Yet some of the most shocking and deadly conflicts we encounter are between everyday neighbors in ordinary neighborhoods. Their seemingly minor quibbles escalate until violence erupts and it impacts an entire community. What makes a good neighbor go bad? We may never truly know, but heed this warning about the terrible things that can happen when even the pettiest disagreements pass the point of no return. And good neighbors become worst enemies. How can you sleep at night when the person you fear or hate the most lives right next door? Nestled in the outskirts of the California desert sits a new suburb that's just been completed. To its new residents, the picturesque neighborhood offers a promising escape from the big city noise and violence of la. The quiet neighborhood is where two young men find themselves living side by side after their families move in next to one another. Even though they're quite different, they become fast friends almost instantly. But a simple misunderstanding leads to a rapid unraveling of the friendship and culminates in a shocking and bloody blowout. Nothing is worse than when your best friend becomes your worst enemy unless he happens happens to be living a few feet away. This is fear thy neighbor poking the bear. If you drive about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles, you'll find the small city of Paris, California, within the stunning Inland Empire. Initially established over 100 years ago as the railway stretched west, Paris has been going through something of a revival lately. Sergeant Jason Trudeau is an investigator for Riverside county and has lived here for years. It's just an older area that's linked to the railroad track back in the days and many places that are growing with the new residential neighborhoods. The sunny, dry climate has made this town a magnet for a new kind of settler. Families that are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of big city life, not to mention the crime of la. The houses in the new subdivision are modest, small homes set just a few yards apart, complete with a short driveway leading to a single car garage. It's the type of suburb that's meant for middle class families seeking a peaceful way of life. In 2017, the Carbajal family is one of the first to claim their home on this quiet, sunny street. Maria and Francisco Carbajal came to Paris in search of quieter, more simple living. Their daughter, Leticia Carbajal, remembers what it was like when they first arrived in the suburb. When my parents first moved out there, there was really nothing there. The Carbajals are a tight knit family that prioritizes quality time. Letitia and her sister Patricia visit their parents often. Meanwhile, their brother Raul still lives with mom and dad. In his mid-20s, Raul is an intimidating sight. Tall, muscular and imposing. But you should never judge a book by its cover. Letitia knows her brother is just a big teddy bear at heart. He was always laughing and trying to make people laugh. His other sister Patricia echoes this sentiment. He had a smile that was from ear to ear, definitely very charismatic, you know, full of energy and just love. Raul was helpful. He was always helpful in any way that he could. And Raul is about to meet another good Samaritan. Alex Aguayo is moving in next door with his parents and younger brother. He is a full time caregiver for all three. Despite being around the same age as Raul, Alex lives a very different life. His longtime friend Nini Matre has known the family for a long time. His brother has down syndrome. Alex's parents were older. Alex took care of his brother and then eventually took care of his parents as well. The second Raul sees Alex unloading the moving van on his own, he steps up to lend a helpful hand to his new neighbor. Oh, let me get that. There we go. Wow. Thank you. No problem. I'm Raul. These are my parents, my sisters. In an instant, a new Friendship is born between the two neighbors. As Letitia explains, the pair hit it off immediately and begin spending a large chunk of their free time together. I thought Alex was amazing. He's such a good, caring person. Alex and Raul became friends right away. I think, you know, they were about the same age. They spent a lot of time together. Pretty soon, Alex begins attending Raul's infamous parties, taking place in the man cave Raul has set up in the garage. It's a place where the sound system is bumping and the drinks are flowing. Neighborhood resident Michael Delgado was a frequent guest of Raul's on the weekends. Other neighbors would come by, and sometimes other acquaintances would stop by. They'd be hanging out. And even though Alex and Raul have become fast friends, they couldn't be more different. Raul's good looks and big personality easily attract him to people, especially the ladies. But Alex is softer, quieter. He doesn't possess the same good looks and easy charm of his new friend. He's shorter, out of shape, shy and awkward. He stands in Raul's shadow. Here's Letitia again. I don't remember Alex having a lot of friends. I don't think he had too much time or opportunity to get out. Great. As Johnson is one of the few friends Alex has. As he explains, Alex's complex and demanding home life make it challenging for him to socialize. He didn't really have a big circle because he didn't allow too many people around him because of his family and his obligations. And that makes Alex especially grateful to find a friend in Raul. Over the next few weeks, the friendship only grows stronger as the two neighbors become virtually inseparable. Many of Raul's friends, like Michael, think Alex is somewhat in awe of Raul. It seems Alex is especially captivated by the way Raul moves through life and social situations with ease, something Alex can never seem to master. I think Alex kind of wanted to, like, be like him, but there was nothing that money can buy. There are at least none of those traits, but he can try. Alex follows Raul's example and sets up a man cave of his own in his garage. Ta da. In fact, he goes out of his way to outdo his friend. You got a lot of sick stuff here. Alex's setup was better than Raul's. He turned his garage into, like a little game room playroom, I guess. Alex seems to be going above and beyond to create a hangout space that rivals Raul's buying lights, electronics, and decor. But not long after the friendship develops, a new element is introduced, one that threatens to change everything. Raul Has a new girlfriend, Monica Ashley. And she's fallen head over heels for Raul. He was quite the character. He had the ability to get you to like him. He definitely loved and loved hard. Hey, babe. Did I keep you waiting? Don't make a habit out of it. Raul's new relationship means he has less time to spend with his new friend. Alex is once again left alone most of the time as his new friend goes out and has a great time without him and some suspect. That's where the problems begin. I feel like he kind of was envious of Raul. And things between the once close neighbors only get worse. When something goes missing from Alex's man cave. His friend gratis tells us what happens next. They was disturbed. Something was missing in his garage. Next thing I know, he's raving all about, you know, how somebody stole his stuff. In particular, Alex is missing a laptop, one he recently purchased exclusively for his man cave. Things get complicated the next day as Alex returns home. As he pulls the house key out of his pocket to unlock the front door, he happens to look over into his neighbor's garage. He's shocked at what he sees. He walks the few feet over to Raul's garage and asks him about it. Did you get a new laptop? Why? I haven't seen mine. So I have a laptop. Why would I grab yours? Wait, are you saying I took your laptop? Alex thought once the laptop was stolen that Raul was the one who did it. Suddenly all of Alex's pent up resentment boils over. You walk around like some gangster who owns the hood. That doesn't give you the right to take what you want. What the hell are you talking about? Oh, look at me. I'm Mr. Tough Guy. Are you a thief or you act like one to impress the chicks? The argument escalates quickly. Push literally comes to shove. And then a fight breaks out. He got into a nice little tussle. Raul, he jumped on Alex and he had him in a chokehold and everything. Raul is much bigger. Bigger and much stronger than him. Under normal circumstances, Alex wouldn't stand a chance. But since Alex was getting ready to unlock the front door to his house when the fist fight first began, he has a surprising advantage. Alex, he had a key in his hand. Neighbor Michael Delgado tells us what happens next. So Alex stabbed Raul in the back with the key. Once Alex stabbed him, he kind of had like a what did I just do? Reaction. And it wasn't just a harmless jab. It was forceful. Strong enough to pierce through flesh. Raul saw blood coming. Coming from his back, he knew that he was hurt. The scuffle causes such a commotion that Maria, Raul's mother, comes running out to see what's happening. Call 911. What happened? Call 911. Okay, okay. Raul's mother calls for an ambulance to help aid her son. But per protocol, the police show up as well. Obviously, if somebody gets stabbed, the cops are going to go, so that doesn't mean you're a snitch. The cops got there because you had to call the ambulance and there was a crime committed. The police are ready to take Alex into custody. But to everyone's surprise, Raul saves his neighbor from going to jail. Would you like to press charges? Nah, no way. Are you sure? Yeah, I'm sure. While attending officers are surprised by Raul's decision, his sister Patricia understands. He told the officers, you know, you can do what you want, but we don't snitch, we don't rat. I'm not doing anything like that. Despite Raul's compassion in not pressing charges against Alex, a bitter feud is brewing. And it shows no sign of letting up. McCrispy strips are now at McDonald's. Tender, juicy and its own sauce. Would you look at that? Well, you can't see it, but trust me, it looks delicious. New McCrispy strips now at McDonald's. Hi, I'm Kristen Bell. The next time neighbors Alex and Raul see each other across the driveway, Alex lets Raul know how he really feels about what happened. You snitched on Me, man? What? You're a snitch. Don't you ever, ever call me that again. You can't really call nobody a snitch. Those are strong words. Those are really strong words. And Alex knows that those are strong words. You got that, huh? Don't you ever call me that again. Get back inside, fat boy. And one final gesture of malice ends the friendship for good. Alex spit at Raul, and Raul spit back at him. Oh, yeah, Friendship was real dud. Oh, man. Alex didn't even want him talking to him anymore. With the friendship gone, hatred and distrust take its place. What makes it worse is that the two young men live side by side, their front doors just a few yards from one another. Only a small fence about waist high separates the two properties. But what can they do? Raul's girlfriend Monica sums it up. Well, you can't force Raul's family to move, right? And Raul's family can't force Alex's family to move. But even though Raul didn't press charges against him, Alex becomes somewhat paranoid about what might follow. He becomes convinced that Raul is planning some kind of revenge. Michael Delgado watched the relationship between the once close neighbors degraded. I feel Alex started thinking that bro was plotting to maybe do something to him. Or I mean, I don't know. Or he was just paranoid. Alex feels like he must watch his back. As a result, he keeps a constant eye on his neighbor. But this constant attention begins to unnerve Raul, who feels like he can't escape Alex's persistent gaze. Here's Raul's sister Patricia again. Raul would say he felt like was he to constantly being watched. He said, I don't know how he knows, but every time I'm here or outside, there he is. Those were his words. It's like this motherfucker is stalking me. On the flip side, those closest to Alex claim the opposite. Alex's friends, like Nini, claim that this was really all in Raul's head. I think that was more so of Raul's paranoia, thinking that Alex was watching his every move. Alex did keep an eye on things, but he did not stalk Raul. Day and night, Raul feels the inescapable presence of his neighbor, who he is convinced is obsessed with him. It appears that both Alex and Raul are becoming hypervigilant, each believing the other is fixated on them. And one night, Raul buckles under the pressure. What the hell? What? Dude, what are you doing, man? Come on out here. Let me put your freaking eyes out. I can't do this anymore. Take it easy. How long do I have to live like this as long as you have to. Do you understand? And we'd say as long as he's your neighbor and you live there, that's how long you're gonna have to put up with it. Hey, you creep. What do I have to do, beat the crap out of you? Leave me alone. Whoa. I can't do this anymore. It's a vicious circle and a self fulfilling prophecy. The more suspicious Alex gets, the angrier Raul gets. And as Raul's rage grows, so does Alex's paranoia. Here's Alex's friends, Greatis and Nini again. He said, man, I can't leave my house. I can't turn my back. I gotta keep an eye on this dude. And Alex would tell us that he was becoming more vigilant. He felt he was protecting his family. Just when it seems the hypervigilance can't get any worse, Alex does something that, as far as Raul is concerned, crosses a line. The next time Raul steps outside, he looks up and sees a lens pointed directly at him. Neighbor Michael Delgado explains. Is that a freaking camera? Alex put cameras up in his house, used the cameras for surveillance to make sure he kind of knew where Raul was at at all times around the property. Here's Sergeant Trudeau again. There was like five or six cameras, and there was one angle that would have covered Raul's residence. But if the cameras are meant to ease the tension, they sadly have the opposite effect. Raul becomes insane with what he perceives as yet another infringement on his privacy. Alex told us he would see him on the cameras and he was just be upside, just mad yelling and screaming towards Alex. Understandably, Raul's sisters are worried about how the increased surveillance will escalate things for their already hot headed brother. So obviously he was watching him. Obviously he was spying on him. Shove these cameras up your ass before I come in there and shove them in there for you. Stop. No, this is ridiculous. You can't. You want him to call the cops? Like it's not worth it? It's not worth it. He'll call the cops, you'll have a confrontation with him, and you're going to end up losing. And it turns out that Raul has a lot to lose. You know what will happen if he calls the cops? No, no, no, no. I'm not going back to prison. I'm not going back to prison. Though he's been on the straight and narrow in recent years, Raul has a troubled past. And if he gets into any more trouble, it could cost him his freedom. Sergeant Trudeau gives us some of his history. His criminal history consisted of past incidents, arrests with drug related offenses. But he had been working. He had been trying to clean up his life. And unfortunately, it's not long before Raul's opponent next door learns of his checkered history. Knowing about Raul's criminal past makes Alex all the more fixated. There is tension festering under the searing California desert sun. More people are pouring into this newly developed neighborhood looking for an escape from the crime and big city violence. They come seeking peace and quiet, but they won't find it. Alex's friend Nini Matre explains, it just wasn't the calm, quiet neighborhood that people were hoping it would be. Now that Alex Aguayo knows about Raul Carbajal's criminal history, he uses it as a weapon. Neighborhood resident Michael Delgado witnessed how this escalated the feud between the former friendly neighbors. Yo, prison bitch, you better lock your doors at night. Who knows what this boy's gonna do? He started kind of throwing that in Raul's face and trying to, like, throw everything that he learned about Raul. He robbed my place. Better watch out for yours. Also in front of other neighbors by, like, yelling it out and trying to degrade him. There's only a certain amount of disrespect a person can take. Raul's sisters, Patricia and Letitia Carbajal, saw the toll this taunting took on their brother. And they believe there is a method to Alex's madness. I think Alex was trying to egg him on, trying to get a reaction out of Raul. Shut your mouth before I shut it for you. I'm scared. I got a record I gotta live with mommy because I can't get a real job. That's it. Yeah, because Raul did have a record. He said, I know this asshole just wants me to get in trouble, you know, he wants me to go out there and just reciprocate everything he's throwing at me so that I could end up in jail. But Alex's friend Nene disagrees with this belief. Alex was not trying to get Raul back to jail. He knew Raul would mess up his own life and end up back in jail eventually. Either way, Alex keeps up the pressure. And since they live side by side, there's no escape. Punk snitch. What's it like on the inside, huh? I mean, a person can only take so much, you know, bullying or just trying to instigate something until, I mean, everybody has a point. Punk. Screw off, man. That's essentially enough to make somebody go crazy. But Raul is not the only one reaching his breaking point. Despite his taunts and aggressive behavior, Alex truly fears his life is in danger. Ever since he stabbed Raul with his key, Alex has been fearing retribution. Alex fears he doesn't stand a chance. He confesses these fears to his closest friends, Gradis and Nini. He actually broke down and said, you know, he don't know how far this is going to go. He said the situation was just getting more out of control and Alex wanted to protect himself and his family. Neighbors on both sides sides of the fence are now terrified of the former friend living right next door. The growing tension only serves to bring out the worst in both Alex and Raul, adding fuel to an ever growing fire. Feeling increasingly threatened and perceiving a disadvantage, Alex goes to great lengths to even the playing field. Sergeant Trudeau, an investigator with Riverside county, explains the next step Alex takes. Alex purchased the weapons from somebody off of the streets. That handgun was not registered to Alex. It was a handgun that was reported stolen out of Texas back in 2011. And then this second gun was a Armalite AR15 and Alex was not going to give up his life. He was going to defend it. As the weeks pass in the California desert, the tension becomes unbearable. Monica sums it up perfectly I don't understand how it went from being friends to having that much anger towards somebody. So it just became a very intense hostile environment. But what can you do? You're living next to a each other. Everyone in the neighborhood is on pins and needles, sensing an ever growing feud and living in fear of what will happen next. And they find out on May 4, 2018. Out here, it's not only the amazing views, but the way time stretches out a little longer and how the breeze hits just right at the summit. It's an otherwise calm spring day, but still Letitia Carbajal knows something is wrong before she even opens her eyes. May 4, 2018 I woke up and I had a very bad pain in my stomach. And I kept telling my husband I just had a really bad feeling. That day. Raoul told my parents he was going to wash his car. It was May, it was hot. So he just went and kind of put shorts on and opened up the garage door. Remember those cameras Alex put up? The ones that were pointed at the Carbajal house and made Raul so angry? They capture everything that happens. Next on the footage, you can see Raul cleaning his truck in the driveway. His back is turned to his neighbor's house. He's using a shop vac with a long hose to clean the interior of his truck. Alex sees Raul and begins to pace up and down his driveway. On the other side of the short fence separating their properties, Sgt. Trudeau explains, Alex is going back and forth and he's looking in the direction of Raul's residence. And then, as he so often did in the preceding weeks, Alex begins to taunt Raul. Hey, what you doing? Both of Raul's sisters, Patricia and Letitia, have watched the video. They describe in heartbreaking detail what happens during the last fight between their brother and his neighbor. Alex keeps coming out, keeps coming out of his house, calling him names. This is repetitive. He's doing this for quite some time. You steal that truck. Alex continues to taunt Raul. Raul does his best to ignore him and continues cleaning out his truck. And then he turns and Raul looks at him. And then he's just like, screw off, man. You know, whatever. You can see, like that's happening. And he's just really trying to make them blow up. Is that the best he could come up with? Alex is trying to get some sort of reaction from Raul, you know, obviously planning something. At least I don't got a record. Couldn't make it on the street, so you had to move in with Mommy and Daddy. If Alex has been trying to find Raul's Tipping point. He may have just found it. He ignored him for a long time. Time. And then finally, I guess Raul couldn't take it anymore. What happens next takes place in a matter of seconds. It starts with one last insult from Alex. Go back to the gutter you frickin rat fat mouth, you son. And as though he was waiting for anything resembling retaliation, Alex jumps at the opportunity to launch a vicious and brutal attack on Raul. Raul pulls out that shop vac hose and he swings it at Alex. And Alex simultaneously grabs the shop vac hose with his left hand, pulls out a handgun and starts to discharge the firearm. Alex grabbed his weapon and then just shot Raul. And then the guy jumps the fence and he's still shooting. You can see Raul run into the garage and Alex goes in behind him. And that's where he emptied his clip. Alex discharged the entire firearm. The commotion on such a quiet street is an enough to bring Raul's father outside the house to see what's going on. And what he sees is Alex standing on his property with a gun. My dad heard the shots. He was following Alex and like with his hands up, like what did you do? What did you do? Completely out of bullets, Alex runs back towards his house, gets in his truck and takes off. But by this time my dad hadn't seen Roland. Raul's father, like everyone else on the street, was keenly aware of his son's growing feud with Alex. Fearing the worst, he frantically runs around in search of his son. And he makes the heart sinking discovery inside the family's garage. The sight breaks him. That's when we received the 911 call. Fourteen bullets have pierced through Raul's body and he's been left to bleed out on the floor of the family's garage. The police arrive at the home within minutes on their police body cams. You can hear them as they enter the garage as well as the voice of a nurse who lives across the street. She rushes over to give first aid to Raul. Where's he at? Right here. What happened? I'm the prestige nurse, but there's no hope. Raul dies in his father's arms. You can hear the father's cries of anguish on the recordings. I get a call at about 11:56 and it's my husband and he says, hon, something happened to Raul. Mijo, mijo. And in the background I can hear the wails of a scream I might like. That sound is like etched in your brain forever. And he's just yelling, which translates to they killed my son. And he's just Screaming. He's just screaming. And you can hear him tell Raul, no medejes. No me dejes. Don't leave me. Don't leave me. The hunt for Alex Aguayo begins. In a panic, Alex tries to ditch the gun. His friend Greatest tries to give us a sense of what was going through his mind as he drove off. I couldn't imagine that it wasn't something that's in him. Alex, he's the most kindest person on the planet. And now he had just took somebody's life. He is not thinking. His heart is racing. So you got all this stuff going on in your head. Why are you trying to run for your life after you even took somebody's life? But he doesn't make it very far. The police quickly catch up with him. Officers, I didn't mean to kill him. Go, move. Responding deputies stopped a vehicle just blocks away from the neighborhood and the scene. Stay there. And detained the suspect of the incident. At that point, I was just defending myself. I was just defending my family. He admits to being the shooter. He starts to make spontaneous statements that he only acted in self defense. He was detained, transported to the station. We end up arresting him for the homicide. As Alex is taken into custody, the devastating news spreads to Raul's loved ones. My mom was at work, you know, when she got the phone call. She fainted. Raul's girlfriend Monica gets the call that changes her life. I was just going about my day and I got a call. I was like, what happened? Just something happened. And he was like, they got him. And I was like, what do you mean? He's like, they killed him. Down at the station. Alex maintains he had no choice but to fire on Raul. He contends that his neighbor was armed and insists he was merely defending himself and his family. What you're about to hear is the real audio from Alex's police interview that took place within hours of the shooting. He attacked me. That was it. I was defending myself. Have you been planning this? The truth is I was assaulted. I defended myself, kept on shooting. I was there. I defended myself. While Raul's family believe Alex unleashed a barrage of bullets unprovoked, Alex's friends understand why he may have felt he was acting in self defense. I think as things escalated, Alex did fear more for his parents. When. And that happens when somebody come around there and it's you or them, it's the only thing you're going to have in your mind to defend yourself. But Raul's girlfriend has a different take on what happened. The guy Just kept shooting. I don't know who shoots somebody like 12 to 14 times. I don't know. I don't. You know, you don't even do that to, like an animal. Neighborhood resident Michael Delgado has his own opinion. Nah, that's all bullshit. You know, Alex just wanted to get rid of Raul and I guess it just led to. To him having to shoot him. Despite his claim of self defense, the footage from Alex's own cameras tells a different story, one that will seal Alex's fate. We learned right away that there was video evidence of Alex's residence that that would have captured the scene. One of his initial statements, what he said was self defense, discharged the weapon at Raul, which obviously the video, when we later got that that was not true. News of the explosive end to the neighborhood feud shocks the burgeoning community. And while the dust of the desert scuffle tries to settle, the rows of suburban houses are left forever changed. I never would have thought it would have ended that way. Alex Aguayo is found guilty of the murder of Raul Carbajal. Ultimately, after the jury trial, he was convicted to serve 50 years in state prison. Unable to deal with the constant reminders of Alex's actions, the Aguayo family moves away. A few short weeks after the murder, Raul's sister Leticia describes the aftermath. Alex's family never came back. They packed their stuff and left. Never saw them again. My parents still live in the home that my brother was murdered in. It was very hard at first. The next day after the incident happened, my mom and some of her sisters and other family members had to clean up the blood. Unfortunately, you know, with my time in law enforcement, we do come into these situations where neighbors are living next to each other and they just can't get along. And this is the worst case scenario where it escalates to a homicide. To this day, the Carbajal family strives to comprehend this tragedy. The two young men initially were such good friends. How could it all have gone so tragically wrong? How could something as innocuous as vacuuming a car's interior result in a body riddled with bullet holes? While a Titian knows it's impossible to make sense of something similar so senseless, she can't help but wonder why the friendship between the two neighbors deteriorated. Alex was a good guy. We would love to know what happened, you know, I mean, for him to change so much, why was he so angry? She may never know the answer. But one thing she does know. Her brother Raul was a great man with a promising life that was taken far too soon. She's decided to use her family's harrowing experience experience as an opportunity to focus on the positive and she's determined to make sure her brother's legacy is remembered. You know, I think I feel at peace knowing that Roland I had such a special relationship and I think that gives me peace, that gives me comfort.
