When she was 7 years old, Corrie Loeffler fell in love with the Scripps National Spelling Bee when her brother competed in a regional competition. Today, she is the executive director of the annual event. But first, she had her own run attempting to become the national champion. The day Bassey Eno-Idem’s brother passed away at 28 from diabetes complications, Bassey also lost his best friend. Out of the grief, he rooted himself in the desire to not let fear or his own insecurities dictate his future.
