District Court Judge Susan Ilston is granting a temporary restraining order putting on hold for now layoff notices to thousands of federal workers. At a hearing in San Francisco, the judge said evidence suggests the Trump administration is taking advantage of the lapse in government spending to a assume all bets are off and that laws don't apply to them, calling the actions arbitrary and capricious. More than 4,000 government workers have already received reduction in force notices. The White House budget director says as many as 10,000 could be laid off and entire agencies closed.

One of the most significant airlifts in Alaska history is underway to evacuate hundreds from storm and devastated coastal towns. The threats sent Tuesday night to school superintendents alleged there were bombs in schools and demanded payment in Bitcoin. Officials in Brevard county, among the targeted counties, saying these threats are not considered credible and appear to be part of a hoax intended to solicit money. They made no changes to the school day and said there was no indication of danger to their students or campuses.
