I mean, if you're a Bears fan,
Dan Bernstein
you're thinking Forward progress. Come on. 219.
Matt Abaticola
219Forward progress Chicago Bears podcast with Dan Bernstein and Matt Abeticola on 312 Sports Foreign
Dan Bernstein
here on forward progress. A big day for you, the Chicago Bears fan. And because it's a big day, you get not one, but two episodes of Forward progress. See, you didn't even know about this. Bonus to your Thursday.
Matt Abaticola
Very excited about it. So we'll have a live Forward Progress tonight in conjunction with the release of the NFL schedule. The official release of of the Chicago Bears schedule.
Dan Bernstein
What time are we thinking around? Because it's gonna leak and then we're waiting for the official release. So 7:15. What are we thinking?
Matt Abaticola
Sure. I mean, or maybe just go right at seven. Why not?
Dan Bernstein
Okay, that's fine.
Matt Abaticola
Make it easy. Go right at 7 o'. Clock.
Dan Bernstein
Do that. Get it. We'll get all the info out there for you. Make sure that you're aware of everything. And I was thinking like, you know, in previous years, I always would roll my eyes like it to me when I ask, why are we Doing this. Why? What. What's the big deal about the schedule release? And it's not saying what's the big
Matt Abaticola
deal with the NFL?
Dan Bernstein
What's the deal with airline food? So wait, it is. Remember. Remember when we used to get food on airplanes?
Matt Abaticola
Remember?
Dan Bernstein
That was. It's quite a thing, by the way. That was funny.
Matt Abaticola
It's funny you say that. I saw a thing on Instagram the other day and it was like, from the mid-70s, what flying first class looked like.
Dan Bernstein
Dude. When they would bring out, like a spiral ham and cut it for you.
Matt Abaticola
Yes.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. They've got a whole salmon there. You get to choose which chunk you out. Of course. Yeah. That. They're. They're poaching that on the flight itself. Yeah.
Matt Abaticola
As they're smoking.
Dan Bernstein
Yes, sure. It was wild. Here's what I. What I care about, because a lot of this I don't. Okay, I understand if you're. If you plan to travel with the Bears, knowing the whens and where's and allowing you to start booking your hotels and your ridiculously expensive flights. If you are looking to go to one of these cities this year, I think Seattle is a terrific destination city. If you haven't been. I really do. And that, you know, maybe that's your trip. So I get that. I want to see where the division games are concentrated because, you know, last year was an example of, you know, allowing some injured players to get back. We had a lot being a big cluster of late division games and where the bye week is. I do think that really matters for some teams. What kind of break are you going to get and when are you going to get it? And what does that mean about how you pace your season and specifically injuries? Are you going to get a chance to say with this bye week here, we can rest these. Get them two weeks. Like, I do think that some of that really matters. And also, I hate to admit it, but under Ben Johnson, how snarky is the social media stuff going to be now? Are they going to be muscled up a little bit after last year and after the whole. The packers and the cheese grading and everything? My guess is the answer to that is yes, I would agree with that.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And why not? I mean, why not? You're the current, you know, NFC North Division champions. Why not enjoy it? Puff your chest a little bit.
Dan Bernstein
They took the North.
Matt Abaticola
Right. We'll see if they give it back.
Dan Bernstein
Right. But they did it. And maybe they're going to rub it in a little bit and maybe we get our little side shots. At Matt LaFleur. And he wonders what Ben Johnson. He ever did to Ben Johnson or what Ben Johnson is doing to him and why we're doing any of this. But I still don't know. But my guess is a team that has never shied away from a little bit of snark is going to lean in and that might be fun.
Matt Abaticola
So the international games were released yesterday. We went over those. There are some other games that have been leaked that we know in advance of what's happening tonight. We do know that the hall of Fame game will feature Carolina and Arizona. That's a Thursday, August 6th game. So Carolina and Arizona in the hall of Fame game. We do know that there's going to be a Thanksgiving Eve game that will feature the packers and the Rams.
Dan Bernstein
Wednesday football.
Matt Abaticola
Wednesday night Football before Thanksgiving, packers and Rams. We also know that there's a Black Friday game. So the day after Thanksgiving will feature the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos that the Bears played in last year when they beat the Packers. Or is that when they lost the Packers? They beat the packers or lose to the Packers.
Dan Bernstein
Which one?
Matt Abaticola
Black Friday.
Dan Bernstein
Black Friday.
Matt Abaticola
Go back and look at my notes.
Dan Bernstein
Lost, Right?
Matt Abaticola
They lost that game, right? Yeah. So we know there's a Black Friday game, Steelers and Broncos. We do know. Obviously, there are three Thanksgiving day games and the Bears are rumored to be playing on Thanksgiving against the Lions in the early game of those three games. Game two will have the Eagles and Cowboys and then we'll see what happens at night on Thanksgiving. There are also going to be a. A triple header on Christmas day. Again, Dan, three NFL games for Christmas Day. The Bears are rumored to play the noon game on Christmas day against the Packers.
Dan Bernstein
Noon game, Christmas day.
Matt Abaticola
Okay, we have. So we have the Bears on Thanksgiving, the Bears on Christmas day. Happy family time to all of us.
Dan Bernstein
Well, or work time. Well, work time, Christmas day doesn't matter to me other than the fact that it's Jason's birthday and.
Matt Abaticola
And that doesn't matter.
Dan Bernstein
No, it doesn't matter. And we'll just end it. If it's a noon game, that's fine. We'll end it with a movie and. And a dinner.
Matt Abaticola
Or you could start at celebration early and ended by 11. Say, kid, we're done celebrating you. Now get the hell out of the room.
Dan Bernstein
Get out of the room. Go to bed.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. So here's some other rumors that we've seen for the Chicago Bears. Week one at Carolina. We've also seen week three, the Bears playing the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. Week Four, the Jets at a noon game, which is great. Week 7, Thursday Night Football, Bears and New England Patriots. Week 9, Sunday Night Football, Bears and Buccaneers.
Dan Bernstein
Now is this just rumored or is this reported?
Matt Abaticola
These are. Well, it's reported by various NFL reporters, but they're rumored. It's not confirmed yet. We can't.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Matt Abaticola
You know, so this is just stuff that we've seen. Some of the stuff I'm sure will be right. Week 11, New Orleans, a noon game. We mentioned week 12, which is Thanksgiving. Week 13 against Jacksonville, a noon game. Now week 16 starts the Christmas Day week games and that's the Green Bay and Bears maybe at noon. Week 16, 17, 18. The Bears are playing division opponents, which they normally do. Week 17 will be Detroit. A 325 game is a rumor. And then week 18, they end the season at Minnesota. Okay, so that's some speculation. Rumors. We've seen some leaks possibly of, of the Bears schedule for this year. But what would you think of. Yeah, I mean you're, you're cool with a Thanksgiving Day game, Christmas Day game?
Dan Bernstein
Sure.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Why not? Let be be there for the entire country to see. Well, let them watch a little Caleb Williams magic.
Matt Abaticola
So those are, I mean those are some, you know, with that Thursday night football, the Sunday Night Football, Turkey Day, Christmas day. Getting some some special focus on your Chicago Bears again tonight when the schedule is released. We will have a live forward progress for you.
Dan Bernstein
You bet.
Matt Abaticola
To go over it and we confirm all these things or say, hey, none of these things were correct and here's what the actual schedule is. One other thing I wanted to point out for you, NFL writer Kevin Patra, senior writer for NFL.com he looked at all the division winners from last year and said who's the most likely to repeat and who would be most likely to not repeat?
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Matt Abaticola
He had the Philadelphia Eagles as most likely to repeat.
Dan Bernstein
Does this have to do with strength of schedule?
Matt Abaticola
It's all based on strength of schedule, the current roster, the off season signings and draft. He has the Bears as the most vulnerable to not repeat as champions of their division.
Dan Bernstein
Why?
Matt Abaticola
He says Chicago used a host of comeback victories to flip from worst to first in the NFC North. Staying on top will prove a tougher challenge in a tightly packed division. Caleb Williams continues to ascend and Ben Johnson's offense figures to take another step forward with the development of Roma Dunes A, Luther Burden and Colston Loveland. There is a question at left tackle. Wonder who's been saying that Chicago has yet to fill the holes on the defensive line. I wonder who's been saying that, but everyone. The Bears toed the line last year, winning seven one score games with a more difficult route. A regression to the mean in those close tilts could cost them a chance to repeat. The Lions are improved on paper from a year ago after filling the holes on the offensive line, but they still have questions on defense. When Micah Parsons returns from injury, the packers will be a force to be reckoned with and but we don't know when that is, how early in the season that will be, and if the Vikings can figure out their QB room. Kevin o' Connell if possibly getting a Sam Darnold like boost from Kyler Murray. They can't be counted out, he said. You could legitimately make an argument that any of the four teams can win the division without sounding completely nutty. I like the way he finished it there, because you can make an argument for every team right now.
Dan Bernstein
Of course you can. And everybody is looking for absolutely ridiculous excuses for football content right now.
Matt Abaticola
Yes, I wonder why that is. I. I have no idea.
Dan Bernstein
It just is.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, and by the way, if if you're not a regular subscriber or listener to Dan Bernstein Unfiltered Dan had a We had a nice conversation today about Dennis Allen and asking the question is, you know, is Dennis Allen on the clock?
Dan Bernstein
I think the answer is yes. Basically it's my way of saying that once we ferret all the way through what's been said and why that that he's coaching for his job and he's very likely without improvement from the pass rush, going to be gone next year unless something crazy happens.
Matt Abaticola
So if you haven't take a listen to that on DBU, another one of our 312 podcasts here on 312 Sports. Last thing I have for you, Dan. I don't know if you saw this story about the NFL ending the minority offensive assistant mandate.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, but there it's weird though, because they're trying to be weaselly about it and say we're not doing this because we're being pressured by fascists. But we're kind of. We kind of did it before without being told to do it. But we're we believe in it, but we can't do it. So I don't. I don't really believe what they're saying.
Matt Abaticola
So here's the story, and this is multiple writers on espn, including Kaylin Kaylor. The NFL ended a mandate that all 32 teams hire a minority coach as an offensive assistant ahead of the 2025 season and not because of recent pressure from Florida Attorney General James Uthmeyer, who on Wednesday, yes, he issued an investigative subpoena to the league over its hiring practices. Uthmeyer, who in March threatened a potential civil action against the NFL over the league's Rooney Rule, said Wednesday that the NFL had changed diversity language on its website and that it had, quote, capitulated on some of their discriminatory hiring quotas, end quote. While arguing that the revisions raised new questions about the policy, he also took credit for the league ending the program to increase minority representation in assistant coaching ranks, a program started in 2022 after former coach Brian Flores sued the league. But ESPN's learned of the league ending a mandate for this program this past winter. The NFL now contends, apparently in response to our letter, this is Uthmeyer, that the NFL has sunset this mandate. Given the NFL's history of open discrimination, however, we are skeptical that the mandate is no longer in place.
Dan Bernstein
And like the discrimination against whom, right?
Matt Abaticola
And like the Rooney rules, he says it violates Florida law.
Dan Bernstein
That's open discrimination, if you remember. The purpose was that there's a very tight circle of influence and connection and exposure between a lot of these insular coaching relationships. And all it was was giving somebody else from the outside an opportunity to be a part of a group where they wouldn't usually be a part of that. That's all it was. And I think it was Nate Shieldhouse of the Rams who said something really interesting where this is a guy who would never, ever have had an opportunity to get in a room, probably because he didn't know Sean McVay, you know, but the program allowed him to have an opportunity to get to know Sean McVeigh and that kind of proximity and that kind he. That he didn't know him at all. He. They didn't travel in the same circles. They didn't have friends in common. And when you do put in some of these avenues to say, hey, bring somebody else in that you wouldn't otherwise, that it's given him, it jump started his career and. And it's put him on a completely different trajectory, completely different track. So you can have a league that is 70% black, have reasonable representation. That makes for better business, better football, better everything, right?
Matt Abaticola
It's not that you have to hire a minority. It's just the interview process is opened up to more people. Despite the NFL recently acknowledging the end of the program to Uth Meyer, Jonathan Bean, the NFL's senior vice president for league leadership and inclusion, resisted the characterization in an interview In March, he said that the league office funding was never meant to be permanent. The league has been reimbursing clubs for half of the salaries of coaches hired via the program. I wasn't aware of that, he says. We didn't end it. Bean told ESPN so that the program is still in existence, but it's not mandatory for a club. It's also not reimbursed. Now we have clubs that are hiring minority offensive assistants. And at this point, is there a need to necessarily continue to reimburse? Is there a need to necessarily mandate that, or is it now a best practice we have as an organization?
Dan Bernstein
Right. I think the whole point is just spurring teams to get out of there and spring all of these coaches to get out of their bubble a little bit. Get out of all of the. The sons of the coaches and the. And the sons of the brothers in law of the coaches that seem to always make their way up the ranks to just say, look, let's, let's open it up a little bit and it's good for everybody involved.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. And Art Rooney says. Rooney the second says, I think the hiring mandate had some success in some areas and not so much success in other areas. He is the chair of the league's diversity committee. Bean said all 32 clubs were in compliance with the mandate from its inception. But the role of offensive assistant, variety by club. So not everyone was in the QB room. We have some clubs that would do it, some that would say, well, I also want my offensive assistant doing other things as well. Former NFL assistant coach Kenneth K.J. black got his start in the NFL through this hiring mandate as an assistant with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. Coach Sean McVeigh promoted Black before the 2023 season to be an offensive assistant, and Black worked with the wide receivers. So, yeah, again, it's not something that, that teams have to do as far as hiring a minority, but this is a good program just to get more people involved in the conversation.
Dan Bernstein
Yep.
Matt Abaticola
And I don't. I don't see why that's a bad thing. And I don't know who's being discriminated against, as James Uthmeyer wants to point out. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Are you, are you discriminating against the sons of NFL coaches or the sons of the brother in laws of NFL? Come on, man. The nobody is. This doesn't hurt anybody and it does help people. It's a, it's a, it is a entirely positive policy that doesn't damage anyone.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. Doesn't seem that hard to understand unless You're.
Dan Bernstein
Unless you're trying really hard to not understand, which is possible.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, exactly.
Dan Bernstein
Which is. Then that unfortunately is all too common a. A case in some of these. Oh, I'm a whiny bitch and I'm getting discriminated against and people don't like me because I'm a. I'm a whiny stupid bitch. That means I'm being discriminated against. Okay. Sucks for you. Stop being a whiny stupid. There.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, you said it.
Dan Bernstein
Yep.
Matt Abaticola
All right. Once again, there will be a special live forward progress for you tonight. We'll start at 7pm in conjunction with the release of the. The official release of the NFL schedule.
Dan Bernstein
Can I paint my face? Can I paint my face?
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. Shirtless and face painted.
Dan Bernstein
Not that. Nothing to do with the Bears. I just get to want to paint it. Yeah.
Matt Abaticola
Like a clown. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
No, just maybe a coat of primer and then I think you should go
Matt Abaticola
John Wayne Gacy, I'll go Pennywise and then we'll do the show.
Dan Bernstein
Wheat. If the Bears win the Super Bowl. We're doing that
Matt Abaticola
for a show.
Dan Bernstein
No, forever.
Matt Abaticola
All right, so if the Bears win the super bowl, you'll paint your face like John Wayne Gacy every day. No, do one for one show.
Dan Bernstein
If the Bears win the super bowl, you will do Pennywise and I'll do John Wayne Gacy and. Sure, let's do that instead of our version of Insane Clown Posse.
Matt Abaticola
Yes. I mean, okay, I'm into. I think I got the better end of that, but.
Dan Bernstein
Sure, you get the more difficult end of that. For sure. But I get to do the fake mustache because that's the best part of the clown thing, is with the stash there.
Matt Abaticola
Can you grow a mustache?
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I could.
Matt Abaticola
Oh, yeah. I didn't know. I didn't know how your facial hair grows.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I mean, it wouldn't look good, but I could. I'm not.
Matt Abaticola
Well, mustaches don't look good unless you're Tom Selleck. I know.
Dan Bernstein
I'm not committing to growing Goose. I don't think look good on him either. No, he looks fine. Fine. Maybe not a huge fan.
Matt Abaticola
No.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, that's why. That's why in Maverick they're all clean shaven. Because it just looks better.
Matt Abaticola
Well, he has a. Well, is everyone clean shaven? Yeah, they are. I guess you're right.
Dan Bernstein
I think they are. Because, I mean, Vipers is probably the. Your. Your clubhouse leader, I think.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. Hey, I'm really. I'm really stuck on that whole idea that. That one podcast mentioned. Like an origin story, a prequel. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Top Gun Viper in Vietnam in the F4s.
Matt Abaticola
Yes. Yeah. And you get the real story about how Pete Mitchell's dad, Duke Mitchell was killed, but he saved other pilots. Yes. He died.
Dan Bernstein
Yes.
Matt Abaticola
And then tried to hide it.
Dan Bernstein
You have enough airworthy F4s still in existence and people who could fly them that you could, You've got those planes. You could do this.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, I think they should do it.
Dan Bernstein
And it's a great one too. It's. It's the linebacker of planes of the, you know, the fighter attack. It could be carrier based. It could be land based. That thing that, that, that plane is a horse of an airplane too, there.
Matt Abaticola
It's a great idea. I love it. I'm very excited. I hope someone latches onto that and Tom Cruise puts it in motion as Top Gun 3 is already in the works. I'm very excited about that.
Dan Bernstein
I know, but the prequel is a good idea.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, I think it's a great idea.
Dan Bernstein
Even though we missed Top Gun day. But, but look, it's the schedule release party. We're excited. We're going to have our own schedule release special when we for you, your Chicago Bears look at every game, every matchup. We can't be a travel agency. We can't find your hotels. And maybe we could suggest some restaurants and some things to do in your various places for the road games. We could do that maybe tonight and say, look, hey, if you're making this trip, here's something you should check out. I, maybe a fun fact about every city to which you might want to travel.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. And if they're in Jacksonville, we can give them a lot of places of what not to do and where not to go.
Dan Bernstein
No, I think, I think what we should do is there should be a Jacksonville like Borz and Bernstein crawl that you can do where you, you arrive. You have to go to the King's Inn. You do a lap at the King's Inn carefully, you know, roll them up and, and drive around. Then you go to Waffle House. Then you drink half a bottle of Captain Morgan. Warm. Warm. Yeah, absolutely. And then you get a ride to the Super 8. Is that what it was?
Matt Abaticola
Yes.
Dan Bernstein
Super 8. You get a ride down a couple exits to the Super 8. You check in and then you go. You, you take the Super 8 owner's keys with his gym membership. Remember? He gave me his keys so you
Matt Abaticola
can go work out so I could
Dan Bernstein
go work out at the local Gold's gym.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah. And by the way, the, the, the, the Half a bottle of Captain Morgan. Was you by yourself. You took that out of my bag and drank it in the backseat while I was driving. So I wasn't. Listen. Haven't known. I wasn't drinking while driving. You were drinking the entire thing from the bottle in the backseat.
Dan Bernstein
Maybe. Yes.
Matt Abaticola
No.
Dan Bernstein
There's no maybe, but that's part of it. You got to do that as part of this.
Matt Abaticola
So if you find an Uber driver that will let you drink a half a bottle of warm Captain Morgan, you're good to go.
Dan Bernstein
And then you have to have somebody get food poisoning from bad seafood and absolutely wreck a bathroom. Yes.
Matt Abaticola
Geez. Was. Was that the. Was that the Waffle House where the fight. Was that where the fight broke out and you just. You were sitting there.
Dan Bernstein
I was hungry.
Matt Abaticola
Piece of.
Dan Bernstein
I was busy eating. I might have gotten shot, but it's worth. I. I was busy eating my toast with jelly.
Matt Abaticola
Yeah, I'm gonna have. I'm gonna have another order of toast before we go. Yeah, okay, great. Good luck with that.
Dan Bernstein
So, yeah, there was. There was. There were gunshots going, but I'm not going to be dissuaded. I will not be in. In any way talked out of the. The toast that I had coming to me.
Matt Abaticola
We'll meet you outside when you're done. So we're gonna leave. Take care.
Dan Bernstein
I. Maybe I was wounded, but, you know, everything was fine. It's all right. You have enough Captain Morgan. You can get over a bullet wound.
Matt Abaticola
Extra order of toast you had to have.
Dan Bernstein
I did. Yeah. And I did have it. Yes. Well, it was. That's. That was my dessert, because you get that with the. With the jelly on it, you know, after my steak and eggs, and it's all good.
Matt Abaticola
All right, that's Forward Progress again. We'll be here for you live tonight. 7 o' clock. With the release of the NFL schedule.
Dan Bernstein
Do not miss it. You do not want to miss tonight's live episode of Forward Progress, because when it comes to breaking down a Bears schedule release, we've never done it before on Forward Progress, and we will prove that we will do it in a way that it cannot be done elsewhere. It simply cannot. We have the ability, the technology and the wherewithal to give you the. The most important reactions to the Bears schedule release that you could get absolutely anywhere. And if you miss it, you're going to kick yourself. Forward progress has stopped.
