Jennifer Sullivan
You're Jessica Sullivan.
Ryan Reynolds
I know. I, I, I.
Jennifer Sullivan
No, you're Jessica Susan.
Ryan Reynolds
You're Jessica Sullivan. The heat is getting to Jen. The heat, the humidity.
Jennifer Sullivan
We're Jessica Mallon. I'm Jen Sullivan. We're on location.
Ryan Reynolds
We are on location here at the Montage Palmetto Bluff. Thank you so much for providing us this incredible studio experience. I'm in my bathrobe. I'm in my spa robe.
Jennifer Sullivan
I'm in my spa robe too. We're both in our spa robe. So we're down here in South Carolina. We thought it'd be so fun to do. Like, have you ever done this? Like, we did this once before. Stryker Sisters, like on location podcast, BlackBerry Farm. It just infuses the whole show with whatever that space is about. And what it's about right now is.
Ryan Reynolds
It'S R and R, baby.
Jennifer Sullivan
R and R. And Southern charm.
Ryan Reynolds
And Southern charm. Yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
And hospitality and porch sitting and some wildlife.
Ryan Reynolds
Just like a lot of wildlife. So yesterday we almost lost our lives.
Jennifer Sullivan
And that's how you're starting this story.
Ryan Reynolds
Jen does not take this seriously. And I am take at any Sirius is a heart attack. So we got on her bikes. Complimentary thank you montage.
Jennifer Sullivan
Okay, everybody who stays here, you get like a bike. And that's how you get around. It has your little license plate on.
Ryan Reynolds
It's the cutest thing because this place is enormous. As Josh, the adorable attendee who greeted us, told us it was bigger than Manhattan when we arrived. Okay. This property is just absolutely enormous. So you need to get around. You can walk around too, of course. But we got on these bikes. We went on a bike ride. Thank you, Josh, Jen, for pushing me to get back on the bike.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah, get out of your comfort zone.
Ryan Reynolds
Get on the bike.
Jennifer Sullivan
I don't find that childlike wonder in your life.
Ryan Reynolds
I got the childlike wonder back. So there I am hauling you know what around the property. And there we are. We're next to a body of water and she's Like Jess. And before I could, like, see what she's looking at, there is the alligator from Captain Hook. Like Peter Pan is basking itself on.
Jennifer Sullivan
The shoreline, like a foot away from the bike path.
Ryan Reynolds
A foot.
Jennifer Sullivan
If I reached out my foot off my bike pedal, I would just.
Ryan Reynolds
Snout. Snout. Yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
And he had his mouth wide open with those teeth.
Ryan Reynolds
He was smiling. He was smiling.
Jennifer Sullivan
He was cooling himself. That's how they cool themselves. But.
Ryan Reynolds
Yes, but he looked happy. He was smiling. Like, his eyes were crinkling at the sides.
Jennifer Sullivan
I almost didn't see it because he was so still.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
And I wanted to make sure to warn you because I thought. I don't know, I thought you might freak out a little.
Ryan Reynolds
I also am not super balanced on the bike right now, so, like, there's a little wavy gravy action sometimes with.
Jennifer Sullivan
My dry your bike legs about you.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. So I could have. I could have gone into him, but I was doing actually really well on the path. Like, it's. Yeah, I was. I caught a flow there, but I. I could have freaked out, but I was excited. But you stopped, and I was like, we need to keep going. And you stopped and you were like, let's take a picture.
Jennifer Sullivan
No, of course I stopped my bike five feet later. Get off the bike to go ridiculous. Go back and look at the. Listen. You don't see an alligator every day from New York City, but I feel.
Ryan Reynolds
Like every picture of somebody, every story of someone dying or being attacked by an animal is like, they stopped to take a picture.
Jennifer Sullivan
I know. How many times have you seen people out at Yellowstone and then they get hit by the buffalo? I was being respect. It was a respectful distance.
Ryan Reynolds
But those guys are fast.
Jennifer Sullivan
I know they're fast, but I also knew he was sunning. He just wanted to say hi and give us a little photo. A little fat mascara photo.
Ryan Reynolds
I was ready to book it. I had my feet on the gas. We're okay, though. We made it.
Jennifer Sullivan
We're okay. Guys, I'm turning Jess into a birder because there's so much nature here. The spa's beautiful, too. We'll get that soon.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, we're talking about the spa in.
Jennifer Sullivan
A second, but I got her to download the Merlin app so she can identify the birds by their song. It's migration season. It's just. It's gorgeous. We thought we deserved a little bit, like, outside of New York City. You can take. Also, by the way, you can take us out in New York City, but you can't take New York City out of us.
Ryan Reynolds
No, I'm like all black, like, paddling around.
Jennifer Sullivan
Like, I haven't seen anybody else wearing black.
Ryan Reynolds
No.
Jennifer Sullivan
I was like, oh, this is a. Our stereotype about New Yorkers is absolutely true. Jess has got on like big black sunglasses and I'm walking way faster than everybody.
Ryan Reynolds
I'm screaming on a bike.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah, but I love the. I love. The hostility is great. Everybody says that about the south and I've traveled in the south before. But just the pace is. It's warmer here. The pace is slower. People take their time. We all complain about like, oh, TikTok the world. Speed of the world. Everything's fast. You know what?
Ryan Reynolds
Not down here.
Jennifer Sullivan
Speed your ass down to low country and you will slow down, I promise you.
Ryan Reynolds
It's been fabulous. It has been absolutely fantastic. And it's just that the beauty of nature. There's nothing compares. Nothing compares.
Jennifer Sullivan
We're wearing our sunscreen, though. We're learning a little bit about skincare while we're here, but we'll get into that when we do the news. But should we just do that? Should we get into it?
Ryan Reynolds
Let's just get into it. Jen, what was your favorite bird so far? You can't pick your favorite bird, but what has really been.
Jennifer Sullivan
The green heron.
Ryan Reynolds
He's like, tell us about that.
Jennifer Sullivan
He sounds welcome to my birding podcast. I feel like the SNL duo where they're like sweaty balls. You know, the.
Ryan Reynolds
Oh, the er, ladies.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah, he croaks like a frog. If you ever hear what you think is a huge frog at a lake, it might be a green heron. It's the weirdest sound. But there's tons of them here, so I've been thrilled with that. Now I can get into the news and we can talk about skincare. That's what you came here for. Listen, there are so many skincare products on the market and you know, I will try most of them once, but for me to use something more than once and make a real habit of it, it's got to work. That's why I love Ritual's Ha. It's a multi step skincare in one daily supplement and it features two of the best clinically studied ingredients shown to minimize wrinkles and hydrate skin. And now it's part of my everyday skincare routine. I got in the habit of taking it daily by putting the cute little purple jar right next to my sunscreen. It looks nice on my vanity and let's be honest, I love that. But once I stuck with the habit, I really noticed a difference in my skin. I am not the only one. In a clinical study, subjects reported an improvement in skin elasticity, glow and radiance in 90 days and ritual HYAC led to a 2.9 times increase in skin smoothness within 90 days as compared to placebo. I also like that they're easy to swallow. The capsules sort of tastes like vanilla. They're not all weird and fishy like some other supplements. Ryan Reynolds
Masterclass.com Fat mascara. All right, everyone, it's time for the news. This is like a very special news segment because not only we live, we're not live or not actually live. We're on location, on location. Thank you. Like I said, I have a very. My brain's not operating at 100% because of the humidity, and we're just relaxing in our spa robes in our rooms right now.
Jennifer Sullivan
If you put a spa robe on me, truly, my brain just shuts down. I feel like it's when you take a baby and you're meant to swaddle them. I feel swaddled right now.
Ryan Reynolds
I do feel a little bit swaddled.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
So we just left like an hour ago, this incredible beauty brunch and then the tutorial session, like a master class with Fatma Shaheen. She's the founder of Skin Design London. I think I've mentioned Skin Design in London on the podcast before we started carrying them at Moda. And by the way, there's like no relation or connection here from Moda to happy accident. Yeah, it's a happy accident. So Moda, if you're jumping into the podcast and you're like, what the hell is Jess talking about? I work at Moda Operandi. I'm the director of beauty there to amazing luxury retailer and I run the beauty there. And we carry Skin Design London in the beauty curation. And I found this formoda a couple of years ago. I don't even remember how I stumbled upon it, but the brand exists in the UK and launched in the US a couple of years ago. And the products are really targeted And I loved a. How results oriented. Every brand should be results oriented, but this is. They're products are hyper specific. So she has something for volumizing skin. It's in the name and it actually.
Jennifer Sullivan
Remember you're talking about. Yeah, you thought the name was. They told you exactly what to do. Because skincare could be so confusing. It was like, this is the plumper, this is the glow, and this is the face bath, which is the cleanser.
Ryan Reynolds
Right. And it like face tight was like, you put it on, it's like, okay, your face is tighter. It was so specific. And then Fatma, who's been this incredible esthetician, like, she's very discreet with her clients, but she works with super A listers, top top models, super models, supermodels.
Jennifer Sullivan
Maybe some that are British.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, A lot of British supermodels, a lot of Oscar winning clients. The products are informed by what she's seen in her practice, so to speak, or in her spa. And then she created the products from there. So I love.
Jennifer Sullivan
And I'll just butt it in and say, and now they're launching at all the montages around the United States. So she made special signature facials for the montages, us being here at one of them in Palmetto Bluff.
Ryan Reynolds
Yes, that's the connection.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
So we had all this time with her. We got to talk with her about skin. We got to learn a little bit. We got to talk about, like, her product development process. And she's just cool and funny and it was. It was a great conversation. So we got to see her do a little treatment on someone and like, see how she thinks.
Jennifer Sullivan
I felt like it was an esthetician school. It was great.
Ryan Reynolds
It was cool. We got to. Yeah, we got to a little, like, play esthetician a little bit. Jen, what did you take away from this experience?
Jennifer Sullivan
I took away. Well, first of all, everybody confirmed that when you're watching somebody get a treatment done, I'm telling you, if you're stressed out, go search on YouTube for somebody getting a facial. You might think this is crazy. You're like, well, I'm not getting the facial. How relaxed were you watching our fellow journalist, lovely guy named Cole get that facial?
Ryan Reynolds
I felt like a bit like a weirdo because I was like, we were.
Jennifer Sullivan
All staring at him and just like watching Marina the esthetician and her little knuckles because they use this knuckle technique. Actually, I should talk. We should talk about the knuckle technique. That was interesting.
Ryan Reynolds
Well, why. But why do. Why do you think we were all relaxed Because I was saying I felt a bit strange because someone's trying to talk to me. And I was like, shh, I'm relaxing. We're watching Cole get, like, I felt my shoulders sink. I felt my eyelids get heavy. I felt truly like something happened to my body watching him get the facial, and it felt almost borderline inappropriate.
Jennifer Sullivan
It's like you feel real connected to the other person in a way not connected to him.
Ryan Reynolds
Like, I wasn't like, oh, no.
Jennifer Sullivan
But it felt like you were. I feel like I'm getting it. Like, I could feel my shoulders go down even though I'm watching the other person get their shoulders pressed on. I don't. It's fascinating to me, but you, you used.
Ryan Reynolds
You got very sciency in the moment, of course. Zapped the romance out of it, Jen.
Jennifer Sullivan
Did I?
Ryan Reynolds
You were, like. You said, mirror neurons.
Jennifer Sullivan
Oh. Oh, excuse me. Excuse me. I was sitting next to Hope, who was the assistant spa director, and she looked over at me and said, absolutely. And she knew exactly what I was talking about. Too much else she talked about that I thought was so interesting. She. I hope she won't mind me saying this, but, like, talked about sometimes clients get such a release from a facial that they cry. She used to be an esthetician. Now she, like, helps run the spot, but, like. Yeah, because there's just this human connection and this release that happens. I don't know. It was fascinating.
Ryan Reynolds
No, no, I, I, I heard. I was overheard you guys talk about something like that, and I wanted to butt in, but I didn't want to. Like, I don't know.
Jennifer Sullivan
But you were too relaxed, kind of.
Ryan Reynolds
No more energy for conversation. Well, I, I know that this is, like, going off for a second. I want to come back to the skin.
Jennifer Sullivan
We got a hot chin for you. Don't worry.
Ryan Reynolds
No, but there was something. Remember we talked about something that went with, like, hip openers in yoga class?
Jennifer Sullivan
Oh, I thought it the same thing. Yeah. That sometimes people cry because the release of the pelvic tension.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. I wonder if there's something, like, analogous with, I don't know, facials or.
Jennifer Sullivan
I said, is there, like, a trigger point that did it? And she said, it depends on the person, but apparently they have one esthetician. Marina, actually, the woman that was demonstrating for us. She's got the magic fingers. Like, more than a few people have said they left her table having had one of those transformative crying releases. And if it's ever happened to you, I. It happened to me once in yoga. I think it's Like a runner's high. It's very endorphins. It doesn't feel sad at all. You just feel like it's just a release. Yeah, it's good.
Ryan Reynolds
No, I could see that also with just like stress, like you carry so much stress in your face or you're like stressed in your.
Jennifer Sullivan
Something clicks and the endorphins hit and the muscles just.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, that's a delightful.
Jennifer Sullivan
You're welcome for that sound effect.
Ryan Reynolds
I was like, do we keep that in or not? So if you're hearing it, you get it.
Jennifer Sullivan
It's asmr. People love it.
Ryan Reynolds
So that was really interesting. Yeah, I mean, that's why I think people go for a spa treatment. They're looking for more than just like, can you clean out my pores?
Jennifer Sullivan
It's like this whole thing experience. She also did say, and this I think is very true, whenever you go to a new hotel or resort or traveling, whether it's for work or pleasure, the flying, the aspect of flying itself kind of really throw your skin for a loop because you get super dehydrated, obviously. And then because of the gas exchange and the pressure in the cabin, your fluid backs up your lymphatics. Like you get, you know how you look kind of puffy when you get off the plane? You look puffy. You just don't look like yourself. And she said within 24 hours, if you can get the to the spa and get a little judging.
Ryan Reynolds
And if you can't, she, she did give some tips. So she mentioned. So the face bath is an amazing product that she sells. And it's a skin design London face bath. It smells like roses. It's gorgeous. It's pink. It's very. It's a aesthetically pleasing, but it's actually a really incredible product. It's very hydrating. It's almost like a gel cleanser. But it's like a, it's like a thick gel cleanser, comes in a pot. So you put a little bit of it on. She used that to like lubricate the skin. And then if you're listening to this, like, make your fist into like, make your hands into like two fists. And then you take your knuckles and then she started. This was like funny like she dragging the knuckles up the forehead. Am I doing it right, Jen? I'm like, I feel like I'm loving.
Jennifer Sullivan
You have to have some slip on your skin. But I think when we do self facial massage, we often use our fingers. She doesn't do that. They do knuckles. So use your own knuckles. And she's like, you want that pressure? And you know what? I'm doing it right now. It feels so much better than the pads of your fingers.
Ryan Reynolds
And I'm not even. I don't have my forehead with the face on.
Jennifer Sullivan
We did put the bath on, but.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, but with that, it's like you feel like the blood rise to the surface more than it's going to.
Jennifer Sullivan
She's going in the center of her forehead, out to her outer eyebrows. And then she showed us, like, your knuckles on either side of your nose. Almost like you're pinching a baby's cheek, but with your own knuckles. And pinching and pulling upwards along the cheekbone. Oh, my God, that feels so good.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. And she said, like, if you have allergies. Yeah. All of that is just.
Jennifer Sullivan
It's allergy season right now. Get that, like, sinus lymph fluid.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. It's not an attractive. Look what I'm doing right now, but it's like it's doing something.
Jennifer Sullivan
And I felt like I was a bad student because I was like, what if you don't have time? She's like, whatever cleanser you use, you have time. Put the cleanser on your face. Warm your face up. Water cleanser. Spend 20 seconds knuckling your face. That's not what she called it, but that's what I'm gonna call it from now on. I'm gonna knuckle my face.
Ryan Reynolds
And then I asked her, I said one more thing. I said, where do people hold a lot of hidden tension? Hidden tension. And then she came over to me and I was like, oh, my God, she's coming up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Like, like, like, come on. Like, I. I wanna feel. I wanna feel it. And she put her hands. She's got good hands, strong hands. And she put them touching the corner of my eye. Like where you would get like. Sorry to be grossed. Like where, like eye boogers. And then just like a little bit above them. Like the kind of deep part of your eye inner socket.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
And she pushed not so hard that it was, like, painful, but she just pushed. There she goes right there.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah. Like between your eyebrows. I mean, that's no surprise to me. It's often where a ferro will form in your skin. Cause you hold a lot of tension. I did ask why, and she said it was like all the things, stress, et cetera. But screens, screens. We're all squinting at these screens all day.
Ryan Reynolds
So the deepest part, right between your eye, like where your eyes meet.
Jennifer Sullivan
Little pressure there.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. And then you can kind of smooth it out almost where you would have contour of your eyeshadow. And then like maybe pinch your eyebrows. Pinch your eyebrows. All of that tension gathers there. It's too much.
Jennifer Sullivan
I thought you asked her because you secretly wanted her to come over and put her.
Ryan Reynolds
I know. I thought everyone in the room was thinking that they were like, oh, what a cheap shot. Like, what a. Oh, I'm so.
Jennifer Sullivan
I'm not sure I understand where. Just come on over here and show me where on my face. Exactly. But that's an easy thing to do if you're staring at the screen all day or maybe you're on your phone or you got stuck in that TikTok or Instagram thing. You're sitting in bed and you just keep looking at the screen and all of a sudden an hour went by and you're like, what have I done? Put the phone down.
Ryan Reynolds
Such a time suck. Yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
Knuckle your face. Put little pressure in that little inner eye socket corner. So good. Feels so good. It was great.
Ryan Reynolds
It was really cool. So very informative. Morning.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah. You can get their facials too. At the Montage. I'm like, whatever. But that actually was the point. We came here because this is a new. A new treatment that they're doing at their properties. But I love getting the treatment. But then what are the little take homes that you could do yourself?
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. And yeah, those products are really specialist. So very cool line. Check it out.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yes.
Ryan Reynolds
Yes.
Jennifer Sullivan
Okay, moving on. Other news item I wanted to talk about. So I don't know if you saw. We talked briefly about Meghan Markle's show because Daniel was in it. Of course.
Ryan Reynolds
Yes.
Jennifer Sullivan
But then a week after it launched, she set up on Shop My, which is an affiliate platform. Actually, Jess and I use it. I use it more. Cause I like how they gather any product we talk about on the show. We put it in our shop My page. Yes. We get affiliate commission on it. You can click over. It's in our episode notes. So like if we mention a cleanser or whatever, you know how affiliate. Everybody knows how affiliate works. Anyway, hers. I could not believe this. But. But after she launched, she actually talked about the two shades of CND shellac. You know that product.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
That she wore in her TV show. And the shades are satin slippers and romantique. So her thing is that she does one coat of each. Right. These are soft gel polishes. I saw it was an article. I think this was in business of fashion. They went through to see how many people were clicking on and then went to the website where the products are sold and measured an 8,000% bump in engagement on that product from her shop. My.
Ryan Reynolds
That's pretty amazing.
Jennifer Sullivan
Like 8,000% more clicks. Now, I'm not saying that's. Everybody bought it. So this isn't like a Taylor Swift level.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
Event where like the Phaseit stickers and they make a million dollars in one day. But it just shows that the power of the recommendations that people like her style. They like her style, they like her fashion, they like her beauty. In fact, I don't know if you know this, Jess. There's a tab on her shop my just of her wedding look. And it's all the makeup Daniel Martin used at her wedding. And my favorite fun fact about Jess Matlin, which I probably repeat way too much, is that a week after Jess got married and had her makeup done by makeup artist Daniel Martin, a week later, Meghan Markle got married and had her makeup done by Daniel Martin. So I like to think that Jess's wedding look was a practice run for Daniel, for Meghan Markles.
Ryan Reynolds
I would like to think that too, but I don't know about that. I'd like to think that Daniel had.
Jennifer Sullivan
A. I had a clear vision from the royal wedding. Anyway, I. I don't. She. Her style is not my style, but I understand it's very popular. So I decided to go on to the beauty tab of her shop, mine. I was curious, does fat mascaras, the products we've talked about here on fat mascara, do any of them overlap with Meghan Markle's recommendations?
Ryan Reynolds
So I'm going to rewind. I think Meghan and I had a very similar makeup look. I gotta ask Daniel. It was very simple and neutral. It was like, very clean.
Jennifer Sullivan
There's this picture of you that Daniel's in where you're sort of leaning backwards and I remember your makeup and I just.
Ryan Reynolds
That was such a great, great.
Jennifer Sullivan
You did a tiny bit more of an eyeliner, a little more makeup, a.
Ryan Reynolds
Little more eye makeup.
Jennifer Sullivan
But the skin was the same. The fresh pink cheeks kind of eye.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. The bruise, it was a neutral lip.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah, yeah. I had a little bit of kidding. I think he was like, you know what? This is good. Megan might want less of that eyeliner. And then. But I'll just do what I did on Jess. Basically, what I'm saying is you should just look at what Jess is wearing on her face and then you're just as good.
Ryan Reynolds
All right.
Jennifer Sullivan
So anyway, I got all like, scientific Y analysis on it as One does as one gen does. And I wanted to see which products are both on her shop, my and ours. Do we have overlap? Does she have good taste? She has some really good picks on there. Like, the girl knows her beauty stuff.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah. She knows what she's doing. And also, people are really prickly. Like, she's very polarizing, you know, but she still moves the needle with. I think there was so much stuff, like, what did she wear in her TV show? Like, what were the Zara pants? What was the Jenny Cannes?
Jennifer Sullivan
Oh, yeah. There's fashion on there, too. But clearly I was more invested in the beauty. And you're lucky we're not a pop culture podcast. Cause I would tell you my opinion on the TV show, but I'm gonna leave that off the show and get onto these beauty pics. Things we have in common. I want to share these with you. Jess, you ready?
Jessica Matlin
Okay.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
Veleda Skin Food.
Ryan Reynolds
Great, great product.
Jessica Matlin
Classic.
Jennifer Sullivan
How many times have we mentioned on fat mascara?
Ryan Reynolds
Tons of times.
Jennifer Sullivan
Can't even begin to tell you. No makeup. Makeup. Remember Victoria Jackson?
Ryan Reynolds
Yes. Oh, my God.
Jennifer Sullivan
No makeup. Makeup. Her compacts. The brand has been relaunched. It's like a. It's almost like a beauty balm foundation. It's like a solid foundation with a sponge. Beautiful products on there.
Ryan Reynolds
Victoria Jackson lives out in Montecito. So I think they're like. I think they're buds, they're friends. Yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
I think they're like neighbors. But, hey, a good product's a good product. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.
Ryan Reynolds
Okay.
Jennifer Sullivan
Classic Lucas Pawpaw. Remember that old gem?
Ryan Reynolds
Oh, my God, what a gem.
Jennifer Sullivan
Do you like it? I like it.
Ryan Reynolds
I mean, I haven't used it in, like, 8 billion years, but, yeah, it's a respected product.
Jennifer Sullivan
I felt like when I thought it was cool and edgy, it was the Cool Girls Lip balm. It's from Australia, you know.
Ryan Reynolds
Yes.
Jennifer Sullivan
It has a nice shine to it. And it's thick, so it really clings to the lips. It doesn't flip and slide. And then just one more that, you know, I've talked about ad nauseum. And we've had the founder on Thrive Cosmetics, their mascara.
Ryan Reynolds
Wow. Okay.
Jennifer Sullivan
Meghan's just like me. See, she likes a tuber. She likes the tuber. Mascara, Tubing mascara. So I just thought it was interesting that as much as you might think she's polarizing, people want to dress and use the makeup that she does.
Ryan Reynolds
I mean, she looks amazing. She looks great. Yeah, she does look amazing.
Jennifer Sullivan
I mean, no wonder a prince Married her.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
Okay. Last thing I wanted to talk about was interesting to me. You know how the media loves to make a big deal out of generational differences. Oh, this generation's doing that, by the way.
Ryan Reynolds
I feel like maybe five people I've heard say, like, I hate when this gen. Like, people don't actually. Is anyone, like, actually making fun of anyone's hair or, like, their socks in casual conversation? I've never heard it happen.
Jennifer Sullivan
Like, oh, you millennials with your high socks. Gen Z wears, like, I think only people.
Ryan Reynolds
Although you and I did have a laugh last night talking about the clothing that. That is very much a marker of a time. But that was us making fun of ourselves. Not like us.
Jennifer Sullivan
We both had, like, this uniform we both wore.
Ryan Reynolds
We called it the Hearst special.
Jennifer Sullivan
I called it the Hearst special when she was at Harper's Bazaar and I was at Mary Claire. It's a pencil skirt, a turtleneck, and a.
Ryan Reynolds
Don't give it away. Don't give it away because it may need to be.
Jennifer Sullivan
I'm bring it back into rotation. No, but the media. And I'm guilty of this. And on this podcast, talking about generational differences and shit. Shifts in the culture between generations and the way they act and these, like, cohorts. As if the people who are born for a whole 10 set of years are all the same. Of course they're not, however.
Ryan Reynolds
They're not. And also there's, like, different ways people aren't all wearing, like, the same exact thing in the same exact style.
Jennifer Sullivan
I know, but it doesn't make a good headline. And then we don't have, like, a trendy story that gets picked up and talked about.
Ryan Reynolds
And then you can't produce 25 stories a day.
Jennifer Sullivan
Exactly. Listen.
Ryan Reynolds
And then you won't make your bonus.
Jennifer Sullivan
And your SEO won't be.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, it just feels like it's feeding.
Jennifer Sullivan
So do you want me not to do my news segment that I just had about this?
Ryan Reynolds
No, Carry on, please.
Jennifer Sullivan
Actually, it's negating it. So here's what it is.
Ryan Reynolds
Okay.
Jennifer Sullivan
There was some noise about Gen Z is not shaving as much their. Their legs as previous generations might have. The beauty trend is changing, and beauty trends do change.
Ryan Reynolds
They do.
Jennifer Sullivan
In 2020, there actually was a dip in sales of razors and shaving cream. But I'm like, duh. Cause we were all at home.
Ryan Reynolds
It was a pandemic. Yeah.
Jennifer Sullivan
And nobody was seeing our legs. And if that. We care to have hairless legs, then it didn't matter because no one was seeing them in 2021. It went right back up. But at the time, the media was like, oh, gen Z, you know, they're growing their hair back. A lot of talk about underarm hair. Cause you'd see more underarm hair in photos of celebrities and things like that. Well, Faron Krentzel wrote for Business of Fashion that she's like, no, no, that just completely disappeared. They love a hairless leg.
Ryan Reynolds
In fact, they love a hairless leg.
Jennifer Sullivan
They love a hairless leg. But what I thought was interesting. I'm gonna quote that she had. She said, you don't need a beauty analyst to tell you the personal care norms are swinging back into more conservative territory. And she equated the act of shaving one's lever or having hairless legs with a conservative sort of worldview and viewpoint, which was like, I get it. Because like, liberal hippie doesn't shave. Like, I get that. But it's. If you go back in history, it's actually funny. If you had a puritanical or a Victorian time. If you told someone, we're shaving our lady parts and we're shaving our legs and we all want dolphin skin and we're gonna be slip slidey, that would be racy and not conservative. Right.
Ryan Reynolds
I could also see it the other way, that Faren's saying, which is just, women need to look conventionally attractive.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah. But I got. I took it to like a historical viewpoint.
Ryan Reynolds
Women wanting to look conventionally attractive for. I'm gonna use this phrase, the male gaze. So it's. I'm more aligned with what Faren's saying. I don't know what like the percentage is of sales dip. I think this is probably a little bit of an overreaction. Cause I can't imagine that there's this tremendous uptick in like, the women are shaving. The women are shaving. Like, you know, conservative beauty trends are.
Jennifer Sullivan
Back and the women are shaving.
Ryan Reynolds
I do feel like there's probably a little bit of a story that people want to tell right now about more conservative values, like being reflected in the beauty world. Because it does kind of tie up nicely. But I do probably think that is happening. But I feel like I read one and then I read like 10 the.
Jennifer Sullivan
Next day stories about that. The conservative beauty trends.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, I'm sure it is true. But I feel like I'm seeing a lot of stories suddenly pile up. So I would like to see more data about the shaving thing.
Jennifer Sullivan
Okay, Okay. I like it. Data.
Ryan Reynolds
I'd like to see more data. I think that's a very fair request.
Jennifer Sullivan
No, I agree. Because I think it's what you said, which is like all the journalists kind of jump on. They see it gets clicks because people love clicking on a story like that where it's tying the beauty culture to the greater, you know, society's culture. Yeah.
Ryan Reynolds
And I think people are really, really upset. And I think. And rightfully, I think people are really. It's a very sensitive moment right now.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah. So she pointed out, actually, she talked to the founder of Sugared and Bronzed, which is that chain of. It's not waxing, it's sugaring. So you're using the sugar based. I still call it a wax, but to pull off the hair. Sugaring, to remove hair on the legs. And then, of course, self tanning. And they're seeing a 40% bump right now. They don't tie it to the conservative thing we were just talking about. They tie it to the season. Obviously, it's festival time. People are going out, they're showing their legs, like at big music concerts and things like that. And their legs have been under wrap.
Ryan Reynolds
Right. So, like, of course, like in 2025, there is going to be an uptick.
Jennifer Sullivan
In sugar and Bronzin.
Ryan Reynolds
Right. I know there's a lot of people who are interested in getting not, hopefully not tanning bed, but like, spray tans. I could hear that a lot. People going to get. We were talking about this last night. We're talking about, like, getting lasered and waxed and all that stuff. So it's just like something that a lot of women are talking about right now. So.
Jennifer Sullivan
Yeah. And I don't think it ties with your political views or your economic views or your social views. I think it's just some people like a clean skin, some people don't. I guess some people make it as a political statement, like broad.
Ryan Reynolds
But I think that overarching, like, people are framing things through that because of everything that's happening right now. And I think that's completely understandable. So, journalists, if you're hearing this and you're saying you're missing the big picture. I'm not. I'm just saying I understand why you're looking at that, but I don't know if every story is necessarily a reflection of that or like a happy coincidence. I don't know.
Jennifer Sullivan
That's why I like our podcast, because I feel like sometimes we get to talk about, is this one reflective of the large culture or is it just people like Pink Blush right now.
Ryan Reynolds
Right. Or maybe they are the same, but I Can't say without seeing the data.
Jennifer Sullivan
That's right. She's holding out four. The data. All this to say the kids are still shaving their legs.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, I know. Like, I've never spent this much time talking about shaving legs in my life. But I shave my legs. Do you shave your legs?
Jennifer Sullivan
My legs, I got lasered years ago and they don't really grow hair anymore. So I'm assuming the lasering works.
Ryan Reynolds
You get lasered?
Jennifer Sullivan
I got my legs lasered over the course of two years.
Ryan Reynolds
I got laser hair removal, like, 20 years ago. Spent so much time and it never worked. So it's like I'm very.
Jennifer Sullivan
Did you have red. You said you had red hair.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, but I'm so skeptical about laser because I just feel like the amount of time I sunk into that.
Jennifer Sullivan
Oh, it was a two year commitment. It was like every six weeks, all in all, to get no hair on my legs. I would say I had eight treatments, eight to 10. But I don't have to shave now and I don't really grow hair.
Ryan Reynolds
I guess you could say I spend time shaving, but it's just like, I.
Jennifer Sullivan
Also don't mind the act of shaving, actually. I still see my knees still get a little hairy. I just like the gliding of it. It's so slippery and like you're doing an everything shower. And I actually find it quite enjoyable. I don't know.
Ryan Reynolds
You can come over and shave my legs.
Jennifer Sullivan
Okay, we'll do that after we finish this podcast. All right, let's go.
Ryan Reynolds
So weird.
Jennifer Sullivan
Spa time. Okay, let's go raise some wands. Okay. You know the fat mascara listeners, me and Jess, we love sunscreen. We don't always agree on products, but we definitely agree on Blue Lizard Australian sunscreen. They have the products for sensitive skin. That's me, always. They have products that are safe for the entire family. Jess has a little one. It's just the perfect line for both of us and probably for you, too.
Ryan Reynolds
Here's why we love Blue Lizard. They're experts in mineral sunscreens for nearly 30 years. And their products, they go on like a dream. I love the sprays because mineral sunscreens, they're a little tricky with sprays. And these go on really easy. They apply. Apply really nice and really sheer. And I find a lot of people don't want to use sunscreen because they say I'm too sensitive. Well, not with this. No more excuses. I like to carry the little sticks around because they're so easy to put in a backpack or just my purse when I'm walking around the park with my daughter I just take it out and I just pop it on. Boop boop boop for her face, her legs, her arms. Great for touch ups.
Jennifer Sullivan
They have so many formats. Go to blue lizardsunscreen.com to find out more information, which sunscreens are right for your family and where you can buy in store or visit the Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen store on Amazon on this year I want to make Mother's Day extra special for my mom. That's why I'm giving her a unique heartfelt gift that'll truly make her feel loved. I hope so Mom. It's called Story Worth.
Ryan Reynolds
I actually did this with my mom and it was so much fun and I have to tell you felt very close to her. It was really nice. Each week StoryWorth emails your loved one a memory provoking question that you get to help pick questions like did you ever get in trouble in school? Ryan Reynolds
Okay, everyone, it's time to raise a wand. We've got one from Laura. Laura totally understood the assignment. We were asking folks, if your hometown had a scent, what would it smell like? So, Laura, take us away.
Laura Licata
Hi, Jess and Jen. This is Laura Licata from Orange County, California. And I was just calling because you guys were talking about fragrances from your hometown. And I grew up here in Orange County, California, and I wanted to give a little. A little scent profile of what I think my hometown would smell like. Now, obviously, Orange county is known for its citrus, which is why it's called Orange County. But I think a little citrus note, a little orange and lemon be, like, the top note for sure. But then we're also really close to the coast, and a lot of Orange county is made up of the beach and beach cities, so I think some type of, like, salty, oceany, watery scent would be amazing as well. And then for, like, maybe the bottom note, we have a really big, like, diverse community here in Southern California, and especially in Orange county, we have a lot of Hispanic population and East Asian population. And so I really think it'd be cool to have a little bit of a spice going on in there, too. Maybe some type of Tajin or cumin or something a little spicy, something like a little interesting on the bottom there, or may even like a little cardamom or just some spice, Maybe a few different ones. But that would be my perfect scent for my hometown of Orange County, California. But thanks again for the amazing pod. You guys are awesome, and I love to give questions. I just had to weigh in. Awesome. Hope you guys have a great day. Bye.
Jennifer Sullivan
I love that. I love that.
Ryan Reynolds
Thank you so much for, like, not only putting thought into the homework, but, like, really giving us a scent that I would want to wear and a pyramid.
Jennifer Sullivan
I mean, we didn't just get the blend. We got the top. We got the heart. We got the bass notes. Well done, Laura.
Ryan Reynolds
I know, I know. If anyone else wants to shout at their hometown, like, we're still. Just because Laura did it doesn't mean that you can't too.
Jennifer Sullivan
I know. Don't feel silly. I think it's beautiful. I feel like we should appreciate more where we're from and the heritage of the place we're from and the people that live there and all the different things they bring to it. Oh, what would the low country smell like where we are right now?
Ryan Reynolds
It'd be thick. It'd be balmy.
Jennifer Sullivan
Azaleas are in the air right now.
Ryan Reynolds
The azaleas are in the air.
Jennifer Sullivan
It's gorgeous and floral. Actually, my Raisa wand kind of ties into this. Shall I go first?
Ryan Reynolds
Go.
Jennifer Sullivan
Remember Mandy Aftel?
Ryan Reynolds
Of course. Remember Andy Afdel? Yes.
Jennifer Sullivan
Remember Mandy Unforgettable, former fat mascara guest, gorgeous natural perfumer, curator of her own museum of scent in California. She launched these. Okay, let me get the name right, everybody. Hold on, hold on. Let me get the name right. They're bookmarks, but I don't want to mess up the name. Bibliocents. Bibliocents. It's a set of four bookmarks in this beautiful little box. Paper, no plastic in your life. $15 each, a scratch and sniff with a different scent from her archives and a book print, like an old fashioned vintage looking print of that ingredient. And she sent. Did she send you one? Jess did.
Ryan Reynolds
She did. She did. They're really nice.
Jennifer Sullivan
So sweet that she sent them to us. I was like, this would be the best gift. First of all, it's $15.
Ryan Reynolds
I was thinking it's super.
Jennifer Sullivan
It's a great gift for Mother's Day. If there's a reader in your life, say you want to get someone a book and you're like, but how do I make the book seem a little bit more special or even. You don't get them the book.
Ryan Reynolds
They're nice on their own.
Jennifer Sullivan
They're nice on their own. So I have the ginger one right now in the book that I'm reading. What is the book that I'm reading? Death in her hands. It's Otessa. We talked about her on the podcast Mushfegh. So the bookmark that I picked up first was the ginger one. They smell so good and they keep their scent. I didn't even realize till afterwards that they're actually scratch and sniff. So, like, if this as the scent becomes less. But you know how, like, books already smell so good and then you equate the particular scent with the book that you read. And I feel like I remember the book better.
Ryan Reynolds
That's nice.
Jennifer Sullivan
It's like a multisensory experience. I remember when my. So my mom's a first grade teacher when she would teach the letters. She would get all five senses involved. And I remember helping her like brainstorm, see what's C. They made cookies, they listened to classical music. You know, like all those senses involved help you remember things better. And I don't know, bringing fragrance into reading. Like, what's not to love?
Ryan Reynolds
I love that. A multi sensorial.
Jennifer Sullivan
And I thought there's like, it's a gifty time. There's grads, there's dads, there's moms, get them some.
Ryan Reynolds
It's a heavy gifting period, I'll tell you that.
Jennifer Sullivan
I'll link to it in the show notes. What are you raising a wand to, Jess?
Ryan Reynolds
I am raising a wand to a leave in conditioner, which I really wish I brought here because I gotta tell you, the hair is wild. The hair is wild.
Jennifer Sullivan
It's a lot of humidity in Lillo Cottage.
Ryan Reynolds
A lot of humidity. So this is what I wish I brought. This is what I've been using at home lately. The brand is commenced now. You may remember Commence because we had the founder, Brooke Shields on our podcast. I got the three in one leave in conditioner. It is very lightweight. It's. It's like a lotion more than. It's not spray. It's like a light lotion. And I just put a little bit in my hands. You can use it on like damp hair. But I always forget, so I just put a little bit.
Jennifer Sullivan
Oh, you put it in dry.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, because I just forget like, just.
Jennifer Sullivan
Go to sleep with like use this directed. Everyone use this directed.
Ryan Reynolds
But you can put it in dry nose. It says like you could put it.
Jennifer Sullivan
On three in one.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, you, it's, you could just put it on like however you like. Okay, that's.
Jennifer Sullivan
I think that's your kind of product.
Ryan Reynolds
You're like, that's my kind of product.
Jennifer Sullivan
Make it easy.
Ryan Reynolds
It's a three in one because it tames frizz, it softens your hair and it also gives you a little shine. And remember that she created this hair product for like, like hair that's changing, basically not 20 year old hair. So I like that she has that approach to it, that expertise. So I know it's going to work. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and I really like it. So it's $26. Also the packaging is fabulous. It's pink, it's cute.
Jennifer Sullivan
I'm rebranding like, you know, people called like the change. It's like menopause. I'm rebranding it for a hair thing because it's Absolutely true. My. There's been seasons of my hair. The texture has changed every seven years. I swear to you.
Ryan Reynolds
Yeah, the text changes and you.
Jennifer Sullivan
And sometimes it happens and you don't realize it and you're still using the same products from like five years ago, but you have a whole different head of hair now. And if the color changed but you're dying it so it looks the same. But assess the hair you have right now. It changes.
Ryan Reynolds
I know. Yeah, the hair is changing. I'll be real.
Jennifer Sullivan
Okay. The three in one.
Ryan Reynolds
So I'm really into it. I love it. I love the versatility. Check it out.
Jennifer Sullivan
Check it out. Raise a wand. Oh. I would say get your beauty sleep, but instead, what could be like the spa version?
Ryan Reynolds
Jenna, her and I are going to go take nap.
Jennifer Sullivan
Oh, spa nap. Get your spa nap. Get your beauty sleep.
Ryan Reynolds
Create your own spa. That's what we'll be doing when we get home.
Jennifer Sullivan
Oh, I'm gonna be knuckling the heck out of my face. And I'm sure Fatma doesn't want to call it that, but, you know, that's what I'm doing. Get your beauty sleep and we'll see you. We'll see you soon.
Ryan Reynolds
We hope you enjoyed the show.
