Welcome to the Fantasy Footballers Podcast coming to you from the fantasyjocks.com studios with your hosts, Andy Holloway, Jason Moore and Mike Wright.
Jason Moore
Back in the building.
Conor McGregor
Connor. Thank you.
Jason Moore
Did you understand anything Connor was saying? Because I think he was speaking Irish.
Conor McGregor
I got most of it. And look, I mean, he's got a big fight on Saturday, so thank you.
Jason Moore
For taking the time out.
Conor McGregor
So, good friend of the show, Conor McGregor.
Jason Moore
Am I correct that you wrote that you did that music?
Conor McGregor
I had nothing to do with that. Connor sent that in.
Jason Moore
Wow. Yeah, I believe that. I think the gist was that there's an ultimate draft Kit or something like that that's always updated.
Unknown Speaker
You can either get the ultimate draft part of it or you can get the fight.
Jason Moore
Welcome to the show, the Fantasy Footballers Podcast. Back again, talking wide receivers. On today's show, we've got news and notes. We have some mailbag we're gonna get in here as well. It's a jam packed superstar episode. Yeah, there you go. Mike's wearing his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle T shirt.
Conor McGregor
Of course.
Jason Moore
Yeah. Jason's wearing his classic plaid ensemble.
Unknown Speaker
You know it.
Jason Moore
And that means we're ready to go. So let's. Let's jump into a quick question from how much do you look to the preseason as valuable for team and player information?
Conor McGregor
Ooh, love it. So in the preseason, here is what I am personally looking for. I'm looking for a usage situation for a particular player. Let's say the one that's jumping out to me is in Denver. Virgil Green, tight end, kind of a darling of the fantasy community because his metrics are unbelievable. As an athlete, we kind of thought, hey, maybe last year he'll do something, but he did not. However, Mark Sanchez was looking for him in the passing game. I'm going to track that situation. If Virgil Green continues to get targets, he's moving up in my draft board.
Unknown Speaker
It's funny that you say that, because last year we talked about one of the positions that it seems every year is a little Bit more telling in preseason is the tight end because you can see whether or not they're going to be, you know, first of all, who it's going to be and second, are they running routes or blocking? You know, you can get a little bit of clues. And this year we've seen that, right? Clive Walford came comes to mind. Advance McDonald. You know, there were, there were reports like, is he going to be the starting tight end? Is he going to be the third string? And he was clearly the guy in that first preseason game that, that's definitely something I look for is I think more about the team and less about the players. Like what is the team doing? And of course, they're masking what their, you know, in season plans are going to be to the best they can.
Conor McGregor
And I also look for if someone is getting particular hype in training camp, does that person actually seem faster or more acclimated to the game? Like Mark Ingram last year, Doug Martin last year in like, I'm thinking of, you know, the Terrence west where I don't know if he looks incredible. He looks better than Terrence west has ever looked.
Jason Moore
Andre Williams.
Conor McGregor
Yeah, Andre Williams, another great name of. So these are guys, if they're getting the hype, check it out with your own eyeballs, see if they're, if they're passing the test or not.
Jason Moore
Yeah, that's what it comes down to for me. You guys summed it up well. I pay attention to the individual players and how they actually run routes and perform. You know, Sterling Shepard caught one pass, but he was blocking. He looked every bit the part in game one athletically. And so I like watching the player, not the stat line. So that hopefully answers your question there today on the show, like I said, we're going to get into the wide receivers. If you want to connect with us, you can do it on jointhefoot.com which is our fantasy football community. You can also check out the website thefantasyfootballers.com for all of our rankings and information, submitting questions for the show and things like that. You can follow us on Twitter the FFballers. Every now and again we like to head over to itunes, look at the reviews and highlight a review or two from the listeners. And Jason, like only Jason can normally reads those to us. So we're gonna do that. We're gonna do that this morning.
Andy Holloway
Review a source rags.
Unknown Speaker
This one comes in from Whey soup. Sounds delicious.
Conor McGregor
Whey soup.
Unknown Speaker
Whey, like the protein powder, actually. That sounds terrible.
Conor McGregor
That's what that's what I've been doing guys.
Unknown Speaker
Thanks Ballers. I reluctantly joined my work league after my brother forced me to ensure I finished ahead of him. I tried many websites and podcasts to learn everything fantasy. Not to mention I've never followed football. I have cut out all the other riff raff because the FF ballers were dedicated analysts with the hottest takes, excellent guitar riffs, knowledgeable guests and occasionally laugh out loud capable. Occasionally led me to the finals and 3 and O against my brother. Thanks ballers. Well thank you waysu.
Conor McGregor
Thank you.
Jason Moore
Thanks for the review. We appreciate that. I'm glad. It kind of felt like our system was upgraded to LOL capable like the previous version of our operating system was not that funny. But now we've reached an LOL capable. So thanks for that review. We appreciate all the support from everybody out there.
Conor McGregor
They help us out.
Jason Moore
Yes they do. So let's jump into the news.
Andy Holloway
News and notes from around the league.
Jason Moore
Not a ton to tell you about. However, we do have a few bits of news and then we're going to get into the wide receivers Washington Post still expects Matt Jones to be the workhorse back in Washington. I and Jason has said that he's fading on Matt Jones. I have no reason to fade on Matt Jones at this point. So Jason, maybe explain why you are or sure.
Unknown Speaker
The reason that I'm fading is because here's the reality. Does anybody in this room think Matt Jones is a is a good running back that we've seen, like on film, that you look and say he really excites me as a player?
Conor McGregor
No.
Unknown Speaker
I know you want to say yes, Andy.
Jason Moore
Yeah, I would say that I consider him to be an NFL running back. Yes.
Conor McGregor
Yeah. Okay. I can say that there are plenty.
Jason Moore
Of players that are not in a.
Unknown Speaker
Category, but the real, the real, you know, good appeal of Matt Jones this year is the opportunity. It's the fact that he's going to be the workhorse, just like this post says. I'm starting to doubt that. And the fact that this post comes out right, nothing has changed. Absolutely nothing has changed there. Why do they need to come out and say, hey, I still expect Matt Jones to be the workhorse back?
Jason Moore
Well, like, because the GM talked about Keith Marshall in an interview and everybody freaked out.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. I mean, what I saw and what I think is going to happen is if Matt Jones doesn't perform well, Chris Thompson is going to be heavily involved. I think he's going to be involved regardless. And Keith Marshall will get his opportunity the same way Matt Jones got the Opportunity when Alfred Morris wasn't doing well. And so I'm just a little bit reluctant to believe that Matt Jones is a lock for the 250 plus carries. That's the only reason I'm fading him is that if he goes out and gets 215 carries, I don't think he's going to be all that super valuable for you and where you're drafting him. There are a few guys that I think I like little bit better.
Conor McGregor
Yeah, I'm just for his ADP sake on fantasy football calculator right now, Matt Jones is 505. That is two spots behind Jeremy Lankford and Jonathan Stewart.
Unknown Speaker
So you are give me Jonathan.
Conor McGregor
You would be taking Jones over those guys and the guys directly behind Matt Jones, Arian Foster, Ryan Matthews and Melvin Gordon.
Jason Moore
I would take every name that you said over Matt Jones.
Unknown Speaker
I think that's.
Jason Moore
But not because, I mean, I'm not fading Matt Jones. I just, I agree with you. Nobody's ever said he's a lock for that volume. I mean, if any player start, you know, any player that isn't tenured starts to struggle, the guy behind them is going to get an opportunity, whether it's Latavius Murray and the volume we like for him or anybody else. I mean, Matt Jones had a fumbling issue, so that maybe makes him a little riskier. But to me, there hasn't been like production. It's not like Keith Marshall set the world on fire. Well, in preseason game one, I mean, to me they've come out, they spent the whole camp saying they like Matt Jones. Matt Jones, you know, he said, I think he said it himself that ball security is job security for him. He knows that the job, it comes down to being able to protect it. But I don't think you hand it to a rookie necessarily right off the bat. So I like his odds of being the workhorse. But there you go. NFL Networks, Mike Garofalo reports. Brandon Lefell has a torn ligament in his hand. And Jason weeps.
Unknown Speaker
You know, back a couple months ago.
Jason Moore
When you weep and rejoice because you love Tyler Boyd.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, Tyler Boyd is the true guy that I like there. The only reason I'm not crazy high on Boyd because I think he has a lot of talent and he's got good opportunity, has been the fact that, you know, Marvin Lewis doesn't use rookies, but he's going to pretty much have to at this point. Tyler Boyd is, you know, he's pretty much the second wide receiver there now with this hand injury and if there's one thing, one thing that Brandon Lafeld does not need.
Jason Moore
Is it disadvantage at the hand?
Unknown Speaker
Is it the disadvantage at the hand?
Jason Moore
John Harbaugh came out and said no update on Rashad Perryman. Yep.
Conor McGregor
On the partially torn ACL and the. We needed to clarify. Marvin Lewis does not expect lefell to miss week one.
Jason Moore
Right.
Unknown Speaker
Just.
Jason Moore
That's a good point.
Conor McGregor
So don't go crazy for Boyd yet.
Jason Moore
There was some Joe Flacco talking about Mike Wallace this morning and the impact he's making on that offense. Mike Wallace or Kamara Akin?
Unknown Speaker
Kamari.
Conor McGregor
It's still Akin for me.
Jason Moore
Is it getting closer? No, I think it should.
Conor McGregor
I've seen plenty of Mike Wallace to know that it's. I'm not moving him up until I. Until I really see it.
Unknown Speaker
Okay, well, I will say this. You want to give me Mike Wallace or Brashad Perriman. That's not. Because, you know, I have zero trust.
Jason Moore
Mike Wallace or Steve Smith?
Unknown Speaker
Mike Wallace.
Conor McGregor
Wallace.
Jason Moore
Okay.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I think. I think that's the order I go. Aiken, Wallace, price. That's it. And then Smith after. That's it. And then. And then Pearman. I'm never drafting Pearman. If it was a dynasty, I might be.
Jason Moore
He shaved his hair.
Unknown Speaker
That's true. We got a lot younger. He does look very good. He lost a lot of age. Hey, before we get into what is really important, I mean, you're talking second half wide receivers. These are the guys here that are going to help you win leagues. Everyone knows the first round, but a couple rounds in, that's where you're going to find the gyms at wide receiver and make a difference over your competition. But before we get to that, we want to tell everybody about one of the best friends of this show, Pristine Auction. Look, if you've been listening for a while, you've heard us talk about them, if you're new and you don't know who Pristine Auction is, they are an incredible place to find signed merchandise of anything you want. Look, if you listened last year and you got your championships, your foot clan titles, you want a signed Jordan Reed jersey or Kirk Cousins or David Johnson or whoever, you go to Pristine Auction and you can find these things. I keep finding jerseys cheaper that are signed than I can go into the store and purchase.
Jason Moore
All authentic, too.
Unknown Speaker
I'm thinking I'm just going to start like buying jerseys to wear from Pristine Auction. Totally authentic. Great, guys. And if you've got a present to get or you want to deck out your man cave or Your girl's room, whatever you want. Go to Pristine Auction. That's P R I S T I N E Auction. And browse this stuff. It's free to browse, free to bid. You only pay when you win.
Conor McGregor
And also, I said let him. When you sign up for a free account, let them know the footballers sent you.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. This is big news. Timeout here for a second. This is real big news.
Conor McGregor
You just go, Zach, timeout.
Unknown Speaker
Breaking news, Breaking news. We might have mentioned this a little bit before, but David Johnson will be. If you are in the Phoenix or the Arizona area or even like New Mexico or California, you want to drive out. David Johnson's gonna be at Pristine Auction this Saturday. And that's really cool. You can sign up for get tickets on the website.
Jason Moore
We'll post it on Twitter. Yeah, you link to buying tickets.
Unknown Speaker
But even more important, we're gonna be there as well. So if you want to come and get, you know, get the real value.
Jason Moore
Since you too did, come see us.
Unknown Speaker
We'D love to see at Pristine Auction this weekend on Saturday.
Andy Holloway
Wide receivers.
Jason Moore
All right, yesterday we went through our top 15 wide receivers. Going to read them back very, very fast to you. Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, Ldell Beckham Jr. AJ Green, Des Bryant, Brandon Marshall, Allen Robinson, Deandre Hopkins, Mike Evans, Alshawn Jeffrey, demarius Thomas, Keenan Allen, Jordy Nelson, Sammy Watkins, Brandon Cooks. And if you wanted to hear us talk more in depth about any of those wide receivers, you just have to, you know, scroll down and click on Play Yesterday's show. Play Yesterday's show Today. Today we're going to talk about kind of the second tier of guys. Very important to talk about these players. A lot of different opinions about where they'll finish. And so I think these are some of those team maker or breaker type of players. We'll get through as many as we can. And I want to get into the mailbag a little bit on today's show as well, answering some listener questions. So let's go ahead and kick it off with Amari Cooper. Amari Cooper, wide receiver, youngster from Oakland. Very good rookie season. Had an injury towards the end. What is your perspective on Amari Cooper? Where are we going right? Where are we going wrong? Let me say this before you jump in. I want to know what you think about this. You know, if you're hyping a guy like Mike Evans, I feel like you have to hype a guy like Amari Cooper. Am I right or wrong?
Conor McGregor
I mean, you can somewhat be right. I don't think that the thing about Mike Evans is he is the alpha wide receiver for that team. You have Vincent Jackson who is. Is assuming lead the two, but he is, he's past his heyday. He's still, he's still a fine player, but he was not like a Michael Crabtree Mari Cooper situation. And it's funny you bring up Mike Evans because people crush Mike Evans for the drops. You know who had the second worst drop rate since 2006? That was Amari Cooper. Dropped 20% of his passes of his targets. So if you're going to crush Mike Evans for the drops, you certainly have to pile it on for Cooper. That doesn't change how I feel about him, though. But the interesting thing, and this is, this was compliments of my man, Scott Barrett, dfb. You may. He was previously dude fantasy bro. However, he talked about the drop rate and then he looked at goal line targets. Michael Crabtree had eight, Seth Roberts had three. Mari Cooper, Mr. Dropsy had zero, which I thought was.
Jason Moore
So he didn't drop any in the red zone.
Conor McGregor
That's what you're saying, no goal line targets. I'm saying that. No, I, I'm saying that Carr did not trust Amari Cooper, but he also.
Unknown Speaker
Didn'T drop any red zone goal line targets.
Conor McGregor
Sure. Okay. Because he didn't get one.
Jason Moore
Yes.
Conor McGregor
All right. All right.
Jason Moore
But he still put up a very productive fantasy season. He, you know, to me, I feel like you have to, you have to look at the tape and say Amari Cooper, despite the injury at the end of the year, still went over a thousand yards. That's a rarity for a rookie wide receiver. Still scored six times, apparently all big plays because he wasn't targeted in the.
Conor McGregor
Red zone goal line. These are goal. I was talking.
Jason Moore
Okay, go.
Conor McGregor
The thing is, I'm not trying to just disparage Cooper. I'm just trying to pump the brakes a little bit to say that I don't think Cooper can be that top eight guy. I think he's.
Jason Moore
I think he can.
Conor McGregor
I don't think he can.
Unknown Speaker
Cooper is the perfect. You know, we do these fantasy face offs from time to time and in fact we have a fantasy face off article on Cooper. He's the perfect guy right now to do this with because I believe that people either think he's going to take a step forward or that he's not worth the draft price right now because worked into his draft price. If you're going, you know, to your draft tomorrow is a step forward where you're drafting him right now, is he is going to outperform last year. If you want to return. Here's some guys. He's going right next to Keenan, but so is my.
Jason Moore
That's what Mike Evans is too. By, by a lot.
Unknown Speaker
Well, but Mike Evans.
Jason Moore
Mike Evans is worked into, I mean, his, his job position. You're. You're basically estimating a huge step up for Mike Evans.
Unknown Speaker
I don't think that that's actually true.
Jason Moore
How is that not true?
Unknown Speaker
Well, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper are literally. They're two wide receivers apart. I mean, you're choosing right now between Mike Evans and Amari Cooper.
Jason Moore
Yes, that's why I said both of them.
Unknown Speaker
You have two years of history with Mike Evans. You have a double digit touchdown season and you have, you know, over a thousand yards. So I think that there's a little bit more data to say that Evans will do it. Cooper had that injury at the end of last year where he could have had a better season last year. And maybe he takes that step forward. But he's being drafted ahead of guys like Alshon Jeffrey and Ty Hilton, Brandon Cooks. Those are guys that I would probably prefer over Amari Cooper.
Jason Moore
Okay.
Unknown Speaker
Just for draft value.
Jason Moore
And that's fine. I'm not all aboard Cooper, you know, being this ascendant fantasy top five guy, I do think he's absolutely capable. He's the kind of guy who athletically, I mean, you saw him outrun in open field. He was in the top 15 and yards after the catch. He was somebody that is a game breaker on the part for me. In the open field. He's the one guy that reminds me most of Odell Beckham Jr. Where he. You can take a catch and you can athletically just beat people to the end zone. That's why I think you could see not. Not projecting. You could see his touch in total double.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, no. And I love guys where you can get him a screen and he could take it to the house and that. That is definitely Amari Cooper.
Jason Moore
Yeah. And there, you know, he's obviously completely different than Mike Evans. Mike Evans was like 250th in the league and yards after the catch or something like that. Yeah, well, not 250th, 250 yards and was like very different in the 50s. So different players. Let's move on from Amari Cooper to another foot injury. To another foot injury. This is Julian Edelman. Look, a lot of people doubted him as a fantasy producer before the draft last season and he rewarded those that drafted him. Yes, he was a dominant force for the first part of the year, he had seven touchdowns, which was really the game changer for him. You talked about, you know, Amari Cooper had six last year in nine games. Julian Edelman had seven. That changed everything because he was already being targeted so often that, you know, he's the number one guy there. So what is the effect of Brady being out? Where should you draft Edelman? Is he, is he kind of like the way we view Jordy Nelson with the okay, if he, if he's healthy and he hits, you've got a right 10 guy.
Conor McGregor
And I actually, I'm rising personally on Julian Edelman because the ADP of him is, is going down not a ton, but you've, you can see the effects of what players want in him because of the Tom Brady suspension in the fourth round. You got Randall Cobb, Jarvis, Landry, Edelman Macklin and Tate and Baldwin's there at the end. Julian Edelman is the clear target to me for. If you want to take a wide receiver in the fourth round, I would be ecstatic about that because look, he's not suspended. He's going to play those first four weeks and he, I think he can give you some pretty solid production, not the, not the levels that he'll give you when Tom Brady is in, but I think he can still be a solid wide receiver too. And then you're getting a guy with who. Maybe it's gross because you don't like how the situation is, but he's got top 10 upside to me, especially if those touchdowns can continue.
Unknown Speaker
I love players like Julian Edelman, like Wes Welker, because every single year their value in the draft goes, it just plummets because nobody wants the guy that isn't 6 5, you know, that isn't that big red zone target catch that slot guy. If you look back to when the season ended right in March and people remembered what Julian Edelman was doing on the field, he was a second round pick, but as the off season has continued, he just continues to plummet. And now I think you're going to be able to get him at the end of the fourth round, maybe even in the fifth round in certain drafts because you forget how involved he was. I will say this. I'm a little worried about those first four games without Tom Brady because the timing, routes and those things that, you know, I think he needs Brady to be a true super valuable talent. But you're not going to get zeros in those first four weeks.
Jason Moore
No, no.
Unknown Speaker
And once Brady's back, you're talking about a guy who can absolutely be a wide receiver one. And you could draft him as your wide receiver three.
Jason Moore
I agree. So let's, let's move on from Edelman. Go to number 18 on our list, which is Ty Hilton. And guys, I vetted this in week eight of 2015. He had a foot sprain. And so you've got. We're keeping the theme going. It was only on the injury report. He didn't miss any games, but he had a foot injury for one week. So Ty Hilton, we talked yesterday about Brandon Cooks and I see Cooks and Hilton in the same vein. Good offenses, good quarterbacks. Last year in more ways than one. Hilton had some bad luck, still put up a big season and you know, I could see him being a value right now. I mean, I look at him as a value in the draft. What do you guys think? I agree that he can 135 targets.
Conor McGregor
Right. He's. And he's going right now in the third round. He's sandwiched between Cooks and Demarius Thomas. So it would be. It's going to depend on what my team looks like in the draft for if I'm going to go on in Hilton for that price.
Jason Moore
Let me ask you this. Reports out of camp Hilton's been the best player on the field.
Conor McGregor
Yeah.
Jason Moore
You're talking about him 18 in our wide receiver rankings here. Let's say you went into a draft and you wanted to go with Gronkowski or you wanted to go with running back early and you end up in a position where Ty Hilton is your wide receiver one on your team.
Conor McGregor
Yeah.
Jason Moore
How do you feel about leaning on Ty Hilton, the guy with, you know, 69 receptions last year, 1100 yards. But touchdowns.
Conor McGregor
Yeah. The touch and the touchdowns for Hilton are actually funny of rookie year 7 and 5 and 7 and 5. Hey, clearly we know we seven nose and take Nostradamus here, know that he's going to get seven touchdowns. You book it what you act, what you know for sure you're going to get from Hilton, 130 plus targets and over a thousand yards. So my answer to your question is do I feel comfortable? No, I just don't. But I should.
Jason Moore
I was going to say you're almost describing A.J. green.
Conor McGregor
Yes, I should. I should. Plus targets and it's.
Unknown Speaker
I.
Conor McGregor
That's one of those just weird things where you feel the ups and downs and the ebbs and flows of Hilton's productions. But you're gonna get, you're going to get right around Wide receiver one numbers from Hilton.
Jason Moore
Ty Hilton at his value point right now, which you can check for me. I don't know where he is today.
Conor McGregor
Middle of the third.
Jason Moore
Middle of the third. Or Dante Moncrief.
Unknown Speaker
I like the value better for Dante Moncrief because if Dante Moncrief finished this year ahead of Ty Hilton, I wouldn't be shocked. I don't expect that to happen. I think Ty Hilton will be the wide receiver one for the Colts, but it wouldn't blow me away. In fact, when Andrew Luck was in last year, I believe that it was actually not Hilton who was the number one. I think Moncrief was pacing as the number one there, so I could see that happening. And you're talking about, you know, several rounds of difference in cost. I'd rather grab one of the guys right around Ty Hilton so that I can grab Moncrief because I'm not grabbing both.
Jason Moore
I. You know, as we get to this next guy on the list, I'm reminded that we left one bit of news off that I. That we need to let people know about, and that's John Brown.
Conor McGregor
Yes.
Jason Moore
So John Brown has not returned to practice from his concussion.
Unknown Speaker
That's two weeks running, and that's not a good sign at all. Usually, you know, with concussions, you are able to be back in a couple of days or it's a problem. If it lasts for weeks, you know, it's a problem. And here's why it's a little bit scary is now if you draft the guy and he gets a hard hit hit in week six, if you've got a history of those concussions that linger, it's just, it's a little bit more difficult to get back out. The, you know, the, the repeatability of brain trauma goes, goes up and gets worse. And so that is a little bit scary. And that stinks because I'm so high on John Brown this year. So what? I just want him to get back on the. On the practice field immediately.
Jason Moore
Okay. We also. Bruce Arians is okay.
Conor McGregor
Oh, great.
Jason Moore
He was released or supposed to be released from the hospital today. They said he's fine. So that was another bit of breaking news from yesterday. We didn't cover. A lot of people watch Bruce Arians on All or Nothing and got to see behind the scenes there and glad he's doing okay. All right. Jeremy Macklin's the next wider studio dirty Cake. The Dirty Cake himself. Jason. I remember vaguely we made some sort of wager or bet. I don't remember exactly who won those things. Could you elaborate On.
Unknown Speaker
Oh, I can elaborate. Yeah.
Jason Moore
What was the bet exactly?
Unknown Speaker
The bet was that Jeremy Macklin would not go over 1,000 yards. I bet that he would not. You bet that he would. And he squeaked his way.
Jason Moore
Oh, come on.
Unknown Speaker
He got 10, 88 yards.
Jason Moore
That's not a squeak.
Conor McGregor
Yeah, I wouldn't say it was a squeak either.
Jason Moore
Yeah, exactly.
Conor McGregor
But the. But the way he did it, you might call a bit of a squeak. So Macklin, like we said, 87 catches, almost 1100 yards and eight touchdowns.
Jason Moore
Beautiful.
Conor McGregor
The eight touchdowns was very surprising for me. But here's why he's the dirty cake, right? He had monster games. So he played 15 games. He had three humongous games of 141, 148, 160 where he was just. He looked like Jeremy Macklin from the Eagles. However, if you average out the other 12 games he had, he was averaging 53 yards a game.
Jason Moore
Welcome to life as a wide receiver in Kansas City.
Conor McGregor
Exactly right. That's.
Jason Moore
That's the reality.
Conor McGregor
And the targets were just so erratic of you. Oh, he's going to get 13 targets here. Now he's going to get three. You just. There was no consistency from the dirty cake.
Jason Moore
I am still firmly in the camp that I would adore Jeremy Mock Macklin as Jeremy. As my wide receiver.
Conor McGregor
I love Jeremy Marklin.
Jason Moore
As you sip your LaCroix. I am firmly in the camp that I adore him as a wide receiver, too. If you look at his prolific upper tier in the Chip Kelly offense season in 2014, you're talking about 143 targets, 85 catches, 1300 yards and 10 touchdowns. You put him in the opposite offense of sorts. You know, a defensive oriented team that likes to run the ball, likes to be safe with Alex Smith, 87 receptions, 124 targets, almost 1100 yards and eight touchdowns. I can dig it. That's my. Give me a wide receiver, too. That gets me a good baseline and gives me some boom games from here to there. I'm just fine with it. He'll probably be on a lot of my team.
Unknown Speaker
I will say this. I actually, I feel like my wide receiver too. I have the different approach than you on this and maybe that's just a different strategy. I would prefer the Julian Edelman or the Golden Tate. The guys. And those are the two guys going right next to Jeremy Macklin right now. Those three guys are. You're going to pick between one of those guys and you're not going to get them in the next round. And for me, if I grabbed A big guy early on in the draft and got an AJ Green or someone like that. Then I want that consistency from my wide receiver too. As opposed to the boom. The guy that's going to get 10 targets a game versus the guy that could get 13 targets or four.
Jason Moore
Well, yeah, I mean, I guess I don't think we're talking about the same thing here because Macklin to me is that consistency just because he had. Yeah, I mean I'm looking at his games. He was extremely consistent. He was the 15th best wide receiver and it wasn't just because of boom games. I mean he had double digits in 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 of his 16 games.
Unknown Speaker
His targets, 11, 13, 12, those are great. Then 4, 5, 6, 6, then 11, 10. I mean it's like you're going to have those stretches where he gets double digit targets if they're passing the ball that game. But you've got runs where he's just getting five targets a game. Six. I mean I think when I look at Jeremy Macklin, he is the number one for his team. He will produce on the season, but I don't think you're going to have the consistency week to week that you would have with an Edelman or a tape.
Jason Moore
It's funny because we are just diametrically opposed on this. I mean last year we need another water battle. You already did one wide receiver consistency ratings. Last year Jeremy Macklin was 13th in the NFL where Golden Tate and Julian Edaman were in the 20s. So from a week to week perspective, we just disagree on, on Jeremy Macklin, what he brings to the table. I mean getting. He didn't have duds through the board.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. And a lot of that was very lucky in the sense that two of those games where he had four targets, he got a touchdown in those games.
Jason Moore
Which is what we like from Brandon Marshall.
Unknown Speaker
No, no, I'm just saying it just lucky though. It worked well, it's.
Jason Moore
How is it luck?
Unknown Speaker
Because you only got four targets a game. One of them was a touchdown. That's great.
Jason Moore
You're saying it's luck.
Conor McGregor
I'm not going to say the word luck but to score on four targets, it's is, it's great.
Jason Moore
You're arguing against statistics. To me. No, the stats say he's more consistent.
Unknown Speaker
Because of the tough.
Conor McGregor
If you're talking about a guy like.
Jason Moore
Marshall, because he can do that. That's what he can do. He's a red zone target. He also gets the ball. You're looking at just his target numbers. He gets the ball in into rounds. He runs the ball, they run it with him. So I, to me, I think Jeremy Macklin needs to be the center of some sort of very ferocious bet.
Unknown Speaker
Okay, well, we'll have to, we need.
Conor McGregor
Some kind of a full on cake in the face bet for Jeremy Macklin.
Jason Moore
Yeah, I mean to me, a guy that finished 15th last year that you can get. Now we're ranking him 19.
Unknown Speaker
All right, here, here's, here's a good bet. We got to find the area where we don't, where we disagree on Macklin.
Jason Moore
A thousand yards receiving.
Unknown Speaker
Well, no, I'm joking, but we'll find that area. And whoever wins the bet, the loser has to eat cake off the ground. I mean that just makes sense with this one. This is the dirty cake.
Jason Moore
I have no problem with that.
Unknown Speaker
All right, so we'll, I will saddle.
Jason Moore
Up and ride Jeremy Macklin.
Unknown Speaker
Well, after the show we'll figure out what that threshold is. A dirty cake bet.
Jason Moore
And that's it for the show. It's the Jeremy Macklin show. No Michael Floyd coming in behind Jeremy Macklin in our rankings. For whatever reason, Mike, you have no numbers beside these guys. So this would be 16, 17, 18, 19. This is our 20th ranked wide receiver. Look, we just talked about John Brown. If these things linger, this could be a separator for Michael Floyd and John Brown. Floyd looked really good in the preseason. He had, what was it, six out of eight games with 100 yards towards the end of the season.
Conor McGregor
Yeah, in the final eight games he had five of eight.
Jason Moore
Okay, there you go.
Conor McGregor
He went over 100. He was averaging 80 yards a game in those. And so week eight, week eight through 17, once Floyd was really back and the hand was fully healthy, he was the wide receiver 20 and that he missed a game in that time period. So he, once he was back, he was very dominant.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, you're in a high power offense. He is a first round talent and this year he's in a contract year. So you know, those things are helpful for pushing through injuries or you know, really laying everything on the line because he wants to get paid.
Jason Moore
He's a favorite of mine in standard leagues. Not as much in, in full point league. That's because his reception totals just aren't up there. I don't think he's ever had more than about 60. You can, you can bet that. But he is a, he's a big play threat. He's somebody that was very, very good towards the end of the year and I think I was very high on him. In the beginning of the off season. And kind of like Jason with John Brown, we've all realized that game to game, Fitzgerald, Brown, Floyd are going to be the focal point at times. And so it's hard to just jump all in on a guy, you know, in the beginning of the offseason, I was saying Floyd, to me, has top 12 potential.
Conor McGregor
He still does.
Jason Moore
Yeah. He just. It's just really. It's one of those tough mouse clicks. If you're drafting him, you're just like, am I really going to bet on Michael Floyd?
Conor McGregor
65 is your answer. He's 65.
Jason Moore
Okay.
Conor McGregor
In 2013, that's when he was 65 for over a thousand.
Unknown Speaker
Dude.
Jason Moore
Do you remember when. You know, that reminds me of Vincent Jackson.
Conor McGregor
Sure.
Jason Moore
For years and years, Vincent Jackson was this mythical creature in fantasy football that looked like he could always be a superstar, but only caught 60 balls. So let me ask you this. Are you willing to bet on Michael Floyd in your draft? Are you willing to, you know, you talk about other players you're willing to draft and lose with. Are you willing to take the chance on Michael Floyd?
Conor McGregor
Michael Floyd is currently going at the top of the field, fifth round. So behind him is Eric Decker and Moncrief. With my passionate and romantic feelings for Dante Moncrief, I would not. I would take Moncrief at the top of the fifth.
Jason Moore
What about you, Jason?
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I would take my. I would take both Decker and Moncrief over Floyd. I think Floyd has a higher ceiling than Eric Decker for sure, and I think probably just as high a ceiling as Dante Moncrief. But my expectations coming into this year are that you're going to end up with those games where Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown just. They had the right coverage that game, and the ball went that way with any of the Arizona. I think I'm starting to realize that. I think the safest Arizona Cardinal might be Larry Fitzgerald.
Jason Moore
Yeah, he's definitely the safest. I mean, look at the target totals last year and the reception totals.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. So for me, I do like Michael Floyd. I think he's a guy that, despite his ADP being ahead of Decker and Moncrief, I've seen drafts where he falls because, you know, he's the type of guy where you either have someone that really believes in him or everyone kind of is like, eh, and so he can fall and become a value in your draft, but he's not going to be bad. None of the Arizona Cardinal wide receivers with that offense are going to be bad. On the season. So when you grab one, you're grabbing a player that you can put in your lineup and play. You just got to make sure you get the right value.
Jason Moore
If one of the three gets injured off the field. Do you feel the same way about J.J. nelson coming into the third wide receiver role?
Unknown Speaker
I think personally, yeah, this might surprise both of you. I don't know what kind of take I'm going to get on this, but I think Jaron Brown is the player that I'm more excited about in that. In that fourth wide receiver role. He has flashed all training camp. He's looked good in replacement of John Brown. So that's. That's the guy that I would actually.
Conor McGregor
Yeah, I agree. I think that Jaron would be the replacement.
Jason Moore
Jordan Matthews and Eric Decker are the next two names on our list. 21 and 22. I think we've talked at length about Decker Consistency is his middle name. It actually, I looked on the birth certificate. It's a weird middle name. It's probably why he falls in fantasy draft.
Conor McGregor
Very, very forward. Forward thinking.
Jason Moore
Forward thinking. Yeah. So I'd rather talk mostly about Jordan Matthews here. Boy, I don't like Jordan Matthews.
Conor McGregor
Jordan Matthews. I don't know what to do with him as well. Last year, 85 catches, almost 1,000 yards, 127 targets. You're talking a completely different offense. He. To me, he's still the best wide receiver on the team.
Jason Moore
If Jeremy Mackin, what is he going to play? Jeremy Mackin's the dirty cake. Jordan Matthews is the shiny poop. Oh, come on. That's. I mean, there's nothing. There's nothing more defining of him because you have this. He was the winner. Right. In our postseason awards.
Conor McGregor
Stick with calling him the garbage man.
Jason Moore
The garbage man.
Conor McGregor
Yeah.
Jason Moore
Okay. He's the shiny garbage.
Conor McGregor
That's fine.
Jason Moore
All right.
Conor McGregor
That's more appropriate. Jordan Matthews. You want to talk about garbage man? 50% of his yards came in four games.
Jason Moore
I like how on our. On our show notes, you write 50% of yards in four games and then you have the.
Conor McGregor
The sad. The diagonal face.
Jason Moore
The diagonal face to sing.
Conor McGregor
Man, that's tough because that's not a situation that you want to count of his. He's a perfect example of the end of season numbers did not match how you felt about playing him every single week. But like I said, best. In my opinion, best wide receiver on the team. But he has been designated as a slot guy from the previous regime. It seems he is being designated as a slot receiver by the current regime.
Jason Moore
Yeah.
Conor McGregor
And Doug Peterson's system, if he's bringing over what Andy Reid did, they don't use a slot receiver that frequently. So Jordan Matthews simply will not be on the field with the frequency that he was last year.
Jason Moore
Over under seven touchdowns for Jordan Matthews.
Unknown Speaker
Under.
Conor McGregor
I would take the under.
Jason Moore
Okay. First two years, eight touchdowns. A lot of garbage time. Touchdowns. I was curious your guys take on that.
Unknown Speaker
He's had a lot of production for first two years. I think he's good and I think he's a good wide receiver. I think this is a bad system for him. He's going to be. He's definitely going to be the slot guy there. I just don't think the volume is going to be there for him to produce in fantasy out of the slot in this offense.
Jason Moore
Mike made this point in studio. Eric Decker since 2011, the number six in the league in total touchdowns.
Conor McGregor
That just be nanas.
Jason Moore
That highlights a consistency of being that kind of, you know, a guy that can get into the end zone. Last year he was incredible. He was somebody you could lean on. The best. Probably wide receiver too. You could have had outside of maybe, you know. No, that's probably it.
Conor McGregor
When you cake in the draft value of last year.
Jason Moore
Exactly. That's what I mean.
Conor McGregor
This year it seems like people are finally going, oh, yeah, hey, Eric Decker, he's actually pretty good. Sure, because he's going in the fifth round instead of the eighth or the ninth round. But that like we just highlighted in the fifth. Michael Floyd, Eric Decker or Moncrief, I think that's a. That's a tough situation for me to go in on Decker there. However, if he falls to the sixth or so, then I would be perfectly fine.
Unknown Speaker
I could see myself taking Decker even over Moncrief, who I. Who I like. Depending on the situation. If I have, you know, one of those real big boom type. If I got, you know, Julio up top and I just want to that plug and play wide receiver too. I can catch. Then I'm going Decker. I agree with Andy. He's a perfect wide receiver too. He always has been. He's not a wide receiver one in the NFL.
Jason Moore
He does not. Boom.
Unknown Speaker
But if you put him as a second wide receiver on the field, he's just so perfect. He knows how to get separation. He's a great red zone target.
Conor McGregor
He's very huge red zone.
Unknown Speaker
Huge red zone.
Jason Moore
Golden Tate and Jarvis Lander will wrap up our wide receiver discussions before the mailbag here. 23 and 24 in our rankings. Golden Tate and Jarvis Landry now, Tate, he was a yak master two years ago, led the league in yards after the catch. He has a rapport with Stafford. He always surprises us with his. How he looks on the field. I think he's a great wide receiver. I still like Marvin Jones to be the better draft value and actual NFL wide receiver than Golden Tate. I think he's a much better red zone guy, so that's why I like him. But Golden Tate, PPR monster, what are your thoughts?
Conor McGregor
Yeah, I can agree with the PPR monster. And the thing about Tate is last year, don't take his numbers from last year at face value. His average catch dropped from 13 and a half yards to nine last year. Everything was extremely bad for the Detroit Lions that first half. And then if you follow his. His numbers and his box scores, like every Detroit line, the second half, the production went way up. But my question for Andy then is, I mean, you. You have to at least on some level, buy into Golden Tate, if you like staff, Absolutely.
Jason Moore
Oh, I buy into Golden Tate completely.
Conor McGregor
Okay.
Jason Moore
And this is just one of those Ty Hilton and Moncrief situations where the price you pay for each guy. I'd rather just pay the lower price for Marvin Jones than I would for Golden T. But I love both players. I love the fact that Anquan Bolden is there. I think Anquan Bolden helps both of those guys. If you watch preseason game one or talked about how Bolden looks around camp, he looks like an con Bolden. I mean, he is a strong, tough receiver that demands coverage in the middle of the field and will only help these guys on the outside. So to me, Golden Tate is a good value in the draft. Marvin Jones is a good value in the draft.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah, I agree. I think Tate's going to get 150 targets last year, the second half of the season, like Mike was talking about, he was the wide receiver 24. So, I mean, he was a wide receiver, too. And that was with Calvin Johnson on the field. His opportunity is there. He's always been good, and I know that there's a new offensive system, but he has a rapport built with Stafford that's not going to go away. Golden Tate is good. I agree with you, Andy. I will end up with more stock of Marvin Jones, but I think at the end of the year, Golden Tate has more fantasy points.
Jason Moore
Jarvis landry at number 24, the guy just is a target vacuum.
Conor McGregor
He's a vacuum.
Jason Moore
He's the first, second and fifth read for Ryan Tannehill on every play. And he finds space. The real question for him is, you know, you just know he's not going to get into the end zone very often.
Conor McGregor
Yeah. And my favorite quote from the offseason and from the Dolphins was adam Gase was talking about Jarvis Landry, about how he is just this vacuum for targets. He said he would script up plays intentionally trying to get the ball away from Jarvis Landry, but Jarvis Landry would just get open and the ball would go to him.
Jason Moore
That's funny.
Conor McGregor
So look, the production will be there for Jarvis Landry. The targets are going to be there. I think that he is a good football player.
Jason Moore
He's a great football player.
Conor McGregor
He is not the, the ultra dynamic athlete that we desire from our wide receivers, but he is a very good football player. I think he is. I think he's over 100 receptions and over a thousand yards.
Jason Moore
Again, I agree with that. If you want to see the actual stat projections we have for any of our wide receivers or any other position for 2016, as well as all of our player profiles, check out the ultimate draft kit@ultimate draft kit.com we worked tirelessly and continue to work on that to get you prepared for your draft. F
Hey guys, my name is Casey. I'm calling from Kenosha, Wisconsin. I was listening to the Wednesday podcast. You guys are just taking it to listen to questions and you've got a guy from a city in Wisconsin and you guys just butchered it horribly over and over again. I'm pretty sure that guy was writing in or email or whatever from oconomowoc. Yeah, so I don't know if you want to pull the email up again, but yeah, so Okanawak, Wisconsin. Just wanted to throw that out there because it was just hilarious listening to you guys. Yeah, fumble that one up. Anyways, take it easy. Great, great show. You know, all that stuff. Keep doing it.
Jason Moore
So that was the question. So going to the tape here, I want to confirm this. Dan in. Oh my goodness, Wisconsin. Where is Akatamawak?
Unknown Speaker
Okanamawak.
Conor McGregor
You guys have never been to Okinamawak.
Unknown Speaker
He's a native over here.
Jason Moore
Dan has.
Conor McGregor
It's my second home.
Jason Moore
So now this is gonna keep going. No. So you are accurate we did butcher that one. Do you, do you guys now remember after doing that how to properly pronounce the name?
Unknown Speaker
Yes, I do. You want to hear it?
Jason Moore
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker
Okanamak. Nailed it.
Jason Moore
Okonoma. Crap.
Unknown Speaker
I think it is Okonom. Okonoma.
Jason Moore
I don't know, man. All right, moving on. I wanted to leave. That was supposed to lead into some sort of apology to residents.
Unknown Speaker
I apologize to everyone out there in Okonomiwok.
Jason Moore
Don't you know?
Unknown Speaker
Don't you know?
Jason Moore
Daniel and Bernal says our commissioner decided to make our league into a two quarterback league. With that being said, when it comes to drafting, which is next week, my question is should I draft a stud quarterback with the first three within the first three picks or should I follow the unwritten rule of choosing an RB with my first pick? Thanks for the help, guys. You're awesome.
Conor McGregor
Here's, here's what I would do, would go check out. We did a live two quarterback mock on the show and I think we gave you a proof of life, so to speak, that you can wait on your quarterback, even your first one. And you can and you will end up with an a dominant team because your positions, your wide receivers, your running backs will be such at a higher tier than the rest of the league. I'm not. You can. It's perfectly fine to me if you want to jump in on the first round and grab that quarterback. Okay.
Jason Moore
Or the first three rounds.
Conor McGregor
Yeah, I mean he didn't say he.
Jason Moore
Had to take it in the first.
Conor McGregor
So first three rounds. But to me, let's say I'm at the back of the first and there's just this huge quarterback run. I'm not going to take the, the lower tiered quarterback just because I feel like I, I have to. We've talked about this. Of there was 40 quarterbacks last year that put up a top 12 week. There was more than 40 the previous year. So it wasn't this fluke thing from last year. These are, these are the trends of the pass happy NFL that quarterbacks just produce. So personally for me, I'm still going to wait. It's not like the a single quarterback league where I can wait until the 10th, the 12th round and get a quarterback and I'm perfectly happy. But you know, I can wait until the fourth or fifth round and pull these middle tier guys that I love of Winston Cousins, Tyrod Taylor. These are names that guys are not going to particularly want at the top of the draft.
Jason Moore
All right, Adam in Philadelphia says, how often do you update your rankings for the Ultimate Draft Kit. Thank you. Love the podcast.
Unknown Speaker
Every day, Adam. Whenever we make any kind of a tweak, I mean, if we give a guy a couple more carries or, you know, another reception, anything like that, it's instant. Through our Ultimate Draft Kit, you don't have to redownload something or wait for an email update. It's just automatically the. It's fresh and it's hot. It's new.
Jason Moore
Sounds like lunch.
Unknown Speaker
I'm delicious.
Jason Moore
What lunch would be like.
Conor McGregor
I'm delicious.
Jason Moore
All right, that. That's our cue. Oh, that one got Jason. Jason's.
Unknown Speaker
I really did start to say I'm delicious. Yeah, well, in my defense, I could be. I have a high sodium level.
Jason Moore
Oh, my gosh. In a remote island situation, you're the first to go.
Conor McGregor
If I crash in the Himalayas.
Jason Moore
All right, that does it for today's show. Thanks for listening. Make sure you subscribe on itunes and check out fantasyjocks.com, our studio sponsor for all of your draft boards, trophies, and your fantasy football league needs promo code, ballers.
