I mean, if you're a Bears fan, you're thinking forward progress. Come on.
Matt Abaticola
Forward Progress A Chicago Bears podcast with Dan Bernstein and Matt Abaticola on 312 Sports.
Dan Bernstein
We give you Forward Progress here and we are doing that right now. It's a very busy time for the Chicago Bears as we digest these blows of big news that have come in over the last couple days with the DJ Moore trade, the expected Tremaine Edmonds release, and now with every day that goes by, there are going to be all these shoes dropping that there are going to be these announcements of intents to trade various players that will result in the release of these players. And apparently from what I can read, I don't know if it's possible to have spots for seven or eight quarterbacks on your 53 man roster. But from all the rumors the Minnesota Vikings are going to corner the market on not just frozen orange juice, but all of the quarterbacks in the league who are rumored to be going to the Vikings.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, Joe Flacco is going there. Kirk Cousins is going there, Kyler Murray is going there. Malik Willis is going there. Aaron Rodgers, right, Aaron Rodgers might go to Minnesota. Yeah, I think, I think the they might actually Make a trade for Mike McCarthy so they can get Joe Montana to go there as well. Yeah. They may have 12 to 15 quarterbacks in that quarterback room to push J.J. mcCarthy to bring out the greatness that is there deep within J.J. mcCarthy.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. And then there's Geno Smith, who is also going to Minnesota apparently now also available. I will also mention that it's rare that there's a quarterback's name who's available that comes up when I just say I forgot. Did you remember that Anthony Richardson is out there?
Matt Abaticola
I honestly, until you said his name, I didn't know that he was still playing football. I forgotten that he was in the league.
Dan Bernstein
Anthony Richardson, who is the fourth overall pick.
Matt Abaticola
Yep.
Dan Bernstein
Who was at one point referred to as AR15 when he was at Florida and then realized that that was probably a bad look at the time. Now you can do whatever you want. You could just now you could call yourself, you know, drone strike missile guy or whatever and it won't matter. But he's Anthony Richardson who had these physical skills that people said was like, you know, once in a lifetime physical specimen and the most ridiculous arm strength of all time. Hasn't been able to prove he can actually play quarterback. But what if. That's the story we're missing.
Matt Abaticola
What if. Is, is he a free agent right now? Is he. Or is he still with the.
Dan Bernstein
Yes. No, I think they, they cut him.
Matt Abaticola
Okay. So he's, he's a, he's a. Oh, no, no.
Dan Bernstein
He was. They're going to cut him.
Matt Abaticola
He's going to cut him.
Dan Bernstein
Okay. He's been told seek a trade.
Matt Abaticola
Okay. So he's still under contract from the
Dan Bernstein
Colts at the moment, but they've already said once this, once the seek a trade order comes in is when you're, you're, you know, you're going to be gone.
Matt Abaticola
If not, well, I have a great spot for him to go. I think an ideal landing spot.
Dan Bernstein
Minnesota.
Matt Abaticola
Minnesota. 100%. Yes.
Dan Bernstein
Every quarterback is going there now.
Matt Abaticola
I think they should.
Dan Bernstein
Okay. But it is the same thing going on with Geno Smith. They're saying if they can't trade him, they're going to release him. And this always becomes a self fulfilling prophecy because nobody really has a reason necessarily to jump in and offer anything if they're going to let him go.
Matt Abaticola
No, you can't, you can't do that. I think the Bears will learn that with Tremaine Edmonds. Like, oh, go seek a trade. We, you know, we, we love you and appreciate you. Go, go seek a trade. Why Would you trade any cat? Why would you get rid of anything when you could just wait, you know, less than a week? Now you could four or five days and then sign the guy if you want him. Some other notes then too, since we're starting off here. Daniel Hunter signed the one year, $40 million extension with the Texans. And if you saw that Cam Curl, who was a name that was associated with the Bears in free agency, staying with the Rams as he signs a three year, $36 million deal. So that will kind of play and set the market a bit maybe on what the Bears can do with Kevin
Dan Bernstein
Byard and the other name that I saw that Tyler Beatish has agreed to a three year deal with the Chargers worth $30 million. He was released by the Commanders after starting all 31 games there over the last two years. Also, there had been a report that, that he was in Chicago on Tuesday.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, that's what we had heard and well, that's what we'd read or said.
Dan Bernstein
That's what we read. And now as of today, pro Football talk says it's not true. Contrary to published reports, be itish never visited the Bears per a source with knowledge of his situation. Fine with me, by the way.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, no, it's totally fine. I'm just curious how that mistake happens though.
Dan Bernstein
Now. Here's what happens. It's at the this. According to Florio, the timing and wording of the initial report made waves because it created the impression the visit was happening before he'd been officially released by the Commanders. He said, and while tampering is obviously rampant in the NFL, blatant and obvious violations can quickly attract attention. So it sounds like even if you were there, that everybody involved doesn't want anybody to think he was there.
Matt Abaticola
Right. He wasn't there even if he was. Okay, so that, that makes more sense. So he probably was there. But no one will ever cop to it and say that he was there
Dan Bernstein
because, well, if they wanted, if the league office said, you have to show us whether or not your, your, your, your log, your entry log, like they could find out if he was actually there. My guess is he probably wasn't or I, I don't know because they could work out.
Matt Abaticola
My guess is that he probably was. If that was said he probably was there or they met with the Bears but nothing happened and yeah, oh no, this is an issue now. So whatever, I don't think it's going to be a big deal.
Dan Bernstein
I didn't want him anyway.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, he signs a three year, $30 million deal with the Chargers. Another name that I saw. Drake Thomas will stay with seattle. Gets a 2 year 8 million dollar deal. The linebacker Cameron Jordan of the New Orleans Saints will be released. How old is Saint? Say he's 36. He's played 15 seasons, 132 sacks. He is the Saints all time sack leader. Sack machine. Yeah. So he'll be a free agent. But I'm not, not mentioning that for the Bears at all. Just mentioning because it's news and noteworthy. All 132 sacks with the New Orleans Saints. So Cam Jordan will be a free agent.
Dan Bernstein
Give me those Cameron Curl numbers again.
Matt Abaticola
3 year 36 million. Okay, just quick math here. Real quick 3 here. Average of 12 million per.
Dan Bernstein
Dan, what does that mean for Kevin Byard? That's the only reason. I mean curl is obviously decent player but what does that mean we're talking about for buyer numbers? Because it's probably going to be. It certainly won't be three. It might be one in an option at most two. I would think so.
Matt Abaticola
Most two. My preference would be one and an option with some kind of. Or one with no option or one with no. If you would do a one year deal or maybe it's a one year with a, I don't know, like a two or three million dollars buyout for the second year for the team. I think I could see something like that happening. But if we're looking at 12 per for cam Curl, I mean I'm not going any higher. I don't want to go any higher than nine million for Kevin Byard.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Matt Abaticola
Nine, nine and a half.
Dan Bernstein
Okay. I think it. Yeah. And I don't know how much Bayard found that, you know, last year was that he enjoyed himself. I don't know that this is something where he's simply looking for every last dollar or he's looking for commitment and fit and maybe an understanding that this is the best place for him to be as successful as he wants to be. I'm not sure. I know he's a very thoughtful guy who at this stage of his career was. May have other things in mind other than every single last dollar. And that might be the Bear's best pitch. Don't know. Support is available 247 with VRBoCare. We're here day or night, ready whenever you need help because a great trip starts with the right support.
Matt Abaticola
Want to talk more about the trade of DJ Moore? Obviously we know that he's going to Buffalo. The Bears send D.J. and a fifth round pick to Buffalo for a second round pick. Which I think we're all very ecstatic about getting a second round pick in return. I was really first. Okay. There's two things I want to get into. Number one, when the news broke yesterday and we mentioned it and you were talking and you said that his, his three year time with the Chicago Bears is ending, I honestly thought he was here longer than three years. Felt longer than three years, didn't it?
Dan Bernstein
Well, I think because the off season splash, you know, the acquisition in the way that they got him and what that deal meant was so big that it felt like he was, he was here for a while before he even played it down.
Matt Abaticola
I guess maybe, maybe that's what it was, but it felt like longer than three years. And I went back to look at his numbers and I was like, holy shit, it's only been three years. So I was, I don't know if I want to say surprised, but I didn't expect as much emotion from Bears fans that I've seen online and even some comments to us and some emails about DJ Moore's departure from the team.
Dan Bernstein
Good or bad?
Matt Abaticola
Good. It was really, really good. DJ Moore is a very good player. He's a, he's a very good wide receiver. I don't believe that he is a number one wide receiver on a team. He's put up some really good numbers. He's never once led the league in any receiving categories ever. Once in his eight years. And you go back and look through his numbers. 2018, he was 36 overall among all receivers and yards. So first year, 2019, he jumps up to nine. Ninth overall in receiving yards among all receivers. 2020, he was 11th. 2021, he was 11th. 2022, he was 28th in 23. His highest ranking in receiving yards among all receivers was sixth in the NFL with the Bears. 2024, he was 29th. And then last year, obviously we saw with his targets drop and the reimagining the offense with the addition of Loveland and Luther Burden. Roma Dunes. Second year as a wide receiver, he went to 50th among all wide receivers in yards for D.J. moore. So again, a very good player. Looked at some of his comps. Overall comps. Two names that kept coming up, Dan, were Art Monk, who's a Hall of Famer and Mike Evans, who's going to be a Hall of Famer.
Dan Bernstein
Art Monga Comp. Okay.
Matt Abaticola
And it was every year by, by age or by year in the, in the, in the league, Art Monk was a very, was a comp to DJ Moore again as I mentioned a Hall of Fame player. Mike Evans is going to be a Hall of Fame player, but DJ has never led any receiving category ever in his career. A very good wide receiver, I think on a team that is, and maybe I'm completely wrong, maybe he goes to Buffalo and they win a Super bowl with D.J. moore as the number one wide receiver. I just, I don't, I don't see him as a number one wide receiver. Again, he's put up really good numbers. He's like an 80 receiving or 80 receptions, 1100 yard guy on average for his career. Very, very good numbers. To me, he just was never a number one guy.
Dan Bernstein
Well, you have to remember too that it's sort of like starting pitching in baseball and the way we look at the changes in the game and how that's reflected in positions and stats. This discussion sort of be a corollary to the one that we had on DBU today talking about drafts and collegiate wide receiver classes. Now every year they're just disgorging another huge group of talented wide receivers. And the way that the numbers have been inflated that as far as hall of Fame standards, it's obviously going to change. There's going to be all kinds of gaudy wide receiver numbers that don't find their way in. Like, you know, those of us old enough remember a 50 catch season being a lot, a 70 catch season and then, you know, even a hundred met 100. So that's all.
Matt Abaticola
Even now though, Dan, if you're an elite receiver, 100 is the bare minimum.
Dan Bernstein
Right. And that used to be just unthinkable, right, to get close like these Lance Allworth numbers and some of that stuff. So here I have the list in front of me of the players whose career was a similar quality and shape to DJ Moore.
Matt Abaticola
Okay. Throughout the years. Okay.
Dan Bernstein
And I can do this if we can do the eight year list and, or the career list. I think the, I think the career list is a pretty representative cohort of the types of names we're talking about here that I think is actually represents his, his NFL career to this point fairly so for his career. The group is this Dwight Clark, Louis Lips, Derek Alexander, Jarvis Landry, Julian Edelman, DK Metcalf, Danny Abramowicz, former Bear special teams coach Terrence Mathis, Daryl Jackson and Chris Godwin. Those are your comps for a career now through eight years. That list changes a little bit with a couple other names in there. And you tell me what you think of this list. Art Monk is the only hall of Famer the only one asterisk here, that is, that is shown in several of these years.
Matt Abaticola
But through Mike Evans will be though
Dan Bernstein
Ernest Givens, Art Monk, Amari Cooper, Anthony Carter, who had a spectacular peak value. Rob Moore, Stanley Morgan, Mike Evans, Tyler Lockett, Danny Abramowicz and Daryl Jackson. Okay, I think that's right. I think it's about right. I think it's a very good wide receiver, but not. You're not talking a true number one guy all the time his entire career. Undoubted.
Matt Abaticola
Correct? Yeah, and I agree with that and I think DJ Moore is a very good player and I was happy when the Bears had him here. But looking at the situation and where they are now and again, if this was forced because of the retirement of Drew Dahlman or this was something that was going to happen, whether Dolman was here or not, he couldn't be the number the highest paid guy in your offense in 2026. He just couldn't be.
Dan Bernstein
Well, let me give you the bigger reason for that. And this is something that I've been thinking about and it is also something that we discussed a lot last year and that is how the Ben Johnson offense spreads everything out by the nature of it being run properly. If the offense is working, if they're scoring points, you're not targeting one guy. You don't have any favorites. You throw to who's open. And this isn't like, you know, isolations or his turn. My turn feed this guy or back in the. Remember the Randy ratio. Remember how many. Look, look, look at this. Like, like again, let me just give you some of these numbers. Okay? Last year, this is, this is the first year of the Ben Johnson offense. This is what it's supposed to look like. D.J. moore 50 catches, 682 yards. Loveland 58 for 713. Burden 47 for 652. A Dunes A 44 for 661. Zacchaeus 39 for 313. Swift 34 for 299. This, this is what it looks like when you have a distribution not based on who you're targeting, not based on any sort of mythical idea of a number one. It's based on the person who's open.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, no, listen, I agree with you because the numbers are there. It'd be foolish to try to disagree because the distribution is shown throughout the numbers. But was that a byproduct of Caleb Williams, you know, second rookie season, second rookie year, learning this offense and a byproduct of adding two rookies into the Mix. Because I think if you were to go back and look at Detroit, is Detroit dispersed the same way? Like if you had St. Brown on this team, you think he's going to be equally, you know, targeted as the rest of the guys? If you have like a guy like St. Brown, I would think not.
Dan Bernstein
Well, I also think it changed because they lost their primary tight end and tight ends and wide receivers in this offense should be viewed equally and maybe even to the point where if you do have a guy like Swift who's able to catch 34, that, that they're worthy of consideration as well. I don't know the answer to that. I don't know. But I think that if you talked to Ben Johnson, they don't go into any year looking at individual numbers as goals. I think they go in looking at points.
Matt Abaticola
Well, points and team numbers.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, right. And if after the fact, it happens that way, it happens that way because a guy ends up being that good, you know, and sometimes it might just be this like Roma Dunes a only caught 44 of his 90 targets. That's a big spread.
Matt Abaticola
Yes, it is.
Dan Bernstein
DJ caught his 50 of his 85 low this year. He only caught 44 of his 90 targets. Yeah. Now if you even a slight increase there, you're talking about and the fact that this, they're sluggers, they do average lots of yards per catch. These are chunk throws. They're not an efficiency based team looking and hunting for completions. They're hunting for chunks of yards and they're hunting for points. They're not, it's not completions for their own sake. So I would think that there is, even in these numbers, there's a lot of room for, for explosive growth.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, I don't, I don't disagree with that at all. And I think, you know, going back to DJ Moore and seeing a lot of heavy emotion about DJ leaving again, seeing things online and messages on YouTube and messages and emails, I think a lot of that emotion is driven by what DJ did in a couple catches this year against the Packers. And I think that's really where a lot of that heavy emotion is driven from. And were those catches not against the Packers, I don't think we would have seen as much outpouring from Bears fans online and social media and reaching out to us and commenting on shows. If it was, if those were different teams, if it wasn't the overtime catch against the packers that was such emotionally driven and charged for all of us, if it was, even if it was in division still against the Vikings, or the Lions, it wouldn't have meant as much because it was the Packers. And I think in our recent memory, he contributed so much energy and feeling and emotion because it was the packers that his departure led a lot more feeling and strong emotion from people saying, man, DJ Moore came again a very good wide receiver. His more. His most productive years, obviously were with Carolina. Had his best year with Chicago and Justin Fields as the quarterback in 2023, from a yardage standpoint. But I like, you know, there was one comment that was like, well, I don't want to see. I don't want to see you complain, Matt, when there's no number one wide receiver next year. Like, what are you talking about?
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, come on, man.
Matt Abaticola
Colston Loveland. What are you talking about?
Dan Bernstein
Colston Loveland is your number one target. Can we be clear on that too? Right. But.
Matt Abaticola
But just at the end of it, Dan, even at the end, I'm going to say at best, he was my number three guy behind Loveland and. And Burden.
Dan Bernstein
I. But I can't tell you the number of people that I've answered, whether it's just been, you know, walking around or who's who. Now who's going to. The answer? Colson Loveland.
Matt Abaticola
Like, what.
Dan Bernstein
What did you not see? I feel like that there's some things. He's going to be a star. Colston Loveland is a budding star. That's the answer.
Matt Abaticola
And I'm as excited as I am to see that continued growth and development. I am more excited to see Luther Burden and what that dude is going
Dan Bernstein
to do in the NFL also might be a star. I'm not as certain about that as
Matt Abaticola
I am Loveland, but right now, sure, I see that.
Dan Bernstein
But there's. There's no real questions here. I don't think this is situation. Gee, I hope they have somebody who. They're doing this in large part because they're that confident.
Matt Abaticola
Like, that's what I'm trying to understand. Like, what am I missing about the departure of DJ Moore and people being kind of disappointed or upset or nostalgia. Questioning what happens. Nostalgia of what? It's been three years because it's the
Dan Bernstein
Bears and it's Chicago. We do this with everything.
Matt Abaticola
And he had one great year.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abaticola
And it was with Justin Fields.
Dan Bernstein
I know.
Matt Abaticola
So what's the nostalgia?
Dan Bernstein
It's.
Matt Abaticola
It's all driven by the, the packers games. Telling you that's the only logical explanation for it.
Dan Bernstein
Well, it's. I would say that's part of it. I would say there's also A selective memory that goes on in these games. If I were to go through my stack of notes right now for the past, for every game he's played, and look at the number of times I wrote down. DJ M, question mark, exclamation point. It would be a lot.
Matt Abaticola
It would be a lot. And probably more than the, the, the, the significant positive marks.
Dan Bernstein
Well, maybe or maybe not. I'm not, I'm not going to try balance them out or count them up. I'm not making a ledger. But I'm just saying that we, we conveniently tend to remember all of the good stuff and then forget the number. Like, and truth be told, I think you brought this up yesterday regarding Drew Dahlman, that there were a lot of times earlier in the year like, oh, boy, that was, that was a. He got blown by on that one. Or was that his guy? Or was that his guy?
Matt Abaticola
Badly bad snapshot.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, there were a lot of bad, a lot of bad snaps. And it's. I, I'm very loath to do it because it sounds like sour grapes. After a player departs, it's generally the kind thing to do because it's not like he's dead. You know, he's just going to play somewhere else. And it's always good to remember he's
Matt Abaticola
going to a very positive position for himself with a head coach that knows him with a great quarterback on a, you could argue the best in the league or definitely top three in the league, but it's going to a great environment.
Dan Bernstein
It's all, it's the context, too. Part of it is we're not used to being in a situation, oh, why did they, why did they do that? They did it to try to win the super bowl this year. That's the difference, right?
Matt Abaticola
They added a second round pick.
Dan Bernstein
Dude, this isn't like these Blackhawks trades. Are these horrible Bulls trades where you say, oh, why are the Bulls doing this? Because they were late. And then they figure, oh, I guess we'll do this because you don't trust the people doing it. When you're asking, why do the Bulls trade seven people away at the deadline? I don't know. And are any of the people that got back good? No, they're not. And are the draft picks any good? I don't know. We don't have to ask these questions right now. We don't have to say, well, what, what are the Bears do? The Bears are trying to win the 2027 Super bowl, right?
Matt Abaticola
And if the departure of DJ Moore brings you a second round pick another starting player on your defense or offense and all the cap space, which hopefully signs you Tyler Linderbaum. That's the reason why, because you go out, you go out and win a Super bowl in 2026. That's your goal and your objective. How do you best accomplish that? With a starting center that can be here for the next half a dozen years or more, or with DJ Moore as your number three or four target
Dan Bernstein
and at a more fungible position than it used to be? There are a lot of competent, a lot of good wide receivers.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. And again, DJ Moore was a very good wide receiver. Very good. Never led NFL receivers in any category ever.
Dan Bernstein
Can they find another? Can they? And if this means more touches for Luther Burden, that's the Bears giving me what I asked for specifically last year.
Matt Abaticola
Right. Specifically about Luther Burden. But it's more for Colson Loveland as well. Yes, fine. Yeah. Let's say with that extra, that second round pick, you, you bring in a wide receiver that has an impact this year. Great. I'm all for it.
Dan Bernstein
And maybe, maybe they think more of Jode Walker than we know.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. Who knows, who knows where, where that lies as well.
Dan Bernstein
I, that, that is a piece that we really haven't discussed and I don't know the answer to it. You know, he only, he started one game, he got into nine games in various capacities.
Matt Abaticola
Had some significant catches though.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, he was, he caught six of his 10 targets, ended up two, two touchdowns in, in his amount of playing time is pretty productive.
Matt Abaticola
It is very, very productive. So it's just the whole idea of the, you know, DJ Moore and the emotion that was out there. It just, it was kind of surprising to me because you would have, you would have thought that he spent his entire career in Chicago.
Dan Bernstein
That's the way we do things here though. Chicago fans, they fall in love and Bears fans will fall into like, and fall into love with all kinds of people.
Matt Abaticola
And it also to kind of counter enticing pigeon reaction.
Dan Bernstein
Look what happened when people were daring to talk about maybe trading a backup quarterback. I know, come on, dude, you're surprised about DJ Moore.
Matt Abaticola
It's a counter that as well too. I mean, how many times on our post game shows where there was some criticism of DJ Moore were the comments coming in about DJ Moore. And now all of a sudden it's like you'd have thought that all eight seasons were here in Chicago. Is it eight? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. All eight seasons were spent in Chicago and he was a Chicago born guy and you know, he grew up, you know, playing here in the city, and he came home to the Bears, and now he's gone. How can we do this? Well, I'll tell you how we can do it, because your roster is pretty stacked with kids that can catch the fucking ball.
Dan Bernstein
I also was, I will admit, being entertained with the memes of the fake statements that were going around. DJ Moore put a nice statement on social media out. And it was very sweet, very professional, very nice. And somebody changed it around and added the line where he said, I know I took some plays off here or there, but it happens. I was tired. No. And that was.
Matt Abaticola
People believed it.
Dan Bernstein
Yes.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, boy.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. I got a text from, you know, one of my. One of my meatball friends out there is like, I can't believe he would say something like this.
Rakuten Advertiser
Really?
Dan Bernstein
This is how he goes out. And I'm like, yeah, I don't think it's real. Yeah, I don't. I don't think you really said that.
Matt Abaticola
And damn, AI.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I think so. That wasn't even AI. That was just, you know, somebody doing that and posting it up there. But, man, it's like, really, he would do. No, no, he probably wouldn't.
Matt Abaticola
Hey, listen to this. I saw this on NFL.com and this was Zach Koppel. He. He had a. Like, rankings. So he puts out a ranking of each team based on draft capital. Draft capital rankings and then cap space. And so when I first saw this list, the Bears were. See, they were 28th.
Dan Bernstein
Draft capital, draft capital rankings and cap space. Cap space.
Matt Abaticola
So they were 28th. Now with the talk of the release of Tremaine Edmonds and the trade of DJ Moore, they've jumped 12 spots to 16th. Yeah. Yeah. And then just give you an idea, like what. What the top five looks like right now going into free agency. The Raiders and jets tied at 1. Obviously, their. Their draft position very high on that. Titans 3, the Steelers 4 and Kansas City 5. With all the moves they made. Restructuring of Pat Mahomes as well, too. So Raiders, Jets, Titans, Pittsburgh and Casey are top five. Bears one from 28th to 16. So jumped up 12 spots. That's with the trade of DJ Moore, the pending trade of DJ Moore, and the pending release of Tremaine Edmonds.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I mean, that's. They got $44 million.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Like, you can. You can do this in this league. And as long as. And really we should. And I can't believe we haven't said the name yet, but the guy doing the math on all this is Matt Feinstein, and I don't know that he's deciding what the football decisions are as much as just deciding when they want to pay stuff and when they. When they want to have stuff matter and when they don't. Because it's got to matter at some point. But it's how you spread it out. It's when you do it. And if the next thing we watch for is how much of this cap space is there any advantage to having some extensions done before they wade in to outside free agency? Do you want to get your.
Matt Abaticola
Your.
Dan Bernstein
The guys that you know well and you've had exclusive negotiating rights? Would it be better to get that done first and then go outside? Or sometimes the market makes you unable to do that when things heat up, you got to go get what you can get and then figure all that out.
Matt Abaticola
When do you think he gets to sleep again?
Dan Bernstein
Never.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, well, he gets to sleep some point in the season.
Dan Bernstein
No. Better sleep at his desk, man. It's football, right?
Matt Abaticola
He can't ever leave the office.
Dan Bernstein
He can't.
Matt Abaticola
Better not leave. Helen.
Dan Bernstein
You can't have a family or you don't.
Matt Abaticola
Ryan Polls walks into his office and was like, you can't leave here. Then you don't like until May 1st.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. And, and let, let me add this, too, that this is the time of year where there's all kinds of ridiculous headlines out there. Because in large part, this is the, the sports desert time of year, and you can sing it to the most wonderful time of the year if you want. One of these stories got me all excited just because, like, oh, this should be fun. And I saw the headline at CBS Sports, and it said, it said, NFL free agency, bold predictions.
Matt Abaticola
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
And I looked at all the bold predictions and I scrolled down, and there wasn't a single bold Bears prediction.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, yeah, it's interesting. The, the Bears have been, I mean, outside of the, oh, Max Crosby's landing at the Bears. Not, not a whole lot of stuff about Chicago.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. But here, here they were. And I kept like, where's the. Where, where's the Bear stuff? All it says is Aaron Rodgers retires. Steelers replace Rogers with Malik Willis. Colts match offer sheet to retain Daniel Jones. Kyler Murray heads to Vikings. Isaiah likely home to New England Eagles sign Trey Hendrickson. Mike Evans leaves the Buccaneers. Josh Allen gets a weapon in Alec Pierce. Jayleen Phillips stays in the east with Washington. Chiefs add Kenneth Walker. I'm like, okay, and Bears bears me here. Give me something.
Matt Abaticola
So when did this come out? This was obviously before the DJ Moore trade.
Dan Bernstein
No, this was three hours ago.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, oh. So Alex Pierce and DJ Moore.
Dan Bernstein
I guess so. Okay.
Matt Abaticola
Good for them.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. It doesn't say anything about DJ Moore here, but it says it came out three hours ago.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. I don't know if they know he got traded.
Dan Bernstein
Maybe somebody should tell him. Who wrote this? This is. Do we know this person? Tyler Sullivan?
Matt Abaticola
I don't know him.
Dan Bernstein
I don't know him either. He is a CBS sports writer and maybe someone should tell him that they got a different veteran receiver.
Matt Abaticola
Well, that's why it's a bold prediction, Dan.
Dan Bernstein
Right. He'd say it was a correct prediction.
Matt Abaticola
He just said it was a bold one. Also thinks Joe Montana is coming back to play for the Steelers. Yep.
Dan Bernstein
Because Mike McCarthy is going to call him out of retirement for one last roundup at old.
Matt Abaticola
He is. I mean, I, you know, I'm curious to see where Mike Evans lands. I. I love Mike Evans.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, everybody does. I do. He had a collarbone.
Matt Abaticola
I thought he might end up in Buffalo. Actually, that's my.
Dan Bernstein
Pulled my bold prediction now was Mike Evans broken collarbone.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, he had a broken collarbone.
Dan Bernstein
I.
Matt Abaticola
My bold prediction is Mike Evans ends and ends up in Buffalo with Alex Pierce, DJ Moore, DK Metcalf, AJ Brown, Justin Jefferson and that.
Dan Bernstein
That'll do it. And that about sum it up right there. They're done. I think by the time we're here on Monday and talking more about this, we're going to have a lot more Bears stuff. I just, I just think they're moving. It's such a clip. They're. That they're. They have a list of things they want to do and they're not waiting around and they're not allowing other teams yet to dictate a lot of the
Matt Abaticola
stuff that I'll give you my bold prediction.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Matt Abaticola
My bold prediction is on Monday we will be discussing brand new Chicago Bear Tyler Linderbaum.
Dan Bernstein
Say it. Speak it into existence.
Matt Abaticola
I am. Tyler Linderbaum will be a Chicago Bear. And I loved the email that came in that said his name is a Chicago guy's name that we're going to mess up and people are going to call him Lindenbaum or Balm. He definitely has a Chicago name that fans will mess up. Oh, I, I will go over this Lindenbaum guy. He's not as good as I thought he was going to be. Bernstein.
Dan Bernstein
I will go over under that name somehow being misspoken by Dave Wanstead in three different ways.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, yeah, there'll be Lender Bomb, there'll be Linder Balm.
Dan Bernstein
Yep.
Matt Abaticola
This Linder Blam guy. I don't know about this Linder Blam guy that you, you like Bernstein? Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Lynn. Well, because there's Lynn Bloom. Remember in Chicago we've got Lynn Bloom High School. So that somebody definitely will call him that.
Matt Abaticola
So he'll be Tyler Lindbloom. Yeah, I want to talk about this Tyler Lindbloom.
Dan Bernstein
Yep.
Matt Abaticola
Bernstein. You said he was going to be great.
Dan Bernstein
Huh? He learned that one sack yesterday. Oh, yeah. He's not that good. I thought that guy Dillman was better.
Matt Abaticola
That's right. It was funny. The. My. My episode of from the 50 this week, I talked with Chicago sportscaster Mark Giangreco.
Dan Bernstein
Oh.
Matt Abaticola
Had a, had a really, really wonderful conversation with Mark Jean Greco.
Dan Bernstein
It was great.
Matt Abaticola
And knew he was born and raised in Buffalo, but still a huge Buffalo Bills fan.
Dan Bernstein
They all are.
Matt Abaticola
So I, I texted him yesterday. I said, hey, congrats on DJ Moore. And he's, you know, he's like, I hope it works out. I go, it'll be fine. He'll. He'll show up for 75% of your plays. You'll be good to go.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I'm. I like the Buffalo, like I told you. You know, my mom's from Buffalo. She and her twin sister were big fans. Watched every game.
Matt Abaticola
I'll have the. I, I have to check my notes because he gave me like five places you have to eat at when you're in Buffalo. I'll take them down and run them past you. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Was. Was Bocce's Pizza one of them?
Matt Abaticola
Bocce's was one of them. Yes.
Dan Bernstein
Okay. Bocce's really good.
Matt Abaticola
What.
Dan Bernstein
What about. I don't know.
Matt Abaticola
I don't remember anything else.
Dan Bernstein
Duffs.
Matt Abaticola
If it'll make you happy, I'll say yes. He said Duffs.
Dan Bernstein
I just don't recall, you know. What about Marvino's?
Matt Abaticola
Couldn't tell you.
Dan Bernstein
No. Yeah.
Matt Abaticola
Well, I have to kill you. But it stands out when people talk about pizza.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. And, and really the, the first time I took a bite of a pizza where it reminded me at all of Buffalo style pizza was like a, a typical mainstream hand tossed. Like you get like, like a Domino's hand tossed crust. I was like, oh, this is like a Buffalo style pizza. Like, that's.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, that's what it's like.
Dan Bernstein
Okay. It is. It's sort of an airy hand. It's better than, than obviously Bocce. Bocce's is because when I was a little kid and I only knew we only had like local Chicago tavern style every, you know, there. And it was little squares of over oreganated pizza with a sweet sauce. And I remember I would love to get pizza when we would go visit grandma and grandpa. We'd get off the plane, we'd go right. And get wings immediately.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. Where would you guys. Where would your family eat wings either?
Dan Bernstein
Duff's. There was a place near my grandparents in Amherst called Sunnies that I loved and when I was a little kid I would go to because they had an outdoor mini golf thing.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
That I just thought was the coolest thing in the world that you'd go there and you'd get curly Q fries and malt vinegar and you'd get your wings and then we'd play mini golf and it was like that was the best part of going to see grandma and grandpa until we ordered in bocce's
Matt Abaticola
and then that was it. Oh yeah, he did. He did mention Duffs. So from the 50 latest episode, Mark Gene Greco. Matt Abaticola
Well, hey, if anything happens over the weekend, I'll be. I'll be up in Milwaukee for Natalie's cousin's wedding. I'm officiating the wedding as well, too. So we have the rehearsal tonight, and then we have the wedding tomorrow. So if there's any breaking news in the middle of the ceremony, I just. I'll go on my phone. You'll have to set it up, but I'll go live on my phone, like, right in the middle of the ceremony if we need to.
Dan Bernstein
All right, well, you're gonna have to show me how to set it up, but if Tyler happens, I am. I'm gonna take you up on that. If, in fact, that news breaks that we can go on and.
Matt Abaticola
And sell, hopefully something from the. At least the reception. So I can be. My tuxedo, and we can. We can do a live show.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, you're gonna. You'll look like Winston Wolfe, like Harvey Keitel's character in Pulp Fiction. Remember, it's like, six in the morning, and he's at some. He's in a tuxedo at a party in a hotel. Like, I always wondered, what. What was that? Where was he?
Matt Abaticola
The great party?
Dan Bernstein
I. I guess it makes me always kind of want to wear that around, like, a. Like an undone bow tie.
Matt Abaticola
Yes. That's the cool look.
Dan Bernstein
And you're just like, you know, oh, I've been busy at these parties.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, I did. I did a long tie. I did a long. Not a bow tie for the. For. For. For the tux, but I was the. The bride had requested a black tuxedo for me, so. Because I wanted to go Navy. I wanted to do Navy tucks, but
Dan Bernstein
I think she also requested a black husband. I don't know if that.
Matt Abaticola
No, she didn't.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, she didn't. Okay.
Matt Abaticola
She requested Kevin, so she's.
Dan Bernstein
She's good. Oh, I'm not. I'm not sure I agree with your. With your intelligence assessment there.
Matt Abaticola
All right, so other than waiting for Tyler Lindenbloom to get signed by the Bears, what. What else you got going on this weekend?
Dan Bernstein
What do I have going on?
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, it's warm out. There's a thunderstorm here in Libertyville right now. Lightning and thunder and dangerous out there, but it's warm.
Dan Bernstein
It's warm. I'm waiting for this weather system to pass through, and I'm waiting to see what this does to water temperatures, and I'm waiting to see if this begins to activate the first of the fish that might be coming in, because, I
Matt Abaticola
don't know fishing good or bad with
Dan Bernstein
rain, either one, if you know how to play it. If you know what the barometer is doing. It can be either. It can be neutral, it can be good, it can be bad, and sometimes you don't know. And it. But it depends on the wind and the species of fish. I'm sorry that I've already talked your ear off about it.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, I was just.
Dan Bernstein
You wanted me just to say good or bad?
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. And then you talk about barometers and like, fuck, man.
Dan Bernstein
Sorry, nerd. Sorry. But everything kind of matters. Or there are some people who say none of it matters and just ignore all of it. And either your lures in the water or it's not, and somebody's going to bite it or it's not. That's.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. Because you really can't catch anything unless your hooks in the water. You know what?
Dan Bernstein
Believe it or not. Believe it or not. That is actually really, really good advice for people who say, why am I not catching? It means you're not fishing enough.
Matt Abaticola
So when I would fish with my uncle, we used to catch Italian fish all the time because we used salami as bait.
Dan Bernstein
You can.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. And I always thought they were the Italian fish.
Dan Bernstein
You should use those little lupini beans.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, I don't waste those.
Dan Bernstein
Too good.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, I love beans. I know. All right.
Dan Bernstein
Salty.
Matt Abaticola
That'll wrap us up for Ford. Remember, we're waiting for the signing of Tyler Lindenbaum. And when he gets here, Linden, Bloom. Linden, Lindenberg. When he gets here, Dan's dreams will come true. Maybe you can dream about Linderbaum and stop dreaming about school.
Dan Bernstein
Somehow my dream will involve Tyler Lindenbaum
Matt Abaticola
taking a test with you.
Dan Bernstein
Telling me no pants on. Telling me I had a class for which I didn't do the reading. And if I looked at the syllabus, it would say which books, and the books are at the bottom of my locker.
Matt Abaticola
I know your dream. Tonight. I'm going to predict your dream tonight.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Matt Abaticola
You're running down the hallway because you're late for class and there's a test.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Matt Abaticola
You get to the doorway and you can't get in because Tyler Lindenbloom is blocking you from getting in. You have to get past him in order to take your test.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, it's going to be something like that now?
Matt Abaticola
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abaticola
So you have to get past Tyler Lindenbaum to be able to take your
Dan Bernstein
test, to be able to graduate on time.
Matt Abaticola
Yes. And you can't get past him. You won't graduate in time, and you'll have to redo your senior year again. You're making me crazy. That's your dream. That's what you're gonna have. I'm putting that in your brain right now, that is. And then you know who's behind Lindenbaum is Beth. And she's pointing at you and laughing because you can't get in the room.
Dan Bernstein
No, she's actually doing that while I'm dreaming, probably. She's actually sitting up in bed, tapping on her phone, pointing at me and laughing. That would take pictures of you while you're sleeping. Well, I look good. Never know. All right, that'll do it. And if something happens, we'll be live. Stay tuned. Otherwise, we'll be back at you Monday. Forward Progress has stopped.

Date: March 6, 2026
Hosts: Dan Bernstein & Matt Abbatacola (312 Sports)
This episode dives into the seismic roster moves by the Chicago Bears—most notably, the trade of wide receiver DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills and the expected release of linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Dan and Matt analyze what these moves mean for the team's future, fan reaction, and the Bears' ever-shifting cap space and draft capital. They also explore the impact on offensive philosophy, potential future targets (with emphasis on Tyler Linderbaum), and the sometimes-emotional bond between Chicago fans and their players.

On DJ Moore’s Departure:
Name Pronunciation Comedy
Dan and Matt deliver a rich post-mortem on DJ Moore’s Bears tenure, blending analytical rigor with trademark Chicago sarcasm. They reframe Moore’s value in the context of a new offensive system, cap flexibility, and a young, deep receiving corps, while poking fun at both the weepy nostalgia and the excitable free agency rumor mill. The episode reinforces a new, pragmatic Bears ethos: valuing system, depth, and long-term planning over star sentiment.
Key Takeaway:
"They did it to try to win the Super Bowl this year. That’s the difference."
— Dan Bernstein ([25:04])
Next Episode Prediction:
Will the Bears sign Tyler Linderbaum as projected? Tune in Monday for more offseason intrigue and pronunciation pitfalls.
