It tells me that the femur and those other two lower legs kind of slam together in a way that they're not supposed to.

Yeah. And so the 8 to 10 week time frame puts him back at the end of the first quarter, if I can use Ben Johnson's terms, or right at the start of the second quarter. So week two is Philadelphia. Week three is the Jets. Week four is at Green Bay. That would be 10 weeks is week four Green Bay.

So it's never good. And it's going to happen. It sucks. But as I mentioned on dbu, you can't miss what you've never seen.

Right. Any of these back for week five and the rest of the season. Great. Of course. Are the Bears better off having him for the first four games? Of course they are. Are the chances of them winning increase with him being there for the first four games? Of course they do. So what is that? That's Vikings, Jets, Vikings. Eagles, Jets. Green Bay.

[Dan Bernstein]

There's never a good time. So there's never a good time. I actually wanted to know more about the Terrell Smith injury Yesterday or why he left the field with trainers. What they're looking at there? Because I don't. This depth chart is not great in the secondary. It's just not.

[Matt Abaticola]

Yeah. And if he's, if he's not ready to go through a full training camp and ready to start the season, this is, you know, year two where you won't have it missed all of last year. And if he's not ready to go this year, it can't keep having bodies on your roster that can't play Terrell Smith, Kyler Gordon, you know, and it's just this, this compounds the Kyler Gordon injury so much more now that Cam Lewis is back at safety. Jalen Jones taking most of these snaps with the, with the ones.

And how are you developing Malik Muhammad?

[Matt Abaticola]

Right.

[Dan Bernstein]

Are you going to ask him to learn multiple positions as well? Who's. I know they love the multiples.

[Matt Abaticola]

To me, the biggest takeaway for me is this rookie. All your talk about how much he understands and how aware he is and how he was a coach on the field at every level. Prove it, because they are about to give him all of it. Is my prediction. Whether they say they are right now. If he's going to probably keep asking, you know, give me more, give me more, give me more. I would expect them to lay a lot on the plate of this rookie.

[Matt Abaticola]

Well, I mean, that's, that's, that's interesting because you have the relationship that was starting with Dylan Thieneman and Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant talked about being there as a leader to help, guide to direct, to teach. Even now, there was high praise for Dylan Thieman coming in, but you can't expect a rookie to be a voice or a vocal leader of that, of that defense. Now, Cam Lewis was brought in for a reason.

[Dan Bernstein]

Yeah, but.

[Matt Abaticola]

And he's a veteran guy.

[Dan Bernstein]

Thieneman is supposed to be advanced in his awareness and in his. How immersed he is in enough football language to be able to communicate properly.

[Matt Abaticola]

Sure. And what do you think the chances are of a rookie, regardless of his pedigree or resume or expectations, making a very smooth transition?

[Dan Bernstein]

I don't think.

[Matt Abaticola]

College of the NFL.

[Dan Bernstein]

I'm not saying it'll be smooth. My feelings are. My anticipation is that it will be bumpy. But I don't think they have a choice.

[Matt Abaticola]

No, they don't have a choice, but I feel a little better about it having a veteran player next to him. Now, he may not be the same caliber of Kobe Bryant, but Cam Lewis isn't brand new to this league.

[Dan Bernstein]

No. And I also think now that you should be looking at talented defenses and be scouring that. That cut wire, man, because there's. That is a position. Box safety is a position where competence should be available.

[Matt Abaticola]

And I know it's a different position, but do you think you're going to like, you're going to hit the lottery two years in a row in finding cj GJ last year and, and what he provided?

[Dan Bernstein]

No, I think it's unlikely.

[Matt Abaticola]

But I.

Or doesn't mean you shouldn't do it

or can't do it or it's not luck. And they're good at it.

Maybe they're good at knowing exactly the skill set that they need to fit as a stopgap. And if the stop gap sticks around like Gardner Johnson did, great. And if. If they don't, somebody supplants them, you get rid of them.

Yeah. And it's just again, it just makes the, the Kyler Gordon situation even more frustrating and compounds where you're at now with the fact that you lose Kobe Bryant and. Valid point. You can't really be that upset or miss what you've never seen.

[Dan Bernstein]

Well, you can be upset. It's hard to be emotional.

[Matt Abaticola]

Hard to be emotional. Sure, that's fair. But it just. If he was there, it would make things look a lot different. And the fact that he can't be there because of soft tissue issues one after another, like, I would really be curious to end up to hear an unfiltered. If I could take from the coaching staff, like, yeah, you expect injuries to happen. And unfortunately it happened to your prize free agent signing on day one of fucking pads. And it just makes the Kyler Gordon situation not being there even worse. Into a secondary that was going into this season was going to be a strength of this defense because the general manager talked about having these guys in place now puts more pressure on the quarterback, holding the ball longer, allowing more pressure from the defense. He said that. I'm not making that up.

[Dan Bernstein]

Part of it, it was part of the. Whatever the complex geometry was that everything would be better because it would be better.

[Matt Abaticola]

Now, if you're talking about your two quarterbacks, your nickel corner, your two safeties, that's five guys. Two of those five are gone now.

[Dan Bernstein]

Now, this is the. Where I was leading. What is the other best way to make it easier on your secondary? Get to the quarterback as quickly as possible?

[Matt Abaticola]

Yes.

So could it be that they eventually give in and rather than scouring that waiver wire for a safety. They get one of these expensive, one trick pony. Who.

[Matt Abaticola]

I just. Months.

But that's a major commitment if we're going to extra hard.

I mean, if the coaches coach extra hard, this could help alleviate the situation in the defensive back or what I'm

thinking maybe the secondary coaches now specifically need to coach harder. They don't have to go all the way to extra hard. Maybe if the defensive line in the front seven positional coaches were coaching them harder.

[Matt Abaticola]

So maybe they were coaching moderately hard.

Now they increase that or moderate or medium. And they might just be medium.

So they're medium. Get that hard. So if you turn that up a bit.

Turn that up a bit and coach them harder, then they'll be better.

I think you should see if they can do that.

Speaking of Bears reporters, do you agree with Patrick Finley, who says that Caleb Williams should not play in the preseason? That if we are to believe everything they're saying about how far he's come and how advanced he is in knowing the plays and seeing things and calling plays off and saying run it again and all the things that they're doing, that this is reason that do not play him in the preseason at all. He doesn't need the reps he needed last year.

[Matt Abaticola]

I respect Patrick Finley's opinion on it. My opinion is the quarterback should play and he doesn't need to play all three games or a majority of all three games. But I think he needs to play.

[Dan Bernstein]

I think there's a way to.

[Matt Abaticola]

I don't care if you're a third year guy with great expectations, play a series. I don't care if you're a 12 year veteran. You should be out there and play.

[Dan Bernstein]

I think that he, he should play a series and get out of there. I don't think there's any standards or we got to build his confidence or needs to complete this pass or that pass that I want him. I want him preparing. I want him warming up as the starter. Yeah, I want him to play a series and come out there with the team because I do think with a new center and new receivers, I think there is more benefit than there is risk under controlled circumstances.

[Matt Abaticola]

Yeah. And, and, and when he does that, and this is just me as a. I don't care what the results are. No, do not care.

[Dan Bernstein]

No.

[Matt Abaticola]

Preseason games don't mean a thing. I'd rather have, like you said, warm up as the starter, prepare his day as the starter, get ready to get under center and lead the team, get the offense, get the calls in and make some plays.

[Dan Bernstein]

I like the thought, sure, I understand it.

[Matt Abaticola]

I understand it. But I don't, I don't. But I've always thought that about preseason. You should play, you should get. Because you cannot, no matter what you do with combined practices with a great defense on the other side of the ball, whatever, you cannot simulate game action. You cannot.

[Dan Bernstein]

But you can control an environment a little bit more. And certainly with these arranged practices that you have, they're probably going to get more work done in those, because that's what we've heard in the past, is that they really drill down on stuff and because they can do so much more situationally and they don't have to wait for the game to break around the chance to use a certain subset of plays or a certain subset of player combinations and they can control all that. They, they like the dual team practices better and get more out of those. And I understand, however, you're right, that even in those you don't have the hungry, younger players trying to, trying to pop in a game situation.

[Matt Abaticola]

Yeah. Because while they may count more for certain players who are trying to earn a spot, they still don't count. And I want to see them in full action against another team with referees and the play clock and fans. I want all that to happen. And as far as controlling the situation, too, there are things you can do. You can put certain packages in certain plays that you know where he's protected better, less chance of anything happening. I mean, he can get hurt taking a snap and going back and practice.

[Dan Bernstein]

Right. And also he's not going to be running around crazy trying to keep a play alive.

[Matt Abaticola]

Right. Because. Because they don't matter.

[Dan Bernstein]

He'll slide.

Right. Because he's been very good, has shown he can throw the ball away.
