Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who said if there is no real reform, Democrats will not back a longer term bill. There will be a limited shutdown starting in about an hour because the House still needs to vote on these bills and they're not in session until Monday. The Justice Department has released more records from its investigation into Jeffrey Epstein six weeks after a deadline mandated by Congress.

Congress and the states have power to set rules for federal elections, not the president. A federal judge ruled, striking down parts of an executive order tightening citizenship verification for voter registration and absentee ballot applications. District Court Judge Colleen Kolar Kutelli block provisions of the order writing the Constitution does not allow the president to impose unilateral changes to federal election procedures. Since President Trump signed the order in March, several other federal judges have ruled against the administration, triggering appeals that ultimately could reach the Supreme Court.

A federal judge has barred prosecutors from seeking the death penalty in the case against Luigi Mangione, the man accused in the 2024 killing of United Health Care CEO Brian Thompson after a judge dismissed a murder charge, finding it technically flawed.

His attorney, Karen Agnifolo, says Mangione and his defense team were relieved by the judge's decision. You know, double jeopardy is a big thing here, right? Mr. Mangione is being charged in three different cases for one incident. So we're going to continue to fight for that as well. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to federal and New York state charges. Jury selection in the federal case is set for September 8, with opening statements and testimony expected on October 13. A date for the state trial has not yet been set in New York City. Tanya J. Actress Catherine o' Hara has died.
B
We don't know much about her death except her representatives are saying it was after a short illness. She was, of course, a legend in the truest sense of the word, a star on our screens big and small for decades in roles that endeared her to generations. Catherine O' Hara learned her comedy craft in the 70s at Toronto's second City Theater Comedy Club, honed those same skills with the sketch comedy TV show SCTV before making the move to movies and getting her first big role in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice in 1988. And two years later, she got what became one of the defining roles of her career, which as Kevin's mom in Home Alone, a role she also played in the sequel. Both movies becoming, of course, instant classics, watched in millions of homes worldwide every Christmas.
