Thousands of workers for the Long Island Railroad walked off the job around 12:01 this morning, bringing the nation's busiest passenger railway to a grinding halt. And of course, commuters racing for the worse this all comes as the labor unions failed to reach a new contract deal with the MTA on pay increases, and details on exactly where each side stood late last night is unclear, but the VP of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen says that no new negotiations have been scheduled. And meantime, the chairman for the MTA says the agency, quote, gave the union everything they said they wanted in terms of pay, but reportedly the unions wouldn't agree to higher health care premiums.
