain.
Gary Parrish
What's the next league? The Big Ten, please.
Matt Norlander
I think it should be the Big Ten. Let's go to the Big Ten.
Gary Parrish
Michigan.
Matt Norlander
You're not gonna believe what they did. Added another 30 point win over a likely NCAA tournament team. These guys, these guys. Dusty's like hey guys, you know what we're playing today? And they're like ucla coach. He's like yeah, of course ucla. But more than that, ucla. Ucla. Probably going to go to the NCAA tournament. So you know what we're going to do to them, right? Yeah, coach. What are we going to do to them? Beat them by 30. That's what we do. These dudes beat everybody by 30. They got a 40 point win over Gonzaga, 40 point win over San Diego State, 30 point win over Auburn, 30 point win over UCLA. They're now on a 10 game winning streak. They're nine and oh in quadrant one. 24, one overall, 14 and one in the big ten. The only one lost power conference team in the country. Number one in the net. Ken Palm, Evan Mia, Bart Torvic dot com, every other dot com, every dot com I know of that I look at. They're running it right now as I wrote, the top 25 and 1 this morning. Not only are they going to be number one in the AP poll for the first time this season, I don't know if people realize this because they've been dominating the sport. They've never been number one in the AP poll.
Gary Parrish
Not one week a nugget my friend.
Matt Norlander
I did not realize it.
Gary Parrish
If you had genuinely asked me over under whatever how many times I think I would have given you two weeks. They have not gotten to number one in the AP.
Matt Norlander
They have never been number one.
Gary Parrish
I.
Matt Norlander
They have been number one in the top 25 and one for chunks of the season and for the past six days. But when they moved to number one in the AP poll on Monday it will be for the first time this season. I did not realize it until I looked it up. And so what I wrote was they won't just move to number one for the first time this season. They should be the unanimous number one. There's no sensible alternative.
Gary Parrish
That's right.
Matt Norlander
You can't defend putting a one next to anybody else's name right now in this moment other than the Michigan Wolverines. That's what I believe at least 10.
Gary Parrish
Wins by 30 plus points this season. That is the second most ever by. By a Big Ten program ever. 91. 92. Indiana had 11. 19. 90. 91. Ohio State had 11. Michigan now has 10 to this point. Credit to the Wolverines for doing it again. Goodwin for Michigan. Can't say the same for Michigan State from Friday night. Now all transparency because I had to work all day Saturday. That's when we took the boys out. So did a little night skiing and thank goodness that my little guy is what, buddy? I'm on a podcast right now. What's up? I'll be done in like 30 minutes. You got to let daddy do his thing. Okay. Got to close the door. Yeah. Realize I'm literally live on a podcast right now. You got to close the door and go in the den, kiddo. Thank you. Sorry, gp.
Matt Norlander
Hey, man, I got kids and they have done the exact same thing many times.
Gary Parrish
He's now 7. I want to say he did that to me on HQ when he was like 3. I can see my wife and other. You know, I did it and see my wife walking our dog with my older son outside. So he's by himself downstairs. That's. But he did like when he was out maybe three, he. He popped on HQ Live fit with me. Like those moments we've seen go viral. He did that. So it had been a minute. Apologies, folks. Watching live. Hey, nothing better than kids. We did take the kids out on Friday and so I did watch some of this driving back. Had it on the phone. And it just. Credit to Wisconsin mentioned. Texas Tech has the best trio of wins in the country. Wisconsin is number two. Wisconsin has win at Illinois, win at Michigan. Michigan's only loss of the season. And then not even. Not even close. I mean, they roasted Sparty on Friday night. Badgers are 187 so far this season. Nick Boyd 29 points, John Blackwell 24. And watch out for Wisconsin. They just. I know they've gotten seven losses here. I don't know what seed they're going to end up with, but they. They helped shake up the race for second place in the Big Ten all the more by not even giving Michigan State any hope. So I know that's all the way back on Friday night, but wanted to inject that as well.
Matt Norlander
So. So I did watch Friday night. That is the night we sat in front of the television. I once again fell in love with the Olympics. Oh, man, I'm all in on this Olympic stuff now. I. I feel like. Like an Olympics expert at this Point. I'm all in. I like. I like. I'm not even joking tonight. You know what I'm looking forward to doing? Like, watching tape Delayed Olympics.
Gary Parrish
You weren't up with me watching Shiffrin at 7:30am Eastern. I don't. I don't need to know nothing Dialed in, buddy.
Matt Norlander
I don't need to know nothing.
Gary Parrish
I won't spoil it for you. Even though the headline's been on our website for, like, six hours now.
Matt Norlander
I intentionally try not to look because I just would rather. But, like, I watch Quad God. I. I already knew what was happening with Quad God. I already knew it. But that was fascinating to me. Like, the moment was just too big for him. And he acknowledged that. He was like, I just could not handle this. This is crazy.
Gary Parrish
Yeah.
Matt Norlander
Anyway, so sitting down watching Michigan State, Wisconsin and the Olympics, we had a party Friday night. I swear to God, this is the oddest basketball thing my wife has ever said to me during a game. We're just sitting there and it's quiet, and we're just sort of. We got everything going. And she's. She. She added, nowhere she goes. I really like Jeremy Fierce. And I said, what. What do you even like?
Gary Parrish
I.
Matt Norlander
The initial shock was, how do you even know who Jeremy Fierce is? This is crazy to me. And she. She's like. I said, what do you mean? She's like, I like watching him play, and I know he's been struggling, but, like, I think is. I think he seems like he's got a good heart. And I was like, where's. Like, I don't even know. Like, where is. I feel like you're pranking. I was like, I felt like I was getting pranked. I had no idea she was carrying around opinions about Jeremy Fear. So, anyway, we settled into that. Had fun watching that. Then, of course, you get the Michigan game this weekend. Purdue goes into Iowa 78, 57 wins. That one. The Boilermakers have turned their thing around. People are starting to ask big questions about them. They've now won four in a row, including three on the road. Then Illinois knocks out Indiana at home on Sunday afternoon. Kylan Boswell made his return. I'm just popping through some Big Ten stuff right now. Boswell made his return. Stjakovic was out for, I believe, the second straight game. He's got a high ankle sprain. That's problematic. But Boswell was back, made an impact pretty early, and Illinois really had no problems with Indiana. So the updated Big Ten standings, Michigan, of course, alone a top 14. One conference record. Illinois now alone in second 12 and three conference record. Then you've got Purdue in Nebraska tied for third at 11 and three and then Michigan State and Wisconsin tied for fifth at 10 and four. Now check this out. Tuesday in the Big Ten is going to be awesome. We might end up starting Wednesday morning right there. Because everything I'm about to say is not necessarily the expected outcome, but it's all totally reasonable outcomes. If Purdue beats Michigan on Tuesday and Michigan State beats UCLA and Wisconsin beats Ohio State and Nebraska beats Iowa, all of those things are possible. Then the top six teams in the Big Ten will be within two games of each other and we'll have a fun conference race going forward. Clearly Michigan is still the favorite. And if Michigan's able to get past Purdue, then you know that's a possible loss that they just removed from consideration. But if, if Purdue is able to get Michigan on Tuesday and the other games go the way I just explained them, we've got a Titan conference race and maybe the most interesting we got at the power conference level.
Gary Parrish
We have a chance at that. See how the results break over the next few days to thicken it all the more. I thought it was important for Purdue to steady itself. It gets the sweep of Iowa by the way. Now four game winning streak after it's, it's three game slide there. So that was notable. By the way, Purdue was shot 37 or better in 12 consecutive games from beyond the ark. Keep that in mind as we move forward. But for me just the two losses in the Big Ten that I thought were significant. One, Iowa. It's not two and five in quad one. It was a no show 13 game losing streak against ranked opponents. I always had to beat a rank opponent this season and that dates back to the McCaffrey era as well. So we'll see. Like they just starts. Didn't get off to a good start and then he wound up having like 19 in the game. No one else had double figures. Outclassed like up and down the whole way through. I, I was not as good as I thought it would be at the start of the season. I had him in the top 30. I'm gonna be off on that. I think Iowa makes the tournament, but it's just not, it's not. I thought I expected more in this spot. And we'll see how it plays out the rest of the season. And then Ohio State had it against Virginia up double digits. That game was in Nashville. It came out earlier in the day on Saturday. You know, John Mobley junior's out Indefinitely with. With a hand injury. It's their second leading scorer. He's their best three point threat. That's very significant for Ohio State which now feels very vulnerable. Not even making the NCAA tournament like flash into that game. Up 11 on Virginia. A Virginia team that has now won 11 of its past 12 is a firm foresee at this point. Would have been just massive. I don't think Ohio State has defeated a quad one opponent yet either.
Matt Norlander
Oh, and 8018 in quad one.
Gary Parrish
Oh, I. A couple. There are a couple teams and we can get to more of them here in other leagues in just a second. But there are a couple teams that really had hinge point type of games this season or excuse me, this weekend. And. And in a variety of different ways let them slip through. Iowa wasn't even competitive. And then Ohio State just could not close out against Virginia. There might be some ruing. We are four weeks from selection Sunday right now and if you made me pick right now, I don't think the Buckeyes get there. I think they needed this win over Virginia. A not you get a non conference option opportunity middle of February. It's a good team, Quad one opponent and you let it slip. I think they're going to regret that. And. And it portends bad things for the Buckeyes.
Matt Norlander
Yeah. This is like North Carolina from last season, right? Like yo, man, when are you going to get one of these things that everybody says you need? They're now 0 and 8 in quadrant one. They're top 40 in the net. Top 40 at Kinpom. That puts you in at large computer range. But eventually you got to beat somebody. I mean, remind me, is Ohio State's athletic director on the selection committee?
Gary Parrish
I don't think so.
Matt Norlander
Okay, then eventually you're gonna have to beat somebody.
Gary Parrish
Not believe Ross Bjork is on the committee. Yeah.
Matt Norlander
Then eventually you're gonna have to beat somebody. All right, North Carolina, they had other things going on last season. I'm joking. I'm joking.
Gary Parrish
We just.
Matt Norlander
We're just joking. But eventually you're gonna have to beat somebody. Three more quadrant one opportunities for the Buckeyes left in the regular season. Based on current projections. It's at Michigan State next Sunday. Good luck. At Iowa on February 25th. Maybe that's one you can get. Because like if Iowa gets to the NCAA tournament. I'm with you. I'm not going to rule it out. But if they do, buddy, it is only because of the brilliance of Ben McCollum and the brilliance of Ben. It starts because there ain't much else going on there. And then the last one would be against Purdue at home two weeks from today. Fill up your building and go try to knock out Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman. Wren, you. You might need to get two of those to feel like you're moving in the right direction. Definitely got to get one. If we're sitting here talking about, after all that's done, they're 0 and 11 in quadrant one, then, yeah, you better go win the Big Ten tournament. And if you're 0 and 11 in quadrant 1, you ain't winning. You ain't winning the Big Ten tournament. Let's move on to the ACC. Final score Duke 67, Clemson 54. Rough week for Clemson. A week ago at this time, 101 in the ACC tied atop the conference standings with Duke. They haven't won a conference regular season championship at Clemson since 1990, and they were at least theoretically in position to do it this time last week. So much so that what I would say on television or wherever, something like, duke's gonna win the acc. Like, I just sort of said that, like, sort of just off the cuff the other day and it got clipped and it was on the Internet floating around and it was like, duke's gonna win the acc. And then so we're trying to figure out who's going to finish second. And some Clemson members like, yo, man, we're tied for first. Show some respect. Well, Duke is going to win the acc. I stand by that. Clemson took two losses last week at home to Virginia Tech. Lost at Duke this weekend. So you go from 10 and one in the league to 10, three in the league, and now looking up at Duke behind him by two games and you don't get them back at Little John. So like I said, Duke is going to win the acc.
Gary Parrish
Yep. That's basically all that result means to me. What else in the ACC race you want to touch on? Because I got. I want to see what you got.
Matt Norlander
Well, Louisville 82, 71, whatever. But Michael Brown Jr. We should point out 29 points for him, got 45 earlier in the week against NC State. So past two games, 37 points, six rebounds, four assists. Those are the averages. While making, I think it was 14 of 21 three pointers he attempted in those two games. So 67% from three on ten and a half attempts per game over the past two contests. Just add his week to the other list of awesome weeks from college freshmen this season.
Gary Parrish
Miami won at NC State. That's the most consequential result of the weekend in the ACC. Keynes went on an 8 nothing run in the final minute to flip this game. Miami won despite shooting 3 of 17 on the road. That is hard. That is genuinely hard to do. To shoot that poorly in conference against a projected NCAA tournament team and still get the win. Get the win. Miami did. 77, 76. North Carolina State has back to back games at Louisville, home against Miami Will Wade's team is 18 and eight. Meantime Jay Lucas 20 and five squad home against Virginia Tech next and at Virginia next weekend. So more work to do but four and three in quad one. Fourth place in the ACC right now. This team is shooting the best of any team in league play right now, Miami. So just keep an eye. They can, they can make it in year one to the big dance under, under Lucas. And very few people, yours truly included, thought that would be the case when, when he got that job just going into year one. I thought it might take a year or two. But got a healthy chance or no, they're no luck by means. They got a lot of work to do still. But 20 and 5 and take they would take. This is their best start in league play and I think a decade at this point. So credit to her, to Miami for getting it done. But yeah, that's a melt by NC State. You can't be losing, you can't be dropping, you can't be going on eight. You know, on the wrong end of that to close out at home against. Not a surefire tournament team. Problematic.
Matt Norlander
Miami might not be a lock, but if the tournament started today, they'd be in it right now. The ACC standings, Duke alone at the top 12 and one league record. Virginia one game back in the loss column. Two games back in the win column at 10 and two. Clemson third at 10 and three. Miami fourth at nine and three. North Carolina State fifth at nine and four. Then it's Texas. I mean, no, I'm sorry. Then it's Louisville and North Carolina tied for 6 at 8 and 4. SMU alone in 8 at 6 and 6. And according to CBS Sports bracketology, as of Sunday morning, those are the eight teams from the ACC projected to make the NCAA tournament. Let's move on to the SEC final score. Florida 92, Kentucky 83. Game went about the way I think most people thought it would go. Xavion Lee got 22 points. Big week for him last week. Two wins, total of 40 points. I might owe that young man an apology. Early in the season he struggled and that was among the reasons Florida was struggling. He's gotten Better. The front court is the front court. Florida clearly looks like maybe I shouldn't say clearly but I think if we were taking a poll, Florida looks like the best team in the sec.
Gary Parrish
Yes, Arkansas's got something to say about that. We can get that in just a second here. But Florida never trailed in this game. Weirdly enough, I didn't realize this Kentucky had won six in a row in Gainesville. So the only other time that Florida suffered a longer home losing streak to any team ever was a seven game losing streak against Kentucky that was from the late 50s into the 60s. Kind of wild but they they ended there 12th time this season the Gators have dropped 90 plus points. That's impressive for a team that can't shoot from beyond the arc. Broadly speaking first place in the SEC now 10 and 2. Orban Clovjar career high ties at five three pointers in this one between him and Fland. Like Fland was able to go 20 plus for the fourth time this season. A a good development for Florida. Now I Florida is just not going to turn into and you asked me this I want to say on Friday. Do I consider Florida a team that can win a national championship? I said the three point stuff is the thing that just prevents me from getting there because there's still 346 in the country. Not shooting 30 from beyond the arc. We'll see if that winds up being something that that bites him in a big spot. Be it in the Sweet 16 Elite Eight Final Four. Heck national title game. We'll see. I think it is a big thing to overcome but you get this kind of stuff from Fland Clovdar shooting the way that he did. You know the front line is obviously a beast. Kentucky miss 15 shots at the rim in this game. When you have a the best front court in college basketball like you induce that through your physicality and then just your presence, I think you spook a a couple shots that would be mixing the misses so mighty impressive by Florida. It's not hammerlock on them but they've got the lead there. Arkansas did win 8875 over Auburn to keep pace one game behind in the SEC race as a result. Well done out of Arkansas. Didn't mess around. Darius Acuff Jr. Is we just have an overload of point guards. Like I want to say he's one of the three best point guards in the sport and he may well be but there are so many good ones. He was awesome. Again he's now averaging 21.2 points, 6.3 assists and him. Billy Richmond had himself a nice game as well. But real quick on Auburn. It's lost four in a row. It has the number one strength of schedule in the country, by the way. Toughest schedule. Auburn hasn't. No one's played a tougher schedule than Auburn.
Matt Norlander
Hey, hey, hey. Thanks, pops. Thanks, Pops. I appreciate the job, but you didn't have to give me this schedule.
Gary Parrish
It's 14 and 11 still, I think projected into the field and I, I think that would be justifiable at this point. But yeah, you're getting high up there in the total. How about the fact that Keyshawn hall, fourth leading score in the sec, Auburn's most important player. He's been suspended, Stephen Pearl said. Contract, conduct detrimental. Like he's sitting down. I don't know when we're bringing him back. He's not playing in this game. This is a massive game on the road for your NCAA tournament resume. And so I think it's a pretty grown up to say I don't know what Keyshawn hall did or didn't do. I'm just telling you there are definitely coaches in the sport where they're careening toward bubble status. They're not already there and they've got a big game on the road and they would not sit their best player if even if that player had been hacking up behind the scenes because, you know, making the tournament means everything. So credit Stephen Pearl. Don't know what hall did. Maybe it's something completely out of bounds. It's something enough where he's sitting them and he could be sitting up for another game or two or three. So at least wanted to invoke that as well. That was, that was a surprising thing that came across the timeline. But it, it is true nonetheless and we see if Auburn can survive without him because this, this, I mean this decision may well affect Auburn's chances of making the NCAA tournament.
Matt Norlander
So Elsewhere in the SEC, speaking of four game losing streaks, Vanderbilt 82A&M 69 Buckyball has gone from 7 and 1 in the league to 7 and 5 in the league. I think when they were 7 and 1 and alone atop the SEC standings despite being unranked, we said, listen, this is largely schedule induced. We'll see where it goes from here. Where it has gone from there is four straight losses to in order, Alabama, Florida, Missouri and Vanderbilt still projected to be in the NCAA tournament. But CBS Sports bracketology as of Sunday morning has them all the way down as an 11 seed. Just like Missouri, by the way, who lost at home to Texas. 8568 three game losing streak for those tigers snapped. They now have four four quadrant two losses. That's a lot. But they are projected in the tournament right now according to CBS Sports bracketology. If you're interested, the SEC would lead all conferences in bids with the number being 11. It would be Florida, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky. Those are the top six in the league standings right now. In addition to those six, Texas, Missouri, A M, Georgia and Auburn in the field according to CBS Sports bracketology. But Missouri and A M now both projected as 11 seats.
Gary Parrish
I mean Georgia's careening out of control. I mean Georgia lost at Oklahoma. Popcorn machine lit on fire in the concourse of Norman. Georgia is lighting its tournament resume on fire. So you said 11 projected right now. That's number's not going to stay between Georgia A Mizzou, Texas, Auburn. At least one of those teams will play itself out of the field if not two. I still think nine's on the table for the sec. The other teams just aren't going to get there. South Carolina, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, lsu. Those aren't going to get there. It will not be 11. There's just no way. I don't want to say there's no way. I I find it highly unlikely the SEC winds up with with 11 in the tournament. There's too many teams that are too wobbly near the cut line.
Matt Norlander
Before we start looking ahead. There are three ranked teams from outside of the traditional power structure. All three played this weekend. Let's acknowledge them. It's number 12, Gonzaga. Number 18St. Louis number 23, Miami University. All three won this weekend. Gonzaga at Santa Clara 94.86. The Zags are now 25 2. St. Louis 1 at Loyola Chicago 86.59. The Billikens are now 24 and 1. Miami University beat Ohio 90 74. The Redhawks are now 25. And oh, what stands out to you.
Gary Parrish
From those Gonzaga got a good push at Santa Clara. That was a big one for the WCC race at Santa Clara one. Then we'd have a real situation where Gonzaga might not win the WCC regular season championship in its final season of the league. But they get it done. And Gonzaga still has to go and wrap the regular season in two weeks against St. Mary's St. Louis. No surprise there. They continue their tour there. We'll talk more on the Billikens later this week on the pod. Miami at 25 0. Just love to see this story continuing. Miami is now I love these nuggets our research team gives us longest win streak with at least 70 points scored in every game of the win streak in the past 30 years. Miami's only one of three schools to get there. They did it 98, 99. Duke did it, lost in title game. Gonzaga did it 2019. From the end of 2019 through 2021, they did it 35 consecutive wins of at least 70 points. Deck and saga team also lost in the title game. Redhawks to the title game. Who's to say? By the way, Travis Steele said on college game day on Saturday morning, credit to Reese Davis for playfully prodding on this. If they get to selection Sunday undefeated, he will wear a Speedo on national television. Now I'm here to further clarify that Travis Steele can't wear a speedo and then wear some shorts or some joggers over it. No, no, no. You get there, you get Travis Speedo, white thighs and all showing. Let's lean into it. Make college basketball that much more fun. They still got to do it. They start. It's still a long shot statistically right now to do it. But he did say if they get there and honestly, why the hell Nat I actually had someone in the coaching industry who's friends with Travis. I sent out that tweet when it happened. Like he said it and I sent it out. I don't know like three, four minutes later. And this coach texts me. He goes hey, this just woke up a couple group chats. When did he say this? Meaning like a couple group chats with Travis Steele and some other coaches. Hey, did he actually say this? Because it's really alarming to the rest of us out there. So he's on the hook. I would love to see it happen. That would be genuinely amazing if not only we had an undefeated mid major team going into the tournament. Just an awesome thing for college basketball if that happened and then Miami's got a really good swim team and then they convert that into just a great visual and some great content one way or the other. So steel, be a man of your word. You do it. We want to see it.
Matt Norlander
Absolutely. Who knows where the story is going to end? I. I've just decided to enjoy it while it's ongoing. They're 25 0. Strength of record is 25 wins above bubble 35. They started 127 at Ken Palm. They're now up to 84th. So they've improved 43 spots. Yeah, they're supposed to win most of these games they play. They have won four different times this season. As an underdog, college basketball is only undefeated team right now. CBS Sports bracketology has them on a as an 11 seed, so they don't have a lot of wiggle room. They just don't. They've got to avoid these landmines that are out there. Everything left on the regular season schedule. Quad three, quad four up next, quad three game at UMass Kim Pom. Oh, huge. Like really Kim Pop's got it.
Gary Parrish
I'm taking a trip out to Indiana. If I was not getting on a plane, I'd be driving up to Amherst Tuesday night. That is a big one.
Matt Norlander
Yes, Kim Palm has it. Miami 84, UMass 80, but it's just 8480. It's a losable quadrant three game which might say something about which might highlight some of the stuff some of the skeptics have liked to thrown out, but I'm not getting caught up in that. 25. 0. Strength of record is 25. Next up, UMass Quad 3 game. They would be wise to avoid avoid losing it. Orlando. The Associated Press Top 25 Poll will update Monday. Like it like it like it does. And barring a massive surprise mission is Michigan is expected to to move to number one. The Wolverine should be the number one unanimous team in the in the AP poll on Monday. If I were predicting it, here's the way I would have it. First, just let me run you through the top 10 of the top 25 and 1. This is what the top 10 of the top 25and1 will be on Monday morning. Number one, Michigan. Number two UConn. Number three Duke. Number four, Arizona. Number five, Houston. Number six, Iowa State. Number seven Purdue. Number eight, Nebraska. Number nine, Kansas. Number 10, Illinois. If I were predicting the AP poll, I would have it slightly different than that. Here's what I think it's going to be at least the top five and then I'll turn it over to you. Michigan at number one, followed by number two, Houston. Number three, Duke.
Gary Parrish
Yes.
Matt Norlander
Number four, Arizona and number five, Yukon. That would be my prediction. It looks like you don't agree.
Gary Parrish
So we agree Michigan will be number one. There's no argument. They need to be unanimous. Number one. Number two, Houston beat Utah and Kansas State this past week. Houston will jump up to two. Duke will be number three. Be Pitt beat Clemson. So that means Michigan and Duke, which are going to play next Saturday. It will not be a 1 versus 2. It will be a 1 versus 3. That's our expectation. I'll be genuinely surprised if Duke jumps Houston for number two. I have Yukon at number four because UConn didn't lose. I think Arizona losing two will drop them from one to five. UConn beat Butler and then narrowly beat Georgetown at home. So I've got the Huskies at 4, Arizona at 5, and then I'll give you my 6 to 10 and you see where you.
Matt Norlander
Well, let me stop you here for just a second because I, I, I agree it's going to be Michigan, Houston, Duke, and then I agree it could be Arizona, UConn in either order. I went Arizona ahead of UConn at least in the AP poll because I assume some AP voters are going to look at that and say, hey, I know that team beat that team, so I'm going to keep that team ahead of that team. If the otherwise, if otherwise, the, the resumes are pretty similar. I'm gonna keep the team that won the game when they played each other in front of that other team. I'm not saying you should do that.
Gary Parrish
Yeah, we're just trying to, we're just trying to predict a people voter behavior.
Matt Norlander
Okay, go ahead. So anyway, we think that the first five teams that come off the board are going to be Michigan, Houston, Duke, Arizona, UConn in some order. We, that, yeah.
Gary Parrish
And then six through 10, I think actually gets a little tricky here. I will say I'm interested to see how much we disagree on this. So this is just my, these are my dart throws. I will say Iowa State at 6. Now it lost to TCU, but by virtue of beating Kansas, I'll say it's 6. It was already obviously, you know, sitting there, top 10 as is going into the week. Gonzaga didn't lose, so I have The Zags at 7. Purdue didn't lose this past week. It beat Nebraska and then it beat Iowa. The Nebraska win was an OT. So I've got Purdue at 8. I am going to, I'm trying to speak this into existence because Florida has been a top 10 team for weeks now. I'm going to say Florida jumps from 14 to nine after beating Georgia and then handling Kentucky. And then I will say Kansas with the win over Arizona and yes, the definitive loss to Iowa State. I'll say Kansas City sticks as a top 10 team and that means I've got Nebraska, Illinois, which did lose a game in this past week, and Michigan State. Obviously I've got those three big Big Ten teams falling out. So Iowa State, Gonzaga, Purdue, Florida, Kansas. How much do we disagree?
Matt Norlander
A lot. Obviously reasonable.
Gary Parrish
But we are saying this is my top 10. I'm trying to predict what it will be. I just want to be clear about that.
Matt Norlander
That's right. I've already told you what my top 10 would be. Right now it's Michigan, Yukon, Duke, Arizona, Houston, Iowa State, Purdue, Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois and that order. My prediction for the AP poll would be this. 1, Michigan 2 Houston, 3. Duke 4, Arizona 5. Yukon. We agree, 6. Iowa State Cyclones were fifth last week, lose to TCU, blast Kansas. I say they punish them with one spot drop down to six. I got Purdue jumping all the way. And this might be where I'm a little off, but I've got Purdue jumping from 12 up to number 7, or rather 13 in last week's AP poll up to number 7 in this week's AP poll. They're on a four game winning streak. Beat Nebraska and Iowa in road games this week at number eight. I got Nebraska, lost to Purdue this week, beat Northwestern, was seventh last week. I got them dropping to eighth at number nine. I would have Illinois was eighth last week, now ninth after losing to Wisconsin and then beating Indiana on Sunday. And then at 10, I would have Kansas. They were ninth last week, down to 10th. Now beat Arizona at home, lost at Iowa State. So I'd get Michigan State out of the top 10, get Purdue in there, move Nebraska, Illinois, Kansas, all one spot down each. Again, that wouldn't match the order of the top 25 and 1. But if you do that, the top 10 of the AP poll and the top 10 of the top 25 and 1 would be the same 10 teams, just in slightly different orders.
Gary Parrish
All right, let's look ahead to Monday and Tuesday. We've got even more tremendous basketball ahead over the next 48 hours. What do the folks need to know out for Monday night.
Matt Norlander
So on Monday, two games featuring ranked teams. Syracuse at Duke, 7 Eastern. So another shot to see Cameron Boozer, the leading candidate to be national player of the year. And then at 9 Eastern, it's a great one. Houston at Iowa State. It's. Depending on what the polls look like, it could be a top five matchup. It's definitely going to be a top 10 matchup inside Hilton Coliseum. So just like I told you last Sunday, I'm a fly to New York City. I'm have a party. I'm a party in my hotel room party for one. I. I really do have parties for one.
Gary Parrish
I know you love your parties for one.
Matt Norlander
I prefer them that way.
Gary Parrish
I hear you.
Matt Norlander
I prefer them that way.
Gary Parrish
So.
Matt Norlander
Can't wait for that. Then on Tuesday, remember we got the I Own College basketball podcast on CBS Sports Network show. That's going to be at 1:00 Eastern. And then Tuesday night I'll be in studio with Brent Stover, Wally Zerbiak, a Mecca Okafor. We've got a fresh episode, Inside college basketball at 7:30pm Eastern. Then 8:00 clock Eastern. GW at VCU, 10:00 clock Eastern Grand Canyon at San Diego State. Then we'll recap the night with another 30 minute episode of Inside College Basketball. Just as soon as everything gets done elsewhere around the sport. On Tuesday night, Michigan at Purdue, North Carolina at NC State, Miami University at UMass, Louisville at SMU. UCLA at Michigan State, Nebraska at Iowa, TCU at UCF, Baylor at Kansas State. Should be a scene.
Gary Parrish
You know what? We're on bag watch. I hear you.
Matt Norlander
We're on bag watch. We're on bag watch. Tuesday night.
Gary Parrish
The names off the jerseys. You see that drum tank?
Matt Norlander
Yeah.
Gary Parrish
Names on the back.
Matt Norlander
Oh, and let the players do the scouting report and suddenly the team knows what it's doing. That's not great.
Gary Parrish
That would be a. That would be.
Sponsor Voice
Like.
Matt Norlander
It'd be like my kid. It'd be like my kids are out there raising hell. And as soon as the show was over, I was like, you know what? You know what? The next show on, on Tuesday. You guys can do it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You guys do it. And then they plan the show and execute it and it's better. I'd be like, bar is low.
Gary Parrish
Honestly.
Matt Norlander
I'd be like, what in. What is going on? No, that was the interesting headlines out of KSU's win this, lost this weekend. I'm sorry, I take back I did, I misspoke.
Gary Parrish
It was not a win, honestly, playing at Houston. It was the wrong team, wrong time. That's. Yeah.
Matt Norlander
There ain't nothing I'd have rather done less this weekend than go to Houston if I were Kansas State. All right, so no names on the back of the jerseys. Players handle the scouting report. And the team kind of looked confident, so I saw some Kansas State fans chirping about that. Hold up. We are now letting the players do the scouting report and we look better. So that's, that's probably one I might have kept myself. But whatever.
Gary Parrish
I will be on site in West Lafayette at Mackie, Michigan at Purdue. Big time environment. Very much looking forward to it. So we'll see what Michigan can bring. Michigan's got a hell of a week at Purdue, then plays against Duke in D.C. on Saturday. Just a one, two banger you hope you can get out of it. One and one regardless of when the one win comes and, and if the loss comes there. So that's, that's, that's clearly the headline of Tuesday. But that is a stack. Tuesday night SMU at home bubble spot hosting Louisville, Nebraska to Iowa, Iowa and a big spot at home against the Cornhuskers. Ohio State at home and a big spot against Wisconsin. North Carolina State at home in a big spot against North Carolina. No Caleb Wilson, Henry Visar didn't even play in the home win over Pit over the weekend. We'll see if he's available for that game as well. Georgia's tournament resume is just frittering away. It's on the road against Kentucky. UCF took a bad loss over the weekend. It tries to stop the bleeding at home against tcu, which is also a vintage bubble team there. So one after another after another, Tuesday night is just stacked beyond belief. We will be raring and ready to go on Wednesday morning with Tuesday shows coming next. But Wednesday, I'll, I'll be coming to you live from West Lafayette in the hotel room that morning. We will have plenty to get to and and will obviously lead on the outcome of what happens at Mackie Arena.
Matt Norlander
