A European decision to begin reimposing nuclear sanctions.

France, Germany and the United Kingdom announced in a letter to UN Security Council members that they are triggering the so called snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions on Iran. These sanctions had been suspended under the 2015 nuclear deal and would again freeze Iranian assets abroad, stop arms deals with Tehran and impose penalties on any development of Iran's ballistic missile program. The move by the European Nation starts a 30 day clock for the sanctions to return. Iran's foreign minister called the action unjustified and illegal in a call with his European counterparts. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the US Welcomes the snapback but remains available for diplomatic engagement with Iran. Tanya J. Powers, Fox News.

Second quarter economic growth has been revised higher. The gross domestic product for the spring quarter rose 3.3%. Corporate profits and consumer spending both rose in the period. The GDP contracted in the first quarter, though that decline is attributed to a surge in imports, which skewed the reading. Also, there's another sign. Layoffs are subdued. New claims for unemployment Benefits declined by 5,000 last week to 229,000. Continuing claims, those remaining on benefits declined to 1.95 million in the week ending August 16th.
