Mike Wright
Exciting. Let's do it.
Jason Moore
News and notes from around the league.
Mike Wright
All right, we got another guy yelling. That's good, man. I don't even know what to start with here.
Andy Holloway
Well, we should start with there was.
Mike Wright
And news is. Let me just say this real quick news is breaking as we do this show. So we will be back on Thursday for another show as well.
Jason Moore
Just so you know, Brian Hoyer to the Texans just broke.
Andy Holloway
Did it.
Mike Wright
Wait, is that serious?
Jason Moore
Yeah, that's. That's for real life human.
Mike Wright
Okay. Cuz there was some talk that maybe that wasn't gonna happen. Well, there was fantasy implications.
Andy Holloway
We do we need to move it back because there was some really inconsiderate timing from from Philadelphia and Buffalo, who I believe just after we finished our podcast decided to make a blockbuster trade.
Mike Wright
Yes. Yes. LaShawn McCoy. Maybe you've heard of him. Maybe he is a Buffalo Bill. What do you think about this, Jason?
Jason Moore
I think it's a little shady. You see what I did there. I think that I'm actually a little disappointed in the deal for shady for myself. I believe that his actual fantasy production is going to take a hit from what it would have been in Philadelphia this year. And I think his average draft position is going to take a bump because he's going to be getting all the carries and they're going to be excited about being a Rex Ryan offense. So I think that's kind of the.
Mike Wright
What does he get a bump from? Bump from number. What was he last year? Probably number three.
Jason Moore
No, no, no. I don't mean a bump from last year. I mean a bump from where he would have been if he would have been in Philadelphia.
Mike Wright
Oh, certainly.
Jason Moore
So this coming season, I think, you know people, someone in every draft will get excited enough to bump him up one or two because they're going to believe in that offense and they're going to grab him. And so for where you're going to need to grab him just because of news, really any news that's going to cause someone to grab him. I think I don't like it.
Andy Holloway
For me, I do not like it either. Sean McCoy.
Mike Wright
That's strange. That's really strange. I wrote an article on this. You did that? I was going to go through some of those numbers before you get to your. No.
Andy Holloway
Why I don't like the Eagles had which everyone thinks the Cowboys have the best offensive line in football. But when you're talking about grading out for run blocking, the Eagles had the best offensive line in the league with that. LaShawn McCoy, even though he, I guess he finished with an okay yardage total, he struggled throughout the season more than he was successful. I believe he finished with 4.2 yards per carry.
Mike Wright
That's correct. And he was down from 5.1 the year before.
Andy Holloway
And he's going from the best blocking line to the worst in the league. Really.
Jason Moore
The worst?
Andy Holloway
Yeah. I did not know the Buffalo Bills graded out as the worst run blocking team last year.
Jason Moore
Does that matter for a running back?
Mike Wright
Sarcasm.
Andy Holloway
So I just, I think that Shady is actually on the downside of his career. He relies on shiftiness. I mean, he's not a power back and I just don't see him having the high level running back. One success in Buffalo. Obviously he's going to get the carries and fantasy football is all about opportunity, volume, get carries. So he's going to get points. Fred Jackson is still there and I just, I don't see, I don't see LaShawn McCoy returning. High end running back one.
Jason Moore
Andy, sell us on it.
Mike Wright
Yeah, I can sell you on it really easily. And, and it's funny because I have a tempered view of Lashawn McCoy over there. I'm not, I'm not the guy saying go out and draft him as a top five running back, but I can almost guarantee he's going to be a top 10 running back in Buffalo and for a number of reasons. If you looked at, if you read my article on the fantasy footballers, I just looked at Rex Ryan and his historical rush attempts per game for the six years he was in New York. They were number one, number four, number 22, 12, 6 and 3. He likes to run the ball. We all already know that. Last year you talked about Fred Jackson, right? Fred Jackson's 33. Last year he missed some games. He was the number 20 fantasy running back in Buffalo. So all things considered with that line, Shady just got a new deal. They brought him in. I expect him to have a year, not 5.1 to carry, but a year that is very similar fantasy production as last year, which puts him at 7, 8, 9, 10. And that's where I think people should be drafting him.
Jason Moore
Yeah, I would love to get him. If I can get shady at 9 or 10.
Mike Wright
And that's maybe a value thing for you.
Jason Moore
Absolutely. I completely agree with you that he is pretty much a lock to be top 10 and you want security for that pick. So if you, if you do want to grab them at six, at five, as far as far as, you know, fifth or six running back, I don't have a problem with that, but I'm not going to. But if I can grab him at 8 or 9, I would, I would be happy with that. But I believe that he'll, he's going to go as the fifth running back off the board because in Each draft, someone will want the magic, and so they're going to overdraft him.
Andy Holloway
Now, not at the risk of sounding overly shocking, which that's not what I'm going for because I haven't completely done my rankings yet, filed everything out. It will not surprise me at all if Lashawn McCoy is not in my top 12. That's. I mean, I guess we'll have to.
Jason Moore
Check the fantasy footballers.com to see those rankings real soon.
Mike Wright
Yeah, I'll be interesting to see how, how those rankings shake out. And obviously a lot of that's going to have to do with the landing spot for some of these guys that we're seeing today and free agency. Adrian Peterson, DeMarco Murray, Ryan Matthews, some of these other Frank Gore guys that we're going to talk about today. You know, where they land is going to depend on where you might put Shady. I think there will be hype around Shady, obviously, but I still think he's going to have a productive year. I don't. I don't think, you know, I'm not going all the way off of him by any means.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, and I'm not doing that either. I'm just saying the value where he's going to be drafted, like Jason's talking about, it's going to be, I would imagine, no later than middle first round. And I just don't think he's going to return for, from that draft position.
Jason Moore
I would rather have Jeremy Hill than LaShawn.
Andy Holloway
That's. That's a bold statement. So you're talking to Jeremy Hill's number one fan.
Mike Wright
You know that. That's an interesting, an interesting comparison, actually. And a lot of it has to do with offense, too, right?
Jason Moore
I mean, age to me.
Mike Wright
Well, Shady's 27.
Jason Moore
27 is the age that running backs start going downhill.
Mike Wright
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. We're having this. That might be. We had this debate last year. I did all these numbers last year when we talked Marshawn lynch. And who was right about Marshawn Lynch?
Jason Moore
Lynch is a powerback.
Andy Holloway
Lynch. Oh, no.
Mike Wright
But there's exceptions to every single rule.
Andy Holloway
Just like Adrian Peterson. Marshawn Lynch. But when you're, when you talk about average of league, when you're talking about.
Mike Wright
Running back, it's more often 28, 29.
Jason Moore
Used to be 30. It seems to be going down, but. Well, I know we have 4.2.
Mike Wright
Doesn't exactly stink. Neither did 1300 yards, 400 through the air like last year.
Jason Moore
That's when you draft him. Number Two.
Mike Wright
That's. No, it does, but it doesn't stink as a running back. You say he's declining. I just don't think. I think there was something wrong in that offense. But we could debate Lashawn McCoy all day.
Jason Moore
Yeah, but we had a lot of people.
Mike Wright
Didn't we have a bet? Isn't there some bet we had about shady.
Jason Moore
I don't. Did we? No.
Mike Wright
What was the bet we were talking about this week doing and we were gonna bring it on the air.
Jason Moore
Oh, that's right.
Mike Wright
I thought it was Sean McCoy related.
Andy Holloway
It was.
Mike Wright
Yeah.
Andy Holloway
It was a top 10.
Jason Moore
No, no, no. Top. Because I agree. Top 10. You were saying you would bet him top five.
Mike Wright
No, I would not bet him top five.
Jason Moore
Oh, you hear it here first. Him walking back on these bets. Walking back. He won't bet top five.
Mike Wright
So my entire article says that he's going to get 1300 yards on the ground, 400 through the air, and we'll be in the top 10 range. But I bet you top five. I don't think so. I don't think so.
Jason Moore
That's betting bold.
Mike Wright
All right, let's move on. Let's move on and talk about everybody's favorite wide receiver. Brandon Marshall is now a New York Jet traded for a fifth round pick. What can he do there with Eric Decker and Todd Bowles as the new head coach and that offense?
Andy Holloway
I still believe that Marshall can produce high end wide receiver 2 if. If not in the lower wide receiver 1 category. The jets, they are suddenly interesting to me with. I already really liked Decker. I think he's more talented than people give him credit for.
Mike Wright
You like Marshall more than Decker though, right?
Andy Holloway
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I'm saying you add in Marshall and now you have two actual capable wide receivers for. For Geno and Brandon Marshall has a. His catch radius is amazing. So you just have to get the ball near him and assuming he has his head right. Which leads me to my. My biggest point for Brandon Marshall is does he want to be a. An elite receiver anymore? The one who can stop Brandon Marshall is Brandon Marshall. We saw him go to Miami and just melt down. Now his. His personal life is. He's pretty open about it. It's been well documented. The football life on him was fantastic. Can. Does he have everything in check to the point where he's still going to have that drive for success? Because if he wants to be top level, he will be.
Jason Moore
Well, he didn't want to be top level. I mean, he. He melted down. As you said in Miami in Both years he had over 80 catches and over a thousand yards. And I think that. I think he's going to be.
Mike Wright
You're saying a melted down Brandon Marshall still fantasy relevant.
Jason Moore
Yes. And I don't think he's past his. He's not to the age that is scaring me yet for wide receivers by any means. And I also think he's perfect for this offense.
Andy Holloway
Right.
Jason Moore
Geno needs a guy that he can kind of go to and be a little bit less accurate with and Eric Decker needs to be the number two. Eric Decker is going to benefit, I think by this, and I agree with you, the jets offense, which I mean before this single move I'm kind of steering clear of now I'm really curious about. I really need to sit down and you know, as the offseason continues on really gauge where I think the offense could produce.
Mike Wright
Here's something interesting too. Gino obviously is going to get an opportunity there, but they're talking about Ryan Fitzpatrick being their top priority in terms of quarterback signing this offseason. And so if Ryan Fitzpatrick came in there, at least you. You put yourself in a position to be a better passing team. You don't have Rex's run first only philosophy. I still think they're going to be run dependent if you have Geno back there. But there's production to be had and that offense is. You know, Gino had games where he was putting up numbers.
Andy Holloway
Yeah. Especially at the beginning of the year. He's. He looked like he had. He was possibly turning the corner and then we. He fell on his face later on. But towards the. The back half of the year, not half. I guess the last couple games in the Geno kind of resurfaced as maybe he's getting it, putting it together. He should be a better quarterback in Gailey's system. Galey is more friendly to a. More of a spread type option.
Mike Wright
I just.
Jason Moore
I'm hit.
Mike Wright
Yep.
Andy Holloway
I'm a hit man down.
Mike Wright
Hey, at least I didn't spill the water. Okay.
Jason Moore
Yeah.
Mike Wright
This time I just collided my head into a microphone.
Andy Holloway
And the jets, we still don't know what's going on with C.J. spiller. I mean you put Spiller, Ivory Marshall and Decker, you have a. And Jason Morrow is. People are. I think they're kind of forgetting about him. He was. He had a pretty good draft pedigree. He had a couple games. He. If you watch him on film, he's a guy who can. He creates mismatches. He can catch the ball. They become interesting now. We're talking about them a lot. I'm not saying they're going to win the division.
Mike Wright
Right.
Andy Holloway
I'm putting all jets on my team. They're just, they're going to be. They're going to have value because the jets name is synonymous with suck.
Mike Wright
I think Fitzpatrick would be the quarterback if they signed him too. So I think that's an interesting place. So real quick, fantasy wise, Brandon Marshall, top 20? Yes, absolutely. Top 10?
Jason Moore
No.
Mike Wright
Borderline no. I won't say.
Jason Moore
If you said top 12, I would be very curious.
Mike Wright
Where would you have him then in your top 20?
Jason Moore
I. I would probably have him right about 12.
Mike Wright
That's my guess. And Mike, 12 to 15. All right, cool. Let's move on. Let's talk about. Well, I want to talk about a couple guys that. Well, it's not looking good for a couple of the signings. Julius Thomas to Jacksonville and Jeremy Macklin to Kansas City. The only team to have an entire season without a touchdown by a wide receiver. What are your thoughts on these two sad stories?
Jason Moore
I didn't come prepared for a eulogy, but one is needed. And so I want to remember Jeremy Macklin as a man and as a wide receiver that could catch touchdowns and Julius Thomas. It was a short life for Julius. It was quick on the scene and he, he flamed fast and he went after the money and is gone. I loved the. I forget where I read it, but someone said that their coach need to. Need to immediately bench Julius Thomas at the start of the year because they know that he is not concerned about winning.
Mike Wright
Wow.
Jason Moore
Just by the fact he took the money. Winning is not the priority for Julius Thomas.
Andy Holloway
I do not blame him at all for, for chasing the money. Andy and I both have given Macklin incredible dap. That guy, he took the big risk. He bet everything on himself one year.
Mike Wright
Deal last year coming off an ACL and he won.
Andy Holloway
He. He pulled that lever.
Mike Wright
Is he getting 11? Is that what I heard? 11 million a year?
Andy Holloway
Yeah, that's rumor.
Jason Moore
Good for him.
Mike Wright
Oh, that's bigger than Cobb.
Andy Holloway
And if you're the, if you're the Eagles, you can't possibly give Macklin that kind of money. So I don't blame them for letting him go. The Chiefs, what are they doing? Why are they spending that much? Are they saying that everything was because of the wide receiver crew that they had? There's.
Mike Wright
It was bad.
Andy Holloway
It was terrible, but it is. Was it that bad that I just, I don't.
Mike Wright
I think they could get upwards of two to three wide receiver touchdowns this year now that they've brought in Macklin. No, I mean it's, it's interesting because.
Andy Holloway
Alex Smith is still there.
Mike Wright
Well, and that's the problem because it's easy to look at Reed and say his wide receivers have produced over the years, because they have. But it's Alex Smith. It's the way that offense functions. You got, you do have an up and comer with Kelsey. You have a run, you know, a run dominant team with Charles and with Nile Davis. So I think the eulogy was pretty appropriate for Macklin. He's outside of my top 20.
Andy Holloway
I'm done. I'm done with Macklin.
Jason Moore
Yeah. Macklin is not somebody that I'm excited about, but I actually think that Macklin makes the offense obviously better and I think he opens it up for both Kelsey and for Jamal Charles.
Mike Wright
I think Jamal threat on the outside.
Jason Moore
Absolutely.
Mike Wright
Yeah.
Jason Moore
And they had none. Dwayne Bowe is, you know, over the Dwayne Bow.
Mike Wright
So Eagles wise, I mentioned this to you guys yesterday. They're the first team in franchise or in NFL history to lose their leading receiver and their leading rusher in the same off season.
Jason Moore
And their leading quarterback could be gone via trade as well.
Mike Wright
You're saying Nick Foles could be gone. So what is going on? And then more news about Gore not signing there today. Something is amiss in Philly.
Jason Moore
We've got to get our beat writer, Andrew Goldwasser from the Philadelphia Eagle area. Yeah, I want to see how his emotional state is right now because you've got some highs and lows as a Philly fan. I couldn't imagine if I was genuinely a Philly fan, what I would have gone through over the last few days and whether I'd be in my closet with the light off right now, I don't know.
Mike Wright
That seems like the regular off season for Philadelphia these, these days. Two years ago they had the super team signing where they went out and signed everybody. And then last year was the Chip Kelly experiment, you know, the excitement. So yet again, we don't know what's going on. Are they going to end up with, you know, losing those two guys, not getting Mariota, not having, you know, a lot of fantasy relevance or something going to change. So yeah, Julius Thomas, I don't know what to make of that. I mean, it's good to give Bortles some mismatch ability out there, but they're overpaying for a Manning inflated tight end.
Andy Holloway
I mean, they're paying what they have to, to, to get the guy that they Wanted. I agree. You have to get, you have to get players around Bortles, which their, their wide receiver crew I think is actually is capable. Especially if, if Blackman is able to come back this year, their wide receiver should be.
Mike Wright
I think the wide receivers are good.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, we, we know how I feel about Alan Robinson. The target. Monster. The monster.
Mike Wright
Good friend of Alan Robinson.
Andy Holloway
But Julius Thomas is just, what is.
Mike Wright
He still a tight end one?
Jason Moore
Yeah.
Mike Wright
I mean if you're saying top 12.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, I guess because to be a tight end one you would need like 700 yards, a couple touchdowns.
Jason Moore
Yeah, yeah, he's definitely a tight end one. I've got some questions, genuine questions as to who would you draft? Okay, so who would you draft, Julius Thomas or Antonio Gates?
Mike Wright
Antonio Gates for me.
Andy Holloway
Yeah.
Mike Wright
At this point. Offense. I go with the offense.
Jason Moore
Okay, so you're going offline opportunities. Here's another one that's changing offense to a changing team. We've got Julius Thomas or Martellus Bennett.
Andy Holloway
Bennett is a, is a tricky character because he is notorious for amazing starts and just crap finishes. Last year was finally the exception for him as he finished as a top five tight end for the first time in his career.
Mike Wright
I think I like Bennett.
Andy Holloway
Yeah. With the offensive change is the, is the question. I mean and I guess you gotta go.
Mike Wright
Marshall's gone. He's probably your number two option right now, so. Well, number three behind Forte, Forte and Jeffrey. Good questions. Yeah, those are interesting. It's, it's not like a fantasy relevant tight end hasn't come out of Jacksonville in those down years. Mercedes Lewis was relevant for a couple of years and he's obviously a goal line monster. I mean Thomas didn't put up huge second half numbers but he had so many touchdowns last year.
Jason Moore
So he'll be relevant.
Mike Wright
It's just hard to lose a top three tight end.
Andy Holloway
Do you like Thomas more or less? If Jacksonville hauls DeMarco Murray much more for sure.
Jason Moore
Move the chains, you keep the play going. Get down, you know, in the red zone. More opportunities to score touchdowns because that's Julius Thomas's specialty is scoring touchdowns. And if that team, if I was confident that they were going to be putting up a lot of points per game, then I would like Thomas.
Mike Wright
Yeah. Let's talk about some breaking news here. Frank Gore is expected to sign a three year deal with Indianapolis.
Jason Moore
Crazy.
Mike Wright
Who also just signed Trent Cole from Philadelphia. So Indianapolis is also supposed to potentially bring in. Andre Johnson's on their way over. On his way over today. If you don't know Andre Johnson and Frank Gore both went to the University of Miami. So them uniting together is a possibility in Indianapolis. So let's talk Frank Gore first spurning the Eagles despite never playing for them or signing a real contract. Gore, Indianapolis. What do we have?
Jason Moore
I was, when we talked about Frank Gore in the offseason as just potential free agents, that was the number one spot. I was hoping he would go. His skill set is perfect. Look at what Ahmad Bradshaw did last year and Ahmad Bradshaw is not as good as Frank Gore. Now today, if Mahmoud Bradshaw is healthy and Frank Gore is old, I take Frank Gore. He's been an amazing pass catching back. They didn't use him that way last year, but that wasn't by any means his fault. He's a great pass catcher. He's a great, I mean, all around. He's going to protect Andrew Luck. He's going to be on the field left and right. And so I really, really, really like Frank Gore. I think you're going to be able. Because he's older and because there's, you know, you know, I expect they'll probably sign someone else or resign Ahmad Bradshaw. You might be able to get him a little, a little bit later. For somebody who I think is going to produce top 12, I really do.
Andy Holloway
Yeah. Frank Gore actually has not been a Pass catcher since 2010. 11. 2011, 17 catches. 2012, 28, 2013, 16. Last year, 11 catches. So he now at the beginning of his career, he was, he was a tremendous threat through the air.
Mike Wright
Alex Smith days.
Andy Holloway
Yeah.
Mike Wright
So dump offs.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, he's.
Mike Wright
I mean, we know they do that in Indianapolis.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, I side with Jason. I love Frank Gore in Indianapolis. I would say I probably liked him in Philadelphia a little bit more, but he, he's. I don't know how you, when you're a 32 year old running back, how do you actually gain fantasy stock? That's insane. When you move from your old team to a new team and somehow you're, you're a more valuable fantasy commodity.
Mike Wright
It is a rarity and especially at that age. But one of the things is I really liken it to a situation where any player comes into Peyton Manning's area to that, that potent of an offense with an up and coming quarterback. My dependency is on the quarterback. I think that quarterback moves the ball, they score. I mean, how do you not love the number one running back in that situation? Now it's not a done deal yet. So if we come on the show and say it's 100% done and then you know an hour after the recording, he's not signing. Well, it's kind of foolish, but that's what we do.
Jason Moore
Great news here today to break on the fantasy footballers because last week it was so annoying leaving our session and then breaking news and we had to wait forever. Well, there's no longer a need to wait in the off season. We are bringing two shows a week.
Andy Holloway
Are we. We're fully committed to two.
Jason Moore
We're doing it Thursday for sure this week.
Mike Wright
Yeah, we'll be on Thursday.
Jason Moore
So much news to cover.
Mike Wright
There is so much, there is a lot to cover. And we'll be coming up on draft.
Jason Moore
Season, so we just keep getting emails.
Mike Wright
We are doing two shows a week all year long. When draft season comes around, probably by.
Jason Moore
July, you guys keep asking for two. We're gonna give you two.
Mike Wright
True. That's true. All right, let's, let's move on. Let's talk about a couple of less exciting but depending on who, if you have them as a keeper. Randall Cobbs returning to Green Bay, which I do. I think this is a surprise to some people who thought he might run off the Jacksonville to Oakland to maybe get the money. He got a $40 million deal for four years. I think he made a brilliant decision. I think we all, we talked about that last show. You know, you cement yourself with Aaron Rodgers for the next four years, your, your next contract's bigger at age 29 when he's still in his pro ring is bigger. I mean they should have been in the super bowl last year. Great, great signing by Green Bay, keeping him there. Good value, Good value on him.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, I agree. And so he, he's gonna average 10 a year. The, the rumor was the Raiders were offering in between 11 and 12. So let's say over four years you're giving up 8 million. Right. But then your next contract is nothing because you're, you're not gonna have the inflated numbers of Aaron Rodgers. So you're giving up 8, 4 to 8 right now for another big payday.
Jason Moore
He'll get another $50 million contract because inflation and by the time that rolls around, contracts are going to be bigger. And so that's going to be huge money in his pocket.
Andy Holloway
Yeah. And he's also young enough that he's going to get another contract.
Jason Moore
So let's talk the fantasy relevance because last year he put up career highs in receptions, in yards, in touchdowns. It's scary to go and take a guy based on those numbers saying, well, he put up his best year ever. But his age says you Know, some people put up their best year after year after year until they peak. So we. Which is he. Did he peak?
Mike Wright
Close. I. The touchdowns are the hard thing because he had a ton last year. 12 touchdowns. I think 10 is reasonable in that offense. So I don't, I don't think, I think 90 receptions, 1200 yards, 10 touchdowns is where I have him, which isn't too different from last year. But you know, he's, he's a gamer and he's young.
Andy Holloway
There was, I saw an interesting stat from. I believe Mike Clay put it up referencing Cobb's first half of he was getting lower to much lower targets. Maybe like six or seven targets a game. And that's where the bulk of his touchdowns came. Second half, his targets went way up and his touchdowns went down. So he was quite an anomaly of less targets but more touchdowns.
Mike Wright
Historically his touchdowns haven't been that high. Obviously he's, he's an ascending player but it's hard because he's more of a, you know, he's not your prototypical goal line receiver and so those are a little more enigmatic. Any other thoughts on Randall Cobb? We also had Ingram resigned with the Saints. So you didn't see a change of venue for him, but you saw a commitment by the Saints to make Pierre.
Jason Moore
Thomas just to sign him.
Mike Wright
Well, they did release Pierre Thomas.
Andy Holloway
They had their, their cat.
Jason Moore
Problem is I didn't think they were going to be able to sign him. There's no place that Mark Ingram could have gone that I would have liked his even, almost even Dallas just because I was so worried about his contract year. But the fact that he stayed around in the offense he's there with and that they gave him a commitment. I'm actually really liking Mark Ingram for this coming year.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, he looked like a completely different player. He looked finally like the first round pick that he was last year. But it, it's, it's up to the Saints. Are they going to give him the carries?
Mike Wright
He doesn't it seem like the commitment financially would mean they will?
Andy Holloway
You would think so. But you would also think somebody trading up into the first round means they're going to give a guy carries which for years they did not. I lost my train of thought. Oh, but it's up to the Saints of Willa gave him the carries. Kyrie Robinson's still there. You don't have to worry about Pierre Thomas. But Cadet is the new Thomas I would assume. And they, he, when they gave him the carries, he produced outstanding fantasy numbers and real life numbers.
Mike Wright
Wow.
Andy Holloway
But he did. It looked like he was wearing down. I don't know if he can handle anything.
Mike Wright
I mean he still didn't run for a thousand yards. He didn't run for double digit touchdowns. He's not a running back one to.
Andy Holloway
Me because he wasn't getting the carries at the beginning of the year. He also missed a couple games. You have to. If, when we're talking about the workload, you have to extrapolate out when he was actually.
Mike Wright
Yeah. And he only had 226 carries last year and he's only 25 years old and that often seems to be trying to take some of the burden off.
Andy Holloway
Of Drew, which they should.
Mike Wright
Which they need to do because he's, he's getting up there. But to me he's probably in the 15 range as a running back.
Jason Moore
Would you rather have Joic Bell or him.
Andy Holloway
Ingram. That's not even a question for me.
Mike Wright
I think Joy Bell. I think Joy Bell. Although that's a little dependent on what Detroit does this off season. Yeah, that's a, that's a good question. Any other thoughts on Ingram and the Saints?
Andy Holloway
No.
Mike Wright
Okay, let's roll back around. I just want to see what you guys think about Andre Johnson and his production value in Indianapolis if he signs with the Colts. Because I see this as circa three year, three years ago, Reggie Wayne, when he came out and had a humongous PPR type year for Andrew Luck. I see the same. I see him having a resurgence there in terms of more of a PPR receiver. Hilton's obviously the guy, but I don't see any reason why he can't come into that Wayne role a few years younger. He's only 34, I believe, and 80 balls.
Andy Holloway
Yeah.
Mike Wright
Eight, nine touchdowns.
Andy Holloway
That's completely reasonable. I love Andre Johnson there. Dante Moncrief. Owners are crying themselves to sleep if that actually happens.
Mike Wright
They still have Knicks too, right? No, he's a free agent.
Andy Holloway
But they do have Carter. But yeah, I agree. I like Andre Johnson there. They throw. Or if they continue the trend, they. Andrew Luck's going to throw the ball about 850 times and Andre Johnson is. He's still talented. I mean, he still had a good season. It was strange the. What Houston did of telling your star who still was productive. Well, if you stay with us, next year you're going to catch probably 40 balls.
Mike Wright
Yeah. And now he gets to play Houston twice a year. Those will be some exciting games.
Andy Holloway
He's going to drop the hammer.
Mike Wright
Yeah. It's weird because I look at. If you Guys, you know, remember fantasy about three, four years ago, it was Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, those were the ones. And now you look at this offseason and you saw kind of two different philosophies with those guys. Right. They're both similar now because they're not downfield threats as much and their athletic ability is descended. But Arizona re upped Larry and valued the leadership as much as the possession receiver position. And then Andre Johnson got shown the boot and he's the best Texan that's ever played. It's just interesting to see that kind of transition between those two guys. But yeah, I think if he ends up in Indianapolis, there's a lot of relevance there. Do you agree with that, Jay?
Andy Holloway
I do.
Mike Wright
Seem like you were wavering maybe.
Jason Moore
No, I think he's a wide receiver too. I look down at the wide receivers that are out there. You know, I would, I would like him more than, you know, Keenan Allen or Jeremy Macklin.
Andy Holloway
Jeremy Macklin's a wide receiver dead.
Jason Moore
Well, well, he's still going to, you know, I'm not. Even though I eulogized Jeremy Macklin and I, I still think that Jerry Macklin will get his catches and, you know, he'll, he'll be a fantasy relevant player. Depending on where he's drafted. He might not be on any of my teams, but I do, I think that Andre Johnson has value there. You want to be on high power offenses. He left because he wants the ball, those two things coming together and he's still super talented.
Mike Wright
So I didn't see much of a, you know, when they went to him and needed to go to him, he seemed like the same player to me. Let's go ahead. And I want to ask you guys this question. We'll talk about some more of these guys on Thursday. We'll probably have some more information about Adrian Peterson. Percy Harvin is going to be released today. What is he fantasy wise? We'll talk about that. We'll also talk a little bit about some of the other signings that take place over the next two days. But I want to ask your guys general philosophy on guys on new teams and how that relates to fantasy. Because there's this kind of, you know, Jason alluded to it with the Lashawn McCoy situation. This, there's the extra buzz, there's the unknown. And in fantasy, we love the unknown, but that doesn't always translate to fantasy production. So, Mike, what does the fantasy hitman think about these signings? How excited should you be? How should you draft them?
Andy Holloway
It all relates to the team that they're going to. Generally speaking, it's not. Doesn't work out, especially when you get the high level guys because they're chasing a big contract. The people who can give big contracts are crappy teams with crappy quarterbacks. I guess the Tannehill is improving, but you saw that with Mike Wallace. He took the money, he went to Miami. He has not been anything close to what he was in the Steelers offense. Greg Jennings was, I guess you can consider him. He was kind of at the. He was coming down off of his peak, but he took the money, he went to Minnesota. He thought he could be awesome. Christian Ponder thought otherwise.
Mike Wright
Yeah, it's interesting because a lot of the worst free agent signings historically have been at the wide receiver position. Even going way back to Alvin Harper signed by Tampa Bay or Javon Walker, if you remember him, signed with Oakland.
Jason Moore
Here's my philosophy on players changing teams. It depends on your position first. If you're running back changing teams, I generally don't like it. I just don't think that there's been as much history of a free agent running back changing teams and being successful. There's exceptions to every rule. But you know, when we looked back and said, okay, what was the last big running back free agent signed to a new team who just really produced, it's pretty hard. It's pretty hard to think of many. It's hard to think of one. When it comes to any pass catcher, here's my rule. Did their quarterback improve or did their quarterback get worse? And that's how I value them. If their quarterback improved and say you went and got Peyton Manning because you're Emmanuel Sanders and you switched teams that way, well then that's great. I'm going to really value you. If you're Julius Thomas and you're leaving Peyton Manning, then I don't like it. So pass catchers, I just look at the quarterback situation and going back to Andre Johnson, if he goes to Andrew Luck, that's a huge improvement in quarterback. The balls he's going to be getting are better. Easier to catch and going to produce more.
Mike Wright
Yeah, I think that's a good take and I think a lot of the times you need to pay attention to, you see the name changing teams but you don't necessarily, you know, these guys oftentimes come into situations where they're not the bell cow or they're sharing carries and it's not as obvious in the beginning of that taking place. So you got to pay attention to that as well.
Andy Holloway
But an offensive scheme, which is a thing that the average fantasy player is not going to take into account. You will if you listen to our show because we will talk about it. But a running back from team X to team Y, is it.
Mike Wright
Does it suit them?
Andy Holloway
Right? Are they the zone or they a power team? I mean, we saw Darren McFadden. I mean, the team, he didn't even leave teams. But he was coming off a tremendous year where his health finally kind of held up.
Mike Wright
But he just was a beast in the zone blocking.
Andy Holloway
Right. And then things switched and he was garbage. So the runners have a particular set of skills the way that they've seen the field their entire careers and it's. It's hard for them to make a change from finding a hole to just following a guy.
Mike Wright
Yeah, I agree. You might have even seen that a little bit with Shady last year with just what Chip Kelly wanted to do offensively.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, that's a very valid point.
Jason Moore
Mailbag, mailbag.
Andy Holloway
It's been a while.
Mike Wright
Sing it, Hitman. Yeah, we're gonna go to the mailbag today, ask a few keeper questions. I want to get your guys's takes on these. I think they're good questions. Remember, you can email your question to the fantasy footballers by opening your inbox and sending an email. That's electronic mail, Mike. To mailthefantasyfootballers.com and we'll be happy to read it on the show. Answer your question. This one comes in from James. Fort Lauderdale has a keeper question. Help me choose two keepers. And in this situation he has to exchange the draft pick. This is common for most keeper leagues, right?
Andy Holloway
Yes.
Mike Wright
Where you have to exchange the draft pick where you drafted the guy. So his options are these. Demar. I think I already know your guys answer. But demarco Murray. Well, maybe demarco Murray for a one. We don't know his end situation yet. Julio Jones for a three or Jeremy Macklin four. A five, Mike.
Andy Holloway
Oh, it's Julio. Julio Jones.
Mike Wright
That's a lock and load.
Andy Holloway
Julio 3. Oh, my goodness.
Mike Wright
That's a steal. Huge steal. He's a late round.
Andy Holloway
Jeremy Macklin probably is.
Mike Wright
So do you take Macklin for a five?
Andy Holloway
No.
Mike Wright
Okay, so you're going. If I have.
Andy Holloway
If like I have to keep two keepers.
Mike Wright
Yeah.
Andy Holloway
I'm going to take Murray. Okay. If I have complete control, I'm taking that Julio Jones for three and then I will draft a running back with my first pick.
Mike Wright
I'm going to get your take, but I'm going to let everyone know that it's done Gore to the Colts three years. 7.5 million, I think so I would.
Jason Moore
I would definitely.
Mike Wright
75 guaranteed. That is. Sorry, go ahead.
Jason Moore
So. So the same amount of money that was reportedly guaranteed from Philly.
Mike Wright
Exactly. Ouch. Yeah. He used that as a template before he.
Jason Moore
I would. I would definitely take DeMarco and Julio. I'm assuming this question came in before the news on Jeremy Macklin.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, you would have.
Jason Moore
You know, and. And I would. I would. I would rather keep DeMarco for the first rather than draft the running back in the first. Because in a keeper league, you're probably not drafting guys that actually go in the first. So I would. I would hold on to him.
Mike Wright
Yeah. I have to agree with you guys. Julio and DeMarco. I think wherever he. DeMarco lands, he's going to be smart about his chance to win.
Jason Moore
Yeah.
Mike Wright
He's a. Is he in your first round grade?
Andy Holloway
Is he? Once again, I haven't done the race.
Mike Wright
10, 11, 12.
Andy Holloway
But he. It's very possible. Julio Jones is my top receiver.
Jason Moore
I'm going to play with fire with Julio because he is who I think. I think he's top two and he's super high for me, but his ADP is a little lower. So he's not going to be in my first round draft wise. But he is going to be. I want him early in the second round.
Mike Wright
Grab him on the turn.
Andy Holloway
Love it.
Mike Wright
Yeah, Love it. All right, this question comes in another keeper question. A 10 team league. This is Todd from Dallas. He said he cannot keep any player drafted in the first three rounds. And so he needs to pick between, I guess just one between these guys. Drew Brees, Ryan Matthews, Frank Gore and Tori Smith.
Jason Moore
Not. Not the best. I think Hitman would say no. Drew Brees. You can draft the quarterback late.
Andy Holloway
That is correct.
Jason Moore
Ryan Matthews. We don't know where you're going, so that's tough. Tori Smith's reportedly going to be signing with 49ers and I like Frank Gore. I think you need running backs. I would go Frank Gore on this list.
Andy Holloway
Yeah. Right now it's Frank Gore with a.
Mike Wright
Little caveat for Ryan Matthews.
Andy Holloway
Right. I still like Ryan Matthews. I made a prediction off air, which I will now publicly proclaim. I think Ryan Matthews ends up in Philadelphia. I think they're gonna get scorned by everyone and they will settle for the glass man. And if Ryan Matthews ends up in Philadelphia, I. That's a really. That'd be a really, really hard call between those two because I think they will Both have good years, but I'm, I might, I'd probably have to lean Frank Gore.
Mike Wright
Yeah. As of right now, I think that that's the right pick. I don't think it, I think it comes down to those two guys anyway. Both, obviously. This guy got them outside the top three rounds last year, so I agree with you guys. I think Gore is interesting in Indianapolis. I really do.
Andy Holloway
Never, never keep a quarterback. Never.
Mike Wright
No. And that's, that's something I was going to bring up. Well, as we get closer to the draft, we're going to spend a lot of time talking philosophy of draft. What you'll notice in a lot of leagues with less, I guess, experienced fantasy players is you see quarterbacks flying off the board and you're going to be tempted because they're the big names that, you know, if you're a new player. Listen to our show. We're going to, we're going to break down exactly what you need to know. That's something I get asked a lot. New players will ask me every year. Hey, what do I, you know, I know, Mike, you do this for a couple people too. They'll be like, oh, I'm gonna play in a league for the first time this year. I draft like Aaron Rodgers. Right. I draft Peyton Manning. Right. That's my first guy off the board. Because that's the assumption. Right. The most relevant big name.
Jason Moore
Those are the guys that are the reason why it is, Mike, actually. Okay. In a keeper league to keep a quarterback. Sometimes knowing your league because they're, if you're, if the rest of your league values them, then their trade value might be far higher. I know, you know, you, you don't have great options and you want to hold on to a guy that you know someone is going to be foolish enough to trade you for a first. And you, you know, I would, I would keep that in mind. Is, is the fact that you might grab him because of his value to other people and keep him there. But, but generally I agree with what you're saying.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, I suppose if you are in a draft pick trading league, that's possibility. I still prefer to go with not, not, not relying on a trade having to be made instead of taking the player that I value more.
Mike Wright
All right, one more question, guys, from the listeners. This is from Kurt in San Diego. He has a, I guess just a general question. Do you prefer 10 or 12 team leagues, keeper or redraft leagues? Jason, 12.
Jason Moore
Not even close. 12 is so much better than 10 to me. More strategic. And as far as Keeper or redraft? Love them both. I say get in one keeper league.
Mike Wright
Are you into fantasy football? You like it?
Jason Moore
Get in one keeper league. That way you can have that, that team and then be in a couple different redrafts.
Andy Holloway
I prefer 12 just because of the, the skill level of 10 teams here. The, the rosters tend to get pretty stacked with superstars with a 12. I mean it doesn't seem like that many more players. We're only adding two teams, but you're.
Mike Wright
Taking an extra 15, 30 players total maybe.
Andy Holloway
Yeah. Off of the, off of the waiver wire, off of the, out of the draft. I prefer a keeper. I like two keepers.
Mike Wright
That's just kind of my two total keepers for trading draft picks for them.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, the trading of draft picks is hard because.
Mike Wright
No, I mean for a keeper league where you have to give up.
Andy Holloway
Oh yeah, I prefer. You have to. Yeah, you have to pay for your keepers. Which brings the strategy of who do I keep because of their cost and not just, oh, I have the best players, so I keep them.
Mike Wright
Yeah. Another idea too is some leagues we're in limit the amount of times you can keep a player.
Andy Holloway
Yeah.
Mike Wright
And so that's an idea. And the only other thing I'll say, I like 12 team leagues too, but I'd rather play in a 10 team league with active players than a 12 team league with inactive players.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, that's true.
Mike Wright
So if, if you are starting a league, make sure you get guys that are committed to it because there's nothing worse than playing in a league. And this is what happens a lot of times if you join a league through the major services, ESPN or cbs and it's a random league, you have three or four guys that are really playing and competing with one another and the rest are inactive. So find active friends to play with and if you can get to 12 teams, because that seems like the right number. I think we think we both agree or we all agree on that.
Jason Moore
And James and Todd and Kurt from wherever you're from. Where are your funny names? Come on guys, step up. Step up the game.
Mike Wright
We do have a lot of new listeners.
Andy Holloway
Yeah, we have risen up the. The search engine which not. Not to toot the own horn, but I will. If you search fantasy football on the podcast store behind the big heavy hitter of cbs, you're gonna see the up and comer, the new kid on the block, the fantasy footballers, because we're bringing the noise. I completely forgot I was talking about.
Jason Moore
Yeah, so we got a lot of new listeners. That means a lot of email. A lot of people that don't know we prefer funny names.
Andy Holloway
Yes, you. Luckily for for these characters the email load is not tremendous right now because it's only the insane people are talking about it and and still obsessed with it. But yeah, generally we prioritize. If you have a very funny name, you get moved up the list. We all laugh, we chuckle, we're jolly. The world's a happier place when you send in a funny name.
Mike Wright
It is. We enjoy them. Don't forget. Subscribe review on itunes. Keep us moving up the list. Send us your questions, mail to fantasy footballers.com and check out our new website at thefantasyfootballers.com we will be back here Thursday morning probably saying whoops on a couple pieces of news that we dropped today. But lots of new news will probably be breaking and we'll be excited about it and Adrian Peterson will be an Arizona Cardinal by then and we'll all have our new Adrian Peterson jerseys on and Jason will lose some more water bets by then.
Andy Holloway
Check out on fantasyprose.com I have a piece up on second year running backs that yes, it is an exhaustive list people. I went through all of them and I wrote something, at least a little something on everybody. There will be something coming for.
Mike Wright
I was exhausted when I read it.
Andy Holloway
Yeah.
Mike Wright
Yeah.
Jason Moore
I was entertained.
Andy Holloway
Andy, if you like Bishop Sankey. I'm sorry I don't have anything nice to say about him.
Mike Wright
Yeah. So Bishop's mom. Avoid this article.
Andy Holloway
Don't read that.
Mike Wright
Ken Wizen hut. Avoid this article.
Andy Holloway
Ken Wisenhutt. Ridiculous.
Mike Wright
There's also a good consensus rankings, new early consensus rankings on fantasypros.com if you want to check them out. I found those pretty useful so.
Andy Holloway
And there will be a another piece for me coming up sometime in the near future. We're going to go through. I'm going through all the second year players so wide receivers will get a write up. I don't know if you know this. There's about 10 billion second year wide receivers so it's taking some time.
Mike Wright
Yeah. And so many rookies that performed last year that this is going to be an interesting second year for them and the new crop coming in. I'm excited guys. Let's, let's keep it going. See you Tuesday or Thursday. See you Thursday.
Andy Holloway
Keep it going. What are we talking about?
Mike Wright
No, no, no. We're at 50 minutes. We got to cut this one down. But we'll put this up today and be back on Thursday morning.
Andy Holloway
Yeah. Leave a review please. It really helps. Five star, preferably.
Jason Moore
Yeah, you. You give a five star. We might just read a couple five star reviews to open a show just for.
Mike Wright
Yeah, that'd be smart. Yeah, let's do it. All right, guys, see you later.
Andy Holloway
Goodbye.
Jason Moore
Thank you for listening to another edition of the Fantasy Footballers Podcast.
Title: Fantasy Footballers - Fantasy Football Podcast
Episode: Fantasy Football Podcast 2015 - Free Agency, LeSean McCoy, Frank Gore, Mailbag
Release Date: March 10, 2015
Hosts: Andy Holloway, Jason Moore, Mike "The Fantasy Hitman" Wright
In this episode of The Fantasy Footballers, the expert trio dives deep into the bustling free agency period, analyzing key player movements and their implications for fantasy managers. From LaShawn McCoy's controversial trade to Brandon Marshall's latest move, the hosts provide insightful commentary and actionable advice to help listeners navigate their fantasy rosters effectively.
The episode kicks off with a heated discussion about LaShawn McCoy’s recent trade from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Buffalo Bills. The hosts express skepticism about the trade's impact on McCoy's fantasy value.
Jason Moore expresses disappointment, stating, “I think his average draft position is going to take a bump because he's going to be getting all the carries and they're going to be excited about being a Rex Ryan offense” (04:01).
Andy Holloway highlights McCoy's performance decline, noting, “he finished with 4.2 yards per carry. And he's going from the best blocking line to the worst in the league” (05:09).
Mike Wright offers a tempered view, suggesting McCoy could still finish as a top 10 running back, saying, “he is pretty much a lock to be top 10 and you want security for that pick” (07:06).
The consensus leans towards cautious optimism, acknowledging McCoy’s potential to remain valuable despite concerns about his new team's offensive line.
Next, the hosts delve into Brandon Marshall's trade to the New York Jets, evaluating his fantasy prospects in the new offensive setup.
Andy Holloway believes Marshall remains a high-end fantasy receiver, stating, “I still believe that Marshall can produce high end wide receiver 2 if not in the lower wide receiver 1 category” (10:44).
Jason Moore concurs, adding, “I think he's going to be fantasy relevant” (12:16).
Mike Wright discusses the potential impact of a new quarterback on Marshall’s performance, mentioning, “if Ryan Fitzpatrick came in there, at least you put yourself in a position to be a better passing team” (12:51).
The trade is seen as an opportunity for Marshall to thrive in a more pass-friendly offense, though concerns about his personal stability linger.
The episode also covers the signings of Julius Thomas to Jacksonville and Jeremy Macklin to Kansas City, both of whom are viewed skeptically.
Jason Moore offers a eulogy for Jeremy Macklin, describing him as, “a man and as a wide receiver that could catch touchdowns” but lamenting his short-lived performance (15:35).
Andy Holloway praises Julius Thomas for chasing the money, stating, “I do not blame him at all for chasing the money” (16:24).
Both signings are critiqued for their questionable impact on their respective teams and fantasy viability.
A significant portion of the discussion centers around Frank Gore's expected three-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts and the potential signing of Andre Johnson.
Jason Moore champions Gore’s move, highlighting his pass-catching capabilities and role in protecting Andrew Luck: “He's a great pass catcher. He's a great, I mean, all around” (22:23).
Andy Holloway remains cautious, noting Gore’s declining pass-catching stats: “Frank Gore actually has not been a Pass catcher since 2010” (22:52).
Mike Wright likens the Colts' offense to a potent setup with Peyton Manning, expressing excitement about Gore’s role: “how do you not love the number one running back in that situation?” (24:43).
Regarding Andre Johnson, the hosts are optimistic about his potential resurgence in Indianapolis, comparing his possible role to Reggie Wayne’s in relation to Andrew Luck.
Listeners submitted questions about choosing keepers in their fantasy leagues. The hosts provide tailored advice based on team composition and league settings.
James from Fort Lauderdale is advised to keep DeMarco Murray and Julio Jones for their high fantasy value, despite Jason noting that Macklin’s recent performance doesn’t make him a preferred keeper (39:35).
Todd from Dallas, restricted from keeping first three-round drafted players, is recommended to select Frank Gore over other options like Drew Brees or Ryan Matthews, considering Gore’s potential upside in Indianapolis (42:03).
Another question addresses the preference between different league formats.
Jason Moore favors 12-team leagues for their strategic depth, while Andy Holloway prefers the competitive balance they offer over 10-team leagues (44:58).
Mike Wright emphasizes the importance of active participation over league size, advocating for engaged 10-team leagues rather than inactive 12-team ones (46:31).
The hosts discuss strategies for evaluating players who have switched teams, emphasizing the importance of offensive schemes and quarterback performance.
Jason Moore advises evaluating whether a player’s new team has an improved quarterback, which can significantly impact a receiver’s value: “If their quarterback improved or did their quarterback get worse” (37:29).
Andy Holloway adds that offensive schemes must suit the player’s skills, citing Darren McFadden’s decline after offensive changes (38:04).
Overall, the philosophy centers on assessing how team dynamics and player roles change post-signing, rather than relying solely on player reputation.
The episode wraps up with announcements about upcoming shows, additional content on their new website, and a call for listener engagement through reviews and email submissions. The hosts encourage listeners to subscribe, leave five-star reviews, and stay tuned for more in-depth analysis in future episodes.
Andy Holloway promotes their latest articles on second-year running backs at fantasyprose.com (48:44).
Mike Wright highlights their partnership with fantasypros.com for consensus rankings, enhancing fantasy planning tools for listeners (49:10).
Jason Moore: “I think his average draft position is going to take a bump because he's going to be getting all the carries and they're going to be excited about being a Rex Ryan offense.” (04:01)
Andy Holloway: “he finished with 4.2 yards per carry. And he's going from the best blocking line to the worst in the league.” (05:09)
Mike Wright: “how do you not love the number one running back in that situation?” (24:43)
Jason Moore: “If their quarterback improved or did their quarterback get worse.” (37:29)
This episode of The Fantasy Footballers offers a comprehensive analysis of the early free agency moves of 2015, providing valuable insights for fantasy managers looking to capitalize on or avoid certain player signings.
