Dan Bernstein
Well, I. I didn't know the open had started, and I thought that we.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, I don't know, other than, hey, let's start now. You didn't know the opening was happening There was that.
Dan Bernstein
I mean, I remembered you.
Matt Abeticola
All right, Dan, here we go. We're gonna start now.
Dan Bernstein
All right.
Matt Abeticola
Hey, did we put 312 this logo up there?
Dan Bernstein
And then you started laughing.
Matt Abeticola
You did a real nice job at the.
Dan Bernstein
Thanks so much. Good job with your speech. Hey, honey, you looked really good up there. Stop it. We are both going to get in trouble.
Matt Abeticola
More trouble.

It's good for you. A lot of nutrients in there, red blood cells. It's good for you, buddy. Ah, poor guy.
Matt Abeticola
But that's all right. That's gotta stop.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, it's gotta. It's got to stop.
Matt Abeticola
Damn it. We've awarded Forward Progress.
Dan Bernstein
Yes, we have. We have awarded Forward Progress to you just for being the person that you are and. Sorry. I apologize.
Matt Abeticola
No, don't. Don't apologize.
Dan Bernstein
That was.
Matt Abeticola
That was worth it.
Dan Bernstein
And the combine has come and gone. There are some What. Stop it.
Matt Abeticola
I want to know what the grade was. If you all D. You get a
Dan Bernstein
D. Below average, I think is all you get. I don't know. When are we going home? I got games to watch.
Matt Abeticola
All right. Combine's over. Yeah. Ryan Poles wasn't there.
Dan Bernstein
I did watch, too. I did turn on NFL Network. Because I, I wasn't, it wasn't ready to watch golf yet. I didn't know what was on. But a Sunday morning, the, the light is shining in the living room and I've got my little clipboard and some crossword puzzles, a hot cup of coffee. And I was watching offensive linemen, mostly interior offensive lineman, run, which is fun because a lot of them look like giant babies and they're, they're proportions differently and it's fun to watch prospective NFL interior linemen run as fast as they can.
Matt Abeticola
You saw the, who's. Who was that? That red headed, the mullet redheaded guy that. Oh man, what's his name? God darn it. The Kelsey Kelsey boys were talking about him as their favorite offensive lineman.
Dan Bernstein
Okay, well, good for them. I, what I saw was that Kaden Proctor lost £20 and still looked big and still can move even at that weight. Caden 67352.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, he went down from 366 for the, for the combine. So he slimmed down a little bit. And yeah, boy, oh boy, that looked, that looked good.
Dan Bernstein
He ran a five two, one. He jumped three 32 and a half inches and he nearly has, he has 33 and three eighth inch arms, which is fine. That's probably long enough to play tackle. But this is, this is an athlete who might just be there when the Bears pick and some moxie's gone, some mocks. He is there but I have liked him. And the other name that I, I saw, that I found really interesting was somebody I've had my eye on for a little while and d' Angelo Pons, the potential nickel corner from Indiana. Okay, we're waiting to see where he measured out. And he's five eight and a half I think is where it was. And he jumped 43 inches. Here it is 5'9 5. He was 5'9, 43 and a half inch vertical, which is one of the best ever at the combine. It is the second best vertical jump for any player under 510 since 2003. Now he didn't run, he didn't do the broad jump. But when you have somebody who is 59182, that is, that's in play. Not, not talking first round, but day two possible contributor of somebody who can play physical football at the nickel position. I don't think he's tall enough to be long enough to be a linebacker and maybe he'll last in a day three. I don't, I don't know because he hasn't run yet. But, but keep an Eye on d' Angelo Pons and because I, I just think he, he can play.
Matt Abeticola
Here's, here's the kid that I was talking about, the Jennings dunker. You didn't see this kid from Iowa?
Dan Bernstein
No.
Matt Abeticola
He's 65319, that nice bright red mullet.
Dan Bernstein
Smart.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, yeah, he was the best looking kid. Just physical appearance wise with that hair flowing as he ran. It's just, it's fun to function to see offensive lineman run. Kaden, Proctor, Spencer Fano, Monroe Freeling. Guys I mentioned last week, Monroe, Freeling, the kid from Georgia as well are some tackles that stood out. There's going to be tackles available for the Bears. But Dan, I, I just, you know, re evaluating everything and going back to hearing what Dan Roshar had to say, hearing what Ryan Poles had to say. The Bears are not drafting a tackle. They're just not. It's, it's not going to happen. Dan Rochelle again, just repeat what he said. My opinion is it's here. So that's how we're going to approach it. We're going to work with the guys we've got and we're going to make it better. So talking about Theo and Karen Amagaji and Braxton Jones possibly being resigned to a, you know, a one year deal,
Dan Bernstein
he's got to say that though that's the offensive line coach. Positional coaches aren't going to say, yeah, we got to go get somebody because these guys are all.
Matt Abeticola
No, but Ryan, Ryan polls said the same thing that I mean they're, they're, they're not going to draft someone as much as I think they should and as I think there will be guys available for them to draft either in, you know, at 25 or in the second round. They're, they're not going to, I think, I think they're going to draft defensive players. And you know, when Ryan Poll says he's confident that Ozzy Trapillo's career will not be impacted by this injury and he'll make a full recovery, I'm not. That's what he says though. That's what he says. That's what he believes. And you don't act any other way if you don't truly believe that. If they really didn't believe that they would be looking at guys to tackle at tackle either in free agency or in the draft. And you know, maybe they are, maybe this is just their way of playing possible a little bit when it comes to that position. And they are looking at guys and they have guys on their board that they're looking to draft in day one or day two at tackle, but I just, I don't think they're going to. I think Ryan Poles is sincere and genuine in what he said. And I think, you know, you have to hear what I believe. Dan Rochar is not just saying what an offensive line coach has to say. I think he's just filtering through what's being told, what he's hearing from his bosses, that they're not going out in free agency, they're not going to go out in the draft and bring a tackle in, that he's got to coach up who he's got in Theo and Amagaji and Braxton Jones if they were to resign and bring him back, which they may feel is the best free agent option.
Dan Bernstein
Well, before we get into some of the NFL news and notes, because there's already been a lot on this Monday morning, the other combine story that was telling, if nothing else, was when Carnell Tate ran the 40 yard dash in four, five, four. And then he runs it twice and he's over four or five. Say, okay, there were some people that said this is where he was going to be. Others were surprised that he didn't come in closer to 4, 4. And as everybody's saying, oh, well, I guess that's as fast as he runs, still pretty good, and he's still going to make a whole lot of money, et cetera. But, boy, did Drew Rosenhaus snap into action and immediately begin texting people. Because Adam Schefter very quickly got online and said that, wait a second, other NFL teams had him timed much faster. So the eye roll collectively was like, dude, man, just at that point, I know that you're being told, I know you're doing an agent a favor, but understand how obvious that looks like. Just, just have Rosenhaus send the text himself, have him send the tweet himself. At that point, let, let it come from him rather than you, because it's obviously coming from him saying that you already found out that NFL teams said that they, that their old guy standing there with a stopwatch somehow has a better or more realistic time than all of the official laser measured, objective timing. Come on now.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, his time was his time, right?
Dan Bernstein
That's his time. And don't say, well, this. Everyone else said that's somehow wrong. Like, that you're not seeing what you think you're seeing. Like, that's gaslighting. Don't do that. It makes everybody look bad. It makes the agent look scared. It makes the reporter look like too easily fed stuff. It makes everybody dumber. Those are the numbers. That's the whole point of this thing, is to not do some of this stuff. He's still going to be fine. Just let, don't, don't say all those numbers are wrong. NFL teams are saying that those numbers are wrong. No, they're not. Stop. He'll be okay.
Matt Abeticola
What else I learned from the combine as well too is I believe that the Bears will find a safety. You know, reading through all of the experts, guys that are there and NFL Network and ESPN guys, and hearing what they're saying, what they're all collectively saying about the safety position in this draft, I mean, they're talking as far as going into round four to get a guy that can start at safety in 2026. So I think Jaquan Brisker has played his last game for the Bears. I really do. I think Kevin Byard will be the guy that they bring back on probably a two year deal with that second year being some, you know, an option deal for maybe both sides of it. So it's definitely a one year deal for 2026. Maybe there's an option in 2027. I think he comes back and I think the Bears find another starting safety in the draft. And going through the different experts and just compiling names that I've seen that came up more than one place, there's a couple safeties that are some versatile guys like safety, nickelback, safety, linebacker type, guys that stood out on multiple spots that I saw. Jalen Kilgore is a guy that we actually mentioned from South Carolina. Yep. As being associated with the Bears by some different mock drafts, he stood out in the combine. Kyle Lewis, a safety, slash linebacker kind of hybrid position from Pittsburgh is another guy that really stood out. Some other names that I saw again that came through multiple NFL experts, a linebacker named Jack Kelly from byu.
Dan Bernstein
It's so funny, I had that called up. I had Jack Kelly right in front of me here, 6, 2, 2, 40. And he ran a 4, 5, 7. He also had a 10, 5 broad jump that was tied for third. And the tape is actually really good on him too, because he was, he was super productive. So that this is. I mean, Mel Kuyper had him as early day three. Maybe, maybe that moved up a little bit depending on the system that you're running.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. And these guys that I'm mentioning, again, just to, you know, if you're compiling a list, keeping track of guys to keep an eye on going into the draft, here's some these are the names to take a look at. And these are all day two, day three. Guys, what we're looking at.
Dan Bernstein
I have Kyle Lewis on this as a second or third round pick. Kyle. Kyle Lewis said he worked out with linebackers, but a lot of people have him as a safety. He's a hybrid who could be box safety, off ball backer, or even outside linebacker for four, five, three in the 40. But a 39 and a half inch vertical and a 10, nine broad jump.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. And so there's a lot of that versatility that I think we wanted to see in the Bears defense, which we saw going into last season with the way that Dennis Allen kind of evaluated the players and had them shifting around into different positions. So, you know, these are the kind of versatile guys that I think he might look at. A guy like Jalen Kilgore or Kyle Lewis out of Pittsburgh. Jack Kelly, another guy that we saw associated with the Bears in the last few weeks, Malachi Lawrence out of ucf, the outside linebacker, is a guy to maybe keep an eye on. Another name we had mentioned before and had a good combine out of Penn State is Danny. Dennis Sutton, the defensive end. Yep. Another guy who had a really good showing of the combine.
Dan Bernstein
He did 4, 6, 3 in the 46, 6, 256 on Danny Dennis Sutton,
Matt Abeticola
Real, real quick move on the outside. And I saw this name come up a couple different places too. At running back out of Arkansas, Mike Washington, which could be an interesting day. Three guy like 6, 1, just over 200 pounds.
Dan Bernstein
6, 1, 2, 3.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, 2, 23.
Dan Bernstein
Okay. Yep. And he ran a 4, 3, 3.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, yeah. So he, he stood out in a lot of different people's projections. And again, these are just names to jot down as we're looking and getting closer to the draft. Mike Washington out of. Out of Arkansas. The running back from Arkansas, Fox 32. We saw one of their mock drafts. They had Caden McDonald. Still seeing him being associated with the Bears at that 25 pick, not going to be a super sexy pick. Not going to get after the quarterback and dent that pocket. But he is going to help any team he gets to stop the run, and that's going to be a significant contribution. If the Bears take him at 25,
Dan Bernstein
I would say dent the pocket should be an expectation, but not necessarily finish at the quarterback. I think what he can do to. To more than hold the point of attack, but win that matchup in the way that Dennis Allen wants those guys to do that I think he can be an impact defender.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. So I think round one for the Bears is definitely going to go defensive line somewhere and then expect a safety to be their second or third pick.

N hi, I'm Katie Duke and I've been a nurse for over 20 years. Listen, I used to think that I was my most stylish in my 20s, but honestly, style and confidence only get better with age. And that is why I love figs. These scrubs are beautiful, comfortable, and they are built to last. They're not those boxy, scratchy uniforms that we all started out in. No, no, no. These figures fit perfectly, they feel amazing and the quality is just wow. My favorite color? Burgundy. It's chic, it's timeless, and it's even the same color as my apartment because I'm kind of obsessed with it. And I love adding custom embroidery to make my scrubs as personal as my style. And since I work in telehealth, my embroidered figs even double as my ID badge. It's never too late to reinvent yourself or your scrubs. When it comes to the draft, we also have a lot going on in the NFL level that's going to affect, you know, some of what's happening as well as we were looking at and I had been looking at possible free agent tackles as the names are hitting the market here, I can tell you I've got the I'm not interested. Sign on Juan Taylor.
Matt Abeticola
Yes. Who agreed 100%, who let go by the Chiefs.
Dan Bernstein
And he had played himself into a really good deal that now is apparently too expensive for them. But he's good for a penalty, a game essentially and if not more. And that's. Yeah. Slightly more on average actually. But no, thank you. That he's. Juwan Taylor is probably just enough of a player to make me break my television and I don't want to do that. Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
Not interested at all. And yeah, I mean if you're looking at that as a possibility, I'd rather just work with the three guys or you know, the two guys you have under contract and maybe get Braxton Jones back. I'm not interested in Juan Taylor at all. Good at all.
Dan Bernstein
But we're agreed on that one because I, it's. I know personally also what I don't like and it's somebody who is pretty good with the exception of inexplicable penalties that all too often can ruin good things and ruin field position and move you behind the chains and, and no thank you.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. And outside other things in the NFL too, in general. Saw, I don't know if you saw Albert Brear talking about Max Crosby saying that he expects a Max Crosby trade to happen as soon as this week even. And he listed several teams. So I'm not sure how, how, how much clarity there is around this when you mentioned this many teams. But he mentioned Dallas, Baltimore, Buffalo, New England, Philadelphia, the Rams and the Bears, which I do not see happening. Not with the Bears at least.
Dan Bernstein
No, I don't either.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, but Dallas, yeah. You know, he can stay. He can stay in the afc. That's fine. Baltimore, Buffalo, New England, not necessary to go to Philadelphia, the Rams or Dallas not interested in him going there. He can keep out of the nfc. It'd be fine.
Dan Bernstein
Well, speaking of that, you saw that the Minnesota Vikings are making some moves. I think it looked like. Was it Hargraves and Aaron Jones?
Matt Abeticola
Correct. Will they both will be released and
Dan Bernstein
that's going to free up some money that is potentially going to be to contribute to the ongoing mess that they have at quarterback. And whether they think that the answer there is somebody like Tuatanga Vailoa or Kyler Murray, I have absolutely no idea. I love the fact regardless, a division rival with instability at the quarterback position is good for the Bears. Just the instability itself, regardless of who on whom they decide right now this is good. They don't know their quarterback is going to be or why their quarterback is Going to be somebody. And, and I, I, I want that to keep occurring because that's good for them. Now there was the possibility raised at one point that they would be in the market potentially for giving you what you want for Tyson Bent. Fine.
Matt Abeticola
That, that if you're, if you're getting that, you know, conditional third. Yeah, sure. Done. You're telling division.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. You're telling me for the next four or five years, six years, whatever it's going to be that Caleb Williams gets to, gets to duel Tyson Bagent for two divisional games. Bring it on.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. I'm curious to see how it does play out this off season for the Vikings because again, remember, they finished nine and eight. They beat the Bears one time last year with, with J.J. mcCarthy. This isn't a terrible roster. They certainly have a really good coaching staff and I know there's a lot of internal issues going on right now this offseason and we'll see how that carries over if it does impact the season at all. But if they can get someone that can, that can manage the quarterback position, this is not a bad team. It's not a bad team, which I don't like. So I still want to see some issues develop further with the quarterback position. You know, we mentioned Kirk Cousins last week. Sure, I'd love to see that. Love to see Kirk Cousins up there battling with J.J. mcCarthy for, for the starting job. But I do have the possibility of a name for you, Dan, with, with a guy that I think could fall to the Vikings at the quarterback position.
Dan Bernstein
All right,
Matt Abeticola
So I want to just recap Diego Pavia's combine experience.
Dan Bernstein
Dan.
Matt Abeticola
Dan, listen, did you see what he was, what he graded out at? I was, he had a grade of 6, which is traits and talent to be an above average backup. Okay. Which to me you need a good backup quarterback in your, in your roster. I still don't think he's going to get drafted. I still think he'll get invited to some teams camps. But if there was a team to draft Diego Pavia. Dan, I wanted to go the seventh round and take a look. There are two teams, so I wanted to see number one who had the last pick in the draft. This year's Mr. Irrelevant will be selected by the Cleveland Browns at pick number two.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Matt Abeticola
Okay. Which is a possibility. Also in the seventh round, the Minnesota Vikings have three picks from pick number 210 to 220. They have three picks in the seventh round. Is it possible that they could take a flyer on a Diego Pavia so his production score in the combine was a 74, which among the quarterbacks that participated in the Combine, he ranked third among all QBs. His athleticism score was an 86, which is second among all QBs of the combine. His next gen stat score, because you mentioned next gen stats in DBU this, this episode there's today. So we know that, you know, you have some belief in the next gen stats. He scored a 77, which was second best overall for quarterbacks in the combine.
Dan Bernstein
You can just sit here all day and keep reciting stuff and it's not changing how I feel.
Matt Abeticola
I'm telling you, Dan, he's going to get one snap in an NFL game.
Dan Bernstein
I know you told me. The bet is where it is. He did measure. He apparently grew between the Senior bowl and the combine because he was 5 10. He was up to 510 and not just 5, 9 and 7, 8 inches. So how that happened. Now, where would he rank as the shortest passers in NFL history? Where would he rank? He.
Matt Abeticola
If we're going the shortest is number one. He's got to be in the top ten.
Dan Bernstein
Okay, he would. At 5:10. If he is 510, he would tie four others as the shortest listed passer in league history.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, the shortest.
Dan Bernstein
Okay, he would tie.
Matt Abeticola
Who are those?
Dan Bernstein
And so I'm. Can. Can you name any of them? Two of them are currently playing.
Matt Abeticola
Who's short 5 10?
Dan Bernstein
There are two.
Matt Abeticola
Was. Was. Doug Flutie, 5 10.
Dan Bernstein
Yep. Doug Flutie is one.
Matt Abeticola
So Doug Foodie's one. Dave Craig, another.
Dan Bernstein
No, Dave Craig just had tiny hands.
Matt Abeticola
Okay. Just had tiny hands. Who's playing right now that's short?
Dan Bernstein
Kyler Murray.
Matt Abeticola
This guy's name is Kyler Murray. Five ten. Okay, so he's. He's under six foot and is. Is Tua. 510.
Dan Bernstein
No. Bryce Young.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, Bryce Young.
Dan Bernstein
Okay. Bryce Young and Kyler Murray are both and somebody. And Joe Hamilton, does that ring a bell?
Matt Abeticola
No. Does not.
Dan Bernstein
Joe Hamilton played in the play for Georgia Tech.
Matt Abeticola
So, buddy, you have. You have two starting quarterbacks in the NFL right now at his height. Not saying that they're good, but you have two.
Dan Bernstein
But.
Matt Abeticola
So you can't completely discount him because of his height.
Katie Duke
He can't throw.
Matt Abeticola
He can throw. He just has a hard time with the deep ball because he has to elevate it so high and it floats a little bit. He just can't throw the deep ball. He can throw shorter passes.
Dan Bernstein
No, he can't throw them fast enough.
Matt Abeticola
Yes, he does.
Dan Bernstein
No, no, he doesn't.
Matt Abeticola
Now he does have you know, he, he doesn't really have the ability or the desire to kind of climb the, the ladder a little bit in the pocket. He just doesn't really do that well.
Dan Bernstein
He can't see anything in there.
Matt Abeticola
But if there's other five, 10 guys that are starting quarterbacks in the NFL, there's no reason why Diego Pavia can't take a snap in an NFL game.
Dan Bernstein
All right, I'm not, we're. I'm not going to re. Litigate this. Every time his name comes up.
Matt Abeticola
I can relitigate it. I think I want.
Dan Bernstein
Damn it. Keep digging in.
Matt Abeticola
Go ahead.
Dan Bernstein
So just.
Matt Abeticola
Hey, again. He was number two overall quarterback, Next Gen stat 77, graded out at a 6.0 which in which an NFL.com traits or talent to be an above average quarterback. Someone's gonna take him, I'm telling you right now. Okay. His combine was enough. And he also said that his frontal lobe isn't developed well enough, which is why he acts like an sometimes.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, did he really? He did.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. He made a joke about it. He made a joke because he says, he said, yeah, Coach Lee says your frontal lobe doesn't fully develop to your 25. I'm just 24, so I got another year to go. So he.
Dan Bernstein
So that gives him carte blanche to be a penis.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, because his frontal lobes not fully developed. Maybe he wore a bad helmet too. I thought it was kind of funny. He was making a joke about it. He wasn't being serious.
Dan Bernstein
I thought it was funny. We have a trade that occurred today. Former Bears running back David Montgomery was traded by the Lions to the Houston Texans in exchange for their fourth round pick.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, I thought it was a fifth. It's a fourth.
Dan Bernstein
It's a fourth. A 20. 27. 7 and center juice Scruggs. Okay, so David Montgomery will probably have a secondary role, I'd imagine, on the Texans. So I was looking at the numbers for him and I don't like betting on his future at the moment because he is at. He's going to be 29 next season. He's already at 1477 rushing attempts. And if you look at age and attempts, he is right at the beginning of the cliff. That the cliff is usually more sort of intensely around 2000 carries. But you start to see it, especially with his college workload, you start to see it right around now. And I would not want to bet on his future as a running back. But then again, I'm more conservative than most and I am more sort of fearful of wear and tear and attrition and injury than most. So you don't necessarily have to base it off me or at least there should be a Bernstein adjustment for my level of worry. But I would not want to invest in a 29 year old NFL running back with that many rushing attempts.
Matt Abeticola
All right, so if David Montgomery gets you a fourth round pick this year, a seventh round pick next year and something named Juice Scruggs.
Dan Bernstein
Scruggs.
Matt Abeticola
What is, what is DeAndre Swift to get the Bears? I mean, he's going into a final year of a deal. He was very productive last year. Obviously one of the top rushing offenses in the league last year. What do you get for a guy like DeAndre Swift?
Dan Bernstein
Hmm. If somebody comes a calling. But again, I would have to look at the cap acceleration for the. Because I don't know how much the Bears would have to eat of that number and what it would cost them to move him as far because you can call that I'm as far as dead cap and what that would be. But the way running backs are now, he's what, he's 28. You're going to be 28 next year.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, 27 now.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Right in the middle of his prime. I don't know. But I would certainly be interested in finding out just what the market is.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I would. I mean, I didn't. If you were to say that Dave Montgomery is getting traded without me knowing what he gets in return and if you were to say, yeah, Montgomery can get you a fourth and a seventh next year and a player, I would think immediately DeAndre Swift can get more than that or at least, at least a single higher draft pick.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I think he's more valuable because he's faster. He's a more dynamic running back, as tough as David Montgomery is. And we love to see him, you know, running through arm tackles and stiff arming people and spinning in the backfield and all that stuff. Ultimately I think DeAndre Swift is better.
Matt Abeticola
So yeah, I'm not, I'm not pushing forward advocating for the Bears to trade DeAndre Swift. I'm fine if the Bears go into next season and DeAndre Swift is run one of their running backs. But I would have never thought that Montgomery would have gotten you two picks and a player not at this stage in his career. I wouldn't have thought that. That I guess I would seems that seems like a lot for me.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I guess I wouldn't either. Especially with everything I'm saying about what his, what his future value should be. They must, the Texans must be. Well Assured that they're going to get three at least representative Montgomery seasons out of him when he's, you know, between 900 and 1,000 yards and great yards after contact and goal line stuff. And if that's Wor. That to them. Okay, I. It just. To me, the idea of going out and getting a running back is. Isn't a. A wise husbanding of resources, perhaps.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, no, I just.
Dan Bernstein
My feeling.
Matt Abeticola
I get it.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. No, I was kind of. I was a bit surprised to see that. That trade come through to see at least what the Lions got in return. Two. Two picks and. And a player.
Dan Bernstein
And one thing we pointed out last year, and I think I did say this, the idea of Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic and Knuckles and the one guys that much better. All you're doing is taking away more explosive possibilities by giving anybody else the ball. Right. And we. We. We love that idea of, oh, we got this great one two punch. But when the one. You don't want a one two punch. If the one is so good, he should be touching the ball every time. Right?
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. You want that one two punch when it's like 1A 1B or. Or something similar to that. But when it's like one and four in comparison, you don't want four taking snaps away.
Dan Bernstein
We have the one four punch. It doesn't sound right. Yeah, doesn't. Something doesn't quite work right. Pentatonic blues and you get to 1, 4, 5, and then maybe a seventh on the five, and then you go.
Matt Abeticola
I did see that. There are. I saw this. Multiple places. Three teams interested in Tremaine Edmonds.
Dan Bernstein
Great. After the Bears wave him or before.
Matt Abeticola
Before.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, like actually trading for him.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. For trade.
Dan Bernstein
There. There's a lot interested in him.
Matt Abeticola
Three teams interested. Yeah. So let's get a deal put together.
Dan Bernstein
All right. Okay. Something's better than nothing.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. It's interesting that you bring it up that way because, like, the Bears didn't like, say, oh, we're going to, you know, when the. When the league season starts, we're going to release.
Dan Bernstein
No, but, but official allowance of seeking a trade is usually announcing that if he can't find something, you're gonna wave him.
Katie Duke
Right.
Matt Abeticola
So then why would a team, like, help. Help the Bears out and that end and say, all right, we'll give you a, you know, a pick for him. Or we could just wait until March 11th and just sign him.
Dan Bernstein
Maybe they don't. They want to sign him on their terms. I don't know. Maybe first crack at that. That exclusive Ability to negotiate. They don't have to get in a bidding war.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. Or at least get that deal done in place before even come timing.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. The value of the timing works. But I do like this new custom of the courtesy to the player. And when you think about it, instead of saying, I demand a trade or I want to so, like, the team has to do all the legwork and start calling around, I love the fact the team's like, okay, let your agent do it.
Matt Abeticola
You can put.
Dan Bernstein
If you put a trade together that gives him agency and ability to possibly find a place where he wants to go, and it saves them all the work of doing it. I don't that that new courtesy or new custom for veteran players, allowing them to do that is a good thing.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I agree with it. And I think that that shows. Well, one thing that. That didn't show well, Dan, was this past weekend, and I'm really mad about it.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, no. What now?
Matt Abeticola
Well, there was a huge youth basketball tournament at Wakanda High School this weekend, and a lot of our. A lot of our kids were participating. Program. Yeah. Wakanda forever. The Bulldogs. And Ryan Poles was there watching his kid play basketball while the NFL combine was going on.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, the hell you say. Ryan pulls. Wait, wait, let me get this straight. He was watching his own son playing high school basketball when he could have
Matt Abeticola
been a great school. Grade school basketball.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, grade school basketball.
Matt Abeticola
Oh.
Dan Bernstein
When he. He. He should have been there doing the Bears work, and somehow he was. He irresponsibly avoided the critical combine moments to do something as frivolous as watching his own son play basketball.
Matt Abeticola
Yes.
Dan Bernstein
How dare he?
Matt Abeticola
Yes. Isn't that terrible, sir? Yeah. I love that. I love that he was there. And I love that he was there Saturday and Sunday to watch his kid play.
Dan Bernstein
That's great.
Matt Abeticola
That's the place he should have been. And he had no reason to be at the combine. That's what all of his people are there for at the combine. He didn't need to be there. And he was exactly where he needed to be this weekend watching his kid play outside of the actual NFL season. I think good job, Ryan polls.
Dan Bernstein
I think that's a terrific example that he set.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I agree with you. It doesn't mean. It doesn't mean that there wasn't, you know, rumblings around the school about Ryan Poles being there instead of being at the NFL combine.
Dan Bernstein
Really, the therapy, like, hey, you see what's over here? What is he doing here? He should be down eating that shrimp cocktail. He should Be in Indianapolis.
Matt Abeticola
Right. Yeah. There was. It wasn't like, you know, crazy, but there certainly was conversation that. Oh, must. Must be nice to be here when the combine is going on. Yeah, I know.
Dan Bernstein
I hope you don't associate with too many of those people. Let me also give you this. All of our discussion about the local specialty of central Indiana shrimp and how apparently the amount of Earnest response. He actually. Add him to the team, by the way.
Matt Abeticola
Earnest response?
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, please add. He's our ombudsman. Earnest response that people said, Bernstein, you're missing the point about the shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo. It's not about the shrimp. It's about their horseradish sauce. Okay, couple things here that Jews know horseradish, and we know hot horseradish. And it's a thing. It is. It's actually.
Matt Abeticola
You eat that at your meal, right?
Dan Bernstein
It's a thing. And it pass over the bitter herbs, which is coming up. And we're hosting this year. We are. We are having 25 people over, and we're already doing the prep work. We are hosting Passover this year. One thing you need to understand is if you grow up in this tradition, you understand that you start having hot horseradish from the moment you're sitting at the table. It is actually part of the ceremony. It is recognized as representational, representing the bitterness of slavery. And we eat those bitter herbs to unite us with anyone enslaved anywhere. And that is part of the remembrance. And the more punishment that the horseradish can deal out to you, the more you are supposed to appreciate the symbolism, and it becomes a thing. There's always a grandpa or an uncle or something that is piling up on a piece of matzah. And then you watch him fall back over in his chair. And it's a tradition. So believe me, I understand. And I love it. And it does. And it's the best. What do they call it? Jewish Dristan, is what they used to say. And it. Because it clears your sinuses out. And I was watching a video that somebody sent me about St. Elmo's. You want controversy, you want scandal? I think I heard this right. The horseradish that powers the famous sauce at that restaurant that makes central Indiana shrimp, a destination appetizer is grown in Illinois.
Matt Abeticola
Really?
Dan Bernstein
It is farmed specifically for that restaurant by specialty farmers in Illinois.
Matt Abeticola
Do you think that's why Indiana tried really hard to get the bears?
Dan Bernstein
Yes, I think that somehow, and I don't know that this has been well known, but I believe this can be confirmed. I don't know the name of the farm, but it is across the border. And as we know, the last couple weeks, there's been a lot about state pride.
Matt Abeticola
So do you think the Indiana farmers are behind the push to get the bears?
Dan Bernstein
I don't know.
Matt Abeticola
See, they're gonna steal horseradish business. We're gonna steal their football business.
Dan Bernstein
Damn it. Okay, this is why I like the way you think or like it. There may be something very specific about the Illinois soil that actually makes it better, and there's nothing Indiana can do. I certainly would. I wouldn't want it grown around Hammond, perhaps.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, maybe they should try growing some horseradish around the Hammond area. No, they could serve that with radioactive shrimp.
Dan Bernstein
Well, that's different. The radioactive shrimp. Yes. I think it'd be mandatory to have stuff grown on a Superfund site, but apparently southern Illinois, from what I can see here, this is Edwardsville, Illinois. Okay.
Matt Abeticola
Near a school there.
Dan Bernstein
SIU Edwardsville.
Matt Abeticola
Yep.
Dan Bernstein
I believe that sounds right.
Matt Abeticola
Could be wrong, but.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Bagley Farms is listed as the gross St. Elmo horseradish. So, you know what? Maybe this is. You know, I could have this wrong.
Matt Abeticola
All right, here's. Here's the deal, though. Here's the deal. And I. I love this particular place. I love horseradish in a. In a. In a cocktail sauce, you know, for your shrimp cocktail. Big fan. And the more horseradish, the better. I love it. Okay. Yeah, but your restaurant can't be destination based on the sauce like it should be.
Dan Bernstein
I know.
Matt Abeticola
Should be.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, I know.
Matt Abeticola
The shrimp goes somewhere because of the sauce.
Dan Bernstein
Let's see.
Matt Abeticola
You go there because of the shrimp, which is why they have the best land shrimp in the Midwest anyway, because they're.
Dan Bernstein
It's hard to find. Like, I don't. I don't know where you find them in, like, local canals or something. Where those. Where those shrimp come from.
Matt Abeticola
You.
Dan Bernstein
You got to get those special shrimp from the middle of Indian, because I
Matt Abeticola
think they harvest them from Wolf Lake.
Dan Bernstein
Is that where it is?
Matt Abeticola
Yes.
Dan Bernstein
There's pretty decent fishing in Wolf Lake, apparently, says the horseradish growing in Illinois. I can't find the name of the. Maybe they want to keep the name of the exact farm private it is grown with. Let's see. St. Clair, Monroe, and Madison counties have the most concentrated commercial growth of horseradish in North America. Well, how did you.
Matt Abeticola
How did you learn that. That it comes from Illinois?
Dan Bernstein
It was a video because they had the. They had the manager talking about it.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, one of their. Oh, the restaurant's video.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, the restaurant has a video talking about their meaning to the combine and what their history is with the combine and that they're. That they have a farm in Illinois. And I went, what? Come on now. You can't do that.
Matt Abeticola
He spilled the secret. I wonder if he still works there.
Dan Bernstein
I don't know. The manager guy. Yeah. Oh, I think once they. I'm sure they absolutely let him go the moment they found this out.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. You can't get secrets.
Dan Bernstein
And the sauce is everywhere. You can get the bottled jarred sauce anywhere. And you can get shrimp anywhere, apparently, if you can. I don't know if you can get the special what they get in central Indiana.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I see it at the butcher at Mariana all the time. There's always a jar of something St. Elmo something or other on the butcher counter for sale. Have you seen that? I haven't. I've never looked at it to see what it is. Is it like a steak sauce? Are they known for their steak sauce as well?
Dan Bernstein
It's a horseradish sauce.
Matt Abeticola
But that. It didn't look like a shrimp cocktail sauce, though, that I see at the butcher.
Dan Bernstein
It's not. It's a white, creamy horseradish sauce.
Matt Abeticola
Okay, maybe that's what it is then.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, prepared horseradish.
Matt Abeticola
Looked at it too closely.
Dan Bernstein
Okay. It's like a creamy prepared horseradish. I don't think they. They use a red style cocktail sauce. Okay, well, that's. Yeah. Yeah. No, I can't find the name of the farm, but I wonder where they.
Matt Abeticola
It's too bad.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, it's a secret.
Matt Abeticola
Be great if it was somewhere here around me, I would go and talk
Dan Bernstein
to him, chase him down.
Matt Abeticola
How dare you sell to Indiana. You keep that horseradish in Illinois, mister.
Dan Bernstein
All right. I didn't know. Well, and then we'll hear if there's any, like, Sean Payton wine fights in their Peyton Manning wine cellar, whatever they call it, where the certain coaches reserve certain bottles only to keep those bottles away from other coaches.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, boy.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, yeah. No, that happens. Yeah, I know it happens. Apparently with Sean Payton, who likes to do stuff like that. Oh, I'll show you. John Fox, right?
Matt Abeticola
Then he shits all over his quarterback, right?
Dan Bernstein
Then he's like, what do you mean? You're. You've been hurt for a while.
Matt Abeticola
All right, I gotta. He's been hurt since sixth grade. He's had a thousand surgeries.
Dan Bernstein
Well, I wish I would have known that. Someone's getting fired over this. Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
Alrighty then. That'll do. It for forward progress today.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I kind of want horseradish now.
Matt Abeticola
I do too, but I want Illinois horseradish. None of that garbage stuff from Indiana.
Dan Bernstein
No, I don't want the radioactive stuff or the super fun stuff. Give me good old fashioned real rock ribbed Illinois horseradish. Damn it. I don't know what I'm talking about, but that's fine. And this has been Forward Progress a Chicago Bears and NFL podcast on 312 Sports for Progress is Stopped.
