forward progress on 31 brought to you by Giordano's Back to school means back to busy between practices, homework and everything in between. Give yourself a break with Giordano's Treat the kids. Treat yourself to Chicago Style Pizza. Everyone can agree on make tonight at giordano's night@giordano's.com or visit your local Giordano's restaurant today. Giordano's the one for Chicago style Pizza I you always try to tell me not to worry, but until we know more about the apparent injury at the first padded practice, they have to safety Kobe Bryant, their big defensive free agent prize of the off season. I am. I'm not going to rest easy until I know he's okay, and at the moment I do not.
E
Well, I'm not very comfortable until I know more, but I'm also not going to panic until I know more. We do know that he was going for a ball in the first padded practice, as you mentioned, and left with an apparent left knee injury. He was taken off on the cart, which has been mentioned by several reporters there on site. They typically use the cart for injuries, regardless of the significance based on the distance of the field back to the facility, so don't read too much into that using the cart. And until the team speaks and tells us clearly what's happening with his injury, I am not going to panic and hope for the best with Kobe Bryant who was replaced by Cam Lewis. Also noted in the secondary that Jalen Jones continues to be the starter in slot nickel.
D
Okay. But anytime we have invoked the cart,
E
I know it's not good. It's not good. But again they reporters made it very clear more than one to say they use the cart because the distance from the field to the facility. So. Yeah.
D
But I'm more troubled by the description of his behavior and his emotion that it sure sounded like he felt like something bad happened.
E
Yeah. Because what was described was him being very emotional while on the cart, slamming his helmet down to the ground as well, trying to walk off the field to start and then went down to the ground. So yeah, it doesn't sound good. I'm going to hold out hope that it is not significant. Something that will keep him out for a long period of time and just hoping for the best. And will refuse to jump to conclusions.
D
No, I, I didn't refuse that. No. You're saying we. You don't represent me.
E
I said I refuse to jump to conclusions. You, my friend, can panic and jump to conclusions. Thank you all you want because I know you will regardless.
D
I'm good at it. It's one of my underappreciated marketable skills is worrying about things beyond my control.
E
Oh. I think it's appreciated at its very, very correct level.
D
Okay.
E
Yes. Okay. Good.
D
Good. I do feel better because I started the morning worrying about Kyle Menung guy because here this guy was. That was bizarre.
E
Disclosed. And then we come to find out it's some. Some type of soft tissue injury. We just don't know what though.
D
But he was in individual drills.
E
Yes, he was. He started practice off with stretching and doing individual things and then eventually got himself into practice. So he was on the field doing football activity.
D
So that's. That is absolutely better than what my. The worst case scenarios that my worries had painted in my mind that he had been abducted by aliens and we were never going to see him again and they were just making up the fact that he just hadn't done that. He was excused from practice or whatever reason because he was floating around Alpha Centauri. But no he's there far as we know. Unless he's a pod person and the aliens have replaced Kyle Manungai with a replica.
E
Yeah. We also do know as far as the running backs are concerned. Roshan Johnson sighting.
D
Woohoo.
E
Is it? Who's Ahmed Salvon Ahmed. Yep. Okay. So also getting opportunities as the Bears need to figure out who was going to be the third running back behind Manung Guy and, and DeAndre Swift. Luke Newman also getting some run at center and, and in third string as the third string center. Also getting opportunities as a backup guard obviously, but good move around, extend that, that center position out a little bit as, as well too. And Braxton Jones getting first team reps with the at left tackle.
D
That's after Amagaji had done some stuff there and I know they're, they're working Benedict and he'd done some stuff at right tackle. Meanwhile, when asked about his contract situation, it sounds like Darnell Wright thinks he's close to an agreement or signing something. He tried to tamp down some worry by basically saying, yeah, I'm going to be a Bear for a long time or I want to be here for a long time. I don't know if that, if that's something his agent wants him saying or if things are progressed to the point where he's just expressing that level of optimism and talk. So.
E
Yeah, because if you remember from what Ryan polls had to say that it takes two sides to make a deal, kind of putting it the onus on, hey, we've got a number out here and they might, we might be a little far off. That's how we were interpreting it at least. And now to hear Darnell Wright's I'm going to be a Bear for a long time. And I, you know, I'm sure call
D
your agent, tell them.
E
Yeah, I would say the agent probably would say, hey, let's, let's tone that back. That's just not how the game's played. And maybe Darnell Wright just doesn't want to play games. But you know, he's, he's a young athlete and maybe doesn't know any better of what to say or what not to say.
D
I don't know. He, he, it sounds like that there is a desire to do a deal.
E
Yes. Yeah, certainly. And that's what we've known. Yes. For sure. So let's get it done so that we stop talking about it and move on to all football stuff. Yeah.
D
And I do, I have been geeking out on some Brack, not Braxton Jones, but some Darnell Wright highlights. There are a couple people who put together some super cuts of, of what he's capable of doing to people and sometimes you don't see it because it's on the backside of a play. Sometimes you do. A lot of it was from a nun guy where he got, he ran through some enormous holes last year, some huge holes. There's. There are a couple videos of what Darnell Wright did to Jalen Carter. I know we mentioned it at the time, but he is, when, when he's got a running start at somebody, they don't have a really a chance. And for him, a running start is like two good steps. And when he, he's able to target somebody, especially at the second level, you're better off turning around and running away because bad things are going to happen to you. You are going to get your. Your dick stepped on. So I'm, I'm excited to watch him play.
E
Yeah. And you don't want to have that happen, so try to avoid that.
D
No, I would prefer not. Yeah, actually, I wake up. That's another thing. I wake up every day hoping that doesn't happen to me.
E
Fox 32. There was a little, little blurb that they put out online about four players, Dan, so far, that have stood out at training camp. This is before today's padded practice. I'm going to tell you the first three. You're going to guess who the fourth one is. That Fox 32, Chicago. Four players that stood out in training camp so far.
D
Okay, my guess.
E
1. Well, I'm going to tell you the first three.
D
Oh. Because I would hide Caleb Williams well.
E
Caleb Williams. Yes, you're correct. Colson Loveland, Colby Bryant were the first three. Who is the fourth player, Dan, that Fox 32 Chicago said has stood out so far at Bears training camp?
D
Jalen Johnson? No.
E
I'll give you two more guesses.
D
Is it a relatively. Is it a starter?
E
Oh, man. No.
D
It's not. DeMarco Jackson?
E
No.
D
Terrell Smith?
E
No.
D
All right.
E
Tyson Bagent.
D
Okay, great. How has he stood out?
E
I don't know. Apparently he's handling. He's handling his opportunities like a seasoned veteran is what they said.
D
Didn't he do that last year?
E
I. I don't know, but it doesn't really matter, Dan.
D
No, I think that's what he always does. I think that's why they trust him as a backup quarterback.
E
Right.
D
He handles his work like a seasoned veteran. And his. He always does his homework. He knows the play calls, etc.
E
So just. I, I would have one suggestion. It's like, watch other people instead.
D
Yes. I like to watch people who I want to see on the field.
E
Yes. Nothing against Tyson Bagen. I just don't want to see him play.
D
No, he shouldn't want to see himself play right now.
E
Unless the bears are up 60.
D
Yes. If he's taking a knee. If they're putting him in to get him to some kind of contract threshold for a clause to kick in for playing time. And he's taken a knee. All good?
E
Yes, absolutely. Because we know the history of Ben Johnson as an offensive coordinator and a head coach. He has never seen his backup quarterback play meaningful time.
D
That is not a streak that he is going to retire with intact.
E
Hey, you never know. He could, he could, he could call it quits today.
D
Please don't. Backpacks are packed, schedules are filling up and somehow everyone is hungry at the exact same time. Yeah, it's back to school season. yeah, just looking at an update on the Kobe Bryant story, no new information outside of some reporters now saying teammates went over to offer their comfort. He did get into the cart under his own power, which is a good thing.
D
Yes. If he had to be lifted in there with a crane, that would be bad.
E
Well, except Kevin Warren would love that.
D
Well, that's right. He just, he'd run out and point at it.
E
He would love seeing the crane out there. My guy Judavian Clowney, he signed and it's not with the Bears, Dan.
D
Oh, no.
E
I met the Houston Texans.
D
That it was with the Texans. Yes.
E
Not the cart, but the Texans.
D
And I get it. I don't think he's a needle mover. I don't think that really changes anything. But I wish him luck. Enough teams kick the tires there. I mean, everybody had a chance to look that thing over. So I would be surprised if he ends up being an impact player. But it's a good name and he's, he's definitely got some football left in him.
E
Yep. And then want us to also follow up on a story over the weekend. Former Chicago Bear CJ gj CJ Gardner Johnson, he went down and at Bill's training camp with what looked like an apparent Achilles injury. And as it turns out now it's a lower calf strain. So he's not, it's not as bad as it as it looked as the trainer, I saw the video trainer was poking around that Achilles and grabbing that. Then he couldn't really couldn't put all full weight on it. And it looked like what would have been an Achilles, but turns out to be a left lower calf strain. One other note on CJ gj, A couple things. I don't know if you saw this about him. He gave $20,000 to one of the Bill's trainers who's in graduate school to help pay off some student loan that she had $40,000 debt and student loan gave her 20 grand. He was like, you know, they're out here keeping us fresh and healthy and safe and ready to go. Why not, you know, return the favor and help her out? So he gave one of the the bill's trainers $20,000 towards student loans and at the same time was also told by his head coach to stop live streaming in the locker room and the training room. Yeah, apparently he was live streaming in the locker room and training room. And Joe Brady was like, hey, dude, stop doing that, please. That'll be enough of that.
D
Yes, that's probably appropriate. Then we or we get back to the who is the the Vikings tight End Vasante Shanko, who was unwittingly had his, his, his pictures of his wiener posted by a teammate was live streaming.
E
Yes.
D
Remember that one?
E
Yes. Yeah.
D
And he's like, man, whatever. Okay. Yeah.
E
What are you gonna do at that point?
D
Yeah, he wasn't embarrassed. I also wanted to note that the Saints wide receiver Jalen Polk has retired at age 24.
E
Yeah. What was that about? Oh, that headline.
D
Less than a week into camp, he had been excused from two practices for personal reasons and then he, he retired.
E
Well, hopefully everything's okay.
D
Yeah, I think so too that this year, normally it isn't really that big a deal when somebody, I mean there's people that retire all the time and you don't hear anything. But usually those people wouldn't start training camp and get ready for training camp and be there and then just kind of up and leave.
E
Yeah. Especially hearing that was excused for personal, personal reasons for two days. So yeah, hopefully everything's okay. It's a different situation than your guy Squirrel White who decided that football wasn't his thing and said whoa, these guys hit pretty hard or whatever his, whatever his reasoning was.
D
Well, the difference being that he was the 37th overall pick two years ago. Yeah, like this, this was not an end of draft guy. This is the 37th overall pick and he never really played because he was on injured reserve with a shoulder injury and then he'd been acquired for a six round pick and a pick swap. I guess I don't know exactly whatever happened with him, but it didn't work out. That is, that, that's a. Unfortunate for the team to have spent a 37th overall pick on a guy who just ends up not interested in playing. Playing.
E
Yeah, I just, I just keep looking for any, any new news here. I don't know when. Anything new about, about Kobe Bryant as well too.
D
Probably after the MRI would be my guess. And no one's saying anything like. So they've done, they've done the field test. That's one thing you have to know about a knee, if it is a knee. Once it is possible for trainers to know what a high likelihood is right now without an mri, they can, they, they what I say drawer test, Valgus test and Lockman's test. And that is that, that is sideways stability, back and forth stability and up and down. Like all the different ways a knee can move. And if it's moving too far in one of those, something's missing.
E
Well, this was tweeted out from K. Adams of, you know, up in Adams she said that Bears wide receiver Roma Dun just told K. Adams that safety Kobe Bryant, quote, should be fine, end quote, after suffering an injury in Monday's practice. Okay. All right.
D
I don't trust what players say.
E
No.
D
Yeah.
E
Not at all.
D
I've. I've learned my lesson with that. We've had players say, he's fine, he's fine, he's fine. And then have multiple torn ligaments and tendons.
E
And, I mean, the only thing that I could take a little comfort from that is that Rome talked to him and he said, yeah, I'm gonna be fine. Not a big deal. And that, you know, obviously, we can't go just off of what Roman Dunes they said, but certainly better to hear that than the. Than the opposite.
D
Right, Right. They say, well, he's. He's never going to walk again. So they have. I'm not going to put too much on it, but. Okay, I'm glad you said that. I'm glad you put it out there.
E
It is.
D
I. It never fails, man. The injury train in this league is never late. And we all talk around it and through it until that train pulls into the station, as it always does, and you spend all that money on an acquisition, and then all of a sudden, you're like, okay, who. Who. Who's. Here's Cam Lewis. There he is. Everybody matters.
E
Yep.
D
Everybody in your roster, all these decisions. Everybody matters because so many people play, including one of your standouts. That. That Fox 32 said in camp so far exists, and that is Tyson Beggis.
E
Yeah. One of the four players that they've noticed.
D
How do they judge that?
E
I don't know, dude. I don't know. But here's a little bit of the baseball news from Ken Rosenthal, saying that the White Sox are acquiring center fielder Brenton Doyle from the Rockies.
D
Okay.
E
He's bad deals. Currently in medical review. Not yet official.
D
Yeah, the medical review. You're going to do medical tests on him, and you're gonna realize he's bad.
E
Can a medical review say bad at baseball?
D
Yeah. Do the doctors, like, come into their white coats and their. Their grim expressions and say, well, our testing is over. I'm sorry. You're terminally bad at baseball.
E
The test just came back.
D
Yes.
B
Yes.
E
It came back bad. Oh, my God.
D
Is ops plus is 51.
E
Oh, I'm sorry. The test was bad. No, no, no, no, sir. No, no.
D
The test revealed you're a minus 0.4 war.
E
All right, well, sorry to bring that up here. On. What is it for progress.
D
What does this person do?
E
Yeah, I don't know. It's not like in. Yeah, it's. Yeah. I don't know.
D
The one thing I want to see though. Did, did Tyson. Tyson Begin went to Division 2? Shepherd University, correct?
E
Shepherd University, correct. Yes.
D
You know who else went there?
E
I'd never heard of it until Tyson Bajan. Who?
D
Brenton Doyle.
E
Oh, seriously?
D
Yes. Oh, he did.
E
Oh, wait a second, let me check my notes here. Fox 32 also says that Brenton Doyle stood out at Bear, so he did.
D
He was drafted out of shepherd university in the fourth round in 2019.
E
Well, I think he's meant to be here then.
D
The Shepherd University. What's Bobcat? Shepherd. Oh, they're probably Shepherds.
E
Oh, the Shepherd. Shepherd Sheep.
D
The shepherd. The Rams.
E
What are they? What's your. I'm say Bobcat.
D
I'm gonna say. Warriors.
E
You're saying Wildcat.
D
No, it's the Ray. It is the Rams.
E
It is the Rams.
D
Okay, there you go.
E
Well, good for them.
D
It should be the Rams because see there, it's Shepherd. So you should be the Rams. Their mascot is JC the Ram. Okay, there we go. So proud day because the White Sox backup center fielder is from Shepherd University. Brenton Doyle.
E
Oh, that's funny. This on Twitter, this handle Bears Nation. They just posted a picture of Roma Dunes. They dressed as a doctor. It says in Dr. Dunes they we trust.
D
Well, we know he's an artist. Right? Because he's already dressed as Bob Ross.
E
Yes, that's so.
D
So we know he's, he can paint and he's also a doctor. And if he says he's going to be fine, we don't need to do any of the tests.
E
And here is Colson Loveland Kon Kobe Bryant quote. He's tough. He's a dog. He's going to be fine.
D
Well, okay, well he doesn't know anything. He just doesn't. He's going to be fine.
E
Yeah, I know but listen, I'm not, I'm not putting any, any, any significant weight into what the players are saying. But the Bears I would hope would stop players from saying those things if they knew something different. Correct.
D
I guess. By the way, the. They've traded right handed pitcher was Mason Adams and infielder Carlos Vielma does Adams is The Sox number eight prospect according to what Jeff Agrest has from MLB.com Brenton Doyle for your number eight prospect and an infielder. Okay.
E
Really? The eighth.
D
The.
E
Wait, the White Sox eighth prospect in their minors. Really?
D
That's what I said.
E
Really?
D
He said according to MLB.com. that Mason Adams is the Sox number eight prospect.
E
That sounds too high to me, Dan. I don't know anything, though.
D
But that's too high, too high to me for a bad center fielder.
E
Yeah. The Guardians also has made a trade for. With the Angels for Joe Adell.
D
Oh, okay. Well, that passes the I've heard of him test.
E
Yes, certainly.
D
All right. I'm very interested to see what this injury means and how they start talking about timetables here, and it's because it's not on offense. Ben Johnson is just not going to worry about it.
E
Ben Johnson doesn't. He wasn't aware of it.
D
He's. He's probably never heard of him.
E
They asked him who.
D
Who. Can you get a different guy to play his position? Okay, good. You guys. You guys get on with whatever it is you do on that side of the ball.
E
Yeah, Ben, he'll take the podium and he'd be like, all right, here's an update on the Kobe Bryant injury. We're just gonna score another touchdown a game.
D
Yep.
E
And we'll be good.
D
So that is essentially it. You guys carry on. Okay. Go get your defensive things. Like, he's. I don't think he has any idea what they're doing over there. He basically tells da, just stop, people. Give me the ball back.
E
Well, no, I don't. I don't think. I'm not going to say. He doesn't. He doesn't know. He knows because that's the kind of leader he is. And. And head coach. He just doesn't care.
D
Right?
E
He doesn't care.
D
No, it's. It's. He's going to score.
E
All right.
D
Do we need 60? All right, we're going to go out and score 60 then.
E
Yeah. They update him. They say, hey, Ben, Kobe went down with a knee injury. Okay, what's next? What's wrong?
D
And Loveland started those comments. It always sucks to see is what he said.
E
Okay.
D
Colson Loveland said, it always sucks to see. That's always part of it. But he's tough. He's a dog. Are you going with Dr. Adunze or Dr. Loveland?
E
I'm gonna go with Dr. Dunes because he seems.
D
Dr. Howard. Dr. Fine. Dr. Howard.
E
Yeah.
D
Not. I'm gonna go with the actual doctors on this one. Which means we wait and I get to worry and I'm allowed.
E
Yes, you can certainly do that. One thing you don't have to worry about, though. What Is you having something fun to do on August.
D
Yeah, you're damn right. You're damn right. If you're saying it's a Tuesday night, it's August 25th. What should I be doing? What you should be doing is coming to Evanston and hanging out with us at Double Clutch Brewing Co. Because we're celebrating one year of 312 sports, thanks to Chicago Window Guys and Double Clutch Brewing. We're calling it first down that you got to say it in Red Cashin's voice because our first year is in the books. First down. Get it? I wanted to call it Parody Machine, but nobody.
E
I wanted. I thought my suggestion was the best.
D
Yeah, your suggestion was we made it a year and nobody's fired yet.
E
Yes. And they said no. They actually frowned upon that one.
D
Yeah, they didn't like that. We're like, no. You know, we want to show sponsors that we can do this and they're not going to get. Is that fine? Whatever.
E
We'll just get.
D
So I thought of first down and you show up six o' clock free. We're going to let you leave with stuff because we're giving everything. We're like every 15 minutes we're going to give away tickets to Snoop Dogg at Ravinia, to Weezer to Lionel Richie. That's the United center. We got 312 sports swag, double clutch Brewing gift cards. We've got. It would have, technically, I have to say, tickets to Northside baseball games. See? Huh. Okay. You know, so we're. We've got that too. And most importantly, we're going to come. It's been a. It's been a really a wonderful year for me, personally and professionally. I'm proud of what we're doing here and I'm immensely thankful. And I don't take anything for granted. The having, you know, building. We're getting. We're moments away, I think, from being a 10,000 subscribers for DBU. We're at 8,000 plus subscribers here on YouTube alone for forward progress. And with off the Ivy and OWC and from the 50, everything we're doing here, I just. I couldn't be prouder of what's gone on in just one calendar year. We're not even a year in yet. Three more weeks and then we're gonna celebrate. So I can't wait to see you there. Come on out, bring your friends and it's gonna be a great night because, you know, without you, we. We can't do it. Yep. Well said. And Dan, it took us less than an hour. We've. We have the newest drop in the newest episode of dbu. Dan Burnson, Unfiltered earlier this morning, we have an answer from John and Palatine.
D
Oh, an answer to the bad anthem.
E
Who sang the anthem at the bowling tournament?
D
Yes.
E
I was so mad when I saw the name come up on, on the email, Dan. So mad that I didn't remember. And you should be embarrassed because this is. It was an all timer.
D
Yes.
E
Coco Taylor.
D
It was Coco Taylor. Chicago Zone.
E
Yes. I was really upset that it was Coco Taylor.
D
It was Coco Taylor. And now Martha Reeves has joined Coco Taylor. Oh, I think maybe surpassed.
E
I think she's surpassed.
D
Oh, Martha. Yeah, Martha.
E
I don't know if Martha. Is Coco still with us? Because if she is, she's very happy today. I don't know because she's off. She's been passed. Oh, way off the hook, Coco. Way off the hook.
D
Coco Taylor died in 2009.
E
Ooh. Okay, well, how old is that anthem?
D
Yeah. But yeah, Coco. Coco no go. Yes.
E
Yeah, it's funny. John from Palatine emailed. It was Coco Taylor at the bowling event. This bnb segment from 2012 has been in my YouTube saved list for over a decade.
D
So we found an old anthem.
E
Yes.
D
In 2012 that she had done. We. I presume she wasn't dead when she sang it.
E
I would hope not.
D
It's a good excuse for it being bad, though.
E
Yes. If her people came out and say, well, Coco was bad because she's dead.
D
Right. She'd been dead for several years before they asked her to sing it and they didn't do a sound check.
E
So thank you, John and Palatine. I can't believe we didn't remember Coco Taylor.
D
Remember Coco?
E
Oh, that's disappointing. We're old and dumb. Yeah.
D
Old, dumb and bad. But that's okay.
E
That's, that's, that's Years two show or anniversary party?

E
Taylor or Martha Reeves anthem if you were to try to talk.
D
Or the Timothy Chalamet Kalshee commercial.
E
Oh, I haven't, haven't seen it where
D
he's at the dentist and he's trying to say it. I didn't, I didn't understand the commercial and I found it bizarre that somebody would advertise by making you think about a painful trip to the dentist. It's usually not a like a positive mental association for your product or service,
E
but hey, yeah, I probably would have skipped that one.
