The president also praised FBI Director Kash Patel for the investigation that led to an arrest in the Charlie Kirk assassination. Patel just told a Senate hearing in this case, we cannot do our job without the American public and credible reporting in the media. And that's why Tyler Robinson is in custody today. Now, Robinson is due in court this afternoon to face murder and other charges in Charlie Kirk's assassination. The Washington Post reports he confessed to the killing in an online chat group. Now the president is still trying to fire a Federal Reserve governor who remains on the job after courts sided with Lisa Cook.

The Trump administration is appealing to the Supreme Court. A ruling from the U.S. district Court of Appeals in D.C. that blocks the president from immediately firing Lisa Cook from the Fed's board of governors. He announced last month he was firing Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud that she denies.

On Wall street, stocks are down this morning. The dow is falling 180 points. The Nasdaq is dropping 19 from yesterday's record high close. The S&P 500, which also hit a record high yesterday, is down 9 points this morning. Now, we mentioned the Federal Reserve meeting going on to assess the economy that is expected to lead to an interest rate cut tomorrow. Well, here's something else for the Fed to look at as they consider that cut.

Retail sales rose 610/10 of a percent in August, more than expected. And excluding autos, sales jumped 7/10 of a percent. Non store retailers online shopping increased more than 10%. Spending was up 6.5% at food and drinking places. Also, July's increase was revised higher to up 0.6%, helped by Amazon's Prime Day sale and competing discounts from Walmart and others. Oil is on the rise this morning. It's up almost a dollar. It's back over 64 bucks a barrel now. As for gas, it is up a penny. AAA's national average for regular is at $3.18 a gallon. That is a penny less than a week ago, but $0.04 higher than a month ago. Almost the same price we were paying on this day.
