We're in one of its most famous cities, in a neighborhood filled with hardworking residents, including lots of first responders. A fireman and his young family move in next door to a widower and his two teenage sons, where, unfortunately, tensions arise almost immediately. The firefighter works shifts and needs his rest. He craves peace and Quiet above all. But peace comes at odds with the boys who love to have their friends over for basketball and socializing. It's a clash of lifestyles and values that sets the stage for an escalating conflict on one of the nation's foremost holidays. No one could have foreseen the blood drenched finale to come. This is fear thy neighbor. Fireworks on Fury Lane. Just a short drive from downtown Cleveland, Ohio, is old Brooklyn, a neighborhood that still looks and feels exactly as it did when it was first built. Here's Cleveland resident Don Walsh and journalist Mansfield Fraser.

Old Brooklyn in itself has kind of been stuck in a time warp. I mean, all the way from the buildings to the people. Just nothing really changes in old Brooklyn.

It's a typical middle class, smaller homes, older homes. Very typical of Cleveland.

[Janiece]

For Terrance and Regina Huff, Skylane Drive is now home. He's a firefighter, and she raises their son Ethan. Lawyer Jack Hildebrand describes the first responder, Terrence.

[Lawyer Jack Hildebrand]

He was a hard worker. I knew firefighters and worked with him. You know, I was never afraid to go into a difficult situation.

[Janiece]

Detective Joe Bavenzi is with the Cleveland Police Department and has lived in this neighborhood for years. He's one of the first to greet the newcomers.

[Terrence Huff]

Hi, I'm Joe. Nice to meet you. Actually, my wife and I, we live right across the street. Nice to meet you, Joe. So fireman, huh? So the residency rule brought you guys here? Yeah, yeah. I mean, it sure narrowed down the options.

Lawyer John Costco explains the city ordinance that brought Terrance to Skylane Drive.

The residency rule in Cleveland at that time was that all safety forces had to reside in the city of Cleveland.

The Huffs moved there because he was a fireman for the city of Cleveland and there was a residency requirement in place, so he had to live in the city.

Even if old Brooklyn isn't Terrence's first choice of neighborhood, it does seem an ideal place to raise a family.

Should be a great environment for the little guy, huh? It's a great place for kids.

Immediately next door to the Huffs lives Roland Fechner and his teenage sons, Jacob and John.

[Terrence Huff]

Roland is a Vietnam war veteran and resident of Skylane Drive for two decades. His wife perished in a terrible accident when the boys were little.

[Lawyer John Costco]

His wife died on Interstate 77 when they were going underneath the Harvard Avenue bridge. The defendant threw a basketball sized rock over the bridge. It went right through the Feightner windshield. It hit Mrs. Feightner right in her lap. It crushed her organs. That's how much force it had.

[Donald Walsh]

He was very devoted to his family and to keeping a roof over their heads.

[Terrence Huff]

Hey, Roland. Come over and meet your new neighbors.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Hey, how's it going?

[Terrence Huff]

Good. How you doing? I'm Terry. Roland. Nice to meet you. Cop.

[Donald Walsh]

Steel worker.

[Terrence Huff]

Oh, even tougher. These are my boys. Jacob, John. Nice to meet you. Listen, really nice to meet you both. I've got to get off to work. Be good. See you boys. I don't know how he does it, working those long hours, raising those two boys.

Mr. Fichner worked at the steel mills, I believe. Ran a crane for steel mill. And he was very strong, very dedicated.

Once they settle in, a typical evening for the Huffs means a quiet family dinner.

These yards are right against each other. When you play basketball in the backyard, it goes over the fence. Usually the neighbors don't give a damn. But he let it be known that he didn't like this at all. Obviously, basketball does make a lot of noise. When he was home, he didn't want them playing basketball.

[Narrator/Commentator]

I can kind of understand. I like my peace and quiet. Everyone does. And you should have. And you're entitled to peace and quiet. You should not have to be disturbed all the time by loud neighbors.

[Janiece]

Today, the game eventually turns into a party that sets Terrence off.

[Terrence Huff]

Hey, there he is. Oh, my God. Turn the radio off. I said turn off the radio. Okay. Easy, Terry. My kid's sleeping right up here. Have some respect.

Roland arrives home from work to see his neighbor seething.

[Terrence Huff]

Roland, get over here. Tell your boys to keep it down. Okay? What's going on? I work shifts. I need some peace and quiet. Okay? Do you understand? Okay.

[Lawyer Jack Hildebrand]

Terry. Being a firefighter, he worked 24 hours on, 48 hours off, and needed his rest when he'd get home, and I just don't think that they provided it for him.

[Terrence Huff]

Okay. Okay. You heard him, boys. Let's keep.

Mr. Fichner, that's the last thing he wants, his son being disrespectful to one of the neighbors, especially a neighbor who's a fireman who risks his life to save people.

One time, Terry would refuse to give. Ball came in the yard and he wouldn't give it back to him. He said, you gonna play basketball, keep your ball in your own yard. You're not getting us back. Terry felt that these kids Were doing it to him on purpose, and that's what bothered him.

[Janiece]

Terrence may believe the noise is excessive, but journalist manfield Frazier tells us other neighbors view Jacob and John as just typical teenagers.

If the noise and the kids were that bad, it seems like neighbors all over would have been complaining about the fleischer family. That wasn't the case.

It was only Terence huffman complaining about what these kids were doing.

I don't think that the young people were attempting to aggravate hough. They were just being kids.

Once again, law enforcement comes, but by the time they arrive, the party has moved inside.

[Narrator/Commentator]

[Terrence Huff]

It's a Saturday night. We've got a lot to do.

[Janiece]

Donald Walsh is training to become a cop and knows the issues.

[Donald Walsh]

The police have a lot of stuff to deal with in the city of Cleveland. We're pretty high on homicides, gang violence, drug use. I mean, a noise complaint is very low on the priority list.

That's all you have to say?

[Terrence Huff]

I don't know why she has it in for us.

[Lawyer John Costco]

There was no record of any arrests, of any complaints by any other neighbors on Skylane about the feighteners when Terrence

[Janiece]

gets home from work. This particular evening, things have quieted down, but the noise soon kicks up again.

[Terrence Huff]

This is crazy, Terry. Somebody's gotta do something about this.

[Donald Walsh]

I can sympathize if he was upset because they were making too much noise and keeping his children awake.

[Stamps.com Advertiser]

You stay here.

[Donald Walsh]

I can understand. Things do get frustrating.

[Janiece]

Terrence comes out to put a stop to the racket and sees Jacob bidding some friends goodnight.

[Terrence Huff]

Go back inside. Try asking nicely. What did you say to me, punk? Huh? Who do you think you are? You got a big mouth for an old man. Get out of.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Someone said something to him. He pushed him aside, burst into the house, was screaming and yelling.

[Janiece]

John Fechner is having none of Terrence's outrage.

[Terrence Huff]

Hey, hey, hey. Oh. Get the hell out of my house. You shut your mouth. You've got no respect for anyone. My wife is scared to death because of you, and so is my son. You're the one you should be scared of, you freak.

[Janiece]

What Terrence doesn't know is that the boy's father, Roland, is home. And he doesn't appreciate his neighbor's intrusion either.

[Terrence Huff]

Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa. Have we got a problem here, Terrence? Yes. Oh, yes, we do. You gotta get a better handle on your kids, or else. Hey. Or else what? Nothing gives you the right to come into my home like this. It's late. It's time for everyone to go home. Everyone.

[Janiece]

After the house empties, Roland confronts his sons.

[Terrence Huff]

This has to stop, dad.

It's not like he says.

[Terrence Huff]

I can't handle this, guys. I can't handle it with work.

[Narrator/Commentator]

Make it stop.

[Janiece]

The Fechner boys complain to their neighbor, Detective Joe Bivenzi, about the hostility next door and include an occasion when Terrence shredded a stray basketball.

[Terrence Huff]

Look at this ball. He stuck a knife in it. A knife.

[Donald Walsh]

As any normal person, you're going to try to find out why this person's doing this. Why are they destroying my things?

[Terrence Huff]

Look, guys, just give him time, okay? I'm pretty sure he's gonna calm down. Yeah, right.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Regina would buy the boys a new basketball to foster some sort of goodwill. I think she understood kids will be kids. But Terrence did not.

[Janiece]

Things take a welcome turn for the Huffs when Jacob goes off for his first year of college in Akron. With him gone, things may settle down.

Hopefully that buys us three months.

[Terrence Huff]

Well, we'll see about that.

[Janiece]

For the first time since he's moved here, Terrence is able to relax. Good thing too, because Regina is now pregnant with their second child.

Unfortunately for them, Jacob makes frequent return trips from school.

And on official breaks, John and Jacobs is the official go to destination.

[Lawyer Jack Hildebrand]

All the college boys and girls who vote for college, let's party at Fikeners. It's a great place to party. And they partied Hardy. I think Terry couldn't take it.

Maybe we can find another place to live.

[Terrence Huff]

No. You're gonna have a baby.

There's nothing else to do.

[Janiece]

Time moves on. And Regina Hough gives birth to a healthy baby girl. To support his growing brood, Terrence picks up a side hustle as an armed security guard. And while in training, he meets Donald Walsh.

[Terrence Huff]

Donnie, Terry. How you doing, bud?

[Donald Walsh]

Still. The first time I met Terrence Hough, we were at a gun class. I was fresh out of the Atlas academy and looking to keep my certificate to be able to carry. So I got a job at a ATM company. And he also had gotten a part time job at a similar company.

[Terrence Huff]

Nicely done. It's all about the focus.

[Janiece]

It's clear that Donald's new friend knows how to handle a weapon.

[Donald Walsh]

Seemed like a great guy. He gave me a few pointers on how to shoot. More accurate to get better placement on my targets.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Terrence loved guns. He had 11 guns. He had a carry concealed permit, and he carried a gun all the time, everywhere.

[Janiece]

With him, Terrence is glad to have a shooting buddy and someone to confide in.

[Terrence Huff]

Totally inconsiderate. All right. I mean, they're loud and they're obnoxious. I can't get any sleep.

[Donald Walsh]

You know, all he kept bringing up was how rotten his neighbors were. Never asked him exactly where he lived. All I know is I was happy. That wasn't my community or my area.

[Terrence Huff]

We call the cops almost every night and the cops don't care. It's all up to me, I guess.

[Janiece]

With Terrence working two jobs Regina is left to hold the fort even more often, which means a lot of calls to police.

[Terrence Huff]

Hello.

[Stamps.com Advertiser]

I'd like to report some underage drinking. Honey, they are blasting their music. I called you two hours ago.

[Narrator/Commentator]

Their response time took longer and longer because it wasn't a priority.

Why do I even bother calling you?

[Narrator/Commentator]

I think the Huff family had given up on the police being a solution to the problem.

[Janiece]

Roland Fechner is also sick and tired of his neighbors constantly harassing his sons.

[Terrence Huff]

Terry, you and your wife need to leave my boys alone. They aren't doing anything wrong. Is that a threat, Roland? Why would I threaten you, Terry?

[Narrator/Commentator]

There had been all of this precursor, all of this aggravation, driving him to the breaking. They weren't thugs. The kids were typical American kids. They did what typical American kids do. They played basketball.

[Narrator/Commentator]

And they partied.

[Janiece]

What's fun for the Fechners is hell for the Huffs. And things are only going to get worse. In the old Brooklyn neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. Terrence and Regina Hough can't stand the constant noise generated by their young neighbors, Jacob and John Fechner. At least Terry has found a new friend to vent his frustrations to Donald Walsh.

[Donald Walsh]

He kept bringing up how he was angry with his neighbors, hated his neighbors.

[Janiece]

Lawyer John Costco agrees. Terrence is consumed by his wrath.

[Lawyer John Costco]

He had guns planted all over the house as if he's expecting an attack.

[Terrence Huff]

They're not kids.

I don't care. This is too important than just a baby boy.

The next time Terrence is triggered by commotion from next door, he storms over to shut his neighbors down. This time, he's in for a surprise.

[Terrence Huff]

Hey, hey. Will you shut up? All right. Come on. I'm sleeping right up there and all I hear is your big mouth.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Donnie.

[Terrence Huff]

Hi, Terry. What are you doing here? I'm always here. I've known Jacob since high school.

[Donald Walsh]

Jake's my best friend. Every memory I have has been with Jake. We were close. We were like brothers.

[Janiece]

Terrence is shocked. His confidant from gun training school turns out to be one of Jacob Fechner's oldest friends.

[Terrence Huff]

You know these people? Yeah. Are these the neighbors you were talking about?

[Donald Walsh]

I couldn't believe that the guy lived next to Jake.

[Terrence Huff]

How do you know him? What's he been saying about us? Donnie?

[Donald Walsh]

Yeah, Donnie, what's he been saying?

[Janiece]

That Terence Huff and Donald Walsh know each other and have an exact opposite relationship with the Fechners is a strange twist of fate. And they're about to encounter another twist.

It's the 4th of July 2007, and the residents of Skylane Drive are enjoying

[Terrence Huff]

festivities, getting ready for the big celebration.

[Donald Walsh]

I'm not looking forward to that.

[Janiece]

As John Costco explains, for Terrance, Detective Joe Bivenzi may be the last person in the neighborhood he can talk to.

[Lawyer John Costco]

They're neighbors, and it's not unusual for the firemen and cops to get along, Hoffa told him. I cannot stand these Fourth of July celebrations And Cleveland is notorious for having residential fireworks shows.

[Janiece]

Lawyer Jack Hildebrand relays how Joe tries to convince his neighbor to avoid the inevitable antagonism.

[Lawyer Jack Hildebrand]

Joe talked to Terry and he said, why don't you take your kids to one of the resorts out in Sandusky, It's Kalahari. Or said, you know how you hate these fireworks and they're going to be

[Terrence Huff]

going on, it's going to be loud. You hate that. You know what? I got a better idea. Why don't you tell those brats not to have a party?

[Janiece]

An eerie tension descends on the neighborhood, which Regina Hough plans to escape.

[Stamps.com Advertiser]

You sure you don't want to come?

[Terrence Huff]

Yeah. Come with us, Daddy. No, I need to get some rest.

[Lawyer John Costco]

She literally left the house at 10 o' clock that morning with the kids, going to grandma's house, going out to for lunch, visiting with relatives, friends went to the fireworks show. He was alone in the house all day long. He never came out. Nobody ever saw him come out.

[Janiece]

That evening, Independence Day celebrations light up the sky all over the city while Terrence stews in his rage.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Now Regina Hough return home around 10:30.

[Janiece]

Surprisingly, things are unusually sedate at the Fechner residence. The Huff's neighbors are off cruising somewhere else for now.

[Donald Walsh]

We always used to meet in Old Brooklyn at the Hilltop to watch the fireworks and getting a little, little crowded up there. So that's when Jake decided to say, hey, let's go down to my dad's house.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Regina put the kids to bed. She went down the basement to watch television.

[Janiece]

Around the same time, Jacob and John return home with a posse in tow. Among them are Jacob's girlfriend Valerie Donald Walsh and his fiance and friends Katie Rosby and Bruce Anderson. The partiers load up with drinks and snacks, lay out blankets on the front yard, then pull out the abundant supplies purchased for a memorable Skylane drive holiday light show.

[Lawyer Jack Hildebrand]

And then the fireworks started.

[Terrence Huff]

Jacob. Jacob. Jacob.

[Lawyer John Costco]

The Fightners basically shot off fireworks for about 45 minutes.

[Janiece]

All the while, Terrence Huff's fury is rising, says lawyer John Costco and journalist Mansfield Fraser.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Sitting in the house all day long. He's listening the people have a good time. Music, fireworks.

[Terrence Huff]

Oh, my God.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Now he's fed up.

[Narrator/Commentator]

So we're talking about a very angry man put in a situation that only increased his anger.

[Donald Walsh]

Just before midnight, Jake said, okay, that's it. We've got neighbors start cleaning everything up.

[Narrator/Commentator]

They had shot off all of their fireworks. So the fireworks were over.

[Janiece]

The party may be winding down, but Terrence Huff is winding up now.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Terry decides I'm going to end this my way. It boiled over into the fact that now he's going to settle this on his own terms. And that's exactly what happened.

[Janiece]

He exits his house brandishing a firearm and points it at Jacob.

[Narrator/Commentator]

When Hough came out with the gun, the young man, Jacob said, what are you going to do, shoot me? To challenge a man with a gun? What are you gonna do, shoot me? Now he's gotta prove that. Yeah, I'm gonna shoot you.

[Terrence Huff]

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Janiece]

Katie Rosby has her back turned to the gunfire and mistakes which she just heard.

Jesus, Jake, can you please quit it with the fireworks?

[Donald Walsh]

I still remember her hearing her fall back and hit her head. It was just a God awful sound.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Now they figured out what's happening. It's not fireworks going off behind them. It's people being murdered.

[Janiece]

Bruce Anderson sees Katie bleed out beside him on their blanket and he tried

[Donald Walsh]

to turn and roll out of the way.

[Terrence Huff]

Yeah. Yeah.

[Lawyer John Costco]

He's fired seven shots. He has two left. He calmly starts walking back to his house.

[Terrence Huff]

Please help us. Help.

[Donald Walsh]

Terrence Hough stopped, turned around and drew his gun up. And as soon as he did that, I knew that you know, this is it.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Donnie Walsh, who himself was very familiar with guns, knew what he was doing. He was taking perfect aim.

[Donald Walsh]

I ran to my fiance, pushing her out of the way when I took one round through my arm.

[Lawyer John Costco]

The bullet intended for her chest, hits him in the right elbow, shattering his arm.

[Lawyer Jack Hildebrand]

He probably saved his girlfriend's life.

[Janiece]

Out of ammunition, Terrence returns inside and takes a seat at the dinner table.

Terry, what happened?

[Terrence Huff]

Shot them all, Regina. I shot all those people.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Joe Bovenzi was cleaning up from his picnic. He was outside in the backyard. He heard the shots. He knew it wasn't fireworks before more police arrive. Just like in the movies. He proceeds up the street carefully, gun ready to fire. He comes on the fight in her driveway. He sees three dead bodies.

[Terrence Huff]

Where's the shooter? It was Hov. If you see him, you kill him. Kill him.

[Donald Walsh]

And that's how I feel to this day.

[Janiece]

Detective Bovenzi approaches Terrence's house where John Fechner is yelling through the door.

[Terrence Huff]

Come on, Hoof. Get out of here. Hoof. John. He killed my brother. Joe, I'll handle this. He killed my brother.

[Narrator/Commentator]

I'll handle this.

[Terrence Huff]

I'll handle this.

[Narrator/Commentator]

Joe.

[Terrence Huff]

Go help the others. Regina. Open up.

Terry. I'm gonna let him in.

[Janiece]

Joe enters and trains his weapon on the murder suspect.

[Terrence Huff]

I'm gonna need to see your hands. Show me Your hands.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Terry Venzi is holding him at gunpoint. He doesn't have his handcuffs. And he knows, just like everybody else in the neighborhood knows, this guy's a gun nut. He's got guns somewhere.

[Janiece]

The detective finds Terrence dazed and passive.

[Terrence Huff]

I snapped, Joe. I shot all those kids. I shot them all. Did I kill him, Jacob? No, no, no.

[Janiece]

Meanwhile, Jacob's girlfriend Valerie, a trained nurse, desperately tries to save the life of the man she hopes to marry.

Wake up.

[Terrence Huff]

Look at me. Look at me. Wake up. He's dead. Please, Jacob, don't.

[Adam Grant]

Sorry.

[Terrence Huff]

Hoof.

[Narrator/Commentator]

Hoof.

[Terrence Huff]

Hoof. Get out of here right now.

[Lawyer John Costco]

By this time, the neighborhood, there is a mob out in front of the house, and the police actually park on the street behind Skylane, come through the backyards on that street, go over the fence to enter the house through the back door, and they decide we have to take this guy out through the back over the fence because we're going to have a riot here. And Hough says, I want to hug my children one last time because I'll never be able to hug them again. Okay. I mean, you know. All right. So he hugs his children for the last time. They say, daddy, we love you. I love you guys, but you're never gonna see me again. It sounds like a Hallmark movie or something.

[Donald Walsh]

I just remember the crowds of people. It was just utter chaos, and it was all created by one person.

[Janiece]

John Fechner calls his father Roland at work, who returns home to a parent's worst nightmare. His eldest son, Jacob, has been murdered by Terrence Hough. Jacob's friends Katie Rosby and Bruce Anderson also lay dead. And Donald Walsh suffers a debilitating gunshot wound. At trial, Terrence Huff receives a life sentence without parole. It's cold comfort to those left behind,

[Narrator/Commentator]

the Feichner family, to lose someone suddenly to gun violence. They were utterly devastated in ways that most of us can't imagine, wouldn't want to imagine.

[Lawyer John Costco]

Katie Rosby and Bruce Anderson, their families were devastated. No family's gonna ever recover from that. Donnie Walsh's dream of becoming a police officer will never be realized, as he still had not recovered the use of his arm. Probably never will.

[Donald Walsh]

The months following was just basically consumed by anger surgeries, physical therapy, more anger. That was basically where my life was.

[Terrence Huff]

Yeah, yeah.

[Donald Walsh]

I can still hear after every shot.

[Terrence Huff]

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[Donald Walsh]

Just as loud as the gunshot, almost. I mean, it was just piercing.

[Terrence Huff]

Yeah.

[Narrator/Commentator]

When you see guns as a solution, you don't take the other options. Terrence Hough could have actually gone to civil court. For nuisance, abatement, the noise, and sued his neighbors in court. He didn't take that option. He could have moved. He didn't take that option because he had a gun. He. He saw a gun as the solution to his problem. I think that Terrence was a control freak. I think there was a large element of him wanting control. You're not going to force me to move. It's my house. You can't disturb my peace. Those are very legitimate feelings, but I think most people would stop short of murder. His ultimate fallback position was, I will solve this with a gun.

[Donald Walsh]

He'll never step foot on Cleveland soil again. He's not gonna throw a football to his children. He's not going to walk his daughter down the aisle when she gets married. Was I happy with that? Yes. Would I have been more happy if he was at, you know, somewhere sitting on death row and they gave him a state of execution? I'd have been more happy with that. This has taught me the strength of community with the Fykners, the strength of what one family can deal with and continue to come back from. And at the same time, there's the constant thought of, will this ever happen again? Is it gonna happen in my neighborhood? Just that constant, constant look over your shoulder and double check. And, you know, don't give people the benefit of the doubt until they've proven otherwise.
