You'Re thinking Forward Progress. Come on. 219.
Dan Bernstein
219. Forward progress a Chicago Bears podcast with Dan Bernstein and Matt abetic cola on 312 sports. You are hereby awarded Forward Progress.
Matt Abeticola
And we are busy busy. We just finished up DBU and I mentioned if you want all the football stuff we have put it all here because as we get closer to the super bowl there is a lot going on. We had the annual State of the League address yesterday by Roger Goodell and jobs and hall of Fame voting and Bears stuff. So you're in the right place.
Dan Bernstein
Yep, lots of things for you here on Forward Progress. And again, reminder to you, we will keep Forward Progress Growing going every day throughout the entire office. Growing.
Matt Abeticola
You're not wrong.
Dan Bernstein
Yes, as we get our bro growing too we'll have Ford progress every day for you. So you're saying, well, what's going to happen during the off season? Well, this. A daily show. A daily football slash Bears show. We, of course, will concentrate and keep our focus on our Chicago Bears as they prepare for the super bowl season of 2026.
Matt Abeticola
There it is. I hear you.
Dan Bernstein
Yep. Yes, sir. But we'll keep it here for you every day and we will talk with some guests and have people on and do some things.
Matt Abeticola
And we'd have to figure out, too, how we're actually going to get you ready. We haven't really talked about the game, and I know it's only Tuesday, but we've got these days to figure out how to talk about how the Seahawks are likely going to motorboat the Patriots.
Dan Bernstein
They're going to motorboat them for sure. I have it as at least.
Matt Abeticola
I can't beat him. I got to join him. I have to thank you. I'm going to Finally.
Dan Bernstein
I'm like 21 weeks.
Matt Abeticola
I know. I'm not going to fight it anymore. I made the decision. If we're going to go with Motor bro, we're going to go with Motor Bro.
Dan Bernstein
Our audience, our friends, they've caught on as well, too. They're no longer correcting me. They're joining me on the motorboating.
Matt Abeticola
It's boat race, Maddie, not motorboat. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
That hasn't happened in, like, eight weeks. So it's been a thing now. So I'm glad you joined the party.
Matt Abeticola
I'm fine.
Dan Bernstein
I think the Seahawks are going to motorboat them. I got by at least. I'm going to say at least 17, so at least two typ. Two touchdowns and a few.
Matt Abeticola
I thought you were going to go 10.
Dan Bernstein
At least 17. I might be up at 21 before the end of the week.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. Okay.
Dan Bernstein
I just, you know, I, you know.
Matt Abeticola
I like waiting for those DBU picks on Friday.
Dan Bernstein
I like my doppelganger. I like him a lot. I think he's a good coach. I think, you know, Drake May's got potential to be something, something special in this league.
Matt Abeticola
But not this week.
Dan Bernstein
Not this week. And I'm taking Seattle by at least 17. I'll get the final number by Friday.
Matt Abeticola
Picks.
Dan Bernstein
So we did hear from Roger Goodell yesterday. Roger Goodell, by the way, is the. He's the commissioner of the NFL. I'm not sure if you were aware of that. You knew that.
Matt Abeticola
I did.
Dan Bernstein
I don't know if everyone else knew that, though.
Matt Abeticola
I think so.
Dan Bernstein
And, you know, Super Bowl Week he sits down and does a really nice conversation with reporters. And I wanted to pull three of the cuts there from, from old Roger. The first one was actually a quiet. I'm gonna include the question on this one because I liked the question from Judy Batista.
Matt Abeticola
She's great.
Dan Bernstein
NFL.com and this is her question for Roger Goodell.
Matt Abeticola
Last week, release of some of Jeffrey.
Dan Bernstein
Epstein's emails indicated repeated exchanges with Giants.
Matt Abeticola
Co owner Steve Tisch. To what extent will the NFL look.
Dan Bernstein
Further into those exchanges and could Steve.
Matt Abeticola
Tisch be subject to discipline under the personal conduct policy?
Roger Goodell
Well, you may be getting ahead of yourself on the second part, but I would say that absolutely, you know, we are going to look at all the facts. We're going, going to look at the context of those. We're going to try to understand that and we'll look at how that falls under the policy. But I think we take one step at a time. Let's get the facts first.
Dan Bernstein
Now I watched, I watched the video and the microphone was not completely shoved into his mouth. It just, for whatever reason, that was the quality of the NFL stuff and I've looked at different websites for it. It just sounded like his microphone was over modulated or something but, or he was eating it. One of the two. I didn't really like, I didn't really like his answer, you know, and, and I'm sure he would, he was, he was prepped on it and he's a smart guy. He knows how to, how to speak.
Matt Abeticola
And there was more. He, there were follow ups.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. But I just wanted to pull this one just so we could discuss it. As we started the discussion yesterday, I just, you know, and you know, he is right. But I did, I just didn't like the tone of don't get ahead of yourself. I think you're, you're getting a little bit ahead of yourself with the, with the second part. I would have just preferred an answer of, you know, we'll see where the facts take us and if that's the direction that the facts lead us, we'll deal with that. But we're certainly not there yet, you know, something along those lines because that to me, you know, and I try to hear things that are, that aren't said while they're being said. And it just sounded like to me that not much would happen.
Matt Abeticola
It sounds like we don't want to investigate him, we don't want to hold him accountable pursuant to our policy. But we know that as long as there's public sunlight on it, we're Going to have to act in some way that sounds like what that answer was from somebody who is there to protect ownership and protect the league. But he didn't stonewall. He did about as well as I would expect, considering who's advising him that anything that admits that there's an issue and admits that there is going to be a desire to know more. I think we got to take the dub.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, no, I agree. He didn't stonewall it, but I think, yeah, that, that tone. And of course it has to be that way because that's why he's there. He's not in charge of the league. He's. He's the guy that's there for the owners.
Roger Goodell
Well, you may get be getting ahead of yourself on the second part, but I would say that absolutely, you know, we are going to look at all the facts. We're going to. At the context of those. We're going to try to understand that and we'll look at how that falls under the policy. But I think we take one step at a time. Let's get the facts first.
Dan Bernstein
All right. He was also asked about the Rooney rule and the fact that of the 10 head coach openings this cycle, there was one minority higher.
Roger Goodell
We need to continue to make progress, and I believe that. I believe diversity is good for us. I think we have become a more diverse league across every platform, including coaching. But we still have more work to do.
Matt Abeticola
There's.
Roger Goodell
There's got to be more steps. So we're reevaluating everything we're doing, including our accelerated program, including every aspect of our policies and our programs, to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow rather than yesterday. So we, we need to be looking at that and sort of say, okay, why did we have the results this year? What is it that we can be doing in training or education? And that goes for not just the candidates, but also the clubs and how we can try to continue to increase the opportunities and the outcomes.
Matt Abeticola
Ultimately, we know the answers to these questions. Everybody pretends like we don't know the answers. The answers would be minority ownership. The answers would be people who in their actual lives have contact with people who don't look and sound exactly like them.
Dan Bernstein
Right.
Matt Abeticola
People who came up in areas of business that valued diversity instead of ran fearful of it. People who understood that it makes for good business. It is smart business to have the perspectives of people in your organization who look and sound like the world looks and sounds rather than trying to create a world that never really existed, that you think existed in marketing to that made up world. It's all very simple and the answers are right there. And he can talk around it all he wants, but the idea is making sure that there are opportunities for people to get out of their bubbles and get out of there and understand the way the world looks. And that varying opinions of varied backgrounds make for better business.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. And I'm just not quite sure that NFL ownership is even open to.
Matt Abeticola
They don't even understand what. They don't. They don't know what they don't know.
Dan Bernstein
Correct, Correct.
Matt Abeticola
And then they got rid of the accelerator program. And I believe he did admit that. Well, they clearly got scared and canceled it because they thought they had to, because they thought that they were gonna get extorted. And now there was an indication that they're going to bring back the accelerator program. So good, good on them and good on the NFL for understanding the value of that.
Dan Bernstein
And then Goodell, good old Roger, was asked about the potential of an 18 game schedule. So, you know, they moved to a 17 game schedule five years ago. 2021 added that 17th game. So asked about the. The possibility of an 18 game schedule.
Roger Goodell
Well, we're fortunate. We have quite a long CBA in front of us, but I think we have not had any formal discussions about it. And frankly, very little, if any, informal. I've heard people talk about it in the context. It is not a given that we'll do that. It is not something that we assume will happen. It is something that we want to talk about with the union leadership. As you know, they're going through a transition and hopefully that'll get solidified this spring. And as they determine their priorities, we are doing the same on the ownership level so that when we get together, we can address these issues together. And I think you remember in 2011, as part of the CBA, we committed to the players that we were going to have this conversation and we were going to talk about the pluses and minuses. We may move from 16 to 17. We had that conversation. I think that went quite smoothly. But the challenges will be different here a little bit. And it'll. It'll depend on a lot of factors, including safety of the game. What other changes can we make to the game that are going to continue to prove that from a safety standpoint, but also a competitive standpoint? Should we have two buys? What are the roster sizes? There are a number of issues that need to be discussed with the players and that I'm sure will be a focus or at least a component of the next CBA at least in the discussion phase. But there are a lot of things that I think are going to be on the table.
Dan Bernstein
So the current CBA expires March of 2031.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I like the way he handled that, too. Just saying it isn't just a unilateral decision to impose this. And essentially that's a way of saying, and slow your role. A lot of us have looked at, well, it's inevitable and this is just going to increase until there's 24 games. And I think he went out of his way to say it's not a done deal, it's not a given.
Dan Bernstein
Right. And again, nothing would be able to happen until after 2031. So we're still several years away from that even occurring. Well, it could.
Matt Abeticola
Right, but you don't have to wait until.
Dan Bernstein
I know, but, but they're not going to. I mean, you know, players union is not going to negotiate something of that, that, that's, that stature. I mean, that's significant prior, prior to.
Matt Abeticola
That expiry, unless there ends up being something they really, really want. And they say, look, we'll give you this if.
Dan Bernstein
How would you feel about an 18 game schedule with two buys?
Matt Abeticola
Fine. Okay.
Dan Bernstein
I mean, yeah, I know none of.
Matt Abeticola
This is sacrosanct to me.
Dan Bernstein
I know. But I hate, I hate bi weeks. As a fan, I hate them.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. But as a, as a podcaster, I kind of like them. I don't mind working and finding new and different things to talk about. Where you, you still have a season going. You still have the urgency of the season. And remember, the context is all different now that we think the Bears are good.
Dan Bernstein
And I like the idea of teams having an equal number of home and away games. That discrepancy kind of bothers me slightly.
Matt Abeticola
The round number is better.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Yeah. But a 20 week season with two buys and have the bear. I know. Bears off two weeks. I know, I know it is, but. But games aren't year round. I mean, baseball feels that way, but football's not games year round. The season's year round.
Matt Abeticola
Football makes a lot of money.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I know. Football's king.
Matt Abeticola
Yep.
Dan Bernstein
All right, so that's Roger Goodell. I just want to pull a few cuts.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I thought that we'll see if Judy Batista keeps her job because we know that people from NFL media, when they ask difficult questions of Roger Goodell, sometimes find themselves right out of work.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I was surprised it came from NFL.com.
Matt Abeticola
Well, Jim Trotter was the guy who was asking a lot of this stuff. But you know, it could have been worse. I usually don't expect much. My bar is pretty low. My standards are fairly low. Set for a Roger Goodell press conference.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, but could have been worse. Speaking of could have been worse, if.

Dan Bernstein
N rakuten.com New England Patriots were dealt another blow.
Matt Abeticola
Oh no.
Dan Bernstein
In their hall of Fame endeavor and activity. Yes.
Matt Abeticola
Now what this time?
Dan Bernstein
We learned earlier today that Robert Kraft has been denied the hall of Fame. He will not be making the hall of Fame this year. So Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick. So let me ask you this Colombo coincidence or is this deliberate?
Matt Abeticola
I don't know enough about the voting to declare that it's deliberate. My obviously. What do they say? Never assume, never attribute to malice. What can be more easily ascribed to stupidity, which is there's gotta be some corollary because the hall of Fame voting is weird. It may again be the presumption on behalf of the voters of Kraft is going to get in at some point. Let's take care of the last chance candidates first.
Dan Bernstein
So that argument, while viable, doesn't sound correct when it comes, in my opinion, correct to Bill Belichick or Robert Kraft.
Matt Abeticola
Do as many people dislike Robert Kraft as dislike Belichick?
Dan Bernstein
I just think it's the whole Patriot thing and the cheating and all the winning that they did for so many years, being on top of the of the hill for so long. I just think this is a shot at those guys because they couldn't get beat on the football field as often as people wanted. So here's a chance to throw a little punch at him and say hey, you may have been great on the Football field. But we're not letting you in this exclusive club right away. The whole idea that, yeah, eventually they'll get in if there are guys that should get in on their first try. Belichick is a guy that should, as an owner. Robert Kraft should, of course.
Matt Abeticola
And the problem is that the other names on this particular five person ballot.
Dan Bernstein
Right. It's not like you look at those names and go, oh my God, I'm in no hurry.
Matt Abeticola
How are they not in to put Ken Anderson in the hall of Fame?
Dan Bernstein
Right.
Matt Abeticola
I know. Is he local? He went to Augustana.
Dan Bernstein
Did he?
Matt Abeticola
Kenny Anderson went to Augusta. I remember he went to Augustana, but I don't know if he's more local than just sort of within the boundaries of the state of Illinois. Isn't August. Augustana is still in Illinois, right?
Dan Bernstein
Augustana. Yep. 67 to 70.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I remember that. But I don't remember where he's originally.
Dan Bernstein
From, but went to high school in Batavia.
Matt Abeticola
Okay. Yeah. So there's a local connection for Kenny Anderson and then Roger Craig, who was the first celebrated, you know, thousand yards receiving, thousand yards rushing, two way threat and LC Greenwood. How many people from that defense are going to be in the hall of Fame now?
Dan Bernstein
Right. And like, why is Roger Craig not in yet?
Matt Abeticola
I don't know, maybe they got him confused with the San Francisco Giants pitching coach.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, like, I don't know, like he should be towards the end of his availability. Right. I thought he kind of got in a little bit sooner. Yeah. But like again with the whole argument when it came to Belichick, was it last week? It was like, oh, we know he'll get in and there's guys here. We're trying now you do it again. I just don't think it's coincidence to me.
Matt Abeticola
Did you see who else was voted down along with Belichick and Kraft?
Dan Bernstein
Who?
Matt Abeticola
Eli Manning. Didn't make it on this vote, but probably will.
Dan Bernstein
No, he will. I mean, a two time super bowl champion.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
But was he ever considered one of the best quarterbacks in football?
Dan Bernstein
No.
Matt Abeticola
That's the argument. Yeah. He's got, he's got two Super Bowls. Was he, was he ever in that first breath, best quarterbacks in football?
Dan Bernstein
No.
Matt Abeticola
Okay, well, that was, I mean, in.
Dan Bernstein
My opinion, if I'm a voter.
Matt Abeticola
No, that's what I'm asking. Yeah, that'd be the counterargument. But I'm sure there's, there's a little bit, bit of distaste for Robert Kraft.
Dan Bernstein
I'm sure there is.
Matt Abeticola
It's hard for me to pretend I care, other than just finding it all funny.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, I don't care. You know, logically, it's just like, the guy should be in, he should be in. Belichick should be in. But my concern for it, and I don't even have concern, it ends right there. I think the whole thing is funny.
Matt Abeticola
And if you're putting owners in, it's really hard. Once we go down the slippery slope of what constitutes awfulness among owners, there's a. I mean, most. Most billionaires are awful. Some are not. A lot are. Actually, no one who's not. But a lot are just inherently awful. And if you really started picking through a lot of, well, this person donated to this person, and this person was connected to this person and this effort and that effort, you'd have a hard time feeling happy about honoring any one of these people.
Dan Bernstein
See, that's why I don't like the whole process and how the whole process can draw out and particularly in baseball, but I don't want to get into that. That aspect of it. Either a guy's in or a guy's not, you know, and when he's eligible, either he's in or he's not in. It's really that simple. And that way, you avoid all this. All this.
Matt Abeticola
Again, making Patriots fans unhappy. Fine.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, it's. Again, yeah, I don't care. It's just like a reasonable, logical standpoint. The guy should be in without having to wait. He's eligible. He should be in. Robert Krabs eligible.
Matt Abeticola
He should.
Dan Bernstein
He should be in.
Matt Abeticola
What is he, 84?
Dan Bernstein
I don't. I don't know what he is. I think so. 84.
Matt Abeticola
83. I think he's 84. Okay, so, you know, with the. With the guys starting to get up there and you're thinking about, will he.
Dan Bernstein
Are they. Are they waiting for him to. To go before they give him the honor?
Matt Abeticola
I don't know.
Dan Bernstein
Let him celebrate that way.
Matt Abeticola
I don't know.
Dan Bernstein
He doesn't know. We'll head down to the cemetery, let him know.
Matt Abeticola
I can't answer.
Dan Bernstein
Bob, you got in.
Matt Abeticola
I can't answer for all those.
Dan Bernstein
Hello there.
Matt Abeticola
Hello there. Bob. Not that. Bob and Niles in.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, in.
Matt Abeticola
And I'll look, I'll introduce. I'll introduce him for his speech. Whatever happened on Juan Pizarro.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, wow. I didn't. I just got an idea.
Matt Abeticola
What you did. The score hall of Fame, remember? Or the Borz and Bernstein hall of Fame. Wasn't that your bit?
Dan Bernstein
Yes.
Matt Abeticola
What we enshrined. What? Bacon.
Dan Bernstein
I got the notes at home. I got to bring those notes in and go through. We need to go through our tournament of bad can. Read off who the entries were.
Matt Abeticola
I remember a lot of them. A lot of them were pretty. I think before it was even cool, we were making fun of anti vaxxers.
Dan Bernstein
Yes.
Matt Abeticola
I think they won one year, didn't they?
Dan Bernstein
Might have. I had a look. I got this stuff at home.
Matt Abeticola
I think so. And now they're in charge and they make everybody sick.
Dan Bernstein
Hooray. Yeah. So maybe. Maybe they're waiting for. Maybe they're waiting for Bob. I don't know. I just. Again, to me, it's. It's. It's not a coincidence.
Roger Goodell
It's. Okay.
Dan Bernstein
That's deliberate and that's. I'm fine with it. I'm not mad about it at all.
Matt Abeticola
I don't know enough about it to accuse anybody. Watch that. I'll show you. Robert Kraft, you're not getting into the.
Dan Bernstein
Because, like, that. Isn't that quite the honor?
Matt Abeticola
Like, first ballot.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, that's. That's the thing, man. Like, you have to wait. You're still alive. That's. That's a really good way to enjoy it while you're still alive.
Matt Abeticola
Makes it better that way. Yeah, that's what they say. Being alive makes your food taste better.
Dan Bernstein
I think. I think guys that are alive, when they're. When they get in the hall of fame, they enjoy the benefits. More of it.
Matt Abeticola
You can't prove that.
Dan Bernstein
I can't, but I need to see.
Matt Abeticola
Your work on that one.
Dan Bernstein
I mean, I want to see how many signatures the dead guys sign. You know, how much, how many.
Matt Abeticola
That's a real cynical way of looking at it.
Dan Bernstein
Like, how many. Like, how many card shows do dead guys get invited to?
Matt Abeticola
I do love the fact that according to reports that Bill Belichick's girlfriend, Jordan Hudson had a huge party planned for Enshrinement Day.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, really?
Matt Abeticola
Like, already had bought the tents and the. Whatever they're having the pig roast or whatever they're doing. There was a lot of sunk cost in the big old celebration day that now they've got to unwind.
Dan Bernstein
You think she invited Billy to it?
Matt Abeticola
I don't know. Maybe she, like, takes him out of a closet and dusts him off.
Dan Bernstein
She unlocks the bedroom door and lets.
Matt Abeticola
Him out, waves him around and then shoves him back in here. You go back in here, Eat your porridge. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
She's like, I have a party plan for you Saturday night for your enshrinement. And I'll be home afterwards, so just wait for me. Oh, I'm not going. No, no, you're not going.
Matt Abeticola
You don't need to be there. You don't even need to be enshrined. We're just having a party.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, boy.
Matt Abeticola
Yep. Just a report I was reading that that was. That she had done that. And that was a big part of their plans to celebrate his insurance.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I just. I think it was deliberate. And then the fact that the. The voters could hide behind the whole idea of guys have been waiting and you want to get them in. Well, then if they're. They're worthy, they should be in, then. I mean, keep waiting. It's just. It's stupid. I hate the whole process. Anyway, if Bill gets in, when he gets in, we'll kick him out the next day. That's what we'll do.
Matt Abeticola
Done.
Dan Bernstein
The day that. That Bob and Bill get in, the next day, we'll do a show where we clean out the hall of Fame, and we'll start with those two.
Matt Abeticola
We did that years ago.
Dan Bernstein
I know.
Matt Abeticola
I remember. But there's a lot more people in it now we can clean out. I actually was thinking that when we were doing our top 10 listen last week, and I was going through the. I was thinking, like, what's that? Yeah, that was top of mind for me. Like, really? This guy's a little. Okay. I guess so. That's fine.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, there was a couple of names, like, more modern names. Guys whose careers I've watched that were in. I'm like, really? That guy's in. Had to go back and look at a couple guys. Numbers and stats. One guy that definitely will get in, though, one day. Is your guy the new offensive coordinator of your New York Giants?
Matt Abeticola
He's not a Hall of Famer. Yeah. I saw that news today that we were wondering when John Harbaugh was hired, saying, look, you don't need. This isn't a case where, you know, he's on one side of the ball for sure. He has become more defensive oriented.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. But he's more of a CEO type.
Matt Abeticola
So these higher heads are huge.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. And with his guy Monkin getting a job, you know, we were wondering what was gonna happen.
Matt Abeticola
Wardrobe concerns. People were all over him for what he was wearing with the jeans that didn't fit. And it's like he just threw a blazer over the first shirt he grabbed.
Dan Bernstein
Right. He's like 60, isn't he?
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. Somebody said that it was alcoholic dad at a custody hearing. Yeah, like that. That's like, ooh. That's very specific.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, that's rough.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. And he's just a guy who doesn't care. And I understand that, but that's a day you gotta care.
Dan Bernstein
I would think so.
Matt Abeticola
That's a day. Ask someone to help you. Who was it?
Dan Bernstein
Was it Russ? Russ Grimm showed up in the sweater. In the pudding pop sweater?
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. No, just a black. Oh. I thought it was a. No, it was weird. It was black and it had, like, satin. It wasn't great. And he was just kind of. We always compared him to the guy who showed up for the interview at the radio station in the Jalen Rose jersey.
Dan Bernstein
Yes.
Matt Abeticola
Interesting call for a job interview.
Dan Bernstein
We'll be seeing you again. Thanks for coming by.
Matt Abeticola
Wearing my best Jalen Rose jersey to my job interview.
Dan Bernstein
Well, it's a sports station. I gotta show how sportsy I am, I guess. Very sportsy. So. Yeah. Matt Nagy, the new OC in the Giants. At the Giants. And, you know, I think. I guess that video that Andy Reid put out last week really helped put him over the edge.
Matt Abeticola
Did he also somehow involve him in the coaching of Joe Montana like Mike McCarthy did?
Dan Bernstein
That's still unbelievable.
Matt Abeticola
I mean, Joe Montana, when he was a chief. That was all me.
Dan Bernstein
Yep.
Matt Abeticola
That was all me.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Then the Steelers come out to say that really helped put him over the edge.
Matt Abeticola
I wonder what Negie actually does because, like, the whole Mahomes thing got him in the door with the Bears. That you can't go back and use that again.
Dan Bernstein
Right.
Matt Abeticola
And he's not going to give you Mitch or Nick Foles or Andy Dalton.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. I wonder what he. What he sold John Harbaugh on when it comes to Jackson Dart. Like, what did. What did you say about Jackson Dart?
Matt Abeticola
You saw what I did with Mitch Trubisky. Huh?
Dan Bernstein
Right.
Matt Abeticola
So what I did there.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
Because you can't.
Dan Bernstein
You can't say, look what I did with Pat Mahomes. That guy was nothing till me. I mean, you know, you can't use that again. Right.
Matt Abeticola
Although I guess Mike McCarthy proved you could just make stuff up.
Dan Bernstein
I get.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Maybe Nagy sat down and he was like, you ever hear of Dan Reno? I have. I have heard of him. Matt. Well, he was nothing. So I got a hold of him.
Matt Abeticola
I've heard of him, too. How about that? We see, we've both heard we're on the same page. I think.
Dan Bernstein
I think this is the kind of working relationship we're going to have.
Matt Abeticola
We're speaking the same language.
Dan Bernstein
Yes, we are.
Matt Abeticola
You've heard of Dan Marino. I've heard of Dan Marino. Or ideally, in all seriousness, maybe he said, I made a lot of mistakes with Mitch Trubisky. I learned the wrong lessons from Patrick Mahomes. I applied. Or I learned lessons that I applied improperly. I mean, really, there is a way to do that.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
There is a way for him to say, I've had a lot of time to think about and talk about what went wrong.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. And the best approach, he could have sat down and not even brought up Patrick Mahomes and not even brought up Mitch Trubisky. But here's what I've learned as a coach as I've evolved and grown and.
Matt Abeticola
The game has changed.
Dan Bernstein
And here's what I've seen him at Jackson Dart. Here's where I can help Jackson Dart improve. This is what I see in his game. Maybe that was the approach he took.
Matt Abeticola
Could be. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
And I don't know. And pardon me, still, I mean, part of me hopes he does well. And I don't even know why, because I just, I can't get over that 2018 season.
Matt Abeticola
But I never had a huge problem with it. I mean, he got really snippy and sour late because they were losing and his, his baby, whatever the offense was supposed to be, just didn't work.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, it was.
Matt Abeticola
And it took a while for him to realize it didn't work. And then when it was over, when he gave up play calling duties to Bill Laser. Yeah, that was it.
Dan Bernstein
And even though it was bad football and the Bears got bad, I never, I never had a strong dislike towards Matt Nagy. Like I have other, other guys that shouldn't have been there.
Matt Abeticola
No. And I thought it sucked how his kids were treated. And there was all these stories about people yelling things at them. That's what happens if your dad is the coach of the Bears. It was still. It was bush league, a lot of that stuff.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. I told you this same thing happened to my guy, Luke Getzy.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Same thing happened to his kid at two at school, which is just. It's like, it's insane, man.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, that shouldn't happen.
Dan Bernstein
But Matt Nagy, latest guy to get a job. And then who did I see? A Switzer. A Switzer Got an OC job somewhere.
Matt Abeticola
Is that an actual Switzer?
Dan Bernstein
I thought it was. I don't know. See what it says there.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, it autocorrected to Switzerland. Travis Switzer has been hired by the Cleveland Browns and they're both making the move from Baltimore to Cleveland. Travis Switzer is.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, he was like a run game. A run game guy, I think. Maybe. I can't remember what he was. But it's got to be a. It's got to be a relative, right?
Matt Abeticola
Doesn't say. Travis. American professional football coach. Played college for the Akron Zips. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Roger Goodell
No.
Matt Abeticola
Doesn't say that he's related to Barry Sanders.
Dan Bernstein
No.
Matt Abeticola
No. Oh, so. Well, all right.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. Not. Not related. Not related. Travis.
Matt Abeticola
62302.
Dan Bernstein
Is he running the football?
Matt Abeticola
I think he was blocking for people.
Dan Bernstein
Wait, 62302? Yeah, six two. So my height in 302.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. What are you, 210?
Dan Bernstein
215.
Matt Abeticola
Okay. Pretty good guess, though.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Wow. 302.
Matt Abeticola
That's listed playing weight. Probably bigger than that.
Dan Bernstein
Trying to think about 85 more pounds.
Matt Abeticola
That's.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
If you want.
Dan Bernstein
You.
Matt Abeticola
You could. You'd be a. You'd be a quite the look. Extra put extra 85 on you.
Dan Bernstein
All in my face.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. You get it.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
You think you look like Mike Rabel. You'd look like Mike Vrabel. With. With a face like a frying pan.
Dan Bernstein
So one of the Bear safeties wants to come back.
Matt Abeticola
He does. And I don't know if the Bears are going to want him back at that, but Jason Leisure was hanging out with Kevin Byard and Byard hopes to return. He says that I was one of the only players he actually singled out. It was awesome to see. There's going to be effort on both sides to get something done, but who knows? I had a really good year this year. I know polls and Ben Johnson have a lot of decisions to make and a lot of guys on the team. We'll see who's the top priority. I would hope that I am, but you just never know. He's going to be 33 before next season and he played for 15 million over two, which isn't much. Maybe if I don't know what he's willing to accept. I would go with a one year.
Dan Bernstein
I would like a one year deal. I don't know if he would take a one year deal. I don't know if his agent would negotiate a one year deal. I think he might be looking for two at his age. Wrap up two more years of your career.
Matt Abeticola
I want to go to.
Dan Bernstein
I don't know if I do either. No, I would 100% go one year. 100%.
Matt Abeticola
Yep. I'd give him a little bump and go one year.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I agree with that.
Matt Abeticola
And then they'll make the other judgments on Jaquan Brisker, Nishan Wright, CJ GJ all kinds of possibilities there. My guess is that Nishan Wright is going to be an expensive starter for another team.
Dan Bernstein
I agree with that because I saw what anywhere of like the 13 to 16 million dollars range per. Yeah. And I'm not. I'm not interested in that.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah. The spot rack says three years, 50 million for Nishan Wright.
Dan Bernstein
It's a lot of money.
Matt Abeticola
It's a big, big number.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. I mean, if it can guarantee, you know, six interceptions and nine takeaways, sure, I'll do that.
Matt Abeticola
You know, that's. You know, this is.
Dan Bernstein
You can't guarantee that.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I don't know.
Roger Goodell
Certainly.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, that's the thing.
Matt Abeticola
If that's.
Dan Bernstein
If that's the peak, what are you getting for average?
Matt Abeticola
You don't pay for what you did. You pay for what somebody is going to do.
Dan Bernstein
Right.
Matt Abeticola
And I think whenever. God, baseball's so much better at this. Baseball is so much better at being able to use expected stats and being able to use projections and, And. And give a range of outcomes.
Dan Bernstein
Well, it's an individual sport.
Matt Abeticola
I know. It's just. It's easier in baseball to say, we have a really good idea of what you're going to produce for us statistically.
Dan Bernstein
Right. Well, I mean, which is why a team like the Dodgers can spend, you know, $9 billion in their payroll because you can be really smart with your data and your statistics and your research and your understanding. You can do that kind of stuff.
Matt Abeticola
Yep. And you can say if you reach the 95th percentile of these numbers, you can be paid extra for this, this, and this and this. And have a very good sense of odds are that you're going to be actually paying that. Yes.
Dan Bernstein
So you mentioned Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker right there. I looked at our guy, Matt Miller. He put out his first mock draft.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, that's a. That's a story that's its own holiday.
Dan Bernstein
Right. So I just looked at what he had for the Bears, for our Chicago Bears, and he has the first two rounds completed. The Bears with the 25th and the 57th picks. And here's what he had for the Bears. 25th pick, bottom of the first round, edge rusher from Missouri, Zion Young. Zion Young.
Matt Abeticola
I like him. Do you? I do. He's got a it, actually, for what Dennis Allen likes to do. He's. He's about right with. As far as his body type. I haven't seen a lot of him. But with. He's strong with good bend, good quickness, but he's not just like an outside speed guy, you know, he likes guys who can, you know, win some of the upfront battles. So that's, that's not a bad name down there actually.
Dan Bernstein
So here's what he said about Zion Young. The Bears made a run to their divisional run of the playoffs, won the NFC north, blah blah blah. General manager Ryan Polls has to plug holes continue to develop a defense that needs a pass rushing threat. Opposite montes Sweat, the 6 foot 5 inch 262 pound Young is more of a 3 down edge setter than a sudden pass rusher. But he uses a long arm move to set up tackles and establish the corner in the run game. Young needs to develop a secondary pass rush move with a better plan, but the traits are there for him to be a solid starter in a 4, 3 defense.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I don't mind that name and I would also think too if there's a tackle there at 25, if there's a tackle you like better, just take the tackle. I don't want to reach for a position when I think that the line itself could just use bolstering and if you get a kick ass tackle that it could make life easier for whoever your edge happens to be on this line right now. Just get the better player on the defensive line if you're committed to that at that pick. I wouldn't necessarily say it's got to be an edge or it's got to.
Dan Bernstein
Be attacked hole and then at 57 so the bear second round pick he has AJ Hawley, safety out of LSU says Holly's eight interceptions over the past two seasons would translate to Chicago's opportunistic defense. He mentions of course the fact that Jaquan Brisker is set to hit free agency. There's room to add a safety.
Matt Abeticola
I don't like using a safety with that valuable a pick. You're grabbing a safety. I it's safety can be addressed reasonably in free agency and relatively inexpensively. No, no. To me that's a, that is a position where you can, you can find a pro to come in there and just be a pro.
Dan Bernstein
I'm interested too because his his first two picks obviously here are defense and we talked about it at the end of the season what's going to happen with left tackle with Ozzy Chapillo? He will not be ready for the start of the season.
Matt Abeticola
No, it may never be the same.
Dan Bernstein
Again and we saw what they thought of Theo Benedict at the end of the year against a significant Pass rush and his ability to protect Caleb Williams.
Matt Abeticola
I've got it as an open item.
Dan Bernstein
It is an open item when Braxton.
Matt Abeticola
Jones is the third rated free agent.
Dan Bernstein
So that's what I was going to ask. Do you think. I mean, because I think Matt, Matt would sniff out an idea if they're looking at o line. Do they. I mean, is Braxton Jones the guy that they look to? I just, you know, I just, I can't see that as being the way they go to fill that need when he wasn't good enough to play this year.
Matt Abeticola
They have to know enough about him to make. Nobody can make a more informed decision about him than they can correct. Period. And I'm going to trust it. Nobody can make a more informed decision. Yay or nay. But I would like for it to improve immediately. They're not going to take. It's not going to be a developmental pick.
Dan Bernstein
No.
Matt Abeticola
And it depends on the depth at that spot or like nobody thought Tropillo eventually was going to be there as a second round pick based on his performance in the battle early on, how bad he was in training camp and how slow his feet were and how lost he looked that he got better over the year. I mean, that's a big loss.
Dan Bernstein
It is a big loss.
Matt Abeticola
It's a huge loss.
Dan Bernstein
And maybe that's something they address in a third round.
Matt Abeticola
We'll see. We'll see.
Dan Bernstein
We got to do with it.
Matt Abeticola
We got plenty of time to talk about that.
Dan Bernstein
All right. One, one other area I want to get to is my guy, Diego Pavia.
Matt Abeticola
It is your guy. You own that, the rights to his NFL future?
Dan Bernstein
I do. You know, here's There was one who. This is Sean Jensen or Chad Jensen. Sorry. From the, from SI about the Senior Bowl. He said to me, Diego Pavia was the best overall quarterback at the Senior bowl this week. Has some serious limitations due to his size, but he can run the offense, find a way to make plays and has a solid arm. He's also got some attitude to him might not make it to the NFL, but he has heart.
Matt Abeticola
Really need his heart.
Dan Bernstein
I'm saying when you watch him out there, you start to wonder are the limitations going to be too much at the next level?
Matt Abeticola
Yes.
Dan Bernstein
I still think a team takes a. Takes a run at him maybe as an undrafted guy. All right. And dan, here's the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 teams, 8 teams I've listed that he could potentially land in camp. Undrafted guy. Are you ready?
Matt Abeticola
Sure.
Dan Bernstein
The Minnesota Vikings, the Las Vegas Raiders.
Matt Abeticola
Great quarterback History. Yes.
Dan Bernstein
The jets, the Browns, the Matt Nagy Giants, the Cardinals, the Steelers, and the Colts. I think one of those teams is going to take a run and get my guy the one snap in an NFL regular season game that I need.
Matt Abeticola
All right. That's all you need, is one snap? All I need is an actual game.
Dan Bernstein
Yes.
Matt Abeticola
I'll count playoffs, too.
Dan Bernstein
I need one. I need a team to take a run. To love his attitude, to love his ability to move an offense, to get him as the third quarterback, to have the first two guys go down with broken legs in the first half, and he gets to play the second half.
Matt Abeticola
Wait, what was that one again? I want you to rewind that.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Matt Abeticola
To go down with broken leg now. But wait. Now, where are Rowell and Javier?
Dan Bernstein
In the bleachers.
Matt Abeticola
Okay. Drunk.
Dan Bernstein
Yes. Right? Yes.
Matt Abeticola
100% stupid and crazy.
Dan Bernstein
Well, one's in the. He's below the stadium in whatever makeshift jail they have.
Podcast Advertiser
Yes.
Matt Abeticola
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
And the other.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, you don't get Diego without Roel and Javier.
Dan Bernstein
The other's in the suite sleeping.
Matt Abeticola
Perfect.
Dan Bernstein
And they missed the second half where he plays.
Matt Abeticola
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
Then I'm in Minnesota. Vegas, Jets, Browns, Giants, Arizona, Pittsburgh, Colts. Okay.
Dan Bernstein
One of those teams. He will end up at a camp as an undrafted free agent.
Matt Abeticola
He can do all of these things.
Dan Bernstein
Yes.
Matt Abeticola
He's just not going to play it down of NFL football.
Dan Bernstein
He's going to play one down, at least one down of NFL football. You watch now, and I will be vindicated.
Matt Abeticola
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
And then my Diego Pavia card I have in its plastic sleeve on my desk at home.
Matt Abeticola
That was such a nice increase in value. What a sweet gift. Yeah. Very cool that your son would be like, hey, look what. Look what I pulled. Look. Look what I'm going to give to you.
Dan Bernstein
He got home with his box, he did his rip and found Diego Pavi. And he said, you know what? My dad needs this on his desk as inspiration every day.
Matt Abeticola
I remember when I opened a pack of cards, I remember exactly where I was standing in the house. It was right inside the front door, to the left, inside the living room, by the chair that was like, you weren't supposed to sit in. Cause it was a nice chair. And I opened the pack and I was kind of setting the cards on that chair, and I got all excited. Cause I got an Allen Ellis. Oh, Allen Ellis was a Bears cornerback. I think he was coming off one of his better seasons. Like, oh, this is really cool. I got Allen Ellis. And then it was like, flick, flick. Walter Payton, Pro Bowl.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, wow.
Matt Abeticola
And it's also. I shared this memory with Mike Florio at one point. It's the most gorgeous football card.
Dan Bernstein
Okay. You still have it?
Matt Abeticola
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Dan Bernstein
Is it protected?
Matt Abeticola
Probably not, because, you know how I treated my cards. But everything about it was just like. And I remember, like, my feeling like my heart stopped because I was already excited. And then I froze, and I ran, and I didn't know where I was running. I was, like, doing just laps around the house like a dog.
Dan Bernstein
Like a dog doing zoomies with zoomies. Yeah. I love it.
Matt Abeticola
And I ran, and I kicked the doorway into the family room. And we thought my toe was broken. Like, it swelled up and everything, and I was limping around. But I remember the. I didn't know what the term fit of peak meant.
Dan Bernstein
Okay.
Matt Abeticola
And we went to my doctor in Highland Park. Dr. Eugene Isaacs, the best. And Dr. Isaacs looked at my friend. He said, oh, you. What happened? And I said, I kicked a doorway. And he said, did you kick it in a fit of peak? I looked at my mom. I'm like, what the. Does that mean?
Dan Bernstein
Like, no, I had a shoe on, right?
Matt Abeticola
Like, what is a.
Dan Bernstein
Wasn't wearing a peak.
Matt Abeticola
It means, like, were you. Were you angry? Did you kick it out of anger? And then. And then, of course, we went home and said, we're looking. Let's look up that word. It's P, I, Q, U, E. This is the idiom. This is what it. So of course I'm here. I'm like, you know, my foot hurts, and I have to get the. The. The English lesson. Yeah, but. And I explained to him. I said, no, I got a. I got a Walter Payton.
Dan Bernstein
You should find it. See what kind of condition it's in. Still.
Matt Abeticola
It's. It's some. With I.
Dan Bernstein
So Hank. Hank. Hank ripped one last week, and he got a Saquon Barkley card. And it's this downtown series or. I don't know what it is. And so the box was, like, 60 or 80 bucks, and he ended up. What?
Matt Abeticola
Wait, that's a set?
Dan Bernstein
No, not like a full set. That's like, maybe eight. Eight packs of maybe 24 cards.
Matt Abeticola
Okay?
Dan Bernstein
So he pulls this one, and he shows me the Saquon Barkley, and he's like, this is a really, really good car. And he. You know, he puts it in plastic, and. And then like a week later, he's like, hey, dad, you remember that. That Barkley card I showed you? I said, yep, because I sold it. I go, for how much? He goes, $480. I'm like, you've. Emily, you're kidding me.
Matt Abeticola
Did he sell it? Could it have been a lot more? Did he get.
Dan Bernstein
No, that was. No, he got a. No, he got a good value for it. Okay, so 480 bucks. So we went to. Went to a card shop in Gray's Lake State Line. And so we're there. There was a box, and it had. It was some big box. It was like, 80 bucks. And it had. It had 12 packs in it. So like, six or eight cards in each pack. 12 packs. And I'm like, all right, I'll get you guys one. And we split it. And so I gave them five each, and then I, I kept two. And they're like, oh, you're gonna pull your own? I go, yeah, I wanna. I wanna pull a card. So. So I pulled one out, and it's not like a regular card, but it's a Luther Burden card. Yeah. And it's in the 87 jersey.
Matt Abeticola
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
And they told me it's a really good one. And so we got home, and they immediately put in plastic for me. And they're like, don't do anything.
Matt Abeticola
They took it out of circulation. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
They're like, don't. Don't do anything with this card. Don't bend it. Don't do anything.
Matt Abeticola
What makes it. Is it because he's wearing the 87? That was the preseason number.
Dan Bernstein
Well, it was a different. It's not like the regular card, like, in the, in the card set. You know, like, these. All the, like, the cards that. They're special have different graphics to them.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, I know. I understand.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
Or like a piece of DNA or fabric Breaker in the air.
Dan Bernstein
So this one had a different appearance to it, and it was also in the 87 jersey.
Matt Abeticola
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
So they were like, well, that was a great pull, dad. I'm like, well, yeah, because I, I, I pick. You're good at by. Yeah. Luck, so.
Matt Abeticola
And anything that helps you even look remotely cool to them.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
Savor it.
Dan Bernstein
So now I have a. I have a stack on my, My desk. Yeah. So the Diego Pavia is right there with it. I took him to a card show. Have you ever been to a card show? No, I took the kids. You ever been to a card show?
Matt Abeticola
I worked at one back in the day. That's where I sat with Pete Rose and did, like, this big interview thing with Pete Rose there.
Dan Bernstein
This wasn't like a celebrity type thing. This is like, we're like card owners, like shop owners. And then, like, people get to. They Come together.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, like a swap meet?
Dan Bernstein
Kind of like, but a little more organized than that.
Matt Abeticola
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
And so I took them actually saw Perukh there.
Matt Abeticola
Brian Farouk was there with his kid at this station. They don't even know his name is Brian.
Dan Bernstein
Oh, they don't? What do they know him as? Whip. Oh, that's all, that's all he is. He's Whip in the morning. He's Whip on the morning show on the mix.
Matt Abeticola
I swear to God, I said, where's Brian? Like, who's that?
Dan Bernstein
Oh God, that's funny.
Matt Abeticola
They, they don't know. We only know him as Brian. I call him Brian.
Dan Bernstein
So I was, yeah, I was sitting there away from all the, the activity. And yeah, Brian came walking over and his kid was there. So I hooked up his kid and my kid. They exchanged usernames on some card app that they buy and sell and swap. And so. But the card thing. So let's go find that Walter Payton card.
Matt Abeticola
Well, I mean, you can look it up. It's just such a great looking card. I want to say it's 78.
Dan Bernstein
You got to find that man. That could be worth something if it's. Oh, it is terrible condition.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, no, no, no, it's.
Dan Bernstein
It is bent in half or anything.
Matt Abeticola
It is. It's the 70 covered in like barbecue sauce. That's 78. 77. Trying to remember because I, I think I posted something before. Yeah, it's the 77 card.
Dan Bernstein
Okay, what's it worth?
Matt Abeticola
Graded? Oh, wait, what is this? $44,000. Get out of here.
Dan Bernstein
It's got to be in mint condition though.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, that's all pro gem mint. No, mine is going to be nowhere near that condition. But I definitely do have. This says 5000. This says 1800. But that's mint graded. Oh, here, this one says it's pre owned worth a dollar 29.95. Yeah, I'm sure mine is not worth anything.
Dan Bernstein
What if your card was worth $44,000? You've just been sitting on it the whole time. It's in a shoebox and it's all bent in half.
Matt Abeticola
It happens.
Dan Bernstein
You wouldn't be disappointed in yourself.
Matt Abeticola
No.
Dan Bernstein
That you broke your foot over it and then years later you just let it rot? No, disintegrate to hell.
Matt Abeticola
If it gave me that much joy that I almost took my foot off. I don't know. No, you can't go back and think about things like this.
Dan Bernstein
Well, look at you being mature.
Matt Abeticola
What else am I going to do? Am I going to waste time worrying about that I waste time worrying about other things.
Dan Bernstein
Remember that one time you emailed me? It was years ago. You emailed me, and the email just said, start worrying. And I responded back. I go, so what? And you're like, we don't know yet. I'm like, oh, okay.
Matt Abeticola
Yeah, I do a lot of work on that. Believe me, I do a lot of work on that email from Dan.
Dan Bernstein
Start worrying.
Matt Abeticola
But what a gorgeous football card. Like, really, just as far as the cost, the thousand yarder football that's on there, it's a young, handsome Walter Payton. I mean, everything about it is just. I think that's my favorite sports card ever. It's my absolute single favorite sports card.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah. So this is the thing that Hank pulled. That's the Saquon Barkley Don Russ downtown card.
Matt Abeticola
Wow.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
So there's a lot going on in that.
Dan Bernstein
Sold it for.
Matt Abeticola
There's a huge eagle over him.
Dan Bernstein
480 bucks, man. Man.
Matt Abeticola
Nice. That's. That's good.
Dan Bernstein
So then we made a deal.
Matt Abeticola
Probably trading crypto, too.
Dan Bernstein
I made a deal with both of them. I was like, if I buy any more boxes in the future and you pull something like that, I get my money back. I get the cost of the box back. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I don't want a share of it. That's fine.
Matt Abeticola
Okay.
Dan Bernstein
I just want my. I want my money back. So we made that agreement. Both boys, now they got. They got wads of cash. They got briefcases. It's really bizarre, man. They got these. Brian. These giant briefcases.
Matt Abeticola
I should have made a deal like that when we got Jason that we got him Apple stock and we got him Berkshire Hathaway. Oh, I should have made a deal. I didn't really think about that. It was a bar mitzvah present. Yeah.
Dan Bernstein
I had, like a thousand shares of Apple back in, like, 82, 83.
Matt Abeticola
They got me some fruit company. They invested in some. He got magic legs and invested in some kind of fruit company.
Dan Bernstein
That's what I thought it was. I was like, fruit's not going to last.
Matt Abeticola
I got rid of that right away. There's no multicolored apple. This apple's got a bite out of it. Nobody's gonna buy this.
Dan Bernstein
Got this Apple stock. It's a farmer. Yeah.
Matt Abeticola
I don't like it, but there's no future in farming.
Dan Bernstein
So I sold it all.
Matt Abeticola
Crap, dummy. All right, so that the. So Pavia is good at the Senior bowl. And you're excited about Pavia. I, however, am not.
Dan Bernstein
All it takes is one snap and.
Matt Abeticola
You know, you know what else? I am often about quarterbacks.
Dan Bernstein
Wrong.
Podcast Advertiser
Wrong.
Dan Bernstein
I am.
Matt Abeticola
That is, I could be famously, famously wrong about my quarterback projections.
Dan Bernstein
My. What was your worst one? My worst one was Christian Hackenberg. My worst one was Colt McCoy.
Matt Abeticola
Christian Hagar couldn't play dead. And I had, I had people telling me like, you might want to back off this one. You do not like him as much as you like him. Like, he. He doesn't even understand how to hold a football. I was like his helmets on backwards.
Dan Bernstein
I was on remote somewhere at a wingstop, one of the Wingstop locations and I, I was singing the praises of Colt McCoy was go be the next big thing in the NFL. Oh, man. Yeah, that was bad.
Matt Abeticola
Like you say, we remember our misses more than our hits.
Dan Bernstein
But you know, my biggest hit, though, ever was DJ lemayhue.
Matt Abeticola
You know what? He's had a hell of a career.
Dan Bernstein
Yes, he has. Yes, he has.
Matt Abeticola
He on the list of guys who've won a batting title with more than one team.
Dan Bernstein
That's correct.
Matt Abeticola
He's there with like Bill Madlock and.
Dan Bernstein
Luis Arias and yeah, that was my year with Quaddy. And I was like, the best infielder on this in his organization is DJ LeMay Mayhew. So at my best of my worst. But yeah, not as bad as you with the quarterbacks.
Matt Abeticola
No, no, I've had some. I've had bad sports thoughts around quarterbacks before. Every once in a while I'm. I get a good feeling about one, but I'll. I'll ride with, with my, my pavia thoughts on that.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, I think we're going to do. We have a new segment coming up maybe on the show where we do bad sports thoughts instead of hot takes.
Matt Abeticola
Oh, I got a. I got a whole. I got a humdinger of a bad sports lot there just waiting to come out. Don't you work?
Dan Bernstein
All right, that'll do it for forward progress today. You know, we do have forward progress every day for you, though.
Matt Abeticola
And you know what else we have? This is really important because if you, if you ever say, well, how do I. How do I find these shows? Or how do I go back? I remember something Bernstein said, and I'm gonna clown him because I'm gonna play the stupid thing that he said.
Dan Bernstein
Yeah, Bernstein, go get a colonoscopy.
Matt Abeticola

Hosts: Dan Bernstein & Matt Abbatacola
Date: February 3, 2026
In this episode, Dan Bernstein and Matt Abbatacola dig into a packed week of NFL offseason storylines with a Chicago Bears twist. As Super Bowl week heats up, the hosts react to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s annual "State of the League" press conference, dissect the latest on Hall of Fame voting (with the Patriots dynasty figures notably snubbed), and examine the Bears' own offseason—focusing on potential roster moves like the fate of safety Kevin Byard. The episode is a blend of sharp, informed analysis with approachable, fan-oriented language. The hosts don’t shy away from sarcasm or self-deprecation, keeping the conversation lively (“you'd look like Mike Vrabel with a face like a frying pan" [32:05]), but consistently center hard-hitting football insight and authentic Bears passion.
This episode of Forward Progress spotlights the intersection of league-wide controversies and Bears-specific concerns. Dan and Matt provide both immediate reactions to major NFL news (Goodell’s presser, Hall of Fame decisions) and granular analysis of Chicago’s evolving offseason priorities—from Kevin Byard’s contract to draft and coaching outlooks. For Bears fans seeking a mix of humor, nostalgia, and no-nonsense football talk, this episode delivers.
