One interesting twist in all of this is that after weeks of delaying the inevitable passage of this bill, Democrats say it is now in their best interest strategically for it to become law as quickly as possible so that they can then challenge it in court, arguing that the map violates the Voting Rights Act.

Time is of the essence here because the filing deadlines for next year's midterms are just a few months away in early December. And if these legal challenges drag on too much past then it will become increasingly less likely that the courts would throw out the maps before the election.

Republicans are already suing in California over the governor's plan there to help Democratic candidates with new maps that challenge, arguing the proposal advanced without a required 30 day review. North Carolina's governor warning coastal residents to prepare for some impacts from Hurricane Aaron and especially those under evacuation orders.

Hurricane Erin will not make landfall, but its offshore path is still close to North Carolina's Outer Banks. Governor Josh Stein says impacts will be felt over the next day or so. We are anticipating coastal flooding from massive waves, tropical storm force winds and tidal and storm surge for much of the state. Shoreline evacuations are already called for some of those areas, especially Dare County, North Carolina. Emergency response teams are being staged, including swift water, water rescue and helicopters to transport food and water to damage zones, though people are encouraged to gather water, food, medicine and important documents for their families.
