Come on.
Forward Progress, a Chicago Bears podcast with Dan Bernstein and Matt Abeticola on 312 Sports.
B
We've got one more forward progress before the post game. Bears packers forward progr so the next time this show convenes, I have a feeling we're either going to be really excited or really dismayed because it's already building. This is all starting to build up to something and it's worth it for the first time. Bears Packers Round 1325 Sunday and we're here to talk about it today on Forward Progress, a Chicago Bears podcast here on 312 Sports. Bernstein and a Bata Cola why is Micah Parsons being weird?
A
I, I don't, I don't know, Dan. But I'm telling you, the, the more national stuff I see, the more I, I hear from up north. I'm just getting super irritated. I'm like ready for this game to happen. No, I'm tired. I'm tired of the packers and the packers fans. And then you got Micah Parsons being a complete weirdo, talking about no one's respecting him. Like, what do you, what are you talking about? That. No. Who's not respecting you? What have I missed that the Bears have said that has been inflammatory or disrespectful towards Micah Parsons?
B
I can't figure it out. All anybody's done is bend over backwards to compliment this guy about how you.
A
Have to, you have to key on him. You have to be aware of him. You have to game plan for him. Like, well, how does that disrespectful dude.
B
The guy's got like, unless there's something I've missed and I think Declan Doyle said he's a challenge. He's one of those guys you had to be aware of at every snap. Slippery, great pass rusher. You don't ever overlook where he is on the field. You've got to be aware of him at all times.
A
I mean, so if he's creating opportunities for these, you know, these. These fake demons to fight against and to be angry about, great. Then get yourself all worked up, and that's what you got to do.
B
But is it.
A
There's nothing legitimate to it.
B
Is it this or Caleb Williams said they not only have the best safeties, they have a hell of a D line, obviously, that y' all know about. And is Parsons now saying, like, they didn't mention his name when he said the D line. I. Parsons. I don't like him as. I don't. I just see the disrespect. What? I play for respect. You know how to earn someone's respect is by beating the shit out of him. No, you got to go out there and take it.
A
You play for a paycheck. Yeah. What you play for? Wait, so is he now? Was. Are you. Are you inferring that, or did he say that he's mad because he didn't say his name?
B
Well, that's just a guess.
A
Okay. I don't get it.
B
It's just a guess where he said, what is it? Every week, people question my worth. People try to belittle me and take away my name. When you're the best, that's what happens.
A
Who questions his word? I mean, that was, like. That was a huge trade for the Cowboys to the packers that none of us here in Chicago wanted to see happen. I mean, you couldn't be more respectful of that by not wanting it to happen. Like, if we didn't respect it, we'd say, shit, get him over to Green Bay. Let's go. We want him on Green Bay. But saying that you didn't want that trade, like, not. Not Green Bay, anywhere but Green Bay, Minnesota, Detroit. Keep him out of our division.
B
All right, here's the quote from Ben Johnson. We faced a number of good ones. The last one you really earmarked to a degree was Max Crosby. He was still able to affect the game quite a bit. Hutch was another one up in Detroit. We faced a number of them. We've got, obviously, both Micah and Rashawn Gary here this week.
A
Yeah, he forgot about T.J. watt, too.
B
Yeah, but still, like, is. Is. Is Parsons mad that he just was included in a list of other great pass rushers and he wasn't placed in a T? Like, what are we doing?
A
I don't know. I don't get it. But, you know, whatever he wants to. He wants to have that battle. He can have that battle. With whom? With the imaginary people Seriously, he's.
B
He has the disrespectful Bears or Bears fans or somebody. Just.
A
Who knows? I mean, maybe he reads social media comments and people are bothering him. Who knows? Who knows? I couldn't tell you, but I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss something from Caleb or from Ben Johnson or from Declan Doyle or Dennis Allen. I, you know, or any one of the Bears receivers or running backs or offensive linemen.
B
I mean, came out of nowhere.
A
Drew Dahlman say something disrespectful about, you know, did somebody's kid or somebody's wife. Jackson, say something?
B
Right, right.
A
Pillow say, I don't. I've never. Never heard of Micah Parsons. Darn. All right. Say, yeah, I'm not afraid of him. I can block him with one hand. I don't. I don't want. Like, what did I miss?
B
I don't know. I don't know. I just. I. That was my first thought, was I. Oh, I guess I missed something. Oh, boy. And my. And when I saw Parsons say what he said, I'm scouring everything looking for what I missed. You know, where did this come from? What has been construed as disrespectful? And. And why do you. And I didn't find anything.
A
What's going on with. Between LaFleur and. And Ben Johnson? Like, what is. Is LaFleur seriously upset about what Ben Johnson said at the press conference or. You know, but I like. I like beating LaFleur a couple times. I mean, is he really upset? Is he playing a part of the bits? Is it just two guys who maybe know each other more than I think they know each other and are just having fun back and forth.
B
That's why I asked Courtney Cronin about it yesterday, that I. I guess there's just no good answer for any of this stuff. At least, you know, when it was Ditka and Forrest, Greg, we out there.
A
In front of you, they hated each other. Right. And they said legitimately about it. Yes.
B
And they'd mf each other across the sidelines during games, and they wouldn't shake each other's hand. And that was. At least you knew that that was real.
I. I don't know. I don't know if Micah Parsons is hearing some stuff from the. Whatever is living in his bedroom closet that is sneaking out at night and whispering to him. Okay.
A
Yeah. I just. I don't get. I mean, if you want to talk about disrespect, I mean, I think the. The Bears and they're not Playing into this because they don't care. And Ben Johnson is about one game at a time. But if they're not being respected at all, I mean, if you. If you look at it, oh, they've beaten bad quarterbacks, they've beaten bad teams, but they just went and kicked the shit out of Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, on a short week of rest and a short week of preparation, they manhandled the defending champions. It wasn't a game that they won by one play or there was one bad call or one missed assignment. They beat them from start to finish on the road.
B
They beat Fangio.
A
Yeah. If anyone thinks that the Bears can't go to Lambeau and do the same goddamn thing, then I don't know what you're watching this year. I just. I just don't get it.
B
They can. It doesn't. It doesn't mean they will, but they certainly doesn't. They certainly can. And the other thing, too, about. And even from the Bears side of it, that why would the Bears be all muscly right now? Because the packers have kicked the shit out of them. It hasn't. It hasn't been a rivalry.
A
It has not been a rivalry. We've talked about this yesterday. It has not been a rivalry. It's about two teams that are really old that play each other a lot. That's really what it's been. What. What is. What was Aaron Rodgers Like, 25 and 5 or 25 and 4? It wasn't a rival. It hasn't been a rivalry. We're setting itself up that maybe it will be a rivalry. Now, they split last year. The Bears win the last game of the season on the road at Lambeau. Now, here you have two games in three weeks with the division on the line. Now it's time to, like, put up. Put up right now. If you're really a good team, a legitimate team, Bears go out and do it. The packers, if you are the class of the division, then show that. Show that on Sunday. But here's the thing, though, Dan. The Bears have absolutely nothing to lose with this game on Sunday. They have nothing to lose. And I know I haven't been, you know, siding with this whole idea of. All right, well, they've exceeded expectations. It's been a successful year. Ben Johnson, his first run. They're at nine wins. I started talking about, let's look at the playoffs. Let's talk about a Super Bowl. Like, we're here right now. You know, next season is not promised. You just don't know. Look at the commanders you just don't know what can happen. Look at the Vikings. You just don't know what can happen to you from season to season. But the Bears should go into Lambeau with confidence and with the whole notion of they have nothing to lose. They shouldn't be here right now. Right. That's what everyone's saying. They shouldn't be on top of the NFC North. They shouldn't be the number one seed in the nfc. It's all house money. Go out there, play your damn game. Have fun. Let the game plan dictate how Ben Johnson calls the plays, how Dennis Allen lines up his players, who he uses for different assignments, different packages. Go out there and play some football. Have fun with it. And you know what? Along the way, beat the Packers. How fun would that be? Right?
B
And I know that we're going to get into how, how they're going to actually do that. And I do think that what sets up as far as the way the, the packers and is it Jeff Halfley? I was going to confuse.
A
Yeah, Halfley. Correct.
B
Okay. Hefley is the name from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Right? Is his name Greg? Is it Hefley or Hely?
A
I don't. I'm gonna have.
B
I think that's the name from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. But I'm, I'm thinking way, way back to when Jason was much younger and read some of that stuff. So they run a. It's Obviously, it's a 43 hybrid. There's a lot of single high safety. And if we were looking for a place to get, to start, to get a little bit of closure when it comes to all the debate we've been having about Caleb Williams and being accurate on the, the opportunities that they get on some of these downfield chunks in difficult conditions, you're going to have the chance these. There are going to be some throws there to be made and they will press on the edges, they will play some aggressive man to man schemes and they don't blitz very much.
A
Blitz rates is about 18%. So.
B
And that's when you have Micah Parsons and Rashad Gary. Oh, sorry, Micah. Micah. Listen, Micah, we understand that they don't have to blitz much because of you, because you're very good.
A
Yeah. Don't put Rashawn Gary in the same sentence.
B
Oh, sorry. That could be construed as disrespect too. But. So what I'm looking at in this game is going to be.
How they arrange to get good releases off the line. How do you do that well, you can use bunches, you can use stacks, you can make it difficult to find that third guy in who's coming off the slot or and or someone in motion who ends up in the back of a group. And when they break out of that grouping designed to get a guy an unjammed release. There's also switch releases. I'm seeing a ton of that going on against man defenses of watching guys do a very quick exchange in their get off to force a decision in a man defense. There's going to be all of that and Ben Johnson is going to have an opportunity to show off some of this stuff. But also what I hope is that Johnson doesn't fall into a very, very common trap that a lot of offensive, a lot of play callers get into. And that is you can call it abandoning the run or getting pass happy. Do not do that. I want him to have somebody, we've talked about this, have somebody, it might be a quality control guy just who can mention at the end of a quarter or at the end of X number of drives or X number of plays once you're done with the scripted stuff to say hey it's been a while since you run the ball. Just make sure you're pounding, pounding, pounding, pounding with the run. You know you do it well. And yes, there's going to be play action chances, there's going to be all sorts of counters and you're going to have to make those plays. But do not get discouraged if you feel like you're running into a wall in a little bit of time, keep pounding away because that you can take the starch out of a defense and it might not pay dividends until your penultimate drive or your final drive.
A
Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing how they actually game plan to utilize some run plays at Micah Parsons to utilize the fact that the middle of the defensive line for the packers with Devontae Wyatt being out and a couple rookies in there having opportunities with very limited snaps throughout this year to kind of fill that hole, fill that void, take advantage of that, take advantage of that and run, run the football. Now Ben Johnson even said that he probably should have run more, got away from the run against Philadelphia more than he probably should have looking back on it and passed more even in opportunities with the weather that it wasn't really a great time to pass the ball. So I hope there's a focus on it because I think they can run the football down the packers throat with the injuries with some smart game planning and what they've already set up and what they've put on tape already. I want to see what other compliments they have off of play action or other run plays or pass plays that they've already presented. The Packers, I said we've already said that they blitz. They're light on the blitz at 18%. They're also very light on having a heavy box. They are in sub package about 60% of the time as well too. So there are going to be opportunities for this offensive line which has been eating to eat this Sunday against Green Bay and take advantage of that. And I hope they do. I really hope they do. I would love to see them run the football. Run the football and then attack. With Caleb in really prime opportunities for.
B
Him to be successful and watching how they use some man beaters when it comes to the play calling, we've seen a lot of stuff that are really successful against zone. We saw the flood concept that allowed for the Cole Comet touchdown pass in the last game. They're gonna have to buy time. We know that Kayla Williams can buy himself time if need be to get people vertical, certainly against zones. But if they're going against man and there's some of these picks and some of these rubs they and mesh concepts with a lot of crossers where they. What do we call. What do we learn from Tim Jenkins when he was talking about Samurai and Machete.
A
Machete.
B
Yep. And understanding that that concept of the deep crosses that they're going to be there that these throws, they got to know how to sell it. And I think Kemet has been pretty good at this, especially as important as he is as the wide tight end in being the guy that gets in the way. Just don't get called for Opi. You know, don't. Was it Pickens last night that we were watching? Did a terrible job of trying to make it look like you're getting into a pattern when there's always picks that go on. You just have to not give an official a reason to the it looks obvious that you're not trying to get out in a pattern, but we haven't seen a lot of that tested but we're going to.
A
I misspoke to earlier. The packers. Sorry. The packers are about in a sub package about 68% of the time. So almost. Almost 70% of the time. So there are going to be those opportunities to run with a light box with a sub package. You got the dimes or the nickels out there. You're going to be able to run that football and I hope they take advantage of that. I just, I want Caleb to be at his best for this game, to be able to take advantage of those opportunities that are presented through the passing game off of what they developed through the run game here this, this Sunday. I really want them to take advantage of that weakened defensive line for the packers by running the football just right, right down the middle of the field.
B
Well, I also think too, that in their base defense, some designed quarterback run opportunities are going to be there for them just, just numbers wise, that if, if everybody is distributed across the field in the way that I picture when you describe it, that you'll have an advantage. And if you, especially if you're bringing somebody around with some of the counter actions that they can run and hell, we don't even know what's still unleashed. We're still waiting to be unleashed in the playbook.
A
Right.
B
I like to think that Ben Johnson is feeling now. Okay. All right. We've been waiting on this. It's time for this. We've been waiting on that. It's time for that. Stuff they've been practicing and stuff that will make it onto the sheet for this game that hasn't in the past.
Let's get it.
A
Yeah, no, I'm looking forward to seeing what, what happens, how it develops. That play last night, there was. Since you brought it up, it was in my brain. There was a pass interference call in the red zone against the Cowboys. One of the receivers might have been Pickens against.
Your, your guy anal zone, which was. I, I didn't think. Was not offensive pass interference at all.
B
No, that was a bad call.
A
He did a swim. He did the swim move to get inside. That was an awful call and it was absolutely awful call.
B
Yeah, Sean Hockey was making that. The Sean Hockey show last night.
A
Yeah, that, that's. That should have been the Cowboys ball at the, at the one yard line or whatever they do when it's in the end zone like that.
B
He had his mic on the whole game. It was like having an extra person in the booth. But, you know, he doesn't cut quite.
A
Yeah, I thought it was weird. He was doing play by play at one point.
B
That's what it sounded like. I mean, he was being very officious.
A
And there goes Gibbs down the sideline.
B
Like, turn your mic off, Sean. Sean, turn the mic off. Got Gibbs. It's unbelievable, by the way.
A
Yeah, he is.
B
He's. Although, did you see his spin move for no reason? I loved it. At one point he, at one point he made. He made a Spin move. And he ended up in exactly the same place and people were kind of.
A
Looking at him again and it's just like, you know, the Cowboys have gone in, they went in that game last night on a three game winning streak, I believe. Believe ever since the trade deadline they made those moves. They're three and oh, and then the Lions look like the Lions. We thought we'd see more this year. And it's just this up and down performances. It's just, it's like you watch that Lions game last night, you're like, shit, man, how do you stop those guys? Like, what do you do? And then, you know, they'll come out the week later and they'll barely be able to move the ball. It's just what a, what a frustrating season at times, watching who's going to show up each week.
B
We got some breaking injury news right here and I'm glad that we were able to get this in here on forward progress. The Bears have ruled Rome Adunze out.
A
Oh, wow.
B
Sunday, Roma Dunes A has a foot injury and will not play. TJ Edwards is listed without an injury designation. He's good to go. Tyreek Stevenson is out with a hip injury and Reuben Hippolyte the second is out with a shoulder injury. But the big news there, Edwards is back. That's good. Roma Dunze out. That's bad.
So that's going to mean more Olamide Zacchaeus.
A
Yep.
B
And. Or. And I'm. I would prefer that we see more 12 personnel, more of one running back, two tight ends and just the two wideouts then in burden and DJ Moore.
A
Yeah, no, I'm down with that. And they started the game last week in the eagles and that 12 personnel with. With. With both Colston and, and Cole on. On the field. So yeah, let's. Let's do that. Let's. Let's run that.
B
Wow.
A
Yeah, that's. That's not something you wanted to hear.
B
So more here. No injury designation. Like as I mentioned for Edwards, Noah Sewell, no injury. That same goes for Dominique Robinson, Andrew Billings, Kyle Manungai or Jalen Johnson. So those three names, A Dunes, A. Stevenson and Hippolyte all out.
A
So Sewell's in Dom Rob's Inn.
B
Yep. Okay. I don't know what a difference that makes.
A
And Billings is. He's all good to go to run.
B
It's a sprint.
A
Yes. Okay. You know what?
B
I don't know if it was because of the foot injury, but I mean a. Dunze's impact has certainly been lessened since the start of the season since he came out gangbusters like the first five games.
A
Well, yeah, I think he had five touchdowns right away. And then was it two weeks ago after his dad complained or three weeks ago then he had like the 10, 10 or lots of targets, didn't he? Wasn't it that, that following game after all the social media stuff with it with his dad. And then since then it's been very, very limited, very light, still being impactful on the run game, blocking downfield, obviously. But yeah, I think it was two, two games ago he had all those targets after his dad said that his son doesn't get enough looks.
B
So.
A
But since then, yeah, he has been, he has been limited as far as the past game is concerned.
B
Well, that's certainly fascinating and it's going to change the way this team attacks some things. But my hope is that, that this will be either the Luther Burden game in the, in the history of the packers rivalry or the Colston Loveland game.
A
Or maybe DJ Moore steps up to the plate. Be nice, has himself a game.
B
It'll be nice.
A
Speaking of having himself a game, there was a guy that had himself a month.
B
Yeah. How about it?
A
I think the NFL office has heard, they've, they must listen to the show as you've been pining for Nishan Wright to get a game ball. He finally gets a game ball and an apology from Ben Johnson for not doing it sooner. And then Nishan Wright is named the NFC defensive player for the month of November. So congratulations to Nishan Wright. That's very, I was very happy to hear that when that was announced.
B
It's a big deal for him for a guy who signed a prove it deal. An afterthought deal.
A
Yes.
B
Nobody knew who he was. And, and, and we were kind of making fun during camp. Oh, no. Sean Wright's making plays out there like. Oh yeah, like Zach Bowman used to. Here's another series of reports about some Chicago Bear who's going to end up on having a great training camp. And I'll be damned. Maybe it does say that we're in a little bit of a different era when somebody like that becomes not just a viable player, but a likely Pro Bowler.
A
Right. A key part to their success here this year. And remember, just go back to the very first game, that Monday night Vikings game. We were texting like I would throw that guy's side every time. Every time. Throw it to Sean. Right. Throw it to Sean. Right. And then once you do, he picked one off and he ran it back to the, to the, to the house for along pick six. And he's like, all right, you think that that's how I'm going to play this year? This is what I'm going to do for you. I'm going to pick it off, I'm going to take it back, and I'm going to keep getting turnovers and interceptions this entire season.
B
So I'm really happy for him. And I think his success story also, it sets up the coaching staff and the scouting staff, too. If you're an agent, if you're a free agent and you look at a team and say, will I get a fair shot there? What I love about what this Ben Johnson coach team has done is whether it's Theo Benedict or Nishan Wright or whoever else it's been, they're not worried about, you know, where from where you started or why. If you're on the roster and you are there and healthy and playing, you've got a shot to prove yourself. And you're going to get any number of chances that if you, when you really are running a meritocracy and you don't have these sort of accusations of favoritism or being someone's guy or not someone's guy, and if you're not, if somebody already isn't, have a reputationally invested in you, it sells your program really well. To say, when we say we want the best football player or we want a competition, a position to prove it like that in that regard is. It's great advertising.
A
No, it absolutely is. And I think it really shows from everything Ben Johnson has talked about, when we heard him with the media, talking about how our guys aren't. They're not practicing hard enough during the week, you know, who's going to work during the week to get themselves into the game plan. Remember, that goes back to week three. And that was a question about Luther and about, about Colston, and then he turned that into a whole statement about the entire team that who's going to work hard, who's going to practice hard to get themselves into the game plan this week. And that shows that if you, regardless of your pedigree, where you came from, what your, what your resume says, if you're on this roster, if the general manager puts you on this roster, you have a contract, you're there each week to practice and show yourself able to play on Sundays, you're going to have that opportunity. I think it's great. And it really shows that not only about Ben Johnson and how he's running the organization but also the coaching staff he has in place. What these guys are doing to coach guys up week after week. And we're seeing it on the defensive side with injuries and reserves come in and reserves of reserves come in and make plays. So it's a hell of a coaching job from top to bottom for the Chicago Bears this season.
B
I know George McCaskey gave his. His rookie presentation this week regarding the packers rivalry, but why we hate the Packers. Well, to be clear, apparently there is a rookie symposium of some kind or a rookie edification meeting in every week. It just so happens that the guest speaker was that for Packer week. This is when you, as a Bears rookie, learn a bit about the history. And I don't think George goes in there and with face paint on or brings Don Wachter with him dressed.
A
I like the thing that he does.
B
Though, and says, well, you have to win no matter what. I don't think they do that. But I do think that there should be a historical understanding of the. The feet of the footsteps in. In which you're walking. And the truth is, whether we like it or not, or whether we make fun of the idea of this or not, that your name does get remembered as a Bear. When you do stuff against the packers, for better or for worse, Chris Conti, his name is gonna. Gonna live. And everybody remembers it was Brian Robinson that blocked that kick.
A
Yeah, but how does it, how does it impact their names when you have guys who are forever known for being a Chicago Bear or have gone and played for the Green Bay Packers?
B
Oh, because that happens.
A
I think I know.
B
But whether it's.
A
Or Steve Michael. But so what does that do to the whole. Oh, my God. This hatred is rivalry. We, you know, hate the packers and, you know, beat every. You know, you can go 2 and 15 or 2 and 14 as long as you beat the packers. But then a guy who wins you the super bowl and one of your best defensive players ever played for the fucking Packers?
B
Yeah, well, it happens.
A
Doesn't that diminish a little bit of the rivalry?
B
And of course it does. But. But regardless, though, it's still. We still remember the names. We still, you know, those of us at a certain time. What I remember.
A
Martin. Yeah.
B
Do you remember the name Mark Lee?
A
Mark Lee? Not a tight end, was he? No, no.
B
Was it Mark. Wasn't Mark Lee the defensive guy back that. That took Walter Payton out of bounds like 15 yards? Just rode.
A
I think you're.
B
Rode him directly out of bounds and threw him over the bench?
A
Yeah. I think you're right.
B
You know, why would I remember the name Mark Lee? Or was it, you know, with the wide receiver Philip Epps, who scored an impossible touchdown over Bears cornerback Terry Schmidt, that you just. Some of these things are seared into memory because it's this game.
A
And wasn't it the magic man that crossed the. It was an illegal pass. He crossed the line of scrimmage, and the refs didn't call it.
B
Yeah, he did. Although what we're learning about that call and that damn safety call last night.
A
It was Mark Lee.
B
Yeah, Mark Lee. Mark Lee was the guy that. Watch that play again, by the way, and imagine that happening now. And seriously, watch that whole play and tell me that wouldn't be a week of conversation, a full week of conversation nationally, that. That would be a national conversation about.
A
Oh, imagine if Charles Martin play happened right now.
B
Oh, my God.
A
If someone. If someone did that to Caleb Williams. Patrick Mahomes.
B
Right. And then wrote. And then wrote it crossed off the guy's uniform number that he had on a hit list written on a towel on his waist.
A
Oh, my God.
B
Seriously? That happened?
A
Yep. Crazy.
B
And it ruined his career.
A
Yeah. Oh, yeah. That means arm was never the same.
B
That ruined Jim McMahon's career.
Remember that? He got it and he had the shoulder and he had it operated on eventually. He never could throw the same.
A
Whatever happened to Martin for that season, I couldn't try to look it up. But, like, the fact that if he ever played again, that's just insane to me. Yeah. Somebody would show that the dirtiest play.
B
You know what? Actually, now that I think about it, somebody should sit Micah Parsons down and say, listen, you want to see disrespect and bad blood? You want to see what it looks like. Weirdo. Where you have to find things and pull these little threads out of the ether so you can infer some degree of disrespect.
They used to actually wear the disrespect literally written on them. Oh, that's what disrespect looks like.
A
I remember hearing, you know, Doug talk about what would happen at the bottom of piles during packers week. Like, guys biting each other and grabbing their balls like you're at the bottom of pile and like, the shit that's happening there shouldn't be happening.
B
Grabbing their own balls or grabbing.
A
Grabbing their own balls and being like, look at them. Grab my own balls.
B
Why are you doing that at the bottom of the pile? I don't know.
A
Well, on top of you. So it's like, I don't know.
B
My wife gets mad when I do it at home. I figure I might as well do it at work.
A
Get off of me while you're doing that. But I mean, the stuff that he would talk about, it just. You want to. Yeah. You want to talk about disrespectful and not playing within the confines of the game. That's what you're talking about. Yeah. When they watch that hit Charles Martin on Jim McMahon, and if you're too young to know what it is, several seconds after the ball was released, the play was over and dead. Martin grabbed him and body slammed into the turf. The stories they used to tell his arm.
B
The stories used to tell about Ray Nichi. I remember being a reporter when the. The afternoon show, I think, was doing a Friday Bears packers preview at Lambo in a bar, and I was up there early to be part of that show and do a bunch of reporting. And. Oh, God, I'm trying to remember. It's all a blur to me. But Ray Nitschke was at this bar.
A
Oh, boy.
B
And it was before he was going to do his little. But that. That's Ray Nitschke.
A
So was this. Was this Terry and.
B
I think so. Or it might have. It might have been.
A
Or was it the.
B
It might have been the Sunday. It might have been the Sunday pregame. But McNeil was there as part of the Sunday pregame. I don't remember exactly what it was. I think McNeil was there and Ray Nitschke is there. And I was talking to him before he went, and we were like in a commercial, and like, he was still kind of scary. Like, that was. He was an old guy. So this is 95 or 96, but that's still Ray Nitschke. Yeah, that's an old man. And I'm looking at him like he's some sort of fairy tale ogre. Like, really, like, should I go near him? I don't want to look at him funny, you know, because that's. He's going to do it. And. But he, you know, he leaned into it and he played.
A
But.
B
And he was certainly a gruffer, tougher actual dude off the field than a guy like Buffone or some of these other guys that could completely turn off the switch. I think his. He had access to the Neanderthal gene where it would. It would blur a little bit easier than some others.
A
Well, I don't think he really had access to it. Like Doug had access to it. So he could use it, he could turn it off. He could get into It.
B
He was smart Hulk.
A
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
B
Certain football players can be smart Hulk.
A
Yeah. He had the ability to turn that gene offer on. I don't think Nichi had that ability to control it. It was just kind of.
B
That was one of my very, very, very few times kind of being starstruck just because he was so much of. Of a. Of just a. A legendary myth, like a mythical creature. It was like. It was like meeting like a centaur or something.
A
I got the first time I was ever significantly starstruck was one of the super bowl trips, and we had Joe Montana on. And I remember Joe Montana walking over to the table, and I remember thinking, oh, my God, I'm talking to Joe Montana.
B
And then how did you feel after?
A
And then when he. Other than bored, I was like, okay, I think we're done. I think we're good, Joe. I think hello was enough. You can. You can go kick rocks, bro, because that was awful. It was like, all right, what are you. What are you selling again? Get that out of your mouth. And then let's move, because we don't need to interview you. That was fucking horrible.
B
So bad.
A
It was so bad.
B
And that was him in sales mode.
A
Yes.
B
That was him being like, I have gastroesophageal reflux disease.
A
Like, I don't know if we needed to put drinks in him to get him going or something was going on. But that went. Man, that was so disappointing.
B
All right.
A
We had the Rock. Dwayne the Rock Johnson. That was a moment. I was starstruck and lived up to every single bit of it. He couldn't have been.
B
He was great.
A
He was awesome.
B
I know. And then he, like, kept thanking everybody, like, over thanking people and giving everybody hugs.
A
The handshake hug thing, I got. I remember I was like, oh, my God, I just got hugged by the Rock. Yeah, that was it. Phil Jackson, also starstruck with Phil Jackson. That was. But that was cool.
B
But, like, the Bears, packers stuff, when it was. Because. And. And what's weird is one of the great Bears, packers memories. And I don't know why we're sort of getting into this, right? But why not, right? You're already hanging out, and it's cold outside. So the last game in 1983, when they finished 8. 8. And. And Bob Thomas kicks the field goal to win it, and the season ended, and we're all. They were. It was. It was very cold. It was incredibly cold. And we're all sitting there, and the Bears won, and they were. They were 8 and 8. And we're like, you know, that was pretty good year. That wasn't terrible. And it wasn't just like they beat the packers, but the feeling was, all right, this could be something. And it carried over through the off season. And then 84 happened, which in some ways. Please don't misconstrue this. In some ways was. Was more thrilling in 84 than 85 even, because 85 just seemed fait accompli from jump.
A
Yeah.
B
And was. 84. Didn't. 84 was the year of. Ooh, this is a thing. That was the year when the Raiders game. That's still my favorite game that I've ever been to. My favorite sporting event I think I've ever been to. And I've been to Bulls championship games, and I've been to World Series game Sevens. But the Bears Raiders 17 to 6 massacre. The physical, that was like being at the Roman Coliseum, just watching what was. What was being done and bones breaking and. And, you know, Jim McMahon got his kidney lacerated and every quarterback on the Raiders got a concussion. And it was. That's when Ray Guy was hiding because he didn't want to go in the game as the emergency quarterback. And that's when you knew, like, oh, boy, this team might be really good.
A
Yeah. So obviously the. The super bowl game was that. That for me was like, no, but it wasn't.
B
It wasn't a but.
A
But I didn't want it to be a game. I wanted to be, you know, a complete domination party. And it was. It was amazing. It was.
B
It was to. To me, the.
A
The.
B
The Raiders win the year before just to. To. To young fan me was better like leaving that game. And it just. The bloodlust and the. It was like the crowd in Slap Shot when they're. They're. They're just making fun of it like, this is hockey. Everybody's beating everybody and they're bleeding like that. It was that feeling leaving that. That day in the 84 season, just.
A
Like, hey, I want to take. I want to just take you on a little. A little look back here through history. The. I pulled up some numbers, the quarterbacking numbers for the Bears compared to Caleb this year, okay, through 12 games. And I looked at the 2006, 2007 season when the Bears went to the super bowl, lost to Peyton Manning and the Colts. Your quarterback was Rex Grossman. And then the 85 season. So 85, 86, that is a season for quarterbacking that features Jim McMahon, Steve Fuller, who came in and finished a couple games, started A couple games. And actually Mike Tomczak got some actual throws, too, before the season ended in 85. So just looking at quarterbacking numbers for all three through 12 games, the Bears currently right now are nine and three. Rex Grossman, season, they were 10 and two. And of course, the Bears were. Were 12, zero at that point in the year. Caleb Williams is currently at 58.1% on the season. Rex Grossman through 12 games was 54.2%. And McMahon Fuller, the McMahon Fuller combo were 57.
B
Okay.
A
Okay. So Caleb's the highest. All right. If you look at yards. Yards. Caleb Williams, 27, 22.
B
Okay.
A
Rex Grossman, 24, 24 and 85. Duo of McMahon and Fuller, 24, 37. So Caleb with more yards.
B
Okay.
A
Yards per completion. Yards per completion. Caleb Williams, 11.8. Rex Grossman slightly higher at 12.2. And the 85 team slightly higher at 13.5. The only thing that, that Caleb is lower than right now, but just, just, just a bit yards per game. Caleb at 226. Rex was 202. 85. They were 203.
Let's look at touchdowns. Caleb currently had 17 touchdowns. Rex had thrown 18 through 12 games, and McMahon and Fuller had thrown 13. You know how many touchdowns they threw that entire season? Bears quarterbacks, regular season, 16 games.
B
In 16 games, the Bears quarterbacks threw 20.
A
Seventeen. Really? Yes, 17. That's it. Seventeen total touchdowns thrown.
B
How many times does a defense score, though?
A
Caleb Williams, five interceptions right now. Rex Grossman through 12 games had through thrown 17 interceptions. And the 85 team, through nine interceptions. Caleb has been sacked 19 times. Rex Grossman 14 times through 12. And then 85, 19 sacks. So the same as Caleb right there. The point differential for the Bears right now through 12 games, plus six.
B
Okay.
A
And I know there's been a lot of talk of that.
B
Yep.
A
But I want to just take a look at two current teams that are leading their division. But let's.
B
Let's do +6. What were. What was the 06 team?
A
Okay, the 06 team, they were at this point, they were +168.
B
And the 85 team was +258.
A
Okay. All right, Listen, hang on a second, though. There's something more to add now. Sorry. No, it's fine. No, the 2006. 2007 team, I said they were plus 168 through 12.
B
Yep.
A
They finished, Dan, plus 172. So they were plus four in their final four games. The 85 team, they were plus 258 in their final four games, they finished a plus 26.
B
Okay.
A
Okay, so we'll see what the Bears get to do here in their final five games, but currently sit at plus six. The Buccaneers at negative 22, the Panthers at negative 60. Right now, both at seven. And so seven, five, seven and six in there in the. In the division. So the Bears at plus six. I. I know we can talk about where they're at and how it might be an indicator of something more or it's just. That's how the game's played out, whatever, but.
B
And how much the game has changed and how much rules change, what the expectations are and all that.
A
But we. I'm not. I'm not trying to share anything with you that. Oh, my God. The 85, 86 team was. Was great as far as defensively speaking. 11 times, Dan. They held teams to 10 points or less. 11. 11 times. Okay.
B
Yeah, they. They murdered everybody.
A
Like, hang on. Games, people missing limbs. Games. 10, 11 and 12 of the season. 10, 11 and 12. This is the Lions, the Cowboys and the Falcons. They gave up how many points?
B
Well, I know they shut out the Falcons because that was the Henry Wachter game they gave.
A
That was three. Three points.
B
That was the Henry Wachter safety.
A
They give up three. Three points in three games. Lions, Cowboys, Falcons. And I think that was the first time Gary Fencick said that he'd ever beaten the Cowboys, that he was ofer against the Cowboys. And I think that was a shutout, too. That. That was. That was 44 to nothing. 44 to nothing game.
B
That was 44 to nothing. Yeah, that's when. Oh, there were so many quarter in. That was that the Lions game where Joe Ferguson was killed.
Remember when Wilbur hit Joe? When.
A
Oh, my God. Yeah, I think it was when Ferguson.
B
Because he'd already killed Hipple. You know, there was another. Because Eric. He hit Eric Hipple where he put the crown of his helmet right into the back of his neck and knocked him out and picked up the ball and scored.
A
What year was it that Hartenstein that was destroyed?
B
Jaworski. That was 1980. It might have been 80. 81 either. Yeah, 80 or 80.
A
And like, he. Like his. His family felt that hit. No, like Unborn Jaworskis were like, holy. What was that?
B
And members of Unborn Jaworskis favorite bands of all time. Punk. Oh, hardcore thrash.
A
Oh, are they okay?
B
Yeah, no, they had to like, medevac him out of there, right? I mean, it was no, like 80.
A
The early 80s. They just dragged you off to the side, didn't they? And they kept playing.
B
Yeah, they get. What did McMahon say? Tape a couple aspirin to your helmet and give you the smelling salt. But then Ferguson was rolling right and Wilbur Marshall was moving at 100 miles an hour. Ferguson throws the ball and there's a good half a second before Wilbur again. Crown of the helmet. Crown of the helmet directly onto his chin. And he was out cold before he hit the ground.
A
Oh yeah, he's falling past.
B
Falling dead out. Gone deceased. That.
A
Yeah. So just kind of look here. And again, I know this all goes off to. Ben Johnson's not satisfied with the passing game and all of the elements of the passing game. It's not just a thing on Caleb Williams, but here we have. And you know, Rex Grossman was not the same pedigree or caliber of quarterback that Caleb Williams is and was coming into the league. And Rex did have some, some weeks there. I mean he had some 400 yard games and 300 yard games.
B
Well, he was an MVP candidate for a while.
A
And then dud the last game of the season. I think he had like four completions or four attempts for like 30 yards. It was something. I mean, I can't remember what that last game was, but it was just brutal.
B
Well, that was, that was the, the we are who they thought they were game when he, when he was.
A
Oh, he had four interceptions in that game. Yeah, but that was like the middle of the season. Yeah, he had four, four picks in that game. Wasn't the only game. He threw four picks that season though too. And I know Jim McMahon and Steve Fuller, Mike Tomczak, Rex Grossman, not the same caliber pedigree of what Caleb Williams is coming into the league still ahead of those, that, that pace right there. Again, we know, and we've said this, that he needs to be better. There's going to be opportunities and maybe it's on Sunday that he's going to have to throw some passes to help the Bears win this game. I know he can do it. I know he has it in him. I know he can be more consistent in the passing game. And it isn't going to be this week, but it's going to be a time and maybe a couple games and maybe it's just the entire playoffs. He's going to have to show up better in the passing game as the quarterback of the Bears.
B
We are, we are 49 hours away.
From the start of the game. About 49 hours and 45 minutes.
A
Yeah.
B
I don't know what I'm going to do for the next 49 hours.
A
I know. I'm just ready for it to be here.
B
Killing me.
A
I just thought that was a fun. A fun little look to see, like, where Caleb is at right now and where the Bears. The only other. You know, because it's not like we can go back and have to filter through so many opportunities. They played for a Super Bowl. There's only the two in the super bowl era. So he's ahead of pace in a lot of different areas.
B
So thank you for doing that. I'm glad you did that. But this is going to be the longest 49 hours and 45 minutes. This is worse than, like, waiting for your SAT results or, like, college applications and stuff. This. This is going to be a long couple of days. So what do we have? We've got the Bulls tonight and we've got. Well, this is big for a Tulane and North Texas tonight.
A
Oh, yeah, no, I'll watch. I'm gonna watch that. I'm. I'll check my phone and. What the score.
B
Listen, tell me what you think of the North Texas quarterback. Okay. This guy Mesta Maker.
A
Yeah, I'm looking forward to watching that.
B
Tell me. And I. I don't know what. What Jason and Layla, if they. If they bet on this because they're. It's not Jason's alma mater yet, but.
A
Yeah, I think they did. And they would swap jobs. So she would do OWC on Tuesdays with you, and then he gets to do middays with Marshall and Mark.
B
Oh, God, would he love that?
A
Oh, they wouldn't.
B
No.
A
Well, show starts at 9. He'll walk in at 9. 15. Right. With a concussion. Sup, fellas? Got my heart in my guardian helmet on. Bleeding out of his head.
B
Dude.
Wearing. Wearing his. His, like, plaid pajama pants.
Slides. Yeah. And a Javante green jersey with all.
A
Of the jerseys at once, like a.
B
Pink hoodie on top.
A
Oh, boy.
B
Yeah. So there's. There's going to be that. And then we've got the Big Ten championship for, you know, Heisman purposes and everything. Indiana, Ohio State tomorrow. And, oh, and then it's like, we got to wait till 3:25 on Sunday.
A
Yeah.
B
All right, now also, listen, after that game forward progress is going to be live with all the reaction you need. And still figure out how and why Micah Parsons feels somehow disrespected by nothing but praise and adulation.
A
Maybe they should talk about him.
B
I. I don't know what he wants. What do you want, man? Do you want a special. Do you want us. You want FIFA to make up a special award where they give you a medal? We could do that.
