Her husband Brian, claiming she simply fell overboard and slipped beneath the waves and was lost to the current.
Brian Hooker
Hello, honey. I found a flotation device that I threw to mom when she fell overboard. And they're still out there searching today.
Lyndon Blake
But Lynette's daughter, Carly Ellsworth says her stepdad's story isn't adding up. Her mom's fit, she's strong, she's a good swimmer.
Carly Ellsworth
Why was she swimming away from the boat? Why did she have the key? It just, the story just does not make sense to me. Like, there's also been history of domestic violence in that relationship. So I do believe something might have happen.
Lyndon Blake
As the Coast Guard launches a criminal investigation and authorities close in, the husband's story begins to unravel. Now, with Brian Hooker under arrest, the question shifts to whether Lynette's disappearance was ever an accident at all. I'm Lyndon Blake, and you're listening to. That's so Criminal. That's so Criminal. I have been looking into this case of Lynette Hooker, the missing American, in the Bahamas all day, especially since her husband, Brian Hooker, has been arrested in relation to this case. No charges yet, but he is in custody down there with the Royal Bahamas police. If they press charges, then he will be taken right across the road to the magistrate's court for Arraignment. Let me get you caught up on this story that is tragic. It is painful, especially for the family that knows this couple a little all too well.
Carly Ellsworth
I just want to know the truth. I don't want him to be in trouble. I don't actually want. I just hope this was a freak accident, but I don't want it to just be swept under the rug.
Lyndon Blake
Lynette and Brian Hooker, they are sailors. They're vloggers. They document their journey out in the water. They've been living in the Bahamas, sailing away on their boat called Soulmate. Well, on Saturday, this is according to Brian, they're going out to dinner. They're going to anchor their sailboat and get on their dinghy and go to dinner. Let me describe this dinghy for you because I know you can think in your head. A little tugboat, a little dinghy. This one that they were on, about 8ft long. It's tiny. Looks like it could be an inner tube. They are sitting next to each other shoulder to shoulder, very close to the water. Well, Brian's saying that it was bad weather and that Lynette simply fell overboard Saturday night and he couldn't rescue her. She got swept away in the current. He tried to throw her a flotation device, but it wasn't enough. And not only could he not rescue her, she floated away with the keys to the boat. So then Brian had to paddle back to shore, and he did not get back to shore till 4am that Sunday. And then he said his wife was missing. This sounded like a tragedy at first. These boaters in their retirement life out just enjoying what the world has to offer. And an incredibly tragic accident happened and Lynette fell overboard. Horrible. Well, so a FOX News alert. The husband of a missing American woman, Lynette Hooker, who vanished during a boat trip in the Bahamas, has been taken into custody. That's when Lynette's daughter Carlie got involved. Carly says that Brian, who is her stepfather, not her biological father, waited nearly 24 hours to call her and tell her her mother is missing. And not only that, she said that when Brian called her, he sounded relaxed. Relaxed was a word she used.
Brian Hooker
Hello, Honey, I just got call from Wilson Search and Rescue, and I found a flotation device that I threw to mom when she fell overboard. And so there. That's a. They haven't found her yet, but there's. They can now focus all of their efforts in a smaller area and they're still out there searching today. So I just wanted to update you and let you know I love you. I'll talk to you later. Bye. Bye.
Lyndon Blake
Again, Carly's just not convinced.
Carly Ellsworth
Why wouldn't he drop anchor and look for her? Why did he paddle the other way? If my. If my significant other fell into the water, I'd be freaking out and going after him. Like, I wouldn't just. Bye.
Lyndon Blake
So Carly's had her questions from the beginning, and at this point, she was just wanting help. Well, her wish was granted because now the US Coast Guard is involved. Obviously, I mentioned Hooker's in custody, and more people are looking into this with a critical eye and not just taking the story at face value that her mom, who could swim and who was so familiar with boats and was active, just fell over and floated away.
Carly Ellsworth
Why was she swimming away from the boat? Why did she have the key? It just. This story just does not make sense to me.
Lyndon Blake
I want to bring this up, and I want to make this very clear. This dinghy is tiny. This dinghy looks like literally can only fit two people. It is so close to the water, you can reach your hand over and splash water up. So when this story first came out, people were like, oh, you know, they fell off the boat. They have a yacht. They have a sailboat. This is so tragic. And I was like, no, no, no, no, no. She fell off the dinghy. Hard bottom. The sides of it are soft. Plenty of ropes to hold onto, handles. And so in my head, I'm thinking, you can easily reach over in the water if Lynette toppled over. I mean, if you have quick reaction, you're down there and get. You're right there. That didn't happen. I went to their YouTube page where they documented all their adventures. And there's this one video of Brian going over a bigger boat, literally hanging off the side of the boat to rescue a happy birthday balloon. And after I saw that, I was like, oh, like most people that are on boats, I grew up on boats. I have a boater's license. Things fall overboard often. There was no effort to reach over, to jump out and try to get Lynette. People have told me I would have died for my wife. I would hope that my partner would do the same thing. But that wasn't the case here. Red flag fishy.

From the beginning, let's just, for the sake of argument, say she was driving out of the ordinary. According to the daughter's. You know what she has said? The daughter said he always drives, but let's say he had a couple cocktails or he's feeling seasick for some reason, let's say just for argument's sake, she was the one actually driving. She falls overboard. It still doesn't explain. He said she started swimming to shore. He started paddling ashore. Did he just paddle in a parallel course to her?
Lyndon Blake
But then the more you know, the fishier things get. There's been reports from Carly, the daughter, from other family members that Brian and Lynette had a tumultuous relationship in the past. They've been together for 25 years. Carly, Lynette's daughter, said she's known her stepdad all her life and he immediately replaced her biological dad, part of the family. But her mom and Brian separated several times and as recently as a year and a half ago. And it wasn't these little arguments. Carli said that very recently, about two years ago, she remembers Brian threatening her mom.
Carly Ellsworth
There's history of him choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard.
Lyndon Blake
And Carly's just telling all to these media outlets trying to put attention on this case to make sure justice is served.
Carly Ellsworth
I believe he has a bunch of anger he hasn't processed. I've seen him choke out one of his daughters before and we had to go to court for that and I was only in third grade.
Lyndon Blake
And then you keep digging into their past and you see back in 2015 in Michigan, where they're from, that it was Lynette who was arrested for domestic violence. She spent the night in a county jail. But the warrant was dropped because they couldn't find any proof that it was Lynette that started the argument because both her and Brian made claims that Brian was saying Lynette assaulted me. Lynette was saying Brian assaulted me. So the warrant was dropped because they just couldn't figure out who started the assault. But that was more than 10 years ago. So just this violent past and now you conveniently have Lynette fall overboard in the Bahamas. It's strange.

Lynette's mom has spoken out, too. We're just getting every family member involved. Every family member has thoughts on Brian right now. Who again, arrested in connection with this. No official charges yet. Lynette's mom says this investigation is spot on. Lynette's mom, her name's Darlene. She said that every time she left her daughter and Brian, she would worry. She knew they were out on boats. She knew they were not getting along, that they had a violent past, and it wrecked her.
Carly Ellsworth
But from what I've heard from my grandma, their relationship has been a lot of fighting and drinking lately.
Lyndon Blake
Brian has gotten a lawyer, Terrell Butler. He says that Brian has been cooperating with the relevant authorities and, quote, categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing. And he specifically denies those allegations of potential involvement made by Lynette's daughter, Carly. So just hours before Brian Hooker was arrested Wednesday night in the Bahamas, he posted this on Facebook. And keep in mind, his wife, 25 years missing. He takes the time to type this out on Facebook. And he was very descriptive describing the conditions in which she went missing. You would think in this horrible time, this time of year, grief and uncertainty, you would just. Thank you for the prayers, pray for Lynette to come home. No. Brian posts this. I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident and unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas. Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart. Unpredictable seas, high winds. I mean, to me, he is just setting the stage for it was just horrible weather. And if you're an experienced boater and you know it's gonna be high winds, unpredictable seas, why would you go out for dinner that night? It just seems fishy. There's a lot of suspicion here. Think about your wife is missing. He referred to her in the past tense. And instead of collapsing, he's composing something for social media that makes him look good. I talked to the Coast Guard today, and they are still doing this criminal investigation into Brian Hooker in relation to Lynette and her disappearance. It's sad, though, because it's now a recovery mission. It's been five days out at sea, so the Coast Guard is not calling it a rescue mission anymore. It's being called a recovery mission, which is always a grim label to put when you're holding out so much hope that this person will be found alive. Now, a former neighbor of Brian came to his defense amid all this scrutiny and said that Brian is very abrasive. But he says he does not suspect foul play. In fact, the neighbor said, I still don't believe he did anything, you know, sinister. I don't believe this is foul play. I hope I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong about all of this. But based on what the family's saying, what the daughter's been saying, things are not looking good. I will keep in touch with the Coast Guard on their recovery mission, and I'll let you guys know if Brian Hooker is indeed charged in this case. I'm Lyndon Blake, and you've been listening to that's so Criminal. That's so Criminal.
