Wisconsin Supreme Court rules 176 year old state abortion ban is not valid, leaving in place a 2015 law allowing abortions up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. Today's ruling upholds a lower court ruling that the 1849 law refers not to the killing of a fetus, refers just to the killing of a fetus without the mother's consent, not voluntary abortions. A federal judge blocked the Trump administration's attempt to end immigration protections for Haitian migrants.

The ruling by Judge Brian Cogan of the Eastern District of New York prevents the removal of hundreds of thousands of Haitians who are currently in the US Writing that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem does not have the authority to end their temporary protected status. The protections were first granted in 2010 after Haiti's catastrophic earthquake and the Biden administration had extended them through February of next year. Judge Kogan wrote that Noem will have to wait until then to make a decision about the renewal according to procedures put in place by Congress.

Wall street this morning, the Dow is down 89, the S&P pretty much flat. The NASDAQ's up 57 points. Tesla reports a 13% drop in its electric car sales over the last three months. Some potential buyers are turned off by CEO Elon Musk's political involvement. There's also more competition. There's a report that hiring was down last month.

Payroll processing company ADP says there were 33,000 fewer private sector jobs in June. And ADP bases its report on data involving more than 25 million U.S. employees. ADP's chief economist Neela Richardson says layoffs continue to be rare. But a hesitancy to hire and a reluctance to replace departing workers led to job losses, she says. Still, the slowdown in hiring has yet to disrupt pay growth. Annual pay in June was up 4.4% from a year ago.
