The fire was sparked on Friday at the Viva Dominicas Beach Wyndham resort in the popular tourist town of Bay Bay. Thick black smoke blanket as flames soared just feet away from the crystal clear waters along the Caribbean coast. Crews even using drones equipped with water hoses to try to put out the massive fire. While the exact cause of the fire is under investigation, emergency operations officials in the Dominican Republic say the fire spread rapidly in part due to strong winds. They also say the fire moved so quickly because many of the roofs at that resort were made with a dry palm leaf material called kanna. Many of the guests who were evacuated have been placed in other nearby hotels or housing facilities.
